New beginnings W

elcome to the first issue of 2022. It dawned on me over the festive period that in just a few months time I will become Mrs Cullen – eek! I can’t believe how quickly time passes, we’ve been engaged for more than a year now, and it’s just flown by. I’m very organised, much to my fiancé’s dismay, but the closer we get to the day, the more I feel like I’m forgetting something. We’ve booked all of our suppliers, organised all the outfits, so it’s just the small things left to do, but the nerves are starting to set in. My wonderful bridesmaids have been helping keep me calm, but the idea of walking down the aisle without falling over is giving me nightmares. Talking to some of our readers, I know that many of you felt the same in the run-up to your big day, so it’s nice knowing that I’m not alone. If you have any tips for controlling nerves on the day, please feel free to get in touch as any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Whether you’re newly engaged or a long-term reader, I hope you enjoy this issue and find lots of inspiration. We have images from local florists, ideas for dressing the bridal party, fabulous real weddings, styled shoots and an impressive fashion section. If you’ve recently celebrated your day, been involved with a styled shoot or want to share some tips from your planning journey, email melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com or you can submit your wedding via our website at www.yoursouthwales.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding Happy planning.

Jarvis & Co. Jewellery has recently rebranded. The company creates precious fine jewellery using natural objects such as twigs and leaves. The creative director, Bethan Jarvis, tells us more: “I have been a jeweller for 14 years and during the lockdown, I completed an MA Professional Art Practitioner (Jewellery) where I received a distinction. I was also selected to participate in the Goldsmith’s Getting Started Online Course, which took me on the journey to re-brand as a fine jewellery company. “I make wedding jewellery that includes alternative engagement and wedding rings, based on people’s favourite tree, the ring is made from a twig collected by the couple from their favourite location that is then cast in silver and gold and set with sapphires and diamonds. We are also able to make wedding bands from the tree bark and bridesmaids jewellery to match, using either small leaves collected from the wedding venue or using the couple’s favourite leaf.” Head over to www.jarvisandcojewellery.com for more information.

REAL WEDDINGS

Zoë and Jed celebrated their love with a gorgeous wedding at Tall John’s House Images courtesy of Sophie Renshaw Photography

Z

oë and Jed started talking to each other in October 2013 on Facebook. “We spoke for two months before we agreed to meet up,” says Zoë. “Jed didn’t have his driving license at the time, so I said I would pick him up from the train station. I arrived at the station, and Jed was nowhere to be seen! Turns out he’d got on the train and travelled 15 minutes closer to my home town. We both maintain we went to the correct place. Our first date was very standard, Frankie & Benny’s then to the cinema. The rest is, as they say, history.” “The proposal was like something from one of my favourite rom-coms,” shares the bride. “We went to New York to celebrate our 5th anniversary and to see the Christmas decorations. We decided to get up early and have a walk in Central Park at sunrise. I truly had no idea what was coming at the time, but now it seems obvious! You see Jed is quite shy and doesn’t like to attract too much attention, so the idea of a proposal in New York City was impossible, or so I thought. However, on the morning of our anniversary, when we were on our walk, Jed got down on one knee. I instantly started to cry, and a dog came running up to us. It was perfect! There was nobody around, and it felt like the city belonged to us. The rest of the day was amazing. I was in charge of planning our anniversary lunch, so we went to a rooftop bar overlooking the Empire State Building, and Jed planned our anniversary dinner, a river cruise out to see the Statue of Liberty. My engagement ring also has a pretty special story behind it. In 2016 we went to Devon for the weekend, and whilst looking around, we saw a jewellery shop that sold a raw diamond ring, and I said I liked it. A few hours later, and the cookies on our phones showed us a company called Point No Point Studio, and I fell in love. That’s where Jed bought my ring nine months before he planned to propose, so it lived under our spare bed for ages, and I was clueless!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

33

We chose Tall John’s House as we loved the relaxed atmosphere and the owners are truly the best people.

