I

t dawned on me a few weeks ago that this is my final issue before I become a married woman – it still feels weird saying that! Our July 2022 wedding is just around the corner, and I don’t know where the time has gone. I’ve just had my final dress fitting, my hair and make-up trial and confirmed all the last-minute details but I still feel like I’m forgetting something! My partner and I are planning to sit down together at the end of the month and iron out all the small details so we can spend the next few weeks relaxing. We were finally able to notice this month, which was a big relief. Our local registry office is still overwhelmed by the backlog caused by the pandemic and is only taking bookings for weddings three months in advance, so we’ve had to wait until now to book our appointment, but thankfully it all went well. If you’re due to tie the knot soon, keep checking your council’s website for availability, as appointments are hard to come by. This issue, to help you on your planning journey, we’ve put together showstopping features focusing on flowers and looking your best. We’re also looking at venues in Manchester, the latest fashion trends and must-see honeymoon destinations. You can submit your wedding or styled shoot via email at melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com or at www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

Feathers & Florence, a bridal studio in the Ribble Valley, has opened its doors for the first time with part of its profits going to help end period poverty. The owners, Liam and Melissa, tell us more: “An urge to help underprivileged women planning their weddings helped us launch Feathers & Florence; a tranquil, intimate and inspiring bridal studio in Longridge, Lancashire. Our aim is to offer a safe and calming space to try on beautiful boho-inspired dresses. The collection has been curated to display the best in luxury feminine bridalwear. Every dress has something unexpected to offer, with investments starting at £1,500. We have also made an effort to source gowns made from recycled materials wherever possible, with designers like Stephanie Allin, Nicole Milano and Savin London gracing the studio hangers.” Liam and Melissa wanted their business venture to be more than just a afternoon retreat for brides-to-be. From the very beginning, supporting a higher cause has been high on their priority list. This is why Feathers & Florence have pledged to donate 1 per cent of profits to end period poverty, and get women and girls access to period products. A THEME COME TRUE

GLORIOUS GARDENS With the news that outdoor weddings at licensed venues in England and Wales will be now legalised permanently, The Belsfield Hotel, located in the Lake District, has launched a range of new packages for 2022 and 2023 to help couples create a day to remember. Each package includes the use of the hotel’s rooms and suites for an indoor ceremony, however, couples are also allowed to take their ceremony outside, surrounded by an area of natural beauty and England’s largest lake, Lake Windermere. The Belsfield Hotel is an idyllic place to say ‘I do’, to capture those all-important photos in its six acres of landscaped gardens and enjoy a glass of champagne with loved ones on your special day. The hotel has a dedicated wedding team who are experts in bringing ideas to life and a range of packages to help create a truly outstanding event for couples and their guests. Check out www.thebelsfieldhotel.com for more information.

As part of their 2022 expansion, Words To Glow, a Manchester-based wedding and event décor company, have invested in a number of new décor items to add to its already vast stock list. Now available to rent either solely or alongside their popular 4ft light up letters are: two new shimmer wall backdrops in gold and iridescent, available in various sizes, new multi-colour neon signs including ‘Let’s Party’ and ‘You Complete Me’ to complement their wide choice of backdrops and a champagne foliage wall, available in two sizes, with signature copper wording. After being taken over in 2020 by event production company Sterling Event Group, Words to Glow has grown in size, and now provides a wide range of lightup dance floors, alongside bespoke draping, staging and a large variety of lighting, light-up letters and décor. SHOW ALERT!

