The time has come W
-day is imminent! As the County Wedding Magazines editorial crew prepare to see our beloved senior editor Melissa become a Mrs, we can’t help but be niggled by at least a small sense of shock at just how quickly the big day has come around. Something, I’ve no doubt you’re all experiencing too as your own weddings draw closer. Christmas Day 2020 feels like only yesterday, when my fellow bridesmaid, Olivia, and I bombarded Melissa with WhatsApp messages: “Has he done it yet? Has he done it yet?” We knew the proposal was imminent you see, and were more than just a tad excited! Boy, have we had an adventure together since: the tears of joy at being asked to be bridesmaids (“Are you sure you want me?”), the fun of shopping for the dresses, and the hilarity of the hen dos (yes plural, she deserves it). The past year-and-a-half has seen us grow closer as friends, not just Melissa, Olivia and I – the three amigos; but also with our gorgeous fellow bridesmaid Nolwenn and the groom, dear Dave. Weddings have a habit of doing that don’t they? Of course, they’re a celebration of love between the all-important couple, but more than that, they allow a much wider expression of love for friends, family and even fur-babies! After all, that’s why we’re all here isn’t it? I know it’s why I spend my days writing about your amazing big days and why I never tire of looking at the resulting photographs. To quote a hero of mine, RuPaul: “Everybody say love.” I hope you enjoy the oodles of inspiration this issue has to offer. We’ve got three breathtaking styled shoots packed with ideas from Kent’s finest wedding suppliers, as well as three incredible real weddings. Plus, there’s plenty of guidance on styling your venue and how to keep your guests entertained dawn to dusk. So, dive in! Enjoy and keeeep planning!

A SLICE OF THE ACTION
Medway-based Erica Dunn started as a hobby baker 11 years ago after a cake made for her son’s birthday was not at all what she was expecting. “It looked terrible and tasted awful, so I had a go myself and became hooked,” she tells us. Since then she’s made hundreds of celebration cakes, big-day bakes and cupcakes for friends and family, with people regularly exclaiming: “You’re so talented,” and, “Your cakes are fantastic to look at and taste amazing too!” So it was, in October 2021 that she decided to take her hobby to the next level and her registered business EriCakes was born. Her introduction to the wedding industry came as a baptism by fire when friend and fellow baker Chelsea Prior of Chelsea Buns Cake Design asked her to finish, decorate and deliver one of her couples’ cakes when she suddenly went into labour in December 2021. “It was due to be Chelsea’s last cake of 2021 and she’d baked it, ready to decorate and deliver before starting her maternity leave. When she asked me to help I jumped at the chance. I was so nervous, but also extremely happy with the result. I feel like this cake gave me back the excitement and love I have for making wedding cakes, and I can’t wait to make more in the future,” Erica explains. OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING!
The ultimate space for bride-tribe preparations has arrived in Ashford. Based in a beautiful, light and airy oast barn, The Pretty Prep Studios have been thoughtfully and purposefully designed for wedding day mornings with every detail in hand from umbrellas in case it rains, to boxes for belongings to hide any untidiness from photos. There are four beauty stations, so no more fighting over plug sockets or mirrors and there’s plenty of free parking so you can leave your cars if you wish. The kitchen and dining area is the ideal place for some morning snacks and bubbles, where your best gals can chill after they’ve had their turn in the hair and make-up chair. We adore the circular changing oast, a luxurious area with plenty of space for slipping into your wedding dress. What’s more, we all know these things can’t be rushed, so the studio is available as early as you need it and for as long as it takes. The Pretty Prep Studios can accommodate bridal parties large or small – even with 10 or more people, there’s still plenty of space. To find out more, head over to www.theprettyprepstudios.co.uk

YOUR ESSENTIALS
JEWEL IN THE CROWN
The team at Fitzgerald Jewellers in Canterbury are super-excited to have been shortlisted for no less than six prestigious awards this year: Bespoke Jewellery Retailer of the Year, Retailer of the Year (six stores or fewer), and Store Design of the Year all in the Retail Jeweller awards; Best New Store or Store Refurbishment of the Year – Professional Jeweller; Retailer of the Year – NAJ Awards; and Best Jewellery in Kent – Muddy Stilettos Awards. Having moved to new premises at the beginning of December 2021 the business has gone from strength to strength. The new store is more than 2,000sq ft, which has really given it space to grow and be able to showcase its fantastic brands, as well as placing the focus on its own handmade jewellery that the team is so proud of. Everything within this collection is handmade on site in the new open workshop, which allows customers to see the goldsmiths working on their bespoke commissions, including wedding rings, and repairs. The staff, who are passionate about what they do, will give you a warm welcome in store, and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the homely feel it exudes with an eclectic mix of vintage and antique furniture, plants and soft lighting. We love the huge conservatory area, which boasts a bright and stunning view of Canterbury Cathedral. Find out more at www.fitzgeraldjewellers.co.uk

