Step into spring F

or me, spring is a wonderful time of year. I love seeing nature come alive again, and being able to go outside without it being dark is something I’ve truly missed. Although I adore Christmas (who doesn’t?) I’m not a fan of the winter months and am so glad we can finally say hello to spring! With a new season comes lots of wonderful real weddings, and I can’t wait to hear from those of you who are set to tie the knot in the next few months. As many of you know, my wedding is in July 2022, so we’re finally in the home stretch and counting down the days. We opted for a summer wedding, partly due to my disdain for the cold weather, but also because when we got engaged in 2020 we were in the middle of one of the many lockdowns and were unsure if we’d be able to get married anytime soon. We booked our venue for 18 months later, and here we are about to walk down the aisle and say ‘I do’. For those of you who are newly engaged, believe me when I tell you that your day will arrive in the blink of an eye! My number one piece of advice is to take your time and enjoy the planning process. In this issue, we reveal some of the best musicians, answer your hot topic questions and showcase the latest news from around Surrey. Remember, if you’ve recently celebrated your day or have been involved with a styled shoot, you can submit it at www.yoursurrey.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or email me at melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

First Dance Studios in Woking, Surrey, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. “Thank you to all of the 2000+ wonderful couples we’ve taught over the past 20 years,” says Emma Brewer from First Dance Studios. “Thank you for saying “we do” to the dance with us and trusting us. We’re very excited about the next 20 years. We’ve all found the past few years a struggle in many ways, so welcoming couples back onto the dancefloor has given us all so much joy, hope and happiness. For the next 20 years, we are actively growing due to popularity and have a team of teachers across Surrey, Sussex and London ready to lead you onto the dancefloor. We endeavour to come up with more fun first dances, more couple to crowd connections for a great party and more fun for those allimportant first steps as a couple during your first dance.” For further information, visit www.firstdancestudios.co.uk

ECO-FRIENDLY FASHION

Fuchsia’s Vintage Bridal Wear in Woking is a new business offering beautiful and elegant designs that are sustainable and kind to the planet. The owner, Forouzan Fard, tells us more: “I started this business because I wanted to do something constructive. How we treat our planet is important to me, and I love fashion, so I decided to combine my passion and love to create something that my children can be proud of, and so the idea of revamping pre-loved wedding dresses was born. To me, all the work that goes into making a wedding dress always seemed such a waste to be used once and then stored away, sometimes never to be seen for years! I’m always on the search for a dress that needs some magic added back into it, and I just love seeing the transformation of an almost new gown without a carbon footprint. Please do come and visit us in our studio, a Grade I listed building in the heart of Surrey, which will launch on 2nd April, 2022.” Visit www.fuchsiasvintagebridalwear.co.uk for more information.

MOMENTS THAT MATTER

RD Ceremonies, a new celebrant based in Surrey, is offering couples who book her services in April a free bottle of champagne. The owner, Rebecca Douglas, tells us more about her company: “I’ve always loved weddings, even as a little girl. Friends and family often told me I should become a celebrant when hearing me give readings. This started playing on my mind, and my passion for weddings, helping people and putting on a good show eventually encouraged me to start my own celebrant business. I like to work with my couples to tailor the ceremony to their wishes. Most of the traditions that people want to include in their wedding, for example, the vows, the rings and the first kiss are all ceremonial and not needed legally. Therefore in our consultations, you may decide that you want to replace the rings with hand-fasting, or you might be two families joining together and want to involve your children and choose to do a sand ceremony. There are also no restrictions on songs or readings and you can incorporate your beloved pet or favourite film. I will work with you to create your love story. It can be completely light-hearted or more traditional, but the words I write are written for you and will guarantee your ceremony is personal.” To find out more, visit www.rdceremonies.org.uk

SPARKLE AND SHINE

Twilights Entertainment in Haslemere, Surrey, has added a new sparkle fountain and dry ice dancefloor effect called Dancing on the Clouds to its offerings. As seen on Married on First Sight, it’s ideal for weddings, theatres and corporate launch parties and the dancefloor will create a spectacular photo opportunity during your first dance. The sparklers are safe to use indoors and can be turned off in an instant. For more than 20 years, the dynamic company has provided exciting wedding options to delight and mesmerise guests of all ages. KELLY ANDREWS REVIEWS THE MITRE

