There’s so much to love about these beautiful counties from the rural countryside, deeply rooted history, the Jurassic coast and famous landmarks – the areas are perfect for memorable weddings. I have fallen in love with both counties and I can’t wait to work with even more talented suppliers as well as newlyweds. Planning a wedding is such an exciting experience, and if I could share one piece of advice, it would be to get organised from the get-go. Make a list of everything important to you both and highlight any priorities. It’s always good to know what you want on the big day, but I recommend not just focusing on one style and ruling everything else out. Start the planning process with an open mind and make sure that you ultimately plan a wedding that symbolises you both. Remember that teamwork makes the dream work! Set in the heart of the Test Valley, Michelmersh Manor Farm is launching new self-catering accommodation that’s perfect for prewedding getaways. The family-run company has coverted a 274-year-old barn into two units for guests to enjoy. The first has two en suite bedrooms and a downstairs toilet, while the other has a king-sized bed on the ground floor for those that can’t manage the stairs and a double bedroom upstairs. Both areas have fully equipped kitchens, wood-burners and cosy furniture. To create an even more fun experience, the company has provided puzzles, games, books and a leaflet of local walks available. There’s even a games room on-site with table tennis, snooker, table football and darts. Guests will love the animals on the farm with more than 300 cows, 100 sheep, chickens, guinea fowl, peacocks and horses. Set in the middle of an agricultural estate in a very private corner of the New Forest, couples will approach Hale Park down a long avenue of lime trees. nline dating has become extremely popular over the last few years, and happened to be where Beth and Joe first met. On their first date, the pair headed to a gin bar to get to know each other more. Beth comments, “We both felt so relaxed in each other’s company – we just clicked! We would do and say certain things simultaneously; we really are the male and female version of each other.” The lovebirds were on holiday in Dubai when Joe proposed. While enjoying cocktails at Burj Al Arab, which held many sentimental memories for Beth, she ordered a Genie in a Bottle cocktail which came with three wishes. She says, “The waitress brought over a treasure chest, which I thought was snacks, until she slowly opened it. Inside was the ring, and Joe dropped to one knee.” The whole thing was captured on camera to show their friends and family back home.

SETTING THE SCENE Beth had been dreaming about her wedding for years and already had an idea of what she wanted, luckily Joe was on board with most of it. Canford School was the first venue the couple visited and, although they’d looked at others, the pair knew it was the one. Beth comments, “We fell in love with the grounds, dramatic staircase, high ceilings, beautiful chandeliers and a fairytale fell.” To match the grandness of the venue, the couple wanted a formal meal. After a tasting session, they settled on truffle parsnip soup to start, mignon of beef fillet or a mushroom shallot with leek and chestnut strudel for main and a trio of miniature desserts. They also had canapés with sausage and mash tarts, burgers and bruschetta. Wood-fired pizzas were served in the evening to keep guests from going hungry, which was a big hit with loved ones. The couple had a three-tiered cake with pink champagne, lemon and elderflower and cookies and cream flavours. Beth says, “A company let us down last minute, and Victoria Carroll Custom Cakes really came to our rescue. The team created a classic design with white roses and green leaves to match my bouquet. We finished it off with our gold mirrored Mr & Mrs Rolfe cake topper. Favours on the day consisted of personalised cookies with a mini black ribbon to fit in with the black-tie theme. Each table had wooden place names to help guests find their seats. In the centre of each table was a large martini glass vase filled with gypsophila to match the bridesmaids’ flowers. There was also ornate gold frames for the table numbers, which matched the table plan, order-of-the-day and welcome sign. As the venue was full of character, the pair didn’t want to take away from the beautiful spaces and kept the décor simple. There was a pretty flower wall with a neon sign, which provided the perfect backdrop for photos while keeping with the day’s overall theme.

LOOKING THE PART Every bride dreams about finding the perfect wedding dress, and Beth always knew she wanted a timeless gown. She picked an Essense of Australia classic satin ballgown with off-the-shoulder sleeves and a cathedral-length veil. She says, “I felt like a princess and knew I wouldn’t get a chance to wear anything like it again. Plus, I don’t think anyone expected me to wear something like it!” For her something old, Beth had a wedding bells charm that belonged to her nan sewn into a blue garter to add a special touch. Beth adds, “My mum helped me get into my dress as I wanted a first reveal photo with my bridesmaids, they hadn’t seen the gown in person due to Covid-19 regulations. Seeing their reactions was really special and made me so excited for Joe’s!” The groom and groomsmen all wore tuxedos, but Joe had a waistcoat while the others had cummerbunds to allow him to stand out. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in black multiway dresses to match the colour scheme. Beth comments, “We loved the contrast of the black with their white bouquets.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE To keep guests entertained, the couple hired a string quartet to play during the day, including as guests arrived and throughout the ceremony. The couple received many comments about how incredible the company was. Beth says, “The songs were so romantic! I always find that live music is so powerful and makes events even more emotional.” Throughout the drinks reception, a magician kept guests occupied and it was definitely a crowd pleaser. To get the party going in the evening, the couple had a DJ and a saxophonist to keep the atmosphere flowing and get guests on the dancefloor.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The whole day was full of many emotions for the couple, but seeing each other for the first time was a moment that will always stand out to them both. The bride says, “I wasn’t sure whether I would get emotional when I walked down the aisle. My brother, who was giving me away, almost made me lose it when I saw his chin going before the ceremony.” She continues, “As soon as those doors opened, me and Joe were both beaming.” Joe he had a lump in his throat when the music started, but he physically relaxed as soon as he saw his bride and couldn’t stop smiling. Another memorable moment on the day was the speeches. The mother-ofthe-bride, best man and the groom all did fantastic jobs and had everyone laughing and crying. The weather on the day had gone from blue skies to heavy wind and rain, but that didn’t stop the pair’s photographer from capturing stunning photos. Beth adds, “The images turned out so stunning; it’s a beautiful venue and one of the reasons we chose it was because it would work for both sun and rain.” The couple’s wedding coordinator at Canford School, was amazing. Beth says, “We couldn’t have done it without Olivia; she went above and beyond on the day and make sure everything went as smoothly as possible.” She continues, “I must say that all of our suppliers were fantastic, and we’re so grateful for their expertise and guidance in the whole wedding process. Credit to our photographer and videographers for doing everything they could to get the best shots in the worst weather conditions!”

