ello lovely readers and welcome back to another issue of Your Hampshire and Dorset Wedding. I can’t believe we’re already more than halfway through the year; where has the time gone? Summer weddings are always stunning and allow couples to get creative to bring the outdoor areas to life with beautiful ceremony and reception spaces, snug areas, garden games and al fresco dining options. We all know how unpredictable the weather can be in the UK. So if you’re opting for an al fresco event, make sure you have a wet-weather backup option such as a tipi, marquee or an indoor space available – you can never be too prepared! We’re expecting to see many Bridgerton-inspired weddings this summer after the popular show released season two and the nation fell in love with Kate and Anthony. Expect to see plenty of lace, ruffles, gloves, capes and delicate blues – it’s going to be oh-so glamorous. Neutrals and earthy tones are also trending at the moment, with the main focus on nature with foliage, driftwood and different textures being used. This year, couples are focusing on sustainable weddings and are thinking outside of the box to reduce their impact on the environment, which can be done in multiple ways. Why not opt for repurposed jewellery or conflict-free pieces with sustainable diamonds, use seed paper or recycled paper for stationery, reuse floral arrangements from the ceremony throughout the day and pick seasonal blooms if possible?

Rownhams House was built by Sir Isaac Newton’s nephew in 1762 for his new and beautiful bride Catherine Barton, a lady of some fame and fortune. The Georgian house and the Medieval Coach House are situated in 12 acres, home to manicured lawns, woodland areas, a picturesque lake and an ice house. bbie and George first met online before going on a date in London, where they got to know each other better. There was a spark straight away and the pair headed for a romantic walk around Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Abbie loved how kind and friendly George was; he always managed to make her laugh. He says, “I first saw Abbie reading a book while she waited for me at the station as I was running late. It made me chuckle to see her innocently stood there reading amongst the chaos.” He adds, “Once we got chatting, I knew she was someone that was going to be in my life forever.” George proposed on March 23rd 2019 at Swanage Beach, a very special location for Abbie, who would visit the beach with her grandparents and dad. She says, “It was just the two of us and I was paddling in the sea when I turned around and saw George on one knee – it was a beautiful moment.”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple set the date for March 19th 2022, and created a wedding that represented them both. Abbie says, “We had to delay our wedding three times because of Covid-19, and in that time we changed our venue after realising it didn’t fit our vision. We decided to stop worrying about what everybody else would think and go for everything we wanted for our day.” Swanage Town Hall was the perfect location for the pair’s ceremony; the building is beautiful and created the perfect backdrop to photographs. The pair used faux flowers for the buttonholes and bouquets with pink, lilac and burgundy shades. A neon sign saying ‘The Gormans’ became the reception’s centrepiece and was made from wine corks. Dorset Pedaling Pizza Co was in charge of catering and created woodfired pizzas that everyone loved! Abbie says, “It was the best pizza we’ve ever tasted, even for George who’s a fussy eater!” After the pizzas, guests could tuck into the cake, which was surrounded by cookies and cake bites.

LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding her dream gown, Abbie fell in love with the fourth dress she tried by Phoenix Gowns. She comments, “I was surprised I liked the dusky peach colour instead of the traditional white and I felt really comfortable – it was still dreamy without being too much.” To finish off the look, the bride wore her nan’s pearl necklace, a pair of earrings from George and her mum’s bracelet to match the beading on the dress. Abbie’s shoes were hand-painted converse with lots of the couple’s favourite things, including buildings made from bike wheels, pizzas and books. She says, “I was a bit surprised when I saw myself properly on the day as I’m not the most confident person, but Bex Elizabeth had done an amazing job with my hair and make-up – I was so happy with how I looked.” The groom wore a three-piece suit from Hawes & Curtis and looked dashing. Abbie comments, “He worried me before the day after telling me the suit was baggy, so I pictured a dodgy ‘80s get up, but he looked amazing and the only man there in charcoal.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The couple both felt very relaxed in the morning. Abbie took some time alone to have a bath and then relaxed for 30 minutes away from the buzz of everyone else getting ready to try and stay as calm as possible. She says, “I started feeling nervous once I had my dress on and again when we drove to the town hall, but I completely calmed down as soon as I saw George.” The groom spent the morning with his best man in a cottage before

