It ’s party time! H

ere at Your South Wales Wedding, we’re celebrating our 80th issue! It seems like just yesterday that I picked up the magazine for the first time, but here we are nearly five years later. Our first issue launched in 2008, and since then, we’ve featured some amazing weddings, fabulous styled shoots, and seen the community go above and beyond for its couples, especially in the last year. We cannot thank all of you enough for your support as, after all, we wouldn’t be here without you! To celebrate, we’ve put together a showstopping issue that’s full of inspiration. We have three real weddings, five styled shoots, the latest images from local photographers and a must-see micro-weddings guide. What’s more, our fashion section is full of fabulous boho and Hollywoodinspired dresses. We love seeing your real weddings and styled shoots, so if you’d like to be featured, get in touch via our website – www.yoursouthwales.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or email me at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

Bryngarw House, an exclusive-use wedding venue, has unveiled plans to transform its overnight guest accommodation. The property, located in the heart of 100 acres of award-winning parkland, typically welcomes 6,000 wedding guests each year. Cardiff-based designers Momentum have been appointed to design the interior spaces, which will be inspired by the changing colours of Bryngarw Country Park, and sympathetic to the building’s architecture and strong Welsh heritage. Rich colours, textures, patterns, prints and accessories, together with a mix of materials including natural wood, wool, slate, exposed stone and antique metals, will be used to create a luxurious setting for guests to relax and enjoy. The chief executive of Awen Trading Limited, Richard Hughes, tells us: “Our vision is to develop Bryngarw House, a venue with an impressive history, as a luxury Welsh brand and high-end destination for the wedding market, whilst diversifying the business for conferences, weekend retreats and special occasion events. This, in turn, will boost the venue’s impact within the local community and create new and sustainable employment opportunities within the hospitality and tourism industries which have been among the worst affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. Through our refurbishment plans, we will celebrate the beautiful surroundings, promote the language, culture, and offer the very best from local suppliers.” To find out more, visit www.bryngarwhouse.com

JUST FOR YOU

Anne Morgan Jewellery was set up by Anne after she gained a BA (Hons) in designed metalwork and jewellery. In 2015, Anne was able to make her dream of opening a permanent gallery display, championing and showcasing the best of contemporary jewellery in the UK, a reality. Anne Morgan Jewellery is a haven for jewellery lovers who appreciate fine detail, handmade expertise and impressive craftsmanship. “We have just launched our Rachel Range,” shares Anne. “It was inspired by Rachel Burgess from Rachel Burgess Bridal Boutique who invited her guests to an anniversary party that ended up being a wedding – much to the surprise of her friends and family. We were so honoured to make and design this ring for her, and with her permission, we’ve developed a sweet range inspired by nature and branches.” Visit www.annemorganjewellery.com for more information.

DRINK IT ALL IN

Devil’s Bridge Rum, made by blending the finest Caribbean rums with Bara brith, Glengettie black tea and Shirgar butter, is a new drink perfect for weddings. The creators, Gregor, Nick and Robin, were inspired by the story of the Devil’s Bridge – a legendary tale of Welsh spirit based on the Cambrian Mountains near Aberystwyth. The team wanted to help showcase the country and its produce to the world by creating a premium brand using Welsh flavours in new and exciting ways. Gregor tells us: “We bring the best of Wales, the best of the Caribbean and the most stunning branding together to make a drink like no other. Despite our brand’s young age, we’re proud to have won two golds in the World Rum Awards. We also won gold in the London Spirits Competition and bronze in the International Spirits Challenge 2021. We want our company to become the biggest premium rum in the UK and are confident we can achieve this.” Head over to www.devilsbridgerum.com for more information.

