New year, new start, new adventures!

51

I

just love the feeling of a fresh new year. Setting those goals for the year ahead and looking forward with excitement and positivity rather than back over what a year it’s been. That feeling very much reminds me of the day after our wedding. Starting afresh as Mr and Mrs, embarking on our new life as a married couple and wondering what adventures it’d bring. I often set new year resolutions that I vow to stick to (and I do keep to them… for at least a few weeks anyway!). Promising to stick to something also reflects your wedding vows – although the difference is, you do keep to those because that bond’s slightly more meaningful than keeping away from chocolate right? That one lasts a long and happy lifetime. So, what will 2022 bring? Hopefully weddings galore, an awful lot of love, laughter and heaps of fun! You might be tying the knot soon or just starting on your planning journey. Either way, this issue is sure to help you bring your dreams to life! We have our pick of gorgeous venues from page 19, local pros share their top planning tips on page 79 and enhance every inch of your venue with the styling feature on page 59. For the fashionistas out there, our Vogue-inspired shoot on page 55 will be right up your street and if you love bold and bright head to page 51 for an abundance of cultural fusion in our Africa-inspired shoot. If all of that isn’t enough, check out our gorgeous real weddings on pages 31, 36 and 45.

Incorporate your culture into your day with style.

ROSEWOOD LONDON

020 7781 8888 | www.rosewoodhotels.com

Sitting in the heart of the City, surrounded by 17th-century spires and modern glass towers, this Grade I listed hotel has nine restaurants, 250 bedrooms, a range of grooming services and a member’s club. Set in the former Midland Bank building, The Ned was designed by Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens in 1924, whose style blended classical and modern elements. The faded glamour of a 1930s transatlantic ocean liner was the starting point for the interiors, with designers also trawling through the bank’s archives to find out what the building looked like in its heyday. Weddings at The Ned take place on the historic sixth floor. Its six rooms and two outdoor terraces with incredible city vistas can host parties of up to 200 people. Couples can hire the whole floor exclusively for groups of 80 guests and more. Most ceremonies take place in The Saloon, which is dominated by an 18thcentury chandelier, an ornate chalk frieze and a restored parquet floor. Receptions are held in The Tapestry Room for large parties of up to 140 loved ones, while more intimate celebrations are suited to the RWB Room. For weddings upwards of 50 guests, the venue offers free menu tastings and an overnight stay for the newlyweds. Some packages include free use of the Princes Dome on the roof for a delicious breakfast with guests the next day.

With the feel of a stylish London residence, this hotel houses 262 rooms and 44 suites. Following an £85 million renovation to the 1914 Edwardian Belle Époque building, the original features were restored by an expert team of craftsmen, including the magnificent Grade II listed frontage and dome. Guests enter via a grand carriageway leading into a distinctive courtyard. Outside, The Terrace evokes an intimate English country garden. The Grand Ballroom is an expansive space offering refined style under glittering chandeliers. Two dramatic staircases lead to a balcony overlooking the Grand Ballroom’s spectacular Foyer – an extraordinary setting in itself. The Living Room is a more intimate option and features an exclusive lounge area and large windows flooding the space with light. With an elegant, residential style, it’s perfect for an intimate gathering and post-wedding brunch. The dedicated team of wedding specialists are passionate about creating the most memorable experiences. They’re wellversed in both contemporary styles and classic British traditions. 29

Mel and Abs’ intimate day was simply stunning with its neutral colour palette and floral tones Images courtesy of Lynn Shapiro Photography

hen it came to Mel spotting Abs, never was a profile picture more important! “We matched on the dating app Bumble while I was in my penultimate year at Birmingham University and Abs was working in London. I clearly recall thinking he looked like marriage material from his profile pictures,” Mel tells us. “We met after a couple of weeks of chatting and our conversations flowed so easily as though we’d known each other for years.” Abs’ parents lived near Mel so he visited regularly and they worked through a long-distance relationship for two years until Mel finished medical school and they moved in together. The proposal was months in the making and it was something special as Abs tells us. “I sent Mel out to brunch with her friends. Whilst she was there, I sent her a video of our first conversations on Bumble with an invitation to return home,” he shares. “I’d

decorated our flat with the help of a friend with candles, rose petals and tulips and gave her a speech about how wonderful she is before asking her to marry me in Hindi, Farsi and English,” he adds. Abs took Mel to her favourite Italian for dinner and then on to a bar he’d rented out for the evening for a surprise party with 60 of their friends. “The party was planned for months before the proposal to make sure everyone could attend so whatever happened we were getting engaged that day!” he says. The duo dreamed of a large Indian wedding but due to the pandemic they planned something much smaller on their original wedding date to avoid postponing it completely. “We wanted an intimate, relaxed ceremony and found the perfect setting for it. Everything came together so elegantly on the day,” Mel recalls. Here, she shares all the details… 31

Through recommendation, I found Faye and Alice, local hair and make-up artists respectively who helped bring the whole look together.