heading to a local pub for a good luck whiskey, where he was congratulated and warned ‘it’s not too late’, which didn’t help with the nerves! He says, “I was amazed when I saw Abbie walk up the aisle, all my worries about speaking in front of everyone disappeared.” The ceremony was beautiful and very personal. Abbie says, “It really felt like it was just me, George and the registrar. After the vows, we all stood on the steps outside the hall for a photo and cars were honking their horns – it was amazing.” She adds, “We went with our photographer to get photos by the sea, and we were congratulated and kissed by so many people walking past; it felt very special that they were happy we’d got married in their town.”

NEAREST AND DEAREST A funny moment from the day was when the pair’s dog Jeff, who was there during the ceremony, saw the bride and wanted to get to her – he was whimpering at the back of the ceremony. Once the pair walked out of the room, they were taken into a side room dead opposite him, and the couple’s friend had no choice but to loosen the lead. Jeff came bounding over, wrapping Abbie up with the lead – everyone found it hilarious and very typical Jeff! The best man, Onur, got very drunk and was so funny. Abbie says, “He went from shy and quiet to Greek dancing in the middle of everyone dancing! He also turned our first dance off as he was playing the song on his phone and wanted to film us dancing, silly fool! Luckily we love him and found it all hilarious – he really added an element to our day. “Our best friends (husband and wife) Andy and Sarah were also amazing on the day. They had everything organised with the extra food and drinks we had prepared, making sure everything was going to plan and ensuring we were all having a good time – they’re our best friends for a reason!” The couple’s photographer, Holly Stead, went above and beyond on the day to make the pair feel at ease. The bride says, “We’ve never been around a photographer who was so bubbly and excited about their job. Some guests assumed she was a family friend because of how warm she was with us, which shows she did an amazing job.”

HONEYMOON After the big day, the pair stayed in Swanage for a week with Jeff and spent time relaxing and going for walks on the beach. Abbie says, “We stayed in a lovely little cottage in the town called The Nook with a log burner and low ceilings. We went our favourite spots and stopped at The Greyhound Pub for lunch, which had amazing views of Corfe Castle. The highlight was being on Shell Bay paddling in the sea and watching our dog running around – he’s a rescue and it’s always a joy to see him happy. We then had a week at home doing some DIY and relaxing.” The couple has a trip to New York booked for next year, where they’ll have their main honeymoon.

mma and Lewis first crossed paths during a night out in Bournemouth and really hit it off. When Emma started working with the Royal Caribbean International again two weeks later, the pair stayed in contact every day until they were reunited again at the airport seven months later – they have been together ever since. Lewis proposed during a camping trip, and it was a moment Emma will never forget. She says, “He popped the questions on a walk with our beloved dog Bryan on the clifftop above the beach – it was a complete surprise. Lewis asked my mum and dad for permission a couple of weeks prior and they didn’t let on at all.” The couple set their wedding date for April 16th 2022, and their number one aim was to include their sausage dog as part of the celebrations. Here Emma shares details about their special day... 35

We loved Balmer Lawn Hotel, which had a relaxing atmosphere. Bryan was allowed everywhere and the whole event was at the same property, so no need to travel. Our big day was over the Easter weekend, so we had Lindt chocolate bunnies and little pots of mints with both our names and the wedding date on for favours.

Our venue stylist did an amazing job at decorating the ceremony area and pavilion.

Linen & Lace Events created our table plan, which featured a gold hoop with flowers and table names – it looked fantastic! 36

We kept the centerpieces very relaxed with lanterns and some flowers to create a rustic feel.

Our saxophonist Claire played throughout the ceremony and during the drinks reception – she was brilliant!

