s we wave ta-ta and good riddance to 2020, I hope you all had the chance to raise a glass to 2021 with your loved ones, feeling the warmth of hope. While we still need to be careful to keep each other safe, I think there’s reason to look forward to the future. To all of you who’ve seen their wedding plans changing by the second of late, I’d like to virtually shake all of you by the hand. Don’t give in! Here at Your Kent Wedding, we don’t plan to shift in our resolutely optimistic celebration of everything wedding and we love taking you along for the ride. andra and Lyndon met online three years ago where they discovered a mutual love of cooking, walking, keeping fit and dogs. By 2019 the pair were discussing marriage plans and became engaged on Sandra’s birthday that year. Dreams of a fairytale castle wedding started to become a reality when they booked Lympne Castle for the big day. “Dating back to the 12th century, it has a delightful great hall with panelling, beams and Medieval windows. It was ideal for us,” Sandra says. The date was originally set for 24th April 2020 but, of course, Covid-19 had other ideas. The couple contacted the venue as soon as lockdown was announced and the team kindly accommodated a date change to September. At this time, guest lists were restricted to 30 so, Sandra says, “We reduced numbers to 24, meaning only our close family and friends were there. It was difficult uninviting guests, but everyone was incredibly understanding.” This is the story of the couple’s wonderful wedding day…

LOOKING THE PART The bride looked stunning in a Diane Legrand gown, style 7640 in champagne. “I loved this dress from the moment I tried it on,” she says. The look was completed with a pair of diamond earrings, a gift from Lyndon, and a matching necklace from her sister, Debra. Lyndon wore a navy suit paired with a silver and purple leaf waistcoat, purple ruche, and matching pocket square.

SETTING THE SCENE As guests arrived at Lympne Castle they were given a goodie bag filled with essentials for the day ahead. Sandra had been hard at work making face masks, which were included along with a bottle of hand sanitiser, water and an oat bar snack. The bride’s sister had also been crafting and created some handmade soap as a treat for everyone to take home. The colour palette for the day featured a rich Cadbury purple, so the bridal bouquet, buttonholes and venue flowers were created with the hue taking centre stage. The bride’s cousin made the big-day bake, also decorated with this vibrant shade. It also featured in the sashes that adorned the gold chiavari ceremony chairs.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Despite not being able to go ahead with the reception they’d planned, the weather was still kind in September and the couple were able to enjoy an al fresco celebration with the assembled nearest and dearest at St. Crispin Inn, Worth. Sandra explains, “The owners, Jason and Amy, were very kind in allowing us to utilize the pub garden that afternoon, and we had a small Caribbean-themed buffet.” The delicious menu included rice and peas, curried goat, escovitch fish, jerk chicken, and barbecue chicken. The couple headed down to Looe in Cornwall on honeymoon at the end of September with their fur children, dogs Bella and Teddy. “Lyndon went there as a child with his grandfather and has always wanted to go back. We both had a great time,” Sandra remembers.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS On the day, the challenges of the preceding months faded away and the couple felt nothing but complete happiness. Sandra says, “As it was a downsized wedding, we were able to spend more quality time with each other, as well as our select guests.” The highlight for Sandra was walking up the aisle and seeing Lyndon at the end, waiting for her. The groom is in agreement as his most memorable moment was seeing his love in her dress for the first time… “and the goat curry,” he adds! The newlyweds are keen to thank one person in particular for all their hard work in seeing the day come to fruition: wedding planner Blessing. “It wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without her. a wedding under normal circumstances, but during the pandemic with changing government guidance, it was horrendous. Blessing navigated us through these changes, worked with suppliers and was calm and professional throughout,” Sandra explains.