PERFECTLY AUSTEN
Once a regular haunt of much-loved novelist Jane Austen, Goodnestone Park has announced a new state-of-the-art orangery – the ultimate space for weddings. A vast, privately-owned estate in the heart of the Kent countryside Goodnestone Park boasts a grand house, built in 1704. One of Jane Austen’s favourite retreats the property was home to her brother, Edward, who settled there shortly after he married Elizabeth Bridges. In fact, in 1796, Jane decided to use the estate as a writing retreat, penning her most famous novel, Pride & Prejudice there. Literary scholars believe Goodnestone Park inspired some of the houses in her works since she frequently wrote about it in her letters. The next stage in the stately home’s history sees it launching a custom-made luxury timber-framed marquee, which will be the first orangery to be built on the site, situated next to the House, overlooking jaw-dropping parkland. In partnership with marquee specialists LPM Bohemia, The Orangery will play host to weddings and other events. The design has been carefully considered, reflecting 17th- to 19th-century gardening trends and will be hand-crafted in the heart of Kent using locally-sourced natural materials and sustainably sourced timber. John Preston, director and co-owner of LPM Bohemia explains, “When conceptualising The Orangery’s design, we aimed to seamlessly fuse the historical setting of Goodnestone with a modern sensibility, while honouring the timeless gardens via the marquee’s botanical-themed lining.” You’ll be able to book the marquee for an all-encompassing Goodnestone experience, with private hire encapsulating the surrounding 15 acres of greenery, Serpentine Walk, additional guest accommodation at Bonnington Cottage and the option of an evening tipple and bite at the local Fitzwalter Arms village pub, owned by the estate. Expanding on its current wedding offering the venue has teamed up with The Wedding Dolls, a Kent-based wedding-planning service, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2022. EVERLASTING LOVE
A Kent-based small business has sown the seed for a stunning new method of wedding flower preservation. Owned and managed by Yasmin Balcombe, Bespoke Botanicals offers resin wedding flower preservation across a range of styles and designs. With traditional bouquet framing now falling out of fashion, this new take has proven to be a hit with stylish couples everywhere! Flowers can be set into resin in an assortment of different ways, from a photo frame containing the florals from your special day, to a set of botanical coasters or resin display blocks featuring everlasting blooms. Preserved wedding flowers can make a great gift to add to your wish list, while smaller designs work beautifully as favours on the day. Other designs include free-standing floral letters, ornaments of various shapes and sizes, framed dates and letters, keyrings, jewellery, ring holders and even a side table. If you’re thinking about having your bouquet preserved, be sure to reserve your date online in advance to ensure availability. Most flowers can be preserved, whether freshly cut, kept safe after the big day or already dried. Blooms are sent directly to the studio, where they’ll be carefully dried and arranged to maintain their natural shape and beauty. This process takes anywhere from three days to three weeks depending on flower variety. Once dried, they’ll be arranged in the mould and you’ll be given the option to collaborate on the ideal layout. As soon as it’s been approved, it will be cast in crystal clear resin becoming an everlasting heirloom. The entire process takes several weeks, with resin poured gradually in layers and left to cure, maintaining the natural vigour of each and every petal. Dates are filling up fast, so head over to www.bespokebotanicals.uk now to find out more.

LEEDS CASTLE
01622 767 877 | www.leeds-castle.com/weddings
Leeds Castle rises majestically from the water in the glorious Kent countryside in Maidstone. It has a riveting history from serving six of England's Medieval queens, to its elaborate transformation into an elegant 20th-century retreat by Anglo-American heiress, Lady Baillie. Here, your wedding party is welcomed by architectural and interior excellence throughout the Castle, Maiden's Tower and Battel Hall, including 16th-century period design to original 1930s masterpieces. Ceremonies and celebrations can be held in the Castle with 100 guests for the “I dos” and wedding breakfast and 120 for the reception (or even up to 200 in the Fairfax Hall). Your banquet-style wedding breakfast will be served in the largest room, the Salon. This room was historically used by Lady Baillie, her esteemed guests of the silver screen, society's finest and leading influencers, as they partied the night away at lavish weekend soirees in the 1930s. Maiden's Tower can accommodate 80 for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, with space for 100 at the evening bash. A 16th-century stone building, this is a glamorous self-contained venue consisting of two function rooms with French doors leading onto a charming private garden and boasts five en-suite guest rooms. Built in the early 14th-century as a Medieval manor, Battel Hall is a fine and rare example of local Kentish architecture. Say “I do” in the beautiful ceremony room featuring rich wood panelling, before you move into the drawing room or library, both wonderfully traditional rooms for entertaining guests. An intimate venue, it can host 14 loved ones throughout the day. Upstairs, five luxurious en-suite guest bedrooms offer stunning views of the gardens, the far North Downs and glimpses of the Castle. The adjacent Grade II listed Battel Hall Oast offers a further bathroom and two bedrooms. If you wish to invite more guests in the evening, The Fairfax Barn offers more space if you're getting married in the Castle or Maiden's Tower. Here, there's room for 200 loved ones. It leads on to a large terrace where your guests can mingle on a fine evening. For weddings larger still, look towards the marquee option. Here you can invite more than 200 guests to celebrate with you on the Cedar Lawn with impressive views of the estate and Caste nestled amid the Moat.
STEP BACK IN TIME Leeds Castle's mesmerising historical gardens and architectural landscapes are filled with beauty whatever the season. The Princess Alexandra Gardens are a mass of azaelas, while tall bamboo lends atmosphere to the Oriental Gardens. The Lady Baillie Mediterranean Garden Terraces are reminiscent of sun-drenched Europe. Particularly restful, it offers benches to view the Great Water and acres of parkland beyond. Finally, the fragrant Culpeper Gardens are filled with florals, hedges and herbaceous beds bringing a sense of tranquillity and often visited by local wildlife.