Arriving at The Mitre in East Molesey the façade, while perfectly charming, gives only the merest hint of what awaits you once you’ve set foot inside. The only thing that really hints at what a treat this place will be is its incredible location on the banks of the Thames at the foot of an elegant bridge, in the shadow of Hampton Court Palace. As I wound my way through this charming labyrinthian boutique hotel one of the things that impressed me most was the quality of the recent refurbishment, carried out during lockdowns. The interior designer has cleverly managed to achieve a seamless and harmonious blend of modern luxury with historical gravitas in a way that I can’t say I’ve encountered before. And the accommodation... wow! While discounted room rates are available for your nearest and dearest, the venue does offer exclusive use giving you and up to 72 guests run of the hotel, including all 36 bedrooms and suites. You and your loved ones will be in for a treat here when it comes to the wedding breakfast. Having visited the hotel’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie to sample a delicious three-course lunch of smoked mackerel pate, chargrilled beef, and dark chocolate fondant, I can report that every mouthful left me wanting more. The Orangery, which offers a Mediterranean vibe, can host up to 70 loved ones for the ‘I dos’ and wedding breakfast, with space for 120 evening guests. This also includes the use of the main terrace with its quintessentially English view overlooking the Thames, offering the perfect backdrop to your day. To find out more, check out www.mitrehamptoncourt.com 10

the garden area for their drinks reception and group photographs. One of the most popular spaces is the 15th-century Surrey Barn, boasting original beams, and a romantic atmosphere, the room can be used separately or in conjunction with the Wisley Suite, which is a selfcontained area with high ceilings and crystal chandeliers. WIN 12 BESPOKE CUPCAKES WITH PERSONALISED TOPPERS We’ve teamed up with Cherollas Cakes and Madhatter to offer one lucky reader 12 bespoke cupcakes with personalised cake toppers worth £90! We spoke to Cheryl Pryor, the owner of Cherollas Cakes, to find out more: “I started baking in 2012 as a hobby, and it wasn’t until 2020 that I started to get more involved and began offering a cake service. I’m based in Tadworth, Surrey, and offer bespoke cupcakes, celebration and wedding cakes, brownies, blondies, cookies, cookie pies and fully-loaded cheesecakes. I’ve been friends with Emma Gorman from Madhatter for years, and we decided, as we’re both like-minded, we wanted to offer our couples something glamorous and a bit different for their pre-wedding celebrations. We are the first to collaborate to offer bespoke cake toppers, and Emma is the only hat maker I know of in the area that works in this style, so it’s a fun new idea for both of us. Emma started Madhatter late last year after designing and making her friend’s 40th birthday hat. She offers bespoke and personalised celebration hats for brides for their hen parties and birthday celebrations. She can also create designs for baby showers and Christmas parties – the possibilities are endless.” Visit www.cherollascakes.com and www.instagram.com/madhxtterx to find out more and make sure to follow them both on social media to see their latest designs and competition information. 01306 730 000 | www.wottonhouse.co.uk Wotton House dates back to the 16th-century when it was sold by Henry Owen to the Evelyn family. John Evelyn, one of three sons of Richard Evelyn, was inspired by what he had discovered on his travels and constructed an Italian garden and temple, designed by his cousin, Captain George Evelyn, which was soon joined by a parterre garden complete with an Italian fountain. Since then, the estate has been passed through the Evelyn family, who have all been passionate about preserving John’s legacy, whilst adding their own touches to the estate. Guests are welcome to explore the 13 acres of gardens, which have been deemed worthy of protection and individually Grade II listed. Flowing peacefully through the estate is The River Tillingbourne, which had its own mill at one time. Historical splendour Horsley Towers has been one of managing editor Danielle Harvey’s bucket list of Surrey venues to visit; so she jumped at the chance to spend some time at this renowned wedding venue...

F

ew Surrey venues have quite the façade as that of exclusive-use wedding venue Horsley Towers. The widely used photography of the picturesque lake view with the towers in the background is simply enchanting, like something plucked straight from the pages of a fairytale. In real life, it’s the definition of breathtaking as the Towers slowly come in to view as you approach via the driveway and pull up alongside the lake, eager to enter the historical property to see what awaits inside. The ancestral home to the Lovelace family, the Towers were bought by Lord Lovelace from William Currie in the 1800s. Lord Lovelace added the iconic Italian tower, the clock tower and Great Hall, and commissioned the cloisters and beautiful chapel for his wife Ada Byron. Its historic significance and impressive backdrop has been recognised by TV and film crews featuring in popular Netflix drama The Crown, BBC’s Call the Midwife, and Disney’s Through the Looking Glass. Visitors will certainly not be disappointed as the interior is all that you would expect, equally complementing the exterior in charm and aesthetic. Sympathetically refurbished, it retains many of its historical features, with furnishings synonymous with the De Vere hotel brand.

32

LORDS AND LADIES OF THE MANOR Of course, the exterior of Horsley Towers is picture-perfect, but inside the Victorian mansion, couples really are spoilt for choice with standout rooms perfect for nuptials. History buffs will adore the authentic 19thcentury splendour of the Great Hall, which remains mainly untouched in its appearance boasting a beamed cantilever roof and trusses, oakpanelled walls, fireplace, and 150 coats of arms. The Minstrel’s Gallery also gives a sweeping bird’s eye view of the magnificent room and boasts a working organ. This traditional banqueting hall can host 110 loved ones for the ceremony and wedding breakfast. For those looking for a more elegant space with plenty of light and luxe furnishings, the Sopwith Suite is ideal. Still perfectly complementing the splendour of the Towers, this space is suitable for 120 guests for ceremonies and the wedding breakfast. When tying the knot here, there are three aptly named wedding breakfast packages, The Ada Byron, named after the daughter of the romantic poet Lord Byron who married Lord Lovelace; The Charles Barry the designer of the wonderful towers, and Lord Lovelace who bought