www.claregelderdphotography.co.uk

Cumbria’s Premier Wedding Show is back! After the huge success of its February show, with almost 700 visitors, the team have announced its next show will be taking place on 25th September, 2022, between 11am and 4pm. “The wedding and event industry has suffered huge financial, emotional, and devastating loss over the previous two years and the show certainly brought in new business, opened the doors for many exhibitors and the feedback has been overwhelming,” said organisers Carol Milnes and Carol Waggott, the two Carlisle business women behind the event. “We received so many wonderful comments and feedback and we are committed to continue supporting and helping a varied selection of businesses by engaging with visitors to gain exposure in a fun and vibrant atmosphere, and to support brides and grooms to find their dream suppliers. We have the drive and passion to raise the profile of the great wedding businesses we have in this beautiful county.” Couples will be able to enjoy a fizz reception, each bride will receive a goody bag on arrival and there’s even a wedding competition and catwalk show. PLANNED TO PERFECTION Your Forever After is a new and upcoming wedding planning and coordinating business that specialises in outdoor weddings. The team are currently offering three people their services for free – all they have to do is pay for the cost of the wedding itself. “After such a tough year, with costs rising and COVID-19, we want to give three wonderful couples the wedding of their dreams without dealing with the stress involved with wedding planning,” says owner Deanna Melia. “This service includes full planning, so all the couple needs to do is email us at yourforeverafter@outlook.com or contact us through our website www.yourforeverafter.co.uk and chat with us to see if we would be the right fit for the wedding they desire. We offer on the day coordination, partial planning, full planning and have added budget planning onto the list of services that we provide which is super exciting. “I have recently become certified in business after completing a diploma, and I have become part of the chamber of commerce. I’m so excited to hear about our soon-to-be newlyweds and can’t wait to make people’s dreams come true.”

FEELING LUCKY Rachael de la Mare, a wedding photographer based in Penrith, Cumbria, is supporting Hospice at Home’s 25th Anniversary Raffle. Rachael tells us: “When I think of wedding days, the first word that comes to mind is love. It sounds a little trite, but it’s 100 per cent true, and it extends beyond the couple as weddings are a celebration of family and friends. For me, family is a massive part of what I love to capture in my work, and it’s one of the reasons I’m so pleased to be supporting Hospice at Home’s 25th Anniversary Raffle. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Hospice at Home for a number of years – from promotional films and photography to helping to sell sunflowers at Kendal Calling, and I’m always amazed at the wonderful work they do. A sitting voucher and framed print will be one of the prizes in the raffle, which will run until the 24th August, 2022.” To find out more about Rachael, visit www.delamare-creative.co.uk and to sign up to the raffle, visit www.hospiceathome.co.uk

REAL WEDDINGS

romance FAIRYTALE

Lucy and Chris had a beautiful celebration at Wyresdale Park Images courtesy of NorthLight Weddings

L

ucy and Chris met in a bar in Manchester. “Chris was out with his friends celebrating his 30th birthday, and I was with my friend,” says Lucy. “His friend approached me and asked if they could come and sit with us. Chris and I hit it off straight away and realised we had the same sense of humour and love of films.” Chris proposed at home. “He wanted to catch me off guard, so he asked the question on a Saturday night during a three-course meal he had cooked for me,” shares the bride. “I was very surprised and obviously overjoyed! Afterwards, we got dolled up and went out to our favourite pub for a bottle of champagne to celebrate.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 27

We wanted somewhere unpretentious with a cosy vibe and Wyresdale Park was perfect.

Our centrepieces were flowers with candlesticks and tea lights. We decorated the rest of the space with Edison bulbs and fairylights.

For our table plan, we hung ribbons with the guests’ names threaded through them. It was painstakingly made by my sister and maid-of-honour. 28

Elizabeth Anna Cake Design provided our three-tier wedding cake, which was vanilla sponge with Biscoff filling, toffee fudge and salted caramel.

The favours were bags of homemade treacle toffee inspired by my late grandma who used to make it for me as a little girl. It was my way of including her in the day.

Chris and I chose various canapés for the drinks reception and had sharing meat platters for the wedding breakfast. Our dessert was a choice of sticky toffee pudding and cheesecake.

REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a Charlotte Balbier dress called Evangeline from The Bridal Barn Boutique. I wanted a relatively simple, flowing Grecian look but with a bit of detail at the top. I accessorised with a hair vine, long veil and earrings from The Bobby Pin.

The bridesmaids chose their dresses to suit their style. I gave them a winter berries colour brief and asked for them to all be the same length.

Chris chose a three-piece suit from Dooley & Rostron.

We booked Dancefloor Couture as our DJ and spent the rest of the day catching up with family and friends.

The ceremony was so romantic and fun. It felt like we laughed a lot. Everyone was in such good spirits after what had been another tough year and it was the best day ever!

