It’s official, I’m a married woman –eeek! After being engaged for nearly 18 months, and with all of the lockdowns and uncertainty, it’s been quite a rollercoaster of emotions, but I couldn’t have asked for a better day!

Before the wedding, everyone told us that the day would go by in a flash, and they were right. From putting my dress on to the speeches felt like just minutes had passed. My number one piece of advice is to take some time out, just the two of you, to have a chat and take everything in.

Things will go wrong, but that’s okay. On the day, you won’t notice the little things, and all that will matter will be celebrating with your friends and family. Surround yourself with people that you love and trust. My bridesmaids were absolutely amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They kept my nerves in check and made sure I felt like a beautiful bride. I couldn’t have asked for better, and I was so proud to have them by my side.

To help you plan your special day, we’ve put together an issue full of inspiration. We have a feature focusing on the latest styling trends, a guide to planning your big day and local historic venues. If that’s not enough, we also highlight showstopping dresses, autumnal trends for the groom-to-be and wow-factor honeymoon destinations.

If you’d like your wedding featured in the magazine or have been involved with a styled shoot, you can submit it www.yoursouthwales.wedding/get-involved-real-weddingvia

LET THE FUN BE-GIN

The award-winning Hensol Castle has launched a new range of miniature gins that are perfect as wedding favours. Couples wanting something a little more special can opt to have these gin miniatures personalised with their names and the date of their wedding.

Distilled in the cellars of the 400-year-old castle, couples have three gins to choose from – Hensol Castle Welsh Dry Gin, Hensol Castle Wild Strawberry & Hibiscus Gin and Hensol Castle Blood Orange Zest Gin. Stephanie Metson, the marketing manager, said: “These personalised wedding favours are ideal, as they give guests a little tipple to toast the happy couple as well as a lovely keepsake bottle to take home as a momento of the special day. Since we launched them at the end of July, the orders have been flying in. Hensol Castle offers couples the full package. Aside from the fact that the castle can be hired exclusively with the whole party celebrating on-site, it also provides a picturesque backdrop for photographs with its original features, serpentine lake and 650 acres of parkland. When you combine this with the fact that the wedding party can visit the distillery and even distill their own bespoke bottle of gin, or that the hen or stag party can enjoy a cocktail making masterclass before the big day, then you can see how it creates the perfect package for any couple saying their vows.”

Claire and Mike celebrated their big day at Hensol Castle surrounded by their family and friends

Images courtesy of HitchFlicks

Claire and Mike met through work. “We had both recently come out of long-term relationships,” says Claire. “We chatted over a coffee and there was an instant spark between us. We became inseparable and lockdown meant that we got to spend a lot of time together.”

Mike popped the question a year after they started dating. “He had planned to surprise me during a trip to New York,” shares the bride. “However, due to COVID-19, the holiday was cancelled. The day that we found out we weren’t able to go, Mike decided that there was no time like the present and asked me to be his wife in our back garden. The sun was setting behind the mountains, and it was perfect!”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

ME 35 REAL WEDDINGS

We went to view Hensol Castle and instantly fell in love with it. After all, who doesn’t want to get married in a castle? Especially such a beautiful one in an amazing setting. We had exclusivity, which meant we were able to do everything in one place, and our family were able to stay over on the night of the wedding.

favours were personalised glass charms and keyrings. We also included lottery tickets, bottle openers, sweets and chocolates.

Mike and I chose centrepieces that were decorated with fresh blooms from Rolfes Florist. The flowers were a big part of the theme of the wedding. We had a beautiful arch that was purposely made for the castle and blooms placed down the staircase of the castle. We also wanted to make sure that all the flowers were not wasted, so we separated them into sections allowing our guests to take them home after the wedding. The spray from the ceremony room was later placed on the top table and then used in memory of my father afterwards.

Bella Cakes provided a four-tiered design decorated with buttercream icing and flowers. The bottom tier was champagne and strawberries, the second was Biscoff, the third was chocolate, and the top was fruit cake, which we kept for our first Christmas as a married couple.

We used vintage-looking brown hessian bags to hold the favours, and each one had a handwritten name tag which doubled up as a place

It was important to us that we had a memory ladder to remember loved ones that could not be with us. The ladder was vintage-looking and decorated with fairylights, candles and flowers.

