We’re expecting to see many Bridgerton-inspired weddings this summer after the popular show released season two and the nation fell in love with Kate and Anthony. Expect to see plenty of lace, ruffles, gloves, capes and delicate blues – it’s going to be oh-so glamours. Neutrals and earthy tones are also trending at the moment, with the main focus on nature with foliage, driftwood and different textures being used.

TRUE LOVE Alex and Alex had an amethyst-themed wedding at Sheene Mill Images courtesy of Amy Murphy Photography and William Hilton Photography 26

When looking for the perfect venue, the pair came across Sheene Mill and knew it would fit their amethyst and rustic theme perfectly. As the couple had an intimate wedding in mind, they found it easy to envision their big day here. The property was something out of a fairytale with a sparkling pond with ducks and swans – they loved the wildlife aspect.

Exactly one year later, in the same location the couple had professed their love, the lovebirds became engaged and set out to create their dream wedding.

SETTING THE SCENE

Finally, on the 30th of May 2018, the pair found themselves on a bench in a nearby park. They both shared their feelings and realised they loved each other. Alex Covey says, “We had both gone so long thinking that we were unlovable and shutting ourselves off from the world, but we had finally found our place.”

The wedding stylist really went all in with the theme, and the venue looked amazing! There were purple glasses and edible crystals dotted around the venue as well as purple sashes on the back of every chair, a purple tablecloth, a welcoming sign and a balloonFlowersarch.around the venue added a romantic setting, especially on the pergola where the ceremony was held, and the blooms represented the pair’s favourite colours. The bridal bouquet was elaborate and a beautiful explosion of colour, as was the groom’s buttonhole.Thecouple created little gift bags for guests to take home, which featured mementoes of the day such as a small amethyst crystal, purple hearts with the pair’s names plus wedding date and bags of seeds to grow their own purple flowers. There were even special activity booklets made by CherryTop Weddings, with little quizzes and games about the newlyweds to share their love story. These were

Alex Covey and Alex Frances first met in college when they were both 16. They were studying animal care at the time and already knew they had a shared interest. The pair were both extremely anxious and shy, which meant they found it very difficult to talk to one another. Due to the severity of their shyness, they didn’t truly talk to each other for a long time. They we were both overcoming a bad school life that stifled their social capabilities. It took until April 2018 for them to finally get the chance to properly become friends when they unknowingly chose the same work experience placement at an animal rescue centre. They were both frightened of this new environment, but having one another there made them feel safe and being alone allowed them to speak a little bit. Work experience didn’t last very long and they didn’t cross paths that often, so their friendship didn’t truly get a chance to develop as they’dOnehoped.daythey both mistakenly received a bad report from their supervisor and Alex Covey took it upon himself to find out if there had been a mistake. He says, “Of course there had been, and this whole horrible ordeal went from a curse to a blessing, as I realised it gave me the chance to reach out to Alex on Facebook to let her know.” He adds, “From that first message, we just clicked and spoke to each other online nonstop. Messaging was much easier for shy people like us, and we built up our confidence to have proper conversations even at college. We spent more time together, and felt our anxiety slipping away.”

REAL WEDDINGS 27

The couple had an small wedding with six guests who all sat around one table. In the centre was a large bouquet and little menu cards. Even though the couple didn’t have a seating plan, they still had little place names made from amethyst agate stone to help guests find their seats.

The cake looked too good to eat and followed the amethyst theme with a purple-marbled effect and gold foil. It was a work of art and tasted just as good as it looked. Mr and Mrs Covey loved the delicious food provided by Sheene Mill – the dishes varied and were the perfect portion sizes. The canapés after the ceremony was a big hit with guests as was the evening food, including the fish and chip cones and pizza slices. Guests loved the pick ‘n’ mix sweet cart too –there was more than enough food for everybody.

28 great for keeping guests entertained while the couple went off for their photos and was the perfect ice breaker.