REAL WEDDING
L
izi and Jack met during their third year of university, at one of the first social nights after the Christmas break. Lizi says, “I didn’t take to him immediately, but he won me over when I realised we were both as socially awkward as each other! His Geordie accent was, and still is, a winner for me.” While on holiday in Thailand in January 2020, they’d make it a routine to watch the sunset from their hotel’s private beach with a couple of beers. One day following a boat trip, Jack suggested they head back to enjoy the sunset as usual, so he grabbed the beers from the hotel room while Lizi made her way to the beach. When he joined her 10 minutes later, he pulled out an engagement ring and said, “You know you’ve been wanting a new ring... what about this one?” He’d had it hidden in the camera case the whole time – “I had wondered why we didn’t take many photos!” Lizi says. The couple had recently moved to Aylesford and while out walking one day they passed a venue that Lizi instantly fell in love with. She turned to Jack and said, “We’d better start saving as that’s where we’re getting married!” It was Bradbourne House. In the spring of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Chic Weddings launched a competition for one NHS hero to have the chance to win their wedding day. Many local suppliers generously donated their incredible services to the cause, and Lizi and Jack were the lucky, and deserving, winners. Read on as the bride herself gives us the lowdown on the big day...
SETTING THE SCENE “I owe all of the finishing touches to Laurie and Steph at Chic Weddings,” Lizi explains. The expert duo interpreted what the bride describes as her, “vague and indecisive description” of what she thought she’d like and made it everything she’d dreamed of and more. Equally, she says, “Richard from ByBlossom and Shelley from Shelley’s Cakes were miracle workers, having created the most perfect stationery and cake display with very unhelpful input from Jack and me! Wedding favours placed on the tables were sparklers for each guest. After the wedding breakfast everyone went outside and stood on the steps of Bradbourne House, which created an impressive scene with all the sparklers lit, and was quite fitting since the wedding fell the day after Bonfire Night.
LOOKING THE PART The lovely consultants at Victoria’s Bridal Boutique in Orpington picked out a selection of dresses for Lizi to try on ahead of her appointment. They even set up a flat screen TV allowing her bridesmaids and mother-in-law to join in virtually, since Covid restrictions meant they couldn’t be there in person. “I tried them all on and the one that made my girlfriends cry was the one I chose,” Lizi tells us. She continues, “The ladies were so lovely and skilled that they even suggested customising the dress with cap sleeves made from the same lace as the gown, making it unique to me.” Lizi had always planned to wear her hair down with no accessories, but during the second fitting, her mother and mother-inlaw talked her into trying a tiara, which she then found very difficult to take off! The bridesmaids wore lemon dresses, which was the only part of the wedding that Lizi had a definitive view on from the very 31

REAL WEDDING beginning. “I found out later, this was the same colour my mother chose for her wedding,” she says. The bride tribe found the gown online and it suited them all perfectly – “They all looked breathtakingly beautiful,” the bride remembers. Jack, his best man and his dad all wore navy three-piece suits with lemon ties and buttonholes to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. “His groomsmen’s suits didn’t match, but they all looked dapper nonetheless and had matching buttonholes,” Lizi tells us. The groom completed his look with a pair of black Loake Oxford shoes.
TIME TO CELEBRATE A DJ played a set in the evening and was an absolute hit. “He was amazing, playing all the bangers and I’m fairly certain we didn’t leave the dancefloor all night. In fact, we didn’t even realise the evening buffet had been served,” Lizi remembers. They also booked a toastmaster, who was entertaining in himself. “I didn’t realise anyone had a louder voice than me!” Lizi jokes.
“I used to be a singer and recorded the song I walked down the aisle to. It was my gift to Jack.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS The whole day was brimming with laughter from start to finish, and despite poor Jack being a nervous wreck until after his speech bless him, the newlyweds enjoyed every moment to the full. One hilarious highlight for the bride was enjoying a few too many gin cocktails and, thinking she was Baby from Dirty Dancing, ran across the Great Hall in her sliders before launching herself into the arms of her emergency department colleagues. To their credit, they did manage to replicate the big lift and spun her around in the air!
WITH THANKS “I’ll never forget the effort people made for us,” Lizi says. She continues, “It’s still surreal to think that people came from all over the country to celebrate with us. With Jack’s family being from the North East and a lot of mine from South Wales, it was amazing to see everyone together for one day. “The entire day was only possible thanks to Laurie at Chic Weddings and the astounding generosity of the many other suppliers who donated their services. All of them are complete perfectionists and geniuses at what they do. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Laurie is a wonder woman with such a kind heart, enabling us to have the most spectacular day that we could only have dreamed of.”

