Summer lovin’ H

ello lovely readers and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding. I hope you’ve been enjoying the sunshine and warmer weather; the time has flown by and I can’t believe it’s already August! I personally love summer as the birds are singing in the morning, you can soak up more vitamin D and the evenings are perfect for sitting outside with a glass of gin – something I love to do! As we’re reaching the end of the season, I’m excited to see autumnal nuptials occur. This time of year is popular for rustic, boho, vintage or country-style days and why not have fun with the colour palette and embrace autumn with burnt orange, burgundy, browns and beige shades? Planning a wedding can seem like a daunting task, but don’t panic as we’ve gathered local experts from around the region to share inspiration and offer advice to make this process much more manageable. In this issue you’ll find beauty tips, learn how to find talented suppliers and answers to any big-day dilemmas. When it comes to creating your dream day, remember that communication is vital. Take this opportunity to work together as a team and create a day that represents you both. Stay true to yourselves and don’t be swayed too much by other peoples’ opinions; it’s your day after all! One of the highlights of my job is getting to view so many different wedding styles; seeing couples celebrate their day surrounded by loved ones is truly special. Make sure to turn to our real wedding features, where you’ll get the chance to read love stories and view their special day. If you want your future special day featured in the magazine, enter online here: www.yourhertsbeds.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

SHUTTLEWORTH 01767 627 922 | www.shuttleworth.org/weddings Situated in 5,000 acres of Bedfordshire countryside, Shuttleworth offers an extraordinary setting for weddings and celebrations all year round. When lovebirds book their wedding, the venue provides help from its experienced wedding planner to assist in the run-up and during the wedding. From smaller, more intimate ceremonies to opulent gatherings of up to 2,000 guests, Shuttleworth has a choice of three stunning venues to make the day special and memorable. Based on nine acres, The Shuttleworth Swiss Garden was created in the 1820s by Lord Ongley. With picturesque views, it’s a beautiful venue for a ceremony with 70 people in either of its two licensed venues, including The Swiss Cottage or The Grotto & Fernery. The venue can also arrange a canapé and drinks reception on the perfectly manicured lawns. Built in 1872, Shuttleworth House offers an unrivalled wedding experience. Take exclusive use of the Jacobean-style country house, and choose between an array of grand and finely furnished rooms to hold ceremonies with 200 people, wedding breakfasts for 150 loved ones and evening receptions. Shuttleworth Collection is home to The Hangar 3, also known as Richard Shuttleworth’s hangar. With a backdrop of historical Shuttleworth exhibits and the hangar doors wide open on a summer’s day, it does have the wow factor. This space is suitable for wedding receptions for up to 130 guests (not available for dry hire). If couples have more than 150 guests, couples can hire a piece of the parkland and hire marquees or tipis from a different supplier. 23

As guests approach the impressive building up the sweeping driveway, they’ll fall in love with the property. With its traditional Georgian proportions and tall white columns, the house exudes historic touches and style. The venue has played host to several landowners, lords and ladies over the past 190 years. In the 1970s, the house was a location for the romantic film Raging Moon and there’s also a picturesque fountain that played a part in the Harry Potter movies. There are multiple ceremony spaces including the Hazelwood Suite for 175 guests, the Orangery for 65 people and the outside Manor House Porch for up to 110 guests. The Orangery is also perfect for receptions with 30 guests, as well as the Hazelwood Suite for 200. Other reception areas include the Apsley for 40 guests, the Terrace Marquee for 150 loved ones or the Garden Marquee, which is the latest addition to the venue for 150 guests. The marquee is complete with a spacious foyer area with a unique curved structure, one of five of its kind in Europe, and the ivory lining on the walls is highlighted by an LED starcloth ceiling canopy. When the big day comes to an end, the delightful annexe offers 62 bedrooms for guests to retreat to. Couples booking the venue will receive a free menu-tasting session, complimentary cream tea when viewing the property (first initial show round) and first anniversary stay offers.

The Grand Marquee overlooking the grounds can fit 140 guests, while The Regency Barn can accommodate 135. Or why not opt for The Long Gallery overlooking the terrace or The Sky Bar for 250 people? Couples are offered a tasting session when they book the venue for their wedding.

