elcome to the first issue of 2022. It dawned on me over the festive period that in just a few months time I will become Mrs Cullen – eek! I can’t believe how quickly time passes, we’ve been engaged for more than a year now, and it’s just flown by. I’m very organised, much to my fiancé’s dismay, but the closer we get to the day, the more I feel like I’m forgetting something. We’ve booked all of our suppliers, organised all the outfits, so it’s just the small things left to do, but the nerves are starting to set in. My wonderful bridesmaids have been helping keep me calm, but the idea of walking down the aisle without falling over is giving me nightmares. Talking to some of our readers, I know that many of you felt the same in the run-up to your big day, so it’s really nice knowing that I’m not alone. If you have any tips for controlling nerves on the day, please feel free to get in touch as any ideas would be greatly appreciated! I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I did writing it. It’s full of tips from local wedding professionals, ideas for styling your venue, fabulous real weddings, styled shoots and an impressive fashion section. If you’ve recently celebrated your day or been involved with a styled shoot, email me at melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com or via www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

LOOKING YOUR BEST DRINK IT ALL IN Augill Castle in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, has launched a collection of hand-crafted dry gin. 1837 is a drink the embodies the essence of the castle with a feisty spirit that’s softened by the flavours of the surrounding land. The gin is designed to be drunk along with tonic from Marlish in Northumberland, but it’s just as easy to enjoy on ice as it’s softened with honey from local bees bursting with the oils and aromas of heather from the fells that surround the castle. The drink is called 1837 as that was the year that the plan to build the castle was created and when Queen Victoria ascended the throne, in short, a year in which history was made. The gin is produced in collaboration with Hawkridge Distillers in Berkshire and is released in a limited edition batch of 200 bottles. Each one will be numbered and signed by Augill Castle. To find out more, visit www.stayinacastle.com
Manchester is home to the region’s first all in one grooming service encompassing traditional barbering and male-only face and body treatments. King Street Grooming is the brainchild of Manchesterfounded Inc & Co and has set up shop on renowned King Street. The striking venue has a dark colour palette, with wall shelving and fluted glass screens. This, paired with modern material accents and lighting features, gives the space an edge and an unmistakably cool identity. Gareth Rowan-Dylan, the managing director of King Street Grooming, said: “We’re delighted to be opening King Street Grooming, the first of its kind in Manchester. This unique male experience will bridge a gap that’s been missing in the market, which will allow men to be pampered in a masculine and comforting environment, all on Manchester’s aptly named King Street.” Head over to www.kingstreetgrooming.com for more information.
CONGRATULATIONS Family-run Lake District Hotels, which operates six venues in the Lake District, picked up the Family Business of the Year award at the 2021 in-Cumbria Business Awards. The awards recognise and reward the best Cumbrian businesses. Lake District Hotels was established in 1983 by Kit and Charles Graves when they bought the Kings Arms Hotel. The group has expanded its portfolio over the years and invested in new properties. In 2014, the former Queens Hotel in Keswick was transformed into the Inn on the Square thanks to a £2.5 million refurbishment, while the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa underwent a major investment in 2018 with the opening of a luxury new spa, 18 spa suites and the award-winning pan-Asian Mizu restaurant. Dani Hope, the director at the hotels along with her parents Kit and Charles, told us: “It’s a real honour to receive this award, especially as there are so many fantastic family businesses operating in the Lake District and Cumbria. Along with our brilliant team at Lake District Hotels, we work every day to ensure our guests have the best experience with us, and the fact they return time after time to visit us is a testament to that. After the difficulties of the past 18 months due to the pandemic, it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate something so positive with the team.” Check out www.lakedistricthotels.net for more information. 10