HONEYMOON Unfortunately, a day before the pair were due to go on their dream honeymoon to the Maldives, Beth tested positive for Covid-19. She says, “That was a tough pill to swallow, but just a few weeks later we got the shock of our lives when we found out we were pregnant and had baby on the way!” 30

Everything just fell into place from the start of their relationship – they were meant to be together. During a holiday in Jersey, Chris proposed on their anniversary with the beautiful beach as a backdrop. Sophie says, “We were talking, and suddenly he went very quiet. I turned around to find him on one knee.” Here Sophie shares details about their special day... 35

ose and Ndu first met in London more than 10 years ago. While out with a mutual friend, the pair started talking and it turned out that Rose was about to start the same university as Ndu. They became good friends in the weeks leading up to her arrival, which ended up blossoming into a relationship. Rose says, “I was attracted to Ndu’s charm, genuine nature and humour while he loved my intelligence, beauty, and free-spirited demeanour.” She

adds, “It felt as though we’d known each other forever!” During a trip to Venice, the same destination as their first holiday together, Ndu surprised Rose with a stay on a private Island called Isola Della Rosa. During a candlelit dinner overlooking the sunset and city, Ndu popped the question and of course she said yes! Here Rose shares details about their special day...

We wanted a travel-themed wedding as going abroad would have been unrealistic with our number of guests. A friend told us about Froyle Park and we knew it would be perfect for our day.

We had to push our wedding back to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We’d always hoped for good weather in August to use the dome outside for our ceremony.

It rained almost all afternoon, but the sun appeared for much of the ceremony – definitely divine intervention!

We had candles and simple arrangements for our centrepieces.

The bridesmaids had gypsophila bouquets, while mine consisted of roses, forget-me-nots, greenery and rosemary.

REAL WEDDINGS

A choir sung a range of popular songs after the ceremony.

King Solomon’s Catering created a mixture of Nigerian and Jamaican cuisine for guests to enjoy.

The bridesmaids wore blush maxi dresses.

We had a four-tiered cake with beautiful flowers cascading down.

Our table plan was travel themed and tables were named after cities we’d visited together, including Havana, Barcelona, Bridgetown and Venice.

I wore a tulle dress from Galina Signature and heels by Vera Wang. 43

Ndu wore a blue tuxedo with a black bow tie, while the groomsmen wore grey suits with champagne ties.

We loved having all our loved ones together after being apart for so long.

The speeches stood out to us both; everybody was either in fits of laughter or handing tissues around to dry tears.

We had a magical first dance to Mirrors by Justin Timberlake.

Ndu’s cousin Yahael was our master of ceremonies; he brought incredible laughter to the day and got everyone involved in the reception.

FASHION ICON When looking for the perfect suits for groomsmen, the options to consider are bespoke, ready to wear or hired attire. While hiring suits are probably the most costeffective choice, grooms and groomsmen are increasingly choosing to buy their outfits, even though this costs a little more. Choosing to go bespoke will provide a fantastic look, but is the more expensive option and can take longer to receive. We recommend allowing a minimum of four months for any of these choices. The most traditional and formal option for groomsmen is the morning coat, usually a black wool herringbone cloth worn with a grey or buff waistcoat and striped trousers. You can change the waistcoat for a more personalised look. These suits also have grey or blue versions, usually worn with matching trousers. It’s tempting to pick a fashionable style if you’re choosing a lounge suit, but the classic cut won’t date as quickly in the photo album. Different designers will offer different cuts. Just because one dress and jacket didn’t suit you in one shop, doesn’t mean you should rule the style out entirely. BIG-DAY TRANSPORT What questions are important to ask a transport company before we book them for our special day? It’s important to check if you can view the vehicles in person to meet the supplier and see if everything look as good as they appear in photographs. You can then compare what you’re getting for your money if you’re looking at several quotes. You’ll also be able to see how much space is available in the vehicles for the bridal party and whether you can easily get in and out. It’s essential to ensure your suppliers offer a contract and that you’re happy with what’s included before you pay your deposit. If you don’t understand or are unsure about anything, a good supplier will always take the time to explain things clearly. If you’re having different venues for your ceremony and reception, check that the supplier will take you to both and that they’ve quoted clearly for any extra mileage. If you’ve got a large party to transport, it’s worth asking if they can undertake more than one trip if you’re local. Ask the team if they stay for photographs after your ceremony or once you arrive at the reception. They might even be happy to stop off en route at a local beauty spot so that you can really make the most of your hire time. Lastly, check if decorations are included in the price. fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.
