hen my wedding photographer asked me what moments I’d love to capture on our big day, I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed. There’s so much about weddings that I adore that it’s hard to break down and put into a list. To help, I took inspiration from all the lovely real weddings I’ve seen over the years and my favourite moments, such as the vows and seeing your partner for the first time. After such a strange year for all of us, it’s nice to finally think about something positive and talk to wonderful suppliers who, like us, are happy that nuptials are getting back to normal. I’m so excited for the flurry of weddings and to see all your pictures and share the happy moments with you all. To celebrate, we’ve put together a showstopping issue that’s full of inspiration. We have three real weddings, three styled shoots, the latest styling trends and a must-see planning guide. What’s more, our fashion section is full of fabulous fairytaleinspired dresses. If you’d like to be featured, get in touch via our website – www.yoursouthwales.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or email me at melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

The British Bird of Prey Centre in Llanarthney has helped couples during the pandemic, including one client who required evening entertainment. The director, Emma Hill, tells us more: “Last month we received an email from a young couple who, due to COVID-19, had to cancel all their wedding entertainment and were asking if we could do something for them. We don’t normally do evening entertainment and stick to just afternoons, but we decided to do our good deed! It was a beautiful sunny evening, and The Coach House in Neath was lovely. We flew a falcon, hawk and owl and all the guests had a chance to have a go and even meet a baby owl.” The company offer fun-packed packages, including the morning of the wedding where the groom can take an exciting hawk walk, an owl can fly down the aisle to bring you your wedding rings, and birds of prey can provide the ultimate entertainment for the wedding reception. Sara and Ollie said their vows at their dream wedding venue, Usk Castle Images courtesy of Megan-Sian Photography

O

llie was living with his parents, near my nan’s farm,” says Sara. “We had never met as we went to different schools, and Ollie initially thought that I was older, so never took the opportunity to approach me, but in his own words, it was love at first sight.” Ollie tells us all about his proposal plans. “I took my parents to the spot where Sara and I often stopped while walking the dogs,” shares Ollie. “We met harpist Kathryn Anne Rees at the clearing and hung ribbon from the branches, littered the floor with rose petals and set up a picnic blanket complete with champagne, chocolate and strawberries. Sara was completely oblivious! For all she knew, we were just walking the dogs, but as we got closer, she could hear the harp. She looked at me puzzled, and as we walked a little further, we could see the decorations and Kathryn playing. Sara took my hand and pulled me back and said ‘babe she must be making a music video’ and I said ‘no this is for you.’ It was perfect! I could barely get my words out, and neither could she. We were so happy sitting on the blanket in the dappled sunshine listening to Kathryn. It was magical and more than I ever wished or dreamed it could be.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

23

The Flower Shed did an amazing job with the bouquets and all the arrangements. Our shed looked stunning, and everybody loved the flowers.

We had wanted to move to Usk for a while, and the day after our engagement, we visited and wandered up to Usk Castle. It’s a hidden gem and has such a magical feel. We met Rosie, and told her we’d just got engaged, so she took us into the private gardens and showed us the wedding brochure. We couldn’t believe that you could get married there, we love castles and have been all over Wales visiting them. It also turned out that we moved right around the corner, so when our initial plans fell through due to COVID-19, our quests wandered back to ours for a socially distanced reception.

The cake was made by my good friend Emily from Dennison Bakes. It was huge and tasted superb! We decorated it with figurines and blooms from The Flower Shed.

For the centrepieces, we chose wooden tree slices, jars, pine cones and tea lights.

Our love for animals was forced upon our guests as we opted for a vegan caterer. Vegan To You were fantastic and helped provide different options due to the COVID-19 restrictions. The food was so fresh and packed full of flavour. They tailored the menu to suit our guests and then left us with a cold buffet for the evening. There wasn’t any left to waste. 24

Ollie and I hired furniture from Valley Furniture Hire. We ordered rustic love letters, which looked amazing at the top of our garden, and big barrels for us to decorate along with catering tables, benches and rattan furniture.

REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a Paul Zeni gown called Demi from Bridal Lane. It was a delicate, fitted dress with lace detailing. I absolutely adored my dress, it fitted me perfectly on the day and was a pleasure to wear.

My bridesmaids wore pale pink dresses, which we got from Bridal Lane. The detail on the back of the gowns was simply beautiful.

Our humanist celebrant, Barbara Natasegara, helped construct a completely personalised ceremony and suggested we have a moment of reflection during the ceremony. We asked our harpist, Kathryn Anne Rees, to play for two minutes, and Barbara invited our guests to leave us well wishes on little wooden love hearts which we placed on a hay bale. Some of the messages were really heartfelt, and others were hilarious, rude and cheeky. The love hearts are now hung on a wish tree in our house.

