REAL WEDDINGS
I S A L L A R OU N D
Rebekah and Jez quickly become inseparable and celebrated their love for one another at The Talbot Images courtesy of Photography by Michaelangelo
R
ebekah and Jez first laid eyes on each other at Reading University. “We were both studying biochemistry but didn’t meet until our third year,” says Rebekah. “We’ve been inseparable ever since, but just as friends for the first year. I liked his sense of humour and laid-back personality. Jez planned to make a move on the night of our graduation ball, but as the fireworks went off I was rushed to hospital with a burst appendix! It took nearly dying of septicaemia for me to realise that I loved him!” Jez asked Rebekah to marry him on Christmas morning in 2018. “He told me he had hidden a present and I needed to search for it,” shares the bride. “It took a while before I realised he’d slid a ring onto our cat’s collar who was following me around the flat! It was a surprise even though I had my suspicions.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
39
Krystyna, the wedding coordinator at The Talbot, was so welcoming and just as excited about our big day as we were. The venue was covered in gorgeous ivy, and the rustic barn and history of the inn reminded us of all our favourite places. Krystyna stood in the corner of the ceremony room with her phone held up in the air the whole time so that the 100+ people on Zoom could watch everything. She was a true professional!
We chose wildflowers to complement my bouquet in creams, lilacs and pinks from Ether Events.
For our favours, we gave our guests hot chocolate bundles with sweets and Yankee candles. Jez and I had a naked cake filled with lemon and chocolate and decorated with wildflowers from Speciality Cakes.
We decorated the venue with ivy and fairylights wrapped around the beams, wooden hearts and lanterns hanging from the ceiling. 40
Our place names were hand-written in a calligraphy style by my bridesmaid, Amber.
REAL WEDDINGS
I chose a gown called Susanna designed by Ellis Bridals from Victoria Elaine Bridal. It was so classic and elegant, and I fell in love with it right away. I accessorised with a real flower crown from Melissa McDonald Flowers, a pearl necklace from my great-grandmother and pearl drop earrings from my nan. I felt sick with nerves all morning, and when my dad saw me for the first time, he burst into tears. After the vows, I relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the day. My cheeks hurt from smiling so much!
My bridesmaid opted for a pink floor-length dress from Ted Baker. Jez chose a three-piece tails suit from Slater Menswear accompanied with an olive cravat and pearl green waistcoat.
Having so many people watch the ceremony over Zoom made us feel so supported. We realised how lovely it was to be with family again after months of lockdown, and it made us appreciate having our closest loved ones with us.
We weren’t able to have entertainment due to COVID-19, so instead, we created a personal Spotify playlist and had sparklers in the evening. Next year we plan to have a big party with a DJ and photo booth and all our friends and family. 41 ď ľ .
My dad brought in my baby book and read from it saying his speech was three pages long when in reality the font was sized at 50+ because his eyes are so bad! The best men, Jake and Aaron, gave fun speeches and we were all surprised.
We’re planning to spend two weeks in Croatia next summer, COVID-19 depending, as we love the mixture of history and beaches, plus we’ve never been abroad together!
My best friend, Amber, should have been a bridesmaid but couldn’t be there in person due to the 15 people limit, but she helped me so much for the day. She wrote a beautiful poem for me to read on the morning of the wedding and cheered along on Zoom during the ceremony.
My top tip for any couple is don’t let change stress you out! A lot is going on in the world that’s out of your control, but at the end of the day, you’re there to celebrate your love for one another.

ALL I NEED Penny-Jane and Samuel reorganised their wedding as a result of the pandemic and finally got to tie the knot at Wotton House

REAL WEDDINGS
P
enny-Jane and Samuel started messaging each other on a dating app in 2016. “We spoke constantly for around two weeks before meeting for our first date,” says Penny-Jane. “We went to Covent Garden in London and hit it off straight away.” Samuel asked Penny-Jane to be his wife in Las Vegas. “I surprised him by booking the trip as a Christmas present in 2018,” shares the bride. “On the evening of our third anniversary, we were in a special restaurant when he proposed. It was a complete surprise, and we couldn’t have been happier.”
