Where does the time go? I

t dawned on me a few weeks ago that this is my final issue before I become a married woman – it still feels weird saying that! Our July 2022 wedding is just around the corner, and I don’t know where the time has gone. I’ve just had my final dress fitting, my hair and make-up trial and confirmed all the lastminute details but I still feel like I’m forgetting something! My partner and I are planning to sit down together at the end of the month and iron out all the small details so we can spend the next few weeks relaxing. We were finally able to notice this month, which was a big relief. Our local registry office is still overwhelmed by the backlog caused by the pandemic and is only taking bookings for weddings three months in advance, so we’ve had to wait until now to book our appointment, but thankfully it all went well. If you’re due to tie the knot soon, keep checking your council’s website for availability, as appointments are hard to come by. This issue, to help you on your planning journey, we’ve put together showstopping features focusing on flowers and how to look your big-day best. We’re also looking at venues in Epsom, Elmbridge, Weybridge and Leatherhead, the latest fashion trends and must-see honeymoon destinations. You can submit your wedding or styled shoot via email at melissa.barker@kdeventsandpublishing.com or www.yoursurrey.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

FROM THE WORRY OF YOUR CEREMONY

to the wonder!

You think you are sorted, but then you realise you are walking into a room for the first time having had no rehearsal, you haven’t met the registrar, and you don’t know where you have to stand or what you have to say! Your anxiety is having a field day and you feel sick at the thought. STOP! There is another way. I can be the strength in the room for you - not the stranger. You can have total control over what I shall be saying AND you can write what you want to say! I will GIVE you a rehearsal so you know what to do, when and where! I will guide you, steer you away from the failure of a bland forgettable ceremony, and create a ceremony that stays with you and your guest forever - making your ceremony go from a worry, to wonderful! Feel empowered and inspired that you will own your ceremony, and it will be, like you, one of a kind. ARRIVE IN STYLE

Quintessentially British by nature and nestled in the picturesque Surrey Hills, Beaverbrook is the ideal spot to experience adventurous dining offerings, weddings, embrace regal-inspired activities, take a drive in iconic English cars, and soak up an English summer’s day. Presenting an exclusive summer experience, Beaverbrook has partnered with MOKE International to offer guests the chance to get behind the wheels of this iconic British car. Redesigned for the 21st century, the new electric model – the first of its kind in the UK – remains faithful to its classic look, whilst also integrating the most pertinent elements of today’s automotive technology. Two, Union Jack-themed, roadworthy MOKEs will take front and centre on the forecourt of The House where they will be available for private hire for overnight hotel residents. Guests will feel the summer breeze rush through their hair as they navigate the winding country roads, along picturesque driving routes of the Surrey Hills, in this reborn British classic. A 20-minute drive away is Newlands Corner, which boasts cinematic views over the Surrey Hills and is the perfect spot for a Beaverbrook picnic. Other scenic spots close by are Shere village, abrim with charming buildings, quaint tearooms, boutiques, and pubs, and Painshill Park, a beautifully landscaped park and also the filming location of Netflix's period-drama Bridgerton. Visit www.beaverbrook.co.uk for more information.

MOMENTS TO REMEMBER

Originally a Victorian country manor house, Stanhill Court Hotel is nestled within 35 acres of glorious gardens and woodland and is now a quintessentially English hotel that’s perfect for weddings. The family-run business is inviting newlyweds to plant a tree in the venue’s beautiful grounds. Sam Mellish, the events coordinator, tells us more: “The tree is a great way to honour your wedding day with a plaque made especially for you. On top of contributing to the environment, couples are planting something that will blossom as their love does, and they can come back to visit so they know they will always be a part of the hotel. We strive to help our wedding guests create life-long memories, so as a special gift from us, when you book one of our wedding packages, we will offer a complimentary onenight stay including breakfast on the bride and groom’s first wedding anniversary.” Check out www.stanhillcourthotel.co.uk for more information. 9

IN BLOOM

Flower Press Studios in Coulsdon, Surrey, has launched a range of new products. Vanessa Grzywacz tells us more: “I started Flower Press Studios in 2017 selling pressed-flower artworks made using flowers from my own garden. This has now progressed into bespoke pressed artwork commissions. I can draw an illustration of a wedding bouquet from the couple’s photographs/video as the flowers can’t always be pressed. These can be printed or supplied as digital high-resolution files which can then be printed or used on thank you cards after the wedding. It means the couple can have a memento of their day even if the flowers can’t be saved. I also offer gift vouchers which guests can use as a wedding gift or anniversary present for the happy couple.” Head over to www.flowerpressstudios.com for more information.