We wanted a sparkler shot when it went dark and it ended up being a disaster but hilarious! Almost everyone involved got an injury: my hair got burnt, my sister’s dress had a hole burnt into it and the best man’s wrist got burnt! The mother-of-the-groom was watching from a distance and going wild because she saw sparks lighting at the bottom of my dress! We got some hilarious photos that make us laugh a lot and remind us of one of the funniest parts of the day. 29

My friend Laura wrote a poem about me and Chris that she read out at the ceremony that we loved! Chris’ eight-year-old niece, Esme, also did a reading (with her mum’s help) called I Like You by Sandol Stoddard Warburg. My sister, as a surprise, pinned my late grandma’s broach to the ribbons on my bouquet before handing it to me.

For our honeymoon, we went to Cancun in Mexico for 11 nights. We felt so lucky that we were able to get away during the pandemic. It was absolute paradise from start to finish. We enjoyed the luxury of our hotel and went on a couple of trips, including ziplining through the jungle and cave swimming. We had the best time imaginable!

A never-ending LOVE

Naomi and Darryl celebrated their 10 year anniversary by renewing their vows at Woodlands Country House & Cottage Images courtesy of de la Mare Creative

REAL WEDDINGS

N

aomi and Darryl met in Guernsey in 2010. “We were working in a hospital, and our offices were a couple of doors apart,” says Naomi. “When we married at Oakham School Chapel in 2011, we promised each other that we’d make our vows again when we reached our 10 year anniversary. Little did we know what those 10 years would throw at us: trauma, loss, a miracle baby, long-distance working, two degrees, eight house moves, moving to another country and the pandemic!”

SETTING THE SCENE “We chose navy blue for the core colours of the day as a symbol of our transition, strength and survival,” shares the bride. “We live at Woodlands Country House & Cottage, a classic Victorian rectory with a colourful history. We continue to give love and care to the restoration of this beautiful old building, and we hope that we will soon be able to have other couples enjoy their magical days in this wonderful setting. We were inspired by the era of the house and used the language of flowers throughout the day. We chose Veronica as a symbolic of fortitude, eucalyptus to show strength and healing, lilac roses as a symbol of life, snapdragons to represent inner strength, white roses for unity and fern leaves from the garden for endurance and renewal.” The couple gave their guests small boxes filled with Lindt chocolates as their favours. “We wanted the day to be informal, so we didn’t have a table plan,” explains Naomi. “We used roses from my bouquet as centrepieces which I designed using blooms supplied by Triangle Nursery.” “We had a three-tiered cake finished with vanilla buttercream,” recalls the bride. “It was decorated with a sugar foliage hoop and fresh roses. We chose orange and passion fruit sponge, lemon sponge and a chocolate sponge for the top tier.” Naomi and Darryl decorated the space with birdcage tea stands for their champagne and cream team. “The scones were all handmade by Darryl, who is a pastry chef,” reveals Naomi. “We chose plain, cherry, fruit and black forest scones with crème Chantilly and homemade jams. The tea and coffee was supplied by Carvetii Coffee.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore an embroidered dress with a navy bodice, pleated chiffon skirt and satin belt from Coast,” says the bride. “I wanted something to keep my arms warm and that I could wear again yet feel special on the day. I’m only 5ft, so the midi length was perfect for me. I accessorised with navy Ruby Shoo shoes with pink satin flowers.” Darryl chose a navy Jeff Banks three-piece suit. “He had a buttonhole that matched my bouquet,” shares Naomi. “Our chief bride and groomsmaid wore a lace overlaid princess-line dress with a laced bodice and puddle train with large navy satin bows down the centre. She accessorised with a faux-fur collared shrug, white lace gloves, butterfly hairclips and sparkly shoes.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt like newlyweds or giggling school children on the day,” explains the bride. “It can be all too easy for couples to forget why they said ‘I do’. We’ve had our fair share of ups and downs, and this moment in time allowed us to put the every day aside, stop and find each other again. To remember what we do for each other, what we love about each other and how we would be lost in the wilderness without what we have together. There were so many wonderful moments, including 33