The couple both felt nervous about being in front of many different people, but their excitement pushed them through. The ceremony itself was the highlight of their day. It had been raining before the “I dos”, and they were worried the ceremony would have to take place indoors. However, a bright spot came just in time as the violinist started playing music. The groom was blown away when the bride came around the corner and walked down the aisle. He says, “It was the most amazing sight I had ever seen and will be burned into my heart forever. She looked so beautiful in her dress; it made me shed a tear or two, which is very rare of me.”

LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding the perfect dress, the bride fell in love with a St Patrick gown called Goldsmith. She says, “I chose this elegant style because I loved how it provided coverage while still showing off my figure. I liked how vintage and timeless it looked and the long train at the back allowed me to create the perfect entrance.”

The couple hired a violinist to play several songs before and during the ceremony to keep guests entertained. The pair had curated a Spotify playlist to play in the background during the rest of the day’s events; this featured various songs they both loved. The guests were pleased to hear some of their favourite songs featured as well.

The groom chose his suit from Chimney Formal Menswear in Royston. After trying several suits and combinations, he decided on a deep blue one with a faint checked pattern. To finish his look, he opted for a tan waistcoat with an orange checked design that suited him perfectly.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

There was a special guest in the form of a barn owl named Bilbo, who was the ring bearer. Friends and family were amazed by the owl and loved having the opportunity to handle him after the ceremony, as well as a smaller owl called Fuzz.  In the evening, guests played a murder mystery game where everyone got into character, which was so much fun.

The celebrant, Sylvia, made the ceremony extra special and recounted their love story in such a beautiful way. The pair had a sand ceremony where they both poured coloured sand into one large container to mix the colours, thereby mixing their hearts and souls together. A special moment was when the lovebirds locked love letters away in a special box that was only to be opened on their first wedding anniversary. A funny moment from the day was when the groom went to meet his bride halfway down the aisle and tripped on a candle. He comments, “It was very typical of me! Thankfully

Ware Priory was the perfect backdrop to Sherill and Massimo’s joyful wedding Images courtesy of Milda Vasile Photography

Sherill and Massimo love story began at A Midsummer Night’s Dream party in London. Sherill says, “I was living in New York at the time and popped home to London for a few weeks for work and to see loved ones. After we met at the party and chatted for ages, Massimo asked if I wanted to hang out while I was home and I knew I wanted to spend some more time with this funny, interesting fella.” Massimo comments, “I saw her at the otherside of the room with her beaming smile, beautiful hair and incredible energy radiating from her. I knew this amazing girl had to be in my life somehow.”

Our friend who is a tree surgeon gave us logs, which we used for the centrepieces with glass jars and flowers on top. To match our spring colour scheme, we had tulips, roses, daffodils, gerberas and carnations flowers – anything brightly coloured. We loved the beautiful stained-glass windows and period features in the ceremony room, and the blank canvas reception space, which allowed us to decorate everything exactly how we wanted. Our goal was to create a day that reflected our personalities, brought joy to ourguests and didn’t bankrupt us! We liked Ware Priory as everything could take place in one setting, which is exactly what we were looking for.

REAL WEDDINGS 33

My brother was our toastmaster and absolutely brought the house down! Massimo wore an Italian checked three-piece suit with a navy shirt, white Vans, a baker boy cap and a vintage pocket watch and chain. We used a company called The Spitting Pig Co for the wedding breakfast, and the team served a hog roast with all the trimmings. In the evening we had food from Mozzarella Fellas and drinks from Your Event Bar. We were absolutely thrilled with all the catering on the day, as were our guests! I wanted a dress that made me feel lovely and allowed me to dance the night away. I picked a full-length ruby red dress that I bought online – I loved it straight away.

We had a semi-naked Victoria sponge cake, which featured fresh flowers. Our canapés were from Bridget’s Tea Room, which is somewhere we love to gofor tea. We wanted to support their amazing work with adults with learning difficulties.

34

For our honeymoon, we went to Lisbon for a week and had an amazing time!We visited beautiful places including, gardens, the coast, a classical concert, aPortuguese traditional restaurant and a football match!

35 REAL WEDDINGS

I borrowed pearl my mum and wore a couple of my own gold bracelets. We had a live band called Scooby in the evening; the team was a massive hit withguests and playing an eclectic range of music.