REAL WEDDINGS

HOLLY AND PAUL

Images courtesy of www.rafeabrook.co.uk

Holly and Paul had a socially distanced wedding on Saturday 18th July 2020, at Christ Church in Ware. After their original date was postponed, the lovebirds were desperate to get married and tied the knot surrounded by immediate family. Friends and neighbours gathered outside their house to wave Holly and her dad off in the morning. She says, “I was speechless at their kindness and the fact they had made such an effort. When we got to the church, more of my friends were waiting outside to greet us.” As the wedding service had social distancing in place, the couple were worried it would look odd or create a strange atmosphere. However, it was the complete opposite and there was a beautiful, intimate environment. One guest said, “It was the best wedding ever and just goes to show you don’t need fancy receptions to have a special day.” The couple’s photographer ensured the photos and video were available just hours after the service. It meant loved ones could watch the service on the day, which was amazing.

MAYSSA AND JAMES Mayssa and James exchanged vows at Stevenage Registry Office on Tuesday 6th April 2021. After the day being postponed twice, the couple were so excited to finally get married. They love how their wedding photos turned out, especially the photo session in the forest with their photographer, Rafe Abrook Photography, who captured stunning shots. The couple were surrounded by their immediate family, including James’s mum Paula, his brother Lawrence, Mayssa’s daughter Jude and their two beautiful dogs Misha and Henry. The bride says, “We’re extremely grateful to Paula Baldwin for her support to plan this beautiful experience and Jude and Lawrence for making an effort to be with us on this day.” 29

LAURA AND MARTIN

Images courtesy of https://rafeabrookphotography.pixieset.com

Laura and Martin’s ceremony took place at Ampthill Registry Office on Saturday 18th July 2020. The final confirmation that the wedding was going ahead was just over two weeks before the special day and they still managed to pull off the perfect wedding. When the couple came out of the registry office, they were greeted by 40 socially distanced guests who came to show their love and support for the pair. It does show that no matter what, love will always win. Laura says, “Our top tip for couples would be to have your most immediate loved ones there and your day will be perfect – you don’t need as many people or as much fuss as you think.” The couple had the most amazing grazing platter offered to guests to keep them from going hungry in the evening – the perfect idea for intimate nuptials.

STUART AND CHERYL Stuart and Cheryl said “I do” on the 28th May 2021, at St Nicholas Church in Stevenage and then continued the celebrations at The Farmhouse at Redcoat in Hitchin. When they started planning the wedding, it was clear that numbers could be limited, but that didn’t stop them from having the perfect wedding. The pair opted for local companies, which work out perfectly. Cheryl says, “I can’t fault any of the suppliers we chose, they were all brilliant, and I didn’t have to worry about anything. We had to move our original date, but everyone was so accommodating.” I love that the couple didn’t let Covid-19 ruin their celebrations and they’re having a big party next year where they will hold the entire event again so all their friends and family can be a part of the day. Flick to page 36 to discover more about their special day!

HOLLY AND CONOR Holly and Conor didn’t let a pandemic ruin their special day. The couple said “I do” at Ampthill Registry on the 11th September 2020 and then held a reception at Leaside Hotel. The groom says, “Our wedding was very different to our original plan due to Covid. We originally had 120 guests attending a three-day event in the South of France with a welcoming barbecue, the big day and a pool party on Sunday. We ended up being married in our hometown with 30 guests but it was still just as amazing.” With only two weeks to plan their local wedding, it was a no-brainer to the couple who picked The Leaside Hotel for the reception. They worked together with the staff to create a day that reflected them. The pair could not have live music because of restrictions, but the couple stayed positive and it actually worked in their favour because everyone could mingle more and make lots of fun memoires. 30

W

ith the wedding industry suffering over the past yearand-a-half due to the coronavirus pandemic, finding new inspiration and content for social media has been a real struggle for many wedding suppliers. That’s why Brad Gommon Photography decided to organise his very first styled shoot. He says, “I’ve been interested in doing this for a long time and I thought it would be the perfect way to meet and network with other local wedding suppliers, inspire others and provide lots of fresh new images for all the suppliers involved. This meant we could start building our brands back up again, ready for the easing of restrictions and the start of the wedding season ahead.” The talented team of suppliers took inspiration from Bellows Mill’s natural elements and beautiful settings. The venue was decorated with rustic and elegant touches, including reclaimed wood décor, soft candlelight and blush-pink florals with foliage such as eucalyptus. A relaxed, informal set-up of trestle tables, handmade benches and a lakeside ceremony, that perfectly matches the peaceful and tranquil surroundings, completed the shoot.

