Tilgate Park Weddings YOUR VENUE YOUR WAY

OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS BEAUTIFUL WEDDING GARDEN • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • MAZE • Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats. EVENTS ARENA At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away. Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

A HONEYMOON IN ST LUCIA

We’ve been taking a look at the morning preparations in this issue’s shoots. It can be a fun and memorable part of the day spent with your inner circle, or even a time for quiet reflection. So think about devoting some planning time towards it, as well as talking to your photographer about capturing those all-important images. 7

ho else can’t believe it’s springtime already? It’s such a special time of year and in 2022 we all get to appreciate it so much more given the last two we’ve spent locked up! This issue we’ve got the usual blend of wedspiration from real weddings and shoots, to expert advice and ideas including a look into the world of wedding transport. We’ve also got some oh-so chic ideas for fab finishing touches to complete the look of your day. In our own wedding world here at CMW towers, bride Melissa has been turning her attention to her best gals and we’ve now got our dresses, if not in our hands then on order. It was a bumpy ride, but thanks to Melissa’s unending patience, we got there. We’re now looking at the even more fun stuff such as accessories, shoes, hair and make-up, which has led myself, my fellow bridesmaids and the bride herself to ponder the matter of just whose job it is to foot the bill for the glam? This in no small part is due to the fact none of us seem able to get the lovely Melissa to take one single penny from us towards it. So, when Fragrance Direct told me they’d teamed up with wedding planner Hannah Rose to discuss just this matter, I was all ears! Thinking about the glam bill, Fragrance Direct asked Hannah whether it was nearlyweds’ responsibility to pay for everyone or just themselves? She answered unequivocally, “Definitely everyone. If they’ve asked for people to be part of their day, the majority of the time this will fall to the couple to pay. Otherwise, their loved ones may be put off joining the wedding party. Some bridesmaids and groomsmen might be happy to contribute, but it’s always encouraged that the couple plan this into their budget and offer to pay for the basics such as hair and make-up if they want them to have it done. The cost will vary depending on the hair stylist and make-up artist, but I’d advise to allocate a minimum of £150-£200 per person for anyone who isn’t the bride or groom.” So, there we have it. We shall immediately cease arguing with the bride and accept her kindness gracefully. I’ll leave you now to enjoy this issue and don’t forget if you’d like to see your own wedding day gracing the pages of Your Sussex Wedding, get in touch with us via www.your-sussex.wedding/get-involved Enjoy and keeeep planning!

FAMILY FUN

BACK TO NATURE

If wedding planning and the stresses that life brings are getting on top of you, check out Historic Sussex Hotels’ forest bathing reconnection experience. One of you will set off to enjoy a deeply immersive two-hour forest bathing session with guru Helena Skoog, while the other heads up to The Spread Eagle Spa to relax in the indoor heated pool and enjoy a spa treatment. You’ll later reunite over a candle-lit dinner in the restaurant. Inspired by the Japanese art of shinrin-yoku, forest bathing is the practice of slowing down and totally immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the forest. Its goal is to draw on the theraputic powers of nature to reduce stress and leave you with a profound sense of peace. Expert guide Helena will lead you through a series of sensory invitations that allows you to connect in the present moment with yourself and your natural surroundings. The experience costs £155 and sets off from The Spread Eagle at 4.30pm on the following dates: 9th May, 20th June, 4th July, 6th September, 11th October. For further information check out www.hshotels.co.uk/spread-eagle