TIME OF THE
Clare and Daniel had a winter-themed wedding at Foxfields Country Hotel Images courtesy of Toni Darcy Photography
C
lare and Daniel met at college. “We were both studying IT,” says Clare. “Our relationship ended as Daniel moved away to university. A little over six years later, Daniel found a picture from the good old days which sent us down a rabbit hole, and the rest is history.” Daniel popped the question while the couple were on holiday in Florida. “I’m a big Harry Potter fan, so he got down on one knee in front of Hogwarts at Universal Studios,” shares the bride. “Daniel looked so nervous that I said yes before he even finished asking the question. We then called my parents, and my dad congratulated us, but my mum thought it was a joke because Daniel is always winding her up.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 33
We’d eaten the food at Foxfields Country Hotel before and knew it was fantastic, so we were drawn to the venue right away. The staff were friendly, and we felt looked after and listened to.
For our favours, we chose hexagonal discs, which doubled up as place names. We also gave our guests candy canes and the kids personalised Christmas stockings filled with goodies.
Our centrepieces were Christmas wreaths and rustic candles.
Daniel and I chose burgundy and white flowers with thistles and green foliage from Marshall’s Florist.
The cake from Cherry Blossom Bakery was simple and elegant at the front and decorated with Star Wars images on the back. Daniel describes it as a mullet cake; business in the front and a party in the back! 34
We decorated the space with a sleigh and Christmas tree, a Star Wars-themed post box, Harry Potter-inspired confetti cones and disposable cameras.
REAL WEDDINGS
I had two wedding dresses, one for the ceremony, which was long with a small train and a shorter gown for the evening. I accessorised with a veil and beautiful earrings.
The bridesmaids opted for navy floor-length dresses to match Daniel’s suit.
Daniel and his groomsmen wore bespoke tailor-made tuxedos from Moss Bros.
To keep our guests entertained, we hired Yanthia who did face painting and balloon modelling for the children. The Photo Booth Guys provided a booth with props and our DJ Neil Kennedy A.K.A. The Ginge hosted a game of Mr and Mrs. I also pretended to be Santa Clause and handed out gifts to the kids. Daniel’s favourite moment was entering the evening reception to the Star Wars theme tune, and mine was the impromptu rapping of Eminem’s Lose Yourself with Daniel in the middle of the dancefloor – we nailed it! We also loved having our dogs there and having them as part of our day. Sadly neither of them are with us anymore, so it means even more to us now.
We felt calm on the morning of the wedding, and there was no nerves or doubts in our minds. I was told several times that I was the most chilled bride ever! 35
Our first memory as a married couple was me forcing Daniel to take a shot of Black Sambuca, which ended up with a quick trip to the bathroom!
Our caricaturist impressed all of our guests and stayed a lot longer than planned to make sure that everyone got a picture. All our suppliers went above and beyond for us. Foxfields Country Hotel moved their Christmas trees to make it look perfect for us, and Pure Elegance Weddings & Events Limited worked tirelessly throughout the day to make sure that everything moved around and changed seamlessly. Phoebe from Flossy & Leigh Bridal Styling Company was invaluable to us! She touched up make-up, fixed hairstyles and helped me change dresses and styles during the day.

isa and Paul met through a mutual friend. “I was 16 and Paul was 19,” says Lisa. “We got on really well and have done ever since. We’ve been together for 17 years and have two beautiful children together.” Paul popped the question after 16 years together. “It was a complete surprise,” shares the bride. “He asked me at my 30th birthday party in front of all our friends and family. He put the ring in a gorgeous balloon, and I had to pop it and find it beneath rose gold feathers.”
SETTING THE SCENE “We absolutely loved The Glass House,” explains Lisa. “It was a modern blank canvas that lent itself well to any theme. It’s set within a golf course, so the property is surrounded by beautiful fields and there are several spaces to take amazing photographs. There were also lots of local hotels nearby for travelling guests to stay. It’s such an amazing venue that’s so spacious and light.” The happy couple chose a modern floral gypsophila theme. “We wanted the wedding to be textured and dainty but still have a modern feel,” adds the bride. “Bash Parties & Events were able to bring this theme to life and not only take a new spin on a gypsophila wedding but transform the space into a romantic setting. Traditionally, the flower is used within rustic themes, but we added pinks and lilacs to make it a bit different. Our invitations and table plan included flower hoops that we brought to life in our centrepieces. We used hoops and large trees to not only create texture but also height and depth to the overall look of the room. We wanted to make sure the gold and pink traditional feminine theme took on a new edge while still being trendy. The pink and lilac glass bubble balloons added a modern touch and brought the colours to life, and tied in the pink and mauve tones. We were so glad that we decided to add coloured glassware and crockery as this transformed the tables and brought the different colours to life. We added pink glass lanterns and candle holders alongside white and gold cutlery from Whitehouse Event Crockery.” For their favours, the couple gave their guests sugar cookies which also doubled up as name places. “Instead of having a traditional cake, we decided to have four separate bakes with matching macaroons, cake pops and doughnuts,” recalls Lisa. “They were draped with gypsophila and had pink bubbles on the front to tie in with the centrepieces. The Sweetest Thing Cakery and Bash Parties & Events worked together to ensure everything looked amazing. We made the dessert area a huge focus of the room, and it paid off.” Lisa and Paul hired a white modern Tesla from Falcon Tesla Wedding Cars to transport them to the venue. “Our catering was provided by Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar,” says the bride. “We had a wonderful four-course sit-down meal.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a gown called Hayley by Hayley Paige,” shares Lisa. “I wanted a dress that was girly yet modern. The colour was amethyst and had multi-tonal layers of tulle to create a lilac tone that looked different depending on the light. It had handbeaded florals, which added a dainty yet modern touch. I chose long sleeves as the beadwork was incredible. I absolutely loved my dress and felt amazing in it. Wedlocks Bridal Hair styled my hair in a long ponytail with a custom-made pearl headband from Victoria Percival. I chose matching single drop pearl earrings and pink Valentino Rockstud shoes.” Paul and the groomsmen opted for suits from Marc Darcy. “He wanted a checked suit but with a light and summery feel,” explains the bride. “Paul opted for a mid-blue option which had a delicate pink check throughout to match my gown. He stood out from the groomsmen with a block navy waistcoat and accessorised with navy shoes, a tie and a belt. Marc Darcy was great as he was able to get the same design in a variety of sizes, including versions for his pageboys.” “The bridesmaids wore a light pink off-the-shoulder gown from Maya Deluxe,” adds Lisa. “We were able to get the same coloured dress with the same embellishments in a range of styles to suit everyone, including mini-versions for the