SUITED AND BOOTED

James The Tailor Limited in Fetcham, Surrey, is offering a free bespoke shirt worth £200 with every wedding suit purchase. The founder, James Shipton, tells us more: ”We pride ourselves on the best quality, fit and customer care. We will run through a detailed plan to ensure your garments are delivered on time and to the correct brief of style, fabric choice and wedding colour scheme. We can provide you with a bespoke suit that is traditionally cut from a pattern drafted from scratch or made to measure options are available. We offer a wide variety to choose from and work with some of the best cloth merchants in the world, including Dormeuil, Dugdales, Holland & Sherry, HFW and Loro Piana.” To find out more, visit www.jamesthetailor.co.uk

A THEME COME TRUE

Chair Cover Dreams, a venue stylist in Shepperton, is offering discounts on its Simplicity Package. This package includes chair covers and sashes or white vertical chiffon drops, glass cubes with white fresh roses and green foliage, mirror plates, scatter crystals, LED love letters with cabochon lights, top table floral arrangements and a flower wall for a maximum of 80 guests. Owner Maxine Cole tells us more: “I’ve worked in the industry for 12 years specialising in weddings and events in the UK, from the Ivy in London and marquees that seat 600 to celebrity weddings and smaller intimate affairs. We provide chair covers, table décor, venue styling, themes, centrepieces, focal points, draping, mood-lighting, interior design, and event management. We can provide fairytale weddings to masquerade balls. In 2005 I got hitched myself and loved every minute of designing my wedding and would love to share my expertise and ideas for your wedding, event or occasion.” For more information, visit www.chaircoverdreams.co.uk

WIN A DANCE LESSON WITH FIRST DANCE STUDIOS

www.andy-matheson.com

We’ve teamed up with First Dance Studios to offer one lucky reader a free dance lesson worth £55! Emma Brewer from First Dance Studios tells us: “Over the past 20 years we’ve taught more than 2,000 couples how to dance. We teach all over Surrey, Sussex and London and offer first dance lessons in our wonderful dance studio set in the beautiful wetlands of Woking. We have six teachers that help couples learn and perfect their dances. We love to create a routine and it’s such a joy to watch couples grow in confidence as the session progresses. We offer one-off lessons, packages, advice on the song choice, style and genre and how to make the dance work for you as a couple. From tangos and jives to rumbas and sambas, we’ve taught them all. We’ve seen dance trends come and go, especially with the popularity of Strictly Come Dancing and TikTok. However, our favourite remains the dances that the couples elevate to the next level in terms of personal significance. From teaching basic steps to full-on flash-mob-style routines, every couple has different needs for their big day. We love our jobs so much that in many cases we end up being at the wedding itself.” Please enter via our website. Terms and conditions apply. Visit www.firstdancestudios.co.uk for more information.

Meant to be REAL WEDDINGS

Linda and Geoffrey celebrated their big day surrounded by friends and family at Langshott Manor Images courtesy of Ron Read Photography

L

inda and Geoffrey met in a bar in Crawley. “I was waiting for a friend who hadn’t turned up and got talking to Geoffrey,” says Linda. “We soon discovered that we had both worked for the Surrey Fire Brigade, so we had lots in common. We chatted for a few hours, and before I knew it, the bar was closing! Since we hit it off, we decided to meet again.” Geoffrey proposed on Christmas Day. “I had been at work overnight,” shares the bride. “When I got home, there was a large vase of flowers on the table, and Geoffrey asked me to sit down. I wanted a coffee first, but when I did eventually sit, he got down on one knee and popped the question. I said ‘yes’, and he jumped up and popped the confetti balloons that were hanging above my head. The confetti went everywhere, and it took days to clean up!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 37

My daughter had brought Langshott Manor to my attention many years ago after she had been to a party there. When it came to arranging our wedding and a suitable date became available, we jumped at the chance. We knew the venue would be perfect, and Geoffrey agreed as he knew how much it meant to me.

Our centrepieces were large martini glasses filled with red, white and black flowers from Butterflies & Bows.

We had five round tables for guests and a long table for myself, Geoffrey, the best man and my son.