SETTING THE SCENE “We originally had a different venue booked for our wedding pre-COVID-19,” explains Penny-Jane. “We had planned to have 65-day guests with an additional 40 in the evening but ended up pushing our date back several times until cancelling altogether as we’d given up hope. One day, I spontaneously messaged Samuel asking if we should go for it and we made arrangements for two weeks later. Samuel did all the research, and we decided to book the Holy Family Catholic Church for our ceremony and Wotton House for the reception.” “We were only allowed 13 guests, so we decided against a traditional table plan,” explains Penny-Jane. “For our place names, we chose gold laser cutouts that we ordered from Etsy.” Their big-day bake was made by the talented Jeannette’s Great Cakes. “We opted for a very plain semi-naked design,” shares Penny-Jane. “We finished the look with a beautiful cake-topper.” Penny-Jane and Samuel hired Flowers by Elaine to create their centrepieces. “We had one long table with all 15 of us, so we didn’t want anything too big blocking anyone’s view,” says the bride. “For my bouquet, the bridesmaids’ posies, the buttonholes and blooms for our mothers we contacted Wabana Flowers. We opted for an all-white design that looked wonderful. For the reception, we used Flowers by Elaine to create table flowers, floating candles, scattered rose petals on the floor and hanging decorations throughout the venue.” The happy couple hired a Mercedes from London Luxury Chauffeuring to transport the bride and her father to the church on the morning of the wedding.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS Penny-Jane chose a beautiful dress from the Bridal Rogue Gallery in London. “It was the 14th gown that I’d tried on, and I knew immediately it was the one,” says PennyJane. “I originally imagined myself in a fitted slinky dress, however after my daughter encouraged me to try on a princess-style I completely changed my mind. I wanted everything very plain and timeless, so I went to Swarovski the week before the wedding and purchased very subtle earrings and a thin diamanté bracelet.”

REAL WEDDINGS Samuel wore a dark blue suit from Hugo Boss with a pink tie to help him stand out from the groomsmen. “I was very laid back with my bridesmaids,” explains the bride. “When we had our big wedding planned I had four bridesmaids and four flowergirls who were going to wear either navy blue or pastel blue in their favourite style. Once we’d decided to go ahead with our small wedding, we had to cut down to two bridesmaids and two flowergirls which was the toughest decision to make. Again I told them they could wear what they like. They both stuck with the navy theme; one opted for a floral silk gown while the other wore a plain maxi-dress with lace detailing. They both looked stunning.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We hired The Surrey String Ensemble for our ceremony,” shares Penny-Jane. “They were breathtakingly beautiful, and I was so happy we still got to have them on our day. They played some classical music while the guests were waiting and Never Enough by Loren Allred as I walked down the aisle. We also had some well-known hits when we signed the register and left the church. They really made our day special.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I have never been so nervous in my life,” PennyJane shares. “No matter what I tried, I couldn’t calm down, but that feeling disappeared the second I walked down the aisle. Samuel was also nervous, and the best man messaged me saying he couldn’t get him off the toilet!” The couple’s nearest and dearest made their big day perfect. “Although we were only allowed limited guests our day was still special,” adds the bride. “It was lovely getting to spend quality time with each guest as well as each other. When our ceremony was finished, and the church doors opened, we saw a group of Samuel’s friends and their wives outside. They had all been pumpkin picking with their children and decided to surprise us by standing outside to congratulate us.” “All of our suppliers were phenomenal,” explains Penny-Jane. “We switched dates several times, then changed locations, and they were all so accommodating. The Surrey String Ensemble made our ceremony so special and our deacon, Tim, provided the most beautiful service. Considering we were limited to what we could do during our reception, the staff at Wotton House were outstanding, and we were able to have a beautiful wedding.”
HONEYMOON “We have funds saved for our honeymoon thanks to the money we saved by having a smaller wedding,” reveals Penny-Jane. “As soon as we can travel we plan to go on a very special trip.”

