Micklefield Hall provides manicured outdoor spaces ideal for photographs; from cloistered walkways to natures very own aisle, lined with herbaceous borders and leading up to the romantic temple which is nestled under the giant oak tree overlooking the pond. Rolling lawns, bluebell filled woodland, rose gardens, fountains and the garden room with open fireplace offer clients a wide variety of outdoor spaces all year round. The exterior of the barn is as sleek and well restored as the interior, with dark stained wooden cladding, manicured cherry trees and a French fountain courtyard, perfect for any drink’s reception. Sitting adjacent to the Georgian manor house, The Great Barn is an impressive structure approached by sandy coloured driveways and topiary Buxus plants. With a garden room complete with open fire, the outside spaces are as comfortable in the summer as they are in the winter. For al fresco nuptials, the romantic temple provides a dreamy place for any couple to tie the knot with up to 200 guests. The listed, award-winning The Great Barn can accommodate up to 200 people and boasts a large vaulted ceiling, chunky country
beams, beautiful oak floor and tall glass windows. This space always looks elegant and luxurious, and is easily converted between ceremony space, dining space and party space! The garden room located next to the French fountain area is also a popular space to get married with up to 80 guests. With a huge open fireplace, modern heaters and blankets to warm the guests, oak beams and pillars to frame your ceremony, this space is cosy, intimate and picturesque. Post-vows, couples can opt for the The Great Barn – experienced event managers ensure that there is a quick turnaround between the ceremony and reception – which has a fully serviced bar, luxurious toiletries in the bathrooms and air-conditioning. Drinks receptions can happen on the rolling lawns in front of the Georgian manor house with its Wisteria-covered façade, on the newly restored terrace outside the potting shed or in our heated and carpeted marquee with chandeliers and cream drapes. When choosing this venue, each couple is offered a free tasting evening with the venue’s exclusive catering partners, and each wedding at Micklefield is totally exclusive. 19
PENDLEY MANOR HOTEL 01442 891 891 | www.pendley-manor.co.uk Situated in the heart of idyllic Hertfordshire countryside, surrounded by 32 acres of natural beauty and home to a family of inquisitive Peacocks, Pendley Manor Hotel is unbelievably only 45 minutes from London. The entire Grade II listed property has been refurbished to combine modern facilities with the tradition it emulates. There is also a spa, swimming pool and leisure facilities, 24 hour room service, the Shakespeare Bar and Peacock Lounge – all contribute to a relaxing experience while staying here! The historic manor house now has 84 newly refurbished bedrooms and 10 exceptional meeting rooms all with plenty of natural daylight.
The traditional rooms in the manor house lend themselves style and character for vows which can be taken in the Verney, Oak Room, Simon Suite or Harcourt Ballroom; the latter has a capacity for 200 guests. Receptions can take place in either the Harcourt Ballroom or Simon Suite, while the Peacock Lounge is the ideal space for a drinks reception. When tying the knot here, couples should bare in mind the beautiful staircase for photos and that you can have a marquee on the lawns for up to 500. What’s more, couples can stay in a special room on the night of the wedding.
ROWLEY BARN 07914 674 649 | www.rowleybarn.com Rowley Barn is an award-winning 17th-century Grade II listed building, which has been sympathetically restored and refurbished to create a modern conversion with plenty of natural light yet maintains many of the original oak beams. Based in rural Hertfordshire with nearby transport links, Rowley Barn has adjoining landscaped gardens offering space for the addition of a marquee. 20
The barn itself is a large, open-plan space with a mezzanine level and adjoining link room, and offers the perfect blend of stunning location coupled with the highest standards of friendly professionalism and bespoke luxury. From an intimate gathering of close family and friends to a party of up to 180 guests, Rowley Barn is the perfect backdrop for both the ceremony and the reception afterwards.

arriet and Lee met in a bar in Ampthill when they’d gone out with friends who happened to know each other. “We started chatting and over nine months became such good friends, which later blossomed into a relationship and we became inseparable,” recalls Harriet. On Lee’s 21st birthday, the couple realised how much they felt for one another, “We went to Bournemouth to celebrate with friends. The next day we all went to the beach as it was roasting hot. We went off on our own for a walk, and stood at the end for the pier just talking. Here we both realised we loved each other.” Fast-forward to the proposal, which was unexpected for Harriet especially when and where it happened. “We were sat watching Love Island in our PJs and Lee was being really nervous. We went up to bed and when I sat on the end Lee got down on one knee! I had always wanted a personal proposal at home, so this was perfect!” she adds. The big date was set 14th September 2019, with the Church of All Saints, Houghton Conquest and Wrest Park, Silsoe setting the scene. Here, Harriet tells us more about their day...