younger maids. Bash Parties & Events made gypsophila flower hoops with ribbons for the girls. I wanted to choose something different to traditional bouquets, and the flower hoop was the perfect alternative as it matched the rest of our theme.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We chose to have TheDeadBeats, a local band, as our entertainment,” recalls the bride. “They were amazing and kept the party going. They played a setlist that suited all our guests, and after the wedding, people couldn’t stop talking about how good they were! We were so glad we chose to invest in this aspect of the wedding.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “It was a really emotional day as we had lots of ups and downs in the lead-up,” says Lisa. “It was our third date due to COVID-19, and Paul had to undergo unexpected surgery linked to a previous cancer diagnosis which came out of the blue. We weren’t sure if he would be well enough for the wedding, but thankfully as he was a candidate for a new transformational robotic surgery, he was able to have the operation and be well enough for the day. My grandad was poorly too, and it was undecided whether he would make it, but thankfully he did. It was an emotional day and a huge family celebration. Sadly, my grandad passed away four weeks after the wedding, but the fact he was there made the day even more special, and there certainly wasn’t a dry eye in the house.” Lisa’s sister, the owner of Bash Parties & Events, added a special touch to the day. “It was lovely seeing her work first hand and to see what goes on behind the scenes,” shares the bride. “She was able to achieve our brief, and it turned into more than we could have ever hoped for.” “The speeches were brilliant,” explains Lisa. “One best man had to self-isolate so my sister stepped in and added a speech to the day featuring a video message from Paul Elliott from the Chuckle Brothers. It’s a long-standing joke that goes back to Paul’s teenage nickname, and the best man ended up being the punchline of the joke, which was hilarious. The speeches were focused on the emotional rollercoaster we’ve been on leading up to the day but were the perfect mixture of humour and sentiment.” 41

He offered me golf lessons so he could spend more time with me, and I was impressed when he won a major competition during one of my first shifts. Needless to say, his golf has gone downhill ever since!” Mike proposed during a trip to Barcelona. “He told me to pack a small suitcase as he had booked a surprise weekend away,” shares
the bride. “I packed all my woollies, thinking it would be a weekend in the Lakes but was excited when Mike handed me a boarding pass over the breakfast table. We headed straight to the airport and had our first holiday in Barcelona. READY, SET, How to plan the perfect wedding
A
s a bride-to-be myself, I know first-hand that planning your wedding can be a fun but stressful experience. It can be hard trying to bring your vision to life while also trying to please everyone and pick the perfect suppliers. To help, we’ve spoken to some local experts and asked for their top tips.
PLAN! Scan to view video
The Film Look– This is achieved by careful shot composition and framing, use and manipulation of natural light and colour grading to give the finished film a movie like feel. They may also use a film stock grain to give the video a less digital look. This takes considerable time to edit and will involve adjusting hundreds of individual clips. Story – Your supplier will try to tell your story creatively. This is achieved in several ways; visual narrative by giving thought to shot choice in the edit to tell a story, but also through audio as a narrative, perhaps captured from your ceremony, speeches or readings. Music – This is the other essential part of the puzzle. Just think about your favourite films, where would they be without that music score? How would those films get emotional reactions from the viewers without that music? Music is essential to a great movie and is every bit as important as the visuals. A talented wedding filmmaker will spend hours finding the right piece of music to fit your film to enhance the visuals and story. Julian Voigt | Videographer www.julianvoigtweddingfilms.co.uk

HOW TO CHOOSE A VIDEOGRAPHER
Let’s face it, your wedding day may take years and months to plan, but it goes by so quick! How will you choose to remember and capture all those emotions and the people that come together on what is, for most of us, one of the most important days in your life? The photographer is one of the first things you will think about when it comes to capturing your day, but a videographer is equally as important. A videographer will capture the day, in-between moments and audio that will help keep those memories alive. If you’ve started looking on the internet, then you may be feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of choice available. There are different styles of wedding videos, different lengths and prices that can vary considerably. Perhaps the first thing you need to decide is whether you would be happy with a wedding video or whether you want a wedding film? Aren’t they the same thing I hear you ask? No, not necessarily. When I got married, many years ago now, we hired a videographer and received a two-hour-long VHS tape that was composed of long takes of footage of the build-up to the ceremony, then the whole ceremony and lots of people coming and going and eating cake. The finished video had more of a local news report look and feel to it and was minimally edited with very little post-production other than some music overlay that was very 1990s. Thankfully things have changed, and videographers now have access to better cameras and editing software and thus produce better-looking films. Some offer videos that are minimally post-processed aimed at those on a limited budget or who want a small amount of video content from their wedding day, and others offer wedding films. Films are created to have a cinematic feel or in other words, be movie-like. Here are three things that a cinematic style wedding filmmaker will look to include:

TOP TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR DAY
A lot of people skip hiring a planner, but it helps reduce the stress on your wedding day, so it's definitely worth considering. If you decide to hire a planner, make sure you have a consultation beforehand to ensure they’re the right supplier for you and that they specialised in the type of wedding you want. Here are some of my top tips for planning the perfect wedding: Create a moodboard. Take it to every vendor, so they are all on the same page with your theme and understand what you want from your nuptials. Stay organised. Google Drive is your best friend, or you could get a binder/wedding planner if you prefer something physical rather than digital. It’s important to print out your contracts and keep your lists together so that if anything goes wrong you can always refer back to them. Sit and write down the top three items that matter to you the most. Then talk about them with your partner and make sure you’re on the same page and decide what things you should dedicate your budget to. Consider the weather conditions and have a backup plan if you’re planning to have an outdoor wedding, after all, in the UK, good weather is never guaranteed. Some people move the wedding inside, and some just grab some umbrellas or put up a marquee. Don’t forget, your officiant must agree to this too. Let your bridesmaids show some personality. Choose a colour and let them pick their style. It’s also important to let them pick their hair, make-up and jewellery, especially if they’re footing the bill. If your maids feel comfortable in their appearance, then they are more likely to help out and have a good time. Don’t worry about the number of bridesmaids being equal to the number of groomsmen. This doesn’t matter, and you’ll regret adding someone to either side just for the sake of numbers. Plan to do the toasts 10-15 minutes into dinner. Your maid-of-honour and best man will be thankful to get it over with early, and your guests will be quiet and listen while they are focused on eating. If children are invited to your wedding, create an activity station for them - you could even use these as your wedding favours. Have a list of photographs you would like your photographer to take, and make sure they take the style of photographs you want.

CHOOSING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
My biggest tip is to have the wedding you both want. It’s important to ask questions and advice or recommendations, but you don’t have to do what’s traditional or something you don’t want to do just because family are pressuring you to do it a certain way. It’s your day, and it should represent who you are as a couple. When it comes to choosing a photographer, decide on a budget before you start looking and remember the two things left at the end of your wedding are your marriage and your photos/videos. Look through websites and social media and once you have a shortlist of two or three, meet with them and see if you get along. This is important as you will be spending all of your day with them.

FINDING BRIDESMAID DRESSES
Choosing bridesmaid dresses can be one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning, but it’s also one of the hardest details to pinpoint. With so many factors of the wedding hinging on a coherent colour scheme – many brides choose to let the dresses set the palette to dictate details for the rest of the wedding, including invitations, the cake and flowers. It’s wise to give yourself over a year to plan a wedding as there are so many specifics, although, of course, it’s all down to personal preference! In the world of bridesmaid dresses, it’s important to consider the timescale of getting a unanimous decision from your bridal party as to what style, colour and price point to go for. Be sure to allow enough time to get together to try on the dresses and get those all-important alterations made so that everyone is comfortable on the day. At Maya HQ, we get lots of brides informing us that their bridesmaids are pregnant or are going through a lifestyle change which might mean their size changes before the wedding. Bodies come in a range of wonderful shapes and sizes, but it’s important to remember that clothes need to be designed to fit your body and not the other way round! It’s best to wait until your bridesmaids are ready and happy to shop, this removes any pressure of trying to fit into a dress that was bought months ago. Our dresses are available off-the-peg, eliminating any waiting times for an efficient shopping experience. Make sure each maid tries on a few sizes, opting for petit or tall ranges if they are available from the brand you’re shopping with. A new year means new trends! This year is full of nature-inspired colourways, Bridgerton-esque themes and vintage-style rings, to name but a few. Green lily, desert rose, and blue are just a few colours ticking all the boxes for forecasted trends this year.

PICKING THE RIGHT STATIONERY
The first and most important piece of advice I can give you is that your wedding stationery should reflect you both as a couple. Don’t try and be someone you’re not. Your taste and style should shine through your stationery. Be consistent from your invites through to your menus/signs for the day. Everything should match your vibe and decorations. Stationery is the first part of your wedding that your guests see, so giving them a glimpse of your style is super exciting! If your date and venue is booked, I advise you to get your save the dates out asap, as due to postponements, 2022 and 2023 are big years for wedding suppliers. Sending your save the dates out early, also gives guests plenty of notice to book off holiday and arrange transport etc. When it comes to planning your invites and RSVPs, a handy tip I always say to my couples is to put yourself in your guests’ shoes. What do they need to know about your wedding day, which will not lead them to asking you a billion questions? It’s such an exciting time in your life, and you should cherish every moment from start to finish.