A bottle of champagne popped behind me and before I knew it, he was down on one knee in front of the whole restaurant who all cheered. I cried with joy, and it was just perfect.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS
T
iffany and Tom met on a cold night in October 2003. “We first laid eyes on each other in a nightclub in Reading,” says Tiffany. “Tom could see I was freezing while waiting to get served at the bar and offered me his jacket. A few drinks later and the rest is history! The weeks following were filled with romantic dates that Tom chose so thoughtfully. We realised we had so much in common and that our fields of work even overlapped. It didn’t take Tom long to make it official, and by Christmas, we were a couple very much in love. The next few years were filled with so many exciting memories, including moving into our first flat, visiting Switzerland, travelling South East Asia, buying our first house and getting our first dog. It became abundantly clear early on that this was the real deal.” Tom popped the question during a trip to Brownsea Island. “We were staying in the infamous Brownsea Castle, a place close to Tom’s heart as he had spent many summers there as a child,” shares the bride. “I’d always wanted to go, firstly to share this special place and secondly because what lady doesn’t want to stay in a castle on the beach? The proposal was a complete surprise, and an evening I’ll never forget. On the 8th August, 2017, we were finishing up dinner when Tom disappeared as I was tucking into my dessert. Shortly afterwards, I received a message asking me to meet him on the terrace where he was holding two glasses of champagne. As the sun started to set, Tom took me by the hand and led me along a candlelit beach. As we arrived at a secluded spot, he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. There was never an easier answer, and we spent the rest of our stay in a newly engaged bubble.”
SETTING THE SCENE “My wedding day was something I’d been dreaming about since I was a little girl and I knew I wanted to feel like a princess,” explains Tiffany. “As we pulled up to view Farnham Castle, we knew immediately it was the venue for us. We fell in love with every detail and couldn’t imagine a more perfect setting. The team also provided the catering, and it was the most amazing menu with a wonderful selection of wines. We decided on a white, gold and green theme to complement the beauty of the castle. Our theme started at the grand entrance where we had an abundance of green foliage with white, gold and sparkly touches.” “We gave our guests personalised wooden cutouts that we’d sprayed gold as favours,” shares Tiffany. “These doubled up as place names and looked great. We also hired Silhouette Sarah, who did a portrait of each guest during our drinks reception.” The couple’s wedding cake was provided by The Travelling Cupcake. “We had a semi-naked design that was four tiers, and made up of delicious flavours including salted caramel, lemon and Victoria sponge,” says the bride. “We had a ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ cake-topper and delicately placed flowers and greenery.” For their flowers, the couple chose a selection of soft white blooms with lots of greenery from Emma Curtis Flowers. “Our centrepieces were a selection of glass candelabras and tea lights surrounded by foliage,” adds Tiffany. “We decorated each chair with a white organza bow and used gold charger plates to frame each place setting. To finish the look, we create a table to display our guest book along with a Polaroid camera.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS Tiffany chose a dress by Diane Legrand called 30241. “I fell in love with it from the moment I put it on,” says Tiffany. “The satin 57

Cinderella dress was just perfect for our castle wedding, and I adored the low-cut illusion back. I was lucky enough to use my sister’s mantilla Cathedral-length veil from her wedding. The lace detail looked beautiful against the classic satin. I also wore my late grandmother’s pearls. It was so lovely to be able to use wonderful things for my something borrowed. In the evening, I got partyready by replacing my veil with a sparkling hair clip, Swarovski earrings and a necklace.” Tom opted for a fitted three-piece suit from Anthony Blay. “He stood out from the groomsmen with his houndstooth waistcoat and pocket watch,” explains the bride. “The groomsmen had matching outfits with gold waistcoats.” The bridesmaids wore full-length Sorella Vita dresses from Bride To Be. “They each picked a different style,” shares Tiffany. “We chose a mixture of colours and textured fabrics, including gold sequins and soft nudes.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We hired Silhouette Sarah who created an amazing portrait of each guest which doubled up as favours,” recalls Tiffany. “In the evening, we had a photo booth displayed on a wall in the great hall so our friends and family could laugh at those drunken snaps. We also indulged in a doughnut van that made fresh treats on-demand and a pizza oven for late-night snacks.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “It was the best day of our lives,” Tiffany shares. “I have honestly never been happier and didn’t stop smiling the whole day. To celebrate our love with all our friends and family was just so special and we wish we could do it all over again. Walking down the aisle and seeing my husband-to-be for the first time and his speech are two moments that we will never forget. We also treasured the moment of calm after the ceremony, where the two of us had a glass of bubbly and took in the magic of the day.” Tiffany and Tom’s wedding was full of memorable moments and fabulous suppliers. “I enjoy a pint, so the bartender let me sneak behind the bar and pull my own,” explains the bride. “The best man smashed his speech by doing a rap which had us all in stitches! The staff at Farnham Castle went above and beyond to make sure we had the very best day, which is an understatement. Nothing was too much to ask. The food was unbelievable, and all our guests commented on how amazing it was. One of our other favourite suppliers was the fresh doughnut van. It’s one of my weaknesses and was an absolute hit with our guests.”