the towers and lived there in the 1800s. Even the most discerning of food critics can delight in the ample cuisine choice with meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options on offer. From delectable canapés to five-course sitdown set dinners, evening buffets, paellas and hog roasts, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite and there’s something else you’re looking for, you can discuss with the team of chefs bespoke dining options. Post-vows and dining, The Charles Barry Room sits alongside the Towers Bar making it ideal for evening receptions for up to 250 loved ones. And after a day of true pomp and splendour, where better to rest your head at night than in one of the 28 en suite rooms comprising of the bridal suite, junior suites, family rooms and deluxe rooms. All refurbished to a high standard with comfort and luxury in mind. What’s more, there are a further 180 rooms in Horsley Towers if you’re having a truly grand affair. EDITOR LOVES ❤ The cloisters and chapel – These breathtaking spaces provide the most romantic settings for photos and a quiet moment for the couple to spend quality time together. Consider a blessing in the chapel for a ceremony to remember. ❤ The grounds – There’s ample space to utilise for summer weddings including the terrace and croquet lawn. ❤ The all weekender option – Oh-so popular with modern couples, the venue offers dinner the night before, breakfast the following morning and a ‘girls night in’ package. ❤ The grooms room – Not many venues cater so attentively to the men too, and the Grooms Room will be a hit with the gents complete with pool table, TVs, fridges and more! ❤ The cosy snugs – There are ample chairs, sofas and facilities for loved ones to spend quality time together. ❤ Toastmaster Steve Eggleton’s history tour – Guests too can enjoy the history tour and Steve’s absolutely charming, his passion for the venue is infectious. ❤ The team! – There’s not one person that truly wasn’t a delight to deal with so you can rest assured your wedding day is in safe hands. Special mention to general manager Michael Micallef, duty manager Peter Roche, wedding coordinator Kate Bansgrove, Guita, and everyone else, thank you! We had bespoke tweed suits made for us by AD Clothing that included our burgundy colour scheme. We chose every detail of the jackets and waistcoats, and they were amazing.

During the day, we had a vineyard tour which everyone seemed to love. We also had pictures of the guests who attended the wedding on a display. In the evening, we had a DJ, photo booth and popcorn machine.

isa and Nick met online. “After talking via messenger for a few weeks, we decided to meet in person and hit it off right away,” says Lisa. “We discovered that we have a mutual love for music and similar interests. Our first date was in Wimbledon, and it went so well that we arranged to meet again that evening.” Nick proposed on Christmas morning. “He called me into the living room and got down on one knee in front of the Christmas tree,” shares the bride. “It was totally unexpected, and I was so surprised that it took me a while to register what was happening and answer him. I later found out that he had spoken to my mum and let our daughters in on, and they were there on Christmas morning to witness it.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 45

When we drove up to Woldingham Golf Club, we were impressed by the views and open space. It was very picturesque. We loved that it had a country house feel, and the staircase which led up to the ceremony room was stunning. The wedding spaces were bright and spacious, with doors that led out to a large balcony overlooking the golf course and surrounding hills.

I wanted the flowers to have a textured look, especially the bouquets. My florist, who was a friend, used memory lane roses, purple lisianthus and lilac freesias. For the flowergirls, I chose a gypsophila head garland and wicker hearts decorated with flowers for them to hold.

Our favours were heart-shaped chocolates in white boxes. We gave the children personalised boxes with sweets, a colouring book and a game inside. We both love music and going to live gigs, so we decided to use our favourite bands as table names.

Nick and I chose a three-tier buttercream design from Cakes by Bells. It consisted of chocolate, lemon and vanilla sponge. It was delicious, and our guests were asking for more in the days following the wedding. 46

We wanted to keep the decorations quite simple, so we opted for a garland on the staircase, organza bows on the Chivari chairs and topiary trees at the top table, along with a beautiful top table display. We also honoured my dad, who had sadly passed, with a memory sign on the chair he would have sat on along with a candle burning for other family members who are no longer with us.

REAL WEDDINGS

The dress I wore was from my friend Sara’s bridal boutique, Together Forever Brides. It was a soft fit-and-flare silhouette with delicate lace over a subtle layer of sequins. The colour of the dress was nude with an ivory lace overlay and delicate beading. The back was finished with satin buttons and a medium-length train. This was the last dress I tried on and as soon as I put it on Sara said my face lit up, and I knew it was the one.

We hired a Regent Landaulette from Premier Carriage Wedding Cars.

Nick looked very dapper in a navy three-piece suit from Hugo Boss. He chose a pink tie, matching pocket square and an engraved silver pocket watch that I had given him as a wedding gift. The groomsmen wore three-piece suits by Ted Baker, which were a different shade of navy.

