’ve worked at Country Wedding Magazines for more than four years and over that time I’ve seen trends come and go, inspirational real weddings and worked with some amazing suppliers. As a result, I thought I’d have a pretty good idea of what I’d want at my own wedding but when my partner, Dave, recently proposed I realised I have absolutely no idea. I’m sure lots of you will agree that the first few weeks of having the ‘engaged’ status and wearing the ring feels a bit surreal, but the endless possibilities are also really exciting. Like so many of you, we’re trying to plan the perfect wedding during a pandemic, so things have been a little unconventional so far with online tours, lots of Skype meetings and E-mails. Its been so wonderful to see first hand how suppliers in the wedding industry are going above and beyond to ensure their couples’ days are special, regardless of the restrictions. If like me, you’re looking for inspiration, then this issue is perfect for you. We’ve rounded up some of the best photographers, spoken to local entertainers, hair and make-up artists and a host of other talented suppliers. We have three real weddings starting on page 39 and a stunning shoot on page 73 that’s sure to inspire you. You can submit your wedding or styled shoot via our website or at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

Lace is a popular trend that we’ve seen make a comeback in the last few years. To ensure you look fabulous on your big day, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite designs.

REAL WEDDINGS

ACR O S S THE PO N D Katie and Frank felt an instant connection and a few years later tied the knot at Great Fosters Images courtesy of Che Birch–Hayes Photography

K

atie and Frank first laid eyes on each other in September 2015. “Frank had just moved to London from the USA,” says Katie. “We had our first date at The Edinboro Castle in Camden. We got on so well that we decided to have our second date the very next day! Although we grew up on different continents, we shared the same interests, values and experiences.” Frank popped the question in September 2018 on

Mackinac Island in Michigan, USA. “Frank would often visit the island with his family, so it meant a lot to him,” shares the bride. “I travelled there several years before while on a foreign exchange, so it has special meaning to both of us. We were on holiday visiting Frank’s family at the time, so they got to celebrate the proposal with us.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 39 

We had booked a weekend away at Great Fosters to escape the city during the summer. We fell in love with the charming Tudor estate and beautiful gardens. We knew from the get-go that we wanted to get married outside and the property ticked all of our boxes.

Each table was based on a place that has special meaning to us. Frank’s mum painted an iconic landmark from each destination that looked gorgeous.

We had blooms on the tables from Lily’s Flowers and individual vases as name holders. 40

As I’m half Chinese and Malaysian, we wanted to incorporate a nod to this, so we hand-decorated fortune cookies.

Going into the morning, we both felt nervous and excited. We put a lot of effort into making sure the day was exactly how we wanted it. We had guests travelling from all around the world, so it was important to us they had the best time possible.

REAL WEDDINGS

I’m 4ft 11in, so I wanted an elegant dress that wouldn’t overwhelm my petite frame. I opted for a Pronovias design and accessorised with low key jewellery. We had a four-tier bake with edible flowers from Amazing Grace Cakes and a vintage topper used by Frank’s grandparents.

Frank and the groomsmen wore traditional tail suits from Debenhams.

My bridesmaids opted for full-length, asymmetrical chiffon gowns from JJ’s House.

To keep our guests entertained, we hired The Surrey String Ensemble and Soul Beat. They were highly recommended by a friend who had seen them at a previous wedding.

41 

Our wedding day was the hottest late August bank holiday weekend on record! Everything went off on time thanks to our planner, Jennifer Louise Weddings and Helen Noble: Celebrant of Surrey, who made our day extra special.

One thing that made our day so memorable was having all our favourite people together in one place. We’re not sure we will ever get to experience something like that again, and it meant so much that people travelled from near and far to help us celebrate.

