The Quiet Site, an eco holiday park in the Lake District, has won several awards in 2020. The property was awarded AA North West Campsite of the Year, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and the Visit England Award for Excellence in the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable category. During the first national lockdown, the team worked hard to introduce new developments, including re-landscaping the pitches in the caravan field, refurbishments in the holiday cottages, renovating the games and pool room, planting new trees and improving the Wi-Fi system. Ideal for a mini-moon or as a break from wedding planning, the holiday park consists of several accommodation options such as luxury glamping cabins, timber camping pods, underground hobbit holes, self-catering cottages, as well as, all-weather tent pitches and motorhomes. CELEBRATE IN STYLE The Lakeside Suite has floor-to-ceiling windows, offering stunning views of the landscaped gardens and lake, and is capable of

hosting 350 guests for a grand celebration. Boasting large windows and plenty of natural light, The Masefield Suite is accessed from the ground floor of the original house and is ideal for large weddings. It has private access, disabled facilities, a bar and a separate lounge area with room for 150 loved ones. For those looking for something more traditional, the Victorian Garden Suite or Wordsworth Suite would be ideal. These two areas offer stylish surroundings, with doors that open up onto the grounds and can both accommodate 50 nearest and dearest.

WE LOVE... Brides and grooms-to-be can enjoy a tasting session and will receive a discount card to enjoy all the benefits of the hotel in the lead up to the big day which includes savings on spa treatments, gym memberships, dining in the restaurant and much more.

KIMPTON CLOCKTOWER HOTEL, M60 7HA 01612 881 111 | www.kimptonclocktower.com Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is a terracotta Grade II listed building with a history dating back to 1890. The property first opened as The Refuge Assurance Company Headquarters, and the grand clock tower at the centre of its striking Victorian architecture is an unmistakable landmark on Manchester’s skyline. The venue combines historic grandeur with quirky details and modern swagger. Oak panelling, dramatic chandeliers and high ceilings set the tone for this property and create a grand backdrop for photographs. There are also 270 new loft-style bedrooms and suites and a magnificent triple-height lobby for guests to explore.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE The recently refurbished Ballroom has been lovingly restored to the ornate design. This wonderful space was previously the Dining Hall of Refuge employees, where men and women had to sit separately, but today it can host up to 650 guests for the ceremony and 750 for a standing reception. Couples can hire an

external catering company if they wish and have exclusive use of the adjacent ballroom kitchen. The space includes the use of the ballroom bar, which can either be open or closed off depending on the couple’s preference. Smaller celebrations take place in the Director’s Suite, with its oversized windows and oak panelling it has a luxurious atmosphere. Holding up to 60 loved ones for the vows and 70 for a buffet reception, it has an ornate marble staircase and plenty of spaces to take photographs. Based underneath The Refuge Bar and Restaurant, Copperface Jacks is the perfect hideaway for evening receptions of up to 400 friends and family. This rustic space, with its central bar, provides a blank canvas that couples can personalise, and a small stage area that’s ideal for live music or a DJ.

WE LOVE... Couples will receive a complimentary breakfast tasting and a suite on the night of the wedding when booking a full wedding package. 19

REAL WEDDINGS

WINTER Merewen and Leona were friends for a long time before their friendship slowly grew into something more

erewen and Leona were good friends until their relationship grew into something more. “We’ve always been able to have a laugh and never taken life too seriously,” says Merewen. “Leona proposed to me in the Lake District. I was given a book about our past, and on the last page it said ‘will you marry me?’ Of course, the answer was ‘yes’! Our daughter then gave me a handmade wooden box with a beautiful ring inside.” Here Merewen shares some of their favourite moments from the big day...

We chose to get married at Broadoakes Country House as it was the perfect mixture of theatrical and musical, both of which are very important to us. The grounds and house are beautiful, and we fell in love with the place.