It sounds cliché, but being in a room with so many loved ones was incredibly special. It’s been a strange couple of years for everyone, so looking around and seeing people enjoying themselves was priceless.

Summer lovin

After meeting during a night out, Kirsty and Luke click instantly and discovered many shared interests. After a few dates and getting to know each other better, the pair started dating and never looked back. Luke proposed at Kynance Cove in Cornwall, which they had visited a few years before and had the most amazing time. They both knew if a proposal was on the cards, it could only take place there. However, Luke still managed to keep it a complete surprise. Kirsty says, “After going for a long early walk along the clifftops, Luke set up our camera on a tripod ready to take a photo. Unbeknown to me, he’d actually pressed record and got down on one knee. Luckily, there wasn’t a person in sight to witness the many tears that followed.”

36

Having my dad walk me down the aisle was the most special part of the day; he’s had three previous heart attacks and we were unsure we’d get to experience that moment together as our day was constantly being postponed due to Covid.

The gardens feature a beautiful wisteria walkway, fountain plaza, Japanese tea houses and a woodland area with stunning flowers.

Fanhams Hall was the first venue we viewed, and we ended up booking it the same day. The Jacobean mansion has a fantastic Grade II listed hall that features a large stone fire place, which is where we had our wedding breakfast.

We used our bridesmaid bouquets as centrepieces and decorated the tables using wooden placemats, candles and printed photos from our engagement shoot.

37AA REAL WEDDINGS 37

Our goals were to enjoy every second of the planning process and to have a stress-free wedding.

The venue has the most incredible ceremony space, which overlooks 27 acres of manicured gardens.

Tom Ryder Wedding performed throughout the evening, taking requests from guests and performing during our first dance.

The gown I loved was three sized too big, but we discovered an alterations company who found the right material to create the straps I’d wanted and the team took in the dress considerably – it became exactly what I was after.

For our place names, we opted for white card and black calligraphy to match our classic-styled wedding.

The groom wore a navy three-piece suit with a pale blue floral tie, pocket square, brown belt, watch and shoes. The groomsmen wore the same, but with a pale blue tie. We decorated the reception space with festoon lighting, rustic love letters, a classic sweet cart and eucalyptus leaves wrapped around the wall lights.

38

We opted for a range of tasty cupcakes, including Nutella, Jammy Dodgers, lemon and Terry’s Chocolate Orange flavours alongside our cookies and cream cake.

White aisle runner, LED love letters festoon Beat the Buzzer game during our drinks reception to break the ice between guests. We also had lawn games such as giant Jenga.

lighting, www.spjuk.comWehada giant

We enjoyed canapés after the ceremony, which included duck spring rolls with a hoisin dip, vegetable samosas with mango chutney, scampi and chip skewers and crispy coated chicken with tartare mayonnaise.

After the wedding breakfast, an incredible magician performed a magic show for guests. Blousey white roses, lisianthus, freesias, Veronica flowers and wild mixed eucalyptus made up my bouquet. The bridesmaids had the same, but with the addition of sweet avalanche roses.

39 REAL WEDDINGS

Luke had planned his speech for weeks and ordered a personalised Arsenal shirt with Mrs Gillingham on the back. He planned to recreate a football transfer during his speech, but left the shirt at home and only realised 10 minutes before. The bridesmaids wore pale blue maxi dresses.

South Farm was the perfect location for James and Tina’s wedding

James and Tina’s adventure first started online. Tina says, “It felt strange meeting that way as we only lived within walking distance of each other. But I’m sure the universe has a plan, and we met exactly when we were meant to.” James was smitten as soon as he laid eyes on Tina. “She was gorgeous and had a lovely personality that’s so friendly, kind, funny and easy-going”, says James. Every moment spent together was perfect, and the pair fell slowly fell in love. James proposed to Tina back in 2019 by a river near their village; it was a moment they’d never forget. James says, “It was a beautiful summer’s day, and I said we should go for a picnic. We picked a spot under an oak tree, and I popped the question after dessert – Tina said ‘yes’ instantly.” He adds, “We had a glass of champagne to celebrate before a herd of cows came stampeding into the field. They quickly spotted us and came to see what food was on offer. We had to make a quick escape before they ate the lot – we still laugh about it now.”

