NEW OUTDOOR WEDDING VENUE LAUNCHING DECEMBER 2020
Tilgate Park Weddings A VENUE LIKE NO OTHER
MAZE • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS
Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.
THE WALLED GARDEN
Be amongst be the first to is th married in g in award-winn venue
Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines all adorned with thousands of fairy lights. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats.
EVENTS ARENA
The perfect location to host a large marquee for your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Measuring more than 1,000 square metres, there’s ample room for extra entertainment like a band or giant garden games and it is conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around every twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Spring into action S
o much has happened since last I spoke to you! If you’ll indulge me personally for a moment, I’d love to share my news. I turned 40. Yep, the big 4-0 and it wasn’t as scary as I thought. Despite not being able to celebrate how I’d like thanks to lockdown 3.0, it made me remember to appreciate the more valuable things in the life, such as the love of my friends and family. Next: I’m going to be a bridesmaid. I’m giddy with excitement! Our dear Melissa Barker, fellow editor here at CWM, popped the question last month asking me if I’d accept this huge honour. I’m thrilled to be making this journey with such a dear friend and I’ll be sharing our learnings every step of the way. Despite being weddingobsessed, I’m sure we’ll make a few mistakes, enabling us to throw up a couple of warning signs for all you planning couples out there. Finally, of course, something that affects us all: Boris’ roadmap out of this mess. Here at CMW HQ we were thrilled to see a plan back to wedding normality. It’ll be a slow process, but with everyone pulling together and staying safe it should mean we see our beloved weddings and wedding industry back in full force by the end of June. That in itself is cause for celebration. On that note, let’s take a look at what we’ve got for you this issue as I round up my highlights for you across these two pages. We’re celebrating our 90th issue of Your Sussex Wedding with spring ahead of us – a time of al fresco “I dos,” pastel hues and beautiful blooms and there’s plenty of seasonal fabulousness on every page, so I’ll delay you no longer. Enjoy and keeeep planning!
Emma’s beautiful pastel pink and eucalyptus bouquet is just the look Melissa has in mind for her own, with smaller versions for myself and my fellow bridesmaids. Read all about Emma’s beautifully intimate day from page 26.

A WELCOME RETURN
During our time confined to our own homes, many of us longed for spas to reopen. In fact, back in the early days of lockdown 1.0, insights and consulting company Kantar reported that going to a spa had made the top spot on its list of activities folk were most looking forward to once restrictions were lifted. Imagine our delight then when we heard that spas can fling open their doors for business again from 12th April for day stays and from 17th May for breaks. To celebrate The Spa at South Lodge has launched a gorgeous mini spa day. The package includes five hours access to the gym, use of the indoor pool, wild swimming pool and vitality pool, plus a one-hour treatment. Choose from a bamboo massage, bespoke facial or radiance facial. Afterwards, recline in the deep relaxation room or treat yourself to an additional treatment such as a mani or pedi to get ready for the spring. The package is available daily from 12th April to 16th May inclusive, from 9am to 2pm or from 2pm to 7pm at £130 per person. Situated amongst the grounds of the luxury five-star South Lodge Hotel, The Spa at South Lodge provides a haven surrounded by wildlife, nature and peace. It champions the estate’s landscape, perched atop the rolling hills of the High Weald AONB. For further information, check out the website www.exclusive.co.uk/the-spa-at-south-lodge

A WAY BACK
Days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer and we’re certainly starting to feel a spring in our step. And what could be a more wonderful celebration of the season than daffodils in full bloom? Set high in the Weald, just ten minutes away from the centre of Horsham, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens offers a truly magnificent patch of country woodland and tranquillity, and at this time of year the magic of its daffodil fields take centre stage. A carpet of these springtime favourites covers the slopes of Leonardslee and features magnificent yellow blooms of various types of narcissus, a representation of hope for the future. If you’re looking to get out and about again by looking at wedding venues, this is a terrific excuse to see Leonardslee at its finest. Spring in bloom
With the announced roadmap out of lockdown, the Worthing Dome has devised a plan of its own – one that will soon see them back to hosting their beloved weddings. Aware that many couples are keen to tie the knot in the spring, before restrictions are fully lifted, the venue has created a micro wedding package especially for groups of 15, available 12th April to 16th May. The deal, which offers you savings of up to £600, includes daytime hire of the Whispering Gallery and Atrium Bar with the ceremony held in the former, seaside two-course menu or vintage afternoon tea and a glass of prosecco. Prices start from £750. There are a further two special packages for groups of up to 30, available between 17th May and 20th June 2021. With discounts of up to £650 here, these fantastic offers include your ceremony and reception, as well as a prosecco drinks reception and delicious wedding breakfast with three menus to choose from. Included too is full management of your special day. What’s more, it’s possible to add elements such as dinner wine, canapés and a cheese tower. Prices for these two packages start from £1,900. It’s easy to forget what oracles of wedding knowledge local wedding suppliers are. Yes, we know that photographers are experts on photography and cake-makers are cake aficionados, but thanks to the sheer amount of time they spend on all things wedding, they actually have a pretty good knowledge of anything and everything. That’s why we love this blog post by Tania Jonas of Steve and Tania Photography. TO ICE OR NOT TO ICE? A quick Google search and you’re given a thousand theories of how the wedding cake came to be. I quite like this one, from the Food Network in Canada who state: “The origins of the wedding cake date back to ancient Rome, when weddings concluded with the groom breaking a loaf of barley bread over the bride’s head, symbolizing fertility. Guests would scramble to pick up the crumbs in order to take home some of that good luck.” How wonderful! Although, I’m not sure how much the bride would appreciate that after spending so much time and effort getting her hair done! Why three tiers? Apparently, it was traditional that the bottom tier would be eaten at the ceremony, the middle tier for distributing after the event, and the top tier was saved for the first child’s christening for good luck.