HONEYMOON “We escaped to the Maldives for 10 days, which was absolute paradise,” reveals Tiffany. “Tom planned the whole trip and arranged a private beach villa with a hot tub. We were lucky enough to enjoy the most amazing meal at an underwater restaurant and indulge in a full body massage while looking down into the sea through a glass floor. It was a trip that we’ll never forget.” 59

our cake is a great way of tying together your chosen theme or colour scheme and is your chance to showcase your creative side. To help give you heaps of inspiration, we’ve interviewed some of the best local suppliers.
MEET JEANNETTE LAWRENCE FROM JEANNETTE’S GREAT CAKES 02084 012 149 | www.jeannettesgreatcakes.co.uk Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? Before becoming a full-time cake maker, I had an 18-year career in banking. Becoming a mum changed my priorities, and working from home began to make more sense. I’ve always enjoyed baking, from a young age with my grandmother and I started making my son’s birthday cakes and bakes for family occasions and the business developed from there. I had a private tutor who encouraged and gave me the confidence to transform my passion into a business, and Jeannette’s Great Cakes was born in 2009. In more recent years, my husband has joined the team, and it’s become a family effort. What should couples expect when booking your services? From the initial inquiry, couples should expect a professional service and a great rapport to ensure they are confident that they’re in great hands. I have a wealth of knowledge and have attended wedding fairs in many venues in Surrey. I’m recommended by Kingswood Golf and Country Club, Hartsfield Manor, Reigate Manor and the prestigious RAC Woodcote Park. What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why? This is a really difficult question to answer as every cake is as special as the next. I love making sugar flowers and when a wedding has a fun theme. How long before the wedding should couples book? I would always recommend booking six months before the big day, however, with most of 2020 weddings having been postponed and transferred to 2021, it’s essential to check availability as soon as your venue is booked. It’s a juggling act at the moment of being sympathetic, understanding and as flexible as possible. What’s your favourite part of the job? I always enjoy the face-to-face interaction, be it at a wedding fair or my home during consultations and the cake tasting. The design process is where the fun starts. I love hearing about a couple’s plans and especially about their theme. We use their chosen colours, invitations and even the wedding dress to complete the design. Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Research the cake makers previous designs on their website and social media. See if they have a particular speciality or if they are an excellent allrounder with plenty of experience. Look at Google reviews and your venue’s recommended suppliers. 63

MEET CLAIRE PRICE FROM THE POLKADOT CAKERY info@thepolkadotcakery.co.uk www.thepolkadotcakery.co.uk Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I’ve always had a passion for creativity, from art and textiles to photography and design. Having studied art and textiles at college, I spent several years doing ‘normal’ jobs, but the pull to do something more creative was always there. I qualified in cake making nearly 10 years ago and set up The Polkadot Cakery soon after. Having spent some time balancing baking with my day job, I finally took the plunge three years ago to purely focus on my business – and I haven’t looked back. The Polkadot Cakery is the perfect combination of my two passions; weddings and creative design. I love being involved in the process and using colours and textures in my creations. What should couples expect when booking your services? During our first meeting, couples will bring their ideas and any colours or design inspiration they may have. We discuss their budget considerations – and then I can get creative! Weddings are a reflection of personalities, and the cake choice is no different, so styles range from traditional white iced, naked cakes and buttercream, all the way through to cupcakes and brownie towers. How long before the wedding should couples book? Ideally, couples will contact me 12-18 months before their 64
wedding, but it can be less – availability will just depend on my diary. The process usually starts with a taster session – a selection of seasonal sponges and buttercreams can be sampled, where couples can decide on the flavour of their cake. Your big-day bake should always taste as amazing as it looks, so this is a really important part of the process. What’s your favourite part of the job? I’m very lucky to have been given creative licence on many of my weddings with a colour or flower as the sole inspiration. Coming up with designs and seeing the delight on the faces of my couples really is my favourite part of the job – that and seeing the cakes all set up on the day, while florists and caterers buzz around to bring the entire day together. Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? When looking for a cake maker, I’d recommend you do your research first and choose a designer whose range visually appeals to you – but I’d always encourage making a call and talking to someone. Relationships and trust are very important, so to know that your supplier understands what you’re looking for and can make your vision a reality is key.