Ollie chose a Reiss dinner suit with a Hugo Boss dicky bow and cummerbund.

On the morning of the wedding, we were both excited but very emotional. When we saw each other at the gate where we said our vows, our dog, Bob, got up out of the shade to greet me, which brought tears to mine and my father’s eyes.

The band and DJ were cancelled due to the restrictions, but we asked the caricaturist, Mark Bowen, to come, and we are so glad he did. He was phenomenal and such a great guy. He had a huge round of applause from our guests on his departure, and he couldn’t do enough for us. 25

We were lucky enough to have Ollie’s grandparents there. Don is 91, and he surprised us with a really emotional speech that touched everyone’s hearts. It was completely unexpected.

There was no chance of us getting away with everything booked up, so we spent nearly four days of our week after the wedding cleaning the house and dismantling the marquee. It was totally worth it!

Our pup, Valda, was so well behaved. She was an absolute dream during the ceremony. Our dogs are our lives, and we couldn’t have done it without them. Of course, the weather was on our side, so that was amazing, but what stood out was looking at our guests and seeing the faces of loved ones, many of whom we haven’t seen in over a year due to lockdown.

ess and Jamie met like most modern couples, online. “We both swiped right on Tinder more than six years ago,” says Jess. “We talked for a few months before deciding to meet in Swansea, which was halfway between where we both lived. We instantly clicked and ended up taking for hours while we walked the length of Swansea marina and bay.” Jamie popped the question on New Year’s Day in 2019. “He had asked for my mother’s blessing the summer before and had managed to keep it secret for a while,” shares the bride. “It nearly wasn’t a surprise as Jamie accidentally messaged my family group chat that morning to say he was about to propose! Luckily I didn’t see the message, so he quickly deleted it after my mum pointed out that I was in the group chat. He dressed up in a tux and covered it with a trench coat, so I wouldn’t notice, and we went for a walk to Porthcawl Common. We sat on the beach, and he asked me to take a photo of him and our dog, Odin. He walked to the cliff’s edge and put a white collar and bow tie on Odin to match his tux, then took his coat off and walked towards me. Much to my surprise, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We had initially booked our wedding for 20th March, 2020, at a different venue, but as were in the early stages of the pandemic, like many others, we unfortunately needed to postpone just four days before the wedding was due to take place,” recalls Jess. “We set another date for August 2020, however, we needed to postpone for a second time due to restrictions. It was difficult finding a date for 2021 as the backlog of weddings meant most dates were already taken, so the only option available was 30th April, 2021. At the end of the year, we were unfortunately told we would be unable to have our reception in our initial venue as there were plans to transform it into a COVID-19 vaccination centre. By the new year, we didn’t think we would be able to have a reception anyway due to the restrictions, so we continued to plan our ceremony at St. Mary Magdalene Church. One week before the wedding, the restrictions were lifted, and we did some very last-minute reception planning. Court Colman Manor was the first venue we called because it’s beautiful and local to us. They couldn’t have been more accommodating or understanding of our situation, and we can’t thank them enough. Alpine Marquees were also fantastic and helped us pull together our reception at the last minute.” The couple hired their family friend Jan from Jan Lima Flowers to do the flowers. “She did an amazing job with the bouquets and decorating the church and marquee,” adds the bride. “The blooms matched our colour scheme perfectly, and we particularly loved the floral arch outside the church.” “Our cake was from Centre Stage Cakes and was a work of art,” explains Jess. “It was decorated with flowers that matched Jan’s floral arrangements, and nobody could believe they were made of icing!” For their favours, Jess and Jamie gave their guests homemade Welshcakes and travel-sized hand sanitisers that were personalised with stickers from Vistaprint and Zazzle. The couple decided to use their BMW Z3 Convertible on the day. “Jamie drove from the church to the venue,” says the bride. “We personalised it with a ribbon on the front and a ‘just married’ number plate on the back.” 29