Large arrangements of flowers were placed on the top tables and around the venue.

Geoffrey and I chose a two-tier cake from Cakewalk Creations. It was decorated with white icing, gold edging and beautiful flowers.

We visited Langshott Manor for a food and wine evening to choose our menu, which was lovely. 38

REAL WEDDINGS

Geoffrey chose a black dinner suit, white dress shirt and red bow tie.

I wore a red flared dress with a black lace bodice decorated with little gems from Emma Tindley Wedding Dress Designer. I saw it on the internet and fell in love with it right away.

We had a harpist, Fiona Hosford, meet our guests until dinner was served. After the wedding breakfast, we had a disco and photo booth from KG Entertainments. Guests loved being able to choose the music in advance, and the DJ was very friendly and had a good rapport with our friends and family.

On the morning of the wedding, I was very calm and happy, but Geoffrey felt very nervous. My son’s speech had guests laughing and in tears. It was very touching.

The ceremony stood out the most for us. It was so funny, and everyone was laughing. Geoffrey was so nervous that he couldn’t say my name. He was stopped by the registrar on several occasions as he kept mispronouncing it. He then said ‘Louise’, which is my daughter’s name, to which the registrar laughed and said: ‘no you’re not marrying Linda’s daughter.’ Our guests and the registrars were in fits of laughter. 39

COUNTRY

Lisa and Jamie tied the knot with a nature-inspired wedding at Burrows Lea Country House Images courtesy of Jessica Grace Photography

42

REAL WEDDINGS

L

isa and Jamie first laid eyes on each other at work. “Jamie took over my role when I went on a sabbatical to go travelling,” says Lisa. “When I returned, we were working in the same team. We got on well and had the same sense of humour and interests. It did take a while for us to eventually pluck up the courage to admit we liked each other more than friends. Jamie asked me to go to the pub for our first date in the same village where we would have our wedding reception eight years later.” The couple bought their first home, and shortly after, Jamie proposed. “We had just celebrated our anniversary, and Jamie said he had a belated gift,” shares the bride. “The present was a pack of cards that said ‘10 things I love about you.’ As I read through them, I got to the last one, which said ‘will you marry me?’ Jamie then got down on one knee with the ring. It was a surprise in the sense that I thought it may have happened on our anniversary, but when that passed, I thought maybe it wasn’t happening that year. Jamie referred to the pack of cards in his speech on the wedding day, which was really touching.”

SETTING THE SCENE The happy couple tied the knot in a church. “It has sentimental value, so it was always a given that we would get married there,” explains Lisa. “For our reception, we chose Burrows Lea Country House. We loved the views, the country house, rose gardens, huge marquee and the staff. The team were so accommodating and made us feel at ease and we could go and look around the space as much as liked beforehand. At Burrows Lea Country House, you can really make the space your own as the marquee is a blank canvas, and there are lots of beautiful spots in the grounds to take photographs. It’s a hidden gem and I would recommend it to anyone.” “Our favours doubled up as place names,” recalls the bride. “We chose square photo frames with our guests’ names written in calligraphy on the glass.” The couple’s table plan was made from small cards that were pegged onto a brown board and surrounded by foliage. “The centrepieces were rustic bowls with white and peach blooms from Flowers by Rosie Orr,” reveals Lisa. “We used the same flowers in the bouquets.” Lisa and Jamie chose a three-tiered cake. “It was made by my bridesmaid, Lauren,” says the bride. “It was white with white chocolate drip, macaroons, roses and green leaves.” “We had green foliage garlands on the roof of the marquee, bows on the chairs, and milk churns with flower arrangements outside the bar and doorway to the church,” shares Lisa. “We also had giant balloons, beer pong and a Mr & Mrs pallet which had photos of us growing up attached.” For their catering, the couple hired Browns Kitchen. “We had a selection of canapés for our guests to enjoy,” explains the bride. “For our main, we had chicken supreme, seasonal greens and dauphinoise potatoes. The dessert was sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel sauce, ice cream and bowls of clotted cream. In the evening, we had bowls of macaroni cheese with a toppings station of pancetta, chilli oil, chilli flakes, truffle oil and parmesan, which was a huge hit with our friends and family.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore the Birch dress by Romantica of Devon,” recalls Lisa. “I always wanted something very classic and quickly found which style flattered my figure. The team at Brides Visited helped me make it my own by suggesting I add a hair band, which I never dreant of wearing before. I also removed the bow from the dress and added gems that matched the hair band. I had two veils, a long one for the ceremony and a shorter version for the reception. Jamie chose a classic navy suit from HIRE5 Menswear.” The bridesmaids opted for green dresses from Wedding Frox Bridal Boutique. “Three dresses were light sage, and two were a darker green,” reveals the bride. “They all have different figures, so it was really important to me that the girls felt comfortable and confident on the day.”