I wore a gown called Celestina by Sophia Tolli, which I purchased from Cardiff Bridal Centre. The ivory fit-and-flare dress had a V-neckline, beaded straps, a floral crepe and a beautiful long Chantilly lace train. I accessorised with a floral hair vine and a beaded chapel-length veil.

The best thing we booked was the singing waiters that only Mike and I knew about. They were undercover from the start and were serving drinks and food at the wedding breakfast. They were so in character that we forgot that they were there! One of the waiters pretended to fall. which got everyone’s attention and then started to sing. They got our guests singing and dancing and it was great to see our loved ones having such a good time. In the evening, we had a DJ and sax player. I booked the sax player as a surprise for Mike, which went down a treat. Once it got dark, we had sparklers, which created a fantastic photo opportunity.

The groomsmen opted for three-piece Italian fitted suits in steel grey with blush pink ties and handkerchiefs. Mike wore a white waistcoat to stand out, while the others had steel blue versions. We hired a pianist who played while the guests arrived and as I walked down the aisle. We also had mini-golf which entertained the children and adults while the photographs were being taken.

Our day was amazing! People always tell you that it goes so fast, and it really does. It was such a whirlwind. We were fortunate that we got to spend most of the time with each other, and everything went so perfectly. The best bit of advice that we can offer is to not sweat the small stuff and to concentrate on what the day is really all about.

Seeing how our families came together and everyone enjoying each other’s company was wonderful.

After the ceremony, we released doves with the help of Lynne from Lovey Dovey UK. This was to celebrate our marriage and also to pay respect and remember those that couldn’t be with us. Lynne was so professional, attentive and helpful. She was also great at tying up a few little loose ends, like the younger boys’ ties and helping to put Mike’s mind at ease before I arrived. These are all things that she wasn’t expected to do, and that made a big difference.

For our honeymoon, we went to Cancún in Mexico. We went for two weeks and it was absolutely brilliant. We went on day trips, a catamaran, snorkelled with sea turtles and other sea life and got to swim in the underwater museum!

Jordan and Craig chose a black, white and silver colour scheme for their wedding at Gileston Manor Images courtesy of Jenny McDonnell Photography

Jordan and Craig met through a mutual friend during a night out in Cardiff. “There was an initial spark, but we only met briefly, so we didn’t know each other’s names,” says Jordan. “A few days later, I received a friend request on Facebook from Craig. We were attracted to each other, but the beginning of our relationship was not what we had planned as I had just gone on holiday and ended up stranded in Gran Canaria as a result of the Ash Cloud. After our first date was delayed, we finally met after a month of messaging. We moved in together within five months, got engaged two months after that and have not looked back since. We even work together running our own hairCraigsalon.”proposed on Christmas Day in 2010. “The day didn’t go according to plan as there was heavy snow,” shares Jordan. “Craig couldn’t get to the ring, so we had to walk through the snow for over an hour so he could pick it up in person. We did all this without me knowing it was an engagement ring! The ring was hidden in a giant Christmas cracker, together with a puzzle that I had to solve, which spelled out will you marry me?”

SETTING THE SCENE

“We visited Gileston Manor to celebrate my mum and dads 50th wedding anniversary,” explains Jordan. “We stayed as a family and fell in love with the place. It has a special feel and is like nowhere we had visited before. The staff were all so lovely, and we felt it was the perfect place to get married. Wendy, our wedding coordinator at Gileston Manor, could not do enough for us from our very first meeting right through to the day itself. We always felt in safe hands, and her insight and knowledge really helped with our planning. We had exclusivity of the estate, which gave us the freedom to use different areas to create a bespoke wedding exactly to our requirements. Our ceremony and wedding breakfast was in the secret garden and we utilised the walled garden and front lawns for our drinks reception, canapés and photographs. We wanted to have the intimacy of the smaller space for the day, then move to the marquee for the evening reception to have a larger space for more guests. This was perfect as it felt that the evening was separate and gave separation to the formality of the day and the more relaxed party vibe we wanted for the night.”

Jordan and Craig opted for a modern elegance theme and a black and white colour palette with touches of silver. “We wanted to highlight the elegance of the venue, keeping some traditional touches but adding a modern theme to reflect our style and outgoing personalities,” recalls Jordan. “Our overall goal was to have a look that was striking yet timeless.