Holly and Paul were desperate to get married so tied the knot with a socially distanced wedding in July and decided the theme of the day was ‘Anything goes!’ Images courtesy of 3A Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
T
he fact that this cute couple had the song Never Been Loved Like This Before as one of their First Dance songs highlight this true, classic romance of finding your soul mate. “Paul is, hands down, the kindest and most hard working man I have ever met (apart from my daddy!),” shares Holly. “We have the same sense of humour. We were friends before we became a couple because I never dreamed he saw me as anything more. “We were walking on a secluded beach when we had our first kiss. It was beautiful because we had waited so long for it! I felt like a film star and Paul was my hero. As he wrapped his arms around me, I never wanted him to let go. I thought, ‘You are the man I have been looking for my whole life, you are the one’.” Clearly, love blossomed for these two, leading to the perfect proposal. “Paul proposed to me in Telford at the British Veterinary Nursing Association Conference 2019 – in the very room where we had first met! “I was dressed in casual clothes as it was the last day of conference, Paul looked lovely in a suit but he always looks dapper when he is attending meetings – which he was that day. He took me into the conference room, I had no idea, I said, ‘Why are we here?’. “He started saying some lovely things about how much he enjoyed dating me. I tried to shut him up as we had had a similar conversation the night before. Paul then told me he was hopelessly in love with me, got down on one knee, pulled a ring out of his pocket, and said, ‘Holly, will you do the honour of marrying me?’ – I cried and kissed him and managed to blub yes somewhere along the line! “Apparently, Paul, not only had had the ring in his pocket all morning, he had it in the car the week before when we travelled 250 miles visiting another conference. Paul had already called my dad to ask for my hand in marriage. It was so romantic.” The big date was set, Saturday 18th July, 2020, with Christ Church, Ware, Hertfordshire setting the scene of their unqiue, romantic, socially distanced day...
PLANNING THE DAY When Covid-19 happened, Holly and Paul’s original wedding plans for 2nd May had to be postponed. When restrictions lifted, they decided they just wanted to be able to get married in a church with at least our immediate family and a few guests. “We didn’t want to wait until next year. so we had to halve the guest list and adhered to the restrictions such as putting out rings in isolation!” shares Holly. Having been worshipping at Christ Church in Ware, Hertfordshire for about a year it was an obvious venue choice for Holly. “It’s such a stunning building with a lovely atmosphere and the Vicar and congregation are so kind and welcoming.” For the flowers, Holly opted for paper blooms made from the pages of an old copy of Jane Eyre reflecting her love of writing and books. All of the buttonholes were paper too, the father-of-the-bride’s was that of Winnie The Pooh reminiscent of bedtime stories he used to read to her; while Paul and his friends had buttonholes made of paper with a farming theme due to him being a farmer and vet, Holly’s mum’s was made out of crossword squares and the motherof-the-groom’s was a paper buttonhole made of an old 37
music score as she was a music teacher. Keeping in theme with the complete personalisation of the day, the cake topper was models of the happy couple in their wedding attire complete with sheep, “Everyone loved it. The detail was amazing, the groom even had a replica tartan kilt!” A gorgeous classic VW Beetle called Billy took the bride and her father to the church, and the the newlyweds to their post-vow photoshoot. “I also hired a lovely Classic VW Campervan for the bridesmaids,” shares Holly. “I love the 1960s set television show Heartbeat and the cars were a nod to that. Also, Paul and his family spent many holidays in a Campervan, so that was for them too.”
LOOKING THE PART “I wore a gorgeous gown from Oliver’s Bridal in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire” shares Holly. “I wanted an amalgamation of styles and as soon as I saw this dress, I knew it fitted the bill. The dress had Spanish and Medieval elements to it: Spanish-style material and fishtail skirt, while the train, full skirt and corset style were Medieval elements. However, it also looked a little bit vintage in terms of colour, with a Grecian style overlay which was peachy in colour and really made it stand out – I had never seen anything like it before. The belt gave it a 1920s style and there was something about it that looked like it was from World War Two, too. I am a bit of a retro girl at heart and it ticket all the boxes.” “Paul looked very handsome in his outfit which included a kilt made from the Crawford Clan material,” adds Holly. “He also wore a sheep waistcoat, as he owns sheep and is a vet.” Holly’s bridesmaids wore gorgeous pink Grecian-style gowns from Debenhams in a colour that matched the tones of the bride’s wedding dress and complemented its Grecian elements.
THE DAY ARRIVED “I was in an almost dream-like state on our wedding day,” recalls Holly. “I had tried not to get too excited beforehand until the day had actually dawned, just in case we had to postpone again! “I was very emotional because my parents and I are very close and it was a big day we had dreamed of for so long, but it also felt like the end of an era. I always wanted my parents to see me get married and the day had actually arrived! My mum looked beautiful and my dad very handsome. They were finally attending their daughter’s wedding! It was amazing.” “When I looked in the mirror, it didn’t look like me. I felt beautiful – like I had just stepped out of a bridal magazine! I kept thinking, ‘I am going to wake up in a minute, aren’t I?’. I couldn't wait to get to the church and for Paul to marry me! “When I saw Paul waiting for me in church, he took my breath away. Walking towards him, with my dad by my side walking me down the aisle and my mum and mother-in-law looking on, was the stuff of dreams.” Although the couple couldn’t have a reception that certainly made sure they could make the most of everything they could do! “We did cut our wedding cake from the boot of the groom’s car and had our first dance in a car park,” recalls Holly. “It was to a mix-tape of Brian Adam’s Everything I do and Rock Me Gently by Andy Kim. “Driving down the high street after the wedding in our open top car, waving as passers-by! I felt like a princess with my prince! “One of our guests said, and I quote, “It was the best wedding ever and just goes to show all you need is love, and a bit of imagination!' 38

