Love is all around
ello lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding. I hope you’ve started 2022 off with a bang and have already achieved any New Year’s resolutions. For me personally, my goals are to make quality time for loved ones while ensuring I leave enough time for myself – it’s all about finding the perfect balance. This year will be one of the most exciting wedding seasons so far, with many couples tying the knot, including my close friend who has given me the honour of being a bridesmaid at her wedding – how exciting! The countdown is certainly on, and July couldn’t come around quicker. If you’re at the start of your planning journey, then you’ve come to the right place because we cover everything from fashion and beauty advice, wedding cakes, venues and more. Suppliers have been working hard all around the regions to help couples create their dream day. My advice for all nearlyweds would be to start wedding planning early to avoid any disappointment. Book your favourite suppliers first because there’s nothing worse than finding out your dream companies are fully booked. If you’re towards the end of your planning journey, we have the perfect features to help you add the finishing touches and help solve any last minute worries or problems.

FINISHING TOUCHES At Your Herts and Beds Wedding, we were intrigued by this wood-burning stove featured in our December/January issue. The piece would work perfectly at any rustic or outdoor wedding and is such a fun alternative to firepits. We got in touch with Nicola Adam’s at Morley Stove Company Ltd to learn more about the company and what they offer. Located in Ware, the family-run business first started in the ‘70s. Fast forward to now, the team is excited to announce that they’re the new official retailer of the beautiful cooker branch Lacanche, with some items now on display in the company’s showroom. The team also offers The Big Green Egg Inc. products, DeliVita Ltd Wood-Fired Pizza Ovens, and the Corten Corten Steel RB73 Outdoor Stove. These items are very popular for wedding gifts as families tend to chip in for high-quality items that will last decades. Check out: www.morley-stoves.co.uk Check out: www.morley-stoves.co.uk

EDITOR LOVES This issue is packed full of beautiful inspiration for all types of weddings, from venue styling, catering inspiration, showstopping cakes, picture-perfect images and more. I love reading all about local weddings to discover how the couples met, when they popped the question and all about their big day. Sophie and Andrew’s wedding at the Old Palace in Hatfield Park was stunning and featured a neutral colour palette and plenty of foliage. The bride’s dress by Essense of Australia really stood out to me; I love the intricate detailing and off-the-shoulder style. Sophie says, “I thought I would go for a mermaid-style dress, but the gowns didn’t give me the feeling I expected to have once I tried them on.” She adds, “Against the odds, I tried on a huge sparkly dress and instantly knew it was the gown I wanted – nothing else seemed to compete.” The bride didn’t want to take any attention away from the dress and opted for some dainty drop earrings from Swarovski. Read all about Sophie and Andrew’s special day and view more showstopping images on page 33.

THE RHYTHM OF LOVE A wedding is full of beautiful moments to treasure, but why not enhance the experience even more with the addition of live music? With the amazing ability to bring people together, music can create an emotional atmosphere while capturing the crowd and highlighting those special moments. Situated in Hertfordshire, live singer Sammie Hicks works with couples to help create their dream wedding. Sammie started singing professionally 10 years ago and first found her passion for music aged 11. She says, “I began taking singing lessons where my love for singing grew, and it’s how I’ve always coped with emotions and difficult times.” The company can perform during ceremonies, throughout drinks receptions to keep guests entertained and for first dances. Sammie comments, “My favourite part of the job is seeing people smile and how their faces light up when I play a certain song. It makes me so happy when I see people enjoying the music, singing along and dancing away.” Sammie Hicks is currently offering 10 per cent off all new wedding bookings when couples quote Your Herts and Beds Wedding before March 31st 2022. Designed by luxury interior guru Martin Hulbert, the Cedar Suite offers a 180-degree view over the stunning formal gardens and features a private entrance and three spacious meeting rooms. This suite has been named after the 200-year-old trees on the grounds and can accommodate 160 loved ones. Alternatively, say “I do” in The Potting Shed, located in the stunning Victorian Walled Garden for 50 to 70 people. Lovebirds can add a marquee if they want some extra space. Lastly, the Garden room is a great option for 120 people, whilst the Sunken Garden is great for al fresco weddings with 250 loved ones. In the evening, receptions occur in either the Amber Foyer for 450 people, Cedar Foyer with 160 or the Ivory Foyer with 120. When couples book one of the venue’s wedding packages, they get to participate in a tasting session to sample the menu. They will also be offered a night stay on their wedding day in the Mansion Room.