Dressed or naked? During the Victorian era, the white icing was used, they say, to symbolise purity. Perhaps so, or perhaps it’s more to do with preservation? Whatever the reason, nothing says tradition as much as a beautifully white iced wedding cake. Personally, I can’t bear fruit cake of any description, but Steve loves it, so it’s wonderful that today wedding cakes can be tiered, traditionally iced and filled with fruit or they can be a stack of doughnuts, a pyramid of fairy cakes, wheels of cheese, a pile of macarons, or a tower of chocolate cream puffs – quite frankly anything one desires! Nowadays, it’s really popular to have naked cakes. They’re incredibly beautiful and, dare I say, a little more healthy? What does the cutting of the cake symbolise? According to The Secret History of Wedding Cakes (Food Network, Canada), the ceremonial first cut of the wedding cake is symbolic of the newlyweds’ first task together and their eternal love for one another. The hand of the groom is placed over the hand of the bride when cutting the cake to represent his support for her and her promise to take care of him and their family. They would cut from the bottom tier to symbolise the longevity and continuity of their relationship. Uncover more wedding wisdom at www.steveandtaniaphotography.uk
SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT… JACQUIE KEELEY, FAB FOOD FOR YOU “For me, food and its presentation are the most important parts of any wedding,” Jacquie says. A farmer’s daughter, this expert wedding caterer has a keen eye for well-farmed food and only uses local suppliers, meaning she can trust that the animal husbandry is of the highest standard. Here, she sources ingredients such as outdoor-bred pork; free-range pasture-fed chicken, duck and eggs; and grass-fed cattle and lamb. She also supports her local gamekeeper by using game that’s in season. So, you can be sure that your meal hasn’t travelled thousands of miles, leaving it’s mark on the environment, and has also supported local Sussex businesses. Jacquie is fortunate enough to live in a listed cottage in Sussex complete with huge garden. She’s a keen gardener and delights in growing as much of the produce used in her catering as possible. All flowers and herbs featured in her dishes are homegrown, while salad stuff and vegetables are grown within a mile of her cottage. She tells us, “In this day and age clients expect to be able to have whatever they’d like, so I do have to source elsewhere if my grower doesn’t have it in the ground, so to speak. I still try to use local and British though, and if that fails, I’ll opt for Fairtrade, as that will assist those in less affluent situations.” A wedding and event planner, Jacquie feels at home organising all aspects of her clients’ big days, but for her it’s the food that guests will remember: “You could be in the most stunning venue, but if the meal isn’t good, that’s what you’ll recall.” Discover more at www.fabfoodforyou.co.uk 10

ALL SAINTS THE OLD CHAPEL 01323 643 181 | www.allsaintschapeleastbourne.org

All Saints Chapel is a beautiful, rather hidden venue. Situated by the sea in the picturesque ancient seaside village of Meads, Eastbourne, this is a majestic English architectural masterpiece designed by Henry Woodyer in 1874. The Grade II listed Old Gothic Chapel is deconsecrated and is fully licensed for civil partnerships, events and functions, making it a stunning and versatile space to suit your every need. The venue’s huge timber gates open off of a leafy residential street onto The Old Chapel’s front grounds where guests can mingle pre- and post-ceremony. Capture your confetti shots here before heading to the neighbouring park for further beautiful couple and group photos with the Chapel in the background. The venue boasts four parts. First, the entrance reception, which is a modern, light and airy addition. It’s furnished with antique desks and pews complete with bar area where your reception drinks are served. Next is Harriot’s Hallway, an ancient cloister named after the founding and selfless Sister Harriot Byron Brown. Now beautifully decorated with strings of fairylights it’s used as the pre-nuptial area for the bride and her bridesmaids to relax, hidden from view, before their grand entrance. You then find yourself in the open area of the stairwell complete with wrought iron bannisters and gothic windows. You’re free to add your own personal touches anywhere you wish, but this is the perfect area to go to town! Finally, the pièce de resistance: The Great Hall. Here the Minton-tiled 60-foot aisle awaits the bridal party. The bejewelled light that floods in is ever changing, highlighting the Chapel’s various elements. Thirty metres of vaultedtimber ceiling tower above the altar, 150-year-old floor tiles lay beneath your feet and an elegant bar area stands beside hand-carved pew ends in the near corner of the banquet hall tempting guests to sample some of the 25 different gins on offer. Ceremonies and celebrations take place in The Great Hall, which can accommodate 120 seated and 200 standing. There’s a room turnaround while you and your loved ones enjoy canapés and prosecco in the garden and reception area. 23