FINDING THE PERFECT RINGS
Here are some of the questions we often get asked by couples planning to buy their wedding jewellery: Is it normal for my partner to not want to wear a ring? Most gents don’t wear jewellery and have never thought about wearing a ring before, so it’s new to them. When I got married 15 years ago, I was the same, however, I couldn’t imagine not wearing it for even a day now. It’s important to see lots of options and to find a style that he loves. I guarantee when he is brought in front of a good collection of rings, he will easily choose the right one for him. What metals are there for gents, and what styles are popular? There are many metals with different properties, and choosing the right one may depend on what they do for a living. For example, there is no point in having a 9K gold ring when you work with your hands all day as an electrician. Seek guidance from a specialist who should be able to go through the options with you. Which style should I put with my engagement ring? I find that if you take the time to try on all the different options, and there are many, then you will eventually be able to rule most out. If you have diamonds on your engagement ring shoulders, normally matching that up is best. Take images on your phone to see it from different perspectives. We all have different styles that we like so don’t get hung up about what’s on Pinterest or what your friends and family will think as it’s only you who will look at it for the rest of your life. How do I find a wedding ring to fit around my engagement ring? Use a CAD specialist, like us, to design your ideal style. Whether you have a family heirloom steeped in history or a unique-shaped ring, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Your ring is scanned in a machine, and a 3D image is taken of your engagement ring; the specialist will then go to work in creating the perfect wedding ring based on your requirements.
What should I budget for my wedding rings? For ladies, prices vary dramatically based on what kind of quality you buy, which metal you have and how much sparkle you fancy. If you would like the same thickness as your engagement ring with some sparkle, I would suggest budgeting around £650 and £950 for 9K gold and between £950 and £1300 for 18K gold and platinum. For gents, prices depend on the metal and weight, from zirconia at £275 to £600 then onto your precious metals like 9K gold from £250 and £700 to 18K gold and platinum coming in between £1100 and £1500 without diamonds. CHOOSING A STRETCHED TENT
Think about how you want your wedding day to feel for you and your guests. This will help decide on how you want a stretched tent to look and be set up. The tents can be designed and arranged in different ways to suit all weddings, from cosy, intimate gatherings to a more spacious al fresco style. usan from Elizabeth Anna Cake Design organised this stunning styled shoot at Albert’s Standish. “We wanted to create something timeless that was simple yet elegant,” says Susan. “The concept was white on white, which played to the strengths of the venue. When planning the shoot, Annalise Rose Photography immediately sprang to mind as her editing style was exactly what we were looking for. Stylist Sarah from Stories of Wedding & Event Hire created a stunning tablescape with clear crystal glassware as far as the eye could see. Sarah has such an eye for detail, which is always evident in all her work. Sarah from Olive Owl Flowers usually specialises in colourful blooms but created a classy minimal look and Lucy McSpirit Design made the most beautiful stationery suite with frosted acrylic. For the cake and dessert table, I designed a contemporary cake showing how different shapes and textures can still make an all-white cake a real showstopper. “Nationally acclaimed make-up artist Daniella Makeup & Hair created classic looks for our bride Rowen and her bridesmaids,” shares Susan. “We chose beautiful white gowns for our models that reflected the simple, elegant and chic look we were going for.” 63