Along with the expected nerves and excitement, I knew it was going to be an emotional day as my dad would not be there to give me away. I had decided to ask my mum, but in the week running up to the wedding, she was admitted to hospital and was unable to attend. This was heartbreaking for us both and made the day even harder, but I had great support from my aunt Debbie who was my maid-of-honour and my daughters Beth and Briony, who helped me get through it.

We had five bridesmaids, two flowergirls and one bridesman. The bridesmaids were of different ages, so I said that they could all choose what style they preferred and felt comfortable in but asked for it to be a mauve colour. The bridesman opted for a mink-coloured suit with a waistcoat and bow tie, which went well with the dresses. For our evening entertainment, we chose to book Mark Jordan from London and Surrey DJ. He was absolutely fantastic! The dancefloor was never empty, and we danced the night away, with many of our guests telling us how much they enjoyed it and how good they thought the DJ was. We discussed what we would like and he even did a remix of Duran Duran songs especially for me, which was great. 47

Seeing how beautiful my bridal party looked, having my uncle step in and walk me down the aisle, Nick’s reaction when he saw me and most importantly, our first kiss as husband and wife were all wonderful moments.

My brother gave the father-of-the-bride speech in place of my dad. He did a heartfelt and emotional speech that I was very proud of. Nick’s brother, who was the best man, had a mishap in the morning and lost his car keys. He had left his speech notes in the car, so he had to make it up, but he managed to still embarrass the groom. We also had an unexpected speech from my daughters that was funny and had everyone laughing.

I was so nervous I made a mistake when repeating my vows, which made everyone giggle.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, we decided to hold off on going abroad and booked a minimoon in the UK. We found a cosy little cottage in the Cotswolds and had a very enjoyable and relaxing five days. We have since booked a honeymoon in Zante.

Frankie and Holly tied the knot at Lythe Hill Hotel Images courtesy of The Kensington Photographer

REAL WEDDINGS

H

olly and Frankie first laid eyes on each other at university. “We met on our first night and have been inseparable ever since,” says Holly. “I proposed in April 2020. It was during the first lockdown when we were living at Frankie’s mums. I set up a cinema room in the dining room, complete with fairylights and her favourite snacks. After we had watched a movie together, I gave her a photo album of all our memories together. As Frankie neared the end of the album, I started unwrapping another present underneath the blanket. The final page said: ‘will you marry me?’. Frankie, of course, said ‘yes’. I proposed with her late grandmother’s ring, which Frankie’s mum had given me.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We first heard about Lythe Hill Hotel through our long-term friend, Amber Creber, who is the conference and banquet manager at the venue,” shares Holly. “After hearing Amber’s recommendation and doing a virtual tour, we knew it was perfect. The incredible grounds and groovy dancefloor were exactly what we were looking for. We fell in love when we got to visit a few months after booking.” The couple chose rainbow Cancer Research and British Heart Foundation badges as favours. “These charities are very dear to our hearts,” adds Holly. “We also had Polaroid cameras and cute forest animal masks for our guests to use.” “We chose a woodland theme,” explains Holly. “We incorporated this into our table plan with woodland animal drawings created by Half Pint Print. We named each table after a different animal, including bees, badgers and foxes. We chose not to use numbers as we didn’t want anyone to feel like they were on a table that was less important than any other.” Frankie and Holly chose beautiful autumnal blooms from Three Wild Flowers. “We had tall autumn trees as our centrepieces,” recalls Holly. “We also chose a neon light that said ‘happy ever after’, a giant tree above the top table, autumn leaves and pumpkins decorated by Frankie’s mum.” “Our cake from The Crumby Bakery was made of Victoria sponge and had Dipsy and Po from the Teletubbies as toppers,” reveals Holly. “The cupcakes were red velvet and gin and blackberry.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “We both wore Stella York dresses from Wedding Frox Bridal Boutique,” says Holly. “I went for an elegant minimalist design with a gorgeous veil and belt. Frankie chose a lacy number which she accessorised with a tiara that she borrowed from her godmother.” The bridesmaids chose burnt orange multiway dresses from Lá Closet Dé Chánel. “They accessorised with gold shoes and jewellery,” shares Holly. “One even oped for very cool gold boots!”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “To keep everyone entertained, we chose a Polaroid photo booth with forestthemed props,” adds Holly. “We also had Lythe Hill Hotel’s DJ provide music which everyone had fun dancing to.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I was calm on the morning of the wedding, and Frankie was nervous, but it’s usually the other way around,” explains Holly. “Once the music kicked in, and we walked down the aisle, her nerves melted away. Frankie walked first with her dad and bridesmaids, and I followed. We walked down the aisle to Stand By Me by Florence + The Machine and exited to You’re My Best Friend by Queen – a song we regularly sing to each other and our cat, Luna.”