Our centrepieces were flowers and rum bottles. We had our guests fill in a scroll with a message and put it in the bottle on their table. On our first anniversary, we smashed them and read all the lovely notes.

We didn’t give our guests specific seats so that they could mingle.

As it was close to December, we requested that festive lights were put up for our wedding. We also had log fires burning when our guests arrived.

Leona and I chose a hog roast and buffetstyle service to keep the atmosphere relaxed.

The cake was made by my mum. It tasted great, and we accompanied it with lots of cupcakes. 22

REAL WEDDINGS

The maid-of-honour wore a blue dress while the bridesmaids chose white gowns.

Leona chose a white beaded dress from Debenhams and accessorised with a tiara.

Just before the ceremony, I went outside as the weather was lovely and was bowled over by all the guests. After the service, when we walked out and saw everyone in the sunshine, it felt magical. I opted for a suit from Slater Menswear but with a different waistcoat to my dad and brother.

My father and Leona’s aunty sang us down the aisle. My friend, Nicki Naden, then sang as we signed the register and walked out. Everyone was stunned by their talented! We then hired Dancing in the Dark to keep everyone entertained in the evening.

Our day was magical and full of love and laughter. It was very relaxed and over far too soon. 23 ď ľ

The wedding organiser, Jo, and all the staff were fantastic! Our gift from Alicia of a song played at our wedding breakfast recorded especially for us was incredible. For our honeymoon, we stayed in a cabin in the Lake District for a week. We then went to Poland in January, which was a surprise organised by Leona.

REAL WEDDINGS

B

ethany and Lee met in 2008 during a night out. “We met through mutual friends,” says Bethany. “We dated for a few months and then parted ways. In this time I travelled the world and went to university in Sheffield while Lee stayed in Carlisle pursuing his engineering career. We reconnected in 2017 and as they say, the rest is history.” Lee popped the question on Christmas Eve in 2019. “I was downstairs sorting presents when Lee shouted down to me as if something was wrong,” shares the bride. “I rushed upstairs, and he pointed me in the direction of the bedroom. As I stepped into the room, he started playing our song, and as I turned around there was a heart made from petals on the bed, and he was down on one knee with a ring.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We chose to get married at St. James Carlisle,” explains Bethany. “It’s our local church and is where my parents got married more than 30 years ago.” The couple decided to give their guests personalised tote bags as favours. “We wanted our friends and family to have something personal,” shares the bride. “Inside each one was a bottle of prosecco, a mini wedding cake, snacks, glow sticks, balloons, decorations, name cards, a photo scavenger hunt and personalised hand sanitiser.” The bride put together their table plan. “I used an old pallet, cleaned it down and decorated it, so it tied in with our rustic theme,” says Bethany. “The seating plan was for our parents to socially distance in the garden as our wedding was before receptions were allowed, and we had to follow the Government’s guidelines.” Lee’s mum made their big-day bake. “We chose a lemon filling,” shares Bethany. “To decorate it we used a cake-topper that’s been in my family for four generations.” The lovebirds decided to get creative with their flowers. “The blooms were provided by Vandella Flowers,” says the bride. “I placed a Lego Princess Leia in my bouquet and Harry Potter figures in the bridesmaids’ posies. I made the buttonholes for the groomsmen. They all had Lego Star Wars characters in them and looked great. We continued the theme into our centrepieces and used old jam jars and wands made from chopsticks.” “We travelled in my dad’s classic Daimler,” reveals Bethany. “My uncle drove, and it was a wonderful experience.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS Bethany wore a gown called Brandy by Rebecca Ingram. “I purchased it from Carol’s Bridal Boutique,” says Bethany. “I accessorised with a matching veil and headpiece from Etsy.” Lee chose a tweed suit from Sirri, with a pale blue tie, socks, handkerchief and Boba Fett cufflinks. “The bridesmaids opted for gowns from Debenhams,” explains the bride. “The dresses were a pale blue, multi-way design that looked great.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “Adam Teasdale played acoustic music as we walked out of the church,” shares Bethany. “He was meant to be doing our main 27 