mma and Joe met in Bali. Emma was travelling solo and Joe was on holiday with friends. They were staying in the same hostel and the evening before Joe was due to head back to the UK they had dinner together and danced all night. They exchanged numbers before he left and Emma continued on with her adventures through Indonesia and Australia. “We fell in love during those eight weeks,” Emma says. Due to the time difference, the pair would wake up in the middle of the night to talk to each other. When Emma arrived home, they couldn’t wait to be together again, and she drove to Catterick, where Joe was based as an army captain, the very next day. “We’ve been inseparable ever since. Within eight months we’d bought our first home and our cat, Martha,” Emma tells us. Joe proposed at home over a champagne breakfast. It was timed so that they could celebrate at a family get together planned for the next day. Read on as the bride shares her treasured memories of their wedding day…
SETTING THE SCENE Wivelsfield Parish Church is a special spot for Emma and Joe. It being so close to their home, they regularly take walks through the churchyard and surrounding fields. “We loved the small, quaint country feel and the vicar, Christopher, and congregation were wonderfully open and warm from our very first visit,” Emma says. So, they chose the beautiful church as their ceremony venue. Covid interfered with their first choice of reception venue but luckily, they discovered the incredible South Lodge. “We chose it because it’s where we had our engagement dinner. The rooms and food are amazing, and the grounds are utterly stunning,” Emma explains. Unfortunately, the reception venue wasn’t the only element of the big day that had to be altered due to the pandemic. “We were due to be married in July with 100 guests, cake, band, garden games, sit-down meal and all the trimmings,” the bride explains. She initially felt heartbroken about having to change things so dramatically after 18 months spent planning everything to perfection. “We toyed with the idea of having a bigger celebration in the future, but most importantly we just wanted to be married,” Emma remembers. This is why, ultimately, they decided to go ahead with their more intimate and precious celebration on 23rd August, 2020. The pair chose a natural, light and neutral theme for their styling. Meadow flowers in white and pastel hues lined the aisle during the ceremony and were later brought back to South Lodge to decorate the tables. Emma tells us, “We had to find a new florist when our plans changed, so Jane from Dove and Myrtle only had four weeks’ notice. But she brought my vision of natural, wild and fresh timelessness to life perfectly.” The tables were all named after the couple’s favourite holiday destinations, including Paris, Dubrovnik and Bosnia, with Bali being the top table. The newlyweds and their intimate group of nearest and dearest enjoyed canapés before sitting down to a decadent champagne afternoon tea feast. While restrictions meant they couldn’t have an evening reception in the traditional sense, the assembled party enjoyed a laughter-filled evening on the terrace overlooking the beautiful South Downs, before 27
heading into the restaurant, Botanica, for a family dinner.
LOOKING THE PART Emma wore a Stella York gown, style 6758, with a custom lace back and cathedral-length veil. “It was the first dress I tried on and fell completely in love with the pockets,” she remembers. Her look was accessorised with pearl earrings and bracelet, Emma’s birthstone. Meanwhile, Joe looked dapper in a tailor-made suit. His groomsman was dressed in a super-smart Hugo Boss suit, and the maid-of-honour looked gorgeous in a dusky pink dress with a silk belt and beautiful, yet subtle, beaded design.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Emma shares, “We felt ecstatic, excited, relieved and blissfully happy. The highlight for me was the ceremony and walking down the aisle towards Joe. Our big day was fun and intimate. Even with a guest list of 30, it still felt every bit like a wedding.” The bride would like to thank her beloved sister and maid-of-honour, Sophie, who did so much to help with preparations, taking the bridal stress and worry away from her. “Our florist, Jane, and seamstress, Helen, were also absolute dreams. No request was too much, even with only four weeks’ notice!” Emma says.
THE GETAWAY Joe planned the newlyweds’ honeymoon and surprised Emma with a romantic three-day boat trip around Crete and a honeymoon suite. “It was pure bliss,” Emma remembers. “We felt so relaxed and such a huge sense of relief that all the worries about how the pandemic would affect the wedding were over. We could finally enjoy being husband and wife,” she concludes.