The happy couple had a wonderful day. “Honestly everything was absolutely perfect,” recalls Holly. “For many, it was the first time that they’d met since lockdown, so being able to have all our friends and family there was just fantastic. The speeches were all so special. Both our fathers and maid-of-honours gave tear-jerking speeches. Another very special moment was when The Kensington Photographer took us down to the gazebo at night. Frankie’s sister and her boyfriend came down with us and were given the job of spraying smoke to create a cool effect. It was dark but so romantic by the beautiful lake.” “Frankie’s brother, aged 12 at the time, decided to be the bouncer on the door and kept asking for ID to re-enter,” laughs Holly. “He even tried to charge people to go to the toilet! He made £3 in total, and £2 of that was from the photographer! Frankie did try and say he didn’t have to pay, but he insisted that he admired Louis’s work ethic and that he had earned the money.” Frankie and Holly’s suppliers made their day. “The staff at Lythe Hill Hotel were incredible, and all our suppliers were amazing,” reveals Holly. “Every single person involved made our day perfect, and we couldn’t be more grateful. We loved every second.”

HONEYMOON “We went on a short break to Devon for a week after the wedding,” says Holly. “We loved wandering around Exeter and getting fish and chips in Sidmouth. We’re are planning to go away in May 2022 to Cyprus for Frankie’s 25th birthday.” 53

Not only did she do an amazing job on me and my bridesmaids’ hair, she made us feel at ease and it was a pleasure to have her there while we were getting ready in the morning. My hair looked amazing and I got so many compliments throughout the day, and the style stayed intact right through the day. lesha and Lucas met in Menorca. “We were both on family holidays,” says Elesha. “We met in a bar but didn’t really talk. Three years later, my friend and I had a day off college, and I put a post on Facebook asking if anyone wanted to come out with us. Lucas replied and came with his friend Liam. After that night, Lucas invited me to his friend’s party for the April bank holiday, and it all began there.” Lucas proposed in a restaurant on their 10 year anniversary. “We went to Junk Yard Golf and for a few drinks in London,” shares the bride. “We then went to a restaurant, and he popped the question. I was in complete shock and could not stop smiling for weeks.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

57

Our favours were glass jar

s filled with different drinks .

We had visited a couple of venues and liked the package, scenery and location of De Vere Selsdon Estate. We loved that the day could take place in one area and we could stay there before the wedding.

The centrepieces were a mixture of lanterns with flowers placed around the bottom and tall stands with floral arrangements on top.

Julies Bespoke Bakes with Lucas and I chose a three-tier cake from olate and Victoria sponge choc n, buttercream on the outside and lemo e. on the insid

-up letters and a dancefloor from To decorate the venue, we chose light photo booth from Pose Then Marvellous Glow Ltd, a candy cart and wall. Pout, a beer pong table and a doughnut 58

The table numbers were pictures of us when we were younger.

REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a dress from the Blue by Enzo ani collection, which I purchased from Brides Visited. I origi nally wanted long sleeves and lace detailing with a small puddle train . I wasn’t going to try on my dress as it wasn’t what I originally wan ted, but as soon as I put it on before the assistant had even tacked me in, I cried and said I had found the one. I accessorised with a full-l ength veil, simple hair clip and diamond stud earrings.

The bridesmaids wore dresses from Sistaglam. We chose a floorlength design that was off-the-shoulder with a sequin top and tulle bottom.

In the evening, we had a photo mirror, beer pong table, drinking game table, light-up dancefloor and MTA Events as our DJ. All our guests commented on the entert ainment and that it remind ed them of what we have at our home wh en people come round for drinks.

been rescheduled three times. We felt overly excited as our day had very organised and am a bit I was unusually calm considering I’m able to set up everything the OCD with the finer details. As we were g place, it meant our day went day before due to no other events takin , and we could enjoy smoother than I could have imagined every second.

59

The speeches were wonderful. I tried to make a speech but got a bit emotional. I then asked Lucas to take over from the section where I was thanking him for becoming my husband!

The staff at De Vere Selsdon Estate were amazing throughout the whole day and were on hand at all times. Our photographers, Bill and Theresa went above and beyond ensuring we had all the pictures we wanted, and Theresa even came to the rescue when I had a hair drama.

Our nephew Brody, one of the pageboys, was walking to the ceremony room and began crying as his shoes were hurting him. The toastmaster went in to ask his dad, Lucas’ brother, to come out and Lucas later told me that someone made a joke that he was being called as I had chosen the wrong brother. Brody then walked down the aisle with no shoes on as they could not find his trainers in time.

We haven’t had our main honeymoon yet but are planning to go on a Caribbean Cruise. We had a minimoon after the wedding where we went to Paris for a week, which was magical.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT FLOWERS