I’ve always loved the colour green, and it’s Jed’s favourite colour too, so we chose it for our colour scheme. When I went for a floral consultation at Hilary’s Floral Design in Abergavenny, we discussed what pieces I could use at different times of the day, and that’s when we came up with the idea of a floral arch. We used it as décor for our ceremony and then at the reception as a selfie backdrop. To add to an already emotional time, we decided to use the flowers from the arch the next day to take to the cemetery. It was a beautiful way to include those who couldn’t be there in person.

I’m a keen baker and had always imagined baking my own wedding cake, however, as the day came closer, I decided to outsource and leave it to a professional. I found Anna from The Cake Cwtch on Instagram. I’d already planned the design as an extra tall two-tiered cake with flowers from the bouquets in the centre and Anna didn’t disappoint! As a big Friends fan, we chose a topper that said: ‘He’s her lobster’. I had written it on my first Valentine’s Day card to Jed, and it’s something we’ve said ever since.

We had jars with wooden hearts and lace ribbons for our centrepieces. My auntie arranged stems into them that matched our bouquets that were dotted around all the tables. I tried to keep the centrepieces very simple but effective, especially as we were outside, as I didn’t want things to get knocked over and broken. 34

For our favours, we gave our guests Millions sweets as we say every day ‘love you millions’ so it just seemed right.

We always knew we wanted a sweetheart table as opposed to the traditional top table, but with the COVID-19 restrictions, we were only allowed six people per table, which actually worked out fine in the end.

REAL WEDDINGS

Pretty much all of our guests were, like us, hugely into their food. So trying to settle on a wedding breakfast that would suit the relaxed feel we wanted for the day and, most importantly, be delicious was very hard! We finally decided on a barbecue, and the team at Mad Hatters Catering Limited did not disappoint. Even now, people are still talking about it. It was hands down the best barbecue we’ve ever had. We also had pizza in the evening, and once again, the catering team surprised us, the pizzas were made fresh, and they offered so many varieties.

I originally wanted a simple dress, but I ended up with an A-line satin design with a detailed lace and beaded bodice from Timeless Elegance Bridal. The wonderful in-house seamstresses created a back for me as the gown was originally backless. They did such a good job, and you would never know it was added on. I had the best shopping experience, everyone was so helpful, and I appreciated their opinions. I accessorised with earrings from Pandora that Jed bought me for Christmas a few years ago, a stunning veil and shoes from Dune.

The bridesmaids opted for sage green dresses. I hated the idea of wearing something you don’t feel comfortable in, so the girls picked their own gowns, which came from far and wide and, surprisingly enough, the colours matched well.

My nanny crocheted 100 tiny flowers to use as bunting along the barn, they were so delicate and precious to us, and we will treasure them forever. We also hired fairylights and had them draped from the beams of the barn.

We had a fantastic live band called Vermillion booked through Entertainment Nation Ltd. They were such lovely and genuine guys. They learnt a song as a surprise for my stepdad as he was the person who organised the music.

Jed chose a green tweed three-piece suit from Hawkes Bespoke Outfitters. It was tailored beautifully, and the sage green paisley ties and pocket squares I found for him and his best men from Etsy suited it perfectly. Jed wanted his best men to feel comfortable, so they both wore their own suits. 35

I’m proud to say that we were both very calm on the morning of the wedding and utterly overjoyed. Sitting at our sweetheart table looking at all our guests was lovely.

Jed found us a cruise in Central America for two weeks in December 2021. We hope it actually happens, but we feel so grateful to have had the wedding. The only restrictions that affected us were the guest number limitations, everything else suited us well, even the no dancing rule, as we certainly aren’t floor fillers.

In a mishap to avoid standing on the skirt of my dress, I flicked my shoe off, and my toenail went along with it! A quick bandage from my bridesmaid, who is a nurse and a few tequilas later, and I was none the wiser. However, I did have to go to minor injuries the next day to get it sorted, yet another reason to be forever grateful to the NHS.