“We designed our own signature motif that we used on our invitations, favour boxes, tags and menu cards,” adds Jordan. “This brought together all printed elements in a uniformed way. Our confetti was sourced from The Real Flower Petal Confetti Co and incorporated black and white rose petals with silver petals to add some sparkle.”

The couple opted for black cubes as favours. “The boxes had our tuxedo design tag on the front,” remembers Jordan. “As salon owners, we treated our loved ones to a bespoke collection of mini Kevin Murphy shampoo, conditioner and a styling product. We also included a bag of sweets and our favourite chocolates. Craig’s mum, unfortunately, was not able to be with us for the day as she suffers from dementia, therefore we made a donation to Dementia UK and included a flower seed bomb together with a card that requested our guests plant the flowers to honour her.

“We decided on a banqueting-style table plan with just ourselves on a top table which meant that we could see all our guests,” continues Jordan. “Our table plan and welcome sign were provided

by Welsh Elegance. These were mirrors with white vinyl printed text.”

The lovebirds purchased their flowers from Nicola Downie Florist. “We had seen her work at a friend’s wedding and loved her style,” shares Jordan. “We had two long banqueting tables for the wedding breakfast, so we wanted a floral design that ran down the centre of each of them. Nicola used her creative vision and talents to provide us with a few design suggestions. Through our consultations, she got to know our personalities and envisioned a concept that we had not previously thought of. The result was breathtaking. We had 120 individual clear glass vases in five different designs, shapes and heights mixed through the centre of each table. We also had a pedestal arrangement and a top table display incorporating the same white and green design.

“Our cake was from The Sweet Cake Kitchen,” explains Jordan. “Claire worked with us to create the perfect design. We wanted a traditional three-tier creation with a modern element. Claire incorporated our theme with two black bottom tiers and a single white top tier, finished with silver leaf cascading down and around the cake. Each layer was decorated with flowers to bring in the natural floral element. We also made a fruit cake using Craig’s mum’s traditional recipe, which had been a tradition to make at Christmas until her recent dementia diagnosis.”

Epic Caterers provided the food for the wedding breakfast. “We cannot fault the quality of the food, the taste, value for money or the service they provided,” recalls Jordan. “We wanted a more relaxed feel for the evening where guests could eat throughout the night, so we asked Butty Bach to provide hot roll options and sides with their speciality brownies. We had a brownie station featuring eight different flavours. We also had food boxes so guests could take a selection home with them.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Jordan and Craig wore three-piece black tuxedos from Moss Bros. “These were customised to our individual style,” adds Jordan. “Craig had cropped trousers, and we both had Swarovski crystal buttons, with Craig choosing silver versions while I opted for black.”

The maid-of-honour wore a one-shoulder side split dress in light grey from Chi Chi London.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We asked Jeris Music to sing as the guests arrived and during the ceremony,” remembers Jordan. “Our friends and family loved this and said how fantastic Jeris was. We also had the Welsh National String Quartet perform during our drinks reception. This was a fantastic addition as they played a selection of pop songs which added to the traditional and modern mix. The DJ provided everything we needed for our wedding night as we moved to the marquee for the party. They set up a light-up dancefloor, giant love letters, a neon sign, mirror balls and fireworks.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“The sheer excitement took over our nerves,” says Jordan. “After all the planning, stress and delays, we were just so excited and grateful that our wedding day had arrived. Walking down the aisle and seeing our loved ones so happy for us was an incredible feeling. We also loved sitting at the top table looking out at all of our guests, watching them smile and laugh. We cannot fault any of our suppliers for all their hard work and for the attention to detail in making our day so perfect.”

We made it

After several cancellations and a fire at their venue, Louisa and Jonny finally had the wedding of their dreams

Louisa

and Jonny hit it off right away. “Jonny would regularly come to the local social club where I worked, and we would just chat,” says the bride.

“We really liked each other and exchanged numbers. After a few weeks of texting and calls, Jonny asked me out on a date, and that’s where it all started. He always said he would catch me off guard and propose when I least expected it. In December 2017, we had booked to take our two children to Disneyland Paris. As the date was getting closer, I thought that this was his opportunity to do it, as he knows how much I love Disney and it would have been absolutely perfect, but to my surprise he didn’t propose. On Christmas Day, a few days after our Disneyland trip, we were opening our presents when Jonny got up and pulled a box out of the tree. Jonny is a bit of a joker, so I honestly didn’t expect the box to be an engagement ring until he got down on one knee, opened the box and asked me to marry him. I was still in my pyjamas, but Jonny definitely kept his promise by catching me off guard, and it was perfect.”