BOOGIE ALL NIGHT Meet local musicians and entertainers

W

I’m an award-winning choreographer based in Woking, Surrey. Twenty years ago, I found that many couples were floundering with how to look good on the dancefloor for their first dance. I started to teach couples and realised how much they enjoyed learning to dance and how much fun it was for them as well as for myself and my team. From teaching basic steps to full-on flash-mob-style routines, every couple has different needs for their big day. We love it so much that in many cases we end up being at the wedding itself. Over the years, we have been honoured to listen to each couple’s first dance music before everyone else. The ever-popular Michael Bublé, Sinatra and Ed Sheeran make great first dance choices. However, we’ve had everything from heavy metal, Persian folk music, French 70’s classics and even the Muppet’s Bohemian Rhapsody. In terms of choreography, it’s the best challenge. We have a list of song suggestions available for those that can’t quite make up their mind. With so many great songs out there, it can be overwhelming, which is why we always guide couples to choose what works for them. We’ve loved teaching couples steps, moves and combinations so they can feel confident in each other’s arms. The best part is watching a couple at the start of our very popular three-part package arrive nervous about what’s ahead and leave the last session wanting to bust out their moves. Seeing them grow in confidence, style and joy is our raison d’être. From tangos and jives to rumbas and sambas, we’ve taught all dance styles. At First Dance Studios, we’ve seen dance trends come and go, especially with the popularity of Strictly Come Dancing and TikTok. However, our favourite remains the dances that the couples elevate to the

MEET HARPIST MARK LEVIN

hello@weddingharpistmark.com www.weddingharpistmark.com

I’m a harpist with more than 14 years of experience playing a 29 string Celtic harp. Live credits range from St James’ Palace and The Dorchester to solo sets at Glastonbury and Latitude Festivals, as well as a Made In Chelsea celebrity wedding. I specialise in a contemporary style, arranging pop, rock and soul classics from the present day going back to the 50s and 60s. My sets are like a DJ set on the harp with the music mixing in and out of everything from Bob Marley, Michael Jackson and The Beatles to Kings Of Leon, Ed Sheeran and Adele. I’m happy to learn requests for your ceremony, and I can send video clips of my arrangements. I’ve played at weddings held in churches, hotels, castles, hip London clubs, as well as festival-style weddings in muddy fields. One thing that I’ve learnt is that no two weddings are ever the same. However you plan to have your day, I will do what I can to make it special with a personal performance for you. In one weekend in 2022, I'll be playing a Disney-themed wedding for a couple one day, followed by a ballroom-themed wedding the next day for a bride and groom who found each other in their 70s. The most unique wedding I ever played at was a church ceremony where the only guests attending were the couple, the vicar, myself and their pet dog who walked with the bride down the aisle. I stood as a witness as well as their harpist. During lockdown 2020, when live music was suspended, I came up with the idea of ‘Live On Your Drive’, which saw me perform surprise pop up harp concerts at the end of people’s driveways (all outdoor and at a safe social distance) to help people celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. This ended up taking off across Surrey and was picked up by the BBC and local press. Throughout lockdown, I played at more than 100 concerts and I still get enquiries about this now. As well as weddings and events, I also lead music sessions in children’s hospital wards during the week, performing live harp concerts for patients, families and NHS staff. I’m a resident harpist at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. I’m proud of this part of my work as I love that the music can help alleviate some stress and create a happy memory for people during a tough time in their lives.

I’ve been playing at weddings and events for more than 10 years. You will regularly see me in action playing during afternoon tea at The Waldorf Hotel in Covent Garden, where I’ve been the resident harpist since 2014. Scan to I’m accustomed to playing in different view video venues, from pubs and National Trust estates to marquees and five-star hotels across London. Whatever kind of wedding you’re planning, a harp can always fit in somewhere. I can play for your ceremony, your drinks reception and/or your wedding breakfast. The most popular choice is the ceremony and drinks package. This includes 15 minutes of music for your guests’ arrival before the ceremony, music for the bridal entrance, the signing of the register, the exit of the couple and up to 2x45-minute sets during the drinks reception. My repertoire has often been received with comments such as “wow, it’s 26 pages long”, “what an eclectic mix”, and “I can’t believe how many different songs and genres of music you play”. From classical to musicals, jazz standards, Disney, film music and pop spanning from the 50s to the present day, you name it – I probably have it. I’m constantly adding music to my list as I love to learn new songs. If there is something particular you might like, which isn’t on my list, then I’m happy to see if I can learn it for you. Your wedding day should be personal to you, so if there’s a special piece of music you want to hear, then that’s incredibly important. The harp adds sparkle and elegance with how it looks and sounds. I pride myself on creating the perfect atmosphere for your wedding day.

Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got

engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.

BRIDE’S DIARY

VENUE

PHOTOGRAPHER

❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.

❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.

FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.

WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 69

REGIONAL SHOOT

English Countryside This styled shoot at Wotton House combines English romanticism and elegance with American modernism and colour Images courtesy of Eleanor Stenner Photography

T

his styled shoot shows this couple’s international love story that started years ago and culminated at Wotton House in Dorking. “Bella and Hugo became pen pals through their schools,” says photographer Eleanor Stenner. “Bella grew up in California and Hugo, a little village on the outskirts of London. At age 15, they met in person on a high school exchange trip, and their relationship blossomed. They lost contact for a few years after that, until Hugo, now age 27, hunted Bella down. He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her and the bond they had developed during that time together. When they finally met again, even after all those years, the love had not gone away. Bella made the leap and moved to England to be with Hugo and Hugo proposed with his grandmother’s ring soon after. Their wedding was an intimate destination affair with just their nearest and dearest from both sides of the Atlantic in the English countryside. “Every detail of this wedding was chosen to represent a lovely blend of English romanticism and elegance with American modernism and colour. Seasonality and sustainability were also a hugely important part of the design process. With this wedding taking place in early winter, we wanted a colour palette and florals that represented that fact.”