our daughter’s reading. We stopped in the middle of re-making our commitments to each other and the vicar was wondering if he should repeat the line, but we were just locked into each other’s eyes, drinking in the moment, remembering our wedding day and how much our union has strengthened us both individually and as a team.” Naomi and Darryl were unsure if their day would go ahead due to Covid restrictions. “We’re used to organising things with little notice as our original wedding was planned in just 16 weeks with celebrations in both England and Guernsey,” recalls Naomi. “We wondered, like many couples, if our 10 year celebration would go ahead with all the trials and tribulations of Covid, but we grasped a window of opportunity and took the chance. The pandemic meant we were unable to be joined by family and friends from Guernsey, Europe, and other parts of the UK, so we were joined by our newly-found friends who have helped us ride the storm since arriving in Cumbria – it became a celebration of strength, fortitude and thanksgiving. Our friends pulled out the stops to help us make the day so special – last minute flower crises, a staffing crisis and the traumas of dressing yourself and the children. Michelle from Shelley Cuts And Colours took such care and attention with my hair. We met in Guernsey and were separated as we both moved homes but we found each other again in Cumbria! I have super fine hair, thanks to pregnancy and stress, so she took the time to carefully add the life it needed, perfectly matched and tamed. As the time came around for the service, we feared that the rain would create a wash-out, but the sun smiled kindly on us at the crucial moment, just as it had on our original day. Our daughter read Seamus Heaney’s poem Scaffolding, reminding us that those early years of marriage can be hard work, but it’s the strength of those foundations that will hold us together for life, if only we persevere and work through the challenge to complete that build, we can let the scaffolding fall away knowing we will remain standing tall. This was followed by the words of Psalm 46 chosen by our friends in Guernsey; a reading of strength in times of need, of resilience and fortitude. We finished our celebrations with a flurry of natural confetti featuring lavender and cornflowers in our new planted wildflower meadow. All of this was beautifully documented by de la Mare Creative in photo and film, as chance would have it, another Guernsey ex-pat in Cumbria!”

REAL WEDDINGS

A winter WONDERLAND Hayley and Scott said ‘I do’ surrounded by their friends and family Images courtesy of Weddings By Luke

T

wo decades after first meeting, Hayley and Scott made their way back to each other. “We met more than 20 years ago through friends,” says Hayley. “We felt instantly attracted to one another, but the timing was not right back then. We found each other again in June 2020 through social media and instantly became inseparable. We knew that we were meant to be together.” Scott proposed four months after reuniting. “I knew it was coming as I’d caught him looking at engagement rings, however the actual night was a surprise,” shares the bride. “We went out for a meal in the Lake District, looking back now he seemed a little nervous but excited at the same time. We stopped off at Lake Windermere on the way home as Scott said it would be nice for us to go for a walk; that’s where he got down on one knee with the most beautiful engagement ring and asked if I would marry him.” Hayley and Scott got married in December of the following year, and here we find out more about their big day...

ith so many beautiful flowers available it can be difficult to decide on a colour scheme. To help, we’ve asked local florists to send in their favourite arrangements to give you heaps of inspiration.

“This bouquet was made using romantic pinks and whites with a little fluffy texture.” – Andrea Hudson Thompson from Hudson & Thompson Flowers.

Bouquets

“I adore this bouquet, it’s so elegant, relaxed and stylish. I’ve used as many seasonal flowers as possible such as ranunculus, white sweet peas and foraged rowan flowers. These are then accompanied by David Austin patience and beautiful bridal flow spray roses.” – Jemma Khan from Forage Floristry.

“This bouquet was left up to me apart from the couple’s requested addition of protea. The wedding was on the hottest day of 2021 and the bouquet matched the weather perfectly. Whilst you can’t guarantee the sun will shine on your big day, you can set the tone with your flowers.” – Alison Cooper from The Flower Studio Manchester.

“The combination of light and dark pinks with hints of white and mauve is a lovely colour scheme. This design included a mix of peonies, roses and Lily of the valley, which are some of my favourite spring and summer flowers.” – Laura MacPherson from Laurel Silk Florist.