REAL WEDDINGS entertainment, but as we weren’t allowed a reception, he said he’d come play at our service and come back when we can have a big celebration.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “Lots of people asked if I was nervous in the runup to the wedding,” Lee shares. “I would respond with ‘why would I be nervous when I know this is the woman for me?’ I know everyone must say this, but my favourite part of the day was watching my beautiful bride walk down the aisle.” As a result of the pandemic, the couple had to re-plan their big day three times. “We had to decide whether we wanted to wait to get married or have a small celebration,” says the bride. “We wanted to get married for us but also so people like my 92-year-old grandma would definitely be there. The wedding may have been strange with everyone wearing masks in the church, but it was still magical. We live-streamed the whole thing so that everyone who couldn’t be there in person could still be part of our special day. We streamed the speeches from the back garden reception, and as the best men weren’t allowed to attend, they filmed theirs and sent it over to us. They used the theme of a COVID-19 wedding to bring some much needed light-hearted banter to the day. They changed Borris’ quote to ‘stay safe, protect the wedding, save the marriage’ and every time they said this, we had to do a shot.” Bethany and Lee have decided to host a bigger celebration at a later date. “We’re looking forward to celebrating when things got back to normal,” shares Bethany. “We had planned to do it in December 2020, but that wasn’t possible in the current climate, so we have chosen to postpone it and use it as a one-year anniversary party. This will mean it will have been the fifth time we planned our wedding after having to change our plans so many times.”

HONEYMOON “We had a long weekend away just outside of Windermere,” reveals the bride. “It was lovely to get away from everyday life and relax and reflect. When the world gets back to some normality, we will go further afield.”

WE’RE ALL IN

lice and Sean first laid eyes on each other at the Young Farmers Club. “We both love to party and hit it off right away,” says Alice. “Sean proposed to me while we were on paddling boards in Lake Windermere. It was a big surprise and we couldn’t have been happier.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 35 

We had our ceremony at St Thomas the Martyr Church, but the reception venue was always going to be at our home. We were going to have a marquee but due to COVID-19 restrictions, we couldn’t do this with all our guests, so we decided when restrictions were lifted to have a small family wedding with a bigger celebration for all our guests next year.

The most important thing for us was to have a relaxed, informal wedding for everyone to enjoy. We used our garage for food and drink, and on the lawn we had a top hat tipi from Maypole Tipi, just in case it rained as nobody was allowed into the house. We decorated the space with fairylights, trestle tables, sheepskin rugs, benches and coloured ribbons.

We chose natural garden styled blooms from Hedgerow Flowers. We opted for dahlias, snapdragons, astilbe, delphiniums with grasses and ferns to add texture with my favourite, deep red trailing amaranthus. 36

Sean and I chose a grazing table and a barbecue with meat supplied by Taylors Farm Shop.

My sister made our cake as a present. It was two-tiers with chocolate fudge on the bottom and vanilla sponge on the top, decorated with buttercream and handpainted flowers.

Our centrepieces were decorative milk churns filled with beautiful flowers.

REAL WEDDINGS

My dress was the biggest nightmare. The gown of my dreams still hadn’t arrived in the country, so I had no alternative but to find another dress with just two weeks until the wedding. I never thought I’d find a design that I loved as much as the one I had originally ordered, so I went for something completely different and found the most perfect gown in Jules Bridal Boutique. It was the perfect fit, and all I needed was it shortened.

I wore my mum’s veil and a hair-vine in my hair. To complete the look, I chose Charlotte Mills shoes and placed a silver sixpence in them.

Sean, the groomsmen and our dads opted for matching navy suits and waistcoats from Skopes. To tie everything together, we chose burgundy ties and pocket handkerchiefs that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses.

The bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses from Willow & Pearl. We opted for two different styles, one had a V-neckline while the other was a cowl neck design.