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC:

Christopher Goldsack 2021

WEDDING WORRIES Our experts solve your problems

HELLO PETAL

I’m getting married next May and want to incorporate seasonal flowers into our décor. Do you have any ideas? There are a variety of flowers available in May – both seasonal and those on offer from importers. Tulips look lovely and are available in a wide range of colours. Ranunculus and roses, with their many layers of petals, are a standard choice for all weddings. Delicate flowers such as freesias, anemones, hyacinths, Lily of the valley and muscari also look wonderful. There are a host of other flowers which can be used with the above, including gypsophila, alstroemeria, carnations, eustoma, gerbera and solidago. The style, age, lighting and colours of your venue will be very important when discussing the types of table decorations and flowers for your wedding. For example, high ceilings look great with tall centrepieces, older venues may not look good with modern designs, and lower ceilings look nice with shorter displays. Make the most of any features in the venue, such as decorating a staircase with a flower garland or swags of organza and ribbons. For the top table and centrepieces, short vases with a selection of spring flowers and greenery in a natural style will create a seasonal feel. Tulips packed in tightly to form a ‘box’ is effective. Fishbowls can also be used with the flowers standing up out of the bowl in the centre. There are so many choices - talk to your florist to find your ideal style. TREASURED MEMORIES

We’re having a celebrant-led wedding and want to do something a bit different that will keep our guests talking. Do you have any suggestions? Each ceremony is as individual as the couple involved, so think about what you both what on the day. Here are a few suggestions: As the guests arrive, have your rings available, and ask them to take a moment to hold the rings and imbue them with their love and wishes for you. Remember to keep the rings in a small pouch and pick somebody reliable to keep an eye on them at all times! During the ceremony, a traditional handfasting is always a talking point. The celebrant talks everybody through the choices of colours, symbolising different qualities such as steadfastness, passion and honesty, and the couple can even say their vows while bound together. You could involve any children at the ceremony by having them bring up the ribbons/bindings/material one by one and presenting them. Another fun thing to do is create a selfie at the end of the service with your guests in the background – this may be something your photographer can help facilitate. Leading up to the ceremony, the celebrant can ask key guests to prepare a few words on what makes the couple special. You could even abandon the traditional seating arrangement and go for a semi-circle to create a more informal feel. Ask your celebrant if they have any ideas, and remember the only limit is your imagination. Janet Shell | Celebrant www.janetshell.co.uk

BELOVED PETS How can we incorporate our beloved pooch into our big day? Dogs are part of the family and play a huge part in our lives, so, understandably, in recent years, it has become increasingly popular for couples to have their dogs at their weddings. However, logistically it’s not always as straightforward to organise because everyone who would normally care for the dog would be preoccupied either getting ready for the big day or attending the wedding. Look for a dog chaperone service. Your dog can play as big or as small a part in your special day as you feel appropriate; whether that be meeting and greeting guests as they arrive, featuring in the pre or post-wedding photographs, walking down the aisle with the bridesmaids and pageboys or even being the ring bearer. There are many ideas, but you should find a trustworthy company so you can rest assured that your dog is taken care of so you and your guests can focus on having a fabulous time! Here at The Bow-Wow Co, we cover the Surrey Hills and surrounding areas into parts of West Sussex and Hampshire and have a variety of packages to suit all budgets and requirements.

REGAL BEAUTY

My hubby-to-be and I are having a Bridgerton-inspired wedding and would like to incorporate it into our styling. Do you have any ideas of how we can do this? All your style elements must work together when considering the theme for your wedding. To create a Bridgerton-style wedding, you need to ensure that you use only pastel colours such as regency blue, pale pink, gold and jewel. For the entrance to the venue, I would use a metal frame as an archway intertwined with foliage, roses, spray roses, larkspur, hydrangeas and trailing jasmine to create a stunning and sophisticated look. The wedding breakfast would benefit from large floral arrangements. Incorporate long tables with chiffon and silk table runners cascading onto the floor. Chiavari chairs with chiffon drapes would be an ideal choice that would create a graceful movement that would contrast well with silver candelabras with pastel colour floral arrangements. It’s important that you use only one of the solid pastel colours mentioned above for your linens at the venue and that the crockery is of the regency period style and in a harmonious hue. If this sounds like too much work, then search for a local wedding venue stylist. Not only will they be able to offer advice, but they can set up the venue for you. SEASONAL ROMANCE

What flowers are popular for spring weddings?