HISTORIC VENUES
WARE PRIORY 01920 460 316 | www.warepriory.co.uk Situated in seven acres of picturesque gardens, Ware Priory is a beautiful, traditional Grade I listed building with contemporary touches and architecture dating back to Medieval times. The main building is stunning, with a whitewashed frontage and a stonewalled exterior surrounded by flower beds and distinctive windows. Multiple spaces at the property provide the perfect settings for weddings. The team restored The Priory Hall in the 1990s, where Medieval graffiti was uncovered and Victorian murals restored. This area can accommodate 100 guests for the “I dos”, 80 for wedding breakfasts and 100 for evening receptions. Or why not exchange vows in The Conservatory, which has a bright and spacious interior with easy access to the riverside gardens for 100 people? The space can accommodate wedding breakfasts for 120 guests and receptions for 150. Another option is The Hadsley Room, which can host 40 guests and boasts a crown-post roof and vaulted ceiling? After the ceremony, the staff can transform the space for wedding breakfasts with 30 people and evening receptions with 40. The large refectory table

in this room dates back to the 14th-century and is believed to be from the original Friary. The Fletcher’s Lea is a modern addition to the estate and features a decking area, which overlooks the beautiful River Lea. Guests can make a memorable and dramatic entrance thanks to the narrowboat provided. The space can host up to 200 guests for ceremonies, 160 for wedding breakfasts and 200 for evening celebrations. The standalone building includes all catering and bar facilities, allowing couples to have exclusive use of the space on the special day. The Riverside Suite is perfect for larger weddings and can host wedding receptions with 160 guests for formal dining and 220 for buffet-style meals. A space that stands out at the venue is The Island, which is located in the middle of the river and provides the ideal space for musical events. Guests can access this space by two small bridges that cross an inlet of water that was once used to bring supplies to the monks. The venue’s currently running a special offer for couples who book the venue for their wedding. Lovebirds will receive accommodation on the wedding night at Hanbury Manor, a £100 discount with Ware Priory’s dressing partner Victoria’s Events and complimentary bacon rolls for the evening buffet.

With 700 years of fascinating history, there’s a sense of royal heritage at the heart of Ashridge House. Located in Hertfordshire, Gaddesden Estate is an outdoor venue that offers exclusive access to the grounds around the Golden Parsonage. The venue opened the gardens for weddings in 2020, and guests can explore the fields, woodlands, water meadows and farm tracks.