After having to postpone their wedding due to the pandemic, Paileen and Michael finally got to tie the knot in an intimate ceremony at The Grange Images courtesy of irockvisuals

REAL WEDDINGS

P

aileen and Michael met through a mutual friend. “We got to know each other, and I was really attracted to his ability to make everyone laugh and his caring nature,” says Paileen. “I had a feeling that he was interested in a relationship but wouldn’t make the first move, so I took the plunge and asked him out to dinner where we officially became a couple.” Michael proposed during his 50th birthday party. “He hired a venue and got caterers in to do the food,” shares the bride. “His mum even surprised us by travelling from Barbados without telling anyone she was coming! As if that wasn’t a big enough surprise, while Michael was doing his speech, he called me down to the front and started telling everyone that he been trying to get hold of his mum for the last few days to tell her something important. He then put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a ring and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We really liked The Grange in Wallington,” explains Paileen. “The inside and grounds looked great in photos, it was local to us, and there was ample free parking. We were planning to have our reception there, but due to COVID-19, we had to cancel. We’ve since re-booked the evening party for July 2021, so we can have a big celebration with our friends and family.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS Paileen chose a Morilee gown called Liberty from Aurora Bride. “As soon as I tried it on, I got the feeling it was the one,” says the bride. “I wanted to look like a princess, so I accessorised with diamanté earrings, a necklace, a bracelet and detailed shoes.” Michael opted for a charcoal grey blazer from Moss Bros with a cravat and purple pocket square. “My bridesmaids wore a Coast dress called Lori May,” shares Paileen. “We opted for a grape colour to tie in with our overall theme.”

RE-PLANNING “We had originally booked to get married and have our reception on 1st August, 2020, but due to the pandemic, we had to cancel,” recalls Paileen. “It was difficult finding a date where the venue and registrars were both available. After a very stressful month of not being able to book any of the dates we wanted, and finding out we would have to give notice again and possible re-pay the fees, we decided to have the ceremony at the next available date which happened to be 29th August, 2020. As time passed, we started to look at the positives of having a separate ceremony and reception, such as I get to wear my dress twice, I get to be pampered again and re-live the fun. We were upset about having to re-arrange everything as we had already sent out invites and received replies. We had to contact everyone to let them know it was cancelled, and due to the restricted numbers tell some people they wouldn’t be able to attend our new date. Luckily our friends and family understood that it was important to keep everyone safe.” Despite being unable to have the wedding they originally planned, the couple had the perfect day. “I would suggest to anyone that if you can get married with a few guests present, to definitely go ahead,” explains the bride. “It’s not worth stressing over trying to re-arrange everything, and remember if you do need to re-book over a year past the original date, then your notice of marriage won’t be valid.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “Even though it wasn’t a traditional celebration, we still felt the nerves and excitement on our wedding day,” shares Paileen. “It wasn’t exactly what we had imagined, but it was still very special. We both looked and felt amazing. We managed to get Michael’s mum to the UK despite the pandemic, and we had our closest friends and family there to celebrate with us. We had to have our first dance in the lounge, but it was just as lovely.” 47

REAL WEDDINGS

THE OF MY Amanda and Ian had a festive celebration at Stanhill Court Hotel Images courtesy of Sophie Ward Photography

A

manda and Ian met in April 2008 when she started working at Canon in Surrey. “We were friends for two years before we started dating,” says Amanda. “Our wedding day marked the anniversary of our first date. In my vows, I stated that I was so grateful to be standing in front of him about to become his wife and not cold in the snow outside the Toby Carvery in Redhill.” The bride was shocked when Ian popped the question. “Ian chose the 24th November, 2018, exactly six months after my birthday, so he knew I wouldn’t be expecting it,” shares Amanda. “My son, Joshua, had been plotting with Ian for a couple of months beforehand. We took a spur of the moment jaunt to London and

decided to go on the London Eye as it’s something that Josh and I had never done. As we approached the top, I noticed Josh nudging Ian and whispering to him. Ian reached into his pocket and began getting down on one knee. I realised what was going on and although I was super excited, having 20 other people in the pod totally freaked me out! Thankfully, Ian saw the funny side and was probably a little bit relieved that no one else noticed what had happened. It was a glorious moment for the three of us, and every time we see the London Eye, we look at each other and smile.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

were going to have a large ried on 31 July, 2021. We Ian and I planned to get mar out 2020, we realised that the as the world changed through wedding with 150 people, but set about looking for a venue we wanted to get married. I most important thing was that it was just perfect. I called e at Stanhill Court Hotel, and and found the Intimate Packag e there looking at the venue two ding coordinator, and we wer and spoke to Louise, the wed photos, and the high ceilings made the perfect backdrop for hours later! The entrance hall felt very grand. st

As the wedding was so much smaller than we had originally planned, I had a lot of fun with the finer details. Each guest had a favour box alongside a treat from Quintessential Cookies & Cakes. Each box contained marriage advice cards, personalised pens, a candle, shots, scratch cards, sweets and mints. There was also lapel pins for each guest as we donated to CLIC Sargent in memory of my younger brother, Phillip, who passed away in 2007.