JUST ONE SLICE

Do you have any flavour and design suggestions for a spring-themed wedding cake? There are lots of options available, here are my suggestions: ❤ Fruits are popular decorations and flavours. ❤ Flowers in light colours with a pop of vibrance would look wonderful. ❤ Buttercream cakes usually feature fresh or edible blooms. Fresh berries with herbs such as rosemary and mint are also popular. ❤ Fresh or sugar flowers look great on fondant cakes. ❤ Citrus and berry flavours are classic choices for spring and summer weddings. Most cake makers will incorporate these flavours in some way, for example, in flavoured sponges, buttercreams, preserves or curds. Holly Bordon | Cake expert www.hollydollycakes.co.uk 82

Spring brides are blessed with beautiful blooms to choose from. Five of our favourites are: ❤ Daffodils are the quintessential spring flower! This trumpet-like bloom is available in shades of white, yellow, coral and orange. ❤ Nothing says spring like a big bunch of tulips. These versatile beauties are known for their distinct shape and vibrant colours. Heritage versions such as double tulips, parrot tulips, peony tulips or those with gorgeous frilly edges work well in bouquets, arrangements and buttonholes. ❤ Hyacinths have fragrant flowering bulbs that come in a wide variety of colours. Brides who would like blue flowers but want the real thing, not tinted blooms, should consider hyacinths. Its smaller cousin, muscari, is a great choice for buttonholes. ❤ Iris is made up of three outer petals, encapsulating three inner petals which stand upright. Available in purple, blue, yellow and white, it’s the inspiration for the fleur-de-lis symbol. ❤ Ranunculus has dense layers of paper-like petals. These romantic beauties come in lots of gorgeous colours, from bright and bold to soft pastel tones. No matter which wedding colours you’ve chosen, there will most likely be a ranunculus in a suitable shade! Monika Cruse | Florist www.flowersforflorists.co.uk

Recycling in the beauty industry is notoriously difficult, but here’s a clever invention by award-winning eco-pencil company Sprout World, designed not only to reduce waste, but to give something beautiful and useful back to the planet – recycling at its finest I have to say! Introducing Sprout Makeup Pencils (£9.95), the world’s first zero-waste plantable make-up pencils. Yep, plantable! CHILLED-OUT SKIN

Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese medicine and ayurvedic remedies to help mitigate the effects of stress on the body, and until recently have mostly been used in herbal supplements and teas to regulate stress levels. But they could also offer the solution to stressed-out skin. MARA Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque (£48) contains aswagandha, a skin-strengthening herb and adaptogen powered by antioxidants, which works to fight free radicals, boost hydration and soothe stressed-out, blemish-prone skin. Q&A Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

BACK TO BASICS

I don’t usually wear make-up and feel confused by the variety of products available. What are the basics I need to know?

www.kitmyersphotography.com

It can be daunting not knowing where to start with the amount of choice that’s out there, but here are a few helpful explanations of what’s available. Primers: These prep your skin to ensure a flawless and smooth base that will keep your make-up in place all day. Concealer and foundation: Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s good to have a liquid foundation or compact powder on hand to even out your skin tone. These come in many finishes from sheer to full coverage. Cream concealers are generally used to hide blemishes and under-eye circles. Mascara and eyeliner: Make your eyes pop with mascara to curl, lengthen, and add volume to your lashes. Use a soft kohl pencil to softly accent your eyes. Eyebrows: Your eyebrows are one of the most important features on your face. Shape, fill in, and define them with a pencil or simply groom and tame them with a clear gel. Bold and nude lipstick: No make-up bag is complete without a pair of versatile lip colours. A red, pink or similar bold shade along with a neutral shade that can take you from day to night or work for any occasion is a must-have. Brushes: The right tools are essential, and a few brushes along with a blending sponge and fingers are all you need. Blush, bronzer and highlighter: Give your complexion a touch of colour with a powder or cream blush and add a natural glow with a highlighter or bronzer (or both) depending on the look you prefer. If you lean towards minimal make-up, choose an illuminating powder instead. Eyeshadow Palette: A neutral eyeshadow palette will allow you to create a multitude of looks with ease. Some palettes even come with a double-ended brush. Amy Lacey | Hair and make-up artist www.amylacey.co.uk

It’s clinically proven to lift, contour, smooth lines and wrinkles, exfoliate and brighten your skin, leaving you looking and feeling more youthful. STEP INTO SPRING

What dress designers and styles should I look at for my spring wedding? Here at Wedding Frox, we love a spring wedding. It conjures up thoughts of new greenery, pops of colour, longer days and warmer weather. Your dress will depend on your individual style, but some amazing and diverse designers I would recommend you take a peek at are: Stella York, Madi Lane and Justin Alexander. Consider something offthe-shoulder, sleek and fitted to show your shape or slightly boho with lace detailing. Wearing a style with a soft drape down the top of the arm will add a lovely frame and softness to your neck and shoulders without making it feel too open. We always suggest that you prepare for the unexpected. Look at the ontrend denim or ivory suede wedding jackets to add a little warmth just in case you awake to poor weather or want to enjoy impromptu evening photos under the stars. Julie Aitken | Wedding dress expert www.weddingfrox.co.uk
