reta and Daniel met online. “We had our first date at a Costa in Cornwall,” says Greta. “Dan picked me up from college where I was studying art. I was covered in paint and plaster so I must have made a good first impression! Since then we haven’t gone a day without talking to each other.” Daniel asked Greta to be his wife on New Year’s Eve in 2015. “He used my great grandmother’s engagement ring which my mum had given him when he asked for her blessing,” shares the bride. ”The proposal didn’t go quite to plan as Dan has originally planned to ask me when the fireworks went off but had to improvise as I wasn’t feeling well and nearly ruined the surprise! He finally asked me at the top of a hill in Minions, Cornwall. It’s a spot where Dan and I would go to watch the sunset, and he’d ring me when I was on my way home from college. He pretended to get a flat tyre and came round to my side of the car and started played Jason Derulo’s Marry Me through the speakers.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

Greta and Daniel said their vows at Caldicot Castle followed by a reception at The Barn at Brynich Images courtesy of Eyes2Me Photography

27 

We love castles and knew we wanted to get married in one. We visited Caldicot Castle and instantly fell in love with it and began imagining the photograph opportunities and how much our families would love exploring the grounds.

For our reception, we chose The Barn at Brynich. We visited the venue by chance and instantly fell in love with it. It was a blank canvas which was important to us as we wanted to add our own personal touches. The on-site cottages also played a big role as our guests were able to stay for the whole weekend and enjoy the surrounding area.

Our theme was inspired by the woods as we both grew up in the countryside and enjoy being outside. 28

I made a couple of woodland sculptures as props, signs from old pieces of wood and confetti from flowers in our garden.

I used artificial hydrangeas, gypsophila, roses and eucalyptus from Artificial Floral Suppliers to create the centerpieces, my bouquet and Dan’s buttonhole.

For our centrepieces, we used lanterns we found on sale in Asda and Aldi paired with dried flowers, candles and hessian table runners.

REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a Needle and Thread beaded dress which I bought for a bargain on eBay. My mum customised it with a corset fitted in the back. I loved my gown and want an occasion to wear it again! I accessorised with my grandmother’s pearl earrings as her middle name is Pearl, and my name also means pearl in German.

We hired a photo booth from Myselfie, which went down well with our guests and ended up with some pretty hilarious pictures. The booth itself came in a box, and you simply plug it in and set it up in five minutes. Once you’re done, send it back, and they upload the images onto a private online gallery.

Dan wore a black dinner suit that was given to us by a family friend and a navy tie from Primark.

Our big-day bake was a replica of Harry and Meghan’s lemon and elderflower wedding cake from Iceland.

After the ceremony, we had a picnic at Caldicot Castle. Both being from Cornwall, we had to have Cornish pasties! At the reception, we opted for woodfired pizzas provided by Dough To Go. They were amazing and made each order in an individual box so our guests could go and help themselves to food when they were ready. Our caterers went above and beyond and met all additional requirements and dietary needs.

My talented brother played the guitar for our guests in the evening.

29 

Despite being absolutely exhausted after a sleepless night, we both couldn’t have been happier. We felt so loved on the day, and having our friends and family together for the first time celebrating in the sunshine was wonderful.

After the service, when we were having our pictures taken, a little boy and his mum came up to us and told me I looked like a princess which absolutely made my day!

We cannot thank all our suppliers enough for going above and beyond to make our day so special. Our photographer, Jim from Eyes2Me Photography, did an amazing job and his journalistic vibe was exactly what we wanted. He captured all our special memories in a way that was so relaxed and non-intrusive that it felt like he was one of the guests.

The ceremony and scenic drive through Brecon to the reception venue stood out to us the most. It was the moment that we realised we were finally married, and all the planning and hard work had paid off!

The night before the wedding we were cooking Cornish Pasties to have after the ceremony when Dan’s brother came and told us that the ones he had been cooking had fallen through the oven shelf. At this point we were both so exhausted we really didn’t care and burst out laughing!

