YOUR VISION IS OUR MISSION! “We had June DJ our entire wedding from start till finish, she did an outstanding job. Not only was the music fantastic (everyone on the dance floor), she went above and beyond on the lighting and the LED dance floor so the venue looked incredible. She recorded all of our speeches which is wonderful to have as a memory. I would highly recommend SG Discos” - Theo & Kathleen

Swansea-based Pressed Forever has launched a new website and range of additional services. Launched in March 2020, the owner Cressy Knuckey began coming up with new ways to use her growing pressed flower collection. What started as a small project evolved into a growing business with many services from custom jewellery to dried bouquets. Cressy creates bridesmaids’ necklaces and men’s cufflinks and can press and preserve your wedding flowers into beautiful jewellery. As part of her new service, Cressy is offering table favours and custom-made jewellery, which would make a lovely wedding gift. Following their A Gift from the Heart campaign, luxury jewellers Laings has donated £5,000 to the British Heart Foundation (BHF). The BHF is a charity that resonates personally with the Laing family, and they are dedicated to helping them raise vital funds. The campaign was a special way to say thank you for all of the life-saving work they do. Stuart McDowell, the retail director at Laings, told us: “We’re delighted to be able to support such a valuable charity, and we hope that our donation will help work towards life-changing differences as they continue their vital work. We know that the BHF has faced huge challenges in the past year and understand that they still need our support. Their research must continue as they work towards a better future, and it’s a privilege to be able to help in any way that we can.” Visit www.laingsuk.com and www.bhf.org.uk for more information. 9
CONGRATULATIONS!
One Vision Photography has won Best Wedding Photographer and Videographer in Wales at the Global Wedding Awards 2021. We spoke to the director, Michael Lundbeck, to find out more about the company: “We’re passionate about taking beautiful photographs and discovering and unfolding the emotional connections that bind people together. It’s my goal as a photographer to capture your special day, not only in a way that tells your story without words but in a way that will remind you both of all the beautiful emotion that surrounds you and your lover. My approach to photographing weddings is simple. I let the day unfold, untouched and unrehearsed. You will never see me pause a moment or ask you to repeat a pose since, after all, the best moments are the ones that happen naturally. Since every wedding is unique and different, I try to walk into each one with an open eye and mind to find the best way to capture the event.” Head over to www.1visionphotography.com for more information.
Delicious treats
FudgePots, a micro-business in Cowbridge specialising in spiced and unusual fudges, is planning to supply premium shops with luxurypackaged products. Perfect as wedding favours, the company was created when founders Rita Som and Catrin Thomas-Price, decided to combine Catrin’s mum’s fudge recipe with Rita’s knowledge of Indian cuisine. The duo offers vegan versions, standard flavours and fun, exotic options. “The process has already begun, and I can tell you, it’s a long journey from standing in wellies in open fields, delivering sales patter to passing punters, to the comfort of packing up regular shop deliveries,” says Catrin. “Nobody knew what the flavours were, but they attracted crowds from the outset, first at farmers’ markets and then at food and drink festivals. I wish lots of luck to all other entrepreneurs out there, and I hope that ours is not the only start-up to have experienced a silver lining during lockdown.” To find out more, visit www.fudgepots.co.uk

NEW AND IMPROVED
West Farm Southerndown Coastal Retreat, formally The Barn at West Farm, is set to open in June 2021. All set within the converted barn which sits on the cliff tops between Dunraven Bay and Ogmore-by-Sea, the venue will include a café that will be open all year round, offering light lunches, snacks and cakes made from local ingredients. The retreat will also feature three luxury self-catering properties, including a renovated farmhouse and two high-end apartments, all set on the cliff-top next to some of the best beaches in Wales. “West Farm sits in one of the most enviable locations in South Wales,” says Katie Phillips, the project director. “It’s a popular route for walkers and cyclists, a short walk to some of the best beaches in Wales and has some incredible views over the sea. Everyone in the area knows and loves the property, so we wanted to create something that Southerndown could be proud of and rely on, including a great quality local café where everyone feels welcome from cyclists and dog walkers to local families and tourists visiting our beautiful coast. As restrictions lift in Wales, we also hope to hold lots of exciting events at West Farm, including live music, art exhibitions and family events. We are proud to be breathing new life into this local treasure and supporting the region’s economy wherever we can. We know that there are so many couples who would love to have a beautiful coastal wedding here. However, until we can offer our couples the very best experience, without strict restrictions, for now, we will only be taking names to be added to our waiting list for next year.” For more information visit www.westfarmsoutherndown.com and to be added to the wedding waiting list, email info@westfarmsoutherndown.com