The couple had to postpone several times due to COVID-19. “A few weeks after our engagement, we started wedding planning,” explains Louisa. “We wanted to get married in a church in June 2020. We found our dream venue, Ocean View Windmill Gower, and booked it for June 2020. Just 13 weeks before our wedding, the whole of the UK was in lockdown and with no sign of our day being able to go ahead, we made the devasting decision to postpone until July 2021. Fast forward to January 2021, and COVID 19 was still rife with new variants, which were spreading fast, so we decided to postpone until June 2022.”

Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 47

A week before the wedding, we had the devastating news that our wedding venue, Ocean View Windmill Gower, had caught fire and were unable to host our wedding reception. We were absolutely devastated and not sure what we were going to do! We were kindly offered to use Weobley Castle as our venue, and with just five days until the wedding, it was all systems go. Lynne from Ocean View Windmill Gower organised for a marquee to be set up and was more than happy to help, and the owner of The Wedding Business offered to dress the marquee for us.

As there was no kitchen in the barn, we had to think of what food we could offerour guests. Jonny knew the owner of The Greedy Pig who did a hog roast, andOcean View Windmill Gower offered to do some cold platters to accompany thehog. For our evening food, we asked The Gower Dough Co if they could bring theirdouble-decker bus and do fresh pizzas, which was a massive hit with our guests.

Jonny and I cannot thank everyone enough for what they did for us to make sure our day went ahead in just days! When we walked in on our wedding day, we were overwhelmed and completely speechless. It was breathtaking!

We had a trailer bar run by Gower Brewery and hired toilets for the day.

Jonny and his mum, Diane, made our centrepieces with hoops, flowers and floating candles.
48
The whole day was perfect from start to finish. It felt as though it was planned to bethat way all along! Mark Dowson performed the saxophone in the evening, which was absolutely amazing and really made the reception! We had magician, Phil Jay entertain our guests during the wedding breakfast, which was a huge hit. Jonny and I named our tables after different nightclubs. We gave our guests personalised chocolates as favours.

Planned to perfection

How to organise your dream wedding

FINDING THE PERFECT WEDDING DRESS

Planning a wedding is no small task! From the flowers and venue to the invitations and music, there’s lots to consider and so many options to choose from. When it comes to the dress however, we’ve got you covered! Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the big day:

When should I start looking for my wedding dress? As soon as possible! Dresses can generally take anything from six to 10 months to be ordered and that’s after you have found the one. If you’re an indecisive bride, your search could prolong the process even more. We would therefore recommend that you leave at least 12 months to find your bridal gown in order to avoid disappointment.

How do I choose a bridal boutique? Picking the bridal boutique that best suits you shouldn’t necessarily be the one that is closest to you. It’s important that you research a multitude of different stores, exploring the designers that they stock, as well as past customer reviews via their website and social media platforms.

Do you have any tips for choosing the perfect dress? It can be extremely overwhelming when you first start looking for your dress. Ideally, before your appointment, we would advise you to do a bit of research to get some wedding dress inspiration as to what you want your

gown to look like, whether it be in magazines, on Pinterest or Instagram. This gives your stylist more insight into your bridal vision and helps to progress the appointment in the right direction.

That being said, try not to get too set on dresses you may have seen online. It’s important to stay open-minded and remember that a dress will look different on than it does on the hanger. We would also recommend that you bring a small entourage whose opinions you can trust. Keep in mind that if a party is too large, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by a flood of differing opinions, making it impossible to make a decision.

Finally, don’t try on too many dresses! After trying on 10-15 gowns, ensure that you carefully select the dresses you try on and avoid designs that are chosen solely to please your entourage.

How do I stay within budget? If you’re working to a budget, let your stylist know. This way they know what they’re working with and won’t pull dresses that are outside of an amount that you’re comfortable with. This is the best way to avoid the pain of falling in love with a dress that you can’t afford. team at All About Eve

CHOOSING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

We understand that your wedding is an exceptional day for you and your spouse. Your photographer will provide you with memories that will last a lifetime, which will enable you to revisit the most precious moments of your wedding day over and over again.