LOVE WINS Holly and Paul adapted to restrictions to have the perfect day here’s how... ❤ The wedding service was socially distanced and I was worried it would look odd or have a strange atmosphere. But I can honestly say it did not impact on the service. It was intimate and s pecial and so lovely to share with our nearest and dearest. ❤ We also had to scrap the hotel reception and have our first dance in a car park, where we cut the cake from the boot of the groom’s car, but I can honestly say it was a stunning day. ❤ Our photographer/videographer Antony ensured our photos and video were available just hours after the service. This was so important to us, as so many people could not attend due to restrictions, but they could still see the service on the day, which was amazing. Many people who watched online said they felt like they were there! ❤ We were also grateful to staff at Woodhall Estate who enabled us to have photos in their grounds – and the photos are stunning, so thanks to them! ❤ The Christ Church band allowed us to use prerecorded songs during the service and Paul recorded my Mother-In-Law, Monica Crawford played the organ in Second Presbyterian Church, Islandmagee (where Paul and his family come from) while a friend (Roberta McMaster) sang the Aaronic Blessing (sung at Presbyterian weddings, thus they bought a bit of their home church to our wedding. ❤ Because we could not have many guests, our friends and neighbours gathered outside our house (socially distanced) to wave us off. They clapped as dad and I came out of the house. I was speechless at their kindness and the fact they had made the effort to do that. When we got to the church, more of my friends (including my former English teacher) were waiting outside to greet us. I felt like Royalty as I waved to them! It is at times like this that you see how kind and generous people can be.