All of our suppliers went above and beyond! A special thank you has to go to the team at Tall John’s House who were incredible, and we cannot thank them enough.

REAL WEDDINGS

R

hian and Rory met on Tinder in 2014. “Rory was attracted to my smile, and I thought he looked cheeky and loved his curly hair,” says Rhian. “We spoke via WhatsApp for a few weeks and eventually went on our first date. We knew from that first meet up that we had something special.” Rory proposed during a holiday to Venice. “It was the day before my 27th birthday, and it was a complete surprise,” shares the bride. “I’m in charge of packing when we go on holiday, so I was shocked he had managed to keep the ring from me. He had asked my dad’s permission before the trip, so my parents knew it was going to happen, however, they started to get a bit worried when days had passed, and there was no news. Rory wanted to find the perfect moment. He tried on a gondola but got told off for moving seats and making the weight uneven! He eventually found a lovely quiet spot on a bridge with no people around and asked me to be his wife.”

SETTING THE SCENE “Aberdyfi is my hometown and favourite place in the world,” explains Rhian. “I left for university in 2010 but go back to visit. Aberdyfi is also special to Rory’s family as his nanny had visited since she was a little girl. Funnily enough, she knew my dad before Rory and I had even met! I grew up going to St Peter’s Church and knew I wanted to get married there one day. We have large families, and there aren’t many places nearby to host a reception, so we decided to book Neuadd Dyfi. We’ve hosted many family events there, and it’s a great space that can be transformed into a stunning venue. As Aberdyfi is a seaside village, it was an easy decision to go for a seaside theme.” For their favours, the couple gave their guests handmade paper boats with flags that doubled up as place names. “I acquired a little wooden surfboard and contacted Charlee Bee Creates and asked them to decorate it,” reveals the bride. “They painted it white and drew seaside illustrations on it. It now lives on our staircase.” For their centrepieces, Rhian’s dad sourced local driftwood, and her mum made table numbers. “I found decorations online, and my aunty Lynn arranged these for us the day before,” recalls Rhian. “The flowers were created by a local florist who we gave free rein. She has known me since I was a little girl, so I knew it would be stunning. She produced all the bouquets, buttonholes and centrepieces.” “Our cake was made by Dee Dee’s,” adds the bride. “We knew we didn’t want a traditional design, so we asked her to make ice cream cupcakes that looked like Mr Whippy’s. They had white cream and a fake stick in the top.” To decorate the rest of the space, Rhian’s aunty made seaside-themed bunting. “We also used Entertainment 12 for the freestanding balloons and arch,” says Rhian. “We put packets of sweets in little buckets, chocolates in a picnic hamper and cards from guests in baskets.” “My parents hired two Bentleys from Ceir y Cardi,” shares the bride. “It was our wedding present and was a lovely surprise.” Caviar & Chips provided the catering. “They were incredible,” explains Rhian. “They did the food and drink for the whole day. We had cones of fish and chips as canapés and Indian food for the wedding breakfast. We had samosas and bhajis and poppadoms to start and then a choice of three curries and rice and naan for the mains. Brave choice for a white dress, but it was delicious! For the dessert, Aberdyfi Ice Cream Company served homemade ice cream either in a cone or a tub. I worked there from the age of 12 to 21 in the holidays. They make all of their ice cream, and it’s the best! In the evening, Caviar & Chips provided a delicious barbecue.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a dress by June Peony Bridal Couture,” reveals the bride. “I live in Solihull, so I went to dress shops in Birmingham. June Peony Bridal Couture was the second store we went to, and there was no need to go anywhere else! We were blown away by the stunning dresses and the service we received there. The staff were so knowledgeable, and they listened to everything I liked about each one and suggested other designs based on my likes and dislikes. I decided to go all out

and wear a once in a lifetime dress! Just when I thought I was wearing the one, the staff pulled out one more. My mum and I didn’t think it would be possible, but the staff were right, and that dress was perfect. I adored all the different layers, it was off white, and it sparkled beautifully. I wanted to look like a princess, so I tried on a long veil and tiara and was sold.” Rory chose a Marc Darcy suit. “He’s an engineer, so I’m used to seeing him in work trousers but he looked amazing,” recalls Rhian. “Rory opted for a three-piece option while his best man wore a two-piece version.” The bridesmaids chose baby blue long dresses with lace detailing from Ever Pretty.