MEET JO HARPER FROM THE JO HARPER CAKE COMPANY 07714 755 113 | www.thejoharpercakecompany.co.uk Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? When I left school, I did a catering course which included cake making and decorating. It sparked my interest, so I attended a few lessons at the local shop and got hooked. I took a job there and worked my way up until I was making wedding cakes daily. After a career break to have my three boys, I started making and decorating cakes for their birthdays, and the rest is history. What should couples expect when booking your services? I provide a professional and helpful service, giving you the confidence that your cake is in good hands. I’m extremely passionate and enthusiastic about my job, and I love bringing a couple’s vision to life. I pride myself with attention to detail, ensuring I can add to the wow factor to your big day. What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why? I can’t possibly choose one as it would be like picking a favourite child. I love them all. I adore the connections I’ve made with the lovely couples I work alongside. I fall in love with the design and when I have delivered the bake and set it up at the venue, stepping back to see it in its full glory in amongst all the carefully chosen decorations is so rewarding. Everyone is special to me for its own reasons.
How long before the wedding should couples book? As early as possible. Once you have your venue, your registrar (if you need one) and your florist, start looking. If you know the cake designer you want to work with, get your date secured as soon as possible. Most dates can be held with a small fee even if you’re unsure of the size or creation that you want.
CAKES
What’s your favourite part of the job? Making sugar flowers is most definitely my favourite part. Ever since I first discovered cake decorating, it always has been. I can sit for hours creating beautiful blooms to adorn my designs with, I find it so relaxing. Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? You must research designers to find one who will create a style you like. Follow them on social media and have a look at their websites. When you’ve found a supplier who fits your style, ask to have a consultation to make sure they’re a good fit. Do you have good communication with them? You need to trust the person you choose to make your cake and give you the peace of mind that they’ll create and deliver the very best on your special day.
What’s your favourite wedding that you’ve worked on and why? All of the creations I’ve made have been my favourites, but there are three, in particular, that stand out. In 2012, I received a phone call asking me to make a two-tiered Art Deco-themed cake at Cliveden House in Berkshire. Art Deco is one of my favourite styles, and the venue had always been a place I’d wanted to visit. The second was in 2015 when I was asked to make a Monopolythemed bake. It was a fun and quirky design and met the couple’s requirements perfectly. Lastly, I made a bake in December 2020. The couple chose a winter-themed fruit cake. This gave me the opportunity to create a magical yet subtle design. This was my second wedding during the pandemic, and there were moments when the wedding might have not taken placed as the second lockdown had just ended and restrictions eased.
MEET SHENAZ LAKE-THOMAS FROM LAKE THOMAS CAKES 02089 428 782 | www.ltcakes.co.uk Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? Back in the 2000s, I decided to take part in a few cake courses and started baking for friends and family while I continued learning. In 2007 I opened my business, Lake Thomas Cakes. In addition to making cakes, I also hold another job working for the civil service. What should couples expect when booking your services? I offer a professional but friendly service with a detailed consultation and communication throughout the planning process. I only use high-quality ingredients which is reflected in the cakes I produce.
How long before the wedding should couples book? Don’t leave it too long. Once you have your date and venue, begin researching your wedding cake and enquiring as good suppliers get booked up quickly. What’s your favourite part of the job? For me, it’s getting the wedding cake to the venue, making any lastminute touches and taking a final photo. Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Check the cake maker’s previous work and whether they’re able to make what you’re looking for and not what they want to create. Make sure get on with the supplier as you will be working closely with them throughout the planning process. Have a list of questions to ask them and set a realistic budget for your bake. 65

EXPERT ADVICE
WEDDING WORRIES
Our experts solve your problems
A PERFECT DAY Q – I’d love to wow our guests with an amazing first dance, but my partner isn’t so sure! How can we compromise and perform something that we’re both comfortable with?
There are lots of things you can do in this situation. Not all first dances have the wow factor, in fact, most couples that come to us just want to look natural, unchoreographed and comfortable on the dancefloor. The first thing you should do is choose your music and pick something that you both love. Next book a one-off lesson or a package where you will learn how to get around the dancefloor. It’s very hard to improvise when you have no dancing skills, so find someone to help you with the basics and take it from there. Chances are your partner who wasn’t sure will love it. After all, what’s better than dancing to a song you love with the person you love? Emma Brewer | First dance specialist | www.firstdancestudios.co.uk
PICK OF THE BUNCH
Q – We’re having a smaller celebration than originally planned because of the restrictions, but still want to make a statement with our flowers. How can we do this? Now that you’re having fewer guests, think about re-allocating some of your budget and having large flower displays to ensure the ceremony and reception spaces don’t look too empty. Use pedestals, table displays, pew ends, a pair of blossom trees or bay trees and a stunning floral arch. These items can then be moved into the reception room. Space out your friends and family and use guest tables to display the flowers. Tall arrangements will give a wow factor as you enter the room and you can finish the look with chair hoods, covers or sashes, fairy backdrops, ceiling drapes and garlands. LOVE OF MY LIFE
Q – How can a celebrant help us make the ceremony extra special?