fter a while of being with Aline, I realised I wanted to do this for ever and hated the thought of being without her,” shares Michael. He set about planning the proposal! “Aline had to go back to Brazil to finish her PhD for a few months before coming back to the UK to live permanently. I’d wanted to do it before she left, I’d booked a trip to Venice (where Aline had always wanted to go) as a birthday present and planned to pop the question in some sickeningly romantic location. However, we had to cancel the trip for financial reasons and I didn’t have a ring... “Fast forward a few months and I was in Brazil with Aline and her family over the 2016 Christmas holidays. I thought that while I was there I should do the honourable thing and ask her dad, as I probably wouldn’t see him again for a while. Luckily, I got his blessing while everyone else was out on one of the days. For New Year we went to Ilha Grande which is a beautiful tropical island with no roads, just down the coast from Rio. The island was special for us as we’d spent many long weekends there whilst living in Rio, it was where I’d first told Aline that I loved her. I decided that I didn’t want to leave the island without proposing, but could never seem to find the right moment and I still didn’t have a ring (I was also a little worse for wear on New Year’s Eve). We ended up extending our stay on the island by a few days but I still was no closer to achieving my goal but just had to do it. “On the day we were due to leave, I suggested a quick look around the shops near the beach to pick up some mementos, like maybe some jewellery. Aline seemed to like earrings, but cool as you like, I asked if she liked any of thing rings... Aline picked one out. So just before we picked up our bags from the guesthouse, I finally popped the question on the beach. At first Aline was a bit confused and was like ‘yeah I’m sure we’ll get married someday’. I had to say ‘No, no will you marry me?’ While waving the ring in front of her face. Aline twigged and said yes of course and started crying. She says it was completely unexpected.” “I was not expecting it at all.” she confirms. “Mike proposed to me in one our favourite places in Brazil. I always thought he was the type of guy that would take years and years to propose. It was wonderful moment and I couldn’t believe it! The big date was set for the 5th May 2019, Bassmead Manor Barns was the perfect backdrop to the day where the aim was: “For everyone to have fun but also eat some really good food. We wanted it to be the sort of wedding we’d to go to as guests,” share the couple! Here, Aline tells us more
43
Bassmead wasn’t the first venue we visited but was definitely the last. It has a beautiful setting and great food, conveniently not too far from where we live.
As I couldn’t decide on a colour theme for the wedding, I decided to have all of them together. The local florist (Stephanie Rose) prepared a mix of seasonal flowers in a delicate shade.
Bem casados are a traditional Brazilian treat. According to the tradition, you have to offer each guest a bem casado so they can each be blessed with that same luck and happiness. Some say that guests can make a wish before taking the first bite. They are two pieces of light sponge cake brought together with a silky condensed milk filling (doce de leite) which represents two parts united by sweet love, support and mutual respect. We broke with the norm and went chocolate cake – it looked and taste fantastic, everyone said so!
The centrepieces were decorated jam jars using the same fabric and twine from the invites and place names. I love rustic style! 44
The table names were place important to us, and the settings were made from fabric and twine.
REAL WEDDINGS
From the venue’s tasting event, we chose props including festoon lights, a big Mr & Mrs sign on the dancefloor and fairylights lights on the bridge.
As my bridesmaids were all coming from Brazil we couldn’t have a dress shopping day together. So I didn’t want to make them wear the same dress. Also some things look good on some people and not on others. I just decide to ask them to wear a long dress in the same colour, blush pink.
My dress had an open back, lots of tiny sparkly beads and was a fitted and shapely style. It was very comfortable, definitely not one of those tight ones where you cannot even eat a grape (I was planning to eat a lot!). I used real flowers in my hair and accessorised with small earrings as the dress was the star of the show.
Michael wore navy blue three-piece suit with salmon-pink tie.
We had Cara Beard perform selected songs during the ceremony, which was beautiful. Then she also did an hour or so during the drinks reception and canapés.
We were both excited and overjoyed... the day flew past. 45
OJ’s soul band performed in the evening, we thought soul and funk creates a great party atmosphere and the additional brass performers added another exciting dimension, especially when they mingled on the dancefloor.
Memorable moments were the beautiful speeches – my sister’s speech went down better than mine which will forever irk me – the food and the dancing. The food was absolutely incredible. After our wedding a friend of mine decide to pick the same catering company for her wedding Galloping Gourmet.

O
n a balmy evening in July, a small number of wedding creatives from the Herts and Beds area embarked on an inspirational styled shoot in the beautiful Hitchin Lavender fields, coordinated by Victoria Mitchell of Victoria Mitchell Photography. “With COVID-19 having changed the way we conduct our weddings, albeit short term at the very least, it was important to portray a new, but equally as charming, outdoor wedding space,” shares Victoria. “Rachel Sokhal Bridal Accessories wanted a striking outdoor setting to launch her new capsule pearl accessory collection Serenity. The new collection was designed and created to offer Rachel’s brides the timeless, classic pieces that she’s renowned for, but with added modernity. Pearls have long been adored at weddings and they will always be an elegant choice that you can wear long after the big day and keep as heirlooms. We are so blessed in Herts and Beds with so many stunning venues and outdoor spaces, I just wanted a space that enhanced the purity and beauty of the pearls and Hitchin Lavender sprung to mind – as you can see from the images, I wasn’t disappointed! “For the model’s hair Kim Sandford created two looks, one emphasised the beauty of loose waves and the other rocked a modern ponytail. Her expertise and understanding of what style to design for a shoot makes everything come together effortlessly.” And finally, Kirsty from The Flower Mill adds, “I wanted to create a bouquet that complemented the pearl accessories and took inspiration from the surroundings. Using mostly British-grown seasonal flowers, the palette consisted of pearl-toned David Austin roses, dancing cloud alliums, succulents and plenty of foliage for a timeless romantic-style. The look was topped off with elegant trailing silk ribbons in lavender and white, with textures enhancing the sleeve material on the bridal gown.”