I was so excited on the morning of the wedding. Sean had to chase some escaped cows before the ceremony, so there wasn’t a lot of time to think about everything. We loved the day from start to finish and it turned out just as we planned.

We decided not to have entertainers and instead opted for garden games. We played egg and spoon, crochet, quoits and beer pong. 37 

You can’t marry a dairy farmer and not love milkshakes and ice cream! When we came out of the church, we had sweet treats from Velvets that were delicious.

We didn’t have any speeches as we wanted the day to be very informal. COVID-19 restrictions stated no singing in the church but this changed the night before the wedding, so we had a soloist which our reverend secretly arranged for us.

We will be going on a trip on our original wedding date in a vintage Volkswagen Campervan from Nostalgic Campers. We hired it for our original date to take the bridesmaids to the church and then for our honeymoon, but we still plan to tour the Welsh coast from Anglesey to the Gower Peninsula in it.

Eventually, Malcolm found a job up North, and we moved in together in 2018.” Malcolmolm popped the question during a trip to Wales. “Our birthdays are one day apart, so we went on a special holiday to celebrate,” shares the bride. “On the evening of my 30th birthday, Malcolm got down on one knee, read a very sentimental poem and asked me to marry him.” Here Hollie shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

I bought my dress before lockdown, but due to the restrictions I couldn’t get the length altered in time, so I ended up purchasing a new gown from ASOS. It was completely different from the original dress but, in the end, seemed fitting for the style of wedding we had. Malcolm got his Ted Baker suit from Moss Bros and paired it with a yellow and cream tie. He also had a special buttonhole that matched my bouquet and headdress.

In the morning, we were so nerv ous and hoping not to stumble on our vows. Neither of us particularly like to be the centre of attention, so it was quite nerve-racking, but as soon as we saw each other in the church, the nerv es seemed to disappear. Our vicar, Canon Ron, was wonderful and com men ted on how it was the first wedding he had conducted dressed like a spaceman, referring to the visor he had to wear.

There was a playground for the children, and we played some music from a portable speaker and provided props for our guests to take fun photos with. We also made some fun packs for the kids with sweets, colouring books and the guests were given pages of our guest book to decorate.

Our day had a been a long time coming with so much -19 uncertainty over whether it would be possible due to COVID it when so restrictions. We had changed the date three times, tely comple was finally happening, we were so excited and 30 overwhelmed by everyone’s support. As we could only have our of rest the guests, we decided to live stream the ceremony to original guest list, which was amazing.

All of our guests made the day so special. Swapping to our new wedding date at late notice meant that they had to rearrange their days off work and drop everything to come and celebrate with us. We can’t thank them enough for making it a day to remember.

Q – How can we add seasonal touches to our wedding video?

HOT TOPIC:

A cosy winter theme is a wonderful way to share your love. The Christmas spirit magnifies what is already one of the happiest days of your life. Here are my top tips: ❤ Capture glimpses of your festive flowers and evergreen décor in the video. ❤ Include shots of you snuggling together seeking warmth and comfort. You could also add some custom jackets to help keep you warm. ❤ Take things indoors where you can capture precious moments in front of an open fire or Christmas tree. ❤ Search for mistletoe and steal a cheeky kiss beneath it. ❤ Dance in snowflakes or have an impromptu snowball fight if you’re lucky to have a white Christmas. WEDDING WORRIES