REAL WEDDINGS

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had a five-piece band called The Heights booked through Tailored Entertainment,” adds the bride. “They played two-hour sets and even learnt our first dance song. Their repertoire was great, and the dancefloor was always packed. They really interacted with the crowd, and everyone commented on how fantastic they were. They organised for guests to play a drinking game that I used to play at university, which was great fun.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I think the photos show that we didn’t stop laughing or smiling all day,” says Rhian. “The standout moment overall was having the wedding go ahead just the way we wanted with all of our friends and family in attendance without any major restrictions. It was well worth the wait!” The couple’s big day was made perfect by their friends and family. “My dad did a reading about Aberdyfi that was written by Rory’s nan, which was very special,” shares the bride. “Having my 93-year-old nana there and seeing her smiling so much was also amazing to see. Our loved ones were so helpful in decorating the venue the day before and taking it all down the day after. Des George, who manages Neuadd Dyfi, was so wonderful. I tried to use local suppliers in Aberdyfi and the surrounding areas as much as I could. The feedback from our guests regarding Caviar & Chips and The Heights was great and highly deserved! We also had our guests film our day using the services of Edit Your Wedding, which was a lot of fun.” “We didn’t know what to expect from the best man’s speech,” explains Rhian. “Rory was nervous as all grooms are, I expect. His speech was the closest I came to crying. He said such lovely and kind words. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. It really was spectacular and we wish we could do it all over again!” 41

atherine and Matthew met at The Celtic Manor Resort. “I was a waitress there, and Matt was a trainee manager,” explains Catherine. “I was attracted to his smile, and he loved my eyes. We hit it off, and the rest is history.” Matthew proposed to Catherine where they first met. “He first laid eyes on me in the lobby, so he decided to get down on one knee in the same spot with our family watching,” shares the bride. “It was a huge surprise and we couldn’t have been happier.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 45

As pretty as a flower FLOWERS

Beautiful blooms from real weddings

“I’ve always loved the colour green, and it’s Jed’s favourite colour too, so we chose it for our colour scheme. When I went for a floral consultation at Hilary’s Floral Design (www.hilarysflowers.co.uk) in Abergavenny, we discussed what pieces I could use at different times on the day, and that’s when we came up with the idea of a floral arch. We used it as décor for our ceremony and then at the reception as a selfie backdrop. To add to an already emotional time, we decided to use the flowers from the arch the next day to take to the cemetery. It was a beautiful way to include those who couldn’t be there in person.” – Zoë and Jed got married at Tall John’s House (www.talljohnshouse.com)

“We booked our wedding during the pandemic to keep it small and intimate. EXPERT ADVICE

TOPIC Wedding worries Our experts solve your problems

VINTAGE GLAMOUR We’re having a vintage-inspired wedding, and I’d love to incorporate the theme into my hair and make-up. Do you have any suggestions? A vintage-themed wedding can be anything from the glamour of the 1920s to the rock and roll energy of the 50s. A couple that chooses a particular decade usually lives a somewhat vintage lifestyle and equates that in their style. Create an inspiration board to help group your ideas. Pick the hairstyle you like the most and ask your stylist to work with you to re-create it, taking into consideration your face shape, hair thickness and texture. Your make-up should enhance your chosen style, think of smoky eyes, red lips, liners and lashes mixed with a modern-day twist. Hollywood waves or a marcel wave created with modern techniques, dressed with a Great Gatsby-inspired headpiece would look stunning. Most hair and make-up artists have done theatrical work and have trained to create looks throughout the ages so ask to see their previous work to get an idea of their capabilities. TREND SETTER What styling trends do you think will be popular in 2022?