REAL WEDDINGS
Timeless ELEGANCE Despite having to re-plan their big day, Emily and Richard had a gorgeous wedding at Insole Court Images courtesy of Honeydew Moments
E
mily and Richard met almost eight years ago during a night out in Cardiff. “We both lived in the same area and have lots of mutual friends,” says Emily. “I had seen him working out in the gym that I used to work at and always thought he was very handsome.” Richard proposed after six years together. “We had just purchased our first house and were openly discussing marriage,” shares the bride. “He had been out for the day, and little did I know he had travelled to London to collect my engagement ring! I had my head in the fridge preparing dinner, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee. It was perfect, and the ring was incredible!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 29
Due to COVID-19, our original wedding plans were no longer able to go ahead. We had originally chosen to have a June wedding at a different venue, however, when lockdown started and restrictions became more strict, we struggled to imagine our dream wedding taking place there. We realised we just wanted to be married and a big celebration could wait. We changed our venue to Insole Court as it was a romantic and magical setting. We were only allowed 15 guests, which was initially really hard to accept, but we decided to have just immediate family.
As we only had 13 guests at our reception, we opted for a top table for myself and Richard and a long table with our family members lining each side.
My incredible auntie, Glyn, created our wedding cake. It was two-tiers and made up of raspberry and white chocolate sponge covered in buttercream. We wanted it to be simple and elegant, so we decorated it with sprigs of holly around each tier. 30
I ordered personalised Christmas ornaments for all of our guests with their names on.
My amazing mum, Ruth, ordered and designed my bouquet and the buttonholes. I wanted something simple and elegant, so we decided on white roses. We lined the aisle with mirrored plates and candles. She also ordered mini-Christmas trees, which were decorated with green, red and tartan bows and twinkling lights.
As a surprise, my amazing parents rented an old-fashioned wedding car. It was so special and one of my favourite parts of the day. It allowed me to have one-on-one time with my dad before the ceremony, which was lovely.
REAL WEDDINGS
We had originally hired a private dining area at a restaurant, however, due to lockdown restrictions, they were unable to accommodate us. We then spoke to Spiros, who was phenomenal. We had a smoked salmon starter, followed by beef wellington and an assortment of desserts.
Richard always takes pride in his appearance, and purchasing a oneof-a-kind suit was always his dream. He initially wanted to wear navy and grey, however, due to lockdown restrictions, this wasn’t possible. We decided to make it a black-tie theme and asked all our guests to dress to the nines. Richard wanted to stand out still and found a deep forest green velvet jacket.
I had seen a Rebecca Ingram dress online and knew it was the one for me. I visited Allison Jayne in Swansea, which was particularly special as it’s the same shop that my lovely mum bought her gown from. I wanted something classic and timeless. Allison took my appointment and had an amazing sense of style. She showed me a hair crown that was covered in beautiful pearls, diamantés and embellishments, which was perfect. On the day, I hired the incredible Victoria Fox Makeup Artist who made me feel so beautiful.
Unfortunately, we were unable to have any entertainment, so I made a killer Spotify playlist and made sure our friends and family had their dancing shoes at the ready.
Richard and I were blown away by how beautiful both of our mums looked. We had a girly day out back in January 2020 where they bought their outfits, but COVID-19 stopped them from being able to collect them in time. Instead, they found gorgeous festive dresses and paired them with fur stoles.
We had bittersweet feelings ahead of the wedding; we were excited to finally get married but sad that we couldn’t have our best friends and family there. However, it was the best decision. The whole day was so magical – the weather in the days leading up to the wedding was full of torrential rain – so when I woke up to beautiful blue skies and glorious sunshine, I knew the day was going to be perfect.
31
We invited some of our friends to come and stand in the grounds so they could share some of our day with us. This was special for both of us, and getting to see my best friends and have Richard’s best men with us was wonderful.
During the ceremony, I had one of my oldest friends do a reading for us via Zoom. She read a very special poem she had written for us, and it meant she got to be a part of our day, even if it was through a screen.
Richards’s wedding speech was probably the most special moment for me. He spoke so well and made us laugh and cry. I haven’t seen my 93-year-old grandma laugh like that in years!
One of my favourite moments was when Richard and I took our first steps outside as a married couple. Our amazing photographer, Honeydew Moments, caught the moment that all of our friends and family threw confetti, and the pictures look incredible.

