Before I tied the knot, several of my friends warned me about the wedding blues – the feeling of sadness once the big day is over. It’s a strange feeling when something you’ve been planning for months or sometimes even years is over in the blink of an eye. To help avoid this, my hubby and I jetted off on our honeymoon to Greece a few days after the wedding. It was wonderful getting to spend quality time with each other, relaxing on the beach and exploring the sights. Having this time together meant we didn’t really feel a sense of sadness that the day was over and it extended our wedding bubble a little bit longer.

If you’re stuck for travel ideas, we have a must-see honeymoon section focusing on gorgeous properties in the UK and abroad. Also, in this issue, we reveal the latest outfit choices for the wedding party, showcase work from local photographers and highlight some of the best venues in Kingston and Richmond. What’s more, we have three real weddings to help inspire you.

If you’d like your wedding featured in the magazine or have been involved with a styled shoot, you can submit it at www.yoursurrey.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

GET ME TO THE CHURCH

Surrey and Sussex Trikes is a new business set up in August 2021 by Martin Ordish and his partner Debbie. Martin tells us: “We both have a background in the NHS, but I decided to leave to pursue my dream of running a trike company as I knew how amazing these machines were. It gives you the comfort of a car with the freedom of a motorbike. What’s not to like?

“We purchased Ike the Trike from a UK dealer, the trike is custom-made by a German company called Rewaco. It’s comfortable with seatbelts and individuallyheated seats.

“We undertake weddings, civil ceremonies and funerals if asked. We’re currently expanding to do tours of Surrey, Sussex and the home counties, although we can operate anywhere in the UK. There are very few other companies providing a tour service, but I believe we’re the only one specialising in weddings.”

Ryan Cox Photography, who has been capturing weddings for more than 20 years, has recently moved to Surrey. We spoke to Ryan to find out more about his business: “I had an established wedding and portrait business in the South East of Kent until I moved to Cranleigh, Surrey, following my partner starting a new job. I still travel back to Kent for weddings as I’m continually recommended via word of mouth, but I travel throughout the UK and globally for my work, so being more central than I was before is a big positive for me.

“My work is a documentary style, but I’m always looking to create a fashionable, contemporary style when the opportunity arises. I work closely with my couples to create timeless images and stay away from fad editing, which will outdate very quickly. I always provide my couples with a full set of colour and black and white images, so they have a choice to suit their preferences.”

FLY AWAY WITH ME

As demand for holidays around the world returns, luxury travel firm Kuoni has returned to Guildford’s High Street after a two-year closure. The store, which opened in October 2011, is in a prime location on the cobbled high street, but has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic when international travel was shut down.

Honeymoons and other trips to celebrate special occasions are in demand, according to store manager, Samantha Young. She tells us: “There’s clear space in the Guildford market for us to thrive again, and we’re already seeing appointment bookings for people who want to come in and talk to us about their next big trip. We’re all about the human touch, giving real advice, helping people with their travel plans and making sure that we look after people from the time they book to arriving back home. The past two years has reminded people that if anything happens in the world, they want real travel experts to talk to who can help amend their plans and that’s something you can’t get online.”

The owner, Tony Allen, put his teenage passion for collecting classic motor vehicles to good use by lending his cars to friends for their weddings. We maintain many fine examples of iconic Rolls Royces, including the Silver Wraith, Phantom II & VI, Silver Dawn and Silver Cloud, along with Bentleys, Jaguars, Daimlers and a selection of classic American cars, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Mercury.

Ciara and Sonny celebrated their big day at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club with a green, cream and white colour scheme

Images courtesy of HayleyB Weddings

Ciara and Sonny have known each other since they were children. “I went to school with Sonny’s sister,” says Ciara. “Later in life, we bumped into each other, and there was an instant spark. I was attracted to Sonny’s good looks, sense of humour and chivalrous manners.”

Sonny surprised Ciara by proposing on Christmas Day in 2017. “I had been quite picky about never being proposed to on a special occasion, so the fact it came on Christmas Day made it all the more surprising,” shares the bride. “My favourite film is Love Actually, and even after seeing it a million times, I never get bored, so Sonny decided to reenact the scene where Keira Knightley opens the door and has a declaration of love held up to her on big whiteboards. Sonny had our daughter help and it didn’t click until about the third page what was happening, but I said yes!”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

37 REAL WEDDINGS

The grounds at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club are just beautiful. We loved that we had the freedom to create the day we wanted using our own suppliers and ideas. Marian and Kim from Hampton Court Palace Golf Club worked so hard to make sure everything went smoothly and helped us plan the day to perfection. We wouldn’t have changed a thing!