www.richandmaria.co

The popular décor and themes for 2022 promise to be bolder than ever, and what links them is nostalgia. I don’t think it’s any coincidence given the last 18 months that people are looking to the past rather than the present for inspiration. Among the trends I expect to see are: Period features – With costume dramas in high concentration we expect to see trends develop around this theme. Pretty pastels, timepieces such as gramophones and brandy bars are more popular than ever and add a nice touch to any event. Disco details – The focus on all things glitter, neon, and retro have not disappeared, and I think it’s a trend that will continue to grow throughout 2022. With many companies now offering reasonably priced bespoke neon signs, the world is your oyster. Seeking nature – We are seeing increasing numbers of people wanting to bring the outside in. Whether you hire real plants in volume or silk alternatives, it can be done sympathetically and will dramatically alter marquees and indoor spaces. Unusual table configurations – This trend has been developing for some time. Whether it’s a mixture of square, rectangular and long tables or something completely different like our S Table. It’s nice to mix and match and makes planning even more fun. There is also a move away from classic materials, and our hairpin leg tables are a welcome change from the standard trestle versions. CUTTING THE COSTS I want lovely photographs, but am limited by our budget. Do you have any suggestions on how we can save money?

www.claireroigephotography.co.uk

Start by getting your FBI cap on and doing some research into what style of photography you like and what approach you want your photographer to have. You’re going to be with this person, up close and personal, for a very long and emotional day, so you need to have faith in them and feel comfortable around them to get the most out of your wedding photos. Here are a few ideas to help try and save those pennies: ❤ Make a list of the events you most want to be photographed on the day. Can you squeeze all of those into three or four hours? If so, ask your photographer if they offer smaller wedding packages with just a few hours of coverage – most of us do. ❤ Ask about payment plans. These are becoming increasingly popular as an affordable, convenient way of paying, particularly if you’re booking one to two years in advance. ❤ If you own a business, you could offer a service that your photographer may benefit from in exchange or as partial payment for their work. Maybe a car service or web design, anything really. As long as it’s proposed respectfully, there is no harm in asking.

What questions should we ask our DJ before booking? Can we choose the music you play? If you’ve been to a wedding where the music played was awful, this might be because the DJ was not reading the room or had a limited collection. Alternatively, it might mean they were tailoring the music to that specific couple, and they had different tastes to you. Most experienced DJs will be happy to take some requests before the wedding, it’s your day after all. The age of Spotify playlists can mean that clients can have very set ideas of what they want to hear. Keep in mind that what sounds good in the car might not be a great hit on the dancefloor. Part of making a good party is ensuring that as many people as possible feel included. Can we see pictures of the setup? Your DJ should be able to do this, however, there are many different styles available. Some suppliers will give you a choice, and others may only have one option. Some companies will send a sub-contracted DJ along so it may not be possible to see what will be provided. If you’re booking your wedding two years in advance, then they may upgrade or change their style in that time. Keep in touch to confirm what the situation is and ask for an update. Can we see reviews from past clients? It’s important to see what other people’s experiences have been. If the DJ hasn’t done a wedding before, then you would be wise to find out what they intend to do to prepare. Is there a mentor they can work with? If there are no online reviews, can they give you the phone number of a past client to talk to? The safest choice is to choose someone with experience and good reviews. Do you have Public Liability Insurance, and is your equipment PAT tested? Many venues will insist that these documents are presented by the entertainment