THAT’S NOT ALL FOLKS! Sandra says, “While we were disappointed not to have the full wedding we’d envisaged, it was more important that we, our guests and others supporting us stayed safe and well by following the government’s guidance. Lyndon and I spent a lot of time reflecting on our lives during lockdown and made some major decisions regarding our future together. We gained a new perspective and concluded that getting married was important to us. We’ll always be part of history in that we had a Covid wedding, and our day is one good thing that happened in 2020. “My advice to other couples facing a similar situation would be to focus on what’s important to you as a couple and in these new times, be as flexible as possible.” Happily, the newlyweds are planning a further wedding celebration on the first anniversary of their original big day, 24th April 2021. The bride has the excellent idea of having her dress altered into an evening gown for the occasion.

hristmas is Sarah and Sam’s favourite time of year, so it was only fitting that Sam should seize the opportunity and propose to Sarah in front of their tree. We’re sure it was the best Christmas present she could ever have imagined. She was certainly surprised, and of course, said “yes.” The couple were attracted to the red brick work and rustic feel of Westerham Golf Club, and chose it as the venue for their big day on 16th November. Our table plan was made from a decorative mirror and kraft paper to give it a rustic feel. The place names and table numbers were also made form kraft paper to tie everything together.

Each table was decorated with a hurricane vase containing a candle and surrounded by a wreath of burgundy and white flowers. Favours were key bottle openers and we attached a kraft paper note to each one with twine.

ayley and Tom met at school, but not as kids, as teachers! Both working as SEN educators, they became best friends, and as Hayley says, “Who better to fall in love with than your partner in crime?” Tom proposed in February 2019 at The Ferry House. He booked a surprise meal and selected a bespoke menu catering to Hayley’s dietary requirements. She says, “As it was so close to Valentine’s Day, I’d assumed the treat was to celebrate this event. Little did I know what Tom had up his sleeve! The ring he surprised me with was better than anything I could have chosen for myself.” Since Hayley had commented during their engagement meal what a lovely place The Ferry House would be to get married, even before she realised she’d soon be looking for a venue herself, this seemed like the ideal location for their big day. “It felt perfect, cosy, intimate and very homely,” she explains. Read on as the bride shares her account of their wonderful wedding day… Both of us felt nervous, but excited. Thanks to the amazing staff at The Ferry House, we didn’t have to worry about anything on the day. It was the best day of our lives.

My gown had a lace bodice with straps and a floaty skirt. I paired it with wine-red velvet heels, a floral headband and a personalised silver necklace complete with our initials. 54

We made the wedding favours ourselves, which were glass bottles filled with olive oil and a rosemary cutting.

The place names were also made from wood, and the table numbers were pictures of our dogs, taken by our wedding photographer, Emma Migden. The centrepieces were log slices topped with flowers.

I booked a VW Camper to take Tom to the venue as a surprise for him.

Tom wore a grey suit with a black waistcoat, white shirt and burnt-orange tie. The groomsmen wore the same, and the groom stood out with his protea buttonhole. 55 ď ľ

Our guests were served canapés of honey coated sausages, fishcakes with aioli, and goats cheese tarts with balsamic pearls. Then later we enjoyed a wedding breakfast of apple and parsnip soup, followed by pork belly and mash, or butternut squash risotto, finished with a sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The Ferry House’s catering was amazing and they were able to provide me with a different starter due to food intolerances.

Our bridesmaid wore a lace-insert pleated maxi dress in oxblood.

We went to Reykjavkik, Iceland, for four days for our honeymoon. It was somewhere that had been on both of our bucket lists before we’d even started dating. We enjoyed every second of the time we spent there, particularly the blue lagoon, which was phenomenal.

Violinist Cristinel Bacanau played during the ceremony, wedding breakfast and our first dance. He was a hit with guests and some have even contacted us since to get his contact details. His performance was a real highlight.