For our favours, we gave our guests scratch cards and a lucky penny which doubled up as place names.

We hired traditional London buses from Rent A Routemaster to take our guests from St. Matthias Church to Hampton Court Palace Golf Club. It was a massive success and got our friends and family in the party spirit.

The centrepieces were pink flowers from BBL Floral Design. Katy from Icing Elegance provided our cake.

Sonny and I made a sweet table and created a picture collage of all our guests on their wedding days.

38

I wore a Monsoon wedding dress. I felt so comfortable and accessorised with a mid-length veil and pointed shoes from ASOS.

Sonny chose a navy three-piece suit with a grey-checked waistcoat from Dapper Formalwear while the other members of the party wore navy versions.

On the morning of the wedding, I felt surprisingly calm. Once the official church part was over, we were both excited and grateful to have all our family and friends in one place after so long apart.

The bridesmaids opted for dark green gowns with gorgeous pleated bodices and romantic cowl backs.

We had Ed Harvey Music perform for our drinks reception. He is a friend of one of our guests and was amazing! He even managed to sing songs that catered for all ages.

DJ Lee from LR Disco Entertainment was unbelievable! We never stopped dancing and laughing. The marquee was just perfect for what we wanted, and it set the right tone for the evening.

Orlane and Adam tied the knot at Denbies Wine Estate Images courtesy of irockvisuals a inDRINK IT 42

Orlane and Adam met through a dating website in 2018. “I’m not sure how we matched as I lived in London and he was in Dorking, but I think it was a sign that we were meant to be,” says Orlane. “We went crazy golfing and had dinner in London, which was the best date ever. Adam and I texted for two months before we met, and we would send massive messages to each other and never get bored of talking. I found out later through his family that he is usually bad at replying to people!”

Adam popped the question at home. “I always joked about having a man getting down on one knee to propose to me, but I knew Adam wasn’t that kind of person and that it would actually feel a bit weird if he did,” shares the bride. “Adam couldn’t quite afford a ring, and I remember saying to him that evening that I didn’t need a ring for him to propose, so we decided to become engaged! We knew what we wanted and that it would take a couple of years to prepare a wedding, so it just came naturally.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“We used to live next door to Denbies Wine Estate and would go there for walks and lunches,” explains Orlane. “I had planned to visit a few other properties, but I kept talking about Denbies Wine Estate and realised nothing was going to compare, so I cancelled the viewings and booked Denbies. Dawn and her team were absolutely amazing to work with. She made sure the day was perfect and kept checking on us to make sure everything was the way we wanted it to be. Dawn was there for me from the start, and I never felt worried about anything. I feel so thankful that we never had to deal with any drama and that we could always trust the team with the planning of our day!”

For their favours, the couple gave their guests personalised cards and wildflower seeds. “Our main treat was a train ride,” recalls the bride. “We had a lot of guests travelling from abroad, some of which were making the journey just for the wedding, so we wanted to make sure everyone had fun and would have the best memories. The train ride was a real success and a nice way for our friends and family to get a bit of fresh air as well as take some lovely pictures from the top of the hill.”

The table plan was provided by The Surrey Wedding Company. “It was a wooden and glass door with the table names written on the windows,” adds Orlane. “We made the place names using corks, which looked great.”

Orlane and Adam opted for a cupcake and macaron tower. “We wanted to have a treats table where everyone could try French and English sweets,” continues the bride. “The cupcake tower had a cake at the top from Gorgeous Gem’s Bakery, which we brought home and enjoyed the next day with close family. Having the perfect macarons was important to me, so when I found the talented Jelena from Macarons Versailles, I was over the moon.”