EXPERT ADVICE
THE LOVE OF MY LIFE
www.tomlally.co.uk
How can we make our ceremony personal to us? As a modern celebrant, I always spend time getting to know my couples to create something unique and joyful. The only limitation is your imagination, from fun, traditional, modern to religious, symbolic and quirky, the options are endless. Don’t just think about the ceremony content, keep in mind where it is taking place and if it is somewhere special to you both. Think about the seating layout of your ceremony and talk to your venue about different options - could everyone sit in a circle, so no one has a bad view? When it comes to walking in, mix it up a bit. Walk in alone, with your best friend, together or with your dog. You can involve your guests in symbolic ways with things like unity candles, sand ceremonies, tree planting, ring warming, handfasting or simply by mentioning special people. My favourite part of any ceremony is the bit where I tell all your guests your story, what brought you together and what’s kept you together. A celebrant will help you to create personal vows, as well as suggest appropriate elements that you could include. It doesn’t have to all be serious. Music that makes your guests smile or laugh or sing along always goes down well. Enter to the theme tune to Jurassic Park, if that’s your thing, or get everyone to sing Wonderwall as you leave. LAST NIGHT OF FREEDOM
I want something fun for my stag do. Do you have any ideas? There are lots of options available, our most popular stag activities often include: ❤ A morning of raft building with team games and challenges. ❤ An adrenalin-fuelled afternoon of canyoning with several great jumps and slides into water pools and waterfalls. ❤ We provide all safety kits, social media photos from the day to freely share, warm showers and lunch at an additional cost. ❤ After a day of activities, you could move on to a local pub or restaurant. ❤ Customise your day with fun themes and outfits (safety permitting). Tim Nicholson | www.adventurenorthwest.co.uk
STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD I’m looking for a dress that’s fun and a bit unusual. Do you have any ideas of what I should look for? We often get brides wanting something a bit different to the norm. A great way to achieve this is by looking for an alternative colour to the traditional ivory or white. Many designs are now available in a range of colours, from subtle blush pinks to daring blacks. Considered a tea-length dress. These look fun and quirky, especially when teamed with unusual shoes. A pair of bright coloured heels can tie the whole look together. A huge trend for 2022 is 3D florals, and we can’t get enough of them! Whether it’s a decorated train or the whole dress, these embellishments are a great way to ensure you stand out on your big day. Sarah Betton | www.carolsbridalcarlisle.co.uk 67
JEWEL OF THE AISLE How can I choose sustainable jewellery? Shopping local will help cut down your carbon emissions, and using a bespoke goldsmith, who won’t be buying ready-made jewellery that comes from abroad, is a great way of being more sustainable. We at Jewellery by Michael Kings encourage couples to bring in unused metal to be made into new jewellery, which cuts down on cost and emissions as well as adds a sentimental value to your piece.
BOHO CHIC My wife-to-be and I are planning a boho-themed wedding and aren’t sure where to start. What do you suggest? Start with your colour scheme or theme first as this is the overarching element for the whole wedding. After you have decided on the colours, atmosphere and décor, the rest will fall into place. Your choice of ambience and atmosphere will help guide your choices for table and chair options, how relaxed you want your reception to be, and the venue where you want to celebrate. Answering the below questions might make it easier for you to define your style: ❤ What do you lean towards? Vintage, romantic, natural or colourful? ❤ Where do you vision your nuptials taking place? On the beach, in a garden, barn, tipi, manor, church or a cottage? ❤ What season do you want to get married in? This will guide your choice of an indoor or outdoor venue and help you choose your colour palette. ❤ What would be your choice of food? Do you want a formal wedding breakfast, a buffet-style, a food truck or a specific cuisine? ❤ What décor do you envision? Is it something you want to DIY yourself, or are there certain elements you want to include, such as rugs, carpets, lanterns, macrame, wicker, feathers, dream catchers, greenery or flowers? Planning a wedding is exciting with endless opportunities, so don’t think you have to make up your mind and book all your vendors as soon as you’ve picked a wedding date! We suggest booking your wedding stylist, venue and photographer first. Once you have secured your stylist, it’s a great idea to work together in choosing your other suppliers. By having your stylist with you when choosing your florals, invitations and table décor, you can pick the perfect items to create a matching and cohesive aesthetic throughout the whole day. Zayna Ben | www.zazevents.co.uk 68
PLANNING SOS We want to find a wedding planner to help us create the perfect day. What questions should we ask before booking? Choosing a wedding planner can be a big decision, so you want to make sure you’re hiring the perfect supplier for you. Here are a few questions you should ask before booking: ❤ What is your style, or do you specialise in specific areas? ❤ How would we contact you and when? Is it email, a phone call or a video call? ❤ How often would we have a catch-up meeting to discuss the progress of the wedding? ❤ Have you worked at my venue before? ❤ Is your travel to our venue included in your price, and do we need to pay for your accommodation? ❤ How many hours will you be at the wedding? ❤ What happens if you can’t make it on the day? What is your backup plan? ❤ Will you have an assistant on the day? ❤ Do you charge extra for after hours? ❤ How many weddings do you plan per year? Will there be another wedding you’re planning on the same day as mine? ❤ Do you have a portfolio of previous weddings? You might want to expand on these questions, but use them as a starting point to help you get a feel for their services. Roline Cyriaque | www.4rluxuryevents.com

atalie from Make It So Venue Stylist and Decor Hire was the stylist behind this shoot. She tells us: “Weddings are so personal, and we understand how important the decoration and theme are for the bride and groom. Our whimsical woodland theme was born from our love of literature and the gorgeous English countryside. After all, what’s more perfect than an afternoon spent reading a romantic fairytale in the shade of a moss dappled tree? By crossing A Midsummer Nights Dream with The Secret Garden, we created an intimate space where guests are invited to go on an adventure and unlock a hidden ethereal where love is hanging from every branch and promise is whispered in the clink of each delicate crystal. We love the contradicting presence of the strong wooden details against the fragility of twinkling lights and hanging glass beads surrounded in gossamer tulle. The happy couple are inviting their loved ones to take a stroll in the woods with them and dream of all the beautiful things that can be discovered there.” 71

e’ve been on a rollercoaster of restrictions, social distancing and guidelines over the last few years and as a result, the wedding industry has constantly been adapting. In this feature, we wanted to explore how wedding trends have changed and what’s set to be popular in 2022.
“This year will be full of botanical setups with fairytale lighting and lots of candles. The must-have limewash Chiavari chairs will look great with lots of foliage, greenery and pampas grass.” – Victoria Rawlins from Blossom and Bows Event Hire.