REAL WEDDINGS
GAME,SET, Becky and Nick made sure their intimate wedding day had an informal and fun vibe... with just a touch of sparkle! Images courtesy of Florence Berry Photography
37
B
ecky met tennis coach Nick through a mutual enjoyment of the sport. One evening, during a posttennis pub session, someone had the bright idea of taking part in a charity run for Sport Relief and Nick decided he’d watch the film Run Fat Boy Run to motivate him, which in turn sparked a conversation between the two about the many, many other films Becky had never seen! And so it was their epic Friday movie and pizza nights began. Through these evenings Becky and Nick grew close and 12 years later they’re still going strong! Incidentally, the couple did go on to compete in that Sport Relief run in 2010, dressed as red chilli peppers, because as Becky says, “Why not?” Nick had planned to pop the question in Bruges, while visiting the Christmas markets there, but unfortunately the trip had to be cancelled. Becky had been bitten by a dog in the line of duty as a veterinary nurse and following multiple visits to A&E, they decided it was best not to travel. Instead, they enjoyed a wonderful day out in London shopping at the Christmas markets, visiting Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and dining at the Heliot Steak House in Leicester Square. Nick surprised Becky with the proposal that evening. They did get to Bruges in the end though – exactly one year later, when they were able to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their engagement! When they started looking at venues, they found themselves attracted to St Julian’s Club. “We could have the ceremony and reception at the same venue, which is what we wanted. It wasn’t too big, so it suited our small guest list and we just couldn’t forget the gorgeous conservatory with its wisteria,” Becky explains. Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day, 3rd July 2021...

REAL WEDDINGS
FUN AND INFORMAL The couple chose personalised blue and white M&Ms, to fit the palette and informal theme – “Not to mention my love of chocolate!” says Becky. A giant helium balloon filled with white feathers sat on each table, along with prosecco bottles filled with fairylights and some shimmer to add to the toast drinks for a bit of sparkle and fun. The bride wrote out all of the place names to suit the blue, gold and glitter theme. Nick’s sister was a florist and created all of the floral arrangements including the bouquets and buttonholes. “We opted for a white, pale pink and green theme, which looked stunning,” Becky says. “As the venue was so pretty we didn’t need much extra décor. We had some large lanterns with candles out on the terrace and some more balloons containing feathers and rose gold confetti,” she continues. The wedding breakfast was a barbecue,
which was the perfect fit for Becky and Nick’s informal, fun theme. “We didn’t want a sit-down meal. Plus, barbecues are one of our favourite things,” Becky tells us.
SPARKLE AND SHINE The beautiful bride wore Arial by Ellis Bridals. Becky remembers, “I loved the sparkly, figureflattering style as it made me feel so special. I accessorised with a veil adorned in tiny pearls as it was something my mum particularly wanted to see me in. When I tried it on with the dress it made her cry, so I knew it was perfect.” Her shoes were glitter trainers from Kate Spade – “I love all things sparkly and don’t ever wear high heels, so I wasn’t about to start on my wedding day!” Becky explains. She completed the look with a necklace – a wedding-morning gift from Nick; and a bangle, which is one of a matching pair she has with her mum, made 39
for them by her dad. They include diamonds from his aunt’s engagement ring. The finishing touch was the tiny silver dog bracelet she wears all the time, which people often associate with her and her job. Nick wore a navy and grey tail suit and stood out from his groomsmen as his trousers were the same grey as his waistcoat, whereas the other gents wore navy trousers to match their suit jackets. The bridesmaids wore royal blue, one shoulder, floor-length dresses – Dani by Monsoon.
THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! The couple postponed the wedding from July 2020 to July 2021 due to Covid and because of restrictions still in place at the time they were only permitted 30 guests. “Luckily we both have small families, so we could have everyone there we needed, and it turned out to be super-intimate and amazing. We had the chance to speak to and spend time with everyone and the day absolutely flew by,” Becky shares. But it did mean they weren’t allowed to have a DJ or dancing. However, they booked a super-cool VW Campervan photo booth for the afternoon, which was a huge hit with guests – “It was great fun and produced plenty of laughs as well as great photo memories,” Becky recalls. Then, after dark, it was time for sparklers out on the terrace with everyone getting involved.
WITH THANKS The bride says, “All the staff at St Julians couldn’t do enough for us and we couldn’t fault them on the day. Hayley Laws, who did my hair and make-up did the best job – I’ve never looked so good! Also, we couldn’t be happier with our photographer, Florence. We have the greatest photos to look back on and remember the day forever.”
BECKY’S TOP TIP “When planning we often got caught up in worrying about whether everyone would like what we were choosing, but in the end we just went for what we like. It worked out so much better than picking the traditional things you think you should have. So our tip would be to just let your personalities out and go for what you want on your day.”