Adam drove himself on the day, and Orlane arrived in an executive car booked through a taxi company. “I wasn’t overly fussed about having a fancy car,” reveals Orlane. “However, we did book a vintage British bus from 1950s Vintage Bus Hire for our French guests staying in Leatherhead. The bus picked them up and took them to the venue, which they all loved as it was a surprise!”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“My dress was called Finley by Modeca,” says the bride. “I had seen it on BRIDE by Aster’s website but I assumed it would never suit me, however it turned out to be the one! Hannah and her team were amazing, they are all about body positivity and made sure I felt like a princess. I was stressed about trying on dresses, but they made the experience so special. I accessorised with a Links of London bracelet that Adam bought me, a necklace and cute earrings. I also wore one of my grandma’s pins in my hair. She sadly passed away in December, so it was a way to have her with me on the day and as my something blue and old.

“My employer made me try on her veil one day to see if I liked the look of

it and as it fitted perfectly with the dress, she said that it could be my something borrowed!,” continues Orlane. “I am a nanny, so my employer and I are really close. I always knew I wanted her boys to hold my veil as I walked down the aisle, so it felt special that they would be holding their mum’s veil.”

Adam wore a suit from Moss Bros that was slightly different to the groomsmen to help him stand out. He finished the look with his late uncle’s cufflinks.

The bridesmaids opted for pink dresses. “They live in different countries, so we chose different shades of pink as it was difficult trying to get the exact same colour,” shares Orlane. “My maidof-honour had a navy blue dress to make her stand out.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We had a DJ entertain our guests in the evening,” explains the bride. “We wanted everyone to enjoy the party, and the dancefloor was never empty. We also had a photo booth as I had seen one at a friend’s wedding a few years ago and knew I wanted one at our wedding. It was so much fun, and now we have a lovely album with all the pictures in, and our guests got to take home a copy too!

“We performed a fun dance during the reception,” adds Orlane. “In France, it’s traditional for the bride and groom to dance under an umbrella while the guests throw steamers on top of it. Each piece of streamers that gets stuck on the top of the umbrella is meant to symbolise a year of happiness.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“The morning felt quite weird in a way,” recalls Orlane. “It felt like being in a bubble, but once we were at the venue, it all went by so fast. It had been two years of ups and down, not being sure if we were going to get married or if all the guests would make it. COVID-19 made everything tense, so to see everything going to plan was perfect. At the end of the night, we got to our room around midnight and sat there for two hours chatting about our wedding, which was a lovely way to end the day.”

Orlane’s favourite moment was walking down the aisle. “Seeing all our families and friends reunited after going through a tough pandemic and having Adam standing there waiting for me was a wonderful feeling,” adds Orlane. “What stood out the most is how our English and French guests became one on the day. We had always thought that because of the language barrier our wedding would be a bit different, but they all mixed together and partied like they always knew each other.

“Not many people know about it, but our first dance was actually our first time dancing as a couple, which made it even more special,” continues Orlane. “When I was getting ready in the morning, the last hour became quite a rush, and my maid-ofhonour took all my bags with her so that I didn’t have to worry about it when I arrived at the venue. She left ahead of the rest of us and I realised two minutes before leaving that I had my house keys in my handbag which was gone with her! I had to leave the house unlocked, but it did make us laugh!”

The ring bearers were dressed up as security agents. “They were so cute,” reveals the bride. “They walked down the aisle to a song from James Bond, which made everyone laugh. They walked again behind me, holding my veil acting like my bodyguards, and it meant so much to me to have them with me. When I walked down the aisle, I was at the point where I was about to cry with all the emotions going on, but then I found myself feeling so confused as I realised everyone was mixed

up in the room, and Adam was standing on the wrong side. We laugh about it now as it made no sense, but I guess not everything goes to plan at a wedding!

“Eray and Claire, our photographer and his wife, were just amazing,” says Orlane. “I found their website in 2020 and booked them because I knew Eray took amazing pictures. I loved that he captures natural moments rather than having us posing facing the camera. We always thought we would feel awkward because I’m really self conscious about my body, and Adam is awkward smiling in pictures, but Eray and Claire made us feel so comfortable! We are beyond impressed with their work, and they are such lovely people to have around on your big day, and all of our guests kept saying how friendly they were.”

DANCE SQUAD

My bridesmaids and I are thinking of creating a surprise dance routine. How do we go about this?

We love flash mobs and we’ve organised and taken part in quite a few including the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. For anyone looking to create their own surprise routine, then we suggest the following:

Music choice – Choose something that will suit the moment. Will the dance take place on the hen party or on the wedding day itself? It could mean two very different song choices.