All you need is love

REAL WEDDING
D
avid and Marie-Anthea first met online and decided to meet in person on London Bridge – the perfect location for a north and south Londoner to come together. Marie-Anthea says, “Dave almost cancelled because the Northern Line was down, but thankfully he persevered.” She adds, “We realised we shared a lot in common, including a love for the gym, ballet, good steak, red wine and goodquality peanut butter.” Early in their relationship, the couple had realised that they’d found the one. Marie-Anthea comments, “Dave offered to come to my office at lunchtime on a Monday to bring me a brownie because I was hungover, and that’s when I realised he was a keeper.” David proposed on the couple’s second anniversary, which was a complete surprise for Marie-Anthea. He says, “We were having a drink in the bar at The Ivy Market Grill in Covent Garden at the time, and I led into the proposal with a picture book I’d created. Inside, the images told our love story and the tale of our first two years together.” Marie-Anthea was in tears at the lovely gesture and ignored the small envelope, which had the ring inside that David had designed. After opening the envelope, she was completely shocked and, of course, said yes!
SETTING THE SCENE With the number of beautiful venues around Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, picking a wedding venue can be difficult. David and Marie-Anthea searched around to find a location to match their rusticstyled wedding and came across South Farm in Royston. Surrounded by expansive gardens, the venue is a family-run property nestled in 20 acres of beautiful countryside. The bride says, “South Farm is the most beautiful venue, which provides a relaxed and unpretentious setting. The team’s sustainable ethos appealed to us, as they grow lots of produce on-site, and the accommodation, summer house and grounds were also a real selling point!” The couple wanted a relaxed wedding surrounded by friends and family – this became even more important as the day took place shortly after Covid-19 restrictions lifted. The lovebirds opted for rustic stationery to keep their theme consistent throughout the day and had an order-of-the-day design on an old pallet. The centrepieces consisted of rustic milk jars, faux flowers, wooden table names and gold photo frames with images of the couple. At each setting was a laser-cut place name to help guests find their seats, which doubled up as favours. The bride’s bouquet, designed by Verdila Flowers, looked beautiful on the day and included roses and lilies. She says, “We only confirmed the wedding was going ahead a couple of weeks before the big day, and the florist was so was brilliant at accommodating us!” The pair were very fortunate to have some flowers created by Honeysuckle Flowers left from a previous wedding, making the ceremony area even more beautiful.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT For the wedding breakfast, the venue served a three-course meal with salmon cheesecake for starter, a rump of lamb for main and a chocolate delice for dessert. The couple had a hog roast in the evening to keep anyone from going hungry. Guests loved the three-tiered cheese board with assorted crackers, grapes and chutney on the side. The bride says, “We’re really passionate about cheese like most people and used different types from a local company.” She adds. “We assembled and decorated it ourselves with burlap ribbon, edible white roses and a custom made cake topper – we loved the results!”
27
LOOKING THE PART Every bride wants to look extra special on their wedding day, and finding that dream dress is the foundation of every bridal look. Marie-Anthea found an off-the-rack dress, which fitted perfectly and needed hardly any alterations. She accessorised her look with nude high heels, a hairpin, pearl earrings and a pearl necklace that featured their daughter’s initials. The groom looked dapper in a navy suit with a floral shirt, a pink tie and pocket square, which matched the couple’s light pink and navy blue colour scheme. The bride says, “It ended up being such a small wedding with so many guests not being able to attend, so we decided not to have groomsmen.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS The bride’s closest friends organised a surprise hen night, which brought some enjoyment back into the planning process − something that had been lost due to all the uncertainties caused by the pandemic. After postponing the day twice, David and Marie-Anthea were so relieved to finally get married after worrying that the day might not go ahead. She says, “We were thrilled and grateful to be able to celebrate the way we’d planned.” A pianist played some beautiful music throughout the wedding breakfast, which created such a great atmosphere that added to the emotion on the day. The musician was a big hit with guests who asked for song requests. A part that stood out the most to David was walking down the aisle with their daughter Emilia and seeing his bride-to-be make her grand entrance. Marie-Anthea comments, “Seeing our guests waiting for us when I entered was so special, especially when Emilia shouted ‘Mama’ and ran up to give me a big hug.” A funny moment was when the couple’s daughter upstaged the groom’s speech by stealing my microphone and babbling into it, which made everyone laugh. The bride says, “Our parents made the day even more special by helping to look after Emilia as it gave us both space to enjoy the day.”
HONEYMOON After their dream wedding ended, the couple travelled to Lefkada in Greece for a week to relax and look back at the day. The bride says, “It was a well-earned rest and gave us a great opportunity to teach Emilia to swim!” 28

ophie and Andrew were studying at The University of Sheffield when they first met at a nearby nightclub and clicked straight away. They didn’t exchange numbers until after they bumped into each other again, and the rest is history! Andrew proposed on the 16th of July 2019, which was a total shock and surprise to Sophie. She says, “We both have busy jobs, and often one of us is working late into the evenings. I assumed that Andrew was working late on that particular day and decided to open a bottle of wine while watching Sex and the City.” She adds, “Andrew came home from work a few hours later and was keen that I stood up to hug him. The next thing I knew, he was on his knee asking me to marry him!” Here Sophie shares details about their special day...