I opted for a neutral outfit to respect both sides of our Persian and Indian cultures. The light sage dress with delicate pink lace flowers was the perfect choic e.

The dress was cool, comfortable and gorgeously bohemian and complemented Abs’ pink suit so well. I wore a dried flower crown and ivory veil to finish the look.

Interestingly, Abs picked his dusty pink suit before I found my dress! It was a bold choice, but it looked great.

Our venue was an empty shell and Love to Create provided all the furniture, styling elements and floral displays. I fell in love with the look, it excee ded all of my boho-wedding expectations. 32

REAL WEDDINGS

The ceremony room had a deep purple carpet that I feared would clash with the rest of the styling, but the deep purple/raspberry tones were mixed into our neutral colour scheme and it worked beautifully.

We used deep purple tones in the tapered candl es and stationery at the wedding breakfast. It all came together so elegantly on the day.

Abs and the groomsmen wore buttonholes that were made of dried flowers to co-ordinate with my bouquet.

Our Cutter & Squidge Roses in Bloom cake suited the look of our day perfectly.

I adored my bridal bouquet. Our florist took great care in the detail by mixing fresh and dried flowers and even adding mint sprigs that smelled divine.

Love on THE SLOPES

Rosie and Ollie shared their stunning ski-themed nuptials with loved ones at Kew Gardens Images courtesy of Philippa Gedge

REAL WEDDINGS

W

ith a shared love of skiing, Rosie and Ollie’s pistes crossed in 2008, on a ski season in Whistler, Canada. “We both went out there to teach kids to ski with thirty other like-minded Brits,” says Rosie. “We had a lot in common. Our shared sense of humour, laid back nature and appetite for travel and we still do!” she shares. Ten happy years later Ollie proposed. “We went back Whistler where it all began on our ten-year anniversary of being together. It was a lovely surprise,” Rosie recalls.

NATURAL BEAUTY The venue was an easy choice for Rosie and Ollie. “Living in London you appreciate areas of natural beauty. We knew Kew Gardens well as we live in South London and when we were shown around we were blown away it’s just stunning,” Rosie says. “The ceremony was extra special as the sun came out in full force and was shining through the large glass windows of the Nash Conservatory as we said our vows.” The drinks reception was held in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. “This is a glass labyrinth leading you through a series of fascinating ecosystems. It felt really special and different,” she adds.

DRESSING THE PART Rosie wore an elegant bespoke design by Louise Selby that was accessorised with a removal floral jacket that she took off for the evening celebrations. Her hair was loosely curled and swept back from her face and she finished the look with a floorlength veil and crystal Steve Madden shoes. Their bridesmaids looked gorgeous in dove grey dresses with cowl back detailing that complemented the look of the groom and groomsmen. Ollie opted for a 3-piece navy suit and accessorised with a light grey waistcoat and burgundy tie

FLORAL EXTRAVAGANZA The bouquets were primarily white with touches of powder blue and blush. “We added silvery foliage and satin ribbon round the stem and included snapdragons, four season roses, dorchester roses, snowberries and dahlias. They looked amazing we were so pleased with them,” says Rosie. Similar flowers were used throughout the venue. For the ceremony, four pedestal arrangements of blooms complementing the bouquets framed the alter and pillar candles in silver storm lanterns lined the aisle. For the centrepieces, tall dramatic pedestal displays were mixed with lower arrangements using the flowers from the ceremony and cracked silver candles were placed around them. “To add an extra element to the room, we chose an amber leaf uplight on the ceiling that switched to purple for the dancing post dinner. It looked beautiful as the sun went down,” Rosie recalls.

APRES-SKI The table plan was a ski piste map of Whistler and the theme continued throughout. “Our cake was in the shape of Whistler mountain with Ollie and I on top sat in a clever suspended cable car. We were blown away by it,” Rosie shares. Place names were adorned with snowflakes and mountains and the table names were a selection of the duos favourite ski runs… Pruned Paradise, Rock n’ Roll, Bear Paw, Pakalolo, Goats Gully, Wild Card, Peak to Creek, Twist and Shout, Whiskey Jack, Symphony, 7th Heaven, Frog Hollow, Spanky’s Ladder. 37

REAL WEDDINGS

Guests were treated to a ski-shot of limoncello that the couple designed on an actual ski, “It allowed three people to do the shot in unison at the bar which was a big hit,” she says.