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens has created a programme of year-round entertainment for visitor groups, families and others planning days out in 2022. With 200 years of history and an extensive campaign to restore the Grade I listed gardens, visitors are assured of plenty to see and do on the 240-acre estate. From 9th to 24th April Leonardslee is hosting an outdoor Easter trail, winding through the beautiful gardens. Children can go on an adventure hunt, and explore while having a good time with friends and family. Other family-friendly events include the Spring Sounds, ten evenings of live music during May, with an eclectic mix of jazz, swing, opera, classical and flamenco. Also, the Floral Fringe Fair on 4th and 5th June is a fun event with a vintage twist, featuring plants and food for sale, street dining, coffee, gin, artists and makers, classic cars, steampunk, singing, vintage stalls and a beer tent. DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Following the huge impact the pandemic has had on community centres, charity projects and local suppliers in the area, Boxgrove Village Hall has announced a one-day wedding fair to showcase Sussex wedding talent. Taking place in the quaint village of Boxgrove, just outside of Chichester on Sunday 15th May 2022 from 12pm-4pm, the event aims to support the thriving wedding community while helping you find local businesses to assist in creating your dream day. Boxgrove Village Hall is a rural community centre, which holds weddings throughout the year. Ideal for those looking for a warm, welcoming, countryside venue to host their special day, its reasonable hire fees allow you to hire it for the entire weekend allowing for plenty of preparation time. The wedding fair offers a fantastic opportunity to see the venue dressed with tables laid out and decorated, and it promises to be an immersive way to visualise your wedding day there. Plus, the events team will be present on the day to answer any questions you may have. The fair is free to attend and highlights include a free glass of prosecco and free entry into a raffle to win some fantastic prizes from the exhibiting suppliers. Hall manager Sally says, "Boxgrove community centre is a fantastic venue: modern and well equipped, and it's in such a quaint little village that some people living in Chichester don't even know it exists! We can't wait to get the hall buzzing with wedding planning and ideas. We have some amazing suppliers dressing the hall to make it an inspiring day out for everyone who visits." A LITTLE BIT OF LOVE

The Old Chapel at All Saints has launched an initiative to help spread some love. Built and run by nuns on the ethos of helping those whose life journey had been touched by misfortune, The Chapel was used as a place where love for others was the core value. This message is still at the heart of the Chapel today. Acknowledging that the last two years have been an awful time for many wishing to marry, the team would like to offer one couple complimentary ceremony hire at this beautiful venue. This would include venue hire, worth £2,000 and a prosecco toast each for up to 60 guests, worth £360. This has now been extended to include two further couples who would be given their venue hire at 50 per cent off. The ceremonies must be booked within the next 12 months. You can nominate yourselves or be nominated by others. To be considered for this initiative simply email allsaintsweddingsandevents@ gmail.com with a short summary of no more than 250 words explaining why you should be considered for this wonderful opportunity. Closing date for applicants is 31st May 2022. Also check out www.allsaintschapeleastbourne.org

hloe and Ray met, covered in neon paint, following their university’s freshers week foam party. And from celebratory beginnings came a festive proposal. While putting up the decorations at Christmas in 2019 Ray produced several tree baubles he’d made featuring photos of the two of them. When they were finished they stepped back to admire the tree, Michael Buble’s Christmas songs playing in the background – “I remember thinking what a lovely moment it was,” Chloe says. But it was about to get even better, as Ray announced he had one more decoration to add. He handed her a handmade box, which contained a hand-painted ceramic disc with a Christmas tree on one side and on the other, as she turned it over to discover, were the words, “Will you marry me?” As she looked up she found Ray on one knee holding out her engagement ring, and somewhere amongst the happy tears Chloe managed to say, “Yes.” The couple looked at a number of venues before they settled on Blackstock Country Estate. “It was by far the best and the most comfortable. It was warm and cosy, but also beautiful. We both grew up in the country and knew we wanted a countryside wedding, so it had everything we wanted,” Chloe explains. Join us as the bride gives us the lowdown on the big day, 18th October 2021...

LOOKING THE PART “The style of my dress wasn’t one I’d even considered until I tried it on, but it just looked right and I fell in love with it.” Chloe remembers. She accessorised with a rhinestone belt, silver sparkly shoes and a foliage and white flower crown. It was also important to her to wear her nan’s butterfly brooch – “She passed away recently but would have been a very special guest at our wedding,” the bride explains. While each member of Chloe’s bride tribe wore a different style, the gowns were all sage green and floaty. “My bridesmaids picked the look they wanted, so they all felt comfortable and individual,” she shares. Ray wore a navy suit, which looked super-smart accessorised with a sage green tie to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. In order to stand out, the groom’s buttonhole was that little bit more special than the groomsmen’s, who all wore matching suits.