Lucinda and Sef’s intimate woodland-themed wedding was full of romantic touches Images courtesy of John Woodward Photography
L
ucinda and Sef worked at the same marketing agency and first met at a location shoot on a Welsh mountain. Lucinda says, “We were the only two that headed straight to the bar when we got back to the hotel, and we just started chatting. The conversation was effortless, and we discovered how much we had in common. Lucinda adds, “We became great friends over time and then fell in love – friendship is the foundation of our relationship.”
Sef proposed on 21st December 2019, while the couple were walking their dog Crumble. Lucinda says, “After letting me walk ahead, Sef called me back saying he’d found one of those Geocache boxes. But it turns out that he’d actually made a camouflage box and hid the ring inside.” She adds, “I thought we’d found someone else’s engagement ring until Sef was on one knee – it was a total surprise.” Here Lucinda shares details about their special day…
37
The Conservatory at Offley Place Country House Hotel had an intimate feel and was perfect for our ceremony. We also loved how we could revisit the space in the future.
Crumble wore a dark green bow tie on the day and was our little ring bearer.
We originally planned a Christmas-themed wedding in December 2020, but we ended up postponing the day due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
After trying on a Modeca gown called Hazel and crying, I knew I’d found the one.
The groom and groomsmen all wore blue suits with grey waistcoats, but Sef stood out with a bright multi-coloured tie.
38
REAL WEDDINGS
I accessorised my dress with a lace-trimmed veil and my grandmother’s earrings – I was thrilled with the whole look. I let my bridesmaids pick any dark green dress that they felt most comfortable in, and they all looked amazing.
Rather than having table names, we had pictures of our dog Crumble dressed in different guises.
We had a DJ plus a saxophonist who played along to the music and was a massive hit with guests. 39
Sef was very nervous in the morning, but he relaxed and was grinning from ear to ear as soon as he saw me.
I was so excited in the morning and relieved that the day was finally happening after rescheduling four times.
Sef ’s speech was so funny and very well prepared!
Walking down the aisle and seeing everyone for the first time was so emotional, and I managed to hold it all together to enjoy the moment.

ocated in 30 acres of countryside, Toddington Park is a Grade II listed Georgian manor house that provides the perfect wedding setting. Built in 1824 and initially known as Park House, the property has experienced many changes throughout the years, but its majesty remains untouched. Sarah Hyde moved into the property in 2021 and decided it was too good not to share with the public. With the help of other talented suppliers, Sarah created a styled shoot to showcase the beautiful spaces at the venue, including the Grand Entrance Hall, the impressive Drawing Room where ceremonies and receptions occur and not forgetting the rustic tipi. The team did a fantastic job of bringing the house and grounds to life, which is evident from the stunning images! 47

VENUE STYLING
ALL IN THE DETAIL Our experts share popular venue styling trends for 2022 weddings
T
www.pollyandpetal.co.uk
he year 2022 is shaping up to become a popular time to tie the knot and will be full of glorious weddings with showstopping venue styling. With so many concepts and designs, couples can get creative and bring their visions to life. If you’re opting for a property with plenty of character and charm, consider what pieces will work without overpowering the space or clashing with the colour scheme. You’ll want to enhance the space without taking any of its features or natural beauty away. Styling a venue with a blank canvas might seem daunting, but it’s the perfect way to make your day even more personal while matching your theme and colour palette. Think outside of the box and research different ways to transform your venue and make a list of everything you’ll need – start with the essential features first before the finer details. Here at Your Herts and Beds Wedding, we’ve asked some top stylists from around the regions to share trends and advice for wedding styling this year.