PARTY TIME With a nod to Rosie’s love of sweets, a pick n’ mix help yourself sweet station went down a storm and a polaroid camera was readily available for friends and family to go wild with to fill the guest book with happy memories from the day. Throughout the evening, the band, Pandora’s Jukebox, created the party atmosphere. “They were a big focus of the entertainment as they were a nine-piece band that we’d seen perform at another wedding. They didn’t disappoint and their act included being mobile and coming out onto the dancefloor to perform certain songs and some fun medleys. The dancefloor was packed throughout the evening!” Rosie says. After two previous postponed wedding dates due to Covid, the couple finally got to have the day of their dreams. “We were riding a wave all day, it was exactly how we’d hoped. We loved every minute.”

REAL WEDDINGS

A

helping HAND

Florals, creativity and a whole lot of fun was at the heart of Raabia and Alex’s celebrations Images courtesy of Kristian Leven Photography

R

aabia and Alex met in 2016, at the law firm that they both worked at. “I’d just joined as a paralegal and Alex asked for my help with some documents, which I messed up. Luckily, my poor file management was no barrier to romance,” Raabia shares. They got chatting at the pub after work one evening and never really stopped from that point onwards. “We had so much in common and discovered a mutual love of cheese, comedies and craft beer,” she says.

Alex proposed in their home in Hackney on a rainy Tuesday during lockdown. “He sent me away to Ikea and transformed our home with candles and post it notes of sweet messages and inside jokes. It was a beautiful fire-risk!” It was no surprise as the nearlyweds had already chosen their venue, but Alex made it incredibly special, nonetheless. Here, Raabia tells us more about their day…

45

I accessorised with a floorlength veil, an embellished headband and simple gold jewellery that my grandmother had bought for me.

I wore a beautiful lace gown from Brides Do Good. They are a social enterprise working to reduce waist in the wedding dress industry and their profits fund educational projects to end child marriage. The bridesmaids wore pale blue skirts and white tops in different styles that they chose. I really wanted my bridesmaids to feel comfortable and beautiful on the day, and to be able to wear the outfits again.

Alex opted for a grey three-piece and bold floral tie and his groomsmen and women wore matching grey tones with floral accents.

We wanted a large and airy space that we could fill with beautiful flowers and Trinity Buoy Wharf met all our needs and more. It’s a beautiful warehouse space by the river overlooking the Millennium Dome and the City. 46

The venue provided a privacy that’s rare to find in London. Not to mention, it has a lighthouse where you can have a gorgeous couple’s photoshoot.

REAL WEDDINGS

Our caterers and florists completely transformed the space and the venue provided some lovely furniture and indoor plants.

The ceremony was so heartfelt and the speeches were a real highlight for us.

The aisle was lined with stem vases, which were later used to decorate the tables.

Our florists made the wonderful suggestion of displaying a flower cloud for us to be married under. The floral theme was carried through to the cake and deserts which were iced with orange and pink flowers.

Our party favours included floral temporary tattoos, flower seeds and colourful soaps.

We knew we wanted lots of bright flowers decorating the space.

47

Our bouquets were brimming with vibrant flowers.

Our wooden table plan complemented the décor perfectly.

We wanted lots of interaction and fun so we had a guestbook table with polaroid cameras so friends and family could snap a photo and stick in the book throughout the day.

During the evening, the band really filled the dancefloor they were brilliant.

Alex’s speech was particularly memorable as it ended with a video from my family all around the world who unfortunately couldn’t travel to London because of Covid. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

All of our suppliers, family and the bridal party went above and beyond to make it the happiest day of our lives.

enneh Whittaker of JW Planners worked with Essential Events London and together gathered a team of local suppliers to create their Africa-inspired vision. “We wanted to showcase a vibrant cultural fusion for couples that want to incorporate their culture into their big day in a modern and stylish way,” Jenneh explains. African chic was brought to life with a blend of earthy tones and textures combined with bright Ankara prints and bold colours that truly embody Africa. “The florals and fabric selection were very important as we wanted the fabric to complement the textures and palette of the shoot as well as be a statement feature,” she says. The concept continued through the bride and groom’s styling with the rich, bold shades and stunning accessories. “Overall, we believe that this is a beautiful cultural fusion that would inspire brides and grooms who want to incorporate their heritage into their day. It’s a celebration of love and the richness of West African culture and beyond,” says Jenneh. 51

ophie Tyler of A Lovers Thread worked with a small but fierce team of wedding creatives to craft this intimate London elopement shoot. “We wanted to strike a playful, contemporary note with our styling, using a colour palette of black, red, and tonal shades of nude and pink,” she explains. The bridalwear by A Lover’s Thread is a combination of vintage pieces and modern embellishments, to create bespoke looks that bring together old and new. “The venue, Gazelli House, is a holistic skincare and treatment studio in the heart of Chelsea, so we wanted this celebration to feel natural and beautiful both in style and substance - fabulous, inside and out,” she says. The balloons were eco-friendly, the ingredients of the grazing table all locally sourced and the desserts and cakes were all vegan. Sophie and the team made sure that every element was in some way a homage to the talents of small businesses. “This day was all about celebrating in a mindful way, being present with a small group of loved ones, and enjoying the good, wholesome luxuries of life. We believe 2022 is going to be the year of meaningful maximalism in the wedding industry, and we’re here for it,” she shares. 55

VENUE STYLING

Style every inch of your venue with this top advice

W

hether your venue’s a blank canvas for you to go wild or perfectly styled and just needing your personal touches, our local pros have got it covered right here!