“Here at Words To Glow, we think bespoke backdrops that can be personalised with neon messages, surnames, or Insta-worthy quotes will continue to be popular.” – Jenni Toothill from Words To Glow.
“Sage green was a popular trend in 2021 that will continue into 2022. Couples will embrace the hue and incorporate it into their décor with items such as velvet table cloths and napkin dressings.” – Mel Kilner from Add a Little Sparkle Lancs Ltd.
www.allurevenuestyling.co.uk
“The tick-box exercise of including everything is a thing of the past. Couples are keeping their guest lists lean, and why not? Restrictions during the pandemic have meant that numbers had to be kept smaller, but the trend for this continues, keeping things more personal and lowerkey than ever before. The introduction of elements to the tablescape is definitely on the up! Charger plates, mixed linen and napkins, gold cutlery and glassware are all huge parts of the detailed styling couples are choosing to have. The finer details are becoming much more important.” – Kate from Florence & Vera Events.

“Romantic fresh eucalyptus with David Austin white roses and lots of gorgeous candlelight is a popular look. Barn venues will be decorated with sage green chair drapes and glass standing candles that frame the aisle.” – Jennifer Pritchard from Fleur Designs.
“Lot of couples gravitate to botanical and rustic themes. This seems to stem from the increased desire to be more sustainable and use more natural materials. Pampas grass, eucalyptus and wooden items such as slices or grates are still firm favourites. I expect we will see linens and lace replace the traditional organza and taffeta chair sashes and table runners.” – Dai Watson from Allure Venue Styling. 75

Using sustainable and ethically sourced, British-grown materials, foam-free floral installations or florals which can be used and re-purposed once the day is over, is a very important aspect for a lot of couples. Rented and hired wedding gowns, second-hand gowns and bridal party wear is increasingly popular too.” – Kate from Florence & Vera Events.
“The next series of Netflix’s Bridgerton is set to be released this year, and as a result, I can see wisteria being hugely popular again, especially in lilac, which is tipped to be an on-trend colour.” – Mel from Add a Little Sparkle Lancs Ltd.

“Festoon, vintage filament and string lighting will continue to dominate wedding trends, with outdoor/garden weddings becoming more and more popular.” – Jenni from Words To Glow.
“Some couples love vibrant hues, and this is being displayed through pops of colour rather than an overall shade. Coral pinks, pink-purples and vibrant blues are coming into their own this year.” – Dai from Allure Venue Styling.

VENUE STYLING
“The use of a more natural colour palette is definitely a popular choice, using natural textures, warm colours and linens are becoming increasingly noticeable.” – Kate from Florence & Vera Events.
www.fleurdesigns.co.uk and www.thefrommshoppe.com
“Another interesting change I’ve seen is in the size of events. Since the restrictions have lifted, more and more couples are opting for small, intimate weddings with personal and unique touches. Romantic sentiments such as a type of flower, mementoes from travelling or even remnants of activities are working their way into the design. 2022 is going to be an exceptionally beautiful year for wedding décor, and it’s going to be exciting to see what else pops up.” – Dai from Allure Venue Styling.
“Outdoor ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular, and what’s not to love about getting married in the wilderness alongside nature? The styles we keep seeing within these settings are soft pinks and pale blues, which fit the woodland theme and make it feel somewhat natural. When it comes to bouquets, there are so many different styles and colours to choose from. Everyone loves pampas, and the tones and textures it gives in a bridal bouquet are incredible. The wild bouquet is increasingly popular in nudes and soft peaches with trailing ribbons to add depth to the design.” – Jennifer from Fleur Designs. “Bright, vibrant pops of colour in balloons, ribbons and décor alongside neutral backdrops and classic white lightup letters will be bang on trend.” – Jenni from Words To Glow.
“Our pampas grass wings are our most popular item to hire for 2022/2023. This modern version of a photo booth gives the wow factor and makes a great backdrop.” – Victoria from Blossom and Bows Event Hire.