SETTING THE SCENE Having embraced a countryside theme with a palette of sage green and pastels, the bride chose wild flowers for her bouquet and the bridesmaids’. The latter then featured at the wedding breakfast as centrepieces. The posies were popped into glass jars, which also held the table numbers and sat on top of a large log slice at the centre of each table. Two smaller jars decorated with hessian and lace surrounded them, accompanied by tea lights, wooden-heart confetti and eco-friendly pastel paper confetti. Cute little hessian bag wedding favours also adorned the tables. These were labelled “Chloe & Ray were meant to bee,” and filled with a flower bomb and wild flower seeds. A little wooden bee sat on the front of each bag and the whole thing was eco-friendly, which was important to the couple. The place names, which also fit the theme beautifully, featured a sprig of sage green foliage and slotted into rustic wooden holders. The big-day bake boasted three tiers of lemon and poppyseed, carrot cake and cream and jam. It was all covered with a thick layer of buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers to complement the bride’s bouquet. Chloe assures us it tasted incredible! 27

The ceremony featured a nod to the season with clusters of pumpkins at either end of the aisle and autumn leaves, which the bride collected the day before, scattered along the runner on either side. The venue’s restaurant took care of the wedding breakfast. Chloe tells us, “The options were fantastic and catered for all dietary needs. Guests commented that it was the best wedding food they’d ever eaten.”

REAL WEDDINGS

CELEBRATE IN STYLE When time came for the speeches, Chloe’s mum and dad formed a double act showing photos of their daughter on a big screen. They were followed by best man Dan who hilariously hosted a game show he’d created, where all guests could take part by holding up cards and guessing the mischief the groom had gotten up to over the years. “It was brilliant and filled the wedding breakfast with roars of laughter,” the bride remembers. The newlyweds shared their first dance to Michael Buble’s Everything. The dancefloor provided one of Chloe’s highlights as she enjoyed so much dancing with her mum, bridesmaids and flowergirl while seeing their evening guests arrive.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Chloe tells us, “Receiving an unexpected card from Ray while I was getting ready, then seeing him for the first time at the end of the aisle were very special moments, as was calling him my husband for the first time. “The whole day was so relaxed. The venue did a fantastic job in making everything flow smoothly. The food was absolutely incredible and the staff were attentive and helpful too.”

“Weirdly, the rain helped to make our day special. I was dreading it, but it made our photos look incredible!” – Chloe

REAL WEDDINGS

GOING FOR

Charlee and Sam tied the knot on 27th August 2021... Images courtesy of Jacob Malinski Photography

33

I

t seems that Charlee and Sam’s paths were always destined to cross eventually as they’d been on the periphery of each others lives for so long before they officially met. While they knew of one another at school, being in different years, they never really spoke and when they started working at the same company, they were placed in different teams. “We’d seen each other several times on work and non-work related nights out,” Charlee explains. It was at one such event that Sam finally decided to approach Charlee and they got on so well, they decided to set up a first date. It was a wonder that Sam managed to keep his proposal plans from Charlee, given the preparation involved – we’re told, she usually finds out everything he tries to hide! In the summer of 2019 the pair were visiting their favourite holiday hotspot, Lanzarote. They took a walk to a special spot where they’d placed a love lock on a rail during a previous trip, only this time Charlee found another one right next to it, emblazoned with the words, “Will you marry me?” The newly engaged Charlee and Sam loved the idea of getting married “We experienced a outdoors and found themselves attracted to rollercoaster of emotions Cottesmore Hotel Golf and Country Club, which also allowed them to host the whole on the day including day in one place. “It turned out to be the nerves, tears, laughter... perfect venue for our wedding and we couldn’t be happier,” Charlee shares. The nerves weren’t as bad Join us as the bride shares her memories as we thought though, and of the big day...

we both ended up having the best day of our lives.”

34

STAYING NETURAL Charlee and Sam enlisted the help of

REAL WEDDINGS “My bouquet, the bridesmaids bouquets, corsages, buttonholes and ceremony flowers all tied in with our neutral and greenery theme.”

“We opted for a threetiered cake with different flavours decorated with flowers – it tasted unbelievable. Our wedding breakfast was a starter of pâté, followed by beef wellington for main course and chocolate delice to finish.”

Enchanted Events and Prop Hire to bring together their ideas for the centrepieces. The top table was decorated with a beautiful, tall rectangular gold stand with white and champagne flowers and eucalyptus. Using the same flowers, the other tables had circular gold stands. Plus, further small details were added to the tables to tie together the theme including gold tea light holders, a vase with matching flowers, the table name and a gin bottle filled with lights. The super-cute wedding favours were mini envelopes containing wildflower seeds. The table plan was made from photo frames of varying sizes painted gold, while the place names were made from brown card and stood in mini wooden stands in keeping with the netural theme. The table names, each one a different gin, were made from the same materials as the invitations and placed in gold stands. Other décor included a welcome sign,

order of the day, and a flower arch for the ceremony lawn.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS Charlee tells us, “After trying a few fitted dresses, I eventually chose an A-line gown from designer Nicole Milano. I had off-the-shoulder sleeves added, which I think completed it. I then accessorised with a beautiful dried flower crown. “Sam wore a cream dogtooth three-piece suit with gold accessories, including a gold paisley bow tie. The best man wore the same while the groomsmen chose their own suits to complement the ties Sam gave them. So, we had quite a few colours including navy, grey and brown. “The bridesmaids also chose their own dresses from all different places. I asked them to find neutral-coloured full-length gowns, which all ended up looking perfectly harmonious.” 35