TOBY ROBERTS, TBR FLORAL DESIGN www.tbrfloraldesign.co.uk

Floral arches… These look amazing as a backdrop for your ceremony. This arch was bespoke and matched the high table displays that created an aisle runner. The perspex stands made it look like the vases were floating. The aisle runners doubled up as table centrepieces.

Bring the outside in… If your room’s quite empty but with greenery outside, bring the outside in with foliage. Here, we created tree-like centrepieces packed with roses, bases filled with fresh fruit and added trailing ivy garlands around the pillars too.

One large focal point… If your tables are placed around a central point, be sure to dress it! Here we used a large blossom tree and brought in plants and grasses to create an oasis feel in the marquee.

Darker venues… Use uplighters and add colour to change the feel of your venue. Use candlelight as much as possible – I always encourage using tea lights, floating candles and pillar candles in lanterns to create that cosy, romantic ambience.

Centrepieces… A mixture of high and low displays works well. Make sure that whatever you choose doesn’t obstruct your guest’s views. If your tables are laid out banquet style, place flowers in between where people sit so it’s not directly in front of their faces.

Framing the top table… This is the biggest focal point of your venue, where most pictures are taken by guests. Use low flowers so the bridal party aren’t hidden and to create impact, add arrangements above and in front of the table. 59

RUTH DONOGHUE-EVANS, MIMI FLEUR www.mimifleur.co.uk

Mimi Fleur images courtesy of http://fleurchallisphotography.com

Ceiling statements… If you want your venue styling to stand out, be sure to include some eye-catching floral ceiling statements. We love installing these arrangements. You can include clouds of dried flowers, bunches of grasses, garlands of fresh or dried hops, seasonal branches, or classical greenery like moody ivy, scented eucalyptus, and minimal vines. For a more boho look, suspend potted plants in cradles that might include textured succulents and lacey ferns, giving a home-from-home vibe. These plants can either be hired in or bought and then given as post-wedding gifts, which is an easy way to find a wedding budget saving. At Mimi Fleur, we love being given a brief to go big and bold and to create a ‘romantic floral en-masse’, venue permitting. Depending on the time of the year, couples can go wildly colourful or include elegant dripping roses or upside-down single tulip stems. Floral hanging installations transform the guests’ focal point and make for those strike-a-pose photo opportunities. Aerial focal points to consider include above the ceremony, top table and table plan but also above the dance floor for that perfect first dance.

Staircase designs… A staircase is a perfect way to make a stunning entrance. Adding florals to simple handrails immediately upgrades the look and feel of your event and brings glamour on its reveal. You can create designs with greenery, lush florals and simple candle and petals arrangements. The combinations are endless.

POPULAR FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE… • Ranunculas - Italian Ranunculi is widely available in the UK. A papery gorgeous flower in a wide variety of colour. • Roses – the symbol of love. • Peony - One of the most popular for bridal flowers in an abundance of colours, and with a beautiful fragrance.

Candle decor… Decorating with candles makes a beautiful and warm atmosphere and if your venue allows it, naked flames create a mysterious and uber glamourous finish to your floral designs. LED candles are an alternative and there are very real and authentic candle varieties available. Candles create accent lighting and you can use various styles – floating, taper, hanging candles, tealights, candle sticks and candelabras. www.boatengphotographic.com

www.hiramtrillo.com

Aisle and chair decor… The aisle is such a special area of your wedding and simple décor elevates it. Chair decorations also frame your aisle. Line your aisle with petals, flowers and candles for that wow-factor.

Dressing a mantlepiece… This creates a beautiful focal area. From adorning with simple greenery, to an abundance of candles adding beauty and elegance, to a full-on large statement floral mantel design.

BEVERLEY WILSON, BEVERLEY WILSON FLOWERS www.beverleywilson.com

Centrepieces… A venue with tall ceilings could accommodate large centrepieces and a mix of high and low arrangements brings variety and interest to your tables. Glass vases and stands, are perfect and don’t restrict vision. Incorporate candelabras, cylinder candle vases and metal stands to add drama and luxury. Banquet and long tables lend themselves to table runner styles, with either tall centrepieces, foliage and flower runners, or an abundance of small bud vases filled with flowers along the entire length of the table.