They soon discovered that they wanted the same things out of life: “We enjoy similar things, but both appreciate our independence,” Hannah explains. Romance blossomed from here and the couple later moved in together. One night, Hannah arrived home to a hallway full of petals and balloons leading her up the stairs to their bedroom where she found Nathan on one knee holding out an engagement ring with “marry me?” laid out in petals on the bed behind him. The
date was 31st March, 2019, and it’s one the pair will never forget as when they told their families the good news the next day, April Fool’s Day, no one believed them! The venue hunt was on and top of the checklist was somewhere with natural beauty and simple, chic elegance. Hannah explains, “Upwaltham Barns ticked all the boxes. We both felt really comfortable there and in fact, we’ve returned since our big day for a first anniversary meal, just before lockdown 2.0.” Join us as the bride shares more wonderful memories of the wedding day…

icky and Chris started out as neighbours in the block of flats where they lived. Chris had obviously caught Vicky’s eye as she asked him out for a drink, and this visit to the local pub began their beautiful romance. Chris proposed while the pair were on holiday in Cornwall two years later. They’d met up with family for breakfast and that’s where he got down on one knee and asked Vicky the all-important question. “I had a feeling it was coming as we’d just moved in together, but he still caught me by surprise,” she says. Read on as the bride shares her account of the big day…
SETTING THE SCENE When it came to the ceremony location, the decision was simple. St Peter’s Church, Henfield, holds particular meaning for the bride as she grew up attending its services and had marked several significant events there. With the nuptials arranged, the couple planned a special celebration at Pelham House with 75 of their nearest “We couldn’t believe it and dearest. Then, in the final stages when we heard the news of preparations, Covid struck and the nation was plunged into lockdown. the next day that we were Vicky recalls, “Our venues and all about to go into of our suppliers were amazing and lockdown for a second supported us completely throughout the upheaval.” Having moved the big time. We’d snuck our bash to the following year, the pair wedding through just were still understandably impatient to tie the knot and proceeded to plan a in time!” micro wedding in line with the Covid guidelines in place at the time. Vicky explains, “We managed to keep the key elements of the ceremony largely the same, but we had to change the music slightly as we weren’t allowed to sing or have the bagpipe entrance we’d planned.” The bride was, however, still able to walk down the aisle to her chosen music, which she couldn’t imagine doing without. The piece was A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman, played by family friend and Guildhall scholar, Ramon Branch Biescas, having learned it especially for the occasion in less than three weeks. The most significant change was, of course, the reception and finding a venue for the wedding breakfast proved difficult. The bride tells us, “Despite guidelines saying that venues could cater for a 15-person reception, a lot of local independents were reluctant. I was keen to support local business, as well as finding somewhere special and away from the crowds. Happily, Heritage by Matt Gillan said ‘yes,’ and we’re so glad they did.” Matt, of Great British Menu fame, Hannah and the team carefully prepared a private room for the newlyweds and their guests. Vicky continues, “The food was exquisite and they very kindly allowed us to bring in our own flowers, cake and finishing touches.” On the day the couple did everything within their power to adhere to government regulations and took great care in looking after their guests. Vicky hopped on the sewing machine and hand made luxury face masks for everyone in keeping with the wedding’s 38

palette of Hawick tartan, from Chris’ hometown, and blush. The father-of-thebride and his partner were also on hand to make goodie bags filled with the service sheet, a pen for the guest book, a ribbon wand (since confetti was banned) and a little wedding favour from The Botanical Candle Co. Since the guest list had to be restricted with only immediate family and Vicky’s maid-of-honour present, the couple got in touch with WedStream who were able to live stream the “I dos” to friends and family unable to be there in person. “We were incredibly touched that so many joined us live from all over, with many more friends and family watching on catch-up in the days that followed. It was definitely a worthwhile investment and a way to treasure the day’s memories,” Vicky shares.
“We don’t feel short-changed at all. We had an incredible day that was so intimate and personal to us. It was our wedding and we wouldn’t change a thing.”
LOOKING THE PART
Vicky first laid eyes on the dress of her dreams in a bridal boutique several years ago and the designer’s name, Naomi Neoh, stuck in her mind. She tracked the gown down after Chris proposed and luckily, she fitted the sample perfectly. Vicky tells us, “It was double my budget, but amazingly the boutique agreed to sell me the sample within my price range. Local tailor Katie Fitzsimons and Sarah Lacey Dry Cleaning carefully brought it back to prime condition and it was the most wonderful dress to wear.” Chris is a proud Scotsman but decided against wearing a kilt in favour of ‘trews’ made from his hometown’s tartan, Hawick.
Katie created an incredible three-piece suit from the specially-sourced fabric, and he accessorised it with his grandfather’s pocket watch, a Hawick tartan tie and a matching pocket square. Meanwhile, the groomsmen wore grey suits, but also accessorised with tartan ties and pocket squares for a cohesive look. Sadly, only one of Vicky’s bridesmaids was able to attend. She wore a burgundy, knee-length dress with a pair of rose leaf earrings gifted by the bride.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Vicky and Chris are dearly loved by their friends and family, many of whom had gone the extra mile to support them on their big day during such unprecedented times. Vicky explains, “Our family and my maid-of-honour travelled hundreds of miles to be there before heading straight back again. Our vicar moved his holiday so that he could marry us. My hairdresser got her husband to take a day off to look after their kids so she could do my hair. Our photographer was amazing and gave us extra time. Our florist put together an amazing package to fit our budget. Our wedding was a real ray of sunshine in the Covid gloom.”
THE GETAWAY After saying goodbye to family, the pair headed to Ashdown Park Hotel for a minimoon. “It was the perfect end to a perfect day and they very kindly upgraded our room. We enjoyed a glass of Ridgeview together, so relieved to finally be husband and wife,” Vicky remembers. 39
“We felt overwhelmed and overjoyed that we were finally getting married, as well as relieved that the wait was over.”