ere at Your Herts and Beds Wedding HQ, we’re in love with this fun and stylish shoot which showcases ways to achieve the perfect intimate wedding. Furtho Manor Farm provided the ideal outdoor space and backdrop to wedding photos with a beautiful pond and wooded areas. The inspiration behind the dreamy look was based on the changing situation due to COVID-19. The suppliers wanted to show how they can adapt and still create a stunning day full of detail and personal touches. Shoot organiser Sarah Reeves-Hart from Samsa May's says, “We wanted to demonstrate what could be created for a late summer wedding. It was important to show that regardless of the restrictions, a wedding is about the love of two people who want to spend the rest of their lives together.” Now it’s time to relax and enjoy some wedding inspiration! 53

TO THE DRESS! Hot bridal trends for 2021
Sarah Sutton | Bridal consultant at
www.watters.com
www.watters.com
Oliver’s Bridal & Formalwear Sarah says: “It’s been a heartbreaking year for would-be brides, but we’re hopeful they’ll have everything to look forward to in 2021. A fixed date, all the friends and family they want around them on the long-awaited biggest day of their life and most importantly of all, the dream dress. “We predict that brides who have their (bejewelled) finger on the fashion pulse will resign the traditional pouffy Cinderella dresses of fairytales in favour of lighter, more relaxed and less ‘fussy’ silhouettes. Our pick of Stella York’s stunning collection and upcoming spring collection focuses on figure-flattering sheer lace, sumptuous satin, low scoop backs, sexy slits and sleek tailoring. “We’re head-over-heels in love with style, 7083. A plunging petal-strewn sheer bodice, this dreamy dress cinches in at the waist giving way to swathes of delicate tulle – divine! For brides who prefer a more simpler style, 7099 is a figure-hugging mikado fit and flare gown featuring a straight neckline. It’s been in our boutique for less than a week and every bride through the door has asked to try it on. “The friendly team at Oliver’s Bridal can’t wait to introduce brides-to-be to Stella York’s latest collection. Your dream dress awaits.” Check out www.oliversbridalandformalwear.co.uk
Sam says: “In light of the pandemic, it’s likely that weddings will remain small and intimate affairs with pared back dresses to reflect the situation. But simple doesn’t mean boring. “The adage that less is more is never truer but with a twist. Lenox by Willowby fits this bill with a classic crepe gown edged in bling. “When normality returns and the weddings we know and love resume, then gowns will range from classic mikado ballgowns (with pockets) to squared-off necklines with oodles of floaty tulle. The deep plunging V-neck seems to be a statement trend set to stay and the use of floral appliqués is a constant that keeps returning. “Heritage Brides tends to cater for brides who don’t want to follow tradition, but would rather make their own style statement. We are the flagship boutique for Willowby and Wtoo by Watters. Brides receive one to one attention during a once in a lifetime experience at Hatfield House.” Check out www.heritagebrides.co.uk 60

Amy says: “In 2021, we see two bridal ‘lanes’ emerging, which will suit What Alice Wore’s fashion-focussed brides down to the ground. Our most sought-after wedding gowns will deliver on trends we call ‘Modern Simplicity’ or ‘Luxxxe’. “Our Modern Simplicity collections will feature striking silhouettes and perfect cuts, tailored in plain ivory crepes or satins. The drama will come in the pairing of sleek dress styles with cathedral-length veils in pearl, appliqué or crystal designs. “Our Luxxxe options showcase 3D appliqués, intricate beading, shoulder tulles and unexpected details such as a daringly low back, extravagant train or champagne and blush tones. “But, irrespective of style, all gowns will have to be party-ready; easy to dance, move, eat and celebrate in, light as a feather with a hint of comfortable structure. We’re proud to say that our carefully curated designers including Riki Dalal Liri Bridal, Cizzy Bridal, Zavana Bridal and White April, all have this wonderful eye for bridal detail and comfort, with gowns from just £1,000 to £2,100.” Check out www.whataliceworebridal.com