For our honeymoon, we stayed at the Living Room Treehouses in North Wales for three nights. We enjoyed being with each other, no technology, reading our guest book and just relaxing after a crazy few days.

laire and Samuel met while studying music at Cardiff University. “We bonded over our mutual love of musical theatre and folk music,” says Samuel. “I accompanied Claire to a lunchtime concert series, and we became good friends. We quickly fell for each other without even realising it.” Samuel popped the question on New Year’s Eve in front of Claire’s family. “We looked at rings together earlier in December, but Claire didn’t know when the proposal would be,” shares the groom. “It was also a surprise for the rest of our friends and family.”

SETTING THE SCENE “Having the wedding in Cardiff meant we were halfway between my family in Ireland and Sam’s in Southampton and the Isle of Wight,” shares the bride. “It’s a special city as it’s where we spent our formative years. The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is not only a gorgeous venue, but it’s also suited to the type of music we wanted on the day. The wedding team helped two musicians feel at home being married on a stage.” Instead of favours, the couple decided to donate to the Alzheimer’s Society and Muscular Dystrophy Research in memory of Claire and Samuel’s grandfathers. “Our table plan was printed by a local shop in Bath called Digiprint,” adds the bride. “We chose a burgundy watercolour design which we also incorporated into our menus and table numbers.” For their big-day blooms, the couple hired Forbesfield. “We opted for tall dramatic centrepieces surrounded by candles,” says Claire. “The team also provided my bouquet, the buttonholes and arrangements for the registrar table and top table.” Claire and Samuel decided to have a four-tier cake from The Vale Cake Boutique. “We chose a lemon, blueberry, vanilla, salted caramel, red velvet and chocolate orange filling,” explains the bride. “The bottom tier was shaped like a giant’s causeway stone and iced in a marble style. The other three had cream and burgundy icing, mirroring the watermark style on the table plan, menus and place cards. It was topped with a pink isomalt bowl and decorated with flowers by Forbesfield. We also had a cheese tower with crackers, chutney, grapes and foliage that were sourced by my parents and served by the team at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.” The lovebirds chose beautiful decorations. “Sam and I used a gold hexagonal-shaped arch built by Sam’s dad,” says Claire. “We also had blush pink uplighters provided by the venue and a wall projection designed by my bridesmaid, Catherine McCartney.” Claire was transported to the venue in a white Daimler DS420 limousine from Premier Carriage. “For the drinks reception we had winter Pimms, a personalised drink with blackberries and a sprig of rosemary,” shares the bride. “We also offered tea, coffee, mini mince pies and heart-shaped Welsh cakes.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS Claire chose an A-line gown called Freyja. “It had a sweetheart neckline, an embroidered illusion chest and back, sheer sleeves and a super soft tulle skirt,” shares Claire. “I accessorised with celestial hairpins designed and made by a family friend at White Designs, a Swarovski necklace, a silver bangle bracelet, ear cuffs, white point-toed shoes and a simple tulle veil.” Samuel opted for a dark blue tweed suit from Next. “He wore a different patterned tie and buttonhole flower to help him stand 33 