Free-spirited and edgy, yet soft – this shoot shows us the way forward Images courtesy of Amy Davies Photography
“
T
he boho festival bride is soft and feminine with an edgy twist,” says photographer and shoot coordinator Amy Davies. With outdoor celebrations being a possible way forward for weddings as life evolves into the new normal, the team’s goal was to create the feel of a bride who’s part of the nature surrounding her, while standing out from the backdrop. Crucially this means practical footwear she won’t lose in the grass! Set at a local horse-training farm and shot at sunset at the end of the summer, these images sing of the 2020s determined and rebellious bride.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Ta-da! Finishing touches to wow the crowds
Did you know?
Confetti is th rown at weddings as a symbol of fertility and prosperity.
P
ersonality is paramount when it comes to planning a wedding, and it’s the super-cool finishing touches you add that will convey what makes the day uniquely you. They may seem small, but they’re elements that speak volumes and act to take your day from special to spectacular. We’ve rounded up some top tips and ideas from local wedding suppliers to start your creative juices flowing.
“Why not consider a confetti station ready for guests to pick up on the way out of the ceremony. Our natural biodegradable confetti is the perfect option and approved for use by most venues.” – Sara Ellis, To Have and To Hire Events
You complete me
There are several symbolic gestures you can add into your special ceremony, whether you’ve opted for entirely bespoke vows with a celebrant, or you’re looking to add meaning to a registrar-led ceremony.
“If your venue permits, plant a beautiful rose bush during your ceremony to symbolise your love continuing to grow and blossom over the years. Alternatively, use a pot and transport it to your own garden later.” – Merie Brown, Orange Rose Ceremonies
“Releasing two doves after your ‘I dos’ symbolises the start of your journey as you fly up and away together. You can then choose to release an additional three birds to represent the love of those who are watching over you, there in spirit.” – Viv Lambert, Lambert’s Dove Release Brighton 49
Personalise your venue
www.katierogersphotography.com https://kellyhearnphotography.co.uk
“My best advice would be to include gold or copper cutlery. It’s a simple touch that makes an incredible difference to the look of your tables. Just swapping out regular silver cutlery for a metallic hue to complement the rest of your wedding palette will take your table setting design to the next level.” – Natalie Morson, The Elysian Styling Company
www.jacksonandcophotography.com
“It’s so important to consider every part of your reception space and how each will change throughout the day. Lanterns styled beautifully in the corner give a warm ambience during the ceremony and can be moved and re-styled for use during the evening reception.” – Sara, To Have and To Hire Events
Adding characterful touches that reflect your personalities are what will truly make your day stand out and be memorable.
50
www.urbanbridesmaid.com
https://kellyhearnphotography.co.uk
“Blossom trees provide a guaranteed wow-factor. Styled at the ceremony entrance, at the end of the aisle, or as a backdrop to the top table, they add drama and height.” – Sara, To Have and To Hire Events
“It’s easy to underestimate the power of lighting and how changing this from day to night can completely transform, lift and elevate a room. Use it to highlight features of your space and add to the atmosphere of your day.” – Rachel Leach, The Little Details
FINISHING TOUCHES
Fun times
“Fireworks are a fabulous way to end the night if the venue allows. Alternatively, any style of human tunnel creates a sense of togetherness, where your guests can wave sparklers or hold jars containing fairylights.” – Merie, Orange Rose Ceremonies “Neon signs are such a popular option adding a modern touch to any wedding. Don’t forget to utilise yours for those all-important photo moments throughout the day as a couple and with your guests.” – Sara, To Have and to Hire Events
www.capturemybigday.com
Incorporate a special surprise or an extra element of fun into your evening’s revelries for a party to remember.
“Hiring a live painter to document your day is a lovely idea. A fingerprint guest book is a more budget-friendly alternative and will also produce a work of art to treasure.” – Merie, Orange Rose Ceremonies “Add a modern twist to the night with a food truck outside providing guests with hot chocolates as they see you off and wish you well.” – Merie, Orange Rose Ceremonies
“Don’t forget about your outside space. Blankets and sparklers provide a lovely touch to an al fresco seating area.” – Sara, To Have and To Hire Events
“Balloons have seen a huge increase in popularity over the past year with many beautiful and stylish options available. We just love a personalised balloon as an alternative ‘thank you’ gift to flowers.” – Sara, To Have and To Hire Events
Balloonatics
No longer restricted to children’s birthday parties, today’s balloon décor is chic and sophisticated. Check out our experts’ suggestions.