Sarah says, “In 2021, boho inspired-styles with 3D flowers, intricate and chunky lace details have been favoured from our designers Ronald Joyce and Morilee in the spring 2021 collections. Morilee, one of the leading bridal brands, is bringing a stunning new collection out, The Other White Dress designed by Madeline Gardner. The collection is simplistic, sleek and features modern designs that can be dressed up for city hotel weddings or kept simple for an outdoor garden party style celebration. Small and intimate weddings are going to become more popular, so having bridal trends that are versatile to all styles is great. We will be stocking the above trends in our beautiful bridal barn in the coming months.” Check out www.ivoryandlace-bridal.co.uk
Melanie Rich | Owner Enchanted Bridal Boutique Melanie says: “Bridal trends are like seasons, but I’m finding that the majority of my brides are wanting the uncomplicated design of classic, timeless dresses which to me is perfect and makes total sense right now, especially for mini weddings, socially distanced dos and after ceremony celebrations. “When I think of romance, I think of princess tulle ballgowns but I’m getting that out of my head for 2021. Intimate weddings are the way forward, I’m not saying fairytale weddings will be a thing of the past, but I think weddings will now be planned with more care to the environment and pocket. “Classic dresses are romantic and flattering and absolutely the way to go right now. Delicate sheen works well for any bride, with captivating contours and subtle detail like embellishment, detailed waistlines, delicate necklines and breathtaking trains, this all merges into pure sophisticated glamour. “Bridal fashion right now reflects the times, 2021 will be an amazing year for weddings, there will be so much to celebrate for everyone. “Our collection of stunning Mikado bridal gowns are available in multiple shapes from ballgowns to fishtail dresses with a fabulous collection of accessories to complement each dress.” Check out www.enchantedbridalboutique.co.uk 63

R+Co Waterfall Moisture + Shine Lotion £25, www.beautyrebel.store/rco
Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com
“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews
“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey
Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker
GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve 76

Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson

BRIDAL BEAUTY
What’s the difference between bronzer and contour, what products are the best to use? It’s easy to get confused, but bronzer is for adding warmth and a glow to the skin. Dust it anywhere you naturally catch the sun like your forehead, nose and cheekbones. I find matte powder bronzers are best at giving the most natural finish. I love the new Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Bronzer and Bobbi Brown products are always a must in my kit! Contouring is used to create depth and give shape to the face, generally making certain areas look slimmer, such as the nose, jawline and forehead. Creambased products are best for dry skin or those skilled in blending, I love the Younique and Bobbi Brown foundation sticks for this as they come in so many shades! If you’re a novice, use a powder palette like the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow, it’s easy to apply so you can’t really go wrong – the key is to blend lots and not apply too much product at once! ACCESSORISE AND SHINE
I’m trying to find the perfect pieces to finish off my wedding look, what style jewellery is currently on trend? The key trends in bridal jewellery at the moment are princess-style, maximalist pieces and stacking jewellery. The contemporary bride seems to be enjoying a return to sparkle and layering up their accessories for a luxe look. When it comes to colour, natural tones are very popular and this includes peach, pale pink, watery blues and greens that draw inspiration from nature, are ideal for any style of ceremony. Green in particular is having a real moment in the spotlight with emerald, jade, tourmaline and green sapphires making stunning coloured bridal jewellery particularly when paired with white diamonds. Stacking jewellery is a key look for bridal jewellery at the moment be it stacking rings, bracelets or pendants. The key is to the get the balance right between the embellishments on your dress and your jewels. There are numerous tutorials on YouTube that can guide you on how to artistically stack up jewellery for a beautiful bridal look. My top tips for bridal jewellery are: ❤ Match the tone of the metal to the colours in your dress. White fabrics look stunning with silver and platinum. Warm ivory looks stunning with yellow gold or natural white gold. Champagne-coloured dresses work beautifully with rose gold. ❤ Choose one statement piece as the focus for your jewellery on your big day be it a necklace, statement earrings or bracelet. ❤ If you find the assortment of jewellery on offer bewildering, you can’t go wrong with timeless, elegant, classical designs such as a pearl necklace or diamond earrings. Go for quality as this jewellery can make wonderful heirloom pieces to hand down the family. Jodie Gearing | Jodie Gearing Bespoke Jewellery Design | www.jodiegearing.com 77
THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress
n w o g F
ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.
78
What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an
FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!
It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.
What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.
Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.
Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.
Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw
her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