At points during the day you wouldn’t even have known our photographer was there. When the posed photos were happening, she was completely clear and understanding of what was needed.

nspired by Eliza Jane Howell’s Lalique dress, make-up artist Kerry-Ann Wells set out to create this statement styled shoot. She explains, “It’s so eye-catching and would make any bride feel truly amazing. I could imagine anyone falling in love with its unique style, complete with beautiful regal jewel tones for a truly lavish wedding.” Taking the gown’s incredible hues as their colour palette, Kerry and the team created a wedding day style enough to make anyone feel proud as a peacock. The tables are dressed in green, purple and gold hues, with contrasting colour pops coming from the hot pink and orange blooms in the stunning floral designs by Flowers by Donna. Kerry’s make-up look for model Cathy is exciting, yet still reflective of that romantic bridal feel, while hair stylist Tarryn brought the look together with sophisticated curls. There’s detail at every turn, even in the big-day bake where Danielle from Bespoke Bakes incorporated the moodboard colours into the ombre-effect icing and floated a tier to give the impression of a peacock’s shape and nature. So, enjoy – there’s nothing like a bit of opulence to lift the spirits!

This was the image behind this stunning local shoot blending the iconic style of popular TV show Peaky Blinders, with the romanticism and secrecy of an elopement wedding. “It was a great opportunity to experiment with and highlight different bridal, bridesmaid and menswear looks,” says shoot coordinator Natasha from Matchimony. I’d recommend you aim to enlist as many local businesses as possible, as they’ll know the area like the back of their hand and will be able to spend plenty of time with you to make sure you get the day of your dreams. The best thing about outdoor weddings is that there’s little to no red tape, so there are no limits to your creativity. “Most importantly, try to remember it’s not just a big party, it’s your wedding day and all about the commitment the pair of you are making. I find some people lose sight of that. Don’t make your guest list too big, just because you can. You probably won’t have seen some of your loved ones for a while so you want to make sure there’s time to chat to everyone properly.”

What we love most about outdoor weddings is the blank canvas, literally, they offer. The sky’s the limit when it comes to creativity, but whether you’re hosting your whole day al fresco or just the ceremony, there’s one thing stylists agree on: an au naturel look is the way forward. Laurie Edwards from Chic Weds explains: “From woodlands to gardens there’s something so romantic about getting married outside with natural elements creating a perfect backdrop for you to enhance with additional décor and finishing touches. “For woodland weddings opt for natural décor such as a moongate adorned with foliage and decorated at the base with moss and lanterns. If your venue has a gazebo or pergola to get married under, add a flower arch to create a gorgeous backdrop for photographs. “Even if you’re not hosting your entire day in the great outdoors, don’t forget to decorate an outside space too – it makes for a great photo opportunity with foliage and fairylights bringing that twinkly magic. “With the great British weather being a little unpredictable at times, make sure you discuss styling options with your florist or venue stylist that can be easily transferred inside at the last minute. Most florists will make large arrangements and arches when they arrive at your venue, so they should be able to move displays inside if needed.” If your chosen cover for the day is a traditional marquee or a quirky tipi, bringing the outside in is a stunning and fitting styling choice. Elizabeth Morgan of Bizzy Lizzy Flowers says: “Add details such as foliage, a flower or some herbs to place settings, complementing tableware and fabrics. Work with your surroundings and utilise any outdoor features such as a gazebo, tree canopy, plantings and backdrop. Go bold in your colour palette or textures, from greenery to dried grasses, which are so effective in the sunlight and in a gentle breeze. Think also about fragrance: petals and herbs. You could even take cuttings from family and friends’ gardens to incorporate and personalise the space. “Consider also the season you make your vows. Your florist can advise you as to what’s in bloom and utilise local growers to combine florals and foliage to work in your outdoor space. You can even highlight displays with greenery, branches or common planting matched to your setting and time of year.” With such a vast space to fill, you’ll undoubtedly want to come up with ways to make the most of your budget, Elizabeth has some suggestions: “Group florals in multiple vases, perhaps even hang florals and trailing foliage. You could also hire your vases, as a cost-effective way to create a look and colour scheme for your tables. Add fabrics and some string lighting to candles for a warm and welcoming feel. “Before you do anything though, start by creating a visual plan with your florist. Give them the fullest picture of how you want your seating to look and allow for plenty of creativity, fun and quirky ways to make the overall look uniquely yours.”