REAL WEDDINGS
where the heart is HOME IS
Robyn and Sam said “I do” at Chiddingstone Castle, followed by celebrations under canvas at the bride’s family home Images courtesy of Photographed by John Knight
R
obyn and Sam met on a night out, which in itself wasn’t unusual as they would often bump into each other while out with their respective friends. But following this one particular time they decided to meet up again properly, perhaps realising there might a reason their paths kept crossing. We fast forward and, now a couple, Robyn and Sam had booked a long weekend away in the Cotswolds. One evening, while they were there, before heading to the pub for dinner, Sam popped the question. “I had no idea, but it was perfect for me, as it was just the two of us,” Robyn remembers. Knowing they wanted to host their wedding reception at
Robyn’s parents’ house, it made sense to look for a ceremony venue nearby. They were also keen on the idea of open-air “I dos,” so when they found the Orangery at Chiddingstone Castle, they knew it was the place. “It felt different to everything else we’d seen. It was such a beautiful setting and had the relaxed vibe we wanted. The inside room available in case of bad weather was just as lovely, and we also had exclusive use of the venue for the day, meaning we could enjoy it without members of the public being there.” Read on as Robyn tells us more about their wonderful wedding day, which took place on 9th July, 2021...
43
I really wanted my bridal car to fit in with my style, and being a country girl at heart, I chose a white Land Rover Defender.
I wore a dress by Amanda Wakeley. I loved the idea of a classic, simple and elegant style, something not too wedding dressy! The geometric pattern was different to anything I’d seen before.
I wanted the dress to remain centre stage and was convinced I wasn’t going to wear a veil, but completely changed my mind once we pieced it all together at the fitting. I also wore a small hairpiece and Malone Soulier shoes.
My sisters were my bridesmaids. They’re all quite different in style, so I didn’t want to dictate what they had to wear and instead let them choose what they felt most comfortable in. We went for light pinks and greens. I wanted there to be plenty of colour, but in muted tones. 44
Sam wore a navy three-piece suit made for him by Sims & MacDonald, paired with a blush pink tie. The groomsmen also wore navy, but their suits were a little more simple. The groom stood out further with a bigger buttonhole. Our ceremony flowers were designed to be repositioned at the reception venue afterwards. Therefore, we got to enjoy them for longer and make the most of them. They went over and above our expectations – they were amazing.
Inside the tipi, the Goat Live team set up amazing floral halos, as well as table and bar decorations.
REAL WEDDINGS
For Sam, his standout moment was when I walked down the aisle. For me it was the confetti throw we did at the reception with all of our guests together. Seeing all of our friends and family together after such a long time apart was a highlight for both of us.
Urban Pantry served really tasty bowl food after the ceremony, in keeping with our relaxed theme. For the reception we had a barbecue with kebabs and show-off style dishes, Shaun from Purple Pumpkin was fab in terms of catering exactly to our ideas. Another cool element was the loaded fries van that turned up at the perfect time to serve munchies after a few drinks.
After moving the wedding back a year due to Covid, it felt like a huge relief that everything had come together. Plus, the sun was shining, which was one of my biggest concerns – it made the day even more perfect.
We had a roaming band, Fairvue, at the ceremony and reception. We also booked Paul Hardcastle Junior as the main DJ who was a real hit.
My sister Sarah and her bandmate, Reva, performed a set after the speeches. My other sister Georgie sang at the ceremony, which was really special. My parents surprised us with a Bruno Mars tribute who performed later in the evening. 45
Mini champagne bottles were handed out on arrival and individual shots of limoncello were given out during my sister’s speech.
After the party, the unofficial after party started, which continued for another two full days!
Get organised early and book all of the main elements early, so that nearer the time you know they’re sorted. Then you can enjoy organising the finer details.
Instead of a traditional wedding cake we opted for 3D layered cookies built up to look like cakes. They featured our initials and wedding date. They were individually boxed and we handed them out to guests to take as they left.
Be sure to speak to your local suppliers. We loved using ours as they were not only amazing, but it made the planning easy with everyone being so accessible.

PALETTE
Using 2022’s on-trend palette of sage green and blush pink, this local team of wedding professionals created a shoot that encapsulates the natural beauty of a Kentish summer wedding Images courtesy of Lisa Kennedy Photography UK
T
he stylish interior of Edenwood Place served as the inspiration behind this chic local shoot. Decorated throughout in refreshing greens and rustic oranges, the palette is a perfect fit for a swoon-worthy big day. Photographer and shoot co-ordinator Lisa Kennedy, along with Jo from JS Perfections Weddings and Occasions, decided to add an on-trend twist and narrow down the colour theme further for the styling with tones of relaxing sage and elements of blush. Lisa explains, “Sage green is a flattering shade, works with most skin tones and is easily incorporated into any style of wedding from the bridal attire to buttonholes, and everything in between. It brought an exquisite spring/summer-feel to our shoot, and along with blush, complements the rich, rustic colours found in nature as well as our venue’s surroundings.” 53