“As a florist, it’s hard to pick a favourite bridal bouquet – however, time and time again, we come back to this bouquet created using stunning phalaenopsis orchids. We love its simple elegance, defined structure and cascading style.” – Margaret Mason from Margaret Mason Florist. 49

“When it comes to venue styling, we recommend having elevated florals to provide a level of impact and add a wow factor. This couple put so much thought and care into dressing areas that guests would use throughout the day but weren’t necessarily a focal point of the wedding. This gorgeous corridor with its swoon-worthy tiles and mosaic floor connected the main venue with the chill-out zone created in the Turkish baths.” – Alison from The Flower Studio Manchester.

“I’m a big fan of statement pieces and think an arch is a great way to style any venue. This image is from a recent wedding and is very Bridgerton. Filled with hydrangeas, anemones, ranunculus, quicksand roses, Westminster Abbey roses and blue delphinium.” – Jemma from Forage Floristry. 50

“My favourite centrepiece is a flower wreath displayed with candles. This rustic design from a gorgeous barn wedding included large ivory roses, Lily of the valley and hints of blue thistles.” – Laura from Laurel Silk Florist.

“This bouquet doubled up as a feature on the top table. It was costeffective and the plum and peach roses looked beautiful.” – Andrea from Hudson & Thompson Flowers.

“Flower crowns are perfect for young bridesmaids, they are easy to attach and there is no danger of them forgetting or losing them. I particularly love this one and how it complements the older bridesmaids.” – Jemma from Forage Floristry.

“This delicate floral necklace was designed for a bridesmaid who didn’t want to carry a bouquet but still wanted to have some flowers. I used miniature blooms, foliage and even tiny succulents so that it matched the rest of the wedding flowers and the neckline of her dress. Almost anything is possible with flowers with a little imagination and skill.” – Alison from The Flower Studio Manchester.

A group of local suppliers worked together to create two different looks at Ashfield House Images courtesy of The Capture Co.

T

his styled shoot was put together by Emma Curran and Naomi Mills from The Capture Co. Emma tells us: “We had been shooting individually, but after working together on a few weddings last year, we realised our styles are similar, so we decided to join forces and create The Capture Co. To support the launch of our new business, we wanted to wow couples by creating some stunning, fresh content. “We used this opportunity to begin building a network of amazing local suppliers who we would then be able to recommend to new clients and vice versa. It was really important to us that we selected companies who we felt shared our vision, for example, the amazing work done by Jess and Ashley at Stix & Stems, but also, those who may have been new to the industry such as E & E Car Hire. The wedding industry is competitive, so by doing this, it felt as though we were giving something back. “It was an incredible day. It felt like a full-on #girlpower type situation. We shared stories during the downtime about how many of us have full-time jobs and undertake our passion projects as a side hustle or how some of us previously had full-time careers and completely changed direction to live and breathe our passion. In every situation, everyone loves what they do, and that shows in the quality of the vision that was created and captured. We’re proud of how everything came together, and that’s down to the suppliers being able to bring our initial brief to life.”

EXPERT ADVICE

The amount of videographers available can seem a little overwhelming, but the beauty of a lot of choice is that there is a supplier out there to suit everyone – you just need to find them! A good place to start is by nailing down the style of video that you like. Maybe you prefer a fun, relaxed look that captures your day exactly as it happens, or perhaps you want something a little more romantic? Watching wedding videos that catch your eye and noting down aspects that you and your partner do and don’t like will help narrow down your search and lead you to a videographer that ticks all your boxes. Another great place to start is by asking for recommendations from married friends and other suppliers you have already booked. The wedding world is a close network, and if you find people that love working together and complement each other, there can only be a great outcome. Once you’ve found a videographer, I’d always recommend arranging a get to know each other chat. You can ask any burning questions and get a feel for your supplier as a person. Your videographer will be there for most of the day and will want to make a video that you love, so feeling comfortable around them is very important.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA We’re thinking of booking a videographer for our wedding, but we’re feeling overwhelmed by the choice available. How can we narrow it down and find the perfect supplier?