REAL WEDDINGS

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had a saxophonist called Sam Sax, who was amazing,” says Lisa. “She played more chilled music during the canapés and then came back for the evening disco. She came in with the saxophone during our first dance to signal for everyone to join, and she did three sets with our DJ, which everyone loved. The dancefloor was packed all night! Chris from CHESS Professional DJ was brilliant. He followed our brief of noughties classics even if it isn’t to everyone’s tastes. The beer pong was also very popular, especially by the end of the night! We also had a GIF photo booth from The Photo Booth Guys, which was touchscreen and people could take moving photos of themselves and send them directly to their email to put on social media.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt excited on the morning of the wedding,” shares the bride. “We had to move our day a few times due to the pandemic, so by that point we couldn’t believe the day had actually arrived. We didn’t feel nervous as we were just so glad we could get married and have all our friends and family with us. Everyone cheered when we were finally named husband and wife in the church. We were so pleased we did it, and having our loved ones there was amazing. We also loved having our dog, Hamish, make an appearance in the evening.” Lisa kissed Jamie at the wrong point in the ceremony. “The reverent hadn’t said ‘you may now kiss the bride’, so I thought he had forgotten to say it,” laughs Lisa. “Jamie also forgot the rings and had to drive home to get them! Jamie’s brother is in Australia and couldn’t come, so a cardboard cut out was made of him which found itself in various parts of the marquee, in photos and eventually ended up on the dancefloor.” “My dad’s speech was extra special as I knew he was very nervous, but he smashed it,” explains the bride. “Jamie’s brother did a recorded speech, which was played on the big screen in the evening. The amount of help we got from our nearest and dearest to decorate the marquee was incredible and we felt very loved.”

HONEYMOON “We went on a minimoon to Dormy House in the Cotswolds for three nights which was lovely,” reveals Lisa. “We are still planning to re-book our larger honeymoon in Italy.” 45

IN LOVE WITH

Katie and Terry had a lavender-themed wedding at Stanhill Court Hotel Images courtesy of Dorrington Photography

K

atie and Terry met at work. “I had just come back from travelling and applied for a temporary role in Sutton,” says Katie. “Terry was the manager recruiting for the role and at the interview, he offered me the job there and then! Although the role was meant to be temporary, I was fortunate enough to become a permanent member of the team. Terry and I got to know each other and realised how similar we are. As time went on, we got closer, and after a couple of years of working together we were both invited to a colleague’s wedding. We got on so well and had such a fantastic time that everyone naturally assumed we were a couple rather than work colleagues! Following the wedding, we carried on chatting outside of work hours, and eventually Terry asked me if I wanted to spend the afternoon with him in Burgess Hill and go for a nice country walk. This was the first date of many, and our relationship blossomed from there.” Terry popped the question on Katie’s birthday. “We had gone away to a little village in Hampshire for a few days,” shares the bride. “Terry had read on the hotel’s website that the grounds were meant to be quite pretty and knowing how much I love going for a wander, he thought it would be perfect. When we arrived, he kept suggesting going for a walk, but it was cold, and I kept saying no as I wanted to get ready for dinner. It turned out he had wanted to suss out the walk and see if there was a nice spot to propose, but I, of course, had no idea! On my birthday, Terry asked again if I wanted to go on this walk he had seen, so I agreed, again reluctant due to it being a bit chilly. I chatted to him until we came to a playground. I asked Terry if he could do a pull up, so off he went to prove to me he could. After a successful pull up, I decided to have a go. I stood under one of the bars and put my hand on it but realised a couple of the rings I usually wear were digging in. I took them off and asked Terry to hold them while I gave it a go. After a very embarrassing attempt, Terry and I laughed at my effort. I asked him if he still had my rings, and he said, ‘I suppose I ought to give you this one too.’ He pulled out a ring box and went down on one knee, and asked if I would marry him. I said ‘yes’ instantly!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 49

We looked at 21 venues in three weeks, and everyone kept telling me you’ll know it when you see it. Stanhill Court Hotel really stood out to us for so many reasons. It had the grandeur of a manor house but with a personal and private feel to it. It had recently been renovated from top to bottom, and it was a great combination of a traditional setting in a modern style. Jackie, the wedding coordinator, and her team sold it for us too. Jackie was always kind, caring and relaxed. She knew her stuff, was always on top of everything, and nothing was ever any stress. The team were just fantastic and always so attentive.