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “After a lot of shopping around with my mum, we eventually bought my wedding dress from the lovely High Society Bridal Boutique,” shares Jess. “I ended up choosing a completely different style than I had originally envisaged by the designer Jesus Peiro. I loved the simplicity of the design, and I accessorised it with a floral veil from Pleser.” Jamie and the groomsmen wore suits from Dyfed Menswear. “They all matched except for the waistcoat and tie,” adds the bride. “Our dog and ring bearer, Odin, also had a matching bow tie.” “The bridesmaids chose full-length dresses from TFNC London which had a wrap front in a pale lavender colour,” recalls Jess. “Lorraine Stone Truly Scrumptious did the alterations and made matching face masks and shawls out of the leftover material. She also designed and made my mother’s beautiful dress.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “During the ceremony, we had Bethan Welsh Harpist play a variety of pieces which we chose from her varied repertoire,” explains Jess. “We would highly recommend Bethan to anyone looking for a harpist to play at their wedding!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt nervous but happy that we were finally able to have the day we had been waiting for,” says the bride. “We were very lucky with the weather as rain was forecast, but it was sunny all day!” Jamie found himself in a tricky situation on the morning of the wedding. “He had a reaction to an insect bite the day before and woke up with a very swollen foot,” shares Jess. “He sent me a photo saying he was struggling to get his shoe on! Luckily the antibiotics worked their magic, and he eventually managed to get his shoe on, although he had to wear flip flops for the rest of the day after all the photos were taken.” “We’d like to thank everybody that made our day special,” Jess adds. “The church and all our suppliers were so patient with us while we tried to rearrange so many times. We can’t thank Court Colman Manor and Alpine Marquees enough for putting together an amazing reception at such last minute. Our friends and family, including those who couldn’t be there with us on the day, were so supportive, especially our friend and flowerguy who entertained everyone on the day and brought lots of laughter.”

HONEYMOON “We were lucky enough to spend our honeymoon in a cottage in St. Ives, Cornwall,” explains the bride. “It was lovely to get away after a busy few weeks and relax in such a beautiful part of the UK.” 31

I had spent most of the day with my friends watching the royal wedding with absolutely no idea that he was planning to pop the question that evening. PLANNING SOS

READY, SET, Our guide to creating the perfect wedding

A

BOOKING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER From the outset, it’s important to build a relationship with your photographer. Consultations and an engagement or pre-wedding shoot will help build trust between you. Find a supplier that’s on your wavelength, puts you at ease and understands what you want from your images. Good wedding photographers will want to give you precious pictures that you will treasure for a lifetime and will do their best to help you enjoy the day as, after all, it’s all about you. Keep in mind, if they’re a member of a trade association, that’s usually a good indication that they take their work seriously.

www.anthonycrothers.com

How to find the perfect style for you? A good starting point would be to look at the photographer’s portfolio. If you like what you see, then arrange a free no-obligation consultation. It’s important to choose a supplier that won’t impose their style on you. Good companies will listen and produce quality images to suit your preferences. That said, he/she should be experienced enough to make suggestions to suit your needs, make you feel comfortable and supply great images. How long before the wedding day should you get in touch? Most wedding photographers fill their diaries well in advance, so I would say at least 12 months ahead of the big day, and if possible, maybe 18 months to two years before. However, if you’re working on a tighter time scale, it’s always worth asking if your preferred supplier is available on your date. Staying within your budget. This should be fairly straightforward! Do some research and start with a budget in mind. On average, the price of your photographer should be around 15 per cent of the overall cost of the wedding. It’s worth remembering that most decent wedding photographers will over-deliver anyway.

group shots. You have to remember that wedding photographs are lifetime memories and a record of your special day. I’m not exactly a fashion guru, I, therefore, consulted my good friend and collaborative associate Sarah Meyrick (www.facebook.com/ sarahmeyrickhairbeauty) on the latest trends. Sarah reliably informs me that current trends include pastel tones, blues and pinks, warm, earthy tones and Bridgerton vibes. Anthony Crothers | Photographer www.anthonycrothers.com

What are the latest trends? In recent years, I’ve noticed more candid and documentary preferences. However, I do think it’s important to capture at least some portrait and

lthough planning a wedding is a fun experience, it can also be very stressful. There’s so much you need to take into consideration, from budgets and themes to trying to please everyone. To help, we’ve asked local suppliers for some of their top tips.

CHOOSING YOUR ENTERTAINMENT Music is key to generating a great atmosphere for your party. Customising the songs to suit everyone’s tastes is important, so look at the age range attending and consider what would please everyone. A band will usually play for one to three hours, so there will be time between sets when your friends and family may still want to be entertained. Therefore, having a DJ is a good idea, given most weddings last five or more hours. Alternatively, a DJ can entertain you for the whole evening and play a wide range of music. If you’re using the same room for the afternoon and evening, you may want to hire your DJ for the whole day to help everything run smoothly.

♥ Meet them in person or have a virtual meeting. ♥ Ensure they have PAT tested equipment and Public Liability Insurance. This is a safety practice, and most venues will insist on it. ♥ See what your suppliers can provide. Some DJs don’t have bright lighting, for instance. ♥ Check what additional services you need that the DJ can provide. For example, if you hire a marquee and a PA system for your speeches, then you may have a smaller budget left for your entertainment. However, if you book a DJ with lighting and a PA, then it may work out cheaper than doing it separately. Make sure you talk to your supplier before the day to discuss your options.

