HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR The 93rd Oscars recently took place, so we spoke to Simon Sterling, a florist at Direct2Florist in Bolton, to find out how you can create the perfect Oscars-inspired wedding. “This year’s Oscars were an absolute triumph that was brought together beautifully by David Rockwell’s wonderful sense of design,” says Simon. “It was also a key moment for local florists, who were brought on to provide the stunning displays. It really shows how arrangements have the power to transform a space and add a completely new dynamic. If this year’s event has shown us anything, it’s that vibrant colours can be combined in ways that can completely change the feel of any room, so don’t be afraid to experiment! Try adding a touch of green, combining different textures and use unexpected elements to create depth.” Visit www.direct2florist.co.uk to find out more about Direct2Florist. 10

CITY OF MANCHESTER

www.babbphoto.com

HOPE MILL THEATRE, M4 7JA 0161 275 9141 | www.hopemilltheatre.co.uk Nestled into Ancoat’s industrial landscape, the contrast of old mills, factories and canal networks against the striking modern architecture creates a charming setting for Hope Mill Theatre. Just a stone’s throw away from Manchester city centre, this epitome of old meets new is well connected and a vibrant place to host a wedding. The Grade II* listed building is a repurposed cotton mill with iconic red brick peppered with industrial sash windows that line the approach to the venue’s original wooden doors and festoon lit façade. The interior was designed to acknowledge the industrial history that Manchester is famous for. Exposed brickwork and high ceilings create an urban chic backdrop whilst plush fabrics and vintage theatre chairs give a nod to the theatrical repurposing of this grand building. The raw interior is ideal for couples looking for a blank canvas with complete freedom to style the space as they wish.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE Ceremonies can take place inside the former engine room of the mill, now the bar, which has exposed brickwork, an airy atmosphere and a sense of rustic opulence that only requires small embellishments to elevate the space. The room is ideal for more intimate services seating 70 guests comfortably. Inside the theatre is a blank slate with room for 120 loved ones. There are high ceilings with beams, perfect for hanging floral installations and lights. The theatre can easily be transformed into a beautiful reception area to suit any couple’s style, and lighting can be used to create a soft, intimate atmosphere.

WE LOVE... The bar area features original pillars and exposed brickwork. Arches create interest and soften the starkness of the industrial design, and large gold mirrors add sophistication and reflect the warm light from the metallic caged pendants. The entrance hall features a stunning mural giving a nod to the theatrical heart of the building and contrasts the blank canvas of the theatre space. 17

THE PORTICO LIBRARY, M2 3HY 0161 236 6785 | www.theportico.org.uk The Portico Library is a striking Grade II* listed building designed in a Neoclassical Greek revival style. The venue is one of the few surviving Georgian buildings in central Manchester still serving its original purpose. Inside the impressive and enchanting rooms is more than 200 years of history and culture, with a spectacular painted glass dome ceiling surrounded by original Regency-period floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The gallery space features a working wind dial, mural portraits of Milton and Shakespeare and a clock face created by the Big Ben clockmakers. The venue’s façade features impressive original Greek-style columns and classical stone steps.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE Intimate weddings of up to 30 guests take place in the historic Reading Room, followed by a drinks reception under the painted glass dome ceiling with up to 50 loved ones. Due to limited kitchen facilities, the venue cannot host receptions but it’s perfect for gorgeous ceremonies.

WE LOVE... The property contains a unique book collection spanning 450 years, including first editions of works by Charlotte Brontë, Elizabeth Gaskell and Thomas Hardy.