Chelsea and Huw tied the knot in a romantic ceremony at Llanerch Vineyard Images courtesy of Megan-Siân Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
C
helsea and Huw met in the most unexpected way. “We were in a Tesco car park when he accidentally knocked my wing mirror while reversing out of the space next to me,” says Chelsea. “He waited until I returned to my car to make sure there was no damage. For his sake, luckily there wasn’t, but he gave me his number just in case, and the rest is history.” Huw proposed on his birthday in 2019. “We went to Edinburgh on a midweek break to celebrate as Huw is a huge scotch and whisky lover,” shares the bride. “He managed to hide the ring in a pair of socks in his hand luggage. On the second day, we had a tour of Edinburgh Castle booked and while we were at the very top, enjoying the view, he tried to get down on one knee. As I’m quite shy, I asked him to get up as there was a huge group of students passing by! Two minutes later, the castle cannon was fired, and it felt as though it was meant for us. I was sort of expecting a proposal but never thought he would do it on his birthday! He told me I was the best birthday present he could have ever wished for.”
SETTING THE SCENE “Llanerch Vineyard was the first venue we viewed,” explains Chelsea. “It was always on my dream board and we viewed it the day after a wedding, so nothing was set up, but the place was so beautiful that we could see its potential. From the gorgeous grounds and vines to the Calon Lodge and Woodland Marquee, it couldn’t have been more perfect. The fairylights and candles made it look so romantic, and even though we had planned for 100 guests, having 30 of our nearest and dearest made it all the more special. The team are so amazing at what they do, and we can’t thank them enough.” For their favours, the couple opted for personalised glass jar candles tied with blue ribbons. “Our flowers were wreaths and dome centrepieces with winter foliage, acorns and white roses from Best Buds by Samara,” reveals the bride. “For our place names, we chose glass hanging hearts that our guests could hang from their Christmas trees.” Their big-day bake was made by The Cake Cwtch. “It was lemon, Nutella, champagne and strawberry flavour,” Chelsea adds. “It was decorated in keeping with our dusky blue, white and rose colour scheme.” “My dad’s partner surprised us with a beautiful vehicle from Singletons Executive Cars,” says the bride. “We had no idea, and when it turned up with a blue bow, I said to my dad that its blue to match the wedding, and he said no she asked for blue to represent Cardiff City F.C.!”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS Chelsea purchased her stunning Morilee gown from All About Eve Bridal. “As a plus-size bride, I was secretly dreading dress shopping after hearing so many horror stories,” shares Chelsea. “I had seen the gown, Pamela, online and as soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one. I managed to find a stockist, and I fell in love right away. The sparkly lace just won me over. The boutique had so many options, and I really enjoyed my shopping experience.” Huw opted for a navy three-piece suit from Skopes Menswear. “He accessorised with brown shoes and a belt,” recalls the bride. “All the men looked super smart, and Huw’s dad lent him his great grandfather’s pocket watch to help him stand out.” The three bridesmaids chose Grecian-style blue dresses from Samantha K’s.
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We originally had lots of entertainment booked for our wedding day, but due to COVID-19, we had to cancel most of it,” Chelsea explains. “Luckily, we were still able to have the amazing cellist, Nerys Clark. We ended up asking her to perform at our ceremony and wedding breakfast. All of our guests loved her, and we had so many lovely comments about her. She honestly helped make our day, she exceeded all our expectations, and there was something to suit everyone.” 35

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I was surprisingly calm on the morning of the wedding and just wanted to enjoy every moment,” says Chelsea. “Huw, on the other hand, was super nervous, but as soon as he saw me, he was filled with excitement. We had our beautiful golden retriever, Marley, as our best dog. He was well behaved, and it was so special to be able to have him there.” The couple’s suppliers and guests made their day extra special. “With everything going on in the world right now, we’re just grateful that we got to have our wedding day, and every single person involved was amazing,” shares the bride. “My beautiful nan, Iona, made the bouquets from artificial flowers, which was such a lovely touch and now we will get to keep them forever. During the week leading up to the wedding, I had two hairdressers cancel because of COVID-19. I found Taryns Freelance-Hair two days before the wedding and messaged her on Facebook in a right state, and she saved the day. She was amazing, and we couldn’t have asked for better, as they say, everything happens for a reason! Lastly, my dad, David, made his speech and powered through his nerves, but as soon as he sat back down, he realised that he had missed out an entire page.”