• Lisianthus - Rose like and delicate, a must for bridal bouquets. • Toffee and cappuccino tone flowers. • Pampus gras and dried flowers – trendy and reusable. • Eucalyptus - A popular foliage, with a gorgeous scent, very inexpensive and economical. 61

Beauty

Q&A

Look the best version of you with our expert advice RESET AND RESTORE Q – Planning a wedding can be quite stressful. What advice can you give me to make sure that my body and mind are restored in the run up to our big day? Take some time out every day – even if it’s just half an hour – to reset and restore your mind. Do something that makes YOU happy, after all, this is all about you! Regardless of your favourite way to relax and decompress, make sure you’re doing it and doing it often. Light a candle, meditate, book a relaxing treatment, and set aside a few moments to unwind. Whatever brings you joy and relaxation, embrace it and make it a top priority. Start each morning saying powerful statements out loud that are positive and selfencouraging. It can be anything from “I am calm, focused and present,” to “every day I feel more and more relaxed about planning my wedding”. These sentences are what you want to feel, stated in the present tense. Start to acknowledge your own beauty and that will help you to feel strong and beautiful both inside and out ready for your big day. Sarah Jones St John | Grey Wolfe https://greywolfe.co.uk

A HELPING HAND Q – My nails are usually quite short, but I want to go all out for our wedding. Can you give me some bridal nail inspiration? The best way to prepare and get those hands wedding-ready, is to have a course of luxury manicures. The difference between a luxury manicure and a classic manicure is that the whole hand is treated and pampered. Not only are we improving the nails, but we’re also making the hands look soft and moisturised. This would consist of a three-weekly treatment where nails are cut and filed to your desired shape and length, dry or stray bits of cuticles will be pushed back and removed and your hands be exfoliated and massaged with top quality products. Then the fun part is to try different colours and designs. By having a course of treatments you’ll be able test out different styles. A natural sparkly French manicure always looks beautiful with some subtle nail art, or why not go all out and add diamonds for that finishing touch or opt for a bright shade to make your hands stand out? If you’re wanting to add length, you could also have acrylic nail extensions. Acrylic gives strength so you can be sure they won’t break on your honeymoon. Angel Gaffney | Paint Nails London | www.paintnailslondon.co.uk

BRIGHT EYES Q – How can I look after my skin to make sure I have the bridal glow? The lead up to the big day is always super hectic. Remedy tired eyes with a good eye cream that can de-puff and brighten the area. This is included in the Recovery + AntiFatigue Rehab Orveda Facial at Kalon Parlour, which is a must before your wedding. It’ll recover your skin from short nights and stress with the incorporation of a cryo massage to relieve the eyes. With all the running around it’ll be hard to remain hydrated and your skin subsequently suffers from this. Rehydrate yourself with a HydraFacial for instantly glowing, smooth and clean skin. This facial removes all debris and dead cells whilst simultaneously delivering various serums formulated to address skin concerns. Our Senior Aesthetician at Kalon Parlour offers complimentary skin consultations to better tailor the experience. Once finished you can unwind in our relaxation zone, where you can indulge in a nutritious herbal tea before heading out to face the day ahead. MAISON CRIVELLI IRIS MALIKHÂN £75 (30ml), £170 (100ml) www.selfridges.com “It didn’t take me long to completely fall in love with this perfume. Natural remedies such as Together Health’s Night Time Marine Magnesium Complex (£12.99, www.togetherhealth.co.uk) can also be hugely beneficial. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). The time to take care of our planet is well overdue, so when your Otis Batterbee brushes are worn and in need of replacement, simply send them back to the brand’s HQ where every element will be recycled. The brand has recently launched some new luxurious make-up brush collections, which are a great place to get you started. EDITOR LOVES

We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

UPLIFTED

Until recently the best-kept secret in Paris, Odile is an exclusive skincare line carefully curated to provide maximum results with minimum effort. Sounds good to me! OR, j’etincelle caught my eye. A lightweight gel it contains a wealth of potent activators to revive tired and puffy eyes, while improving the appearance of fine lines and over time this delicate area should appear brighter. To use as a pre-wedding pamper treatment as an under-eye mask apply as a thick layer and leave for 15 minutes before wiping away to reveal instantly brightened and lifted results. It’s suitable for daily use too though – simply pat a small amount around the eye area morning and night. Find it at https://odile.co.uk, priced at £45. 77