Here James shares details about their special day...

“We’d initially planned to get married in March 2021, but we had to postpone due to the pandemic. Given the distance that the various restrictions had put between friends and family, we wanted our wedding to be a chance for everyone to let their hair down, catch up and enjoy“Ourthemselves.twochildren were very much part of the planning process; they love farms, tractors and animals – so South Farm was the perfect wedding venue for us. The wedding planners were great at helping us make decisions and made the whole process easier. Tina says, “I wore an exclusive gown from Sincerity Bridal that I picked only a couple of weeks before the wedding. It was an dreamworthy dress with a high neckline, full skirt, a low-square back and an oversized bow. For accessories, I had a simple veil and white satin shoes. I was so happy with my look on the day. I couldn’t have wished for more from the dress and the excellent hair and make-up continues, “I wore a blue three-piece suit from the Savoy Taylors Guild with brown leather shoes and a blue herringbone tie. The best man wore a two-piece version of the same suit with a matching tie, while our sons wore navy suits. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in halter-neck dresses.

“We had a handwritten table plan framed on an easel, and we kept our table names simple with white numbers printed on brown card. For favours, each guest received a packet with forget-me-not seeds inside for our guests to sow after the day. We had a beautiful wild mixture of seasonal white blooms for our wedding flowers, which included plenty of foliage. Each table featured rustic glass jars with eucalyptus, peonies and hydrangeas inside. To keep guests from going hungry, we had canapés followed by a three-course wedding breakfast provided by South Farm. Afterwards, we served orange, lemon and chocolate cupcakes.”

42

“To keep our guests entertained, we used the venue’s resident DJ in the evening. He had a list of our ten favourite tracks and allowed guests to request their own songs. Our master of ceremonies Chris was brilliant throughout the day, he would joke with guests and kept everything flowing while taking the stress away from us.

What’s not to love about this beautiful shoot, which features seasonal spring flowers and a cream colour scheme? The shoot was inspired by the English countryside, with the aim to showcase the beautiful landscape of the Brickendonbury Estate. Shoot coordinator Kim Ola at Ola Portraits says, “I was captivated by the idyllic location when I first visited the estate, so I gathered a small team of talented suppliers to work their magic.” She adds, “We thought the venue’s river was the perfect setting to enhance through the use of delicate fresh florals, and the model wore a flowing gown to create a soft dreamy look that mirrored the elegant venue.”

HAIR GOALS

I want to wear my hair loose for my wedding day, how do I make sure it looks it’s best? Making sure your hair is at its peak condition is key when it comes to creating your desired look, whether you’re thinking of embracing your natural texture or glamming things up with waves or curls. Using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type is essential, followed by a protein spray to help nourish your hair and a deep conditioning treatment once a fortnight before the big day. For the best possible hold, I like to layer a few lightweight products to create a natural look that will hold all day. For maximum holding power, volume powder applied at the roots and some backcombing will give amazing control – this is excellent for the gorgeous Hollywood waves. When going for a more natural wave or curl, don’t overuse products as this can create a stiff and uncomfortable look. If you’re worried about curls dropping, a couple of strips of clip-in extensions can help. When choosing a veil, I always advise against one with a bulky plastic comb. A smaller metal comb will be easier to hold in place with the help of a couple of grips and a bit of backcombing –plus it’s a lot easier to remove.

Most of us have dreamt of creating our dream wedding look, from a wow-factor gown, showstopping make-up and stunning hair – don’t forget those perfect finishing touches. We’ve gathered some of the top fashion and beauty experts from around the counties to provide top tips and advice to make the process much easier.

We always encourage brides to come in with an open mind and only bring a small, intimate group of people you trust. They’ll think you look perfect no matter what. At Enchanted Bridal Boutique, we pride ourselves on truly wanting to match brides with their perfect dress. One they feel and look absolutely stunning in and can’t wait to wear.