HANAKO FLOWER SHOP Katie Parrott says, “Spurred on by the influence of royal and celebrity weddings, we’re seeing floral arches and grand installations sitting as the focal point for many weddings in 2022 and 2023. As florists, this growing trend has allowed us to get creative and capture each love story in a truly bespoke way. “Although classic neutrals will continue to be popular, bright and bold florals are certainly on their way in, ready to add bursts of personality to each ceremony. With heavy influences from the ’80s and ’90s, we will see big and bold colour choices with jewel tones to inject fun into each floral display. “Endless floral choices will be available over the summer months, especially as we embrace the beautiful array of British grown flowers available. Couples will have a lot of room to experiment, and anything goes these days!” Check out: www.hanakoflowers.co.uk

“I like to think of photographers when styling weddings, as they will capture the images and will have the same view as guests. They'll take pictures up the aisle, and a backdrop is a perfect way to create colour behind you while exchanging vows. Decorating chairs with pinwheels and ribbons are other great ways to add fun and colour to this space.
FLEUR DE LACE
“Continue the colour beyond the centrepieces and incorporate fun shades throughout the place settings. Why not use ribbons around the napkins or bright-coloured place names and favours? You can also tie ribbons around the cards box and add colourful tea lights to the cake table.

“If you have flowers at your wedding, these will hugely influence your colour scheme. We try to work alongside each florist to discuss the palette they're using because it often helps us select the perfect shades.
“If you're having a multi-coloured wedding, don’t feel like you have to include every bright colour because you can ditch a particular shade. I had a wedding with a colourful rainbow theme, but the couple hated red and decided not to include it – the colours turned out perfect in the end.
“When it gets darker in the evening, the ceiling lights will help highlight lanterns and any other décor. Why not ask your DJ or band to add colour to the light sequences for their set, rather than just white lights?” Check out: www.fleurdelace.co.uk https://nickisheaphotography.co.uk

Alice Verlaeck-Williams says, “Many couples worry about opting for a colourful wedding as they’re worried it won't look serious enough or that it might look like a kids party. Shove those worries aside as a colourful wedding would represent both of your relaxed personalities and fill your guests with joy. My biggest tip is not to hold back if you want to pimp your venue with a colour frenzy. Here’s a guide to help you create the ultimate colourful wedding!