Look for a supplier who meets all of your expectations and captures the emotions of the day. They should be highly-experienced and offer you a new and exciting way to get your photographs.

Look online, in magazines and on social media to help you decide what style of photography you like. Once you’ve done this, you can begin searching for the perfect photographer. Every supplier will offer different packages and pricing structures. Look on their website or enquire to see what’s included in the price.

Most photographers will happily travel but find out if this costs extra beforeFinally, booking.before booking check out their reviews from previous couples to make sure you’re getting a great service.

Once you’ve found the perfect photographer, they will most likely ask you to complete an online booking form and pay a deposit to secure your date. We recommend you spend time with your supplier before your wedding to ensure you feel comfortable around them, after all you’ll be spending most of your day with them.

PRESERVING YOUR WEDDING FLOWERS

Have you thought about what you’re going to do with your bouquet once your special day is over? On average, eight per cent of a couple’s overall budget is put towards flowers, yet there’s no thought about what happens to them afterwards. Gone are the days where the only option was to bin or air dry them, there are now lots of ways flowers can be preserved. Just imagine being able to keep a part of your special day encapsulated in a timelessFlowermemory.preservation

is a worth while investment, it’s becoming popular amongst newlyweds who want to not only keep a part of their day for themselves but also to gift to their family and friends.

My greatest tip would be to book early, as vendor’s diaries can book

up extremely fast.

Choose a company like you would pick your photographer by looking at their style, level of communication and reviews.

Research the FAQ’s on their website to familiarise yourself with frequent queries and what to expect.

Ask questions. We love helping you feel comfortable with your decision on how you’d like your bouquet to be preserved.

Look out for any discounts as some artists will run offers and savings.

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Ourwedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details and madesure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minute meetingwith her to run through the plan for the day, which we found was agreat help and meant we knew exactly what to expect. I recommendbooking a venue with a dedicated wedding coordinator or hiring anexternal company, so that you can relax and enjoy yourself withouthaving to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening reception thatwould get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazing trio wholearnt our first dance song and incorporated some of our favouritetunes into their set list. We were a bit worried that people would getbored or restless throughout the day, but all of our guests were quitecontent chatting during the drinks reception, and I’m quite glad wekept things scaled back as it allowed us to catch up with friends andfamily who we hadn’t seen in a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’t meet untilthe morning of the wedding. Originally, this made me feel anxious butthe whole process went smoothly, and the ladies conducting our servicewere calming and reassuring. We incorporated promises to each otherin our vows that we felt represented us as a couple. For those of youabout to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, asthere’s nothing more special than looking into your partner’s eyes andtelling them how much you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

HOT TOPIC Wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

MADE WITH LOVE

I want to preserve my wedding flowers and give them to my bridesmaids as gifts. Do you have any suggestions of how I do this?

Get in touch with your supplier as far in advance as possible to secure your date. A week or so before your wedding, your preservation artist will be in touch to discuss what designs you would like. You’ll then receive information on the postage and packaging of your flowers. This is likely to be the last thing on your mind after your wedding, so nominating someone from your bridal party or a family member to oversee the postage of your flowers will take the pressure off, after all, you’re likely going to be super excited about heading off on your honeymoon.

Some brides provide bridesmaids’ bags as gifts the night before their wedding, so why not pop a little note in there to say a thank you gift is being handmade for them with the flowers after the wedding? Once your blooms have been posted, let your preservation artist do the rest.

COUNTING THE PENNIES

We want to book our photographer and were wondering how we can keep the price down without compromising on quality?

The first thing you need to do is decide on a realistic budget. You can pay anything from £500 to £2,500 or more. Keep in mind that the most expensive photographer is not necessarily the best and the cheapest may not be the worst. Start by speaking to any friends or family that have recently been married and find out what they paid to give you an idea of the cost.

Next, decide how long you would like your photographer to be at your wedding. Do you want preparation photos, a full day up to your first dance, or just to the wedding breakfast and speeches? This can help lower the price.

Before reaching out, check out a photographer’s website to see if their style fits what you’re looking for.