“My top planning tip would be to keep everything on a spreadsheet. We had supplier details, budget, checklists, tasks, seating plans and so on. It was useful and really helped with the organisation.” HITTING THE DANCEFLOOR “Our band, Riptide, performed an acoustic, normal and DJ sets, as well as our first dance song, which they learned especially for the occasion. Everyone absolutely loved them and no one sat down all night,” the bride remembers. She continues, “We both got lifted onto the shoulders of our guests on the dancefloor, but what they didn’t realise was that every time they bounced Sam in the air, he hit his head on the ceiling. We’ll blame that for the sore head in the morning!”

wings of love ON THE

Amy and Ben’s venue styling involved a subtle avian twist Images courtesy of Bill Farnham Photography

A

my joined a majorette troupe aged 13, where she met Ben’s sister and before long she was introduced to Ben himself. They dated a couple of times during their teens, but by and large their relationship was a plutonic friendship. Until that was they reached the age of 17 and loved ones began to see what the pair thus far hadn’t. They encouraged them to get together again and this time Amy found herself falling for Ben’s cheekiness and the fact that he never failed to make her laugh. Having been given the inside track from Ben, we know the reason he made her laugh so often is that he loved to hear her giggle! Love blossomed and they’d been together almost 10 years when Ben proposed. During a break in the Cotswolds, the couple went for a walk and 38

made a stop by a lake to watch the swans. Ben turned to Amy and said, “Would you marry me? To which she replied, “When you have a ring!” So, he took the ring out of his jacket pocket and presented her with it. You see, Amy had suspected the proposal was imminent as he’d left the ring box laying on the bed at one point, and she had to pretend she hadn’t seen it! Amy and Ben viewed several wedding venues, but it was The Ravenswood they fell in love with. “It has such beautiful grounds and although we hadn’t imagined getting married outside, when we saw the Little Castle we knew it was where we wanted to say ‘I do,’” Amy tells us. Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day...

REAL WEDDINGS

I chose Olivia, which I bought at Meryl Bridal. I fell in love with it instantly. I love the classic, plain style and wanted an A-line or ballgown silhouette as it’s not something you’d typically wear. I accessorised with a delicate tiara to add some sparkle and a two-tier veil.

My bouquet featured big white and deep red dahlias, white and pale pink roses and lots of foliage.

Ben and his groomsmen wore navy three-piece suits with a light tan check and accessorised with burgundy ties and pocket squares. Ben’s waistcoat was tan, which allowed him to stand out a little more.

The ceremony was the most magical and special part of the day – experiencing all the emotions, seeing everyone’s faces and finally marrying each other. After the ceremony we had outdoor games – luckily the weather was beautiful. Wherever we go we find a crazy golf course to go to, and even had a game after we got engaged, so it seemed like a nobrainer to hire one for our wedding. We also had swing ball, bowls and giant Connect 4.

The bridesmaids wore floor-length burgundy dresses with a small sparkly belt. All of the tables were named after types of birds and the place names were written on lasercut bird shapes.

39

The bottom and top layers of our four-tiered cake were chocolate, the second tier was lemon, and the third was coffee.

Our metal table plan was shaped like a birdcage with white rose fairylights wrapped around it. The cake topper featured a silhouette of a motorcyclist kissing his bride, as we’re big fans of motorbike racing and Ben has raced them in the past.

To incorporate a dash of opulence we had charger plates with gold beading around the outside. The chairs were dressed with burgundy sashes tied diagonally across them with a bow. 40

Our centrepieces were rustic birdcages containing a candle and red roses. Each one was placed on a round mirror.

The catering was all taken care of by The Ravenswood. They provided canapés after the ceremony, a three-course wedding breakfast and the evening buffet. The food was amazing!

REAL WEDDINGS

We had a kids table with lots of games as well as activity books including colouring, dot to dots and mazes.