Most of our favours had our date on, and I knew it was a risk, but it felt like we were throwing the date out into the universe to see the response. Failing that I would have needed a lot of Tipp-Ex!

We were very careful with the table plan. With so few guests, round tables were not an option and we knew it needed to be socially distanced. We had a sweetheart table at the top, two long tables down each side and another along the bottom. Everyone could see and hear each other, it almost felt like a large Christmas gathering, which after the year we experienced, was emotional in itself. 52

The cake was made up of three tiers and was covered in large sugar flowers to match our colour scheme. All the layers were vanilla sponge layered with seedless raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream. Jeannette’s Great Cakes coated it in white chocolate ganache and smooth white icing.

REAL WEDDINGS

Choosing a wedding dress during various lockd owns and tier restrictions is not an easy feat! I ordered several dresses to the point that my bedroom looked like my very own boutique! I knew I wanted a sheath dress with sleeves, but my main criteria was to be able to wear a normal bra! I decided on a Jayne Bridal gown from Raishma as I loved the fit, and it was very elegant. I paired it with a gorgeous pair of ivory shoes from Asos.

Ian and the groomsmen wore suits from Moss Bros with a dusky pink tie and floral pocket square. The groom and best man opted for Clarks shoes, and Josh wore tan versions from River Island.

We were initially concerned that being confin ed to one room for the entire day would be difficult, but the time flew by. We had origin ally planned to play some party games on the PlayStation 4, which Stanhill Court Hotel was happy to accommodate and provided a television in the room. Ultimately, we didn’ t need it as the day ran away from us, and we all just enjoyed being together.

My bridesmaid, Jo, provided me with a clip for my bouquet and a locket with a photo of my late brother. It was such a beautiful and thoughtful touch and symbolises everything that she means to me.

My bridesmaids chose dresses from Chi Chi London. They were originally for a summer wedding, so I paired them off with a chiffon bolero from Roman to make sure they didn’t get too cold. I was so lucky to be able to get such a good colour match with the dusky pink. I gifted them each a Tiffany hors eshoe necklace and found some similar earrings whi ch they both wore on the day.

Having Josh walk me down the aisle and seeing Ian standing there looking amazing was one of the best parts of the day. It was so nice to see all my family too. It has been so hard to spend time with each other this year that just being together was special. We did our own vows, and I was nervous about it until I looke d at Ian and said them only to him.

Everyone went above and beyond for us. The staff at Stanhill Court Hotel were amazing, the flowers from A&S Flower Studio were more beautiful than I could have imaged and Jeannette’s Great Cakes provided a stunning and delicious cake. Special thanks must go to Jo, she was my sanity, my clown and my calm not just on the day but in the weeks leading up to it!

Josh was very nervous about walking me down the aisle and the registrar, Molly, had a little chat with him beforehand. She explained that she was going to ask him if he was happy to share his mum with Ian during the service. My bridesmaid, Jo, actually offered him a tenner if he said no! Once we walked down the aisle, Molly explained to the congregation that the ceremony depended on the response given by Josh. She asked him, and we waited with baited breathe until he responded ‘of course’.

For our honeymoon, we had planned to go to Castle Cottage in West Sussex to stay in a treehouse for five nights. Un fortunately, due to tier four rest rict ions, this was no longer possible. We hope to go there when things return to some form of nor mality. Our first night there would have been whe n Stor m Bella hit, so that wou ld have been interesting!

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT FLOWERS

DANCE THE

NIGHT AWAY Music and entertainment options

K

eeping your guests entertained is one of the most important parts of any wedding. To help you find the perfect supplier, we’ve interviewed up some of the best music and entertainment companies in Surrey.