How do I find a suitable supplier? ♥ Check reviews from past events and clients.

HOW TO CHOOSE A CELEBRANT Choosing a celebrant to officiate at your wedding blessing, renewal of vows, or any other commitment ceremony will not disappoint you. Celebrants have the luxury of being able to conduct bespoke ceremonies wherever and whenever they like. We are an awardwinning company here in Wales that help couples from all walks of life to achieve their dream day their way. Here are some of my top tips for finding the perfect celebrant: ♥ Are they trained, and if so, who was their training provider? You can ask for proof of a diploma from the NOCN, which is the only nationally recognised qualification. ♥ Is your celebrant associated with the Association of Independent Celebrants (AOIC)? This association regulates, monitors and encourages celebrants to continue with the CPD training. ♥ Is your supplier insured? All celebrants should have not only public liability insurance of over five million but also public indemnity of five million. ♥ Does your venue know your chosen celebrant, or could they recommend one they have worked with before that does a good job? ♥ Do they have a website, where you can view feedback from other clients? ♥ Always meet and speak with a celebrant free of charge before you book their service. Once you have chosen someone who you feel fits the bill, make sure there is a contract in place between you. A good celebrant will never ask you for more than a booking fee upfront. Here at Mountain Celebrations, we only invoice for the ceremony 28 days before the actual date. ♥ After you’ve booked, make sure that they have sent you a full draft of the ceremony, this way should the unthinkable happen, you have a full copy of what was going to be said, and a friend or a member of 42

staff from the venue can step in. ♥ The beauty of using a celebrant is they can officiate your ceremony at any venue, licenced or not, so go bold and chose something outside in this beautiful country of ours. Alternatively, have a second venue that you can use, such as someone’s garden, park, beach, or any indoor venue such as hotels, restaurants, or even a public house. ♥ Any good celebrant will have your vows printed out on a separate sheet to hand to you should you forget your words on the day. PLANNING SOS

www.kateizakphotography.com

www.scoularfish.com www.kateizakphotography.com

FINDING THE PERFECT HAIR STYLIST You have managed to put together a plan – congratulations, the hardest part is done! You want to look beautiful and feel special on your big day, which can easily be achieved with the assistance of a professional. First, decide on your budget. Set your minimum and your maximum. At this stage, it does not matter the exact numbers of people in your party, but it’s good to know what your limits are. This next step is very important. There are hundreds of suppliers who offer hair styling and having to contact them all for prices is almost impossible and can be tiring, so don’t try to contact them one by one. Instead, view their gallery first, and if you like what you see, then enquire. They should be able to send you packages to choose from. If they don’t, or something is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Once you’ve booked, you can send them your favourite looks and together you should be able to find the right hairstyle for your trial. For the trial, try to choose a maximum of two looks if you feel indecisive. This can be hair all up or hair half up and half down. The best time to arrange a trial is between nine and six months before the wedding. This is when most of the other important things are already in place, like the dress, theme, colour scheme, venue, flowers etc. Let’s not forget about hair accessories. The trial is the perfect time to bring or discuss your accessories, whether this is a head crown, a tiara, fresh flowers, a hair vine or jewelled pins. Once you have your hairstyle chosen, you will feel more confident and assured on the day of your wedding. Maya Jasinska | Hair and make-up artist www.loxushairandmakeup.com

OUR TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE PERFECT CAKE Do some research before setting a budget as some embellishments and flavours will cost more than others. Once you’ve found a supplier, work with them to create a bespoke design for your big day. Tell them about your likes and dislikes and show them photos of other creations that have caught your attention. Remember, a bespoke option will cost more than a standard design, so factor this into your budget. Here are some of our top tips. ♥ Flowers are a wonderful way of decorating your bake. Blooms can be carefully painted to look like a watercolour masterpiece, made using sugar or even sculpted out of icing. ♥ Chocolate can be used to decorate your bake. Whether you choose a modern drip effect or a quirky half-and-half creation, your guests are sure to be delighted. ♥ If you’ve decided against a traditional white bake, then ruffles are a fun alternative. Not only will it make the cake stand out, but it’s also a great way of incorporating your colour scheme. ♥ Cake freezes perfectly, so if you have any leftover and it wasn’t frozen previously (check with your supplier), freeze it and enjoy it for months to come. You could even keep some for your first anniversary. ♥ Cake-toppers are an opportunity for you and your partner to show off your personalities – have some fun with it, and don’t be afraid to go against tradition!