We planned to go to New Zealand on honeymoon, but with Covid getting in the way our trip has been postponed. We did manage to get away back to the Cotswolds though before heading to Silverstone to camp and watch MotoGP. Probably not most people’s idea of a minimoon, but it was perfect for us!

The team at The Ravenswood were absolutely amazing, as were our photographer Bill and videographer Carla. Without all of them by our side we wouldn’t have felt as comfortable as we did.

H

ands up who’s excited about the new series of Bridgerton? We definitely are and we’re not alone. With the success of the Netflix show’s first season came a resurgence in all things Regency style, which is now permeating the world of weddings. This glorious shoot, tells the story of the quiet moments between a bride and her suppliers as she prepares for her wedding day, bringing with it an air of the period’s elegance and romance. Meanwhile, Buxted Park and its grounds offered the team the perfect backdrop to incorporate their Bridgerton-inspired elements in a modern way. Make-up artist and shoot coordinator Lucy Meyer says, “As a make-up artist I’m often the first one in the door and the last one out. I get to witness the bride before anyone else arrives, as she gathers her thoughts and seeks to calm her nerves. Together with the amazing team we were able to showcase all of this and the intricate, tiny details of a love letter, table settting and dress change for the evening. For me the images echo the relationship I have with my reallife brides.” 51

FINISHING TOUCHES

The

Finishing touches to complete your day

N

o doubt your planning checklist will already feature most of the all-important elements that immediately spring to mind the moment anyone says “wedding.” You’ve got your venue, flowers, cake, photographer, attire, catering, and so on. But it’s those extra special finishing touches that’ll make your personalities shine through and make this celebration of your love one that everyone present will remember forever. The even better news? These added touches don’t need to break to bank! We reached out to the county’s talented suppliers for their most creative ideas, sure to inspire you.

“Balloons are often an afterthought for venue décor, but we believe they have the potential to be the star! Their ability to transform a cold dark corner, to a bright, vibrant, visual feast is unrivalled, adding cohesion and a finishing touch to any big day.” – Jamie Ashby, http://boutiqueballoonstudio.com

“If budget allows, create that wow factor element as guests arrive. It could be a floral arch or hanging chandelier for example.” – Sam Green, www.thecrazydaisycompany.co.uk

FOCAL POINTS

“Statement pieces are a must, be it a neon sign or light-up letters. They can also create amazing shots.” – Sara Ellis, www.tohaveandtohireweddings.com 55

FUN TIMES! “Make sure your DJ knows how to finish off an evening party with some high energy music that your guests will love to sing along to. Imagine them all in a big circle dancing around you and singing at the top of their tipsy voices.” – Brian Mole, www.dancemix.co.uk

https://schryverphoto.com

“It's a joy to see the bride and bridesmaids enjoying getting ready. Often they're wearing something that lets us all know they're a gang and that today is W-day! Once everyone's hair and make-up is done it's time for the dresses – surely that group will never all look so beautiful and happy in one place at one time again? The morning is a time to relax with a glass of bubbly before enjoying the rest of the day.” – Gail Kittle, www.sullingtonmanorfarm.co.uk

“Work with your DJ in advance to ensure they know exactly which music you and your guests love to dance to. A few well curated lists help here. Don't forget the songs you love to dance to are often different from your favourite songs.” – Brian, www.dancemix.co.uk

“Adding handmade sugar flowers to your cake will create a unique look. What's more, they can be kept for many years as a keepsake to remember your cake long after it's been eaten.” – Annie Bennett, https://leadingladycakes.co.uk

“Continue the theme of your day through your cake or decorate it with the same styling as the venue. Include bespoke models of the two of you, your wedding colours, flowers, or even take inspiration from your wedding finery.” – Carrie, www.carriespartycakes.co.uk

“The cake-cutting ceremony is a tradition that's stuck around. It's also one of the few opportunities your guests will have to take photos of you before the party starts.” – Carrie, www.carriespartycakes.co.uk

“We love a wow-factor flower crown. Not the usual dainty circlet, but one that might even outshine your bouquet!” – Petra, www.sussexflorals.co.uk www.jasmineandrews.co.uk

“Go bold and avoid traditional long and low table arrangements. Here, we used snippets of colourful flowers in fun and quirky vases to create a stand-out top table.” – Petra Beaton, www.sussexflorals.co.uk

“Reuse your ceremony floral designs in the reception. I always like couples to make the most of their flowers.” – Sam, www.thecrazydaisycompany.co.uk