MEET ALICE FROM ENTERTAINMENT NATION 08005 300 035 | www.entertainment-nation.co.uk Q – Tell us about your company. We are experts in making your entertainment dreams become a reality. We have a roster of jaw-dropping musicians, who are all vetted, professional performers with the reviews to prove it. From contemporary pop bands and soul to Motown groups, jazz collectives and string quartets – we’ve got it all. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? Our dedicated advisers help pinpoint your vision, down to the number of vocalists you’d like, your chosen set times and the sound you’re after. Next, we’ll send through bands and musicians who not only suit your chosen style but are available and within your budget. We’ll help answer any questions you have and get your act booked in with a secure contract. All you need to worry about is having some comfy dancing shoes. Q – What packages do you offer? Our performers offer different packages and performances depending on the act. However, most bands will have a standard setlist of 2x60 or 3x40 minutes with options to add on extra sets for your ceremony and/or drinks reception. Alternatively, line-ups are also an option, adding more vocalists or even a sizzling horn selection. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? We’d always recommend booking at least a year to a year and a half in advance wherever possible, but the earlier, the better. It sounds obvious, but once an act is booked on your date, unless we can work out a way to clone them, they’re off the table. Another factor to consider is whether your wedding is on a peak date during the summer months. If so, these dates will go even more quickly. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Definitely the reviews! Hearing about our couples’ big days, how much they love their first dance being played live, the dancing and how it was the best night ever is priceless. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples? Don’t be afraid to know what you want. As exciting as it to watch every promotional video, check through every repertoire, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Once you’ve decided on a male or female vocalist, duo or band, let us do the leg work, and we’ll create a brilliant selection ready for you to choose from. 63

MEET GUY HASSELL FROM PRO-BANDS 07748 732 771 | www.pro-bands.com Q – Tell us about your company. Since 2015, Pro-Bands have been booking bands and helping to create unforgettable evenings for our clients. With a strong focus on energetic and exciting end-of-night entertainment, our fantastic line-up of bands deliver festivalworthy performances time and time again. We’ve grown almost entirely through word of mouth, recommendations and repeat bookings, and our small but mighty roster has steadily evolved to keep up with the growing demand. All of our acts are known and trusted by us and have either been hand-picked or developed by our in-house team. We can’t wait to get back to doing what we do best! Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? We take a hands-on, pro-active approach and go the extra mile for our clients. Where required, we’re more than happy to take the reins when it comes to organising logistics or additional services on behalf of our couples, whether that’s booking flights for the band or arranging the supply of audio or production equipment. We excel in making sure everything runs smoothly and have delivered this countless times for weddings around the world. We communicate and look after all those involved so that when showtime comes, everyone is relaxed, happy and ready to party. Q – What packages do you offer? Here at Pro-Bands, we tailor our services to each individual wedding and have a variety of packages and options on offer. From cool and classy acoustic sets in the afternoon, spine-tingling first dances to electrifying evening performances. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Most of our bands are booked six months to a year in advance. In a handful of cases, couples have actually changed their wedding date just to get the act that they’ve set their hearts on. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Obviously, we’re overjoyed at the positive feedback we’ve received from happy couples and love being part of their special day. We also take great pride in helping fellow musicians earn a sustainable living through live music. Giving the events of the last 12 months, we’re even more determined and passionate about what we do. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples? Our top tip for any couple searching for the right act is to check out the band’s live footage. Promotional music videos are a great selling point, but there really is nowhere to hide at a live gig. When someone in the audience is filming you on their iPhone, there are no second takes or overdubs – it’s real, pure and unedited, which for us, is the true seal of approval. If a band looks awesome, sounds amazing and gets guests are up dancing, then you can pretty much guarantee that they are well-rehearsed, confident and have quality equipment. 64