CONCORDE CONFERENCE CENTRE, WA15 8XQ 0161 489 8299 The Hangar is part of the Runway Visitor Park, located in the grounds of Manchester Airport, and is a light and spacious venue spanning over 1,600 square meters. The Manchester Stock Exchange was built between 1904 and 1906 using a design by Bradshaw Gass and Hope and was opened ceremoniously on the 13th December, 1906. This exquisite example of Edwardian Baroque architecture was purpose-built as a symbol of confidence in the future of Manchester, which at the time was the 9th most popular city in the world. ONCE UPON

Keen to tie the knot, Emily and Tom had a romantic celebration at The Portico Library and Seven Bro7hers Brewing Co Images courtesy of Maddie Farris Photography

W

e met in August 2015,” says Emily. “We were set up by my best woman, Amy, and had our first date at the Deaf Institute and Gorilla in Manchester, where we talked about our love of podcasts and books.” Tom proposed to Emily during a holiday to Crete in April 2018. “He had intended to propose over a romantic breakfast on the balcony of our Airbnb, but sadly noisy construction work derailed his plan,” shares the bride. “Tom ended up proposing in the living room of the apartment before we went on a wine tasting, but the square box poking out of his pocket had given away what was about to happen!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

27

Tom and I wanted a relaxed atmosphere for our reception, and Seven Bro7hers Brewing Co was perfect for both a casual meal and disco. The in-house chef made sharing platters for our starter, chicken and chorizo stew for the main and a selection of desserts to finish.

We’re both avid readers so getting married surrounded by books at The Portico Library was perfect for us.

Our centrepieces were cactuses, flowers and fairylights placed inside glass bottles.

Northern Flower created my beautiful bouquet, and the table decorations were put together by my mum and best woman.

Instead of a traditional cake, we had a cheese tower from The Cheese Hamlet.

28

I made the table plan using stationery from Papier.

REAL WEDDINGS

My dress was from Jdezire in Lincoln. I accessorised with a navy kimono from Anthropologie.

Tom chose a burgundy Red Herring suit from Debenhams. The best woman wore a navy sequinned dress from ASOS.

We felt excited, although there were some nerves about the staging of the day, we couldn’t wait to become husband and wife.

We didn’t have any entertainment, though we worked very hard on our Spotify playlist that kept our guests on the dancefloor all night.

The speeches were all wonderful and made us appreciate more than ever how fortunate we are to have such incredible family and friends.

29

Unfortunately, our singalongs caused some disturbances to local residents, which culminated in a visit from the noise complaints team at Manchester City Council. The unfortunate council employee only realised upon seeing me in my dress what sort of event he had to shut down. However, at this point, our wonderful day was already coming to its natural conclusion, and we were immediately aware that having our wedding shut down by the council would be a brilliant story.

For our honeymoon, we spent five nights in Malta. We planned it together and had a lovely time at the spa and visited several excellent restaurants.

The love of my life

REAL WEDDINGS

E

mili and Ben met online. “We started talking on a Christian dating site,” says Emili. “We had similar interests and seemed to talk for ages! On our first date, Ben took me to three different restaurants, one for each course. It was very well thought out, and we had a lovely time. Ben asked me to marry him on 29th July, 2019 at Aira Force in the Lake District. We had been pragmatic about the subject of marriage, however, the day itself was a lovely surprise!”

SETTING THE SCENE “We loved the traditional style of St Peter’s Church, and when visiting, we found that they were a lovely group of people,” shares the bride. “Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we weren’t able to host a reception, so we decided to visit Avenham Park. Some of our friends and family joined us in groups of six, which created a lovely atmosphere.” The happy couple gave each group of six a bag filled with hand sanitiser, champagne, glasses, napkins and seed packets. “We tried to go with local suppliers and enlist the help of friends to make the day special,” explains Emili. “I handmade a lot of the decorations, which gave me something to keep my mind off the ever-changing restrictions, and the confetti holders were made by the children that I teach.” Emili and Ben purchased a three-tier cake from Sara’s Cake Heaven. “It was made up of lemon, vanilla and chocolate,” says the bride. “The bake was decorated to look like a silver birch with purple flowers to reflect the natural surroundings. We also chose a wonderful brownie tower from BKD, with lots of personalised touches.” “My friend, Kylie, came round and helped me make all of the bouquets and buttonholes,” adds Emili. “We used a purple and white theme with lots of roses and lavender wrapped in hessian and ribbons.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a Rebecca Ingram dress supplied by Frothimoon in Kendal,” shares the bride. “It was a long, flowy design with glistening netting that sparkled in the sun.” Ben chose a grey longline suit from Moss Bros. To tie the look together, the wedding party opted for matching ties. “I gave the bridesmaids a colour scheme of cool purple and asked them to buy dresses that they would feel comfortable in,” explains Emili. “They fitted in nicely with the overall theme, and the girls looked great.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “Our original plan was to have a wedding reception for 400 guests, so it was a bit of a shock to go from that to 30 people at the ceremony only,” says Emili. “We were keen to start our life as a married couple, so we live-streamed the service and the speeches and cake cutting from the park so we could involve as many people as possible.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “Considering all the changes we had to make last-minute, we were relaxed and content in the knowledge that we were husband and wife in the eyes of God,” recalls Emili. “Of course, the ceremony 33