Our experts solve your wintry problems

COME RAIN OR SHINE www.davidkhphotography.com

Q – How can we capture amazing outdoor pictures at our December wedding if the weather turns bad? I’ve had to shoot in all kinds of weather, come rain or shine so the first thing you should do is make sure you’ve discussed the possibility of rain during your consultation. Your supplier should always suggest ideas for if the weather turns sour and have a backup plan, which will usually revert to photographing the wedding party indoors. Choose a venue which has lots of outside cover, that way everyone can keep dry, and there are plenty of opportunities to get some great shots. If you’re hell-bent on having your photographs outdoors and there’s no cover, I would order lots of brollies, just in case. Your photographer should be able to orchestrate some funny and quirky shots of you and your guests braving the weather. On a more serious note, if it does happen to rain, sleet or snow on your wedding day, then this can be an absolute Godsend for any photographer that knows how to create portraits by using flash to light up the scene. December nights move in fast, so if the weather turns and you think it’s all over, think again. Don’t miss out on this opportunity and make sure you’re confident that your suppliers can produce some epic shots. David Hobson Photographer www.davidkhphotography.com 44

CAKE EXPECTATIONS

Q – We’re having a winter wedding and would love to incorporate the time of year into our cake. Do you have any flavour suggestions or decorations we could choose? For this time of year, consider seasonal flavours such as black forest, chocolate orange, mint chocolate and of course rich, brandy-soaked fruit cake. Autumnal colours are phenomenal. There are so many rich shades in the leaves that are actually very similar to the hues found in sponges. Naked cakes with a dusting of icing sugar, pine cones and berries is a simple yet elegant way of incorporating seasonal shades and textures. EXPERT ADVICE

WINTER WONDERLAND

Q – My wife-to-be and I are having a winter wedding and would love to incorporate the time of year into our photographs. Do you have any ideas on how we can do this? Deciding how to set that scene can be quite challenging, so I suggest you decide on a theme that invokes winter. You could incorporate festive colours such as berry red, black and gold or natural greenery. A less invasive method would be to use creative lighting. This can be done to emphasise the darkness of winter with soft subdued lights to create a cosy and romantic feel. If possible, use candlelight or firelight to create a more Nordic look. Stacey Jackson Photographer www.darklemoner.co.uk

Q – What questions should we ask our photographer before booking? I’m assuming you’ve found a professional with a specific style that you like. From this point, you need to ask questions that can’t readily be answered by looking on their website. Are they able to create the images you’ve fallen in love with if the weather is less than ideal? Not all venues are suitable for indoor portraits, so your photographer must be confident in any given location, with the tools and creative drive to make the best of it. Do you receive images in web resolution, full resolution or both? Full resolution versions are needed for printing, and you need to check you have permission to have them printed. Print shops are increasingly asking for proof of ownership or the right to print images. Web resolution means you can upload to social media channels without having to resize. Your supplier must know which group images are required, as it can get quite hectic on the day, and members of the congregation have a habit of disappearing to the bar. It’s worthwhile asking the best man to assist in rounding up family members for group shots. That way, your photographer can concentrate on the photography, rather than trying to herd people, which cuts down time considerably, allowing everyone to enjoy the day.

Q – We want a harpist to play festive songs at our elegant Christmas wedding. Do you have any suggestions that won’t sound tacky or over the top? Live music at Christmas warms the heart. Carols work well on the harp especially if you can find someone to sing along. Options like Silent Night, Jingle Bells, which the kids will love, Fairytale of New York or even the theme from Love Actually, would work well. Adding festive music on the harp can create a special and intimate feeling on your big day. Sarah Davies Harpist www.sarahdaviesharpist.com

Intimate wedding inspiration

A

s a result of COVID-19 more couples are choosing to have intimate nuptials, so to help you create the perfect celebration, we’ve rounded up some of the regions best suppliers and asked for their top tips on creating a fabulous wedding with a small guest list.