“I do love a balloon drop at the end of the night, with messages attached or inside for guests when they land. Sometimes guests have to collect the words and put them together to make a message, which is a super-fun end to the night.” – Merie, Orange Rose Ceremonies
CONTACT OUR EXPERTS “Floating balloon ceilings are a fun styling option, as they gently float above your guests’ heads. Colours can be tailored to match any palette and a fun option is to have it installed above a dancefloor or bar area to add to the party feel.” – Sara, To Have and To Hire Events

ECO
luxe
Love is all around with this environmentallyconscious shoot captured at Patrick’s Barn, East Grinstead Images courtesy of Markuza Photography
O
ur idea was to show that a wedding can be sustainable and eco-conscious without compromising on luxurious details,” explains shoot “ coordinator and venue stylist Sally Gallis of Luna And The Lane. She gathered a crack team of wedding suppliers together and using elements that are conscious of and kind to the environment they crafted this incredible creation that exhibits more than just a little love. From bamboo jewellery and plates to edible flowers, vegan food and vegan shoes – no detail was missed. What’s more, dried grasses and preserved flowers contrast beautifully with foraged and potted florals to create enchanting meadow pieces, along with a sumptuous bouquet, which can easily be transported and re-used to create less waste. With a soft neutral and pastel palette of dusky blues and pinks against stone and cream, the crispness of Bowen Dryden’s Poem range and the rich greens of the foliage shine out. Sally says, “We chose to showcase this particular range as I was immediately blown away by the style and form of the pieces as well as the story behind how they’ve been thoughtfully and ecologically created.” So, lose yourself in these images and discover how to wed with kindness. 56

TRANSPORT
LOVE
and CARRIAGE
A B
Arrive in style with the help of our A-Z guide to wedding transport IS FOR ARRIVAL It’s your big day, make a grand entrance and arrive in style.
C
IS FOR BUS We don’t mean journeying to your venue on the 12A! If you’re saying “I do” before making your way to another location for the celebrations, a vintage red Routemaster is a super-stylish way to travel. We suggest: @Southdownhistoricvehicles
IS FOR COACH Classic coach or practical minibus – choose to suit your style and they can offer real peace of mind to you and your guests when it comes to getting home safely at the end of the night. For retro chic, check out www.empresscoaches.com and for modern reliability we suggest www.middleearthminibus.co.uk
D
E
IS FOR ELEGANCE It might sound daft, but whether or not your dress will actually fit into your chosen mode of transport is a serious consideration. If you’ve opted for a princess ballgown, you’ll need plenty of space in order to maintain your poise and dignity as an elegant bride. We recommend a Beauford or Branford, which are incredibly spacious and ooze elegance to boot. We suggest www.chariotschauffeurs.co.uk
F
IS FOR DECORATION Many wedding car hire companies will decorate your chosen vehicle with ribbons to match your big-day theme. It’s worth exploring as an option when doing your research.
IS FOR FLEET To avoid multiple trips, consider how many vehicles you’ll need to carry the bridal party to the ceremony promptly. Investigate companies that can offer at least two vehicles to make the journeys simultaneously. 63
K
H
IS FOR KIT Is your vehicle kitted out for its VIP passengers? A bottle of bubbly and some glasses to toast your commitment is definitely in order. Paladins Classic Cars even includes umbrellas, an emergency sewing kit and mineral water with its cars. Check out www.paladinsclassiccars.co.uk
IS FOR HORSES Why not travel the fairytale way in a horse-drawn carriage? It’s oh-so romantic. Check out www.mapleleafcarriages.com
IJ
IS FOR INSURANCE Always be certain you’re booking a credible and reputable company that’s fully insured.
IS FOR JAGUAR Did you know that a car counts as “classic” if it’s over 20 years old, but generally those produced between 1940 and 1970, whereas “vintage” vehicles are those built between 1919 and 1930? So, to arrive in classic style look out for Jaguars, Bentleys and Daimlers. Check out http://amazinggraceweddingcars.com
L M N IS FOR LIMOUSINE Treat your bridal party to a luxurious limo. Check out https://weaverfamilylimousines.co.uk
P
IS FOR MODERN If you’re a thoroughly modern couple, there are plenty of ultra-chic new vehicles available from BMWs and Mercedes, to Rolls Royces and Audis.
IS FOR PHOTOS Check with your supplier exactly what’s included in the price quoted, as some will charge extra to wait for photos, whereas others will offer this as part of the service. You don’t want any nasty surprises to mess with your W-day schedule, so always best to make sure.
64
IS FOR NUMBERS If a large number of your guests need transport on the big day, why not look into hiring a coach or minibus.
O
IS FOR OPEN TOP For taking in the sites and waving to passers-by convertibles are a dream, but hold on to your freshly coiffed hair!
Q
IS FOR QUIRKY Just like the rest of your wedding day, your transport is something that can be tailored to reflect you as a couple. Think about your theme or hobbies and whether you can factor this in: quad bike, tractor, motorbike and sidecar, moped, race car, VW Beetle… the more personal the better. If alternative is your style, you’ll love Graveyard Limousines! Check out www. gravelimo.com
http://almphotography.co.uk
G
IS FOR GOLF BUGGY If you’re getting married at a sporting venue, ask if you can take a spin around the course for some quirky and memorable snaps.
R
T
R IS FOR RELIABLE One thing to bear in mind when opting for vintage and classic vehicles is their reliability. The last thing you want on your wedding day is to break down on your way to the ceremony. Find a reputable supplier, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about how they look after their vehicles. Plus, there are vintage-style cars that have a wonderful 1930s look, such as a Ford Bramwith or Beauford, but are in fact modern, so you have the best of both worlds.