Plan rehearsal times – Like the hen party and wedding date itself, plan and work out times that people can learn the routine. We are all busy people, so try your best to accommodate peoples’ diaries. At least three one-hour sessions work best spread out over a few weeks or months. The first hour will be getting to know the track, the second will focus on the moves and the third is to practice, practice and practice.

Less is more – Everyone has different dance abilities and so working out a routine that looks great doesn’t mean going overboard with complicated dance moves. It can be super simple but give the wow factor when it’s performed.

What questions should we ask a vintage bus company before booking?

HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES

Our experts solve your problems

FRESHLY PICKED IDEAS

What should I ask a florist before booking?

Before booking you should find out how long the company have been in business. It’s essential that your supplier has a high level of training and experience to make sure your day runs smoothly.

A good florist will usually have a website as well as social media pages. These should include reviews and recommendations from previous clients and photos of their previous work.

Make sure they are local and don’t have to travel hours to your venue. Be very wary of companies online that don’t show their location or are based hours away.

Find a knowledgeable and understanding supplier. They should listen to what you would like and put your ideas into reality.

Have an initial phone call, then meet up or video call to give them a detailed list of your requirements. Provide the supplier with any pictures that you like or colour samples and ask what they would suggest, and see if their ideas are what you’re looking for.

Provide details and pictures of the dress you have chosen – this can affect the shape and style of your bouquet.

Ask what flowers are in season to keep the cost reasonable, and if you have an unusual colour scheme, ask what the florist recommends. I recommend mixing silk flowers that are not in season with those that are to help keep the cost down.

When hiring a vintage bus, make sure that your supplier has an Operator’s Licence. Anyone can own an old bus, but those who supply them commercially must operate within the government’s strict licensing system. This gives you the confidence that there will be a competent transport manager making sure that the vehicles pass regular safety checks and that drivers are properly qualified. You can check your supplier has a licence at www.gov.uk but most reputable operators will provide a link from their own website.

Think about your chosen route and the practicalities of where to stop, pick up, set down, and turn around. Even a vintage bus will be around 30ft long, and it’s surprising how often we get asked to go into a tiny space designed for cars! There can be other physical restrictions too, such as overhanging trees or a low railway bridge, which a single decker can get through, but taller coaches can’t.

Meanwhile, don’t forget that groups of people take longer to move around than a car full, and vintage buses travel at a more leisurely

pace, so you can reduce stress on your special day by allowing extra time.

If your bus journey is short, it might be practical for the same bus to double back for a second trip: this can usually be done at a much lower cost than hiring two buses. Finally, bearing in mind that most vintage bus suppliers will have set aside their day and come out specially, you might be able to get added value by asking for a trip before the ceremony to bring people from a hotel or station. This could often be done for just the extra time and fuel, so it’s always worth asking!

EXPERT ADVICE 55

A STAND OUT CAKE

We’re currently planning our big day and we’ve decided against a traditional cake. Do you have any alternative suggestions?

If you’d prefer something that looks less traditional in design, then there are several stunning trends to consider. Floating tiers, spacers and clear acrylic tiers filled with flowers or lights are just a few of the most popular options.

You could opt for a textural or geometric design that would look like a piece of modern art. Remember, finding the right cake maker to understand and realise your vision is essential.

If you’re considering something that is not cake, there are lots of options to choose from such as a ‘cake’ made from cheese, brownies, doughnut stacks, macaron towers or even a dessert table. There is something to suit everyone if you think outside the box.

THE LOOK OF LOVE

There are so many photographers out there – how do we choose the right one for us?

Choosing a photographer can seem like a dauting prospect, especially since there are so many to choose from. Start by thinking about the style of picture you want, such as candid, formal, or styled and then look at a photographer’s portfolio of work. This will give you a good indication of what to expect.

Next, contact them. Have a chat with them and talk about what you’re after. You should get a good vibe from them, and you must feel comfortable. After all, they will be capturing one of your most special days, so you don’t want a false smile or a strained pose.

Price is obviously important too. Remember that the most expensive work is necessarily the best.

Look at their reviews from previous clients before you decide. They will have used the service so will know first-hand hand if they’re worth booking.

JUST THE TWO OF US

How can a celebrant make our ceremony extra special?