VENUE STYLING
A THEME
come true
The ultimate guide to styling your venue
J
oin us for a stroll through the wonderful world of wedding venue styling. It’s all too easy to get carried away, but when a simple idea is executed to perfection... well, that’s when you have a theme come true!
CHOOSING A THEME Settling on a theme can be a tricky business, so the best way forward might be to consider your personalities and common ground. Laurie Edwards at Chic Weddings & Events says, “Whether it’s travel, cocktails, or Disney this is the time to bring your interests into your wedding. Little accents like naming your tables after your favourite football teams or holiday destinations works wonders, and if you love being out in the country, bring the outside in by incorporating trees, wood, bark and moss into your styling.” Mercedes Gale at 4YaParty Weddings & Events agrees: “Is your partner a big gamer or into Marvel? Try to incorporate each other’s loves into your theme and your day will truly be all about the two of you.”
Chic Weddings & Events © jeffoliverphotography.com
PICK A PALETTE There’s an easy-to-remember trick when it comes to choosing the perfect palette and that’s the rule of three. Mercedes explains, “When choosing your wedding colours, try not to exceed three, and let one of them be an accent metallic shade such as gold, silver or rose gold.” However, there’s an exception to every rule! Mercedes continues, “If you’re going for a more muted or a loud and bright theme then you can ignore the threecolour rule and have as many or as few as you want.”
Another key to picking your palette is the time of year. Laurie tells us, “Shades or tones of the same colour work beautifully together, as well as those that complement each other. For example, burgundy and blush for a summer wedding, or burgundy and burnt orange for an autumnal feel.” Neutrals and classic white are wedding stalwarts for a reason, they’re totally timeless. Laurie says, “I hear couples describe themselves as boring and almost apologise for choosing a white and ivory palette – but don’t! Some of the most gorgeous weddings I’ve created are neutral and you’ll be able to look back at your wedding photos 10 years later, when your elegant theme will still look classic and gorgeous.” THE VENUE SPEAKS VOLUMES It doesn’t pay to ignore the setting you’ll be styling, not only when deciding on a theme and palette, but practicality too is crucial. There are some important points to bear in mind. Laurie suggests some questions you’ll need to ask your venue together with your stylist in order to ensure the space looks its very best and nothing trips you up along the way: ❤ Are there any low points in the ceiling that will mean we need a smaller centrepiece? ❤ Do you use the same chairs for the ceremony and wedding breakfast or do we need to dress two sets? ❤ Is there a candle policy in place? ❤ Will the venue team move décor from the ceremony to the reception, or does my stylist need to do it? ❤ Are there any time constraints on setting up and collection? Roxanne Thomas at The Little Wedding Warehouse also has some more suggestions when quizzing your venue: ❤ Do you have a list of recommended suppliers and if so, are you allowed to hire suppliers outside of this list? ❤ Are we allowed to attach décor to the ceiling, beams and/or walls? ❤ How long do you get to set up in the space – the day before or just the morning of the wedding? In fact, the venue has such an impact on the theme and palette that stylists will often suggest they carry out your consultation on site – Mercedes certainly does. She explains, “The venue is such a huge factor in choosing the look of your big day. If you’ve booked somewhere with grand high ceilings, ornate tapestries and huge chandeliers, a rustic theme may not be the best option! Work with what you have already and this will keep your décor costs low too.” 57
Chic Weddings & Events
“Work with your venue’s character and charm. Some fusions work brilliantly, others not so much. If you’re unsure use existing features as a foundation and add your own style bit by bit.” – Roxanne Thomas, Little Wedding Warehouse
LOOKING AFTER THE PENNIES “There’s a common misconception that getting a professional venue stylist is going to cost more than going the DIY route, but this isn’t always the case and the pros of getting a stylist far outweigh the perceived savings in costs for DIY,” Mercedes tells us. When it comes to setting yourself a realistic budget, she advises, “Look around and get quotes from a few different stylists. My clients tend to spend between £600 and £900 on their décor for a wedding of about 75-100 guests, but this will be different for every venue stylist. Laurie advises that you over rather than under budget. After all, it’s easier to reduce than increase. “Work with your stylist to create a wish list and try to prioritise what’s important to you,” she says, “A centrepiece may seem expensive, but this is what will create the wow factor in your venue. Go for impact with focal pieces that will leave an impression.” One way to make the best use of your funds, making the pounds stretch further, is to choose ceremony décor that can be used in your reception styling later... or vice versa. “For instance, a table centrepiece can be used to dress the aisle in your ceremony by standing it on a pillar, and a
top table arrangement can be used on your registrars desk,” Laurie says, “A moon gate, arch or backdrop used to dress the altar can be moved behind your top table or transformed into a selfie station for evening guests.”
“Keep it sustainable and cut down on waste. Book your florist to stay after the ceremony and break down a big arrangement into small bouquets for your guests to take home as wedding favours.” – Roxanne Thomas, Little Wedding Warehouse THE COMMON PITFALLS 1. THE PINTEREST RABBIT HOLE Roxanne says, “We all do it, trawl through Instagram and Pinterest for hours looking at gorgeous weddings and, as lovely as they are, it can be quite overwhelming. You want your day to reflect you, so take inspiration, create a couple of mood boards, then pick out a few elements that really stand out to you both and work from there. That way, the end result will feel more personal than just aiming for the picture-perfect Pinterest wedding.” 2. THE COVER UP Laurie says, “If there’s something you really don’t like in your venue such as a bar shutter or picture, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that decorating it with fairylights or flower garlands will disguise or enhance it – it’s completely the opposite, as the eye will go straight to it. If you can’t cover it completely with a backdrop or drapes, just leave well alone and give your guests something else to look at like a gorgeous table centre or top table design.” 3. LOST IN SPACE Roxanne says, “A large venue with lots of different rooms or areas may sound appealing, but there are a few reasons why this may not be ideal. Firstly, you don’t want your guests to spread out too much, ideally you want them to all stay in one room if possible. If there are lots of spaces, your nearest and dearest are more likely to wander off when you’d rather they were with you on the dancefloor!”