Our cake was a three-tier sponge from The Bakery Den. The bottom was chocolate orange, the midd le was vanilla, white chocolate and raspberry, and the top tier was coffee. The Bakery Den were incredible! We asked for the icing to be ombre to match our colour scheme, starting with a dark er purple at the bottom and getting lighter towards the top.

REAL WEDDINGS

Stanhill Court Hotel did our catering. They provided a great selection which catered for all dietary requirements and was absolutely delicious too.

My dress was an Allure Bridal design from Aurora Bride. The day I picked it, I had actually booked a follow-up appointment to try on and purchase a different dress , but it just didn’t feel right! The staff let me try on the gown that I’d liked at a previous appointment and it was just perfect!

The bridesmaids chose lavender floor -length chiffon dresses from Mix Bridal. The bust had lace on it and the buttons across the back added a nice bit of detail.

The groomsmen had navy suits with a subtle check and matching waistcoats from Dickies Suit Hire. Terry stood out as his waistcoat was light grey, and he even had purple socks to match the colour scheme. All of the groomsmen had buttonholes which were white roses with small purple flowers.

We didn’t have any entert ainment as such, howeve r, Stanhill Court Hotel provided various out door games, which some of our guests partook in after the cerem ony.

We loved our first dance. Neither of us had ever danced before in a ballroom style, so we decided at the very last minute to have dance lessons. We had an absolutely amazing dance teacher from All Steps First Dance who came to our hous e for three lessons across two weeks. We provided her with our first dance song and she choreographed a waltz for us. It was a little stressful at first, but it was one of the best experiences and one of our favourite memories from the day. We hadn’t told any of our family or guests that we were having dance lessons or doing a choreographed dance, so it was a real surprise for them all! It wen t perfectly, and we were so pleased with it – a few of our guests filmed it, and we love sitting and watching it back.

Our harpist, Fiona Hosford, is a very close friend of ours. Terry loves the program Murder, She Wrote, so before the ceremony, she played the theme tune. Terry knew it straight away and thanked Fiona in his speech for including it.

esmaids had to accompany me My dress was so big that all of my brid come with Terry and I to have everywhere I went. They even had to both remember trying to look our couple photos in the grounds. We chatting in the background lovingly at each other whilst they were nd us! about a goat that was in the field behi

We asked my maid-of-honour, Sally, to do a speech. She didn’t tell me, but she had written a poem abou t our friendship from when we were younger up until now, how I had met Terry and how our lives/ relationship had progressed as we had grown together and got to where we are now. It was the most touc hing and heartfelt way of doing her speech, and it’s one of my favourite memories of the day.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES Our experts solve your problems

TREND SETTER

www.andy-matheson.com

After providing dance lessons to more than 2,000 couples across 20 years, we get asked this question a lot. Our advice is simple, pick a tune that means something to you and be mindful that you will be hearing it a lot as you prepare for your big day. So what should you pick? Think about the words and how they make you feel. Do you want romantic, upbeat, slow, fast, happy, quirky, a tear-jerker or fun? Is there a song from your courting days that means something to you both? Is there a melody that you both love to dance to whenever you hear it? The genre is huge for wedding dances, and we encourage you to choose a track you actually like. This year we have seen a combination of traditional songs, including Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud, but also some lovely French options. Your venue, outfits, catering and style are special to you, so your first dance should reflect that. Emma Brewer www.firstdancestudios.co.uk

We’re trying to think of a song for our first dance but feel overwhelmed. What songs will be popular in 2022?

NATURAL POSES

I’m getting married soon, and am worried that I won’t be able to look natural in the photographs. Do you have any advice? Having your photo taken can be uncomfortable at the best of times, let alone when you want your pictures to be perfect. Building a relationship with your photographer is one of the best ways to overcome those nerves. Tell them what you like and don’t like and, most importantly, the kind of pictures you want them to achieve. If you have a pose or idea in mind, then discuss this with them. This all leads to more achievable results. Natural style photography is best captured when you’re being exactly that! Forget your photographer is there. They should encourage you to carry on as you are, walk and talk with your partner and let them capture that moment. Look at their portfolio. Their style will be able to reassure you that you’ve picked the right person. Eray Kaya www.irockvisuals.com

GETTING ORGANISED

What are the benefits of hiring a toastmaster?