Our photographer Kim berley was amazing, she captured all the different shots we wa nted – everyone felt so at ease with her.

We had canapés after the ceremony followed by diff erent meats, cheeses and vegetables, a buffet barbecue and a sele ction of desserts, which was all del icious. In the evening, we had a big buffet and served the cak e.

All the staff at the hotel made sure our day ran smoothly, especially Ruth who was lovely and made us both feel calm.

If you’ve chosen a September wedding, you might be wondering what the weather will be like – a question we often get asked at dress fittings. A Mikado satin gown with sleeves is a wonderful choice that’s classic and elegant. The fabric has a thicker appearance than soft satins, which would give the gown a more tailored look. There are many wraps available, from the classic fur to a more subtle tulle that can have some sparkle added. We’re planning an outdoor wedding in August, what advice can you share to help with the process? Always prepare for all eventualities when it comes to the weather. Make sure you have a wet-weather plan as well as a hot one in place. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, what’s the plan if it rains? Do you have a big enough marquee or tipi for everyone to gather under if the heavens open? For scorching weather, consider increasing your supply of drinking water for your guests and shaded areas where possible. I was running a wedding in a tipi a few years ago on the hottest day of the year, and there was very little shade. My saving grace was the refrigerated van, and I’m not embarrassed to say I did pop in to cool down regularly.

Remember, umbrellas can be used as sun shades and not just for the rain. Consider supplying or advising your guests to bring shrugs or something warm to throw on for the evening as it can become relatively cold once the sun sets, especially for your older guests. I always recommend a supply of warm drinks for loved ones who like a cuppa later in the day. In summary, always consider the comfort of your guests attending for the entire day alongside your backup plan depending on the unpredictable British weather. We’d love to have a luxurious cake on our big day, but we’re worried about the price tag. Do you have any ideas for keeping the price down? Share your budget with your cake designer and talk through the theme of your wedding; they can then draw a design from the information provided. Every cake designer is different; what one finds easy and quick, another may find complicated and lengthy – it’s always best to have a chat first about your ideas. For those looking for a rustic style, a naked or semi-naked cake would be perfect. If you’re looking for a tall cake, dummy tiers are a great option for extra height and impact. Yes, this won’t cost as much as an actual cake, but the decoration and time involved does still increase the cost – just keep in mind that you might not save as much money as you think with this option. Don’t try to cater to every guest unless the cake is used as a dessert. I always recommend reducing the numbers to minimise wastage, which also helps decrease the cost. I want to look on-trend on my big day. What’s fashionable at the moment, and what designers I should look out for? We were lucky enough to visit both the London and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week this year. After two years of Covid restrictions, we were keen to feel and touch all the dresses and fabrics again. Here we have scouted all the latest fashion trends in the bridal world. There’s a huge trend towards plain and classic styles but with a modern twist. In particular, overskirts are in huge demand as it allows you to have two different looks with a dramatic A-line skirt for the day and a more fitted sleek silhouette for the evening. One designer who does this well is Eva Lendel, a Ukrainian company that has set up a second hub in Poland despite the war to continue to serve all their beautiful clients. Modern brides are pairing their clean gowns with understated pearl details. Cathedral-length veils scattered with tiny pearls teamed with a pearl headband are uber fashionable at the moment. Another trend which graced the runways is frothy blouson sleeves that can be detached for that desired second look. The bridal world is also seeing a move towards a sexier trend with some skirt slits, so brides can show some leg and those all-important shoes. If you don’t want to go full-on femme fatale with a figurehugging silhouette and skirt slit, go for a timeless look with a twist and opt for a formal ball gown with sleeves and an unexpected thigh-high slit. s the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

THE LANDINGS RESORT The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. ACCOMMODATION Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.

THE LANDINGS SPA The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.

ST. LUCIAN CUISINE You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).

EXCURSIONS If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

FIVE STAR LUXURY If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some…

here were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family. While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean 96

along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay. If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury. Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

ART AND CULTURE Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. With little stops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest – and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!