was the best part, and I cried happy tears throughout the whole thing. When we arrived at the park, it was amazing seeing all our friends and family dotted around. We had lots of cheering and well wishes from random members of the public, which made our day.” The lovebirds had the perfect wedding, thanks to their suppliers and family. “There were so many people who helped us make it an exciting and memorable day,” shares the bride. “From the beginning, Amanda Dowson, the owner of our original ceremony venue, was so supportive and my unofficial wedding planner. Christina from Fish 2 Photography kept me calm and grounded throughout all the changes. The Martins and 34

people from Christ Central Preston organised the meeting in the park. Lastly, Luke Yates, one of Ben’s groomsmen, played the piano at the church, and Stewart Riley and Ben Horn organised all the tech support and live-stream. It was so great to have a group of people who were so happy to help. The day was the epitome of community built friendships.”

HONEYMOON “We booked an upcycled shipping container at Scalpsie Bay on the Isle of Bute in Scotland,” adds Emili. “We stayed there just under a week and had a wonderful time relaxing in the countryside.”

mily and Thomas have known each other since they were children. “We attended the same nursery and secondary school,” says Emily. “We didn’t meet properly until sixth form, where we quickly started dating and ended up attending the same university. FLOWERS

Q – How long before the wedding should couples get in touch? Our diary is open right up to summer 2023. It’s really important to book your suppliers as soon as you have booked your venue, especially if you’re getting married during peak wedding season. With so many nuptials sadly being postponed last year, suppliers are booking up quickly, so I would say don’t leave it too late! Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is, of course, meeting and getting to know my lovely couples, especially if they say those five magic words “I’d like all British flowers”, which is music to my ears! I’m passionate about supporting our local growers and love to grow some of my own blooms. I also love choosing and create your arrangements and sometimes get a little lost in it, and nobody will hear or see me for hours. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for their wedding flowers? Look at their style. Does it work well with your vision for your day? Flowers are art, after all, and every florist is different! If you’re offered a free consultation, take it! This is by far the best way to get to know if your supplier is the right fit for you as a couple. Lastly, and more importantly, enjoy the process!

www.daisychainphotography1.co.uk

Q – What services do you offer? We offer a small number of elopement and wedding packages and fully bespoke designs. Your nuptials will be our sole priority and only booking on that particular day. All of our products are foam and single-use plastic-free, and we try to be as environmentally conscious as possible by repurposing our materials, avoiding plastic waste and sourcing our flowers locally as much as we can!

www.daisychainphotography1.co.uk

Q – Tell us about your company. Seed & Wild is a bespoke wedding florist based in the little village of Warton on Lancashire’s Fylde Coast. We’re relatively new to the industry, having planned to launch right at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic. It slowed us down for sure but definitely didn’t stop us from doing what we love! Our floral designs are delicate and graceful, focusing on the finest details and interesting textures. Purposeful details like a scent heavily influence our arrangements, helping us to create meaningful memories for years to come. Just catching the smell of sweet peas or garden roses in the air always brings back feelings of nostalgia for me, and I hope to do the same for you.