MEET JO ROBERTS FROM FABULOUS WELSHCAKES LTD 07795 473 224 | sales@fabulouswelshcakes.co.uk www.fabulouswelshcakes.co.uk @fabulouswelshcakes | @fabulouswelshcakes Tell us about your background – how did you start your business? I’ve worked in the food and drink industry all my life and spent many years promoting Welsh food and drink at home and abroad. I love Welshcakes and always wanted to start my own business, so 14 years ago, I took the plunge and started Fabulous Welshcakes. What should couples expect when booking your services? We offer a bespoke service from start to finish. I think it’s really important to treat every customer individually, and we will do whatever we can to meet each couple’s needs. What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why? I don’t have a favourite as such, but we have had some pretty interesting weddings over the years, some of the more unusual shapes we have been asked to make include cowboy boots, fish, lighthouses and Mickey Mouse, to name a few! Wherever I go, if I see a good cutter, I buy it, and luckily I had just come back from Disney with a Mickey cutter in my bag! How long before the wedding should couples book? We’re currently taking bookings for next week and as far away as 2023, so ideally, three months or longer is good, but we will always take bookings at shorter notice. What’s your favourite part of the job? When we have tied favours in a vivid ribbon, and they’re all lined up in their boxes ready for delivery, I sometimes stand back to look at them all and think a job well done! Do you have any top tips for couples looking for Welshcakes? I would ask for a sample, that way you can see the presentation of the favour, the care that has been taken and most importantly the taste. It’s also worth checking if special diets can be accommodated for, we offer vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free options. We have also switched over last year to biodegradable bags, which is a growing consideration for many couples. 47
07855 278 946 | info@cakesespecially.com www.cakesespecially.com @cakesespecially | @cakesespecially Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I’ve always loved baking and making sweet treats. It was my go to activity when I was growing up, and I learnt from my mistakes and had fun in the process. I was quite a proficient baker by the time I left school. I practiced for friends and family for years and built up my decorating skills by attending several courses. I was a laboratory scientist for a few years, and I find that baking is a scientific process – just much more fun! I enrolled in decorating courses which led me to open my own business and teach a class in Abergavenny. My favourite thing in the world is making wedding cakes, from meeting clients right through to the design and set up.

MEET JENNY LEEB-DU TOIT FROM CAKES ESPECIALLY
What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why? I’ve loved all of them, but the most interesting one was where the bride’s mother desired a traditional design, but the bride and groom wanted a Star Wars-themed cake. I combined both ideas by making one side white with yellow roses cascading down, and the other was black with stars and several characters from the film. The two sides were separated by elegant fondant with fabric effect folds. How long before the wedding should couples book? With weddings being postponed over the last year, slots are filling up fast for the end of 2021 and moving into next year – so the sooner, the better! What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part is setting up at the venue. The adrenalin is always high in the week before the wedding, but to see it all come together on the day is magical. It’s also great to meet the venue team and other suppliers.