60

Claire Roige | Photographer www.claireroigephotography.co.uk to be permitted on the premises. Some will also request a risk assessment. What other services do you offer? Most mobile DJs will offer an all-day service which will save you separate costs of live musicians, PA hire, master of ceremonies and more. Some will also provide light-up letters, monogram lights, selfie wizards, photo booths and dancefloors. It can be much easier to deal with one person or company than five different ones. Can we meet you? It’s important to have a good connection and communication with your DJ. If you would like to meet at the venue, many suppliers will oblige. If this is not practical, then an online meeting would be a good idea. If your DJ doesn’t want to do this, then it might be worth asking why. June Gould (DJ June Cecilia) | DJ www.sgdjweddings.com

BOOGIE TO THE MUSIC

❤ You could look for a photographer who is new to the world of weddings and is building their portfolio. However, if you do this, make sure that they are insured, confident and experienced with their camera and have backup equipment. This can be a riskier option, but if you ask the right questions, it could be a great win-win for you and your novice photographer.

Let me eat cake!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

A

s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.

JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier

design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

68

Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are

entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Melissa. x

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.

To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!

Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.

I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.

Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.

I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.

My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.

Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.

The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 69

The latest trends for your wedding party

Y

ou may have found the dress of your dreams and accessorised like a pro, but don’t forget you’re not the only one who wants to look their best for your nuptials. We’ve asked local experts for their 2022 trend predictions to get the whole wedding party turning heads.

M U M ’S T H E W O R D

She’s been waiting for this just as long as you, so she deserves to look and feel fabulous too! Coryn Emma, the co-founder and director of Baroque Boutique, a mother-of-the-bride/groom boutique in Monmouthshire, tells us the latest trends for mums. “A trend refers to what is popular for a certain period of time, and although weddings are timeless and unique occasions, there is nothing wrong with a little inspiration to help you create the perfect outfit! So what has 2022 got in store? The short answer is a lot! We’re noticing a variety of trends, including up-cycling, revamping, minimal, multi-sensory, classical, quirky, sustainable and earthy and bold with bright pops of colour. It’s definitely an interesting time to run a wedding boutique, and we’re ready to embrace it all. “The new collection from John Charles is timeless and elegant whilst being understated, with classic silhouettes available in enriched shades of platinum and silver. A perfect choice for a church wedding! IR8624 by Irresistible

IRIS 880 by Irresistible

“If you’re adopting a more back-garden escape, Linea Raffaelli and Marella offer gorgeous flowing silhouettes with mid-length hemlines in draping fabrics. “For a classic but bold option, look no further than Irresistible. These silk cut dresses embrace the feminine silhouette in full colour. “Quirky is the word that springs to mind when forecasting next year’s nuptials. Brides and grooms want to bring something new to the table to get their guests talking! Why not do this with the bold prints on offer from Primrose Park London? We promise you will not be disappointed or go unnoticed in these striking hues.” 01873 858 030 www.baroqueboutique.co.uk enquiries@baroqueboutique.co.uk 27026 by John Charles

THE GROOMSMEN Your groom-to-be will want to share his special day with those closest to him, so it’s important that they feel amazing too. Tony Collins, the managing director of Formal Hire, a quality suit hire service in Swansea, tells us the latest trends for the groomsmen. “This year is all about postponed weddings taking place. While trends move a little each season, 2022 will be a mixed bag of many couples who chose their suits in 2019 but weren’t able to get married until now. “This season, greys and tails, without the traditional top hats, will be very popular. The days of heavy long tailcoats that weigh you down are gone, and tailored lightweight versions that are cut to impress rather than hide lumps and bumps are in style. “We are encouraging all our customers not to leave booking their outfits too late as availability will be limited the closer the wedding gets, especially as traditional retailers are struggling to replenish stocks due to supply chain issues from overseas. We have bookings as far ahead as 2025 along with postponements too. Grooms will need to be as organised as the brides in the next few seasons!” 01792 474 685 www.formal-hire.com enquiries@formal-hire.com

We’ve rounded up the latest trends and our top tips for the bridesmaids and mother-of-the-brides/grooms. ❤ Mix and match dresses are incredibly popular at the moment, so don’t feel tied to just one style. If your maids love different designs or colours, this can still look amazing. Try to keep the colours in the same palette, such as pastels or bright hues. ❤ Cap sleeves provide just enough coverage for ladies who are more self-conscious without drawing too much attention. ❤ Tiered skirts are ideal for women who aren’t comfortable in a tight-fitting dress but want something that will stand out. ❤ Don’t be afraid to go against tradition and opt for a two-piece combination. ❤ Jumpsuits are a fun alternative for those who don’t want to wear a dress but still want to look elegant.