out from the groomsmen,” explains the bride. “I gave him personalised cufflinks, one said our wedding date and the other said ‘priodas hapus’, which is Welsh for ‘happy wedding’.” The bridesmaids chose burgundy dresses from Phase Eight. “The gowns had a low neckline and short sleeves,” adds Claire. “The girls accessorised with blush pink faux fur shawls, small bouquets and hairpins from Claire’s Accessories.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “The ceremony featured a cello quintet of Sam’s past teachers and current pupils, a choir and a pianist,” says Claire. “As classical musicians, this was a highlight of the day for us. All the cello pieces were arranged by Sam and the cellists and choir members met and rehearsed for the first time on the morning of the wedding. The register signing was accompanied by a piece from Northern Irish singer-songwriter, Foy Vance that was arranged for the cello quintet and piano. Possibly the biggest highlight of the day then followed as I was surprised in the form of a flash mob performance of Auld Lang Syne, where nearly every guest played their own instrument or one of the 120 ukuleles Sam and his groomsmen had brought along. The on-stage musicians then closed the ceremony with a special joint cello and voice arrangement of Lauridsen’s setting of O Magnum Mysterium, a long time favourite of ours.” During the drinks reception, Samuel asked one of his students to play the piano as background music. “He played some jazzy Christmas tunes to entertain the guests and accompany the winter-themed drinks,” shares the bride. “The evening band were a big hit with guests. Sam joined in alongside his best man and 10 of our friends playing his own jazz style arrangements of well-known pop tunes. These spanned a wide range of eras, meaning there was something for all our friends and family to dance and sing along to. We received so many compliments about the entertainment after the day, and lots of people said they’ve never seen a dancefloor so busy!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt overwhelmed, loved and gloriously happy on the morning of the wedding,” explains the bride. “I adored the flash mob and somehow didn’t notice the 120 ukuleles being stored in our spare room the week before the wedding!” All of the couples friends and suppliers made their day special. “The best man wrote a song for his speech and our wedding coordinator, Cerys, was a dream to work with,” says Claire. “She was attentive and supportive, and the venue tech team were so friendly and helpful. I realised just before exiting the ceremony that we hadn’t sent the team our exit song, but the moment it crossed my mind, music started playing. They were incredible.”

HONEYMOON “We spent Christmas and New Year’s Eve in New York,” explains Claire. “We stayed in a cosy apartment in Manhattan near lots of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars. We planned everything together and had the most memorable trip of a lifetime.” 35 

Originally we felt deflated about having to cancel our reception, but we’re so glad we decided to go ahead. We had an amazing day with the most important people present. Love is love, and a pandemic won’t change that, and if anything, it made us appreciate everyone even more.

Our photographer, Judith Cooke was amazing, and I’m so lucky to be able to call her my friend. She was the light on what I thought was goin g to be a deflating day. The sun shone, and she worked her magic with the pictures. She truly is a whirlwind of hap piness.

Our daughter, Fallon, looked so happy and kept telling us how much she enjoyed that we all had the same last name.

There were so many people that made our day extra special, including both sets of parents and our suppliers.

We both felt really calm, or so we thought. I didn’t sleep the night before, and the rain was terrible but lucky it brightened up as the day went on.

FLOWERS

www.aureliaallenphotography.com

TOP TIPS ❤ Think about where you’re going to place your flowers as some blooms don’t like to be in and out of water for any length of time and may end up wilting. Discuss your options with your florist carefully before choosing a style. ❤ Establish a good relationship with your chosen supplier. Be honest about your budget, and they’ll be able to advise and guide you with the most suitable choices. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, after all, it’s not every day you get married.

Q – My wife-to-be and I are looking for a florist. What should we take into consideration before booking?

For many of you, finding a florist will be high on your list and one of the first things you want to book. Keep in mind that flowers aren’t just bouquets and buttonholes, they’re quite often the main source of decoration for your big day. If blooms are important to you, book your florist as soon as possible. Ask your venue and photographer if they have any recommendations. They will have worked with lots of suppliers and will likely know who will be suitable for your nuptials. Remember that recommendations are just people’s opinions and everyone has their own style. Ask yourself, do you want just bridal arrangements or venue decorations too? Do they hire vases or do you need to find an event décor company? Are you able to meet them in person? It’s essential that you feel at ease around them. A good florist will only need one picture to bring your vision to life. Do you have a set look for your flowers? Some suppliers will specialise in certain styles. Look for inspiration via social media, wedding magazines and local photographers’ pictures. It can be hard to work out a budget without knowing the cost of your arrangements. Have a look on websites to see if you can find a rough price guide. Don’t be afraid to ask for the world, but be prepared to scale back! Blooms aren’t cheap, but they can certainly give you the wow factor. A talented supplier will be able to help you create what’s important to you. Samara Forsyth Searle Florist www.bestbudsbysamara.co.uk 45 

Q – We’re getting married on Valentine’s Day and want showstopping flowers. Do you have any suggestions?