EXPERT ADVICE

TOPIC Wedding worries Our experts solve your problems

FASHION GODDESS What dress designers and styles are popular right now? This varies significantly as every bride is different, however as social media is such a huge part of our business now, we have noticed a vast interest in the ever-evolving Eva Lendel. Our interpretation of an Eva Lendel bride is confident, trendsetting and unapologetic. Each dress is contemporary and breathtaking. One of the most talked-about gowns from this designer is called Jess. It epitomises the less is more bridal look which is a trend that will never go out of date. The off-the-shoulder style exudes sensual appeal without being overstated. Justin Alexander is another one of our favourite designers that embodies attainable luxury. Justin’s classic styles are timeless and fully inclusive to all brides. A standout option for us in this collection is Addison, a Chantilly lace ballgown that we stock in pink champagne. We’re finding more brides are opting for soft, subtle colours rather than a traditional all ivory dress. There’s a gown for everyone, and we at High Society ask every bride to shop with an open mind, so we will help you find something perfect for your body shape, personality and to ultimately make you feel incredible! Natalie Pemberton and Sue Guy | Wedding dress experts www.highsocietybridalboutique.com

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY We’re thinking of booking a DJ for our wedding, but there are so many to choose from. How can we find the perfect supplier? As an experienced DJ of 30 years, I recommend you look for a dedicated supplier who can cater for the whole family with a wide range of music that’s suitable for all ages. When I look back, I realise how shockingly inexperienced I was at the beginning of my career and always thought music had to be blasting with all the latest club hits – how wrong was I? Now it’s all about subtle tunes and lighting and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that people will want to stay in and enjoy together. ♥ Before booking, remember experience is essential! ♥ Check their reviews are dated and up-to-date. ♥ Book a dedicated wedding DJ. ♥ Look for someone who can work from a playlist if required. Alan Matthews | DJ www.cardiffweddingdisco.co.uk 45

JUST LIKE MAGIC

Chat with the magician and ask about their experience and available options. A large percentage will perform close up magic, so you may need to shop around for different options. Ask if they have worked at your venue and, if so, what works well there. Price is often the biggest question. Some start as low as £100, and others range up to £1,000. It may be hard to understand why there is such a difference, but the answer is that a magician can do more than just tricks, with added value, experience and availability, the price is generally higher. A full-time entertainer generally charges more as it’s their sole income and have the expenses of running a business. Ultimately, only pay what you’re comfortable with and remember extras will cost more. Bryan Gunton | Event magician www.bryangunton.co.uk

My wife-to-be and I are thinking of hiring a magician for our big day. What should we ask before booking?

MOMENTS THAT MATTER SNAP HAPPY

What are your top tips for choosing the perfect celebrant?

How long before the wedding should we book our photographer and is it worth organising a pre-wedding shoot with them?

www.paul-daviesphotography.co.uk

Before the pandemic, most couples would book their photographer around a year before the wedding, but this has all changed over the past year. I’m currently getting bookings for 2023 and 2024 as I think couples are finding it hard to get a date for 2022 due to the knock-on effect of weddings being postponed over the last 16 months. Nearly all of my availability for the popular dates in spring, summer and autumn particularly during school holidays in 2022 were booked up months ago. To get your first or second choice photographer, you will need to book early! It’s a good idea to book a pre-wedding or engagement photo shoot with your chosen photographer if either or both of you are not very confident in front of the camera. This will give you an idea of what to expect on your wedding day, so hopefully, you will feel a bit more relaxed when it comes to your portraits. Paul Davies | Photographer www.paul-daviesphotography.co.uk

A celebrant offers additional choices for those of you who may want to move away from a traditional church or registrar ceremony. It allows you to create a bespoke wedding that captures your style and approach. Before booking a celebrant consider the below: ♥ Be sure to have an initial discussion before making your final decision. It’s important that you connect and are comfortable that the supplier represents you both. ♥ If possible, choose a local celebrant as this will make it easier for you both to keep in touch. ♥ Although not essential, look for a professionally qualified supplier and don’t be afraid to ask about their experience. ♥ Check out what’s included in the contract and the cost of the ceremony. There may be extra costs such as travel or additional elements such as handfasting, unity candle or a sand ceremony. ♥ Most companies commit to only one wedding a day to ensure that you have no added time pressures. Check that is the case and if not, be clear about time restrictions. ♥ Social media, websites, magazines and Google searches are a good place to start your search, but also talk to other suppliers as word of mouth recommendations are also great. ♥ Book as early as possible as, like many other suppliers, the good ones are in high demand. ♥ Just remember, to be legally married, you will still need to do the legal bits in the registry office. Most couples do this a day or two before their celebrant ceremony at a cost of around £50. Carol Gunter | Celebrant www.yourspecialcelebration.co.uk

Love is in the air

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.

FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would

52

be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them

and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Melissa. x

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.

I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.

Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.

Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.

How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.

Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.

The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.

To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.

To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 53

The latest styling trends

W

ith everything that’s been going on in the last year, you may have found it difficult to keep up with the latest styling trends, so to help you plan the perfect celebration, we’ve asked local suppliers to send in some of their top tips and trend predictions.

“Perhaps the biggest trend for 2022, partly due to everyone being cooped up during the pandemic, is the great outdoors. We are seeing couples get more adventurous with their locations and wanting to be free of walls and surrounded by nature.” – Beth Stretton from Megan & Claude.

www.misselthwaiteflowersltd.co.uk

www.misselthwaiteflowersltd.co.uk

“Fun is definitely on everyone’s post-pandemic agenda, and both adults and children can enjoy giant garden games during a wedding. It’s something we see returned to again and again during the day.” – Beth from Megan & Claude.

www.meganandclaude.co.uk

www.hookedincotton.co.uk

“Take a deep breath and mix it all up! Throw in a touch of classic and a spoonful of playful to capture every bit of you. Close your eyes and add colour to the mix, and you are sure to come up with an incredible styling plan. Do not forget about fairylights – they are a must.” – Claire from Hookedin Cotton.

“Natural backdrops with sustainable dried floral installations make a strong statement and appeal to many free-spirited modern brides. Think about incorporating macrame into your table runners, napkin rings, seating plan, tipis, swings, chair backs and favours. With many local macrame designers available, you’re sure to have beautiful styling.” – Claire from Hookedin Cotton.

www.richandmaria.co and www.meganandclaude.co.uk

“Backdrops for your cake, ceremony and selfie stations add another layer of texture and interest, making your photos and memories pop off the screen! It’s one sure way to ensure your personalities shines on the day.” – Claire McGeer from Hookedin Cotton.

“Covid has meant couples have had to rearrange everything and, as a florist, I was worried that flowers were going to be one of the first things to be stripped down but couples have been using the last year as an excuse to go all out, and who can blame them? My brides, in particular, are so excited to be planning again, waving goodbye to the likes of flower walls and hello to big statement pieces like climbing stair garlands and outdoor arrangements.” – Hayley Rees from Misselthwaite Flowers Ltd. 59

www.meganandclaude.co.uk

“On the other end is a cleaner, more minimalistic table. This sees a return of the crisp white tablecloth and greenery in brighter and finer form than the eucalyptus of the past few years. This look is often paired with glass cylinders and floating candles.” – Beth from Megan & Claude.

“With so many shapes, sizes, and builds of frames to choose from – you will only be limited by your imagination. Do not forget to make full use of them and move them around on your day. Consider double-sided use or adding a magnificent quote on a fabric banner on the back. Work with a macrame artist to create a frame design that looks just as good from the back as it does from the front! With sustainable dyeing processes, you can add colour in so many ways, and the range now available in recycled, sustainable cotton cords and ropes is just inspiring!” – Claire from Hookedin Cotton. “Couples have waited for what seems like a lifetime for their big day, and they are choosing romantic colours for the ultimate fairytale wedding. Flowers such as peonies, roses and hydrangeas are proving popular for this trend, as their fluffy textures and deep range of colours ooze a utopian wedding.” – Hayley from Misselthwaite Flowers Ltd.

www.owenhowellsphotography.co.uk and www.meganandclaude.co.uk

www.hookedincotton.co.uk

“When viewing your venue, look up too! Could you add statement lanterns and ambient lighting for when your magical day turns darker and more romantic? Macrame lanterns come in all shapes and sizes and add a little lux boho to your day. Adding colour to gorgeous fibres, textures, and intricate knots will make everyone look at your wedding arch differently!” – Claire from Hookedin Cotton.

“There have been some great events recently which have brought nature to their tables, and I see this trend continuing into 2022. One highlight was a recent event where everything was themed with lemons and limes. It worked brilliantly, gave a Mediterranean feel to a summer wedding and made the day brighter for everyone. We are working on a wedding in winter 2022, at which woodland animals feature heavily – forming table décor and the table plan itself.” – Beth from Megan & Claude.

“Greenery! And lots of it! Couples are looking for a more natural look to complement their picturesque barn or outdoor settings, and this trend ticks all the floral styling boxes! Eucalyptus in all shapes and sizes, ruscus, asparagus fern and olive branches lend themselves perfectly to this trend and can be made into garlands and wreaths to adorn your rustic wedding.” – Hayley from Misselthwaite Flowers Ltd.