REAL WEDDINGS

Drink it all in Emily and Lloyd danced the night away with friends and family at Llanerch Vineyard Images courtesy of The Storyteller UK

E

mily and Lloyd met while working at a shop 10 years ago. “I was attracted to his smile and funny sense of humour,” says Emily. “He proposed in Rhossili at the Worms Head on 20th October, 2018. Lloyd pretended he wanted to take a picture, and I was panicking saying I could see the sea coming in and the waves were getting closer. He got down on one knee and asked the question. I literally burst out laughing and forgot to say yes! I eventually did, looked at the ring on my finger, grabbed my things and shouted for the dog to come quickly and left Lloyd to get the camera and everything else. The lifeguards were so concerned that they raised the alarm and were shouting over the tannoy for us to come back to land. We made it back to strangers cheering and clapping. We had sandwiches and champagne on dry land and enjoyed the view. It was a lovely surprise even though I knew Lloyd was up to something as he kept talking about the sandwiches all week and tidying the house!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

25

Llanerch Vineyard was the only venue we looked at. My mum and I were there having a drink, and I said I liked it, so we messaged the wedding coordination to see if I could look around, and she was available then and there. It’s a beautiful setting and close to where we lived. She showed us the marquee, and I fell in love. It was empty, so a real blank canvas, but I just loved the light, airy feel. There were also fairylights up, and my mum said that I had once told her I wanted them at my wedding, so it felt meant to be. I took Lloyd to see it, and he agreed it was perfect for us.

Flowers mean so much to me, and they were the main decorative touch. We chose gorgeous white and pink arrangements from Catherine Gray Flowers.

The table plan was a large mirror that my cousin decorated. We used Welsh numbers as table names in wood and silver.

We decided to have a naked cake with a few flowers. It was four layers and made up of Victoria sponge, lemon, Nutella, chocolate, peaches and champagne.

Lloyd and I didn’t want too many decorations as we loved the venue so much and didn’t want to take anything away from it. We had our initials in big lights and placed blankets outside in pretty baskets.

Our venue provided food and drink throughout the day. We had canapés on arrival, followed by a three-course meal and a hog roast in the evening.

REAL WEDDINGS

Lloyd and the groomsmen chose their suits from Hawkes Bespoke Outfitters in Cardiff.

I chose a Paloma Blanca design from Laura May Bridal. I thought I’d have a big princess gown, but looking back, it wasn’t me. I loved the plain, simple look of my dress and accessorised with earrings, a bracelet, a veil and my nan’s wedding ring.

The bridesmaids opted for pink True Bride gowns from Laura May Bridal. It was a simple design with a low back that matched my dress.

We had the best band called 24K! They had everyone on the dancefloor all night, and they partied with us, which was amazing. My favourite moment was getting ready with my bridesmaids and parents. Lloyd also enjoyed his time with the groomsmen and his dad. My uncle bought them all McDonald’s breakfast, and they went to the local pub.

It really was our perfect day. We wanted all of our friends and family to smile and enjoy themselves, and everyone did. We felt so loved and had so much fun. 27

It was amazing coming back from having our photographs taken to see everyone sat in the sunshine enjoying the views, music and each other’s company. My sister said she was disappointed to see us because she knew that the day would soon be over!

Having my grampy read in the church was so special to us and something we’ll always remember. All the suppliers we used were amazing and made our day perfect. Our parents, bridesmaids and the groomsmen were all so supportive, from organising the hen and stag parties to being there for us on the day.

For our honeymoon, we went to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast and had the best time ever! We both planned the trip and really enjoyed our time together. It was two weeks of Italian food, drinks and lovely scenery. At the end of the night, when the band had left, we all wanted the party to carry on, so we went outside, stood on the benches and sang our hearts out. Singing at the top of our voices was a memory we won’t forget, and we love watching the video back.