TOP TIPS ❤ Textured blooms will add interest to your bouquet and décor. Look for options such as pampas grass, viburnum berries and eucalyptus. ❤ Tall centrepieces are more visible than lower versions and will add a softer tone to the space. ❤ Roses make a bold statement. Dyed versions are available in unusual hues such as blue and black. ❤ Small accents of colour can be added throughout your design to add interest. ❤ Ivory, white and green is a timeless combination. Reduce the cost of your centrepieces by having lots of greenery and a few statement blooms. ❤ Flowers can be used in your hair, jewellery and veil. Ask your hairstylist if they have any quirky ideas and look on social media for inspiration. ❤ It’s important your big-day blooms look amazing but remember to consider the fragrance. There are lots of herbs available that can be incorporated into your design to add interest and smell. 46

In my opinion, there’s nothing more romantic than getting married on Valentine’s Day. You’ll remember the day for years to come and have a special day to celebrate your anniversary. A simplistic red bouquet will stand out against your wedding dress. For your table centrepieces and floral arches, use a combination of lighter colour palettes. A red rose round bouquet can be bold on its own. Add diamond pins or pearls in the centre of the flowers to create a glamorous look. If you’re considering an artificial bouquet, this style will look high quality and elegant, regardless of your budget. Pink and red are the most popular colour combination for Valentine’s Day. Combine red with dark, hot or light pink and add lots of foliage and gypsophila to create a classic design. This will look fabulous against a pale pink, blush, champagne or even a statement black wedding dress. If you’ve chosen a coloured gown, then your bouquet should complement and accentuate your chosen look. A chic and beautiful fresh tulip bouquet is perfect for early spring nuptials. To create a dreamy look, opt for feminine blooms in ivory, light pink, peach and purple. Finish with pretty lace and ribbon arranged in an unstructured or cascading style. Q – We want to incorporate our love of spring into our venue’s décor. Do you have any ideas?

www.nickmurrayphotography.co.uk

TOP TIPS ❤ Incorporate blooms from your bouquet throughout the rest of your décor to create a coherent look. For a wow-factor, hang statement pieces from the ceilings, walls and bannisters. ❤ Use different flowers for your centrepieces and bouquet but in the same colours. Mixing lower-cost options with more expensive versions like orchids can help reduce the overall price. ❤ Look at wedding magazines, Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. Creating a moodboard will help your florist get an idea of the colours and styles you like. ❤ Flower crowns are a great way of incorporating your chosen colour scheme. ❤ Dried versions, lavender and wheat are perfect for adding special touches to the groomsmen’s outfits. ❤ If you’re having a seasonal wedding, discuss with your supplier what options are available. Remember choosing flowers that are out of season may be difficult to source and expensive. Those of you having a winter wedding should consider using hydrangeas as the cooler temperatures will keep them looking fresh throughout the day. ❤ Bring a romantic and cosy atmosphere to your big day with candles, foliage, branches, pine cones and florals.

Every season has a different feel often reflecting the natural environment in which your wedding is taking place. I find couples will almost always choose the season that suits them because they like what the time of year has to offer. For me, spring is all about pastels and bright, light hues. Pastels are set to become a big trend for 2021 and the darker, bolder shades we saw so much of in the last few years are becoming muted, and a paler palette is taking over. Why not opt for pastel linen so that your colours will pop? My favourite prop is magnolia branches. Set into an arch behind the top table, it will complement a doorway or soften the corners of a marquee. Beth Stretton Venue stylist www.meganandclaude.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES

Our experts solve your problems

ONE FINE DAY

Q – We’re thinking of hiring a celebrant for our upcoming wedding. What should we take into consideration before booking? Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and deciding on a type of ceremony is an essential part of this. A celebrant led service will give you lots of freedom, and most suppliers will be delighted to accommodate your wishes and preferences. Consider the following: ❤ Make sure they have availability on your chosen date and are willing to travel to your venue. ❤ Always meet your celebrant face-to-face to make sure that you connect with them and feel confident that they understand your style and approach. ❤ Ask how many ceremonies they conduct in one day. Most commit to only one service a day, guaranteeing you their full attention. If not, be sure to agree on extended timing to avoid feeling rushed. ❤ Check if they’re happy to have your friends and family involved in the service. ❤ Ask if they offer any additional services and if you want something bespoke, see if they can help. ❤ Be clear about any parts of the ceremony that you want to write yourself and mention if you need help doing so. ❤ Find out what’s included in the price and what costs extra. ❤ Make sure that you have the final sign off on the ceremony plan. ❤ Ask if they’ve been trained or are professionally qualified. ❤ Ensure they provide you with a contract that includes details of what’s included, along with costs and any cancellation arrangements. CAKE EXPECTATIONS