MUSIC TO MY EARS We’d love some live music at our drinks reception, but don’t want anything too intrusive as guests will want to chat and catch up. What would you suggest? Consider booking a string quartet for your big day. An acoustic string quartet will be nonintrusive and provide a comfortable atmosphere for your guests to mingle and converse freely. Here at Harmony String Quartet, we give our couples access to our full catalogue of music ranging from soft classical to light jazz and modern day hits. Look through your supplier’s repertoire and see if their style suits your big day. Charli Daw www.harmonystringquartet.co.uk 57

MEMORABLE MOMENTS How can we ensure our photographer is the right fit for our big day? It’s hard to know who is the right photographer for you, so start by looking through websites and social media pages to see if you love the photos they create and their overall style. Once you have found a photographer you love, then the next thing I would do is look at their reviews. See if they are part of a trade association, have the necessary insurance and how long they have been working as a photographer (this is the biggest thing to check) as knowledge and experience of weddings will help them in any situation that might occur on your special day. Thirdly if you are happy with all that you have seen, arrange to meet with them for a brew to chat through your plans and see if you feel comfortable with them and if they are available to photograph your day. If you feel relaxed around them, then you should feel comfortable spending all day with them. Come away from that meeting and chat about how you feel before booking. Christina Davies www.fish2.co.uk

SUMMER ROMANCE www.davidallbuttphotography.com

My wife-to-be and I are getting married next summer and would like some shots that reflect the season. Do you have any ideas?

BOLD AND PLAYFUL My hubby-to-be and I are trying to think of a theme for our upcoming wedding. What trends are popular at the moment? Last year was all about neutral tones, and although these are still popular, vibrant colours are back bigger than ever! Couples are incorporating vibrant hues into their tables-capes with coloured candles and matching linen. I’ve also noticed brides and grooms are opting for re-usable centrepieces that guests can take home. Olivia and James, the bride and groom whose wedding I styled in this photograph, had a Mediterranean-themed wedding with olive trees as centrepieces. This was a great way to be more sustainable and they created very little waste by gifting the plants to guests at the end of the evening. A wedding theme represents the overall look and feel you want to create on your wedding day. If you decide on your wedding aesthetic first, your theme will naturally follow. This will help you keep your wedding decisions more uniform later down the line. Victoria Rawlins www.instagram.com/blossomandbowseventhire 58

Next year will be the first season for some time where weddings will be fully open. The summer season gives you the opportunity to create some fabulous outdoor portrait shots and natural images indoors. Try and plan with your photographer when to get the very best light. Warm colours of the late afternoon or the cooler shades of the morning can create beautiful images compared to the harsh midday light of the UK. Indoors is ideal for prep-images in the morning, the shade will create contrast, and sunlight shining through will help capture the infamous window shot. Summer creates areas of shadows for romantic portraits with lots of colour and flowers. Think about having a first look in an outdoor scene. It’s not for all couples but it will create a private moment for you both and help get rid of a lot of nerves. If you’re wearing a suit, think about the colour. Does it complement your partner’s outfit and colours you will be surrounded by on the day? Talk to your partner about posing, are you nervous, comfortable or a natural model and secretly love posing? I give couples a guide to think about images they may want to have in their album. To get the very best summer shots talk to your photographer, ask for advice, be natural, and most importantly relax and enjoy your day. David Allbutt www.davidallbuttphotography.com

Fall in love with this styled shoot at Morton Manor Community Centre Images courtesy of Ellie June Photography

T

o find out more about this gorgeous set of images, we spoke to the photographer Ellie Currie from Ellie June Photography. “Our inspiration for the bridal shoot was elegance and tradition with a strong focus on romance and natural beauty. We chose a beautiful local venue steeped in history, with regal staircases, bright open rooms and windows overlooking floral gardens. We wanted to keep the photo shoot simple and focused on close up images to empathise its beauty and simplicity. Our colour palette was kept neutral, with ivory, golds, silvers and pinks to enhance the traditional aspect while adding a soft feminine feel which we all loved. “The models all had very different looks which allowed us to showcase our talents in different ways. A strong 1920s feel was created through sleek hair designs, vintage-inspired make-up and accessories.”

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

64

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 65

How to look your big-day best

W

ith trends constantly changing and the added pressure of looking your best, we understand how overwhelming the wedding planning process can be. To help make things a bit easier, we’ve rounded up some top tips from local suppliers.