“Have fresh flowers everywhere! Sullington Tithe Barn is surrounded by roses and lavender so when you add floral centrepieces, buttonholes and bouquets it brings a sense of togetherness. Flowers are personal, but we think that either something big and bold or masses of greenery and floral clouds make beautiful barn architecture sing.” – Gail, www.sullingtonmanorfarm.co.uk

etting ready is such a big part of a wedding day for the bride and despite being a three- to five-hour portion of the day it can often be overlooked when planning. So, I wanted to showcase the wonderful suppliers who help make a bride glow on her big day,” shoot coordinator Sarah Domm of Garter Me Good tells us. As a lover of all things Art Deco she set out to create a wedding morning shoot to reflect the style, elegance and glamour of the roaring 20s and opted for a colour palette of teal and blush. The shoot also showcases the wonderful new bridal suite at Selden Barns in Worthing. A countryside venue, it boasts a variety of charming historical buildings, beautiful grounds and plenty of space for the bridal party to enjoy their preparations.

Love and CARRIAGE We caught up with some of the county’s transport suppliers to find out how to arrive in style

THE ASHDOWN CLASSIC WEDDING CAR COLLECTION

usually the owner.

01342 810 698 | www.tacwcc.co.uk

The Ashdown Classic Wedding Car Collection is a group of local car enthusiasts who are passionate about vintage and classic cars and have been providing owner-driven wedding cars in Sussex, Surrey and Kent for more than a decade. We spoke to Nick Lacey-Hulbert to find out more. What vehicles are in your fleet? Everything from Austin to VW, Alvis to Vauxhall, with Rolls Royces and other classic marques from 1905 to 1973. How many people can you transport on the big day? Some cars can take up to four or five, but we don't like to crowd the couple on their big day. Each car only does one wedding per day, so we’re never in a hurry to get away to another job, and there are no hidden time or mileage extras in our prices. Do you offer any added extras? We provide ribbon and flowers, as well as a suited and booted driver,

What can we expect? We always pre-plan the routes and give timings for departures, which allow for last minute hitches. We’re happy, time and distance permitting, to do a trip before the bride or groom with others from the wedding party. We’ll arrive well before departure time so there’s no panic, and we can take a leisurely drive to give you a chance to relax. We always arrive just before the ceremony time for church weddings and 15 minutes before civil ceremonies to meet the registrars. We’ll wait for your ceremony to finish and then take the two of you for a drive giving you a few moments peace and quiet whether your wedding is all in one location or at another reception venue. We’re never in a hurry to get away, giving ample time for photographs, but when everyone is in the reception we’ll take our leave. What’s your top tip when it comes to booking wedding transport? See if you can get married on a weekday, everything will be cheaper and availability better. Also, don’t leave finding a car to the last minute. After all the effort you’ve gone to to plan a fantastic day, you don’t want to arrive in a standard taxi!

WHITE LONDON TAXI WEDDING CARS

01293 406 751 | www.whitelondontaxis.com

White London Taxis was established in 2004 with a goal to make fine quality examples of London’s unique cabs available to brides and grooms. Gary Ellard tells us more. What vehicles are in your fleet? In total the fleet now consists of five exceptional examples of the iconic London taxi, covering the 1955 vintage style FX4 London cab to the more contemporary TX4 model still in service today. How many people can you transport on the big day? All vehicles offer space for five passengers, in a rear passenger compartment with the chauffeur separated in their own driver’s compartment. The face-to-face passenger seating incorporated in the design of these vehicles allows the wedding party to easily converse on their way to the wedding. With retractable seating when not in full occupation the taxis also provide a large square floor space, which along with large wide-opening doors, make them perfectly wedding-dress friendly.

Do you offer any added extras? Traditional vehicle ribbons, grill bow and flowers come as standard for all clients. As does a driver in traditional chauffeur attire with a cap. Those having their preparations, ceremony and reception at different locations are also provided with champagne for their post-ceremony journey. Also available is the option either to have the vehicle for transport to the ceremony or to retain it for pictures. This is ideal if your “I dos” and celebrations are at the same location. Don’t forget, these vehicles will be the place to gather final thoughts, share private moments with the loved one giving you away as well as with your new spouse. These short drives away from it all will be so memorable. What can we expect? The taxis are priced on a duration hire basis rather than distance, which offers additional flexibility. They can often accommodate two trips to the ceremony, bridesmaids then bridal travel. They’re also able to take a scenic route onwards to the reception, allowing guests to arrive first. What’s your top tip when it comes to booking wedding transport? Leaving the vehicle at the ceremony is one of those great photographic moments. It’s amazing how the height of the seat from the floor can assist you in doing this gracefully. Look for something where the seat isn’t too low to the floor, and has handles you can grip for an effortless exit.