Q – We’re having a boho-inspired wedding and would love to incorporate elements of our theme into our cake. Do you have any ideas? The first type of bake that comes to mind when thinking of a relaxed boho theme is a buttercream coated cake. Semi-naked and rough-iced buttercream cakes look casual and would suit your theme perfectly. Opt for a creation that’s stacked high and covered in flowers. Roses, berries, cornflowers and chrysanthemums will make a big impact. Your chosen supplier will ensure that the blooms are safe enough to come into direct contact with food. Pressed dried flowers arranged around the cake and dried arrangements are new trends that are quickly becoming popular. Other ways to incorporate your theme is to take details from your dress and have them recreated in sugar. Fringing and/or embroidery can be used to create a bespoke design. Q – What quirky menu options do you suggest?

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Q – Do you have any ideas of how we can incorporate Valentine’s Day into our stationery? You design will depend on the overall style and aesthetic of your wedding. Here are some ideas to you get started: ❤ If your day will be overflowing with roses and littered with heart confetti, then opt for a stationery suite complete with luxury envelope liners, illustrated with extravagant watercoloured roses and deep red envelopes. Finish off with a glamorous gold monogram of your initials. ❤ Alternatively, if you’re after something quirky, then why not go for pastel-coloured invitations? Each dainty card can be laser cut into the shape of a heart, paired with a soft san serif typeface that resembles the iconic Love Hearts sweets. ❤ Sometimes less is more. Take things back to basics with a crisp ivory card stock and elegant typography. When the design is this minimal, you should pay extra attention to the wording. I would include a poem or try writing your own. The personal touches is what makes it extra special. ❤ The possibilities are endless, so now is the time to get pinning on your moodboard. The more inspiration you can gather, the better! With the help of a stationer, you’ll be able to create the perfect stationery suite. Amy Jones Wedding stationer www.jonesandjoy.co.uk

We get asked this question a lot. www.pavlovaandcream.com For a more casual style, how about picnic baskets on each table, filled with all your favourite savoury and sweet treats? Alternatively, you could ask your caterer to put sharing boards of meats, cheeses, savoury nibbles and salads down long tables so your guests can help themselves to the feast in front of them. If you’re looking for casual but hot food, how about designing a bespoke gourmet burger with your caterer? We’ve had several weddings ask to do this, and it’s a lot of fun at tasting sessions providing different burgers and assorted fillings. For something formal but a little different, why not consider venison or duck rather than the conventional chicken, lamb or beef? If that isn’t to your taste, use heritage style vegetables like purple carrots, candy-striped beetroot or tomato varieties to add a talking point to your dish. Lesley Long Caterer www.freshfoodevents.co.uk

NOW THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT Q – My wife-to-be and I are looking for some fun entertainment for our reception next year. What’s popular right now in the world of weddings and will appeal to all our guests?

We have an interesting situation at the moment and don’t know if 2021 weddings will be permitted to have the traditional numbers and fun practices that we had pre-pandemic. Don’t worry, there are still ways to have a good time even with smaller numbers. This is where technology comes in! We can utilise it so even when the pandemic is a thing of the past, aged grandparents who are too frail to travel will still be able to be involved with your big day. A selfie wizard allows people both in the room and at home to upload pictures of themselves and send text messages. People can use it to share a memory of you as a couple or answer questions. What’s more, you’ll get to keep all the images on a memory stick which can double up as a guest book. Many of you will have used Zoom for work meetings or socially, but how about using it to broadcast your wedding to those who are unable to attend? Hire a supplier who can manage this for you with quality sound and vision equipment. Your loved ones won’t need to do anything other than connect to the link provided. The beauty of this is you can have a copy of the broadcast saved too! You can extend the fun by having quizzes with your remote guests or remote dancing to some memorable or significant music. Your aged relatives could even do a speech. Don’t write off your options with micro weddings. It’s still possible to be inclusive even with restrictions. Fall in love with these gorgeous images at the Clyne Farm Centre