MEET EMMA BREWER FROM FIRST DANCE LTD 07966 513 981 | www.firstdancestudios.co.uk Q – Tell us about your company. First Dance Ltd is a company that helps couples with their first dance by putting them at ease and teaching them a great life skill. We can get you around the floor and stop that embarrassing swaying on the spot happening on the night. Traditionally the first dance is supposed to start the party off, and so we can help you create something lovely and natural or a complete showstopper. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? The main thing to expect is that it will be fun! It’s a lovely thing to do together and is a great escape from everyday life and the stresses of wedding planning. Q – What packages do you offer? We offer one-off lessons that are an hour-long where you will learn a few simple steps to put together on the night. It’s simple but very effective. Alternatively, couples can book our three one-hour sessions that are more structured. You will practice it in the studio and at home, and we guarantee that it will look wonderful on the night. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Ideally, we start the package four to six weeks before the wedding and one-off sessions one to two weeks before. We offer a free consultation over a cup of coffee where we will chat through how it all works, what you’re looking for, and it’s a chance for you to meet your teacher, see the dance studio and generally feel much more at ease about the whole thing. We put the lessons in our diaries at the consultation too. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part is seeing the progress from start to finish and seeing couples discover that they really enjoy dancing. I get quite emotional on the last lesson seeing the run-through, and I can’t wait to hear from them post-wedding to see how it all went. I love getting wedding pictures through afterwards and seeing them all dressed up and dancing away. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples? Have a good think about want dance you want on the night but be realistic about how much time you can spend focusing on it leading up to the wedding. If you can spend a bit of time each week practising, then it will be fantastic. Pick a song that you both like and don’t mind listening too as you’ll be hearing to it a lot! 67

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES

Our experts solve your problems

SUMMER DELIGHTS Q – What cake flavours would you suggest for a summer wedding?

ARRIVE IN STYLE

Your wedding day should be one of the most memorable days of your life, and your transport should make you feel like a celebrity. We’re finding that an increased number of couples are opting for classic Rolls Royces, which have that added wow factor and presence. When choosing a vehicle, it’s always advisable where possible to physically view your preferred car as website images aren’t always a true reflection of its condition. Try to book six to nine months in advance to avoid disappointment. A few questions you can ask your supplier are: ❤ What is provided within the service? ❤ Are the cars decorated with ribbons as part of the package? ❤ How long is the hire period? ❤ Are the drivers dressed in a chauffeur’s uniform? ❤ Are there any additional charges from the price quoted?

Keep it light and fresh. The classic vanilla sponge with seedless raspberry jam and vanilla bean buttercream is always very popular. Alternatively, you could switch up the fillings with a mango and passionfruit coulis and buttercream. Peach conserve and melba buttercream is also very delicate. Zesty lemon sponge layered with lemon curd and buttercream is always a hit, or you could add a twist with lemon and elderflower buttercream paired with blueberry conserve. For the chocoholics, a chocolate sponge layered with black cherry conserves and buttercream or salted caramel would be perfect.

DECORATED WITH LOVE Q – How we can incorporate flowers into our wedding décor?

There are so many ways that you can incorporate flowers beyond the traditional bridal party bouquets and buttonholes. Blooms can bring the whole theme together and provide beautiful accents to your wedding. Many couples choose to have a statement piece at the entrance to their venue, such as a floral arch or milk churns filled with flowers. You could also think about decorating any signage you’re using with garlands to tie in with your colour scheme. During the ceremony, a statement piece like a moongate or floral columns positioned behind where you say your vows look spectacular in photos, as do flowers down the aisle. Even on a small budget, you can use pew or chair ends to add a decorative element. Remember to also consider the registry table, as you will want this to look nice in the photographs. At your reception, table flowers instantly bring the room together and provide some interest for guests. You could also use blooms to tie in with other elements of your decor, such as on the cake table or bar. Depending on your venue, a fabulous hanging arrangement over the top table can add that wow factor to your big day. Your florist will be able to help you with all these things and give suggestions on what will work best in the space. If there’s something you love, don’t be scared to ask for it as we want you to have your dream day. Caroline Bates Florist www.hayloftfloral.co.uk 70

Here are the most important questions you should ask: ❤ What experience do they have, and how long has the company been going? ❤ Do they arrange the flowers themselves or subcontract them? ❤ Do they have a portfolio, reviews and letters of recommendation you can see? ❤ What flowers would they recommend for the time of year you’re getting married, and are there any that aren’t in season? ❤ Do they charge extra for vases and candelabra hire, or is the loan included? Do they collect any loaned items, or do you need to return them? ❤ Have they worked at your venue before, and do they deliver everything there? ❤ Do they have public liability insurance? ❤ Can you collect the bouquets the day before?