REGIONAL SHOOT
DAY
Look forward to the warmer months with this styled shoot at The Tipis at Riley Green Images courtesy of Tiffany LS Photography
T
his summer-inspired shoot at The Tipis at Riley Green was put together by Tiffany Skinner from Tiffany LS Photography. “Throughout the planning, directing, and editing process, I had an outdoor wedding at the forefront of my mind using beautiful ivories and greens,” says Tiffany. “I knew that tipi and al fresco weddings are becoming increasingly popular, and I wanted to tie that in with a timeless, elegant feel. The Tipis at Riley Green was the perfect venue for our shoot, and I was fortunate enough to shoot alongside Photos by Issy, who helped me capture the day. When organising the shoot, I shared my vision and moodboards with our wonderfully talented suppliers. I wanted them to have the flexibility to bring their own ideas to the table. “Andrea from Hudson & Thompson Flowers included stunning ivory and green blooms throughout, and Add A Little Sparkle provided a
stunning ceremony set up and décor. Laura of Heavenly Teepees & Parties provided a tipi and an outdoor seating setup. “Laura and David, the bride and groom, were an absolute joy to work with, and the page boy, William, brought so much fun to our shoot. The bridesmaids included Victoria Louise Hair, who stepped in on the day as two of our models couldn’t attend due to testing positive for COVID-19. Victoria’s natural hair colour teamed with the sage green gowns from Kates Dresses was like something out of a fairytale! Another trend is, of course, animals attending weddings. Pets are part of the family, and we wanted to showcase them as part of the shoot. “The day was a huge success and flew by! It was a wonderful chance to catch up with local suppliers, especially after such a difficult time in our industry. I couldn’t have asked for a better team!” 81

Q&A Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
SUMMER LOVING My mum wants to wear a hat or fascinator to go with her summerthemed dress. What colours and styles are popular at the moment? Some amazing colours will be on-trend in summer 2022, from cool pastel shades, such as pistachio, pinks, lilacs and cool blues, to bright and vibrant pinks, blues and greens. Platinum and silver are also set to be popular this year. Many brides and grooms are now considering environmentally-friendly weddings, with ceremonies often taking place outdoors in marquees and tipis. To fit in with the relaxed style, a beautiful natural straw hat with a contrasting parasisal straw crown would look amazing. There are also lots of alternatives to the traditional hat or fascinator for the mother-of-the-bride/groom with a great selection of headpieces that can be designed by a milliner to match your outfit and individual style. I would recommend a sinamay halo headpiece or silk abaca style headpiece with silk or leather flowers. Nicola Mearns | Milliner www.pebellesboutique.co.uk
MAKING WAVES What should I expect from my hair trial, and is it worth having? I often find myself telling my future brides-to-be that it’s always beneficial to have a hair trial. You should book your trial a couple of months before your wedding, and it should be a relaxing experience where you’ll have the time to discuss all the aspects of your wedding but most importantly how you want to feel and look on your special day. It’s a good idea to have a moodboard containing all the different styles that you like. This will allow you to share your ideas at your trial as trying to describe a hairstyle you have seen can be difficult for the stylist to recreate. Have a picture of your wedding dress with you, as the style of your gown can influence the best way to style your hair. Be sure to take along your veil or any hair accessories that you’re thinking of wearing and hair extensions if you would like to use them on your day. The more prepared you are for your trial, the more successful it will be. You should expect to try at least two hairstyles that are completely different from each other, as this will help make the decision on what style to go with a lot easier. Be sure to say what you like or don’t enjoy about each or if you would like to change certain areas. Not only is a trial good for trying different looks, but it also allows you to build up a good rapport with your chosen supplier and will ensure you both know how you would like the finished style to look on your special day. SMILE FOR THE CAMERA We’re getting married in July, and I’d love my smile to look great without undergoing any invasive treatments. Do you have any suggestions? Having confidence in your smile is important for your wedding day and beyond. Ensure that you do your research to find a reputable dental practice that will care for you and provide a high standard of work. Quality dental practices will have patient testimonials available for you to read, written by patients who have undergone similar treatments so you know what to expect before you attend. Ask if the dental practice has treatment coordinators who you can book an appointment with before seeing a dentist. Treatment coordinators are often highly skilled nurses with extensive knowledge of treatments available to help you achieve the smile you wish for. Ask if the dental practice has an Intra Oral Scanner which can be used to create a noninvasive 3D image of your teeth enabling excellent communication of what is possible to achieve for you with different dental treatments. A good starting point to help give you confidence in your smile for your wedding day can be to have a hygiene treatment to improve the freshness of your breath and polish your teeth. Ask if the dental practice uses Airflow for your hygiene treatment. Airflow treatments have been described as a spa day for your teeth. You can be made a customised home whitening kit to whiten your teeth 96
within seven-10 days to give you a confident, bright smile that can last up to three years. You can then use top-up tubes of whitening gel, which used once or twice per year will keep your smile looking bright and healthy for years to come. Neil Cooper | Dental surgeon www.crossbankdental.com