T

Images courtesy of Kate Richards Photography

o find out more about this set of images, we spoke to local photographer, Kate Richards. She tells us: “I started chatting to Kirsten from Queen of the Meadow about organising a photo shoot. I suggested a choice of themes, and she decided to go with autumn as it’s a beautiful time of year and she only uses seasonal flowers. All the blooms and foliage used in the shoot were locally sourced. The foliage was from Clyne Farm Centre’s ancient woodland, and the flowers were grown by Blue Hill Flora.” Lumi Event Design was tasked with creating the table design. “She was inspired by her surroundings,” explains Kate. “Lisa and Tor wanted to use rustic, earthy elements utilising the venue’s existing furniture, with natural materials for the place settings. To add softness and colour, they chose neutral fabrics with touches of gold to bring all the details to life.”

The impressive cakes were made by Piece of Cake Wales. “Rowanne wanted designs that were understated and elegant using soft lines and subtle textures whilst fitting in beautifully with the natural environment,” adds Kate. “On the first design, a tier separator was used to create an illusion and add height. Soft ruffles with delicate guilting encase the tiers adding gentle texture to a sleek design. The second creation featured a hand-painted stone effect with impressive sweeping ruffles.” The complete the look, Dwynwen by Ryan Thomas provided the stationery. “Ryan aimed to stay true to my simplicity and tone of voice but carefully blend it with an earthy and relaxed finish,” says Kate. “He used hand-torn detailing to create texture, opulent and tactile velvet ribbons and a touch of metallic gold to add a hint of luxury and glamour.”

Plus, She’s a Lady is a super-feminine girly pink, lovely for a rosy bride look. Incredible value for money, it’s a great staple for your make-up bag. Why not try all the colours?” – Kelly Andrews

“This handbag must-have goes on like a dream and certainly lived up to its name. The wonderfully lush creamy formula glides on smoothly and stays on without flaking, making me feel fabulous all day! It left my lips feeling soft and smooth too – win, win!” – Sarah Reeve

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long-Wear Lipstick, www.toofaced.co.uk, £20

“After using a tint for the first time I’m a convert! This colour was divine, and what I like is that you can layer it up and build the tone to your desired effect; soft subtle pink by day and a deep red by night. It lasted all day after drinking and eating, and even stayed on when I applied a balm over the top. A must-have for your make-up bag.” – Danielle Harvey

“Straight away, I loved the sturdy packaging and precise applicator. The lightweight formula has fantastic pigmentation and the product has a matte finish. There’s no cracking or bleeding because of the avocado oil, vitamin E, and hyaluronic filling spheres, which I’m very thankful for as there’s nothing I hate more than dry lips! The beautiful shade lasted hours on my lips and I got compliments all day when I wore it!” – Olivia Gibson

TRIED AND TESTED Kevyn Aucoin Unforgettable Lip Definer (£18), with Unforgettable Lipstick (£24), www.spacenk.com

MU LAC Velvet Ink, www.mulaccosmetics.com, £13.34

“The Lip Definer was easy to use, and I loved the way it looked. I put it on first thing, and by the time I went to bed it was still firmly in place, looking fabulous, even though I’d been in the rain most of the day. I had fun playing with the dual-ended pencil and brush creating a look that suited me and paired it with Unforgettable Lipstick in Legendary, but as it’s a natural shade it would work well with most colours.” – Melissa Barker

SHADE: UNDRESSED WITH LEGENDARY

“Historically, matte lipsticks have been my worst enemy – being a notorious lip-biter they show up all my flaws. But it’s safe to say that this product has changed my mindset. The finish, although definitely matte, is somehow silky and smooth. The best thing about this particular shade is that it’s bold enough to look like you’ve made an effort without being OTT – the perfect lazy-girl hack! It also has incredible staying power, but that does mean you need to be careful to apply correctly the first time as it doesn’t budge!” – Beth Morton