I’m also a florist, and I can create bouquets, buttonholes, centrepieces, arches and thank you posies. I deliver all over Lancashire, Cumbria and The Lake District. Q – How long before the wedding should couples get in touch? The best time to book your flowers and venue décor is when you have decided on your overall theme and colour scheme, that way, we can work together to bring your ideas to life. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? I love what I do, and I hope it shows in my work. I adore everything about weddings and that I get to be a part of your special day, it’s the most rewarding part of the job.

Q – Tell us about your company. Nestled in the heart of Kendal, we specialise in weddings and British blooms for any budget. Creating flowers in line with nature’s rhythm in a fine art, loose style. Q – What services do you offer? Bespoke weddings, editorial flowers, fabulous plants and a specialist consultation area that is used to meet with several wedding suppliers at once, saving a lot of time and stress. Q – How long before the wedding should couples get in touch? If the wedding is small, anytime up to a few weeks or days. If the look required is British and eclectic, then up to a year so the blooms can be planned and grown by us on our acre plot. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Being able to bring my children to work every day. I love having the freedom to be creative and a full time working mum. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for their wedding flowers? Foliage isn’t cheaper. Seasonal flowers are always more expensive, as it means they’re British. Florists won’t undercut each other. Get a quote on whose style you love and nothing more. Anyone who tells you these two myths about wedding flowers isn’t a florist.

FLOWERS MEET BETHANY BYRNE FROM BETHANY @ FLOWERS BY JEMMA HOLMES 01617 372 322 | www.flowersbyjemmaholmes.co.uk Q – Tell us about your company. Our company was established in 2006 and has since become one of Manchester’s biggest wedding florists. We have a small team of fully trained professionals delivering a quality service at keen prices. We pride ourselves on being able to cater for almost any size and style of event, and we love doing it. Q – What services do you offer? We offer floral services from gifts to weddings and corporate events across the UK. We specialise in large celebrations creating amazing designs to dress your spectacular venue. Q – How long before the wedding should couples get in touch? We advise all couples to book their wedding florist as soon as they have a date, venue and style for the wedding. We have bookings sometimes three years in advance and most wedding florist will book up quickly for popular dates. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? It has to be delivering the bridal bouquets and buttonholes to the room on the morning of the wedding whilst the bride is in hair and make-up. Seeing their ideas in real life can be amazing, and we love creating those memories.

Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for their wedding flowers? Have an idea in mind, even if it’s just a colour or a particular flower you like. It will give your florist a base to start from and help them understand your tastes. Also, expressing a budget at the beginning doesn’t mean you’re going to get extremely high prices, but it allows your supplier to understand the items they can advise that will work within your price range.

MEET LAURA MACPHERSON FROM LAUREL SILK FLORIST 07950 227 094 | www.laurelsilkflorist.com Q – Tell us about your company. Laurel Silk Florist specialises in faux flower bouquets and arrangements for weddings and special occasions. All my designs are made with high-quality materials, and I love to create products that look as realistic as possible. One of the great benefits of silk arrangements is that they last for many years, making them a special keepsake. As a trained florist with more than 12 years of experience, I have worked with many couples to create the perfect design for their special day. Q – What services do you offer? I can provide silk flower designs for the bridal party, including bouquets, buttonholes, corsages, hair flowers/crowns, flowergirl wands and much more. I also create custom centrepieces, garlands, ceremony flowers and top table arrangements styled to suit your theme and colour scheme. I have a range of designs available on my website, but I also love to work with couples to make custom packages. All of my products can be posted across the UK, which is ideal for couples who want to do the decorations themselves or are travelling abroad for a destination wedding. Q – How long before the wedding should couples get in touch? The minimum time I recommend is eight weeks

before the wedding day, but ideally, get in touch around six to 12 months before to allow plenty of time to create the designs, especially for large wedding packages. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? I love getting feedback from my couples when their flowers arrive and after their special day. I’ve had lots of lovely messages to say that the guests were amazed when they found out that the flowers weren’t real. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for their wedding flowers? My top tip would be to look for a florist whose work reflects the style of your wedding. For example, I feel my work is romantic and gardeninspired, but I also like to make quite rustic-style bouquets. When you first contact your supplier, it’s always useful to send a few pictures of bouquets and arrangements you like as well as the colour scheme you’re planning for the wedding. 47