TRANSPORT
S U
IS FOR TRAVEL TIME Carefully consider now long it will take to get from A to B. Just because your own car can make the trip in 10 minutes, doesn’t mean a horse and carriage or vintage car will. These modes of transport will be restricted on speed and may need to take an alternative, longer route. Also, check on the radius your supplier covers. They tend not to travel too far out of area with older vehicles.
IS FOR SPORTS CAR Enjoy a bit of highoctane fun on your wedding morning – certainly one way to make a grand entrance! Alternatively, why not surprise the groom and book one to collect him in the morning.
www.hannahlucyphotography.co.uk
IS FOR UNIFORM Look out for transport suppliers that offer chauffeurs dressed in full super-smart livery – an extra way to bring an element of elegance and grandeur to your big day.
https://nickifelthamphotography.com
VW Y X Z IS FOR VOLKSWAGEN Ah the retro-chic VW Campervan, we love them, as do a great many wedding couples across the land. We suggest https://busandbugvintageweddings.co.uk
W IS FOR WEATHER Be prepared! Make sure umbrellas are on board if it rains. We love those shots of brides exiting elegant cars under cover of a brolly held by a sharply dressed chauffeur. It’s so Downton Abbey!
IS FOR YEAR Many transport suppliers have a select few vehicles and make it their policy to book only one wedding per day so that they’re all yours and you’re not clock watching. This does mean that they’ll get booked up well in advance. So start looking early to avoid disappointment.
IS FOR ZOOM What could be more romantic that driving off into the sunset as newlyweds?
IS FOR XOXO Your big-day will pass by in a flash by which point you could well finish the day realising you’ve barely seen each other! A little alone time as you journey from ceremony to celebrations will be something you’ll cherish. Even if your big day is happening all in one location, ask your transport provider if they can factor in a short excursion for the both of you, post-ceremony. Take your photographer and you can also capture some great couple shots. 65
HOT TOPIC
Stellar wedmin advice from our panel of experts
SPRING IS IN THE AIR
We’d love a big-day bake to fit the relaxed springtime vibe of our wedding. What would you suggest? Everyone has different ideas about what their perfect cake might look like, so when deciding on your design you need to think about what reflects you as a couple. A naked or semi-naked cake might be perfect for you and your chosen theme. This has a more informal style that looks just right as the centrepiece at a relaxed wedding. It can be adorned with fruit, edible petals and flowers fitting in beautifully with a springtime theme. However, if you’d like something more elegant, a classic tiered cake with a spray of subtle handmade sugar flowers would be ideal. Yellow, light greens and soft oranges are the perfect colours to complement the season. Daffodils and tulips are gorgeous reminders that the chill of winter is over and that new life is beginning – a wonderful sentiment to share with your friends and family on your wedding day. Annie Rogers | Leading Lady Cakes | www.leadingladycakes.co.uk
NEW LIFE
How can we reflect the wonderful feel of springtime in our wedding flowers? Letting nature shine through your designs by using blooms only available during the spring will really give you that sense of the season. From the palest of pastels to bright and bold oranges and yellows, the best part about using spring flowers is the glorious scent they bring. Let your florist be creative with their design within your colour palette using textures and varieties that complement each other. Just by adding pops of delicate narcissi and brightly coloured anemones the hint of new beginnings becomes apparent. Also, dotting dainty planted spring bulbs around the venue, so full of promise, will keep your theme flowing. Rachel Matthews | Greenfingers www.greenfingersflorists.com 66
EXPERT ADVICE
PICTURE PERFECT
Planning will be the key here. Make a list of the areas you love and let your photographer know about them in your pre-wedding meeting. List them in order of importance in case you need to prioritise on the day. Think about your chosen style: is it modern, traditional or themed? This will also help your photographer to pick out any idyllic or unusual little corners that best suit your style. Try to visualise how you want to remember your special day. Do you want couple shots in front of a beautiful old bay window with plenty of natural light streaming in, or walking through the long grass hand in hand with your stunning venue in the background? Don’t worry about the weather spoiling your outdoor shots. Ask your venue in advance if they have wedding umbrellas and bring some colourful wellies with you just in case. There’s a great photo opportunity in everything when the venue is gorgeous. Finally, remember: a good photographer will capture the special moments and places throughout the day without you even realising.

FRESH AND FABULOUS MEANINGFUL MOMENTS What tips can you give on making an intimate wedding day super-special?