David Long Photography
The beauty and advantage of a celebrant-led wedding can be seen when this opportunity is truly utilised. A celebrant is your supplier. You choose them. People often don’t realise you can choose the person to stand up with you on one of the most pivotal moments in your life. A celebrant is not a stranger in the room. You have handpicked them to suit your style, vibe, partnership and feel of the day. There is a supplier out there to suit everyone. We are creative, romantic wordsmiths and will bring so much to the table that the hard part will be working out what not to use! There are ring warming ceremonies, rose ceremonies and cocktail ceremonies – the list is endless. With so many rituals available I would say the main thing, for me, that I think is extra special is that you have freedom of speech. We make your ceremony 100 per cent you. We help you find the words you want to say and the way you want to say them. Marriage is about giving your word. It’s about a choice. A celebrant will enable you to say your words truthfully and beautifully with all your heart. Helen Noble | Celebrant | www.helen-noble.co.uk
67
Q – There are so many photographers to choose from. How do I decide who’s right for me? Most couples are already familiar with the style of photography they want for their wedding, whether it be formal or natural. Make sure you research your chosen supplier by checking their websites and social media pages and that their style is what you want on your day. If you have friends or colleagues that have used a particular photographer before, speak to them and ask about their experience. A recommendation speaks volumes. A great photographer will be passionate about their work and will want to achieve exceptional photographs for their clients. They’ll want their shots to be as unique as possible and won’t be afraid to push the boundaries of creativity to achieve the wow factor. They’ll also listen to their clients’ specifications and talk in-depth about what can be achieved. You should always be offered a pre-consultation with them before the big day. Experience is key, but ensure your photographer is keeping up-to-date with new skills and techniques and this is reflected in their work. Choose someone you like. Getting a great vibe from your chosen supplier is key. If you’re comfortable with them and trust their judgement, then this will only solidify your professional relationship, ensuring you feel relaxed and comfortable around them. They are, after all, capturing one of the most special days of your life.

FLORAL WONDERS
Q – My wife-to-be and I are going for a relaxed bohemian theme for our wedding, but don’t know where to start with our flowers – what would you suggest? Work with a floral designer whose approach reflects your ideas and influences. If you’re looking for a bohemian style wedding, go for a florist that offers bold, wild and rustic designs. Select a supplier that uses British flowers and foliage instead of mass-produced versions. This will give you a wonderful variety to choose from, providing you with highquality arrangements and a guaranteed fragrance that will set the tone and theme for your day. Although working with seasonal options may have limitations with availability, the joy in this is that there are so many alternatives. Your florist can introduce you to local blooms that are more likely to be available from a smaller number of suppliers, as they are easier to source, better quality and higher value. Suppliers that work with local companies will state this on their website and have a sustainable angle to their business. Kimberley Binns | Florist | www.gingerandwild.uk 68
ALL IN THE DETAIL
Q – What are the latest trends in wedding styling? Wedding trends come and go, but certain elements are timeless. Your wedding is about expressing your personality and style. One of the fastestgrowing trends we’ve seen and embraced ourselves is the bohemian style, which can also be called rustic-chic or dusty hues. It’s very laidback and dreamy with strong use of warm earthy tones, colours, pampas grass, dried plants, natural materials and wood or rattan furniture. This growing trend normally features rich colour combinations to bring some boldness to the wedding style. This type of styling creates a soft look and tone, giving the wedding a dreamy aura. Another trend is the application of statement lighting. This comes in different styles such as hanging lanterns, glass pendants, giant multi-sized chandeliers, exposed bulbs or clustered candle garlands. These can be placed indoors or outdoors, and when the lights are switched on, it’s a glorious scene that sets the tone of your wedding. If you want your wedding styling to be different, opt for something your guests haven’t seen before. Gabriella Olukoya | Wedding planner | www.aflairtoremember.co.uk