❤ Sage green and blush pink, light blue and white and ivory and gold are just a few of the colours we expect to be popular. ❤ Multiway designs are great if your bridesmaids want to wear the same dress in different ways. They can easily be altered and suit a wide variety of body shapes. ❤ Floral prints are perfect for outdoor weddings. ❤ Lace looks elegant and timeless. ❤ Neutral colours look stunning on all skin tones and fit well with any theme. ❤ Keep in mind the time of year you’re getting married and avoid wearing thick suits or dresses for summer weddings and thin materials at winter nuptials. BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). Check out www.qandaskin.com

MAKING WAVES

BRUSH UP

Make-up brushes are notoriously difficult to recycle, which is why Otis Batterbee has launched One Brush Two Lives. The time to take care of our planet is well overdue, so when your Otis Batterbee brushes are worn and in need of replacement, simply send them back to the brand’s HQ where every element will be recycled. The brand has recently launched some new luxurious make-up brush collections, which are a great place to get you started. EDITOR LOVES

We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

UPLIFTED

Until recently the best-kept secret in Paris, Odile is an exclusive skincare line carefully curated to provide maximum results with minimum effort. Sounds good to me! OR, j’etincelle caught my eye. A lightweight gel it contains a wealth of potent activators to revive tired and puffy eyes, while improving the appearance of fine lines and over time this delicate area should appear brighter. To use as a pre-wedding pamper treatment as an under-eye mask apply as a thick layer and leave for 15 minutes before wiping away to reveal instantly brightened and lifted results. It’s suitable for daily use too though – simply pat a small amount around the eye area morning and night. Find it at https://odile.co.uk, priced at £45. 91

Q&A Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

STANDING TALL I’m 5ft tall, and my hubby-to-be is over 6ft! What dress style and embellishments will help give me the illusion of height? Before we talk about dresses, let’s discuss shoes! A high heel will not only give you extra inches but will also make you stand up straighter and give you great posture. Remember to choose your shoes wisely as you’re going to be in them all day, so you need to feel comfortable. Here are some things you should look for when choosing your dress: ❤ Dresses with a plunge or deep V-neckline will help elongate your torso and draw the eye down to your waist, which will help give the illusion of height. ❤ Vertical patterns are really important. Now I’m not saying get a gown with vertical stripes all over it but look for designs that have lace or embellishments that run vertically down the dress. The detailing doesn’t have to cover the entire thing, but any patterns that go from the shoulder to past the hips will help elongate your figure. You don’t need to avoid horizontals altogether, as a dainty belt or detailing around the waist can look amazing. ❤ Alterations are important, so don’t skip these! The fastest way to make you look shorter is to not get the length altered. All the excess fabric at the bottom will swap you, and all the hard work you put into finding your dream gown will be wasted. Make sure it sits just above the floor and covers your shoes. TREND SETTER What mother-of-the-bride/groom outfits will be popular in 2022? We are noticing a wide variety of trends, including up-cycling, revamping, minimal, sustainable, classical, quirky and pops of colour. The new collection from John Charles is timeless and understated, whereas the Linea Raffaelli and Marella silhouettes are ideal for a more relaxed celebration. Quirky is a word that springs to mind when forecasting next year’s nuptials. Brides and grooms will want to create something that will get their guests talking, so why not look for bold prints from Primrose Park London? Your mum will definitely be noticed in these bold hues.