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

Q&A Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best
LOCKS OF LOVE My hair suffers from breakage due to heat damage, and I’d love to get my healthy locks back. What would you suggest? Depending on how damaged your hair is, a protein treatment is your best bet to treat hair quickly because protein is the building block of healthy hair. You’ll see results quicker if you take specific steps to prevent further damage. Here are a couple of tips to help... ❤ Turn down the temperature on heat-styling tools. If you still need to use heat, using a lower setting for less time will prevent more damage. ❤ Make sure to use a heat-protection product as many people skip this step. ❤ Don’t over-wash your hair, as regular shampooing can strip your locks of natural oils. It might feel like it gets oily at first, but your hair will adjust over time. ❤ When you wash your hair, turn down the heat to a lukewarm temperature and finish with a shot of cold water to close the hair cuticles for a shinier and smoother look. ❤ To keep hair hydrated, use a leave-in conditioner or protein spray. My nourishing leave-in spray is perfect for the task and is one of my most popular products. Add a deep treatment mask once a week, and you’ll see the results! FINDING THE ONE I’m very petite and my fiancé is much taller than me – what dress style would you recommend for a shorter bride to give the illusion of height? Opt for a gown with a flowing and softer silhouette to achieve the illusion of height, such as an empire, A-line, sheath, or column dress. Wearing a long and fairytale-style train will also help create a lengthening effect. Dresses with a plunging neckline work well to lengthen your silhouette, but avoid too much volume or detailing as this tends to shorten the overall shape of gowns. Avoid straight across or strapless necklines and exaggerated mermaid or fishtail styles clinched horizontally across the skirt. Another way to achieve extra height would be high heels, perhaps a stylish wedge for extra stability. Add a hairstyle with a bit of height at the crown to add a few extra inches. Most importantly, remember that you want to feel comfortable and like a more polished version of yourself on your wedding day. So, be true to your style and be fabulous! EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas
https://graceandtheheart.wordpress.com
We’re just starting our big-day journey, and neither of us know what we should look for when booking a venue. What should we keep in mind when looking at different properties?
CREATE THE PERFECT DAY Planning a wedding can seem quite daunting when you first start, so don’t feel like you’re the only ones feeling unsure. When it comes to finding a venue, consider the more practical elements. Knowing your guest list and the style of venue you’re after will help narrow down your options. For example, you might want a classic, modern, quirky or relaxed-styled property. Once you have shortlisted a few venues, consider the different packages on offer and check if they include everything you want or if you would be paying for more than you need. Don’t be afraid to ask the teams many questions as they’re there to help make the day perfect. Fixed packages can get tricky, and that’s why we offer fully bespoke options at Woburn Safari Park to allow you to personalise the day to suit any individual needs. Sarah Turnham | Woburn Safari Park www.woburnsafari.co.uk/weddings
DREAMY BACKDROPS Choosing your wedding venue should be near the top of your priority list as once it’s booked, everything else will be easier to plan. It would be best to consider whether you’re looking to hold your whole day in one place or intend to have your ceremony and reception at separate venues. Think about how many people you intend to invite and what sort of theme you have in mind for the day. Next, decide if you want a location near your hometown, where you live now or where most of your guests will be travelling from. Also, think about how flexible you need the venue to be in terms of catering and entertainment. Lastly, get an idea of the budget you’ll be working with so that you don’t book a venue out of your price range. With these considerations, it’s then a lot easier to list the most suitable venues that fit your requirements. Contact each property to obtain their brochures and arrange a viewing appointment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about anything that isn’t clear or if you have an unusual request as no two weddings are the same. Kerry Mavris | Ware Priory www.warepriory.co.uk 73

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR I want to do something creative with my long and straight hair, but I’m not sure what style to go for. Do you have any suggestions? When choosing a hairstyle for your special day, it’s important to try a few different styles at your hair trial. If you have long and straight hair that doesn’t hold a curl very well, a good option would be a relaxed boho plait to help create texture and movement in your hair. You can have a few pieces out to frame the face or have it all entirely back; always explore your options and try to find out what style you’re most comfortable with. If a relaxed boho look isn’t for you, another good option would be an elegant and sleek bun, which can be tight and neat or exaggerated – what an excellent way to show off the dress’s neckline! Sade Morland Sade Morland Studios www.sademorlandstudios.co.uk 74
CAPTURING MEMORIES We’re feeling anxious about having our photos taken on our wedding day, but we want a lovely album to look back on. Can you offer us some advice? The photographs from your wedding are one of the only things you can keep as a constant reminder of your special day. I would urge anyone reluctant to hire a professional photographer to think really carefully about their decision. I was a very nervous bride and was uncomfortable being the centre of attention. However, the wedding day itself was such a joyful occasion that I soon forgot about the photographer and that everyone would be looking at me. I just enjoyed the day surrounded by the people I loved the most. As a photographer, I’m very sensitive to nerves and always stay as inconspicuous as possible to make couples feel comfortable and confident. If the idea of having your photos taken fills you with dread, don’t put yourselves through endless formal images. Instead, find a photographer who will take lots of natural photos of you having fun or during a quiet and romantic moment with your new husband or wife. FASHION-FORWARD I love lace and want to incorporate it into my gown. Do you have any suggestions for doing this without making the design look old-fashioned? Using lace doesn’t always mean you’ll have an old fashioned or outdated design; in fact, you can still have a modern and stylish style using delicate or bold-style lace. If you’re a modern bride who wants a fresh look using this fabric, wear a fitted or A-line dress with a lace bodice and a plain skirt with pleating or slits for a super modern style. Many statement designs with lace are available for those who love bohemian gowns. These often have a darker lining colour such as latte, mocha or nude shades to make the pattern pop. Lace has become even more feminine over the last few years with floral designs, which are a big trend for 2022 weddings. Many designers from Pronovias to Morilee reinterpreted this traditional fabric in a new modern and fashionable way in their latest collections. We love the added design of 3D flowers over floral lace to make a statement and add texture plus dimension to gowns. Charlotte Izzard-Cook | Lotte Rose Bridal Boutique www.lotterosebridal.co.uk