The love of my life

After having to cancel their reception, Annabel and Gavin had a heartwarming ceremony at St Tewdrics House Images courtesy of Lewis Fackrell Photography

REAL WEDDINGS

A

nnabel and Gavin met at work 10 years ago. “We were in different departments, but Gavin asked me out on a date,” says Annabel. “I wasn’t sure at first about dating a coworker, but I decided to give him a chance and accepted the offer.” Gavin proposed in September 2018. “We were enjoying a staycation in Bideford, Devon, with our beloved rescue dog,” shares the bride. “On the final day, we walked the coastal path to Clovelly, and when we arrived at a beautiful beach called Mouthmill, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was perfect.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We made a list of requirements that our venue had to have, and St Tewdrics House ticked all the boxes,” Annabel recalls. “It was the only property we visited, and we booked it the same day! We didn’t want to be restricted by caterers, drinks packages and partner suppliers, so the flexibility they offered was really appealing. We also loved the exclusively, on-site accommodation and that it was dog friendly.” For their favours, the happy couple created gift bags. “Each one contained goodies that we splurged on when our reception was cancelled,” explains the bride. “Our guest received a special pin badge from The Stroke Association, a charity close to our hearts, Welshcakes from Calon Lân Cakes, a candle, handmade face mask and bottle of Prosecco. We really wanted to spoil our friends and family and thank them for all their support and for attending our wedding.” “Catherine Gray Flowers was super helpful,” Annabel adds. “I took a swatch of the bridesmaids’ dresses to her workshop and some vague colour ideas. She then designed idea boards and produced something absolutely perfect. I knew I wanted colourful blooms, and we were so happy with them. She also accommodated our last minute order increase.” Annabel and Gavin purchased their big-day bake from DeVoli Cakes. “We found them at an event at St Tewdrics House,” says the bride. “Her designs were showstopping, and we were drawn to her amazing sugar flowers! She designed our cake during the lockdown with limited input from us, but it was exactly what we wanted. Since our reception was cancelled, we had it delivered and set up in our kitchen instead.” “We’d been admiring the work of Lumi Event and booked them right away,” shares Annabel. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to have all the finishing touches we wanted, but they were incredibly flexible and understanding and worked with our adjusted plans. The lighting was so romantic and our ‘wish you were here’ board featuring photos of all the guests who couldn’t come was a meaningful touch.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My dress was called Georgia from Stephanie Allin Couture,” Annabel recalls. “From the moment I saw her designs, I knew I was going to get my gown from her. Her dresses are incredible quality, simple but unique and fit to perfection. I didn’t originally want a ballgown, but it was really light, and I felt like the best version of me in it! I was also very keen to get a dress from a British/Welsh designer as I wanted to support local companies where possible. I accessorised with a matching veil by Helen Martin. I didn’t intend to get a long veil, but the pandemic caused chaos to the rest of our plans, and since my accessories were a decision totally within my control, I went for it! Stephanie also added a custom foldaway lapel that I could pin my MBE insignia to for the ceremony. My hairpiece was a bespoke design from Rachel Sokha. Rachel worked with me to create something that perfectly complimented my dress and veil. It featured subtle gold leaves and white flowers with pearl centres and was breathtaking. I borrowed earrings from my nan, who was unable to attend as she was shielding. It was special to me to be able to wear them – they were beautiful but also made me feel like she was with me on the day.” Gavin chose a tailored suit from Hugo Boss in Cardiff. “The team helped him pick it and coordinated his tie with the bridesmaids’ dresses,” explains the bride. “They were fantastic and made the most classic and flattering design that we will treasure for years to come. The best man and groomsmen wore two-piece suits and ties from ASOS in the same shade.” “The bridesmaids opted for a gown called Edie by TH&TH,” adds Annabel. “We had to shop for the dresses during the lockdown, so it was a challenge, but the 31 