I’m nervous about my first bridal appointment; what can I expect and what should I take with me?

Being nervous about wedding dress shopping is normal; we hear it from our brides daily. Clients worry a lot about what styles to pick, their budget, what their family will think and body image.

There’s no need for added stress, so we say arrive safely and let’s get the journey started. There’s no need to bring anything with you as we have everything needed.

FINDING THE ONE

Melanie Rich | Enchanted Bridal www.enchantedbridalboutique.co.ukBoutique

I’d love to wear false eyelashes on my wedding day to really make my eyes stand out, but I’ve never managed to successfully apply a set. Do you have any tips? Lashes are usually included if you’ve booked a professional makeup artist for your wedding day. The supplier will have a selection for you to choose from and will help you select the perfect ones to suit your eye shape and make-up style.

Lash extensions can be a great option, especially if you’re going away on a honeymoon after your big day. But if you’d rather not commit to the cost and maintenance, strip lashes are the perfect alternative. There are so many styles in the market now from supernatural options to ones full of volume and something in between. But these can be tricky to apply, and the glue can be messy and uncomfortable. If you’re doing your own make-up on your wedding day and are not confident in applying your lashes, there’s now a clever new alternative – magnetic strip lashes. Rather than a traditional lash glue, these new lashes come with a magnetic eyeliner that somehow secures the false lashes to your lash line. You can buy these on the high street, and they come in various styles.

FINISHING TOUCHES

What are your top expert beauty tips to get me looking my best? Skincare is so important if you want make-up that doesn’t only look amazing, but has the longevity you’re looking for on your wedding day. Ensure you use a cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, eye cream morning and evening and a light exfoliator once a week – don’t forget your SPF during the day too. Some brides like to treat themselves to a few facials in the lead-up to their wedding day. This isn’t a necessary step, but it helps ensure your skin is in tip-top shape for a flawless make-up application. My make-up style always incorporates glowy skin. Although I achieve this with an array of products, taking care of your skin before your trial and the big day will mean you’re already glowing before the glamming process begins.

THE ONLY WAY IS GLAM

We’re trying to keep our wedding as eco-friendly as possible, but I’m struggling with what to look for in jewellery. Can you help us? We love that couples are making their special day more sustainable and eco friendly. Using pieces already in your family is the easiest way to make your wedding jewellery sustainable – this could be a relative’s necklace or bracelet. Some nearlyweds even use family wedding rings that get passed down through generations. Not only do the items carry beautiful sentimental value and history, but it saves you money and is a form of Ifrecycling.youdon’t have any wedding bling in the family or your tastes are too different, the next step might be to look at pre-owned jewellery. We have a beautiful selection of pre-owned items in store that couples often purchase for their wedding day. Each piece has a different story to tell.

Another option is lab-grown diamonds, which are growing in popularity. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds; the only difference is that they’ve been grown in a laboratory under particular conditions rather than in the earth. This makes them more sustainable as mining diamonds can significantly impact the environment and only costs 20 to 40 per cent less than natural diamonds, which is more sustainable for your bank balance.

Finally, gold jewellery itself is very sustainable and is one of the most recycled and re-used materials – no one throws gold in the bin! It gets melted down and re-made into something new. Beyond the jewellery you’re purchasing, maybe check out the business you’re buying it from. Does the company use plastic-free packaging or stock ethical and sustainable brands? At Godshaws, all our packaging is recyclable and we’ll take back your boxes and bags if you no longer want them!

EXPERT ADVICE 69

We’re considering booking a videographer for our wedding, but we’re not sure what to look for. Do you have any tips you can share?

David Startin | Love Me Do Wedding Films

There are a huge number of videographers out there, all offering different styles and options. Firstly, I’d suggest you look at the deliverables and decide whether you’d like a full feature-length film that’s around one to two hours long or something a little shorter such as 10 to 20 minutes. This will help narrow down the number of videographers you’re considering, as not all offer both options. Then it comes down to the style you’re after. Do you want a more candid documentary-style film or something a little more staged and up-market? Many filmmakers out there create amazing cinematic-style pieces, pushing the creative side of what a wedding film could be. Music and sound design are so impactful in film, so consider whether the videographer has a particular style and whether that fits your tastes. I use a lot of acoustic and country-style, which works very well.