YOU’RE THE ONE

Q – My wife-to-be and I are thinking of hiring a celebrant, but there are so many to choose from. How do we find the right supplier for us? It’s a fantastic choice to have a celebrant as it means you’re able to create and bring your style to the heart of the day. The ceremony is the reason everyone is there, so it’s important to choose the right supplier. There will be a celebrant out there to suit everyone, so work out your style, energy or vibe. What feeling do you get from them? What’s their energy? Do you like their style? Will they come to your chosen venue? What is your biggest worry about the ceremony, and do you feel that they could resolve that issue for you? Do your other suppliers know them? Even though the wedding industry is huge, the networking is incredible, and if a celebrant is being supported by other suppliers, that’s always a good sign. There are directories out there you could look at, and venues may have their own recommended list. Above all, the best way to find a celebrant is to pick up the phone and call them and see how they are there and then. It’s all about live interaction. Of course, have a little noisy on their website and social media, but the most important thing is who they are as a person because that is what you’re hiring. Try video calling, a phone call or meeting in person, and you will know within moments if they’re the one for you. Helen Noble Celebrant www.helen-noble.co.uk

REGIONAL SHOOT

Fall in love with this romantic shoot at Bury Court Images courtesy of Paul Placitelli Photography

hen this shoot first landed in our inbox, we just knew our lovely readers would adore it. To find out more, we spoke to hair and make-up artist, Lucia Penman: “I reached out to local wedding suppliers in a bid to get creative during this difficult time. I wanted to create a boho, country-style theme, and despite some postponements along the way the collective vision was brought to life with design and styling from Lucy Wells Weddings & Events. Using the beautiful interior surroundings of Bury Court,

we wanted to create a feeling of intimate and relaxed elegance. Using Pantone’s colour of the year, rust, as initial inspiration we incorporated touches of copper alongside delicate floral arrangements and vintage furniture.” The flowers were provided by Hayloft Floral. “Caroline produced a beautiful selection of seasonal blooms including anemones, berries and scented eucalyptus with additional texture from natural grasses to create a relaxed and elegant look,” shares Lucia. “Love 73 

From Lila provided an eco-focused cake with two tiers decorated with natural foliage and To Have & To Hire Weddings & Events, and Vintage Prop Hire provided the vintage props. The tile name plates and napkin ties from Lulabelle & Moo pulled the look together and were accompanied by tableware from Crystal Hire. To showcase the versatility of the theme, we opted for two stationery sets. The smaller with copper edge finish was created by Tiggity Boo and the second by Cartalia.” The gorgeous dress was designed by Elena Morar and supplied by London Bride Couture. It was modelled by Charly Brennan with a selection of hair accessories and jewellery by PS With Love and hair and make-up by Lucia Penman. The photographer, Paul Placitelli, tells us: “The venue and décor have rich warm colours, so I planned the poses and scenes with natural, soft diffused light to maximise the concept, adding a burst of strobe lighting where needed to liven the ambience. It was great fun being able to get creative after being restricted for so long and to have the opportunity to show what small suppliers can do.”

No need for needles! CLEAN AND CLEAR

We all know about the barrage of environmental abuse our facial skin battles on a daily basis, but what about our scalps? They too are faced with the impact of sweat, pollution, and various styling products. Centred creative director Kieran Tudor says, “Good scalp health is crucial for strong, healthy, beautiful hair, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to hair care regimes.” A deeply nourishing blend of olive, argan and hemp oils, Centred En-Root Scalp Treatment replenishes moisture to dry brittle hair, while exfoliating the scalp and removing product build up and dead skin cells. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com

Self-tanning fave Skinny Tan has unveiled its latest product – Notox Beauty Elixir. It’s a smoothing, plumping facial serum specifically formulated to supply your skin with instant anti-aging effects and a glowing gradual selftan. Using stoechiol naturally derived from butterfly lavender, it immobilises wrinkles and re-densifies the epidermis leading to a rapid and lasting reduction in the depth of express lines. So, say “no” to Botox, and “yes” to Notox! Getting Zoom-ready and embracing the minimal make-up look has never been easier. Notox Beauty Elixir is available at www.skinnytan.co.uk, priced at £19.99.