PLANNING SOS

helping HAND

Local pros share their planning top tips

A HELPING HAND

How do I know if a wedding planner is for me? Hiring a planner can allow you to hand over any time-consuming responsibilities to a professional. We aim to free up your time so you can focus on all the fun elements and enjoy your day as a happy host rather than a hassled project manager. What’s the first step? I start with a laid-back chat to understand your style, preferences, and wedding day goals. I’ll then write a tailored, fully costed proposal. We can work on the entire event or just the parts you choose. How early should I start planning my wedding? Whilst professionals can plan a wedding in almost no time at all, the whole process generally takes a year or two. Even if you don’t have the budget for a full-service wedding planner, don’t stress. We can help couples to put together a schedule, so tasks can be carried out in a logical order. Phase 1: Planning It’s vital to have a clear plan on how much your wedding might cost and how you’ll pay for it, as it will be the primary driver for your decisions. Avoid hiring any suppliers before you’ve established your guest numbers and confirmed your venue and date. Make a note of any blackout dates. It’s a good idea to know ahead of time if your preferred date clashes with another event. Phase 2: Design An inspiration board is one of the best ways to gather your thoughts and create a clear game plan. Whether you’re a DIY couple or working with a professional planner, it’s important to have visuals of what you like.

Phase 3: Coordination This is where you see your ideas come to fruition. As a wedding planner, my role is to facilitate all the moving parts of your day and coordination helps do just that! Phase 4: Execution In the weeks leading up to your wedding, I’d send out final timelines and handle emails and logistics for you. My goal as your planner is to ask you the least amount of questions and be the liaison between your wedding day dream team and your guests. CELEBRANT-LED WEDDINGS

Meet your celebrant before the day… If you choose to book a celebrant, be sure to meet in person before the wedding so you feel comfortable with them. For me, it’s all part of the service and the bit that really counts. I like to meet couples for a drink or a meal, on video calls, via social media or chats on the phone. The end result is that on your big day it’s not a stranger that you’ll meet 20 minutes before the ceremony, it’s a friend who’ll put you at ease. Don’t forget the legal part… It’s important to remember that the legal formalities must be carried out within a year of ‘giving notice to marry’ with a two plus two ceremony the couple and two witnesses - at the Register Office. Give your celebrant all the details… Talk to them about where you want to get married. There are no restrictions here but a good celebrant will advise on what will and won’t work as well. Writing your own vows… Start thinking about your vows organically and make notes. Think about your relationship and all that you’ve shared together and when you’re ready, sit down in your favourite place, with your favourite drink and let the words come naturally. Restrictions… Nothing is a problem so you can have as many guests as you like (venue permitting), singing, dancing, religion or not - the choice is completely yours! It’s your day so do it your way. FINDING YOUR DREAM DRESS

Finding the one is occasionally an extensive process that takes a lot of research, champagne, and time! So here, Tala Daniel Bridal Couture, share their advice. Finding your boutique… When researching for your dream dress, we recommend paying close attention to which boutiques carry the designer you’re keen on and also which stock the specific designs that you like. More times than not, if you can’t find a certain dress on the bridal boutique’s website, they don’t stock the style you’re looking for in their store. In this case we’d recommend you asking if a ‘loan sample’ can be sourced from the designer. This is where you pay a small fee to borrow a dress from the designer for your bridal appointment. Alternatively, call or email the boutique you hope to visit for guidance. Do your homework… In addition to finding the boutique that stocks your preferred designs, we’d also recommend using one of the greatest wedding planning tools out there – Pinterest! Have a few styles picked out that you like and have these ready to share with your stylist at your appointment. Have an open mind… Be open to trying on all styles but still be clear on your likes and dislikes as each dress you try on could be the one and you don’t want to rule it out simply because it was your first dress you put on. ADDING THE FINISHING TOUCH

Shopping for wedding attire can be a minefield. Is there a theme to the event? Will the weather impact your choice of outfit? How big is too big when it comes to hats? A headpiece is the finishing touch to any outfit. Not just that but that everyone can pull a hat off – you just need to choose one that suits your face shape. How to work out your face shape… Knowing your face shape gives you the best chance of selecting your perfect hat - one that enhances your features, bringing total balance to your face. Spend some time simply looking in the mirror and getting to know the contours and shape of your face. • Round – You should try experimenting with a fedora, trilby, or a tall, decorative fascinator. These types of hats are fun, on-trend and add a certain height to your face. And, don’t forget a beanie set to the back of your head will give you that wow-factor! • Square – Why not experiment with cloche, bucket and bowler hats as well as a beanie or beret? In fact, you can wear any type of hat. Vintage or contemporary that adds a little roundness to your face shape. • Oval – Lucky you! You can spend hours experimenting with almost any type of hat - from floppy to bowler, cloche to beret, the hat world is truly your oyster! • Heart – You can also try out most hat types. It may be an idea to avoid wide brims and focus on cloche and bucket hats as they balance your features with striking effect! You’ll also be amazed at how good you look in a casual baseball cap or super thin beanie. • Rectangular – Check out cowboy and trapper hats. You’ll also look great in a sun or straw hat or any with a wide brim. My main tip is that picking a hat should be fun. After all, in the words of Philip Treacy, “how a hat makes you feel is what a hat is all about”. Katherine Elizabeth | Katherine Elizabeth Hats www.katherineelizabethhats.com