No doubt, there’s a lot to think about, but believe us when we say the final outcome, when all of your hard work pays off, is worth every second spent drowning in wedmin. We leave you now with a final checklist of points to think about helping to ensure a smooth and stress-free day, with memories that will last a lifetime. ❏ Think carefully about the type of cover you want to reflect the style of your day. There’s more choice than you might expect from marquees to tipis, sailcloth tents to stretch tents. And do you need bell tents for on-site camping? ❏ Work with your structure’s supplier to decide where to pitch it. They’ll be able to advise you on factors such as the wind, the best view and accessibility. ❏ Formulate a plan for the flow of your day from ceremony, to reception, to evening bash. Go chic and elegant with chivari chairs or truly rustic with hay bales. ❏ Lighting is key from both a practicality standpoint as well as ambience. Festoon lighting looks fabulous strung in trees or illuminating a walkway, and fairylights create a magical and warm atmosphere in the tent. ❏ Where will your power be coming from? An established al fresco venue will likely have systems in place, but if you’ve gone right off the beaten track, you might need a generator. ❏ What’s your sustainability plan? Take only photographs and leave only footprints. ❏ It’s a good idea to appoint someone to be the point of contact for your suppliers on the day, leaving you to concentrate on getting ready. 73

aura from Xyris Botanicals and photographer Sammy Tayler were having a chat about their wedding businesses and how Covid-19 had affected them both, when the idea for this shoot was born. “She was telling me about all the beautiful flowers growing in her garden, originally meant for weddings in June. Given the mass of time and effort she puts into growing everything herself, this seemed like such a waste to me,” Sammy explains. So, the pair got to thinking about how they could make the most of these beautiful blooms, and decided to create this styled shoot. Next on board was great friend Roxanne from The Little Wedding Warehouse, who suggested Elmley Nature Reserve as the location, with it’s gorgeous black barn the perfect backdrop to pack a punch. “Being strong minded female business owners, girly pinks and a soft cutesy theme wasn’t really what we wanted to achieve,” Sammy says. From sassy vibrant floral displays, crafted diamond arches and a bright neon sign, the vision was easy to picture. The result is a real testament to the collaborative efforts of these talented Kent-based suppliers, and we don’t think it could have gone better. “This was one of our first shoots after lockdown, and we were all over the moon to be creative again. In fact, we were probably all feeling a little ‘drunk in love’ ourselves,” Sammy laughs. 77 

Practice posing and smiley faces with the flowergirls to keep them entertained and photo ready. Assign a dedicated person to look after them, and ensure that they’re never bored by providing easy go-to activities, such as sticker books and wedding specific colouring packs for those times when there’s likely to be some waiting around. On your wedding day you’ll want to be surrounded by people you love and trust. So, when choosing your photographer your priority is, of course, to find one whose style you like, but it’s also important that your personalities gel. You need to make sure you feel comfortable with them. They should understand you, as well as your likes and dislikes, so that on the day they can blend in with your guests, allowing you to forget they’re even there. If you’re anxious, very often your photographer will suggest a rehearsal photoshoot around a month before your big day. This will usually take place at your venue, enabling you to chat about where you want to have shots captured on the day. We’d like our wedding bands to be particularly meaningful and personal. What can you suggest? Firstly, if you opt for ready-made wedding bands, why not add some engraving to the inside – possibly your wedding date, or perhaps some words that hold particular meaning to you both? Alternatively, you have the option to design your own wedding rings together. This makes them unique and you can create matching his and hers designs, or have them different yet complementary. What’s more, if you have an unusually shaped engagement ring, or one where a straight band won’t fit snuggly against it, you could have a bespoke wedding band shaped to fit like a glove. As a bespoke jeweller, we often melt down sentimental gold pieces and hand make one-off wedding rings for our couples. You can also choose for your gold to be melted and added to the inside of your bands, so that only you know it’s there. Equally, if you have existing precious stones, you can also have them incorporated into the design. Options such as these breathe new life into sentimental jewellery and make your new items even more meaningful.