MEET PHOTOGRAPHER, SCOTT WIGGLESWORTH FROM BLACKFELL PHOTOGRAPHY 07817 536 331 | www.blackfellphotography.co.uk

www.blackfelldesign.co.uk

Planning or adapting your big day to accommodate a global crisis is challenging; I know because I’m also piecing together my wedding and trying to navigate the pitfalls of post-pandemic celebrations. Like many things in life, it’s not the quantity, but the quality that really matters and your guest list is just the same. From a photography point of view, the smaller numbers actually benefit you in the sense that you’ll likely have more time and flexibility to get the shots you want. It’s your day, so it makes sense to get the most from your photographer. Speak with them about adding some extra portrait images and focusing on a more candid, intimate reportage style of imagery. Consider some locations close to your venue that would have been a struggle to get to with a higher number of guests. You can still make the day feel full of life and create a sense of interaction if you add layers of interest to your images. Try shooting through foliage, flowers, décor and guests using a long lens to condense perspective with shallow depth of field to achieve a real sense of intimacy and intrigue as well as a dynamic and almost cinematic feel. Additionally, it allows the photographer to build up peripheral and narrative shots that help tell the story of the day in detail.

MEET FLORIST, KATE HIGGINS FROM FABULOUS FLOWERS AND EVENTS 07769 783 723 https://fabulousflowersandevents.co.uk www.paulswiftphotography.com

Planning a wedding is a joyous time, and even though things are different at the moment, you can still have a fun and meaningful time planning your special day. It’s going to be a more intimate affair, so let that help you when it comes to choosing your flowers. Opt for blooms that represents your relationship, maybe the first flower you received off your partner or arrangements that are in season the month you’re getting married. Look for something that identifies with you both or has meaning to your relationship. Your florist will be able to help you along the way to find the perfect arrangements for your big day. 47

MEET CAKE EXPERT, WHITNEY SCHOFIELD FROM THE BLACK ROD CAKE COMPANY 07943 448 453 www.facebook.com/theblackrodcakecompany One fabulous thing about cake is that even though weddings are smaller you don’t need to scale it down. When you book your big-day bake, the portions are sized as little more than a mouthful. The most popular size we do is a three-tier design, which gives approximately 80 portions. However, if like us you love cake, it wouldn’t be inconceivable to cut this into 20-30 wedges. This means your guests can all have a lovely big slice and you will have a couple leftover to share with people who couldn’t come to your wedding or for you to enjoy a few days later. Having something ‘standard’ sized at your scaled-down wedding can be a great way of making things feel a lot more ‘normal’.

MEET STATIONERY EXPERT, AMANDA WILLIAMS FROM LOVE INVITED 01618 830 079 | www.loveinvited.co.uk The pandemic has meant that couples will now get married in front of fewer guests but looking at the positives, a smaller ceremony frees up the budget and allows you to create a truly personal day. When it comes to the invites, a little more budget goes a long way to creating those special touches and means guests receive something truly special through the post. A great way to put your personality and style into your invitations is to commission a custom design. Here you can be confident that your guests won’t have seen similar invitations before. Guaranteed

48

to inspire and wow your guests, it also allows you to get your creative juices flowing, or you can let your designer do it all for you. Illustrated wedding stationery is one of the biggest trends and another great way to customise and personalise. It gives you a very personal touch but also gives you control over exactly how it will come to life on paper. Vellum is a wonderful paper that can be customised in many different ways and will give a truly bespoke twist on your creations. Not only can you print on it, but you can also fold it, layer it or place calligraphy on it – it’s so versatile. To get a strong and luxurious look, you could pair vellum paper with another colour, pattern or textile. Adding a wax seal is guaranteed to make a luxurious statement and complements the vellum perfectly.

INSPIRATION FLOWERS MEET LOCAL CELEBRANT, SARAH NELSON FROM MOMENTS TO 07450 391 374 | www.momentsto.co.uk