A toastmaster will liaise with you and your events team throughout the planning process and can advise on etiquette and timings, guiding you through all of the options available to make your event as formal or as relaxed as you want it to be. On the day, they will liaise with the banqueting team, the photographers and any entertainers to knit your event together and ensure it runs on time. Your toastmaster will be on hand to provide a warm welcome and resolve any minor issues as they arise, freeing you completely to enjoy your occasion with your family, friends and guests. They should be trained to work across a whole spectrum of events, understand the associated cultural or religious differences, and provide a professional service for your day. John Griffiths 07368 945 630 55 

BEAUTIFUL MUSIC

My wife-to-be and I would love some live music at our drinks reception, but don’t want anything too intrusive as guests will want to chat and catch up. What would you suggest? Live music can bring a fantastic quality to a drinks reception and set the tone for the day. Any wedding pro will understand that what they play will be required to be in the background. This means that the volume and tone should be at a level that still allows for guests to chat and mingle easily, whilst enriching the atmosphere. I always have a discreet amp with me when playing at drink receptions, which allows me to adapt the volume to the space, and move the volume up and down as required during the set so it is always at an adequate level. Music can be a great ice breaker to help get guests chatting, especially as mingling at big events can be intimidating for some people. Even if some guests aren’t seemingly paying much attention whilst chatting, they always notice the drop in atmosphere when the music stops.

PERSONAL TOUCHES

We’ve just started wedding planning, and I’m slightly confused about what a celebrant does! Can you help?

FURRY COMPANION

What questions should we ask a dog chaperone service before booking? Here are some questions you should ask your potential supplier: ❤ Where are you based? What areas do you cover, and how far do you travel? ❤ What’s included on a typical wedding day? ❤ Do you offer a bespoke wedding day package that can be tailored specifically to my requirements? ❤ Can my dog wear a special attire/outfits on our wedding day? ❤ Do you offer grooming services? ❤ Will you assist the photographer/videographer on the day, so our pooch can be part of the photographs? ❤ Can you collect our dog on the morning of the wedding and chaperone to an agreed location afterwards? ❤ Will they get plenty of rest plus food and water breaks? Emma McGrotty www.facebook.com/thebowwowco.weddingdaydogs 56

It’s not uncommon to feel confused when planning a wedding as there are so many choices. The main part of the day should be the ceremony, without it you would just be having a big party. There are several options available when it comes to your service if a religious venue isn’t for you. A registrar, for example, will marry you in a licensed venue, but the ceremony is very prescriptive and doesn’t allow much opportunity for personalisation, and any content you wish to add is heavily restricted. This can prevent including elements from your culture which may be important to you or your family as any religious content is not allowed. This is where a celebrant comes in. With an independent celebrant you can get married anywhere (obviously permission is needed from the owner), including a forest, a theatre or onboard a plane. Your supplier will make the ceremony more personal and tailored to you and will be able to include any religious content. You can also include rituals, friends and family into your vows or even include your pet. There is much more freedom to make the ceremony about you. A celebrant ceremony isn’t legally binding, however, so you would be required to go to your local registry office to officially get married, but this is a small price to pay for the ceremony of your dreams. SUITED AND BOOTED

www.chrisblackledg

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

66

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 67

REGIONAL SHOOT

A touch of magic A team of local suppliers worked together to create this monochrome theme shoot at The Venue on Middle St. Images courtesy of Hiro Arts Photography

T

his contemporary styled shoot was designed to help inspire couples looking for a different wedding approach. Jenny from Juno The Wedding Concierge tells us more: “I took inspiration from one of 2022’s biggest trends; short wedding dresses paired with long clean veils. From the florals to the tablescape and stationery, the overall vibe was fun, bright and on-trend. We had a glitter bar provided by Buttercup Bus Vintage Campers, which created some fab photos, and doubled up as a photo booth. To continue the pink theme, we included bespoke cocktails from Bitter Sweet Bars paired with the couple’s initials in pink neon. “I wanted the shoot to have a modern and clean aesthetic with pops of pink as an accent colour. The overall colour scheme was monochrome, but by adding the pink it created an additional dimension to the theme. Monochrome provides a modern and clean feel and with the darker crockery it’s a slightly more unusual element and a move away from using the more standard white versions. “The Venue on Middle St. has multiple rooms where couples can hold their wedding, and I wanted the shoot to reflect how modern and unconventional the venue is. The short dress with long veil from Morgan Davies Bridal is very on point for 2022 onwards, with lots more brides choosing a shorter dress either for their whole day or as a change of outfit. It’s nice to show how it can be styled to stand out and be different!”