Remember to send as much information as possible to a photographer when asking for a quote and keep in mind that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is!

shoot and is it worth booking one?

When you mention a pre-wedding shoot or an engagement shoot, I think most people envisage cheesy posing that looks a bit silly and doesn’t feel like them. Dismiss that notion immediately because that’s not what we’re going for!

When I book clients in for a pre-wedding shoot it serves three main purposes; we get to know each other and build a rapport before your wedding, we will test out a few different posing ideas so we can see what works for you and what kind of ‘looks’ you like and finally you will have some lovely images to incorporate into your wedding plans. The first two points are (in my opinion) the most important. Weddings are hectic; there are so many moving parts and lots of emotions going on, so if you already know your photographer well, feel comfortable around them (and maybe have a few inside jokes), then it’ll feel less like having a stranger in the room with you. Your wedding day will go very quickly, therefore it can save a bunch

of time if you and your partner already know which kind of photos you like and how you’re going to pose. It also makes it way more fun!

TRULY ROMANTIC

My partner and I have just got engaged and are excited to start looking for a venue. How do we begin our search?

Don’t skip the research. Having a rough idea of what style inspires you will help you choose the perfect location for your big day. Start looking through magazines or go online for inspiration. The key is to compile your favourite imagery into one easy-to-access place, creating an inspiration board that will guide you through a lot of your future decisions! Once you have that together, the rest falls into three easy steps:

Know your numbers/location – Have a rough idea of how many people you want to celebrate with, both for the ceremony and the after party, and what kind of backdrop would best suit your nuptials. It might be a bustling hotel in the city, a marquee by the sea, or even a castle tucked away in the heart of a National Park. Your inspiration board will help with this as you’ll notice clear themes will start to emerge, and knowing your numbers will save you from visiting venues that can’t cater for your party size.

Get surfing – Now you know what to look for, get on the internet and be specific with your search; using keywords that fit your dream destination. You often get some helpful articles from compilation sites, saving you the time and effort of trawling through multiple pages. Book some appointments and get visiting – This is the BEST part.

PICK OF THE BUNCH

Before you make an enquiry the most important thing to do is to spend some time researching the style of flowers that you like. Look at different designs and colours and go with your heart. During your research, you will come across a florist or two whose designs make you smile. These are the ones for you! Give them a ring or drop an email and arrange to have a chat. Before booking, ask the following questions:

Are they free on your wedding day? There’s not much point running through everything to discover they are already booked.

How many weddings are they doing on that day? Some florists can fit in three bookings in a day, so I would question whether this means your flowers could be a little rushed.

What is their style? Florists are creative people, and our personality and the way we see flowers will show in our designs. Look at lots of photos to see if the supplier is a match for your big day.

Do they deliver, is there a charge and have they worked at your venue before? Depending on how much you are spending on your flowers you may be charged for delivery. This is normal. Florists do not make a fortune out of their flowers, and costs are really high at the moment. It can be an advantage if the florist has been to your venue before. If not, then a good florist will visit the venue and chat with the managers about what they can and cannot do and what time they can have access.

Do they use any locally grown flowers? We are lucky to have some amazing local flower farmers near us, so see if your supplier uses these. Ask for in-season flowers as they look so much better than options that should be in bloom months earlier or later.

Are they a sustainable florist? It’s really important that floral foam is no longer used in the industry.

Can I have specific flowers? This is a hard one. I always say to my clients that we can choose a colour palette, and then they have to trust me! Trying to get a particular rose, tulip or peony can be impossible. Depending on weather conditions, some flowers are just not available, but there are so many other wonderful options to choose from, so keep an open mind. Your relationship with your florist needs to be based on trust. They are professionals, and will do their very best for you.

Can they take my flowers to a different location on the same day? Some florists will do this but will expect a fee. Be realistic though, if a

Try not to spend too long on websites making comparisons; check out pictures, capacity, and cost of packages. If a venue ticks those three boxes, hit the contact button and set up an appointment to visit. Try to enjoy the experience and remember only your opinion matters!

huge floral installation has been created around a church porch, that is going to have to stay there! If you want to re-use your ceremony flowers for later in the day, then chat through the possibilities with your florist.

Do they provide any other décor? Lots of florists have gorgeous candles, lanterns etc, and if you like their flowers, you’ll probably have the same taste. It’s always worth asking if you can hire them out.