TOPIC: wedding worries Our experts solve your problems

PLANNING SOS Q – I’m feeling overwhelmed by the planning process. What are your top tips for creating a stress-free wedding? Firstly, a very big congratulations on your engagement! This time truly is a muddle of emotions, and as much as you’re bursting with happiness, it’s only natural to feel a little overwhelmed. My biggest tip is to try and write everything down, even if at first it seems scary, write down everything you want your special day to feel like, a to-do list and any venues or inspiration you may have. Get it all down on paper, and then start to organise it from there. By having it all laid out in front of you, it allows you a little more headspace! Try to prioritise what you would like to get done and give yourself small tasks each week, so it doesn’t feel like you have to do everything at once. By ticking things off your list, you will start to feel super productive and energised to do even more. The main thing to remember is to enjoy every single moment, it’s a special time and goes by in the blink of an eye, so try to embrace it.

MUSIC TO MY EARS Q – My wife-to-be and I are looking for entertainment that will keep our guests happy throughout the day. Do you have any suggestions? Whether you’re planning an upbeat, vibrant wedding or a more relaxed affair, a string quartet can adapt to any occasion. Here at Harmony String Quartet, we pride ourselves on having an extensive repertoire of more than 500 songs. We can provide a jukebox service where you and your guests pick songs on the day, or you can create your own bespoke playlist. Either way, you will hear some of your favourite tunes played as you’ve never heard them before.

Alicia James | Wedding planner www.aliciamarieweddings.co.uk

DRINK IT ALL IN Q – My hubby-to-be and I are thinking of hiring a drinks company for our upcoming nuptials, but there are so many to choose from! What should we do before booking? Your decision on any supplier should be based on your research and discussions with them. Have a look across their social media and websites to read past reviews and testimonials. Make sure the images belong to them and are not just stock pictures that look good! A decent supplier will want to talk to you to find out your ideas, offer suggestions and may even provide references so you can speak to a couple they have worked with before. A meet up before any event is a must, and ask to sample the fizz/wine. If they create a good first impression on you, then they will likely do the same for your guests on the big day.

SUMMER LOVING

www.darklemoner.co.uk

Q – We’re having a summer wedding and want to capture some seasonal photographs. Do you have any suggestions on how we can do this? During the summer months, the hours of daylight are longer, so make good use of it, especially the lighting around sunset, also known as the golden hour, which will create some beautiful warm tones and soft-lit imagery. ♥ Wearing light, airy and flowy fabrics will work well for a summer theme, as well as keeping everyone cool. ♥ Include seasonal items such as parasols, sunglasses and seasonal flowers that will not wilt in the heat, like orchids, sunflowers or roses. ♥ Capture shots of your guests enjoying refreshing cocktails or grabbing a beer from an ice bucket. ♥ If the British weather is on your side, then your big day might be an outdoor celebration. Garden games like croquet, Jenga or even an egg and spoon race will provide a fun and playful backdrop. ♥ Create a dessert station or hire an ice cream van. ♥ As the night sets in, why not provide some sparklers? DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY

Q – Is a pre-wedding shoot worth the money, and what should we expect? The quick answer is yes! Lots of photographers will say that they are a fantastic way for you to get to know your supplier before the big day. Pre-wedding shoots can be a great introduction to working together as the last thing you want is someone you’ve barely met popping a camera in your face on your wedding day. The majority of people find having their picture taken a less-than-natural experience, and one of my aims with a pre-shoot is for you to be at ease and to see me as a friend with a camera rather than paparazzi. That aside, what I feel pre-wedding shoots are really all about is the anticipation of the wedding day and celebrating that journey. Like couple shots on the actual day, these are often quiet, romantic moments in the midst of the beautiful craziness of it all. With so many aspects to plan and consider, a pre-shoot can be an excuse to spend some time together building new memories. Choose somewhere special for the location. It could be where you proposed, a view that you both love or a place you’ve been meaning to visit. Treat it like a date and enjoy your time together and most importantly, make it yours! Bring your dog, climb a mountain or toast with your favourite drinks. At de la Mare Creative, pre-shoots are included in all of our wedding options, and so there is no extra investment. If, however, you aren’t quite ready to book your wedding photography – then you can always book a shoot and expect to have fun, spend time as a couple and take some beautiful photographs.

Q –What are the benefits of hiring a DJ and what should we ask before booking? The main benefit of booking a DJ is the fact that you have someone there to play the songs you like. They also have a huge catalogue of music and can provide a sound system and lighting to help create a party vibe. Before booking, ask yourself will you dance all night? If so, choose specific songs and a DJ you really want. If not, opt for a DJ that will please the biggest percentage of your guests. At the end of the day, if your friends and family are having fun, it will keep you smiling and happy. If your loved ones aren’t enjoying the tunes, then there will be an empty dancefloor and no atmosphere. Take your time choosing a DJ. They will be with you for five to seven hours which may not sound like a lot, but if it’s seven hours of music you don’t like, then it could ruin your day. You may want to give your DJ a setlist or at the very least give them your first dance song plus a few favourites, and don’t forget to tell them the songs you don’t like. Make sure you know what you’re getting. Do your social media research, check their reviews, and, if possible, seek testimonials from your venue and friends that may have used them. Most wedding DJs will be getting booked up six to 24 months in advance. If you want the perfect supplier, get organised fast. Wedding entertainment is now in the top 10 things that couples book first. Will the setup match your décor? If you’re spent thousands on making sure your venue looks just how you imagined, don’t scrimp on a cheap DJ with poor-looking equipment, which will ruin the aesthetics of your wedding.

o celebrate the re-launch of weddings, a team of local suppliers came together to create these gorgeous images at The Gibbon Bridge Hotel. Alicia Marie Weddings and Chelsea from Seed & Wild tell us more: “The venue has a beautiful English country garden and our aim was to enhance the ambience through the use of delicate fresh florals while introducing subtle touches of luxury with gold cutlery and crystal glassware. Embracing a seasonal colour palette, we introduced pops of pale yellow, crisp white and soft golds to create a sense of spring.”

Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

L

ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup

plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and overbudgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.

THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers and budget, we began the exciting part – looking 56

at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY

Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.

Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.

Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.

We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.

Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!

This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 57

REGIONAL SHOOT

A team of local suppliers teamed up to create this eco-friendly shoot at the Barn in the Fells Images courtesy of Cath Prescott Photography

T

he Lake District is famous for its scenery, welcoming locals and popping the question. To celebrate its beauty, a group of suppliers teamed up to create this shoot. Planner, stylist and venue wedding manager Annabel tells us more: “The Barn in the Fells has recently opened and already has bookings from couples who have got engaged on the surrounding fell tops! This family-owned farm has moved the sheep out and has been busy creating a space for some glorious, rural events. We wanted to highlight that a wedding can be planetfriendly with hiring not buying, local not shipped in, seasonal and natural products. Every choice we make when creating a wedding should be put through a green filter. Can our choices be better for the planet? I believe they always can, from simple elements like recycled paper to hiring décor instead of buying it. “This shoot was styled to showcase the Lakeland slate that covers the barn. The pastels blend well while enhancing the eye-catching table settings, massive beams and wonderful lighting. The models showcased romance and flirty humour, even getting some attention from a newborn lamb! Szintia and Chris took to their first modelling experience with ease, bringing love and laughter to the day. The outfits from Carol’s Bridal Boutique were chosen to stand out against the strong lines of the barn and surrounding fells. For this shoot, we all wanted to highlight this stunning space but also show what can be done with sustainability in mind and without compromising the design.” 59 

SILKY SMOOTH

I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my super-cute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks

78

INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.