My wife-to-be and I want a cake that’s on-trend. What’s popular right now? Couples are always looking to make their cakes special and different for their big day, so the standard three-tiered white cakes aren’t as popular as they once were. I’ve had a lot of couples asking for deconstructed tiered cakes, so three or four single-tiers grouped together to make a wow factor display – this was made popular by Harry and Meghan. Many pairs are now looking for a showstopping sweet grazing-style display, which can be served as dessert and gives guests various flavour options

CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Adding flowers to cakes is still a huge trend. When displayed in a more natural and wild way, it creates the perfect look for those rustic country weddings. Pressed flowers are also trending and are great when combined with fresh and larger blooms.

Recommendations and reviews go a long way, so ask friends and family if they have any suggestions. If you were at a wedding and fell in love with the images, find out who took them. Search social media and have a look at online reviews. Is there perhaps a wedding chat group for your area or where you’re getting married? Once you have a few photographers in mind, check their availability on your desired date. Your photographer will be with you on one of the most important days of your lives and you’ll need to make sure you click – that’s why I love a pre-wedding shoot. Spending time with your photographer before the wedding will make you feel more relaxed about those photos on the day. Plus, you’ll get experience when posing for couple shots and won’t feel awkward on the day. Zoom calls or FaceTime is another great way to meet your wedding photographer. Even better, face-to-face over coffee and cake. Don’t be shy asking lots of questions. I love a good chat, plus you’ll feel confident in choosing someone open to being questioned about their work.

There are so many photographers out there, how do we choose the right one for us? Your wedding photos are a reminder and a keepsake of your wedding, so you must find the perfect photographer. Just because a friend or family member has a decent camera doesn’t mean they’ll capture memorable shots of your day. Wedding photography is a saturated market that can be overwhelming when it comes to choosing the right supplier, but it’s essential to find your desired style. Whether that’s a candid, classic, contemporary or creative style, try to see what look stands out to you. Once you’ve narrowed this down, the next step is setting a budget. There’s absolutely no point in finding a photographer you love, only to realise that they’re way out of your budget. The average wedding photographer costs between £1,500 to £2,000. Although this seems like a huge chunk of your wedding costs, don’t forget that this is an investment. Bear in mind that you get what you pay for.

73 PLANNING SOS

Local suppliers share tips and tricks to help couples create their dream day

Plan the

John says: On average, planning a wedding will start 18 months before the big day. One of the first things you must decide is what type of ceremony you want: a religious service in a place of worship, a civil ceremony or a bespoke celebrant-led ceremony. Once the date and venues have been confirmed, it’s a good idea to consult a toastmaster who can advise on wedding etiquette, tradition and timings. The supplier will have the management skills, tact and experience to ensure the success of any function. They’ll determine an outline plan as you want it to be, and you’ll receive full support in addressing any questions and dealing with any changes. The convention at weddings where the couple includes both bride and groom is for the groom to stand, be seated and photographed on his bride’s right; after all, he’s her right-hand man! The suggested seating arrangement at a civil ceremony follows a similar convention. Looking towards the registrar’s table, the groom’s family sits on the right. Although the couple will not sit for long, the groom takes the first seat in the front row. Next to him sits his best man, parents, witnesses and anyone giving a reading. The bride’s family is seated on the left; the first seat is reserved for her father, then mother and bridesmaids. Again, other seats are taken by witnesses and anyone giving a reading. As for the other guests, ‘choose a seat not a side’ or ‘we’re all one family when the knot is tied’ signs work great.

Sarah Colley | Baker www.bakerbrothersdiamonds.comBrothers

Rings are a physical embodiment of the vows you’re making to each other, so give yourself plenty of time to choose them well before the ceremony. Order the pieces six to eight weeks in advance. These can be ready quicker if the rings are available in-store, so always be sure to check.