Summertime
ROMANCE An infusion of coral and blue was the order of the day at The Oak Barn when this talented team of wedding aficionados rolled into town Images courtesy of Nicola Dawson Photography and Natalie Evans Photography
“
W
hen you work with the best wedding suppliers – magical things happen,” says shoot coordinator Kerry-Ann Wells from Kerry-Ann Makeup. Along with Sam Beadle from Flutterbee Me, her fellow brains behind the project, she brought together a superb team of professionals to bring the duo’s ideas to life. Kerry-Ann continues, “We have smoke cannons, backdrops and florals to die for, table settings that dreams are made of, mouth-watering food, children’s chill-out zones and much more. And with a summer-fresh vision and infusion of corals and blues, we added luxury in all the detailing.” The glorious images were captured at The Oak Barn, nestled in the peaceful village of Benenden. Located among 25-acres of land this Grade II listed farm barn has been converted into a modern setting along with a separate building, available to host ceremonies. What’s more, the venue is proud to upcycle and reuse where possible and is dedicated to its eco-friendly ethos.

Keeping children entertained at your wedding can be tricky, so the team created a kids’ chill-out zone to showcase ideas to suit any theme. Super-cute models Tia, Isaac and Daisy had a fab time!

Kerry-Ann had a vision of a soft romantic look for the model bride. Beautiful peach tones and radiant, dewy skin, with an elegant, textured bun and handmade bejewelled hair comb complemented the gorgeous gowns perfectly.

Renowned for being one of the UK’s top magicians, Matty Evans has added a new string to his bow with an additional wedding-day service as Your Magical Host. A contemporary twist on the traditional toastmaster, he’ll also bring his blend of comedy, magic and mind-reading to the proceedings. Matty tells us, “I’ll welcome your guests and get the buzz going from the start, getting everyone chatting and laughing instead of just waiting around. I’ll guide everyone to where they need to be, entertain at any slow points and make all the key announcements.” As a seasoned entertainer, Matty has spent years performing the length and breath of the country, has appeared at hundreds of weddings and won multiple wedding awards. He knows exactly what it takes to keep things running smoothly and on time, as well as supplying you with memorable entertainment. For more information, including full details of the new Half-Day, and Full-Day Host & Entertainment packages, check out www.mattyevansmagic.co.uk/weddings
Matty’s top tip “Take your time. Don’t be rushed into booking any wedding supplier. What others recommend might not be the perfect fit for you. I’d highly recommend meeting the supplier and seeing what they do in person.” 67
7 LIVE BAND
Whatever your style there’s a band out there for you. Experienced musicians are adept at judging the vibe on the dancefloor, making sure they keep those dancing feet busy all night. Many will learn that special first dance song for you at your request and some offer super-flexible options to bring you suitable entertainment from low key drinks reception music to full-scale floor-fillers in the evening. Our golden rule? Make sure you get to a live gig to see what they can do before you book. It’s well worth seeing what’s out there.
8 CARICATURES Give your loved ones their own unique piece of artwork to take home. It’s easier than it sounds when you hire a caricaturist. Everyone will be so busy lining up for their turn, they won’t even notice when you disappear with your photographer. Check out www.theartfuldoodler.co.uk
9 SINGING WAITERS
The looks on your guests’ faces will be priceless and worthy of tagging when singing waiters are in town. #Awks turns into joy, laughter and delight in a heartbeat.
10 AXE THROWING Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but fear not, an instructor is provided when you book with Joe’s Bows, who also offer archery, laser clay shooting and falconry experiences. Your wedding will be sure to create some fun memories for all. Check out www.joesbows.co.uk
13 HARPIST Nothing beats the sound of a harp for oh-so romantic ceremony music. Gentle and melodic, it sets just the right tone as you prepare to walk down the aisle. A harpist is also wonderful to bring an air of class to the drinks reception – you’ll be surprised at how good this instrument makes the Disney greats sound!

11 BOUNCY CASTLE Oodles of fun for little and big kids alike. Keep it classy with a white wedding version. Check out www.abcastlehire.co.uk
12 COCKTAILS Make the drinks reception all the more fun and personalised with your own wedding-day cocktail, whether it’s your favourite or something of your own creation. Faversham-based Wild Box Events offers a bespoke package serving custom cocktails from it’s trendy horsebox bar. Check out www.wildboxevents.co.uk
14 VOCALIST
If you’re a fan of live music, why not hire an acoustic soloist for the parts of that day that aren’t necessarily suited to a full plugged-in band. Check out www.facebook.com/Hannah.sings.weddingsinger

Get your guests working together to solve a head-scratching mystery unfolding before their very eyes, courtesy of a team of actors and a storyline that would have Poirot working those little grey cells. ENTERTAINMENT 19 TRIBUTE ACT
Wish ABBA could play at your wedding, but can’t quite stretch to it? There are plenty of uncannily accurate tribute acts around, so why not opt for the next best thing?
20 STRING QUARTET
Many of us have been Bridgerton obsessed since it hit our screens, and it’s easy to recreate that oh-so romantic Georgian atmosphere with a string quartet. While the show’s innovative soundtrack of modern hits make it a standout, this is something our modern day string musicians have been doing forever. Check out https://leonquartet.co.uk

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know
IT’S ONLY NATURAL Some photographers offer an engagement or prewedding shoot, but we’re camera shy and don’t know if it’s for us. What are the benefits? I love to offer pre-wedding shoots to couples that are shy about having their photographs taken. It makes the wedding flow so much better once you’ve experienced how your
photographer will shoot on the day. It really is a great way of making you feel at ease by showing you a few natural poses and having plenty of fun along the way. You’ll feel reassured that even the shyest and most introverted of people can have the most amazing photographs of their big day to treasure. David King, https://davidkingphotographer.co.uk