VENUE STYLING

www.misselthwaiteflowersltd.co.uk

“Geometric shapes are the name of the game here, tall rectangular centrepieces, dripping in champagne and coffee coloured flowers, complemented by aspidistra leaves sprayed in glittering golds or sparkling silvers. Greenery seems to be popular with this trend also, with muted cream and peach roses teamed with champagne coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, this trend is a winner!” – Hayley from Misselthwaite Flowers Ltd.

www.misselthwaiteflowersltd.co.uk

“The grazing table was just becoming a big deal when the pandemic hit. Since then, weddings have not been able to indulge the trend because sharing food was very much off the menu. In a postpandemic world, we see this making a big return, and so we have developed our table toppers to allow everyone to tuck in!” – Beth from Megan & Claude.

www.ellarichardsonphotography.co.uk and www.meganandclaude.co.uk

www.misselthwaiteflowersltd.co.uk

“Biggest trend for me will be modular backdrops! You can create macrame backdrops or chairbacks and convert them into the most perfect gift for your moms and bride tribe, so they have beautiful wall-hangings in their homes to look at and remind them of your perfect day!” – Claire from Hookedin Cotton.

www.hookedincotton.co.uk

“This classic dress from High Society Bridal Boutique styled with a modern industrial copper frame by Oh So Curious, and custom colour balloons from House Of Events work so well against the khaki backdrop. Of course, the macrame styling in the venue had to tie in with the bridal bouquet too. Similarly, the lace dress complements the balloon and macrame arch – but wow, how well does this all go with the statement denim jacket from Best Day Ever? Just pure attitude and personality!” – Claire from Hookedin Cotton.

“Disco is going to be big! Disco music, disco balls and disco themes. Our silver ball ceilings are becoming a regular feature that adds something to a marquee or blank canvas barn.” – Beth from Megan & Claude.

www.hookedincotton.co.uk

“I think the recent trend towards copper and rose-gold has arisen due to the current colour fashions. It fits with warm colours like yellows, burnt oranges and peaches. Paired with rich cream linen and a copper cutlery set is wonderfully classy.” – Beth from Megan & Claude.

hen this styled shoot first landed in our inbox, we just knew our lovely readers would adore it. Photographer, Oliver Rees tells us more: “After discovering that Cobbles Kitchen & Deli had become a licensed wedding venue, we jumped at the chance to bring our modern boho vision to life. We wanted to showcase this popular theme with a contemporary twist, so the room was filled with pampas grass, handcrafted products and warm earthy colours. The team brought the shoot together seamlessly, and it was amazing to watch the Hayloft Room being transformed into a boho wonderland. Our real couple, Katie and James, looked flawless and rocked every photo opportunity, whether it was in front of the striking neon backdrop or at the nearby beach. This shoot was an opportunity to give local suppliers that much needed boost after an incredibly difficult year. The results show that we’re all back with a boho-inspired bang!”

ANYONE FOR TEA?

Toner, often the forgotten skincare routine step, is actually hugely beneficial. It can help with breakouts, remove the last traces of make-up, eliminate excess oil, help balance the skin’s pH levels, soothe and refresh. So, check out the new Q+A Green Tea Daily Toner (£8). Ideal for everyone, especially those with stressed-out skin, it’s packed full of antioxidants that protect from environmental damage. One in particular, EGCG, can even rejuvenate dying skin cells to restore and repair skin. Green Tea itself is rich in vitamin E, a moisturising ingredient known to minimise signs of ageing, amongst myriad other benefits. Check out www.qandaskin.com

THAT’S A WRAP

The Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is the latest innovation from cult hair health brand AQUIS. Made from a naturally antimicrobial performance fabric it allows the hair to dry without force or heat and eliminates the frizz, damage and breakage caused by harsh terry towels. Hair is at its weakest when wet so protecting it from such harsh treatment means it’ll be smoother and stronger. What’s more, since it’s woven with copper, which boasts antimicrobial and antibacterial properties proven to repel bacteria the wrap stays fresher longer, and is great for travel. I absolutely love mine – it’s taken the stress out of washing my hair in more ways than one. Check out www.aquishair.co.uk where the AQUIS Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is priced at £30. 76

SILKY SMOOTH

Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. PERFECT PREP

Award-winning and cruelty-free make-up brand Milani Cosmetics has introduced the Rose Prep + Prime range to Boots and Beauty Bay. It’s all about nourishing and replenishing your skin for a radiant complexion and dewy glow. I’m a fan of the lip treatment products in particular, which were game-changers for me! The Rose Sugar Lip Scrub (£13.75) comes first in the pamper session, polishing dry and chapped areas for an ultra-soft and smooth pout. Follow with The Rose Butter Lip Mask (£13.75), which contains hyaluronic acid to plump and replenish moisture. Your lipstick will look perfect on the day and your bridal make-up artist will love you for doing all the prep for them! These little heroes are available at www.milanimakeup.co.uk

Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty

Tim McBaj

It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.