A

ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs eventready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.

I would say, start with the neckline of your desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.

If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their big-day, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.

What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.

Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.

How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.

What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.

What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.

How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?

For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk

What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 79

STRUT YOUR STUFF How to create the perfect wedding look

W Pastel tones

e’ve asked local suppliers to send in some of their top tips for incorporating a theme or colour scheme into your big-day style.

Pastel-themed weddings are an up-and-coming trend that we’re seeing a lot of here at Your North West Wedding, so we asked make-up artist, Amy Brown (www.amybrown-makeup.co.uk) how to incorporate pastel shades into your make-up. Amy says: 2021 is all about pastels, which can easily be incorporated into your theme through your flowers and make-up. A pop of colour can be applied subtly through your eye shadow or liner, allowing you to keep the rest of your make-up bridal. These hues go well with a light liquid blush and soft lip, creating a fresh look. Those of you wanting a more vibrant style could go for a shimmer pigmented product. I recommend MAC Pigment Colour Powder or the Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow, both are great for adding a hint of colour to your day. These products, alongside many others, can be purchased at www.lookfantastic.com, and you can receive 20 per cent off using the code LFTFAMYBROWN.

If you want an on-trend design that will make your big day stand out, then look no further than a pastel palette. ❤ Go against tradition with a coloured wedding dress or add a pastel tulle skirt over the top of your gown. This can then be removed later in the evening to create a completely different style. ❤ Add a pop of colour through your veil or by adding a belt. ❤ A bespoke creation may be the best option for you but take into consideration the time scale and money involved. Most bridal boutiques suggest you visit up to a year before your wedding, but if you’re after a tailored creation, it may be worth booking an appointment as soon as possible to ensure you get exactly what you’re looking for.

The great outdoors Wedding planner, Deanna Melia from Your Forever After (www.yourforeverafter.co.uk) gives her top tips for creating a nature-inspired celebration. Deanna says: Are you having a themed wedding? Whether you choose a rustic, garden, bohemian or Victorian theme, you need to ensure that you incorporate it into your overall look. It will most certainly take a lot of thought and time deciding on a theme, but the results will definitely pay off.

DÉCOR

This includes anything from menus, table names/numbers to centrepieces. For example, if you plan on having a garden wedding, you could use softcoloured flowers with lots of greenery and use the same blooms in your bouquet to bring the two elements together. Opt for white plates and tablecloths and pastel placemats to break up the hues and to add a more subtle tone. Try having menus in a floral design that match your bouquet, and each table name/number a specific colour. Decorate the aisle with dried petals instead of confetti as they are biodegradable, meaning that there will be no harm to the environment in terms of pollution. They also look and smell beautiful and are super affordable! A wedding arch can be decorated with the same blooms as your bouquet. Drape them in between white, chiffon fabric to bring out the tones of the flowers and to add cleanliness to the look.

HAIR AND MAKE-UP

For a garden wedding, the half up and half down look or a classic bun with plaits is the way to go. They look beautiful, elegant and can work with a tiara, flower crown or clip. Make sure you go to a hair stylist and get a trial before your wedding day, after all, what works for one person may not work for another, so trial and error is your best friend. For an outdoor wedding, it's best to go with a natural look and incorporate hints of your colour scheme. For example, if you were to have a pastel pallet, then you would go for softer shades, whereas if you have bold hues like wine red and navy blue, you might go for heavier make-up. Again, make sure you go for trials as you may have something in mind but then hate it during your trial. Choosing a reliable and reputable artist is important to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day.