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

PLANNING SOS

Q – There are so many make-up artists to choose from. How do I find the person that’s right for me? What’s your style? Are you a classic girl or more alternative? Do you want to experiment with your look or play it safe? Your look should enhance your features rather than making you look like a completely different person. Most brides want to go with what’s trending, and it’s very easily overdone. Think strong contouring and over-done brows! Remember, looks are only popular for a while, and then they go out of fashion. If you have any married friends, ask them for some advice. Did they love their make-up? Ask them about their suppliers, and would they recommend them? Were they reliable and easy to deal with? Recommendations account for so much and give the peace of mind that every bride needs. Amy Lacey | Make-up artist | www.amylacey.co.uk

HAIR CARE HERO

Q – I have thick shoulder-length hair. Do you have any ideas of how I could style it for my summer wedding? Shoulder-length hair is perfect for a summer wedding and is very adaptable depending on your style and theme. If your wedding is more of a relaxed boho affair, then wear your hair down with textured curls. It’s simple yet effective, and you could even add the wow factor with a flower crown or a pearl hair slide. Alternatively, if you’re looking for an up do, opt for a soft bun pulled away from your face with romantic curls. This will stay in place throughout the day, and you could even add a veil, tiara or slide. Brides-to-be think having thick tresses is a problem for their trial when in fact, hairdressers love it. The camera decreases the volume of your locks, so we have to make sure it’s big enough to still feature in your photos. Thick hair means we have more to play with and, therefore, more options. Kim Carey | Hair stylist | www.kimcareyhair.co.uk

FEELING FABULOUS

Q – How can I care for my hair in the run-up to my wedding to ensure I look fabulous on the day? Unsurprisingly, our hair needs the same care and attention as our skin does. It’s not a lover of cold winter days or excessive sun exposure. Adding serums and oils to your everyday routine is key to keeping your locks healthy no matter the season. Washing it too much can damage it, so depending on your hair type, twice a week should be enough. Avoid styling it to help improve its condition, and leave-in conditioners are a must. Nutrition and hydration should be included in our daily routine, and reconstruction with protein replacements are needed if your tresses are overly damaged. As soon as you have a date for your wedding, you should start thinking about the condition of your hair. Avoid washing it with hot water, keep it hydrated overnight by applying a serum, eat foods that are rich in natural oils, minerals and vitamins, and most importantly, cut down on the heat. Follow these simple but important steps, and your locks will thank you for it. Lucia Penman | Hair and make-up artist | www.luciapenman.co.uk

PLAN AHEAD

Q – How can I get my skin looking its best? Over time our skin gets a build-up of dead cells on the surface, but using an exfoliant will allow you to uncover the new smooth version underneath. Your make-up will sit so much better, and you’re less likely to experience patchy foundation. I recommend Pixi Glow Tonic. It’s a liquid exfoliant that you can use on a small cotton pad and apply to your face. It’s five per cent glycolic acid which acts as a great liquid exfoliant. It’s very important to make sure your skin is freshly cleansed before your make-up is applied. This will benefit your skin, and products such as primers can work to the best of their ability. Whether you have oily or dry skin, it’s important to ensure you’re hydrated. A quick way to add hydration is a tissue mask. I wouldn’t recommend doing this on the morning of the wedding as it might affect the make-up application, but the night before have a little pamper session. I like to use the Garnier SkinActive Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask. I suggest you try these before the big day to ensure you don’t have a reaction. Making sure your brows are well-groomed for your big day will make such a difference to your eyeshadow application. A little hair removal on the face can also help create a flawless finish. Many beauty therapists offer treatments which will give you that fresh look ready for your nuptials.

Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.

Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love

Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.

No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper. 90

Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on!

Retreat to ty the ci

Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital

A

s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.

STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a

whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.

EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike

that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.

EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