SHADE: NICE TO MEET YA

Illamasqua Beyond Lipstick, www.illamasqua.com, £20 “Upon application you could definitely tell this was a luxe cream lipstick as it has a balm consistency and left my lips feeling nourished with a noticeable shimmer. Plus, I didn’t have the typical drying of the lips, which I find some products cause. This lipstick is one to keep on you and reapply throughout the day for longevity.” – Danielle Harvey

FROM DUSK UNTIL DAWN

Q – I’m getting married quite early in the day and am worried that my make-up won’t stay in place until the evening. Do you have any ideas to ensure I look fabulous all day? This is a common question that I often get asked by brides. Ensuring your make-up looks perfect all day depends on whether your trial was successful. Book a trial before the big day, even if it means losing money, it will all be worth it when you find the perfect artist. Book your trial at least three months before your wedding and remember a consultation is a must! Maya Jasinska Hair and make-up artist www.loxushairandmakeup.com

Q&A

A SMOOTH COMPLEXION Q – My skin is very oily, so I generally avoid wearing make-up, but I want to look amazing on my big day. Do you have any product suggestions or looks I should go for?

This is actually a very common problem and doesn’t mean you need to avoid wearing make-up. On oily skin I use Illamasqua Matte Veil Primer, an amazing non-silicon based primer. It creates a lovely base for your foundation without making your skin slippery. I also go for MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Foundation. Not many people are aware of this product, it’s great if you expect to cry or sweat on the day and it’s buildable so you can wear it sheer or heavy. I then use a cotton pad to press fixing powder into the oiliest areas. I like to use Federico Mahora Fixing Powder, it’s not expensive, bright white or yellow and works like a dream. Lastly, I use a fixing spray. Take a pad and some powder with you to touch up the oily areas throughout the day or oil blotting paper. Emma R. Locke Make-up artist www.makeuplocker.com

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

A COMPLETE TRANSFORMATION

Q – I want to create two different looks for my upcoming wedding and wondered if you had any suggestions of how I can transform my dress for the evening reception? Creating two different looks for your wedding day is a popular trend at the moment. To do this, you could go for a completely different dress for your evening reception. Look for a design that’s sleek, simple, easy to move and dance around in and a complete contrast to your ceremony look. Alternatively, find a design that has a detachable lace bolero or cape that can be worn for the ceremony and removed for the evening celebration. This option is very popular for ladies who want to keep their arms and shoulders covered for a church service. Find a dress that has a detachable train or overskirt. This option is my absolute favourite as you get two dresses in one! When the train or overskirt is attached the gown looks like an A-line or ballgown then once it’s removed it will reveal a slimmer fitted gown, which is easier to move around in.

Sleeps 4, 3 nights from £538 travelling January 2021.

Garsons Cottage is a one-bedroom Cotswold stone cottage with oak beams and oak flooring offering a cosy, relaxing retreat. With exposed Cotswold stone walls and a wood burning stove, the property has been expertly refurbished to the highest standard. Set in the delightful village of Idbury, near Stow-on-the-Wold with views across the Windrush Valley, footpaths can be found in all directions from the front door for a romantic stroll. The quintessential villages of Burford, Chipping Norton and Bourtonon-the-Water are all within a four-mile radius. There you’ll find famous cheese shops, delis, bakeries, restaurants, tea and antique shops – Daylesford Organic Farm Shop is well worth a visit! You are spoilt for choice with many award-winning gastro pubs nearby, offering local ales and superb food – the Feathered Nest has cosy log fires and stunning views across the Evenlode Valley. The Plough and Wild Rabbit, both with Michelin Stars, are in nearby Kingham. The Kings Head pub is an all-time favourite and a short walk down the hill on the village green in Bledington. Other local towns to visit are Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Campden and Broadway if you wanted to venture a few miles further. Sleeps 2, 3 nights from £429 travelling January 2021.