VENUE

If you want a specific theme for your wedding, your venue choice is crucial. It should be the first thing you choose when it comes to your wedding day as everything else is usually planned around it. For outdoor celebrations, make sure your property has a backup option in case it rains, such as an event tent put up outside a covered area to protect you and your guests from the weather. 82

DRESS AND SHOES

Saying yes to the dress can be difficult as many brides want to go for looks over practicality. For example, if you’ve chosen to have an outdoor wedding in January in the UK, it’s likely going to rain, which means that a design with a long trail probably isn’t going to be very practical and will get dirty very quickly. This is by no means a statement to stop you from getting that style but maybe have a detachable trail so that when you’re not on a beautifully protected wedding aisle, it doesn’t get ruined. Have a pair of flat shoes to hand, as you never know what the weather is going to do, and slim heels will most certainly sink into the mud, which can be disastrous, so chunky heels, kitten heels or flat shoes will be your best friend! Don’t forget, the most important thing is that you are comfortable and it makes you happy because after all, it’s going to be one of the most wonderful days of your life. No matter what theme you go with, always remember, sometimes less is more.

LOOKING YOUR FLOWERS BEST

Vintage romance Make-up artist, Emma Askew (www.emmaaskew.com) tells us how you can incorporate a vintage theme into your make-up. Emma says: Vintage-inspired weddings are one of the most fun make-up looks to create. Here are some of my top tips: Glowing skin. Make-up will only sit well if it has a good base. Water will be your best friend so keep hydrated running up to your big day. The vintage look is all about porcelain skin, so invest in a quality long-wearing foundation such as Estee Lauder Double Wear which will see you right through the day and into the evening. Keep your skin matte and finish with a translucent pressed or loose powder to lock your make-up into place. Laura Mercier does an excellent one that will last you well beyond your big day. Create the perfect eyebrows. It’s amazing how different you can look with good or bad brows. Make sure yours are well-groomed and shaped. Vintage brows are strong and immaculate. Winged eyeliner. This is synonymous with the vintage look, and the key is to practice, practice, practice! Try a black liquid eyeliner pen such as the L’Oreal Perfect Slim. It’s super easy to use, waterproof, and one of the easiest ways to achieve wings. If you’re worried about straight lines, you can purchase templates to pop next to your eye or use a piece of sellotape that will do a similar thing. Lips. Red lips are a must when it comes to recreating that vintage look but be aware this look is high maintenance for a wedding day. Ask your maidof-honour to be on lipstick duty, as you don’t want the dreaded red ring around your lips showing up on your photos. Regular application will make sure your pout is picture perfect!

Q&A

Our local expert offers advice on how to look your big-day best A SMOOTH COMPLEXION Q – How do I get my skin looking its best in the run-up to my big day? I’m a firm believer that what you put into your body shows on the outside, so good skin comes from within! Here are some of my top tips for creating a flawless look: ♥ Eat well – lots of greens and raw vegetables. ♥ Regular exercise, the type that gets you really sweaty, it’s great for your complexion, and your pores will love you for it. ♥ Drink plenty of water! Try to avoid or reduce alcohol at least a week before the wedding as it dehydrates the skin. ♥ Sleep as much as you can in the run-up. No matter how many magic eye potions and masks you use, lack of sleep always shows! If you wake up with puffy eyes on the day, pop eye masks on, or simply hold a couple of cold teaspoons under your eyes for a minute or two. ♥ Exfoliate a couple of times each week. My favourite rinse-off product is the Sisley Buff and Wash Facial Gel. You can use toners too, such as the Pixi Glow Tonic. For extremely sensitive skin, just use a flannel or muslin cloth to massage whilst cleansing. ♥ Weekly face masks will hydrate, firm and draw out impurities. ♥ For a perfect base, spritz LA Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water before applying a light moisturiser. Followed by a good primer. My favourites are Emma Hardie Protect and Prime for normal to dry skin, Bobbi Brown’s Primer Plus Production for normal skin types and By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Primer for oily complexions. ♥ My go-to foundations are Nars Sheer Glow and By Terry Cover-Expert. Work from the centre of your face outwards and use a buffing brush to ensure an even finish. Conceal in areas where needed and set with a colourless powder such as the By Terry Hydra Powder or a setting spray. Ely | Hair and make-up artist www.hairmakeupely.com