John Ashmele | John Ashmele FGPT www.ashmele.co.uk

RING-A-DING-DING

RAISE A GLASS

74www.enekastewart.comwww.amymurphyphotography.co.uk

Sarah says: A wedding ring is an item you only buy once and wear forever; this is not a decision to be rushed.

Bespoke pieces will take longer to create, so allow yourself at least eight to ten weeks for the items to arrive. If you’re thinking of making the pieces personal with engravings, remember this will take longer. Always consider when ordering your jewellery the date of your final fittings. That way, you’ll get the full effect and can check everything works together. Once the big-ticket items are sorted, you can then focus on the additional pieces that will complete your look. How about bespoke pieces for the bridal party? Incorporating a bridesmaid’s birthstone is a simple way to make an item personal. Another popular gift at the moment is personalised cufflinks. While most commonly done for the groom, these are also being gifted to groomsmen. Chances are you’ll be setting time aside for some primping and preening, so why not give your engagement rings some tender loving care too? At Baker Brothers, we offer a free cleaning service for customers who purchase rings on-site and we encourage couples to pop in two weeks before the wedding. Afterwards, we suggest getting your rings checked and cleaned every three to five years, although this will vary depending on how you wear your rings.

75 PLANNING SOS

Gemma says: When planning your wedding entertainment, be sure to book a professional company. It can be easy to cut a corner regarding entertainment, but a true expert will have years of experience having spent time and money mastering their craft to give you a memorable performance.Whynotsurprise guests with a spectacular performance with The Bel Canto Singing Waiters? The performers will get the party started with their fantastic vocals and exciting energy. They start the day blending into the background, appearing to be waitressing staff while secretly waiting for their moment to shine with a personalised and tailored performance just for you. I got married a few years ago at the end of 2019, just before the pandemic hit. The best advice I could share with you is to be as prepared and organised as possible in the months, weeks and days leading up to your big day. That way, you can be more relaxed on the day, knowing everything has been taken care of. While waiting for my make-up artist to arrive, I sat on the bed in the bridal suite sipping a cold glass of bubbly when our florist arrived with my bouquet. Her words were, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen a bride as relaxed as you look!’ So don’t be afraid to delegate those last few jobs, ask for help when needed and slow down enough to enjoy every moment.

Family and friends are with you for most of the day, so keeping energy levels up is important to ensure everyone enjoys the wedding. Entertainment is essential, especially during the drinks reception when official photographs are being taken. Most guests are standing around with not much to do; that’s where I come in. Being able to look after your guests with my mix and mingle magic means you don’t have to worry about them. It’s super important to breathe, take everything in and enjoy every moment during the day. You have spent a long time planning the wedding together, but it will fly by quickly. You’ll be a little nervous but remember that everybody is there for you – nerves are good and show that you care. Realise you have support all around you like no other.

A CLASS ACT Steve says: I’m sure you've often needed to think about your guests when planning your wedding, from who to invite to the day and evening, where everyone will sit and who has a special role – the list goes on. Often, the most overlooked element is keeping guests entertained throughout the day.

Melissa x

It’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...

FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’

FACING FACTS

From Miss to Mrs

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all!

As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect.

As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess.Whenit comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

Hindsight is a marvellous thing

THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea!

Thank you for reading and good luck!

wedding is don’t lose any sleep over not inviting someone, chances are they probably weren’t going to invite you to their wedding anyway!

PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.

CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.

Melissa’s hubby-to-be opens a window into the wedding planning journey from the groom’s perspective

Hello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...

GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my somewhat.expectationsIfoundthatIfeltquiteguiltyaboutnotinvitingeveryoneI’veeverspokento,butyoudefinitelydoneedtodrawthelinesomewhere.Myadvicetoanyoneplanninga

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT

While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.

The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES

While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

Travel goals

Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some… 86

If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury.

Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

HONEYMOONS 87

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

TOUR GUIDE Walkers www.walkerstours.comTours

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

ART AND CULTURE

As the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

THE LANDINGS RESORT

Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand 88

The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. Go on, treat yourself!

EXCURSIONS

You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).