Having a celebrant write and deliver your ceremony means it has been created especially for you as a couple. Each of my ceremonies are completely bespoke and choreographed to fit your wishes. To legally marry in England and Wales you have to say two very simple statements which are very boring and unromantic. That means every civil ceremony sounds almost identical and has very little in terms of personalisation or flexibility. With a celebrant, you can marry anywhere and have your ceremony at any time.

You can include elements that are special to you, this could be nicknames, your love story, other members of your family, a keepsake that you always have with you, your children, or even your pet. The list can go on as there are no limits other than your imagination. A celebrant-led service is also special as you help to create it. You will work closely with your supplier to plan something that is both important and meaningful to you. You can choose to include any of the ceremonial aspects of a civil ceremony that you wish or if one doesn’t suit your style, then there is no need to include it.

You should build a good relationship with your supplier through the several meetings you will have. They will be able to offer advice on different ways to make your wedding individual to you and will talk you through the day, helping to get rid of any performance anxiety that you may have. It’s a fun experience to help create your own wedding ceremony, I did it and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Local photographers share their favourite images

Your wedding album should be a treasured memento of your big day, so you want it to be packed with fab photos that reflect all the magical moments. Although fashions may change and hairstyles come and go, the memories provided by your photos are timeless and will be with you forever. Therefore, it's important that you find the right photographer to suit you as a couple and the style of your wedding. To help get you started, we asked some of Surrey’s professionals to share their favourite wedding photos from throughout the day.

THE VOWS

“I am a storyteller with my camera, and for me, this tells a chapter from the day. The best man is handing one of the rings over to the bride whilst the mother-of-the-bride watches on to witness the event.” – Ryan Cox from Ryan Cox Photography.

“This is one of my favourite shots from this wedding as it’s so candid and natural. You can see the love they have for each other, and their personalities really shine through!” – Amelia Cox from Amelia May Photos.

“Weddings are full of emotional moments. I prefer to let these moments happen naturally, as real moments are the most treasured.” – Denise Winter from Denise Winter Photography.

“Keeley and Grant were having a Hollywood moment when I snapped this picture.” – Eray Kaya from irockvisuals.

“That tight squeeze is something money cannot buy.” – Pebble Milo from Pebble Heaven Photography.

HOLD ME CLOSE

“When you get married by the beach, and the sunset looks like this, it would be remiss not to head out and make the most of the light and reflect on the wedding day.” – Denise from Denise Winter Photography.

“I was really lucky to shoot a close family friend’s wedding. We live in a small village in the countryside so shooting photos on a tractor, which belonged to the son of the bride, was very fitting and unique!” – Amelia from Amelia May Photos.

“Here is Paileen and Michael in amongst the flowers. The sunlight was amazing, and they look so in love.” – Eray from irockvisuals.

“Just as the sun was setting, I took this couple for a final few photos. Paddy stopped and said to me: ‘Pebble can I have a moment? There are some things that I want to say to Sophie.’ I carried on shooting without them knowing, and it was simply a beautiful moment.” – Pebble from Pebble Heaven Photography.

“This couple was so much fun! They were keen to have different photo opportunities and as soon as I saw this pocket of light, they were there with me with no hesitation. As soon as we shot this, they were back with their friends and family enjoying the day.” – Ryan from Ryan Cox Photography.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

“I absolutely love this picture of the couple’s first dance. It was an honour shooting such a special moment and I love how you can see their pure joy through the photo.” – Amelia from Amelia May Photos.

“Like most people, I love a summer wedding, but the greens and golden browns of an autumn wedding make for a beautiful backdrop. Adding movement to couples’ photos helps keep them relaxed and not feeling awkward or uncomfortable.” – Denise from Denise Winter Photography.

“Barry and Lisa had just got married and initially felt quite shy taking pictures, however within seconds, they were both relaxed and enjoying posing.” – Eray from irockvisuals.

“This moment captures the best man’s speech. Can laughter be any purer than that?” – Pebble from Pebble Heaven Photography.

“Emotion is important to me and I love this photo of the groom telling his new bride how much he loves her. The tears of the bride and the support given by her maid-of-honour holding her hand and being there for her is wonderful.” – Ryan from Ryan Cox Photography.

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Our wedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details andmade sure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minutemeeting with her to run through the plan for the day, whichwe found was a great help and meant we knew exactly what toexpect. I recommend booking a venue with a dedicated weddingcoordinator or hiring an external company, so that you can relaxand enjoy yourself without having to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our photographer while he was working at a friend’s wedding. He has an amazing style that we both loved, and we found him really easy to be around. One of the best things we did in the run-up to the wedding was book a prewedding shoot. We were both quite nervous in front of the camera, and this put us at ease and meant that when we got to the big day, we both felt relaxed having our picture taken.