My name is Claire, and I’m the owner and baker at Teacups and Cupcakes in Cardiff. I’ve always wanted to have a teashop ever since I was a young girl and have been lucky enough to bake in Cardiff for the last five years. I specialise in cupcakes in 30 flavours, to be exact! These are fantastic for weddings as you can offer a variety of different options for your guests and cater for various dietary requirements, so no one is left out. Colours and decorations can match your theme and are a great way of letting your creative side flow. They are often displayed on one of my hireable stands with a top cutting cake so you can still have the cutting picture, giving you that traditional moment but with a modern twist. What should couples expect when booking your services? The joy of booking with Teacups and Cupcakes is that when you meet with me for a free consultation, we can talk about your ideas in my teashop with a brew, and I will have cupcakes to show you on the shelf. We will discuss your design and flavours before I bake your cakes and then set up, if needed, on the day. It’s a real privilege to see the whole job through from consultation to displaying the finished result. What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why? I have created some fabulous cupcake towers, including a monkey and stacks of books. Anything that shows your personality is right up my street. I’m currently making plans for my very own wedding cake! How long before the wedding should couples book? I like to discuss your ideas around eight to 12 months before the big day. I try to be as flexible as possible and have had bookings a month before the wedding, so it’s always worth getting in touch to see what my availability is. My website is fantastic at giving couples ideas, so have a good look through the flavours and page dedicated to weddings. I’m just a call or email away and am always happy to answer any questions and provide quotes. I recommend booking a consultation, so I can get create a bespoke price for your big day. What’s your favourite part of the job? Meeting couples is one of the best parts of the job. I feel honoured to be asked to bake their cake and to be such an integral part of their day. It’s a privilege, and I get so excited hearing all about it. Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Remember to think about what you would enjoy and what flavours are suitable for your guests. I like to ensure that the top cake or personalised bride and groom cupcakes are for them to enjoy. It’s your day, after all.

MEET SARAH POWNEY FROM THE NAKED VEGAN 02921 321 040 | sarah@thenakedvegan.co.uk www.thenakedvegan.co.uk @thenaked_vegan | @thenakedvegan Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I’ve been baking since I could hold a spatula. Since having allergies, I started creating vegan cakes along with a whole range of other delicious delights. My goal was to debunk the myth that vegan creations are bland, boring and contain bonkers ingredients. A few years ago, I decided to take the plunge and started baking for a living. I set up The Naked Vegan and wanted to create fabulous products using only the finest pure naked ingredients, hence the name. I’m always coming up with new ideas and spend months perfecting recipes and designs, because of this, everyone can enjoy my wonderful bakes. My passion is to make the best tasting products that everyone, not just vegans, can enjoy. My cakes are so good that I now have a large customer base of non-vegans. What should couples expect when booking your services? Your wedding cake is unique to you, and it all starts with a phone call to discuss the basics, such as date and location. We can then arrange a consultation to meet and discuss in depth your colours and theme, design requests, flavours, any special dietary requirements we need to be aware of, set up on the day, costs and payment. I usually conduct these at the wedding venue or a suitable relaxed location. I love to keep these informal and will bring samples even if you have not fully committed to a flavour. During the conversation, I will start making some rough sketches of ideas and notes, or if you have pictures, it can help me visualise what we’re discussing. We specialising in making vegan or gluten-free options. All our designs are handcrafted in a vegan-only kitchen, and we will work with you to ensure you have the perfect centrepiece for your special day. Once you’re happy, I’ll put together a final proposal detailing your design, flavours, the number of guests, delivery details and the price. What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why? This is like asking me to choose my favourite child! I love every cake I have ever made because everyone is special, and I’m so honoured to be asked to be a part of the couple’s big day. The bake is the centrepiece of any reception and a great talking point, if it also tastes fabulous, then I have played a small part in their future. How long before the wedding should couples book? Ideally, I would get in touch at least nine to 12 months before to ensure we’re available to make your cake. This also gives me plenty of time to make any changes to ensure everything is perfect on the day. What’s your favourite part of the job? Meeting the happy couple and getting to know them. Bringing all this to fruition when I deliver and set up the cake and knowing how special it is to be part of their wonderful day. Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Decide what type of cake you want but take into account the time of year and where it will be stored as in the hot weather buttercream will melt. Arrange a meeting with your chosen supplier to discuss your needs and ideas and try samples.

Siobhan is currently working full time as Claudine’s apprentice, where she can continue to learn the art of Goldsmithing. Both are also involved in making and designing jewellery, it’s a real team effort. We currently have twenty-six collections on display in the gallery, all have been designed and handmade by us in our in-house workshop. We also have a number of one off pieces that we make, these are firm favourite’s with customers who are after a limited edition piece. We also specialise in handmade engagement and wedding rings. These can be tailored to your design and budget. We will draw and paint up some designs for you, we can also supply a selection of stones for you to view to help you create your unique ring. A large part of our business is our commissions service. This is where a customer can come in and discuss having a piece handmade with us. The customer is involved in every stage of the making process, we also send them progression photos and video’s and invite them in to see us working on their jewellery. At Barr & Co we like to offer a traditional all round good service to all our customers, it’s something we pride ourselves on.