WHAT TO ASK WHEN SEARCHING FOR A PHOTOGRAPHER…

Do you have insurance? When hiring a wedding photographer ensure they have public liability insurance for the un-expected – from the photographer bumping into a guest with their lens or someone tripping over their tripod. What style/s do you specialise in? Work out the style of photography that you want and be sure that the photographer is a good fit. Do you want styled couple portraits or natural reportage images throughout your day. How many weddings have you shot? Don’t be embarrassed to ask. You’re placing your trust and faith into someone to capture every special moment. Make sure they have a wealth of knowledge and experience. How many hours are included in a full day’s coverage? Most weddings over-run! How much would it cost for an additional hour? I’ve seen photographers leave before the first dance when their time was up. Don’t let this happen to you. Do you bring a second photographer? Consider a second photographer to shoot from interesting angles and capture emotions that just the one couldn’t. What do you love about what you do? This may sound like an odd question, but it’s a crucial one. You want to make sure the person who shoots your wedding is as excited about your day as you are, and this isn’t just a job to them. Can I view some previous weddings? I’d suggest viewing two or three full weddings, not just their signature images on their website. You want to make sure they can capture every part of a wedding day from bride and groom preparation to the very last dance. Questions to ask yourself: • Do I feel a positive connection with this photographer? • Am I comfortable and confident with this person’s work? • Has this photographer listened well and addressed all my concerns? • Do I trust this person to capture the biggest day of my life? HOT TOPIC

What are the key wedding trends for 2022 and how are couples planning their weddings differently this year? PHOTOGRAPHY Some guest lists and wedding budgets are getting bigger in 2022. Couples are making the most of the opportunity to bring their nearest and dearest together. Larger weddings are slightly harder to run, but I love the thrill on the day. The organisation is key to keeping everything on track and to getting the best out of your wedding pictures. Remember, that for big weddings timing is everything. Here are my top tips: ❤ Have a clear timeline of the day – You can’t have 10 large group pictures in 10 minutes, you need to be realistic with your timings for photographs. ❤ Communication is key! Write a list of must-have pictures and share your ideas with the photographer.

FLOWERS I’m seeing people more excited about use of colour. Instead of keeping it classic, they want it to be quite a show after so many have had to wait for their big day to finally arrive. At this time of the year, we’re coming up to daffodil season so there’s lots of spring colours and blossom. I’d recommend using ranunculus, scented narcissus, mixed daffodils and camelia, which is a dark waxy foliage with Tudor rose that blooms from it in incredible colours. Foliage becomes a central point and you can make amazing displays with camelia, blossom and forsythia – a twig-like foliage with yellow flowers. This is grown locally and often overlooked but when placed in a vase it screams spring and looks amazing. Some couples are choosing to have more intimate nuptials and then planning a big bash when things settle down. It’s more about each other now. The traditional larger weddings are pushed aside, and people are just so in love that they want to tie the knot no matter what. My couples are becoming more aware of where their flowers are coming from. I work with seasonal flowers and use locally grown as much as possible to create that community feel and to support local businesses. Eloise McKinna | Garage Florals www.garageflorals.com 84

❤ Visit your wedding venue with your photographer to look at the best locations for portraits and family pictures. ❤ Consider investing in a second photographer or even a third. You won’t regret it. You’ll have more images and a variety of different angles such as the groom’s first look while the bride walks down the aisle. One photographer won’t be able to cover both. Your wedding pics will be a lasting memory of that special day. We as photographers can change a lot, but we can’t change the mood so enjoy the day and have fun. Doville Gailiuniene | Doville Gail Photography www.doville.co.uk

CELEBRANT

ASK THE EXPERTS

The trend of having celebrant-led weddings will continue to rise in 2022, as it did in 2021, with couples now recognising that they have so much more choice and can have the ceremony that’s not generic. More and more couples want a bespoke ceremony, one where there’s no content or venue restrictions and - most importantly - one that’s completely personal and tells their love story. I take the time to get to know my couples, which makes it all the more special. Celebrant-led weddings can be held anywhere, at any time, indoors or outdoors and couples can have the usual elements such as a bridal party, vows – we encourage and support them to write their own or traditional vows, the ring exchange, readings and signing of a symbolic certificate. Added to this they can have elements like a sand pouring, unity candle (where the venue permits real candles if indoors), rose ceremony, cocktail or wine blending or what about a champagne toast to cheers the couple at the end of the ceremony, the list is endless. Jennifer Patrice | Celebrant | www.jenniferpatrice.com