Surrounded by your closest family and friends you really can make a small, intimate wedding incredibly special. Everyone is so much more relaxed and you can give each guest a role to play, making them feel included every step of the way. Choose fun face masks for yourselves and your guests for the wedding ceremony and take time to select individually chosen favours for that personal touch. In the evening you can play games such as Mr and Mrs, and wedding bingo to get everyone involved, which is something that might not be practical at a large event. Group photos will show the connection you all have with one another. Plus, time can be spent on your couple shots and focusing on what it means to you to be married. Louisa Porter | Cottesmore Hotel Golf & Country Club www.cottesmoregolf.co.uk
How can we bring the feeling of springtime into our wedding food for the day? As winter closes its door, there’s a sense of new beginnings, so what better time of year to celebrate your latest adventure together? Spring conjures up images of green and yellow hues with pastel shades, so why not incorporate these into your wedding theme? A delicious soup made from locally-sourced wild garlic is perfect for this time of year. Alternatively, you could opt for beautiful fresh asparagus with pancetta as your opening course. Spring lamb is a favourite for this time of year and Sussex has some of the best organic grass-fed lamb in the country. Combine it with a medley of beautiful organic seasonal vegetables – steamed purple sprouting broccoli, roasted baby carrots and new potatoes. For dessert, delight in a delicious rhubarb Eton mess. The red stems of rhubarb will pop on your plate. Finally, a magnificent grazing board for the evening will really bring your seasonal theme home. Select a vibrant colour palette with colourful and tasty red and yellow vine tomatoes, cucumbers and spring onions with delicious Sussex artisan cheeses and meats – spring on a plate! AHEAD OF THE CURVE
What modern day trends can I incorporate into my big-day make-up look while maintaining a timeless feel?
eauty BQ&A
END THE TR T REPOR Look your big-day best with help from the professionals
HAIR TODAY…
I’d love an ultra-modern hair style for my big day. What’s hot right now? CWM beauty editor Kelly says: If 2020 taught us one thing it was how to chill the heck out! Let’s be honest we’re all happy to leave the house looking a lot less coiffed than we used to, and this ethos has translated to the aisle. Lived-in tresses with texture and softness are the way forward for 2021 and beyond. Brides are after a look that’s comfortable and reflective of their personalities. 84
Becky says: Some of my favourite trends this year are fluffy brows, glowing skin, a pop of colour on the eyes and bold lips. Make sure you choose the trends you love and feel confident wearing, then incorporate them into a classic make-up look to ensure your overall look maintains that timeless feel. Here are my top tips: ❤ I love keeping brows fluffy and natural by using a brow gel to enhance the arch already there. ❤ If you’re looking for glowing skin, use a hydrating foundation and make sure you pop some powder on your T-zone to get a fresh, rather than oily, look. ❤ A pop of colour on the eyes looks great, especially a soft, muted shade all over the eyelids for a wash of colour. I love to keep this look eyeliner-free, simply pairing the eyeshadow with some mascara and fresh, bronzed skin. ❤ Bold lips are a classic. I absolutely love adding this statement to evening make-up. One of my favourite things to do is return to the venue after the wedding breakfast and intensify the bride’s make-up by adding a bold red lip. She can then return to her guests, starting the party with a new look – classic and trendy.
MEET OUR EXPERT, BECKY FLYNN Professional make-up artist Becky specialises in bridal and occasion make-up focusing on soft, classic, stylish looks with delicate corrective details that complement her brides and photograph beautifully. Discover more at https://makeupbybeckyflynn.com
No longer should you be afraid to see a hair out of place. Think plenty of texturising spray and softly pinned buns. We’re absolutely delighted to see hair accessories growing in popularity amongst our brides, and with such an abundance of choice you can’t go wrong. Everything from a white satin or pearlencrusted headband to a delicately bejewelled hair vine is in. You may even choose to minimise or forego jewellery altogether in favour of a statement head piece. For the modern boho bride, why not consider a super-cool fedora or panama hat with fresh flower band? Be creative and enjoy!
Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.
Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com
TRIED AND TESTED
I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.
PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love
Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.
No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper.
Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on! 85
BERRY NICE
Natura Siberica has launched an affordable vegan-certified range of beauty products based exclusively on altai oblepikha berries, a rich source of vitamin C. From face masks to serums, the C-Berrica collection has it all. Plus, its BHA acids improve skin texture speeding up cell renewal and deep cleans pores. Discover the full collection at www.naturasiberica.co.uk
No need for needles! CLEAN AND CLEAR
We all know about the barrage of environmental abuse our facial skin battles on a daily basis, but what about our scalps? They too are faced with the impact of sweat, pollution, and various styling products. Centred creative director Kieran Tudor says, “Good scalp health is crucial for strong, healthy, beautiful hair, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to hair care regimes.” A deeply nourishing blend of olive, argan and hemp oils, Centred En-Root Scalp Treatment replenishes moisture to dry brittle hair, while exfoliating the scalp and removing product build up and dead skin cells. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com
Self-tanning fave Skinny Tan has unveiled its latest product – Notox Beauty Elixir. It’s a smoothing, plumping facial serum specifically formulated to supply your skin with instant anti-aging effects and a glowing gradual selftan. Using stoechiol naturally derived from butterfly lavender, it immobilises wrinkles and re-densifies the epidermis leading to a rapid and lasting reduction in the depth of express lines. So, say “no” to Botox, and “yes” to Notox! Getting Zoom-ready and embracing the minimal make-up look has never been easier. Notox Beauty Elixir is available at www.skinnytan.co.uk, priced at £19.99.

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.
Absolutely
FLAWLESS
Our beauty editor caught up with Jess Wright to discuss wedding plans and just how she achieves that perfect complexion

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately
that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.
Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. Retreat to ty the ci
Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital
A
s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.
STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a
whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.
EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike
that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.
EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