LOOKING YOUR FLOWERS BEST

How to look your big-day best

W

ith trends constantly changing and the added pressure of looking your best, we understand how overwhelming the wedding planning process can be. To help make things a bit easier, we’ve rounded up some top tips from local suppliers.

Square necklines “Similar to the wedding dress style and waistline, the neckline is definitely a defining element of a bride’s dress. Each neckline compliments in a different way depending on your body type, personality, and the silhouette of the gown. There are different types of necklines available, including halter, portrait, one shoulder, high and many more. However, the square neckline is becoming more and more popular among brides today. Square necklines are dramatic and romantic, with a renaissance feel to them. This neckline looks lovely on any bust size, as the clean lines help make the bodice feel secure whilst accentuating the shoulders and collarbones. Square necklines are usually included on gowns with straps or sleeves and are highly in fashion at the moment. “Another trend is square backs. These again accentuate a bride’s curves whilst revealing a respectable amount of skin allowing for a sexy yet elegant look. “We recommend wearing a statement necklace or your hair up with larger statement earrings to emphasise and highlight your clavicle. “Whether your chosen neckline is square or sweetheart, it doesn’t matter. Whatever you choose, the most important thing is that you are comfortable and love it!” The team at May & Grace Bridal Boutique www.mayandgracebridal.com

❤ Go against tradition with a coloured wedding dress or add a pastel tulle skirt over the top of your gown. This can then be removed later in the evening to create a completely different style. ❤ If you want a bespoke creation, take into consideration the time scale and money involved. Most bridal boutiques suggest you visit up to a year before your wedding, but if you’re after a tailored creation, it may be worth booking an appointment as soon as possible to ensure you get exactly what you’re looking for. ❤ At the start of your appointment, your consultant will ask about your ideas and plans for the big day. Be descriptive as this will help paint a picture of how you envisage your special day and don’t be afraid to ask questions. ❤ Dress to your tastes for the appointment. This will help the consultant recognise your style. ❤ It’s important you feel comfortable both physically and mentally on your big day. Think carefully about what shoes you’ll be wearing and remember you can still look on-trend in flats. ❤ The evening reception is the perfect time to relax and unwind, so if you’re worried about tripping on your veil, why not purchase two? Look for a shorter version that will transform your look. ❤ Separates are becoming really popular. It’s a great way of mixing and matching styles and is oh-so comfy. ❤ If you’re eco-conscious and want to cut back on your carbon footprint, shop locally. This means your dress won’t have travelled far, and it supports local companies. 83

The wow factor “When it comes to hair, several trends are popping up in 2022. The chignon is a classic yet simple and sweet hairstyle which fits most face shapes. The relaxed version is a little bit undone, with loose pieces framing your face, which adds even more to its appeal. It can also be created as a gorgeous braided top knot bun. Braids are still highly requested by my clients, especially those wanting a boho look. “Those with long hair will love the ponytail. You can jazz it up a bit and create something special. Try a half-up style, with the ponytail at the top half, and tie in a bow or a scarf for a relaxed look. “The latest wedding make-up is based on fashion week trends. We’re seeing red lips, black eyeliner, blue accents, metallic lustre, and glow highlighter. You can play around with these ideas and add a touch of glam easily. Alternatively, you could combine nude lips with shimmery eyes as glitter is another huge trend for 2022. However, if this isn’t your thing, then nude lips along with a sultry eye and fresh dewy skin are still on point.” Amy Lacey www.amylacey.co.uk

Trend predictions

“My prediction for 2022 is that anything goes! You can be as flamboyant as you wish or keep it simple yet elegant. One thing is for sure, all designers are paying a lot more attention to being eco-friendly and sustainable. Here at Fuchsia’s Vintage Bridal Wear, we offer sustainable, vintage gowns that look breathtakingly beautiful.” Forouzan Fard www.fuchsiasvintagebridalwear.co.uk 84

LOOKING YOUR FLOWERS BEST

Hair care hero

It can be stressful trying to decide on a hairstyle, especially since there are so many beautiful options out there. To help we’ve come up with a list of hairstyles that match different necklines.