LOLA THE VW CAMPERVAN

01444 891578 | www.lolathevwcampervan.co.uk What vehicles are in your fleet? Just one VW T2 Campervan, Lola is our pride and joy. How many people can you transport on the big day? Up to six. Two in the front with the driver and four in the back. We can offer additional trips for extra guests if needed. Do you offer any added extras? We offer a glass of bubbly for the happy couple after the ceremony, and a romantic drive if the ceremony is at same site as the reception, plus vintage-style decorations.

What can we expect? We are a husband-and-wife team who only do a limited number of weddings per year to ensure a personal service. Jacqueline will help plan everything in advance, and Mike will be there waiting with a friendly and reassuring smile to take you to your ceremony. After the “I dos,” we suggest a confetti line leading the happy couple into Lola our VW, where you’ll be handed a cold glass of bubbly and be whisked off for a romantic drive. Mike knows Sussex’s most picturesque spots, so you can relax and take in the day, or bring your photographer for a photoshoot before being dropped off at your reception. What’s your top tip when it comes to booking wedding transport? Always plan in extra travel time, especially if booking a vintage vehicle. We can always drive around the block a few times if we’re a little early!

HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

SHOT SELECTION

We’re clueless when it comes to photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture?

https://hanavenn.co.uk

Wedding photography can certainly appear stressful to couples when planning their big day, you don’t want to miss out on that perfect shot because you forgot to ask your photographer to capture it. Most professionals will give you the opportunity to have a meeting with them before the big day to discuss the type of images you want. My advice would be to start making a list of your must haves. Have a look on Pinterest or Instagram for some inspiration, and even search your venue’s

hashtag so you can have a look at what other photographers have come up with. Many wedding photographers have their favourite staple poses that work well with all couples, but don’t be afraid to ask for something they haven’t done before – I’m sure they’ll be up for a challenge. At the end of the day, this is your big day and these are your photos. They’re something you’ll look back on for the rest of your life, so you want them to be everything you’ve ever dreamed of and tell the story of your beautiful day from start to finish. Ami Hammond Weddings, https://amihammondweddings.co.uk

WHAT’S HOT?

What are the latest wedding trends for 2022? Beautiful brights are on the rise. After the postponement of many weddings due to the pandemic, lots of couples are embracing the colours of the rainbow to ensure the most uplifting day possible. Even if you’re not on board with employing the full paint box in your styling, this vivacious trend is simple to weave in, from a bouquet of vibrant blooms to bridesmaid dresses in an array of hues and ribbons cascading from your venue’s beams. A pop of colour can be as bold or as delicate as you wish. For several years we’ve seen a penchant for bringing the outside in. However, in a historically Edwardian move, couples are turning the tables and taking home comforts into the great outdoors for both their ceremony and reception – think outdoor chandeliers, cosy sofas, twinkling fairylights and luxurious fabrics. Our Secret Garden plays into this perfectly with plenty of scope to embellish the pergola and benches with throws and lighting. Mariella Fleming, https://southendbarns.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

AN INVESTMENT PIECE

My wedding dress is quite simple, so I’m looking to make a statement with my jewellery. What would you suggest? To make a statement with jewellery I’d recommend a necklace such as the one pictured (stock number: 06-01-0197, £4,330). Sure to catch the eye, it exudes class and elegance. This particular necklace has an adjustable length that can be tailored to any neckline with an articulated diamond-set centre piece. Featuring 1.15ct of diamonds and set in 18ct white gold, the floral design radiates bridal beauty. Each section moves on its own and glistens in the light. It would be beautifully complemented with matching drop earrings. An amazing choice for your wedding day, it could also be worn for a number of occasions, which is an important consideration when investing in wedding jewellery. Sure to bring back wonderful memories and the magic of your big day every time you put it on, such a special item could allow you to start a family tradition and pass it down as a treasured heirloom for future generations to wear.