TIME TO CELEBRATE “After the ceremony, we were lucky enough to have a few hours of glorious weather for our photos,” says the bride. “After this, everyone headed home, and we set up our online reception. This included speeches, toasts and the first dance in our kitchen! We were determined to do as much as possible to celebrate our day, and we certainly did.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The happy couple were full of nerves and excitement on the morning of the wedding. “It was the most blissful day, but it was somewhat bittersweet as so many people couldn’t be with us,” shares Annabel. “Gavin also felt the pressure of having to manage the online streams of our ceremony and reception! By the time we were enjoying our first dance, we both felt relieved that we’d managed to get married and have the best possible day. There were moments in the weeks leading up to the wedding that made us wonder whether we’d be able to do it at all, so we were incredibly thankful to have been able to get married on the day.” “One of our favourite moments was when our rescue dog, Sissy Sock, carried the rings during the ceremony,” Annabel recalls. “She wore a collar of fresh flowers from our florist and stole the show! We also loved dancing to Metallica in our kitchen – a far cry from our original vision but every bit as special.” Annabel and the bridesmaids purchased bespoke face masks for the day. “The girls had one-off designs in the same fabric as their dresses, and I had a mask that was made by my dress designer,” explains the bride. “ We also commissioned 30 face masks for our guests – there were four different designs in our wedding colours, embroidered with our initials and wedding date. It was the perfect memento of a pandemic wedding!” “We were astounded by the understanding and empathy shown by all of our suppliers and guests,” adds Annabel. “This past year has been tough on everyone, but people went out of their way to make our day special. Our suppliers had few or no weddings that year but put our needs above their own. They listened to us moan, cry and rant and supported us through all of it! We were forced into so many lastminute changes and cancellations, and they navigated the practicalities and legalities with compassion. We knew they were suffering too, but they never shared that burden with us. Every single supplier far exceeded our expectations, and we couldn’t have been happier. Some of our guests travelled hundreds of miles to attend our 30 minute ceremony with all of the enthusiasm and excitement we’d imagine for an allday event. They encouraged us in a way that gave us the strength and certainty to get married in a pandemic and reminded us of what was really important. We assumed people would think we were wrong to get married, that we were being reckless or selfish, but on the contrary, the absolute joy and love we felt was overwhelming.”

REAL WEDDINGS

A DAY TO Melissa and Matthew had a beautiful celebration at Fairyhill Images courtesy of Chris Andrews Photography

M

elissa and Matthew first met on Tinder in March 2014. “We matched when I was home from University, but I went back shortly after,” says Melissa. “After months of talking, Matt came to visit me for our first official date, and we’ve been inseparable ever since!” Matthew proposed on 5th January, 2019 at Southerndown Beach. “It was the day before my 24th birthday, and we’d gone for a walk on the beach,” shares the bride. “I never wanted a big proposal and the idea of him getting down on one knee for everyone to see filled me with dread. We walked to the top of the cliff, overlooking the beach, close to where we had sat on one of our first dates, and he asked if I wanted to be his wife. I was so shocked that I’m not sure I even said yes! That morning he had gone to collect a delivery and was gone for ages! Later I learned that he was ringing my parents to ask for my dad’s permission, and he called his parents to let them know. He proposed with a temporary ring, and we went shopping a few days later to find the perfect one.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 37 

My favourite moment was the first look. I stood at the top of the stairs, waiting to walk down and see Matt for the first time in my dress. INSPIRATION FLOWERS

JUST THE TWO OF US Intimate wedding inspiration

A

s a result of COVID-19, couples are now looking to have intimate nuptials, so to help you create the perfect celebration, we’ve rounded up some of the region's best suppliers and asked for their top tips on creating a fabulous wedding with a small guest list.

MEET CLAIRE FROM HOOKEDIN COTTON

07872 970 968 | www.hookedincotton.co.uk

www.alsphotography.co.uk

If you’re busy planning an intimate wedding, do not let it stop you from including beautiful macramé bohemian style décor. Arrange a workshop and spend some time with your mum and bridesmaids learning how to create your favours. Make sure you give yourself a few weeks if you want to create chair backs or vase wraps. Check your suppliers are sustainable and have a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certificate to ensure you’re being kind to the planet. Try making favours with a dual purpose, so they have a longer lifespan, but most importantly, take your time and have fun adding personality into your day. I was involved with two intimate weddings, one was on a dreamy farm with a gourmet chef preparing a beautiful banquet, and the other was on a remote beach. Both couples got to spend time with every person without rushing, and it was lovely to witness the relationship between them. Each guest left with a handmade gift and thank you note from the couple. One of the brides and her bridesmaids spent time knotting chair backs designed to later tie to driftwood as wall hangings which she was going to gift to special friends at their big beach celebration a few weeks later.

MEET DJ ALAN MATTHEWS FROM CARDIFF WEDDING DISCO

07800 845 014 | www.cardiffweddingdisco.co.uk

With many years of experience under my belt, I can safely say that smaller weddings are extra special. It reduces the amount of stress on everyone involved, saves money and having your closest friends and family around you creates an amazing atmosphere. I was a guest at my sister-in-law’s wedding in Gretna Green, where there were only 15 people, and I can honestly say it was one of the best weddings I’ve been to. When booking a DJ, make sure they’re local to you and not based hundreds of miles away. Check that their feedback is up-to-date. Some suppliers have positive comments on their websites with no dates, so do your research. Book your supplier as early as possible. We’re now dealing with couples on their third cancellation date, so eventually, it’s all going to catch up, and everyone will already be booked up. Your entertainer should be completely understanding and cooperative should you need to postpone. If you need to move your date, contact all your vendors and throw some dates around and see what comes out best between them. Alternatively, if you need to cancel, all deposits/monies paid should be 100 per cent refundable, if they cannot promise this, then look elsewhere! 43

Start by looking for your venue. The space should feel comfortable and like a second home. I chose my wedding venue based on my family’s connection to where my late grampy was once an executive chef. When I went for a viewing, they gave me the grand tour, which is an important part of the process as it's all about making connections. When booking suppliers, don’t jump into it based on price alone. Chat with them about your vision for the day and see if they’re the right supplier for you. In these uncertain times, ask if deposits and payments are transferable to a new date and, if not, what the policies are for refunds. I personally have changed several dates and refunded deposits whenever possible. Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times in your life, so spread the joy and love, tell everyone, chat with potential suppliers and remember it’s never too early to book.

MEET WEDDING DRESS EXPERT RACHEL PARRY FROM BRECON BRIDAL BOUTIQUE

01874 622 525 | www.facebook.com/breconbridalboutique Planning an intimate wedding? Here are some tips to help you find your dream wedding dress: Give yourself plenty of time – Made-to-order dresses take up to six months to be made and delivered to your chosen boutique, so start shopping with plenty of time to spare. Around nine to 12 months before is a good starting point. Don’t panic – If you don’t have loads of time on your hands, then don’t panic! Talk to your bridal boutique, they may be able to order certain dresses in a shorter amount of time or offer a selection of off-thepeg gowns, which means you can take them away on the day of your appointment. Stick to your budget – If you have a budget in mind, then it’s always a good idea to ask the boutiques you’re planning to visit what their price ranges are. There is no point visiting a store if the gowns they stock are

over and above what you’re willing to spend. Bring this up with your bridal consultant at your appointment, that way they’ll know not to put you in any dresses that drastically exceed your budget. If you’re happy to go a little bit over, then let them know that too – it’s all about communication! COVID-19 – Before your appointment, make sure to ask if there are any safety measures ahead of time. Each boutique is different, and COVID-19 measures may vary. Some may allow you to bring four guests while others may say two, so ask ahead of time to ensure you’re prepared. Ask questions – During your appointment, don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think it’s silly. Trust me, we don’t mind, and it’s what we’re there for. I get asked everything ranging from: do you have a seamstress to what shoes and underwear should I wear? Remember, the only stupid question is the one you didn’t ask. Have fun and don’t worry about what other people might think – Now is the time to have fun with your dress and pick out the style you’ve always dreamed of. Just because the wedding is small doesn’t mean you have to have a certain style of dress. If you want the big princess gown, then go for it! There are no rules when it comes to wedding dresses, so wear what you want! As long as you feel confident, it’ll shine through, and everyone will think you look like a million bucks.

MEET CELEBRANT CAROL GUNTER FROM YOUR SPECIAL CELEBRATION

INSPIRATION FLOWERS

07724 608 149 | www.yourspecialcelebration.co.uk As a result of COVID-19, many couples have decided to opt for a small intimate wedding. Given the freedom that a celebrant wedding ceremony offers, it’s the ideal option for a small and personal service. Before deciding on a celebrant, think about what you want. Small and intimate can mean different things to different people, so make some decisions or if you’re not sure, discuss options with your celebrant. They will want to create a bespoke ceremony for you, so the more information you can provide the better. When choosing your celebrant, it’s important that you connect. I always suggest an initial face-to-face or virtual meeting for this reason. Be sure to book as early as possible. Many couples are setting tradition aside and welcoming the freedom of a celebrant ceremony, so book early to avoid disappointment. You should ask for details of what’s included in the quoted costs. Prices may vary depending on whether or not you wish to include additional enhancements such as handfasting, a unity candle ceremony or a sand ceremony, to name but a few. These are ideal for a smaller ceremony and are a lovely way of including family and friends. I commit to one ceremony per day, so there are no time restrictions, and the day belongs to you. Your service will start when you’re ready and last as long as you want. If the dreaded COVID-19 strikes again and we need to reschedule, that won’t be a problem, and you won’t incur any additional costs.

OUR TOP TIPS ON CHOOSING A FLORIST

When it comes to your flowers, keep things simple. Your big-day blooms are a great way of showing your personalities and incorporating your chosen theme or colour scheme. There are a wide variety of arrangements available, and by using them on a smaller scale, you’ll be able to save money. Keep in mind that some flowers are seasonal and may be difficult to source or too expensive to purchase at different times of the year. If you have your heart set on a particular flower, talk to your florist and ask if there are any alternatives or if there’s any way you can purchase artificial versions. These often look great and can be preserved as a memento of your special day. Although your wedding is small, it doesn’t mean you can’t make the space beautiful. Look for table arrangements, flower walls, bouquets, buttonholes and flower crowns. The list is endless. Skim through social media and magazines to try and find inspiration and show your findings to your chosen supplier so they have something to work with.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES Our experts solve your problems

MOMENTS THAT MATTER

Q – How can we make our ceremony fun and memorable? Your wedding ceremony is typically the first time you will be in front of all your family and friends, so it’s important that it feels like the most authentic representation of who you are as a couple. One way to do this is through your music choices. For example, if you’re into rock or rap, incorporating these genres into your service can show off some of the things that make you both special. There are many ways to incorporate fun elements into your big day, from dramatic entrances to games and activities for guests during the cocktail hour. You could do a sand, candle or bubble ceremony, have a fun reading or even incorporate an animal. Having your precious pooch bring the rings down to the best man or woman is an adorable addition to any wedding. One of the most popular options is called The Unity Candle. This involves two candles being lit at the beginning of the service and then put together as one. The flame represents your love for each other as well as your commitment to being together through thick and thin. This is also something that the whole family can be a part of. Q – We’re planning a summer wedding for next year. What colours and styles would you suggest our mums look for? Hopefully, spring/summer 2022 will be the year of weddings with colours reflecting what will be an uplifting and energising year whilst restoring balance into our lives. Take inspiration from the orchid flower, an intense hue of magenta alongside a natural shade of olive. Butter yellow and mango sorbet are also dominant tones set to storm the catwalks, with the most predicted one being Atlantic blue. So, where does this leave our motherof-the-brides/grooms? The dress only option is becoming more sort after rather than the uniform dress with jacket. Bolder shades are also more popular with fashionconscious women who are opting for rewearable outfits that can be pulled from the wardrobe for other occasions, and designers are quick to pick up on that. Timeless styles and lightweight fabrics are replacing more structured shapes to allow your mum the freedom to dance the night away. However, it’s always important to remember that your mum has to feel comfortable and confident in her chosen outfit, so it’s essential she tries on lots of different looks, shapes and colours. INTIMATE ROMANCE

Q – Do you have any tips for planning a small wedding? Sit back, close your eyes and walk through what you would like to happen on your day from start to finish and ask yourself what will impact the joy of the day? What will help take the stress out? What highlights do you imagine? Who do you want to share it with the most, and how will you be able to make memories that will last? We recently had a family wedding with only 15 guests. For us, the most important parts of the day were that the people who matter to us were participating in the ceremony, we had a Zoom broadcast to all those who couldn’t attend, plenty of photos, memorable music and a very tasty cake! As restrictions ease, it’s important to plan ahead so that you’re not struggling to book suppliers. It’s worth doing the following research: ❤ See evidence of their work and past reviews. ❤ If possible, meet in person or have a video conference. ❤ Check what is included in quoted prices. ❤ Determine what booking fee or deposit your suppliers require. If you’re having an intimate gathering, don’t think about abandoning the entertainment. If you have a DJ/MC or singer, they can be the glue that holds the day together. People may have travelled a long way and music can entertain and untie people and also keep them at the venue longer. Remember, music doesn’t need to be loud, but it needs to be relevant. I know I could spend hours preparing music for a forthcoming wedding, and it’s so important that the couple connects with what they hear. It’s worth having a plan of action to go forward. Make a table with two columns. One should be ‘what we do if only small numbers are possible’, and the other should be ‘if things get back to normal.’ Consider the impact of each on your guests and the flexibility of your suppliers and venue. Ensure your vendors are in this with you. See what they can do to fit with the new situation. I hope you enjoy your preparations and ensure you savour the moment! June Gould (DJ June Cecilia) DJ www.sgdjweddings.com

PERFECT FIT

Q – How long before the wedding should we get in touch with an alterations company, and what should we expect from our first appointment? ❤ Book an appointment at least three months before the wedding. ❤ You’ll receive a reminder two weeks before your first appointment. ❤ The first appointment will be a no-obligation consultation where all your alterations will be discussed free of charge. ❤ You will be given an approximate cost, and if you’re happy for them to carry out your changes, you should be able to leave your dress with them with no storage fee or deposit required. ❤ At the end of your appointment, dates for further fittings will be made, and you’re encouraged to stay in contact between appointments if you have any questions or concerns. SLICE AS NICE

Q – My wife-to-be and I want a vegan wedding cake that ties in with our summer theme. Do you have any ideas? Summer weddings are fabulous because you have the choice of so many fruits, colours and flavours. Our favourite cakes to make are tiered creations where each layer is a different flavour that all complement each other. When it comes to texture and flavour, our cakes taste the same as non-vegan versions, and your guests won’t notice the difference. Sarah Powney Vegan cake expert www.thenakedvegan.co.uk 54

group of South Wales wedding professionals worked together to create this boho-themed shoot at Rosedew Farm. Claire from Hookedin Cotton tells us more: “In the middle of a renovation, I saw a post from a local wedding venue about a surprise they had to bring some Christmas joy to all after a very difficult year. I responded and was asked to join in, and without hesitation I did! I’m forever grateful as that led to this day, this week and more! I met an amazing tribe of creative people blossoming through lockdown despite dealing with their own challenges. With restrictions beginning to lift, we decided to join forces to pull together some boho wedding goodness to inspire brides planning their big days. Thank you, Rosedew Farm, for bringing us together, believing in us and having us back! Del’s Event Design styled the space, which Andy and Sacha from A.L.S Photography captured perfectly. Tina from Forever Green Blooms helped push me out of my comfort zone and supported my vision, and Ginger Bear Bakery filled us with sugar and gorgeous wedding cakes that wowed us all! Jon Anthony Design saved the day with textured suits and crisp white shirts to show off the groom’s products, and Mel from Willow in White Bridal Co provided the most stunning gowns. It was an amazing collaboration, and I’m bursting with pride that we managed to create such an amazing set of images all while creating new friendships.” 57

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

H

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

PRETTY AS A PICTURE Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the

BRIDE’S DIARY

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.

Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.

We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

A room full of candles is a must!

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row of diamonds that match my engagement ring.

I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for a very natural look.

Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.

This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 67

hen this styled shoot landed in our inbox, we just knew our lovely readers would adore it. To find out more, we spoke to the photographer Anthony Crothers, who tells us: “Sarah Meyrick and I met a few years ago while working on a creative portrait shoot. Since then, we have worked on several shoots together and came to realise that we make a good team. We decided to arrange a bridal shoot to help showcase our talents and set about looking for a venue willing to allow us to use their facilities. We were delighted when Charlotte from Mounton

Brook Lodge let us use the lovely venue for the whole day. We’ve made new friends that were happy to supply dresses, flowers, cakes, a car and accessories. We also had some wonderful models that were a pleasure to photograph and work with. With our plans being disrupted by the COVID-19 restrictions, we all felt it was important to have an opportunity to show what we could achieve together. Everyone involved put themselves out and worked hard to make it a success, and it was truly a collaborative effort.” 73 

BUZZ

BYE BYE TO DRY

When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

BEAUTY NEWS

ROSY GLOW

Some exciting newness from Pixi Beauty has hit the shelves recently and I’m nuts about the +Rose Glow-y Powder (£14) in particular. This silky soft, rose infused, https://youtu.be/EO3_TuWvc3E multi-use powder can be applied as a veil of blush or highlighter adding a touch of radiance and luminosity as it brightens the complexion. What’s more, the natural mineral formula contains ceremides to give time-release moisture to the skin. Click play and check out the bridal look I’ve created using this beauty with the Flawless Beauty Primer, +C Under Eye Brightener, Endless Shade Stick in pink quartz and Endless Silky Eye Pen in black noir. All of which are available at https://pixibeauty.co.uk

THE CLEANSING EXPRESS

Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk

POLISH PERFECTION

Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.

SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk

BE AT PEACE

Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com

HAIR REPAIR

If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 91

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley

A

nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 92

Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry

strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair

BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrient-dense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution

to haircare. The integrity of a product and what hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients.

❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-ordeath situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 93

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

HAIR GOALS

Q – Should I book a hair and make-up trial? If so, what should I expect? You may have secured your date with a hair and make-up artist, but as we all have different ideas and tastes, it’s essential you book a taster session with them. Once your hair and make-up trial has commenced, both yourself and your artist will know what to expect on the day. It’s a great time to provide feedback and discuss any adjustments you wish to make. After all, you need to feel comfortable, confident and beautiful on your wedding day. I love meeting brides-to-be during the consultation. Although this may take four hours, it’s the only time I have to get to know you and find your perfect look. Maya Jasinska Hair and make-up artist www.loxushairandmakeup.com 94

TREND SETTER

Q – What hair and make-up styles are on trend? A popular hairstyle is soft Hollywood waves accessorised with pearl pins or a headband. I’ve also seen a rise in textured up dos with fresh flowers or flower crowns, which is perfect for outdoor weddings with a relaxed boho vibe. For your make-up, soft glamour with brown smoky eyes and gold pigments will make your eyes pop. Finish with wispy lashes, a bronzer and a nude lip. Alternatively, you could opt for the oh-so-popular fresh, dewy look. It’s a very natural style that concentrates on the skin with dusky pinks and rose golds for the eyes, blush on the cheeks and a nude or pink for the lips.