V-neck

The focus of a V-neck dress is on the shape the neckline creates, so avoid detracting from that with any dramatic jewellery. If you have naturally curly hair, why not embrace that? Alternatively, a braided up do or sleek low ponytail are popular trends for 2022.

Sweetheart

A sweetheart neckline can be styled in a variety of ways. Since there isn’t much detail around your shoulders, you could opt for the oh-so-popular Hollywood waves, which look particularly good with a boho or beach wedding. Alternatively, a half up and half down look or low bun is becoming more popular.

Suit

If you’ve decided against a traditional wedding dress and are opting for a suit or two-piece, there are several ways you can style your hair. Soft, flowing waves with a flower crown or a sleek ponytail accessorised with a pop of colour are sure to grab your guests’ attention. Alternatively, if you have short hair, add a bit of volume and curls.

Low back

Off-theshoulder

It’s important to highlight your beautiful shoulders in an off-the-shoulder gown, so why not look for a low bun or soft romantic waves?

High neck

Dresses with low backs are becoming more popular in 2022. This gorgeous look can be styled in a variety of ways but we’re seeing more up dos, dramatic waves and sleek ponytails.

If your dress has a high or halter neckline, avoid having your hair down as it may detract from the gown’s beauty. Instead, look at low ponytails or soft up dos.

High back

Short hair can be left up or down with a high back dress without detracting from its design. If you have long locks, try an up do so you can still see the back of the gown. 87

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

MADE WITH LOVE

I’m thinking of hiring my wedding dress. What are the benefits, and how does the process work?

Sue Marley www.ivorybelleweddingdresshire.com www.leothephotographer.co.uk

Firstly, congratulations! The benefits of hiring your dress are huge, especially for reducing your impact on the planet. I can’t speak for other companies, but here at Ivory Belle we offer a range of beautiful designer gowns in perfect condition, which retail up to £2,000. There is a minimum four day hire with day rates starting from as little as £80 per day. We take a security deposit until the dress is returned, and depending on any soiling/damage incurred during the hire, this will be refunded in full. We

also hire veils, tiaras and other accessories to complete your look. We want to make your dress fitting as special as possible. We offer you our full attention and assist you in creating your perfect look for your wedding day. Family members are welcome to accompany you and cream tea and Prosecco will be provided for you and your guests during the consultation and fitting.

ULTIMATE RELAXATION

My daughter and I want to have a relaxing treatment in the runup to the wedding. Do you have any suggestions? Here at The Practice Beauty Clinic, we are renowned for our beautifully bespoke and relaxing facials and massages. We use aromatherapy products from the Eve Taylor range, allowing you to capture a moment of true relaxation and leaving you with refreshed and glowing skin. I always recommend the Glow & Massage facial in the run-up to a wedding. This is a luxurious treatment that’s designed for an extra skin 88

boost by thoroughly deep cleansing and exfoliating the skin with an added neck and decollete massage. If your daughter is on the younger side, then a teen facial is the perfect option to help get her involved and promote good skincare habits. Dr Saba Khan www.practicebeautyclinic.co.uk

SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

Nobu Hotel and Restaurant is a new property in Santorini that will open its doors in spring 2022. The restaurant houses a gastronomic experience, serving signature Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine, and the signature twolevel infinity pool offers unobstructed views of the island’s famed sunset. The luxurious rooms and villas with private pools become a haven, offering panoramic views of the impressive Caldera and the Aegean Sea. The gym, along with the fully-equipped spa room, encapsulates an oasis of wellness. Dimos Stasinopoulos, the CEO and founder of Epoque Collection, tells us: “We’re beyond excited to have an active role in the creation of the first Nobu Hotel and Restaurant in Greece, on the island of Santorini. Our cooperation with MonteRock International, a group with an international presence in the business and hospitality sector, guarantees that this project carves a new path in the way boutique hotels are perceived domestically. Hotels will not only be singled out due to brand’s name but also for its design, location, landscape, and service.” Check out www.nobuhotels.com for more information.

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to

the forest

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

E

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