IS ALL AROUND

Stuart and Cheryl’s beautiful spring wedding featured pastel hues Images courtesy of Rafe Abrook Photography

S

tuart and Cheryl found each other through mutual friends and got on really well from their first meeting. The pair shared the same sense-of-humour and everything seemed so natural together. Cheryl says, “Not long after we started going out, I knew I had found my soulmate. Stuart makes me feel special; he’s so supportive and is always there for anyone who needs his support.” During the lockdown, the couple were sitting in the garden enjoying the sunshine and a glass of champagne when the idea of marriage 36

came up. After looking at venues for Cheryl’s special birthday, Stuart discovered that many spaces had already been booked for weddings. After playing around suggesting they get married to find a venue, Cheryl jokingly said ‘maybe we should’. Stuart knew he wanted to propose and found the most beautiful engagement ring. Cheryl says, “Of course I said yes, I didn’t realise how much I wanted to marry Stuart until that moment!” Here Cheryl shares details about their special day…

REAL WEDDINGS

We knew numbers would be limited because of Covid-19 restrictions, but we knew it would be perfect as long as our children and grandchildren could join us. We were lucky enough to have 30 guests on the day!

I wore a Stella York ballgown-style dress, which I accessorised with a veil, a simple drop-pearl necklace and matching earrings.

To match our pastel colour scheme, we had a simple leaf design for the table plan and place cards.

The Farmhouse at Redcoats is the perfect wedding venue, the staff were outstanding and nothing was too much trouble – Charlotte was fabulous and deserves a special mention.

Each table was decorated with a pastel floral arrangement, hurricane lamps and candles.

We opted for a simple but tasty two-tiered cake with carrot and Victoria sponge flavours.

I wanted to incorporate yellow freesias as they were my mum’s favourite flower and my dad’s favourite colour.

We named each table after places we had visited, including Rome, Cape Town, Funchal and Sóller. 37

37

Pastel-hanging lanterns decorated our reception space and created such a beautiful effect. We had an amazing three-course wedding breakfast and a barbecue in the evening.

Our transport on the day was Stuart’s late father’s Jaguar; we wanted him to be part of the day and this was the perfect way.

To ensure all our friends and family can be a part of the day, we’re going to host the whole event again next year with the same suppliers. My daughters provided photos of my parents to tie around my bouquet.

Stuart loves suits that stand out and spent a long time choosing the fabric, colour of the stitching, the lining, tie, shoes and socks. Stuart and his groomsman, his brother Mark, had matching threepiece suits as a tribute to their mum who used to dress them the same as children. Despite being on a tight schedule, HRH Holmes & Son turned the suits around quickly and they fitted like a glove.

38

I just felt so special and didn’t stop smiling the whole day.

It was important that we included our four daughters in the day. That’s why Lucy gave me away, Katie did a reading, Jenny was our witness while Sally was the usher and looked after all the guests.

Our granddaughter was the only bridesmaid; she wore a navy-blue dress and a silver jacket. We had our grandson as the pageboy; he wore navy blue trousers and a waistcoat.

REAL WEDDINGS

We both felt so happy and emotional on the day! Stuart was quite nervous before the ceremony and it probably didn’t help that I was late!

We were delighted to become husband and wife after being together for more than 20 years. Using local companies really benefited our day; everyone was so easy to work with and accommodating when we moved our original date due to Covid-19.

The church ceremony made us feel very special; we had a small choir and wedding bells chimed away. After months of not being able to do anything, it created such a special memory and feeling.

We visited the Lake District for our honeymoon and had the most fantastic time! We stayed in a small coach house and it was the perfect way to reminisce the day.

We would advise other couples to have the wedding they want and don’t try to please others. Only focus on the important factors to you both and enjoy every moment because the day goes so quickly.

he Covid-19 pandemic has certainly shaken the wedding industry, but many suppliers stayed positive and kept looking forward while adapting for intimate weddings. During a winter’s night in lockdown, Amy Murphy Photography found herself flicking through images while dreaming of those warm spring days and hot summer evenings. Shortly afterwards, owner Amy created a concept brochure for a styled shoot, put together a colour palette and compiled a list of fantastic local suppliers. She says, “I wanted to incorporate everything that encapsulates summer in my mind while including a boho and countryside feel. It was amazing to organise this event while bringing together different elements that complemented each other so well – I knew this was very achievable with the list of talented suppliers on board!” 45

RING-A-DING-DING

www.beckyharleyphotography.co.uk

We’re looking for wedding rings, but we have no idea where to start as there are so many on the market. What advice can you share when it comes to finding the perfect pieces? Choosing your wedding rings should be an enjoyable experience; sipping a glass of fizz and trying on different rings with your partner is a memory to treasure. It’s all about selecting the best fit and style to match your engagement ring. It should be the same metal as the other ring to reduce wear and tear, but it must complement the style and feel comfortable. For the gents, it’s often a tricky experience as many haven’t worn a ring before, that’s why coming into the boutique and having an opportunity to try different widths and profiles is the best idea. Here at Baker Brothers Diamonds in Bedford, we have a very relaxed atmosphere with a team of experts who love to share your experience while guiding you through the variations of rings while answering all questions. We will also clean and sparkle your engagement ring while you’re trying on wedding rings. Lizzie Mcauley | Baker Brother Diamonds | www.bakerbrothersdiamonds.com

BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL I’m wearing an off-the-shoulder dress for our wedding and wanted to know what hairstyle would work best with it. What would you suggest? There are plenty of hairstyle options when it comes to offthe-shoulder dresses. For brides opting for this dress style, a dreamy and romantic up do with soft waves would complement this style and wouldn’t compromise the gown’s details. I like half-up half-down styles with beach waves for these types of gowns, but the most important factor to consider is your personal style and what would you feel comfortable in – that’s an important question I ask all my brides. I would always give my bride a trial with both looks but as a bridal specialist, I can offer advice but it’s down to personal preference. Danine Marie Eary | Danine Marie Hair www.daninemariehair.com 50

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR We’re having an intimate and romantic wedding on Valentine’s Day in a country manor. What soft and romantic hairstyles work best with the venue? A soft and simple style, which complements your dress would be the perfect option. The weather may be a little on the temperamental side of things, depending on the time of year, but a loose fishtail braid would work perfectly whatever the weather. The soft and effortless look works on various hair types and textures; hair stylists can even include additional hair to add extra length and thickness. An alternative idea for an up do is a low chignon pinned to the nape of the neck with some soft curls around the face. This timeless and elegant look will complement any bride. HAIR GOALS When should I start thinking about booking my hair artist, and do you have any tips for finding a company that’s a perfect fit? It’s never too early to book your wedding hairstylist, especially if your heart is set on a specific company as some are booked up to two years in advance and have limited availability through peek seasons (June to September). Here are some tips: ❤ Websites are great, but I find that it’s a very polished view of companies work. Have a good look through their Instagram or Facebook pages because you’ll get a more day-to-day view and see if their work style suits you and your wedding vibe. ❤ Look at your chosen venue’s recommended supplier list as most will have a couple of local hairstylists that have worked at the location – this can be useful if you’re not local to the area. I’d always go with a recommendation as the hard work is done for you. ❤ Find a price your comfortable paying, there are hairstylists at every price point with the most experienced being more expensive. If you receive a quote that doesn’t work for you, keep looking. ❤ Calling for a chat is the best way to see if a hairstylist can meet all of your needs. They should make you feel comfortable and confident that you’re in the best hands possible so you can sit back and enjoy your day. SUMMER LOVIN’

SEARCHING FOR THE ONE What style of dress will give me a timeless look for my manor house wedding? A timeless look involves the elegance of a low back, lace dress. One of our most popular styles is our Amelia dress, which features beautiful guipure lace over blush silk and a straight-cut skirt that falls perfectly over any body shape. Changes to the design of this dress can be made with our bespoke service, including adding a train for a more dramatic effect or taking off the short sleeves. This gown looks incredible with a detachable tulle overlay skirt for the ceremony, which can then be removed for the reception – the perfect two-in-one dress. Emily White | Emily Victoria White www.emilyvictoriawhite.co.uk 52

My hubby-to-be and I are getting married next summer and would like to incorporate the season into my jewellery. Do you have any suggestions? The summer season provides endless inspiration for weddings and includes plenty of jewellery choices. Adding floral motifs in flower-shaped earrings, pendants and bracelets are great ways to add a summery vibe into your bridal bling. These could be inspired by blooms in your bouquet or summer meadow forms. The boho look always feels very summery. Think layered-gold chains and anklets, flower-inspired hair slides or headpieces, which can all achieve a relaxed, summer look. Colour-wise, if your wedding scheme allows it, aqua paired with coral and pinks set in yellow gold couldn’t be more perfect! Try aquamarine, amazonite or turquoise, paired with cherry quartz, morganite, pink sapphire, or coral. You could even design a set of bespoke jewellery for you and the bridesmaids incorporating these tones, which look so good layered together in clusters of gemstone beads. Finally, you can’t go wrong with diamonds as they look best in the bright summer sunshine. Jodie Gearing | Jodie Gearing Bespoke Jewellery Design www.jodiegearing.com

BUZZ

BYE BYE TO DRY

When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. BEAUTY NEWS

ROSY GLOW

Some exciting newness from Pixi Beauty has hit the shelves recently and I’m nuts about the +Rose Glow-y Powder (£14) in particular. This https://youtu.be/EO3_TuWvc3E silky soft, rose infused, multiuse powder can be applied as a veil of blush or highlighter adding a touch of radiance and luminosity as it brightens the complexion. What’s more, the natural mineral formula contains ceremides to give time-release moisture to the skin. THE CLEANSING EXPRESS

Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk

POLISH PERFECTION

Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.

SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk

BE AT PEACE

Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com

HAIR REPAIR

If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 67

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

H

Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

PRETTY AS A PICTURE

As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!

Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.

Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.

We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

A room full of candles is a must!

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.

Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.

This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 69

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT

TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

THE WOW FACTOR We’re looking for gorgeous stationery for our wedding, but we’re not sure what style to go for or what we should be asking suppliers. What would you suggest? First and foremost, think about the feelings or atmosphere you want to create on the day as your stationery should enhance the wedding. Think about what makes you stand out as a couple and how you can reflect this. Look at examples of different types of stationery and think about elements you like and dislike or how companies can tailor the pieces to reflect your vision. A good starting point can be thinking about your venue; is it a small and intimate chapel in your hometown, a modern hotel in the city or a rustic barn in the countryside? Also, think about what colours you want to be included. For example, if the bridesmaids are wearing blush pink, you can tie the aesthetic together by including the same shade for the stationery. Remember, it’s not just about how the items look; it’s also a tactile experience as different paper types and finishes can further compliment your theme. Ask suppliers what they can do for you, here are a few questions to ask… ❤ Do they organise the print along with the design? ❤ Do they have a pre-set design that you need to tweak? ❤ Can they provide you with a fully-bespoke package? ❤ What can they do to work within your budget?

A CLASS ACT We’re having an intimate wedding and want to create a great atmosphere despite the reduced numbers; what would you suggest? The best way to create a special, magical and memorable atmosphere at an intimate wedding is to really choose your music carefully. Start by making sure you’re selecting the correct instrumentalists or vocalists to perform at the wedding. Then create a playlist with your favourite song choices and an array of new music to make an occasion extremely personal. I have a wealth of experience performing at weddings of all shapes and sizes and often, couples comment to me afterwards that my music made their ceremony!

SETTING THE TONE How can a celebrant help us make the ceremony extra special? Often, the main reason for using a celebrant is because couples want to add special touches to their ceremony and would rather have someone telling the story of who they are and the journey they’ve taken together. The experience is far from a traditional wedding ceremony that you might expect or have experienced before. That said, couples often still want the usual highlights of a traditional wedding such as an entrance, exchanging vows, rings and the “I dos” – all of which a celebrant can include if desired. As well as the personal story, a celebrant can add so much more. Add symbolic elements such as hand-tying, candle lighting or planting a tree. Or why not include guests? Maybe your parents will be involved by placing the ribbons across your wrists for the hand tying section or as part of a wine sharing ritual (one of my favourites) where they might offer you wine to drink as an acceptance into the family, which you in turn share with your partner for life. Your guests should be listening to your ceremony while thinking ‘this is so them’ throughout. Kelly Hawes | Kelly Hawes Celebrant | www.kellyhcelebrant.co.uk

PRETTY AS A PICTURE We’re clueless when it comes to photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture? You can ask to see a full wedding gallery from your photographer to view images they typically photograph. If there’s anything in particular that’s important to you, just let them know. Maybe there’s a special piece of jewellery or the perfume/aftershave you’re wearing – we love to know the significance of these personal items too! Or maybe you want a specific person’s reaction to the song played as you walk down the aisle or enter the wedding breakfast. I like to have a catch-up call with my couples to run through the group combinations they’d like when it comes to group shots. The most popular ones include parents, immediate family, and the wedding party shots and then we discuss other options such as close friends or other relatives. Being open with your photographer about what you want will mean you’ll fall in love with your final photos.

CAPTURE THE MOMENT How can we add seasonal touches to our wedding video? It will be represented in the film if you thoughtfully reflect the current season or your wedding theme in your decorations, venue, attire and more. These details help tell the story of the wedding, set the tone for the day and evoke the atmosphere. During a beach wedding, we’ll capture the breeze, the sun and the joy of being outside. At a Christmas wedding, we’ll highlight the crisp sparkle of the air and the cosiness and warmth of the venue. You don’t have to worry about putting seasonal touches into the video as we, the creatives, will take care of it. Justina Rudé | Just Happy Together https://justhappytogether.com

The darling buds

fo May

Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade II-listed Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dogfriendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.

STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy villagegreen views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort,

amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.

EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best

starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.

EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morrisdesigned stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a well-earned pint makes it all worth it.

BOOK IT: Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis. Visit www.thealicehawthorn.com 88