www.andrewab.photography

www.andrewab.photography

Wedding ceremonies are currently more intimate affairs, however, fewer guests give you more opportunities. You might not think that, but you have more budget to play with as you aren’t feeding and entertaining as many people. You can make your ceremony even more memorable by asking each guest to have a role in your day. With fewer in number, your wedding will be more relaxed, allowing your loved ones to feel confident in contributing something meaningful to your service. Having a celebrant conduct your ceremony will add to the intimacy of the day. The ceremony is designed around the two of you, and you can involve family, friends and even pets! A celebrant will weave personal elements around your love story and vows to create a truly personal service. It may be an intimate moment in time, but the ceremony will be profound and a beautiful memory. When it comes to choosing a celebrant there are a few things you need to take into consideration. Decide on what type of ceremony you want, such as will the ceremony be focused on you or a performance by the celebrant? Are you an outgoing couple who likes to be loud and outrageous, or do you want something more contained? Answering these questions will help you find a supplier whose personality fits yours. Will there be religious or faith-based elements in your ceremony? If so, you want a civil celebrant. Whereas humanists offer ceremonies that are based on their non-religious beliefs which might suit you better. A good celebrant will ask a lot of questions about your relationship, so they can write a personal service. Most suppliers offer a free chat so you can see if you click and decide how comfortable you feel talking to them. Read online reviews and/or ask around. If you know someone who had a celebrant wedding, get their opinion and ask if they’d recommend them. Find out what you get for your money. Some offer packages, while others have a base price and extra elements that cost more.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR GUEST LIST Deciding on your guest list can be a difficult task, with so many friends and family wanting to celebrate your big day it can feel impossible telling people they can’t attend. Stick to the six-month rule and don’t invite anyone that you haven’t had contact with within that time. The internet is a great way of making everyone feel included. Ask a loved one to film the ceremony and share it over Zoom or Skype to anyone who was unable to attend. If you want a big celebration but want to get married now, then why not have your ceremony this year and a big reception next year? This has become a popular trend and is a great way of celebrating your one-year anniversary. 49

Hotel Brooklyn was the perfect venue for our styled shoot. It’s quirky, modern style with New York influences fit the theme in every single way. e love autumn here at Your North West Wedding, so when this seasonal shoot landed in our inbox, we just had to feature it. The photographer, Clare Gelderd tells us: “When a venue offers 110 acres of private ancient parkland upon the unspoilt shores of Lake Windermere and the leaves start to fall, it becomes a mystical setting. Imagine the sharp crunch of crisp burnt leaves beneath your feet and the calming waves lap upon the shore as you enjoy warming beverages and delicious desserts. Autumnal weddings, of any size, spark opportunity for warmth, mood and texture, which all suppliers evolve and enhance. There’s something refreshing about being at one with the surroundings during a spectacular seasonal wedding.” 57 

e love to highlight some of the talented suppliers that our wonderful region has to offer, so we were excited when we first saw this gorgeous shoot at Bashall Barn in Lancashire. Photographer Rebecca from Yu Photography tells us: “I wanted to create a shoot that would make brides feel daring enough to go with two looks. Sometimes you love so many different styles, that it’s hard to choose just one, I know I did! We decided to go with a beautiful boho style dress matched with a floral crown and a diverse, modern jumpsuit. The cake, florals, stationery and styling helped create a boho vibe which we matched with autumnal colours that I feel work well all year round.”

The photographers, Maya and Rachel, tell us more about their images: “The photo shoot was in the pipeline for a very long time. The location was the most important element for us. We decided to shoot at Derwentwater Lake, an iconic setting that’s a great example of the beauty that lies at our doorstep. The theme of the shoot was nature. We desperately wanted to capture the natural beauty of a sunset. Every element was carefully selected to present a gentle look and to highlight the picturesque views that the national park has to offer the wedding industry.” 65 

THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress

n w o g F

ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.

Dave Benett for Getty Images

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.

82

What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an

FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!

It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.

What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.

Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.

Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

Knight Classical

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.

Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw

her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best this winter

WINTER LUXE

Q – We’re having a winter wedding, and I’d love to incorporate some of the season’s colours into my hair and makeup. Do you have any suggestions? Winter weddings can be magical and with so much choice for your hair and make-up, it’s hard to know where to start! To help, I’ve put together some of my top tips: ❤ Simple but effective works best. I recommend choosing either a bold eye or lip, so your look doesn’t become overpowering. ❤ Choose a style that suits you and be confident. If you’ve booked a hair or make-up artist they’ll be able to help you decide on a look. ❤ Select what hair accessories you’ll be wearing, such as a headband, tiara or flowers. This can be an easy way of incorporating your chosen colours or even just a hint of them. ❤ Plum goes perfectly with this time of year and works with most skin tones. You could add this hue to your lips, eyeshadow or if you’re feeling adventurous, even you’re eyeliner. ❤ A gold-based highlighter looks beautiful paired with a soft blush. ❤ Use these ideas for your bridesmaids as well to tie the whole look together. ❤ Always have a hair and make-up trial, preferably on the same day. Communicate with your supplier about what you want and any concerns you may have. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and remember they’ll be able to advise what is best for you. It’s their job, after all. ❤ I always say that make-up is there to enhance and help you feel like the best version of you, especially on your big day. Laura Martin-Brooks Make-up artist www.pixiedustmakeupartist.com 88

SNOW IS FALLING

Q – I’m worried about the weather ruining my hair at our December wedding. Do you have ideas or styles I should go for to ensure I look great all day? I’m based in the Lake District, so I’m used to doing weddings where the weather is unpredictable. The style that usually works well in the damp is an up do. If you want an allday hold without having to worry, then it’s definitely the best option. It can still be soft, and with good hairspray, it will protect from the weather without looking sticky or too sleek. If you want to leave your hair down, then pin it to one side to help protect from the wind or just take the front section back. Using good products on wet hair before styling can help it hold too. I love the Redken Frizz Dismiss, especially for preparation on curly hair and Elnett Hairspray, which may be old fashioned, but still works wonders in wet weather. A GRAND ENTRANCE

Q – I’m asking our guests to dress in festive colours at our upcoming wedding, and my mum wants to do the same while standing out from the crowd. Do you have any ideas about what she should wear? Generally, we tend to find that what makes the mother-of-the-bride stand out isn’t necessarily the colour she wears, but the style and formality of the outfit. Her dress should be special and make her look and feel fabulous on your big day. We have some incredibly beautiful options available in different fabrics and a whole host of show-stopping styles, from standalone dresses to chic two-piece dresses and jackets. Everyone is different, and we always suggest your mum tries on a variety of styles, shapes and colours to find the look that best suits her and reflects her style and personality. Whether that be rich jewel hues, opulent golds, creams, silvers, lace, beading, a headpiece or stunning shoes, your mum won’t be short of gorgeous options for your festive wedding. TRIED AND TESTED R+Co Waterfall Moisture + Shine Lotion £25, www.beautyrebel.store/rco

Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com

“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews

“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey

Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker

GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve

We put the latest hair-styling products to the test

Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson 89

WINTER TRAVEL

With travel rules and regulations constantly changing, newlyweds and nearlyweds will be looking to the UK to celebrate post-vows, and minimooners will be spoilt for choice when sticking to destinations closer to home; here’s two to whet your appetite: Situated deep in the Scottish Highlands, 57 Nord occupies a dramatic position between three ancient sea lochs surrounded by the majestic Kintail Mountains. With floor to ceiling windows that frame the panoramic views stays here are largely elemental, particularly in the autumn and winter months when the weather is ever more startling. Cosy up by the fire and watch the weather roll in with a dram of specially selected whiskey from the honesty bar and tuck into the hamper of artisan goodies. There are ample wet weather activities for epicureans: from the neighbourhood Fairy Tale Distillery to the internationally acclaimed Talisker; fine dining at Kinloch Lodge or fresh crayfish cooked at home from Duncan, the neighbourhood fisherman. At night watch the famous Eilean Donan castle light up from the cottage and spend the evening on a tour of the night’s sky with the help of the in-house guide – how romantic!