66

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening receptionthat would get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazingtrio who learnt our first dance song and incorporated someof our favourite tunes into their set list. We were a bit worriedthat people would get bored or restless throughout the day, butall of our guests were quite content chatting during the drinksreception, and I’m quite glad we kept things scaled back as itallowed us to catch up with friends and family who we hadn’t seenin a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’tmeet until the morning of the wedding. Originally, this mademe feel anxious but the whole process went smoothly, and theladies conducting our service were calming and reassuring. Weincorporated promises to each other in our vows that we feltrepresented us as a couple. For those of you about to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, as there’s nothing morespecial than looking into your partner’s eyes and telling them howmuch you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

DRESSED to impress

The latest trends for the wedding party

When it comes to a wedding day, whether you’re the bride or a guest, the million-dollar question for everyone is: what am I going to wear? For the bride and groom, as they are the stars of the show, it’s likely that they have at least an idea of what their big-day look will be like. But for the rest of the bridal party, where do you begin?

First and foremost, the venue and theme of the day are paramount. A long flowing gown for bridesmaids will look out of place in a field for a tipi wedding; similarly, the mother-of-the-bride in a bold, tropical print, summer dress may stand out against a stately home wedding venue with a Bridgerton-inspired theme.

Secondly, the weather, we British folk like to moan about it and rightly so, because how many sunny days do we have each year? The season and the inclement weather will dictate not only the attire, the colour palette – no one wears pastel yellow in winter! – but also your accessory choice; boleros, jackets and wraps will be your cosy friend for winter ‘I dos’.

Read on, to find out more about on-trend fashion choices for 2023 weddings...

MUM’S THE WORD

The mother-of-the-bride and groom are going to feel under the spotlight along with the rest of the bridal party. This added pressure can be overwhelming as they may not have worn occasion wear for many years. These factors can certainly put a strain on what should be an enjoyable experience, as the bride/groom tries to make them feel as reassured as possible, offer support and advice; and as with everyone else on the day, they too should feel comfortable and themselves leading to a happy and confident mother!

Firstly, sophistication is key, but this doesn’t mean frumpy! If you love your clothes, then go for a bold colour or striking pattern but keep it demure by avoiding low-cut necklines or a short hem so you can look back on the photos for years to come with no regrets.

For many women, no matter their age, we all seem to hate our upper arms. Experimenting with three-quarter-length sleeves, cover-ups and jackets will allow you to feel confident and can add variety to your look –they’re also perfect for winter weddings to keep the chill off. Accessories are your best friend when it comes to your wedding outfit, you can finish off a look with a fancy hat and a simple dress can be jazzed up with jewellery and a bright handbag. Many modern mums are opting to leave the traditional hats at home in favour of something a little smaller, such as a fascinator, statement flower in the hair or stunning hair accessories.

The key is to complement the rest of the bridal party and not compete with them; so be aware of colour palettes, themes and what the rest of the bridal party is wearing.

Lastly, not only should you look like a million dollars, but you should feel it inside and out, that’s having confidence in who you are and, making sure what you’re wearing is comfortable from head to toe. Is the hat the right fit, will it make you itchy and hot? Are your shoes the best size and material? You’ll be on your feet for a large part of the day; and when you’re not and you’re sat down, is your dress cutting into your hips at the table, can you breathe?!

Brides Visited in Ashtead, Surrey, tells us some of their top tips:

Bold contrasting colours and cap sleeves are a strong feature for the coming season.

Jackets are a way of giving your outfit that all-important edge.

Don’t forget your hatinator for an extra lift.

Try not to hide in the shadows, as part of the main entourage you will complement the colour scheme but you also need to stand out from the crowd. You are a special part of the day and will endeavour to make your daughter or son proud.

Veromia Occasions and Mascara can be found at Brides Visited, where our professional team offer a one-to-one service giving you expert help and advice to find that extra special outfit.