Situated in Hertford, SOKA Catering & Events Ltd has worked hard to provide the perfect service and tasty dishes for couples on their special day. After quitting their corporate jobs back in 2016, Natalie and Henry followed their love for food and have never looked back. Henry says, “We believe that simple, good-quality ingredients cooked expertly with a knowledgeable and friendly service is the perfect combination.” He adds, “We pride ourselves on having great relationships with our clients and we strive to ensure they have the best food and experience.”

here’s a lot to consider when it comes to wedding catering, from accommodating guests with food allergies to finding a cuisine that everyone likes. To help you plan the perfect menu, we’ve asked Natalie and Henry Jacob at SOKA Catering & Events Ltd to share some advice and inspiration.
https://chio-fernandez.com
ALL THINGS CANAPÉS Canapés are the perfect option to keep guests from going hungry after ceremonies. Henry says, “Don’t forget that weddings are a long day for your guests as well as you. They would have started getting ready early and sometimes will be travelling far – it’s likely they haven’t had a chance to eat properly before arriving. Serving canapés adds that extra touch of sophistication, but it also helps create interaction between loved ones and keeps everyone entertained while you’re off having photos taken.” 77
SEASONAL DISH IDEAS https://chio-fernandez.com
TOP SEASONAL DISH Allotment salad with broad beans, pecorino and cold-pressed rapeseed oil.
SUMMER LOVIN’
https://chio-fernandez.com
“Everyone loves to see how we cook food; why not add some theatre and get mouths watering with a food display such as a whole lamb being cooked over an open fire for 12 hours? It also provides interactive entertainment as guests hang out around the firepit and chatting with the chefs.
AUTUMNAL VIBES
James Marinos
TOP SEASONAL DISH Barbecued sea bass stuffed with lemon and herbs with panzanella and salsa verde.
“Most guests will have a drink in hand when it gets to the evening, so think about foods that are easy to eat without cutlery or plates – you don’t want guests leaving the dancefloor to eat. Just like the drinks reception, let us bring the food to you with waiting staff. Comfort food is always a winner during the autumn months; think bacon rolls, Cornish pasties or summer street food such as burgers or flatbreads.
TOP SEASONAL DISH Butternut squash and radicchio pie with squash puree plus crispy sage and pinenuts.
WINTER WONDERLAND
https://chio-fernandez.com
https://chio-fernandez.com
SPRING FEVER “After the New Year, people start getting ready for summer bodies, and diets tend to be in full swing in the spring. Don’t worry about this; focus on choosing a menu that’s right for you both and let your caterer deal with any dietary requirements or concerns. The company should take the stress away from you and tailor the main menu to suit any needs. Trust the team as they’ve done this a thousand times and have a stress-free way of managing things.
“A great way to get guests chatting around the table is by breaking bread together. Without providing ice breakers and formal introductions, food is a great way to get your guests talking to each other. Sharing bowls of salads and an array of bread is an excellent way for new friendships to blossom.”
TOP SEASONAL DISH Slow braised lamb shoulder with confit garlic mash and buttered brussel tops.

Let me eat cake!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
A
s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.
JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier
design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
82
Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are
entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.
To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!
Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.
I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.
Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.
I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.
My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.
Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.
The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 83

A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.
Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.
WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.
Book it: Nightly rates at Monkey Island Estate start from £275 per room, per night in a Temple Room. 01628 623 400, www.monkeyislandestate.co.uk www.facebook.com/MonkeyIslandEstate www.instagram.com/monkeyislandestate