The latest dress trends

“Here at The Bridal Barn Boutique Limited, we are seeing brides-to-be choose dresses that are sleek and modern. Nearlyweds are focusing less on lace and more on clean lines and luxe fabrics such as Mikado satin or cloqué. "We predict the next big trend will be square necklines thanks to the beautiful costumes seen on Bridgerton and most recently Nicola Peltz’s wedding dress. There’s also been an increase in brides-to-be wearing pearls on everything from belts to veils and headdresses!” – Emma McGee from The Bridal Berkeley by Freda Bennet Barn Boutique Limited, www.thebridalbarnboutique.co.uk

Finding the perfect gown

Milan by Freda Bennet

❤ Go against tradition with a coloured wedding dress or add a pastel tulle skirt over the top. This can then be removed later in the evening to create a completely different style. ❤ If you want a bespoke creation, take into consideration the time scale and money involved. Most bridal boutiques suggest you visit up to a year before your wedding, but if you’re after a tailored creation, it may be worth booking an appointment as soon as possible to ensure you get exactly what you’re looking for. ❤ At the start of your appointment, your consultant will ask about your ideas and plans for the big day. Be descriptive as this will help paint a picture of how you envisage your special day and don’t be afraid to ask questions. ❤ Dress to your tastes for the appointment. This will help the consultant recognise your style. ❤ It’s important you feel comfortable both physically and mentally on your big day. Think carefully about what shoes you’ll be wearing and remember you can still look on-trend in flats. ❤ The evening reception is the perfect time to relax and unwind, so if you’re worried about tripping on your veil, why not purchase two? Look for a shorter version that will transform your look. ❤ Separates are becoming really popular. It’s a great way of mixing and matching styles and is oh-so comfy. ❤ If you’re eco-conscious and want to cut back on your carbon footprint, shop locally. This means your dress won’t have travelled far, and it supports local companies. 87

www.sixstories.co.uk www.emilyrobinsonphotography.co.uk

❤ Consider the neckline of your dress before purchasing your necklace. For example, if you have a gown with a high neck, then you

want to avoid a dramatic necklace that will overpower the look. ❤ There are lots of fun, personalised items out there that make great gifts for the bridal party. From glasses and slippers to robes, it’s sure to leave your party feeling wonderful and put in everyone in a great mood. ❤ Pearls are the latest jewellery trend and they can be incorporated through your earrings, necklace, bracelet, hair piece, veil and even your bag. www.emilyrobinsonphotography.co.uk

It’s important that you look fabulous on your big day and jewellery and accessories can play a key part in helping you achieve your overall bridal look. Choosing pieces that complement your dress without upstaging it can be tricky, to help we’ve put together some top tips.

“Change your wedding day look into an evening look with a cocktail ring. Pastels were all over the 2022 catwalks, and brides are not shying away from colour this year.” – Rachel Elizabeth Wood, www.rachelelizabethwood.com

“After your special day is over, your wedding ring will adorn your finger for the rest of your life, so why not design and make something bespoke?” – Rachel Elizabeth Wood, www.rachelelizabethwood.com www.emilyrobinsonphotography.co.uk

“Wedding ring jackets are becoming more popular. The jacket fits around your engagement ring to create a beautiful set.” – Rachel Elizabeth Wood, www.rachelelizabethwood.com

“One of the most popular requests we receive is to repurpose existing precious stones and precious metals that are of high sentimental value. It’s a lovely idea and carries so much meaning to walk down the aisle on your special day with existing stones incorporated into your wedding band or a new item.” – Rachel Elizabeth Wood, www.rachelelizabethwood.com 88

“Organic jewellery is a growing trend. Pretty and romantic, these pieces are something you will want to keep wearing beyond your wedding day.” – Rachel Elizabeth Wood, www.rachelelizabethwood.com

LOOKING YOUR FLOWERS BEST

Hair care hero

It can be stressful trying to decide on a hairstyle, especially since there are so many beautiful options out there. To help we’ve come up with a list of hairstyles to match your dress’ neckline.

V-neck

The focus of a V-neck dress is on the shape the neckline creates, so avoid detracting from that with any dramatic jewellery. If you have naturally curly hair, why not embrace that? Alternatively, a braided up do or sleek low ponytail are popular trends for 2022.

Sweetheart

A sweetheart neckline can be styled in a variety of ways. Since there isn’t much detail around your shoulders, you could opt for the oh-so-popular Hollywood waves, which look particularly good with a boho or beach wedding. Alternatively, a half up and half down look or low bun is becoming more popular.

Suit

If you’ve decided against a traditional wedding dress and are opting for a suit or two-piece, there are several ways you can style your hair. Soft, flowing waves with a flower crown or a sleek ponytail accessorised with a pop of colour is sure to grab your guests’ attention. Alternatively, if you have short hair, add volume and curls.

Low back

Off-theshoulder

It’s important to highlight your beautiful shoulders in an off-the-shoulder gown, so why not look for a low bun or soft romantic waves?

High neck

Dresses with low backs are becoming more popular in 2022. This gorgeous look can be styled in a variety of ways but we’re seeing more up dos, dramatic waves and sleek ponytails.

If your dress has a high or halter neckline, avoid having your hair down as it may detract from the gown’s beauty. Instead, look at low ponytails or soft up dos.

High back

Short hair can be left up or down with a high back dress without detracting from its design. If you have long locks, try an up do so you can still see the back of the gown. 89

Q&A Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best TAKE A DEEP BREATH

www.kerrywoodsphotography.com

How can I relax in the run-up to my wedding? Relaxing should be an essential part of wedding planning amidst all the organising and chaos. Remember to stay calm, after all, does it matter if some finer details are left out at the last moment? Take a moment to yourself to you reflect, work out what’s important, recharge and recalibrate. At the spa, we provide brides and grooms with a space to escape and unwind. For me, enjoying facials, massages, and other treatments is the ultimate way to relax. Booking regular treatments will allow you to enjoy some time out together as a couple or with family and friends ahead of the big day. If you get regular facials, you will be guaranteed beautiful, glowing skin ready for your make-up artist to work with. Don’t forget to ask your therapist for products to take home and skincare advice to help create the ultimate pre-wedding glow. Jenna Baines www.loftbeauty.co.uk

HERE COME THE CURLS

As someone with naturally curly hair, I feel your pain. Prep is always the key for me. Firstly, I would invest in a high-quality shampoo and conditioner to use on a regular basis. I am loving the brand Nine Yards as they are vegan and organic and don’t leave any nasty chemicals. I am also a big fan of Olaplex No.7, this acts as heat protection and will leave you with a silky finish. Around one month before the wedding, I would have the KeraStraight Ultimate Treatment. This is a non-chemical treatment which will help to tame frizz, improve the hair’s condition, make it more manageable and help styles last longer. On the big day, shampoo and condition your locks with your lovely new products, then ask your stylist to blow dry it to banish any frizz and close that cuticle fully. Any sign of moisture or dampness and the frizz will return so having 100 per cent dry hair is important. The products I would use include: ❤ A heat protection. ❤ An anti-frizz product. ❤ Some kind of cream/mouse to hold the style. I am also a fan of setting hair which allows it to cool and hold the style for longer. Extensions are a great idea, and I describe them to brides as their insurance since they do not frizz and hold a curl very well. Sam Gateley www.samgateley.co.uk 90

ANTARCTICA AND RWANDA

Wilderness Safaris and White Desert have come together to design an adventure-packed itinerary featuring the best of Africa and Antarctica. Set to take place in January 2023, the companies’ shared guests will enjoy the most awe-inspiring experiences, hand-crafted to highlight the best of Wilderness Safaris and White Desert’s offerings. Ice & Fire is a 20-day journey where couples will discover the highlights of Cape Town, Antarctica, and Rwanda. During their stay, tourists will have exclusive access to observe over 14 000 breeding pairs of penguins and their weeks-old chicks. Additionally, guests will embark on an overnight excursion by plane to the South Pole, which is visited by fewer than 800 people each year. Other activities include trekking through ice waves, exploring crystal caves, biking, and cross country skiing, while accompanied by highly qualified and knowledgeable White Desert guides. Couples will then head to Cape Town for three nights to regroup and relax. Observe the highly entertaining golden monkey population in the park, plant trees to help reforestation and connect with the local community. SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to

the forest

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

E

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

HONEYMOONS

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