WEDDING PLANNING My biggest piece of advice this year is that couples need to be more careful when it comes to booking suppliers ensuring they’re making smart and informed decisions in a landscape that’s growing larger all the time. With 2022 gearing up to be the most hectic year for the industry following the number of cancellations during lockdown, suppliers are in high demand and more new companies are setting up than ever before. Alongside this comes yet another challenge: availability. Even with the influx of new suppliers, most are already fully booked for Saturdays between June and October 2022. Desperation to secure a wedding vendor in 2022 is leading many to settle for services from poorly regarded suppliers, or those with less experience in the field. Many are upping their costs, so couples could end up losing significant money if they make the wrong decision. It’s never been more important to either use a reputable wedding planner, or do your own thorough research and check contracts carefully to avoid being disappointed. Illy Goodall | Illy Elizabeth Weddings www.illyelizabethweddings.com

THE DRESS I’m loving the trend of interchangeable dresses with detachable sleeves and skirts. Choosing one of these designs gives you a range of completely different looks to wear throughout your day without having to buy more than one dress. If you’re tying the knot during the cooler months, you’d be grateful for sleeves during the day, but then for your evening celebrations you can remove them. I also love the idea of the removable skirts and trains. It’s surprising how different they can make your gown look. Opt for a dramatic flowing overskirt for your ceremony and then take it off to reveal a shorter or more demure skirt underneath and be ready to hit the dancefloor. Guests that have been with you all day will think you’ve changed into a different outfit! Irina Merkulova | Lace and Button | www.laceandbutton.co.uk 85

Let me eat cake!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

A

s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.

JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier

design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

92

Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are

entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.

To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!

Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.

I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.

Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.

I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.

My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.

Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.

The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 93

HONEYMOON

A round up of new openings and honeymoon essentials

When the big day is over, it’s time for newlyweds to pack for the honeymoon! Whether sunbathing on a secluded island or adventuring on an adrenaline-fuelled getaway, gift specialist Farrar and Tanner has everything you need to make the honeymoon even more memorable...

The modern and sophisticated style of the Wolf Windsor watch box elegantly displays and safely stores your watch collection. The grained vegan leather finish surrounds a glass window which lets you view and easily choose your timepiece for the day. A beautiful gift that can be personalised with an engraved message on a silver plate on the front.

The elegant Evo watch, from the iconic Mondaine series, features a stainless steel case, gently rounded with a slightly domed sapphire glass. This creates a magnifying effect accentuating the famous Mondaine watch face. With its large dial, clear hour and minutes lines and distinctive hands, the Evo has a truly timeless feel.

The Barbour wash bag is practical, classically stylish and highly durable. Featuring a cream tartan print, the bag has been designed to conveniently store your make-up and travel essentials. It has a zip-around fastening for easy access, an internal zip pocket for keeping your precious and valuable items, and a PU leather handle to carry or hang up for neat storing.

Stackers’ new larger version of its popular travel jewellery box, can now house more precious items! Featuring a soft velvet lining, there’s a section for storing rings and earrings and a central area divider (removable) perfect for necklaces or bracelets. There’s also a charming petite travel box and, to make it a truly personal gift, why not add a loved one’s initials?

Manufactured by Hans Kniebes, the soft premium leather case has a modern and elegant design with a zip fastening. Held securely inside are heat-hardened nail scissors, clippers and nail file, slanted tweezers, cuticle pusher and a hoopstick. For an individual touch, you can add personalised engraving to the nail clippers.

Travel in elegance and style with the Chelsea weekender bag by Ashwood Leather. Stunningly crafted from carefully chosen leather this is the ideal choice for weekend city breaks and minimoons. Finished in a high-shine chestnut shade, the included luggage tag can be embossed with a name or short message.

SWITZERLAND

Ruby Mimi in Zurich opened in October 2021, and is the first hotel of the Munich-based Ruby Group, to open in Switzerland. Situated where one of the first cinemas in Zurich used to thrill audiences more than 100 years ago, the Art Deco-listed hotel’s 208 rooms are spread over its seven floors. The new hotel takes guests on a journey back to the exciting golden era of Hollywood of the 1910s and 1920s with its charming cinema hall. A reminder of the building’s history, its cosy armchairs, red velvet curtains and popcorn machine create a retro cinema feeling. Ruby Hotels follow a clear structure: a location in the heart of the city, top design and high-quality furnishings, focusing on the essentials in order to remain affordable. There are six different room categories available at Ruby Mimi in Zurich, ranging from the NEST Rooms and COSY Rooms to the spacious LOFT Rooms and STAR Rooms which are particularly striking. They are inspired by five starlets of the 1910s who all bore the name Mimi, and each of the rooms feature historical dressing tables and a chaise longue. Average room rates range from CHF 210-230 per night. For more information, visit www.ruby-hotels.com/mimi