IN THE COUNTRY

We’re pretty open minded when it comes to the type of venue we choose for our big day. What are the benefits of barn venues in particular? Barns instantly have the wow factor even before you step into them. They offer a welcoming feel particularly when they’re older original structures, which ooze a sense of history, character and beauty. Brick and flint, exposed beams, period features... what more could you wish for? Barns offer a real natural and raw beauty that you

can’t find in other types of venues, exuding a wonderful character and a sense of space and calm. Being among nature surrounded by trees naturally makes everyone feel instantly relaxed. Flexible and large open spaces are always a big hit too. Cissbury Barns for example gives you the whole package – a stunning estate and countryside setting hidden in the South Downs that’s exclusive to you. Helen Trigg, https://cissbury.com 67

Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Melissa x

www.chrisblackle

.co.uk dgephotography

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got

engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.

BRIDE’S DIARY

VENUE

PHOTOGRAPHER

❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.

❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.

FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.

WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 69

Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals HERE COME THE CURLS

My big day is in the summer and my hair can be prone to frizz when it’s humid. What can I do to combat this? Chloe says: If you know your hair is prone to being frizzy or dropping out due to humidity, it’s worth considering hairstyles that are more structured, particularly up-dos. You can still achieve a whimsical, undone look with an up-do, as the pinning of such styles allows for more product use, securely keeping curls and smoothness in place. Alternatively, if you have a down or half up/half down style in mind, I’d suggest going for a more textured look over something smooth as the curls will hide any frizz that may develop throughout your wedding day. Regardless of which style you opt for, it always helps to prep the hair properly: use smoothing and oil-infused shampoos, conditioner and serums and be sure to blow dry hair smooth as opposed to rough drying, to give yourself a good base for whichever style you choose.

I LOVE HUE

I don’t want to wear white or ivory, but still want to look bridal. What options do I have? Debbie says: If you don’t like the idea of ivory, many wedding dress manufacturers offer subtle alternatives such as blush, rose pink or champagne. There are also plenty of more informal options that can be ordered in lots of colours from dusky pink, through to royal blue for anyone wanting to stand out. If you like the idea of being different, why not consider a floral wedding dress instead? The dress pictured is called Jacinta and is by Romantica of Devon – a great choice for barn or country wedding venues.

BRUSH UP

Can you tell me about airbrush foundation? What are the benefits of wearing this versus normal foundation on my wedding day? Alison says: I’ve been airbrushing for more than 10 years and highly recommend airbrush foundation for bridal make-up. Most of my brides choose this over traditional foundation as spraying the product through an airbrush atomises it making the particles of make-up tiny. And because they’re much smaller than when conventionally applied, they’re less visible creating a flawless finish. I use Airbase Ultra Foundation (www.airbasemakeup.com). It’s silicone based, which makes it heat resistant, non-stick and pliable. The silicone doesn’t clog pores and allows your skin to breathe, giving you an ultra-durable foundation that lasts all day. It also contains vitamin A, which improves the skin’s elasticity and anti-oxidant vitamin E, which helps fight free radicals that age the skin. The seven shades can be intermixed to create the perfect blend, plus blusher, highlighter and contour can be applied through the airbrush too. There are also hygiene benefits to this technique. Fingers, sponges and brushes all have the potential to spread bacteria across the face, but spraying avoids this.

Recycling in the beauty industry is notoriously difficult, but here’s a clever invention by award-winning eco-pencil company Sprout World, designed not only to reduce waste, but to give something beautiful and useful back to the planet – recycling at its finest I have to say! Introducing Sprout Makeup Pencils (£9.95), the world’s first zero-waste plantable make-up pencils. Yep, plantable! CHILLED-OUT SKIN

Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese medicine and ayurvedic remedies to help mitigate the effects of stress on the body, and until recently have mostly been used in herbal supplements and teas to regulate stress levels. But they could also offer the solution to stressed-out skin. MARA Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque (£48) contains aswagandha, a skin-strengthening herb and adaptogen powered by antioxidants, which works to fight free radicals, boost hydration and soothe stressed-out, blemish-prone skin. Find it at www.cultbeauty.co.uk

BYE, BYE DRY

Have the ravages of winter left your skin dry, dull, sensitive, flaky and tight? As we embrace the spring, get your glow back with Q+A Snow Algae Intensive Face Cream (£12). If, like me, you’re reaching for Google, allow me to explain. Snow algae, also known as watermelon snow, is a species of green algae containing astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant great at improving dryness, sun damage and protecting against free radicals. I’ve only been using it for a couple of days and my dry skin is already showing signs of improvement. Find it at www.qandaskin.com