I’m really keen for my dress to reflect my personality and our day’s relaxed vibe. What can you suggest? It sounds like you’ll want your shopping experience to be as relaxed as the atmosphere of your big day, so my top tip to begin with is to do some research into which boutiques stock your style of dress, make appointments with two or three and take just a couple of guests with you. There seems to be a trend toward brides bringing large groups of friends and family with them to try on dresses, which can be unproductive, overwhelming and best avoided. When you arrive for your bridal boutique appointment the consultant will start by asking you some questions about your big day. For example, based on what you’ve told me already I’d be keen to know what sort of venue you’ve booked and how you’ll be styling it. I should imagine your vision features a boho vibe complete with firepits, hay bales and fairylights. In which case, you’re sure to want to move freely on the day, without being restricted by an overwhelming dress. We can’t decide whether we need a video of our wedding as well as photographs. What would you say are the main benefits to having a video as well? You’ve spent so long planning every minute detail of your wedding day, making sure it’s the most special day of your life and that everyone has a fantastic time. But, once it’s all over your memories might be a little blurry, mainly because you’ll have had such an amazing time it’ll all have passed in a flash. We find that nothing conveys the mood and atmosphere of the day as much as a film. A videographer will capture your personal story and the expressions of your guests as they witness the all the important moments as they unfold. They’ll intimately record your exchange of vows, the giving and receiving of rings, and the whole mood of the day. As newlyweds, you’ll be the centre of attention, chatting to friends and relatives, listening to the speeches and having lots of fun. However, in the midst of experiencing this new found celebrity status you might miss certain moments, with others fading from your recollection. Kent’s beauty professionals offer advice on looking your big-day best

My lips get dry and cracked in the winter. What’s your advice on the best way to combat this so as not to ruin the look of my lipstick?

Can you suggest a showstopping make-up look for my fabulous winter wedding?

Ruth says: First things first – avoid licking your lips, as this will irritate and dry them out even more. You’ll then need to gently exfoliate them. Make sure they’re clean and free of any make-up before you start. Then, why not try making your own lip scrub? Simply combine 1tsp of coconut oil, 2tsp of sugar and 1tsp of honey. If you don’t have coconut oil to hand, you could substitute it with another natural oil such as almond, olive or jojoba. Another option is to use a new, clean, dry toothbrush, which has soft to medium bristles, with lip balm. Take care when using this method as the skin on your lips is sensitive and contains a lot of nerves. If it hurts then stop! The next step is to nourish and repair the natural moisture barrier. Use a balm containing shea butter or lanoline. Clarins Hydra-Essential range and the brand’s Natural Lip Perfector are favourites of mine. Also, look out for a product that will protect the lips with an SPF. For example, The Bobbi Brown Lip Balm has an SPF of 15. Other steps you can take to prevent dry lips include humidifying the air in your bedroom and using a scarf or mask to protect them in windy or cold weather.

Claire says: To achieve this year’s winter look a rose smoky eye, both bold and elegant, is a must. Not forgetting those glamorous strip lashes. For the lips I’d recommend a soft rose or natural hue with a similar blush, and remember to use highlighter sparingly to enhance the look. I love Airbase’s eyeshadow palettes; they offer amazing coverage that’s easy to blend and looks stunning. Eye make-up can enhance your features and change the whole impression. Especially since this year hasn’t been the best, it’s so important that you feel comfortable with how you look on your big day. Be sure to have a trial to ensure you’re happy with your chosen make-up artist. Always ask them whatever questions you have to ensure you get exactly what you want. They have the experience to see that your make-up not only enhances your natural looks but also blends well with your overall colour palette.