he Glasshouse is a new wedding and events venue in Surrey. The owner, Louisa, has lovingly restored The Glasshouse into an enchanting space just outside the village of Chiddingfold. Sarah Bunting, the creative director at What Peggy Did Next tells us: “We’re delighted to have been appointed as venue managers at The Glasshouse. We’ll be working closely with Louisa on marketing, building supplier relationships and, of course, hopefully bringing lots of clients along to enjoy the space. Q&A
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day
THE LATEST TRENDS
Q – I want to look on-trend on my big day. What’s popular in the world of hair and make-up? The funny thing about wedding hair and make-up is it’s timeless and rarely falls foul to trends. That being said styles do come and go, but your look should mostly be a reflection of your tastes. Make sure you look the most incredible that you ever have while still looking like you. For example, if you’re not one to wear a bold, bright lipstick or never wear your hair up, then your wedding day isn’t the day to try something new. As a bridal hair and make-up specialist, I work closely with all my brides to create a bespoke look that best represents you and complements everything about your look, from the dress and accessories to your flowers. If you always have a plait in your hair, then you should opt for one on your big day. If you love a dramatic smoky eye, we can create a bridal version with softer bronze and gold. You as a bride isn’t just you on a good day, it’s the most incredible and beautiful version of you that there has ever been.
FASHION QUEEN
Q – What mother-of-the-bride styles are going to be on trend in 2021?
Gemma Warburton Hair and make-up artist www.gemmalouisebridal.com
I believe the main trend for 2021 will be softer dressing. The current restrictions and limited numbers for weddings mean clothes are inclined to be less formal. More beautiful gowns are likely to be seen although the classic dress and jacket will always be in style to cover all weathers.
LOVE IS IN THE AIR
Dee Brain Mother-of-the-bride specialist www.serendipityfashions.co.uk
Q – My mum wants to find a gorgeous outfit for our Valentine’s Day-themed wedding. Do you have any suggestions? A Valentine’s Day theme brings to mind rich red flowers, bridesmaids’ dresses and accessories. If this is the main colour scheme for your wedding, I would suggest your mother wears something to complement instead of matching. A neutral hue such as oyster or gold would be subtle and not too overpowering since red is such a strong colour. If you were thinking of having your bridesmaids in something softer with red accents then your mother could choose red for herself. On the other hand if you’re thinking of choosing pink shades, either an outfit in pink or again in contrasting creams, golds or silvers would work really well. Melita Genziani Mother-of-the-bride specialist www.motherofthebridechobham.co.uk 92
A SMOOTH COMPLEXION
Q – How do I choose the right foundation to suit my skin type? The best place to try foundation is on the inside of your wrist, where the skin is the thinnest. If it matches, then the foundation should disappear into the skin, and if you can’t really see it colour wise, then it’s a good match. The texture is something else. If it feels light, smooth and creamy, then you know it won’t show on your face, giving you a lovely look that hides any blemishes. If however you need or want a heavier texture, then you need a slightly thicker foundation. Older ladies benefit from one of the many lifting foundations on the market. The best idea is to leave it to your professional artist, who will go through this with you at the trial stage. Linda Leonard Hair and make-up artist www.lindaleonardhairandmakeup.uk

HEAD TO THE EAST
Wilderness Reserve has launched its second country estate, Chapel Barn, just in time for the staycation boom whether you want to head away pre- or post-vows. The Chapel Barn (once a 15th-century farmstead) has all the charm of its heritage intact and yet comes with a host of luxury facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, cinema, gym and spa set over 5,000 magnificent acres of carefully maintained Suffolk countryside. Accommodation options range from the one-bed electricity-free Hovel, set by the lake, through to Chapel Barn itself, which comes with 18 en suite bedrooms. All seven properties may be rented individually and each building has been sensitively restored, employing the traditional methods of local artisans. Other highlights include Moat Cottage, painted in fetching Suffolk pink. It’s found atop its own hill, surrounded by water full of wildlife. Its hot tub and rowboat are both wonderful spots to take in 360° views of the Suffolk countryside and there’s space on its lawns for fun group activities. Chapel Barn channels the landscaping principles of Capability Brown: cattle and sheep graze the valley sides around the estate’s expansive lake and woodland, wild flower meadows inject colour in spring, while a traditional Suffolk apple orchard flourishes every autumn.