75 DRESSING THE BRIDAL PARTY

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Grooms and groomsmen, and the fathers of the newlyweds too, are certainly taking more pride in their wedding appearance and enjoying shopping just as much as the leading ladies. Men’s fashion has come a long way in the last decade, along with greater acceptance of breaking wedding traditions and protocols. Some of our favourite grooms’ looks here at Your Surrey Wedding are those gents rocking their long beards and tattoos, in a pink waistcoat with a patterned shirt – oh-so-cool, and totally unique and individual. Embrace you!

The bespoke tailored look: if you’ve never had a professionally fitted suit, your wedding day is the occasion. The perfect fit is essential for comfort and looking good in wedding photos, and you can have little personalised elements added such as your initials and wedding date stitched into the lining.

Earth tones: key for bridesmaids and venue styling, this will be a trend for the men too. Think sand-coloured, beige and browns. For something, a little fresher go for green palettes.

The tux: grooms who still adore the traditional tuxedo can opt for it, but think about variations maybe velvet (aka Bond-style) or bright colours or patterned effect.

Adorn and accessorise: make your personality stand out with your accessory choices – here’s where you can really get creative; a dashing waistcoat, funky watch, or artsy pocket square and braces.

HERE COME THE GIRLS

As much as we all love our friendship groups dearly, there are a lot of personalities grouped together. The same goes for fashion styles; we all have bits we love about our bodies and bits we don’t. The best thing a wedding couple can do to make their bridal and groom’s party happy is to be relaxed and open-minded about the outfits you want them to wear – everyone will then be happy and enjoy the day!

Top trends for maids in 2023 to be inspired by are:

The romance for retro: the ‘90s are back, more so the satin slip dress. Although it may not be for every body shape, it’s romantic, and elegant comes in a variety of colours and is on-trend.

Royal approval: with our love of Bridgerton and period dramas still going strong, Victorian-style ruffles and layers can certainly look the part on a modern silhouette think shoulders, waterfall skirts, hems and across the body – super flattering too!

Technicolour dreamboat: gone are the days when all the bridesmaids

are in one dress colour and style. The mix-and-match look is here to stay, and this has evolved to not just colour palettes, but also textures. Your bridal party will look gorgeous in a mix of satin, velvet and sequin – and so will your wedding pictures!

Colour swatch: undecided on your colour scheme? Be inspired by these trending bridesmaid dress tones: neutrals, nudes, black, white and earth tones – venue styling matching these will complete a cohesive look across the day.

Standout from the crowd: if your bride squad encompasses a bridesman, or people who just don’t like wearing dresses, then why not match still in style or colour but opt for a velvet dinner suit jacket, tuxedo, or rock a jumpsuit?

Q&A

NATURAL BEAUTY

How do I get my skin looking its best in the run-up to my big day, and what products do you recommend for a flawless base?

Creating a radiant, fresh complexion isn’t just about what you put onto your skin. To help you achieve a flawless base, you need to consider the following:

Firstly, drink plenty of water and take skin supplements to help start you on the right track. I recommend Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C and a Collagen-boosting supplement.

Other factors that affect your skin are sleep quality, environmental damages and hormone changes. Always try to achieve between seven and eight hours of sleep in the run-up to your day. I know it can be stressful planning a wedding, but any stress and sleepless nights will show on your skin. When you’re feeling vexed, try to do some gentle breathing exercises or take a walk in nature – your skin will thank you for it.

Your daily moisturiser should have an SPF of at least 30 to help protect your skin from the environment. I have always used Arbonne’s skincare range as I know the ingredients are high quality and a small amount goes a long way. My favourite is their AgeWell Daily Moisturiser with SPF.

Lastly, if you’ve never had a skincare regime or feel you don’t have time, start small by trying to cleanse and moisturise your face every night before bed. A gentle face wash like The Ordinary’s Squalane Cleanser will remove all your make-up and impurities whilst retaining your skin’s natural moisture. A good night cream is Facetheory’s Relaxing Night Cream M10PRO, as it’s suitable for all skin types and does all the work for you whilst you get a good night’s sleep.

Treat yourself to some facials for skin cell renewal, and have a strict skincare regime in the run-up to your big day. Remember, you have to go all in and look after your skin from the inside and out to achieve the best results.

Make-up artists can work wonders covering up blemishes with concealers and foundations, but any dry areas are more tricky so remember, happy base, happy face!

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

The ultimate

destination

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to the airport!

Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some cocktails.

We had a farewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

92

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi McFarlane (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub