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES
Our experts solve your problems
SNAP HAPPY
Q – Most photographers offer an engagement shoot, but we’re camera shy and don’t know if it’s for us. What are the benefits? We usually do the engagement photo shoot around four to six weeks before the wedding day. This is so we can chat about the day, but the main point is to get to know each other. ❤ As it may have been more than 12 months since you have seen or been in contact with your photographer, it’s a nice way to touch base. ❤ Use the time to get full details about the timings of your wedding day. ❤ Get to know your photographer as they would be following you all day, so it’s very important that you get on. ❤ It’s very important to find out how your supplier works, as it will help everything flow better on the day. Michael Lundbeck Photographer www.1visionphotography.com
BOHO MAGIC
Q – I want to wear beautiful jewellery on my boho-themed wedding day that I can keep for years to come. Do you have any ideas of what I should look for? Here at Anne Morgan Jewellery, we specialise in handmade pieces and exhibit many different jewellers from across the country. This means we have a wide range that we think would fit your boho theme, including pieces from Cara Tonkins Icarus Collection, which layers textured silver feathers that glimmer in the light. Alternatively, you could choose earrings from Anne Morgan’s Erosion Range, her oval earrings come in a range of different colour combinations. Diana Greenwood creates natural jewellery where garden flowers become charms on necklaces and earrings, and Yen has a more delicate movement with fluid and tactile silver pieces. Everything is handmade, which means we can match colour schemes to make a perfect accompaniment for your wedding day. Anne Morgan Jeweller www.annemorganjewellery.com 55
MOMENTS THAT MATTER
www.owenhowellsphotography.co.uk
Q – We’re clueless when it comes to photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture? Having a photo checklist depends on what type of photographer you’re looking for. A traditional photographer will take posed photographs, while a candid photojournalistic may not take any. Some will take a combination and may ask you for a list of essential shots. For example, you might want a group portrait with your family and another with your guests. The internet is loaded with sample lists to help give you some ideas. Talk to your supplier and they will be able to advise you whether or not they require a shot list from you. Most photographers will have lots of experience and will know what pictures to take. STYLED TO PERFECTION
Stylists take the space, your ideas for theme, colours and mood and combine them into a vision that works for you. Some stylists, including ourselves, are prop based, meaning we combine physical props, handmade items, tableware and smaller details with your overall vision. Other suppliers don’t hold stock and are a decorative administration service, bringing in other elements from the outside. Both options can be very effective. You will know very quickly upon speaking to someone whether they understand what you want to achieve. When it comes to couples, they fall broadly into two categories. Those for whom the look and feel are very important and have a clear vision and those who rely on the stylists to make suggestions. Before you contact a supplier, know which couple you are and the route you’re taking. If you’re the former, then send over your moodboard and ask if they have any examples of similar things they’ve done. If the latter, give them the simple details of the interior at your venue and a vague idea of the colours you like. They are likely to ask you for a few keywords to describe you and your style. A good stylist will be able to talk about what you know already and then offer you ideas to what they envisage, stock, charge and how it all works. Chat with your supplier, and you will know very quickly if they are for you. As a stylist, there is nothing better than speaking to a bride or groom struggling with this element and leaving the call excited and knowing exactly what they need. Q – Our wedding is fast approaching, and we need to book our venue stylist, but we’re a little worried about booking someone online that we’ve never met. What should we ask before making a decision?
THE ONE FOR ME
Q – Our wedding planner has suggested we hire a celebrant for our big day, should we book one, and what are the benefits? A celebrant is someone who has the skills and experience to create a bespoke wedding ceremony, just for you and you alone. Unlike more traditional approaches, celebrants focus on what is special to you, with no restrictions on things such as location, content or timing. They are not a legal registrar, so couples tend to do the legal bit a day or two beforehand, freeing them up to have their ceremony whenever and wherever they wish. If you’re attracted by a once in a lifetime experience that reflects what is important to you, then you should book a celebrant. ❤ A celebrant will spend time with you beforehand, getting to know you, translating your style and preferences into a personalised ceremony. ❤ No rules, no must do or can’t dos, only endless choices and options. ❤ Budget-friendly or a complete extravaganza, both are fine or anything in between. ❤ Involvement of family, friends, children or pets is a definite yes. ❤ Additional symbolic ceremonies can be made bespoke to you. ❤ There’s no requirement for a licenced venue, it’s just a case of wherever you want. ❤ Traditional, formal, quirky, romantic, retro, vintage, themed – we can cater for whatever works for you. Want to make a dramatic entrance? A helicopter is sure to impress your guests and is perfect for glamorous celebrations. TOP TIP: Not all properties will be able to cater for a helicopter, so check before booking. 59
A fiery entrance
For an unforgettable experience, why not hire a fire engine with a television and audio system? TOP TIP: Avoid wearing red to ensure you don’t clash with the vehicle.
Ride in style
Perfect for unconventional weddings, a tuk-tuk is sure to keep your loved ones talking and looks great in photographs. TOP TIP: If you’re wearing a ballgown, make sure it fits inside the vehicle.
City lovers
Couples wanting to transport all of their wedding guests should look into hiring a double-decker bus. TOP TIP: With so much space available, you’ll be able to fit everyone on board for pictures. 60

River of dreams
If you’re marrying near the water, a boat might be the perfect transportation for you. Not only will you see some beautiful sights, but you could even have snaps taken as you sail off. TOP TIP: Be careful you don’t get your dress wet.
Travel to your venue like a princess in a romantic horse-drawn carriage. TOP TIP: Have a backup plan in case it rains.
Country loving
Railroads
Made for two
Why not travel by train? Rent a carriage or two and throw a pre-wedding party on board. TOP TIP: Remember, you could experience delays if there’s a problem with the line.
Tractors are far from traditional and offer plenty of photo opportunities. TOP TIP: It might be worth booing alternative transport to take you back to your hotel, as a tractor may take a few hours.
If you’re getting married near the venue, try to think outside of the box and go for something different, such as a scooter. TOP TIP: Make sure your dress is out of the way before you start riding to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions. 61
Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
L
ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on
Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and over-budgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.
THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers 62
and budget, we began the exciting part – looking at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY
Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.
Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.
Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.
Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.
We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.
Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!
This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 63

SILKY SMOOTH
I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my supercute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

MAKING
waves
Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks
82
INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute. If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their bigday, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.
A
ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs event-ready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.
Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere. What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb. How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day? I would say, start with the neckline of your
desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos. What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day. How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together. What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too. For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk
What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 83

Q&A
Irresistible IR5071 Blossom
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
LOOKING FABULOUS
Q – My mum wants to book a consultation with a local boutique but is incredibly nervous. What can she expect from her first appointment? There’s an old Irish proverb, “you’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.” We find the majority of ladies anxiously contemplate finding the perfect outfit and actually find it much easier than they originally thought. Here at Baroque Boutique, we like to get a feel for your special day. We begin with a consultation/informal chat over a glass of bubbly, where we will gain an understanding of what your mum is looking for in an outfit. We will use our expertise and experience to tie in your theme and colour scheme while making sure your mum looks and feels her best. She should come to the appointment open-minded and ready to try on a variety of styles, shapes and colours, even things that weren’t on her radar. It’s important to exclude all possibilities before finding the one. Comfort is key. She needs to be able to move freely and feel confident in her outfit, so we advise sitting in preferred styles and having a little dance – after all, the party is where it’s at. Be prepared for honest opinions and leave size at the door! The label is irrelevant; different designers vary so much therefore it’s all about how the garment makes her feel. Coryn Emma Mother-of-the-bride specialist www.baroqueboutique.co.uk 84
THE COLD NEVER BOTHERED ME ANYWAY
Q – I have an outdoor job, and my skin really suffers in the winter. How can I repair the damages of the cold and wind in time for my summer wedding? When working outside, prevention is key. Your skin should be protected as much as possible, so use SPF50 every day, no matter how dull and grey the weather may be. If possible, layer up your protection with some kind of shielding, such as a scarf, to block out the harsh winds. Stay away from soap and minimise the use of hot water, as the temperature change can make your skin red and sore. Sticking to a skincare routine every morning and night will benefit the hydration and texture of your skin. Use cleansing water and toner, avoid anything with too many chemicals and finish with a nourishing moisturiser afterwards. My favourite is Elemis as they do a wide range of products to suit everyone. The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com

#SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com