We know how important it is to have everyone special to you there on your big day and that includes your furry best friend! But everyone you’d trust to look after your dog is also at the wedding, so it’s understandable you don’t want them to feel like it’s their job to look after them. This is where a professional dog wedding chaperone service comes in. We’re experts in all things dog care, so whether you want your fur baby to have a starring role as ring bearer or flowergirl, be the surprise guest of honour, or just there for some magical photographic memories, we can help make the day one to remember for you and your dog. From training for their special role in the lead up to the big day, to dog taxi service, working with your photographer to capture those treasured moments, and even wedding night sleepovers; we work with you to create
HERE COMES THE GROOM LOUD ‘N’ PROUD We don’t want our ceremony to be the boring part of our day that everyone has to sit through in order to get to the party! How can we make it as fun-filled as the rest of the day to reflect our personalities?
74
As the groom I’d like my buttonhole to stand out from my groomsmen and be something special. Do you have any recommendations?
First and foremost, it’s important that you’re at the centre of everything from the very start to the very end. The experience should be unique to you and will always remain with you as one of the happiest memories of your lives. I believe in giving my couples choice when it comes to such an important part of the day. After all, the celebration starts with the ceremony, not after it! For example, I offer you the chance to opt for myself, as The Foxy Celebrant or as Maria Hurtz a devilish drag queen! Maria is available as part of the “Drag you up the aisle” package. This is your show, putting you both centre stage and we can do anything! To make the ceremony as fun-filled as you wish, you could dress up, lip-sync, or break out in a fierce dance routine. And don’t worry, if there are young people around, we can keep it PG too.
Whether it’s a big blousy peony, a classic carnation or a delicate bundle of foliage, buttonholes are an age old tradition at a wedding. Often, the groom and groomsmen, witnesses and parents of the bride all pin one on on the morning of the big day. Once everyone is in similar suits it’s nice to be able to stand out. Having a variety of flowers and leaves to create your buttonhole make it slightly more fancy and eye-catching. If you have quite a simple suit, using bright colours such as yellow craspedia balls alongside eucalyptus or striking blue thistles can really help the buttonhole to pop. Dried articles are something I always use. Not only are they visually interesting, they’re also hardy so there’s no risk of wilting on a hot day. Boutonnieres are becoming more of a talking point at weddings and can be created using almost anything to hand to suit your theme or venue. Autumn berries, extravagant feathers and even brass charms can all make you stand out from the crowd.

Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
DRY SPELL
Ruth says: First, determine whether your skin condition needs medical attention and seek medical advice if you’re concerned. Skincare isn’t a short-term fix. To achieve the results you want, a daily routine is essential for any skin type, in your case – combination skin (dry and oily). Look for products that are suitable for your specific needs and check for any ingredients you may be allergic to. Then follow these simple steps: ❤ Cleanse. If you’re wearing make-up and SPF, I’d do a double cleanse first with micellar water then with an oil or cleansing balm. ❤ Exfoliate. Use either a chemical (salicylic acid or fruit enzyme) or physical product such as a face scrub once or twice a week. ❤ Moisturise. Opt for a hydrating moisturiser such as Weleda Skin Food for dry and rough skin. Hyaluronic acid is particularly good for dehydrated skin as it holds a 1,000 times its own weight in water, which helps hydrate the skin and can reduce the appearance of fine lines. ❤ Sunscreen. Use a minimum of SPF30+ when using acids on your complexion such as Altruist.
COOL, CALM AND COVERED
My arms are the area I’m most self-conscious about so I’d love to have them covered, but at the same time my wedding is in the summer so I’m worried about being hot. Can you help me with any suggestions of how to get the best of both worlds? Vicky says: This is a common problem faced by many brides, but there are plenty of solutions when wedding dress shopping. It just depends on how you feel once trying on the gowns and the extent to which you wish to cover or disguise the tops of your arms. A trend we’ve seen emerge over the last few seasons is the Bardot or off-the-shoulder neckline. Designs like the Cinderella-inspired dress by Disney Fairy Tale Weddings, carefully place off-theshoulder straps just where brides generally want their arms covering. But if a strap isn’t enough, consider an illusion sleeve that will cover your arms just enough without causing you to overheat. Just a friendly warning though: some feel the lace on these sleeves draws too much attention to their least favourite area and prefer to look at accessories for coverage. Capes are becoming more and more popular, especially with those who want to modernise their bridal style. Being a summer wedding, a short cape is an ideal solution if you need something over your shoulders. And let’s not forget, a veil can also cover your arms if pulled a little over your shoulders. This will leave you feeling confident without guests realising you’ve purposely tried to cover them.

Travel goals
An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some…
T
here were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family. While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.
MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean 92
along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.
A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay. If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury. Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!
HONEYMOONS
ART AND CULTURE Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.
OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. With little stops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest – and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.
TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…
A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.
ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

Caribbean vibes Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand
A
s the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

ACCOMMODATION Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.
THE LANDINGS SPA The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.
ST. LUCIAN CUISINE You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).
EXCURSIONS If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!
FIVE STAR LUXURY If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. Go on, treat yourself !