Do I need to pay a deposit? Generally yes, you will be sent a booking form and asked for a deposit.

Can I change my mind? I ask all my couples a month before to re-send me some images of the flowers they like. It’s often the case that they have shifted slightly, but please don’t expect to be able to change your mind really close to the wedding day. The florist may well have pre-ordered your flowers and some farmers even grow them specifically for individual weddings.

Can I see a mock-up of my bouquet? I would honestly say it’s not necessary. The chances are when you book your florist it will be a different season to your wedding day, and so the flowers available will be completely different. Every bride’s bouquet is made with care and love and is unique. It would be impossible to recreate the exact bouquet, so as I said before, please trust your florist and then on the day, you will fall in love with not just your new husband or wife but your flowers too.

What questions should we ask a florist before booking?

Summer loving

When this styled shoot first appeared in our inbox, we just knew that our lovely readers would adore it. To find out more about how it came together, we spoke to the organiser Kirsten Tanner from Queen of the Meadow. She tells us: “South Wales has so many wonderful wedding suppliers, so I thought it would be a great idea to showcase their talents. Using seasonal flowers was very important to me, Penpont has a certified organic walled garden, so some of the flowers came from there, others were grown by Blue Hill Flora, and the rest were grown by myself.

“Penpont has so many lovely places to photograph, and Kate Richards Photography used her expert eye to find the most beautiful spots to take pictures. Along with having a Georgian façade, the

house has a bridge, river, walled garden, rose garden and numerous courtyards and pastel-coloured outbuildings that we used as backdrops. Megan & Claude chose pieces from their collection to style each area of the grounds.

“Our bride wore pieces chosen especially by Waxflower Bridal from their Bowen Dryden Collection, including a big, flouncy skirt and a silk-embroidered trouser suit. The groom’s outfit by Hanson –The Clothes People complimented these perfectly.

“Joanne at Miss Havisham’s Cakes provided three incredible wedding cakes, which had the most amazing details. Joanne’s work is always elegant, and we took time to add flowers to the cakes, including roses from the walled garden.”

The latest styling trends

If you’ve booked your venue, then the next thing you’ll be thinking about is how to style it. With so many options available, this can seem like a daunting task, but the most important thing to remember is that any space can be transformed with even the most simplist of details. To help give you some inspiration, we’ve put together some top tips and showcased images from some of our favourite real weddings and styled shoots.

“Tropical shades can look amazing, and if you’re going to use them in your flowers, then you will need to use greenery to allow the colours to pop. I love using natural elements which are brightly coloured to give a little element of surprise whilst keeping the flowers authentic. This is a great palette if you’re going for contemporary flowers. Use far fewer focal blooms and go big on the leaves. Remember, the glossier the leaves, the better!” – Rhian from Wild and Fabulous Flowers.

If you want to make a statement with your big-day blooms, why not opt for a flower arch? This can be used for the ceremony and then moved behind the top table for the reception or used as a backdrop for a photo booth.

Make the most of the unused space in your venue. Try decorating beams with tropical flowers, creating a grand staircase design or hanging colourful chandeliers from the ceiling.

COLOUR POP

My mum wants a dress with a splash of colour. What styles and designers should we look for?

Long gone are the days when the mother-of-the-bride or groom was expected to sport an overly conservative pastel number or a washedout beige frock. Today, mums have access to a vast plethora of styles, colours, and designers to ensure that they feel beautiful on their son’s or daughter’s big day.

When it comes to narrowing down the search, it’s important that the mother-of-the-bride (MOB) or mother-of-the-groom (MOG) considers a variety of factors. Choosing the right colour to suit and compliment your skin tone is essential for you to feel your best and can make you feel younger, more radiant, and revitalised.

We’ve put together a range of exquisite designers who offer dresses in a variety of vibrant shades that will best match you…

Perfect for warmer skin tones, designer Veni Infantino offers several showstopping moments, whether you’re wanting to look fierce in fuchsia or fabulously floral. Veni’s style is sophisticated, stylish, and feminine. Her

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

The ultimate

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to theDubrovnikairport!

is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on someWecocktails. hadafarewell

meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.  destination

94

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).McFarlane

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon).

There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Allow some time in this bustling area that offers a romantic mix of old meets new. Viva España!