SHOW OF AFFECTION What points in the day are ideal for live music? If I had my way, all music at a wedding would be live! But bias aside, there are some moments during a wedding where live music is just irreplaceable. When the bride makes her entrance at the ceremony and the groom sees her for the first time, a live performance of a romantic and poignant song that means something to the couple transforms that moment into something so special. Equally, live music for the first dance is a must-have! Every couple has ‘their’ song, and having a one-off live version can makes it truly theirs! What’s the best way to cover my spots without my make-up looking cakey? It’s all about prep when it comes to concealing blemishes. Even though we want to conceal and hide spots it’s important to not draw attention to the area, which can happen if the skin around the blemishes is dehydrated or flaky. Firstly, make sure your skin has been exfoliated with a gentle exfoliator. I highly recommend Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant all over the skin. It’s super soft on the skin whilst also providing anti-inflammatory benefits to help reduce the size of breakouts. Secondly, moisture the area with a light gel-based cream. My personal favourite is Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator.. This will leave the skin smooth and hydrated, but without leaving a greasy residue on the surface. Then using a technique of layering, I build up layers of medium to full coverage with foundation, I recommend Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Foundation, dabbing gently over the blemishes with a buffing brush. This will then create a smooth finish, whilst also neutralising any pink or red angry tones of the skin. Once you have built up your desired coverage, set your make-up to stop it from moving or being sticky with a smooth finishing powder and then spray with a spritz of setting spray. FLOWER POWER
How can we incorporate flowers into our wedding? Your wedding flowers should never be seen as a finishing touch or left to the last minute to organise. They can create the foundations to the overall look and feel of your wedding day, transforming any venue by adding drama, fragrance, texture and injecting colour. Florals can be incorporated in every aspect of your wedding day, starting with delicate hair accessories to one of the biggest highlights – your bouquet. Not forgetting the bridal party buttonholes, corsages and bridesmaid bouquets. Then it’s onto the ceremony area where you can have wedding signs incorporating
flowers welcoming your guests, fresh flowers down the aisle and add that wow factor with a floral backdrop. Get guests talking over your flower centrepieces and add a dramatic touch by dancing to your first song as a married couple under a floral chandelier. Above are just a few suggestions of how to include flowers into your wedding day, but know there are endless options. However you decide to use flowers on your day, be sure to keep the overall look and feel of the wedding in mind to ensure everything flows seamlessly throughout. FLORAL FANTASY
We’re having a winter wedding, what florals are perfect for this time of year? Winter weddings were all about warm reds, burgundies and creams and it has become very popular to have a hand-tied bouquet either with satinbound stems or with a trailing ribbon. Ivory avalanche roses, lisianthus and hydrangeas work well with Naomi red roses and trailing amaranthus. Often, we would design table arrangements to complement them using the same flowers and overall style to guide us, whether it be fishbowls, martini glasses or a rustic wood slice. Going with a cooler colour scheme and working with whites, frosty silvers and hues of blue are perfect. Snowflake spray roses and Christmas rose Helleborus contrast nicely with the spiky texture of the blue thistlelike Eryngium. This would lend itself well to a wild hand-tied bouquet or a traditional shower bouquet. Looking at those of us who like a winter pink, add some blush to your bouquet to complement the whites and silvers. Emma Tuohy | Adrienne’s Flowers www.adriennesflowers.co.uk

WINTER TRAVEL
With travel rules and regulations constantly changing, newlyweds and nearlyweds will be looking to the UK to celebrate post-vows, and minimooners will be spoilt for choice when sticking to destinations closer to home; here’s two to whet your appetite: Situated deep in the Scottish Highlands, 57 Nord occupies a dramatic position between three ancient sea lochs surrounded by the majestic Kintail Mountains. With floor to ceiling windows that frame the panoramic views stays here are largely elemental, particularly in the autumn and winter months when the weather is ever more startling. Cosy up by the fire and watch the weather roll in with a dram of specially selected whiskey from the honesty bar and tuck into the hamper of artisan goodies. There are ample wet weather activities for epicureans: from the neighbourhood Fairy Tale Distillery to the internationally acclaimed Talisker; fine dining at Kinloch Lodge or fresh crayfish cooked at home from Duncan, the neighbourhood fisherman. At night watch the famous Eilean Donan castle light up from the cottage and spend the evening on a tour of the night’s sky with the help of the in-house guide – how romantic!