B

orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 78

liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!

Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant

and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.

“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and

sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

Huda Beauty Glow Obsessions Highlighter Palette £27, www.boots.com “For all those glamorous brides-to-be, this is the perfect product to define your features and achieve that gorgeous glow. The pocket-sized palettes come with four different shades to match any make-up style and I loved mixing them to create a bespoke hue. To achieve a luminous complexion, I applied to the high points of my face including my cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and bridge of my nose, and this buttery, powdered formula blended in beautifully. A big bonus for me was that you can add a small amount for a natural look or build up for a glam finish that looks great in photos.” — Olivia Gibson

GLOW UP!

Looking to achieve that oh-so stunning bridal glow for your wedding day? These products can help and team CWM have put them to the test Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Liquid Illuminator £26, www.spacenk.com “On turning to YouTube for help on how to use this product I found a tutorial video by Kevyn Aucoin’s fab director of artistry and education, Nick Lujan, and less than 10 minutes later, I was good to go! I put two of Nick’s suggested uses to the test and was impressed by both. Day one: layering Glass Glow on the cheekbones before foundation application, I received compliments on my luminous complexion! Day two: I mixed Glass Glow with my foundation and was wowed by the fresh even, natural-looking glow I achieved. Top tip? Don’t be deterred by the sparkle, the result is flawless.” — Kelly Andrews

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacianmide Dew Drops £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “As a bride-to-be, I know how important it is to look fabulous on your big day, so I was excited to try these drops designed to give you a fresh, dewy look. The product smells amazing, and a little pump goes a long way, so although it’s not the cheapest, it’ll take you a long time to go through it all. I used the drops every morning for a few days and noticed a difference right away. My skin felt softer and looked hydrated. I’m planning to use it on the morning of my wedding and would definitely recommend it.” — Melissa Barker 80

Sculpted by Aimee Second Skin Dewy Finish Foundation £24, www.sculptedbyaimee.com “Ideal for normal to dry skin this moisturising foundation has a gorgeously smooth texture that’s super-easy to blend resulting in an even finish. One pump is all that’s needed for a light application or for days when more coverage is in order a couple of pumps should do the trick. I loved the healthy glow and breathable feel it left me with. I was also thrilled to learn of its anti-ageing properties: music to my ears having hit 40 during lockdown!” — Kelly Andrews

Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist £18, www.naos-store.co.uk “I’ve never used a mist before but I’m very much a convert after this product. It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” — Danielle Harvey

Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Skin Tint £32, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This little beauty is a must in anyone’s make-up kit; the lightweight product blends like a dream. The sheer coverage formula was the perfect balance to even out my skin tone while leaving a natural-looking finish. I used the shade fair, applied it with a beauty blender and found that all my other beauty products layered beautifully over it. I was left with a glowy base and brightened complexion. I’d recommend this product for the summer and warmer weather!” — Olivia Gibson

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND

I’ve bought a dress with no embellishments, and now I’m worried it’s too plain. How can I add the wow factor to it? It’s amazing what a few simple accessories can do to a plain dress. A belt or sash is always a good place to start. Whether you pick something with sparkle or lace, it’s a great way to define your waist and bring a little something extra to your overall look. Think about what accessories you’ll be having in your hair, as these can add to the overall look of your gown. Lastly, look for a statement veil or cape. If your dress is plain, a long statement veil could be just what you need to bring the wow factor. It’s always a great idea to try on different accessories when you try on your dress at your chosen boutique. That way you can see exactly what suits you and get a much better idea of how it looks together. Some boutiques offer accessory appointments, so you can take your dress and try on different options. Rachel Parry | Wedding dress expert www.facebook.com/breconbridalboutique

FALL IN LOVE I’ve decided to wear a red wedding dress for our autumn-themed wedding. My mum wants to wear an outfit that will fit the time of year but not clash with my gown. Do you have any suggestions? I love the sound of your wedding! Red is such a beautiful, bold colour, so whilst looking for the perfect outfit for your mum, there are a few things to consider. What do you want the wedding party to look like? Would you like to adopt the colour red alongside an autumn theme throughout? Perhaps look at berry shades of bright magenta, deep aubergine or burnt orange. Alternatively, you could use softer tones of beige or gold, which are rich and luxurious and will really make her dress pop. Most importantly, the colour must suit your mum’s complexion leaving her feeling confident and excited for the big day. Coryn Emma | Mother-of-the-bride/groom expert www.baroqueboutique.co.uk 84
