Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats.

EVENTS ARENA At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metresOutsideaway.the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

8WIN!

Get your woofer dressed for the occasion with a palette-matching floral collar, lead or bow tie.

W-day is imminent! As the County Wedding Magazines editorial crew prepare to see our beloved senior editor Melissa become a Mrs, we can’t help but be niggled by at least a small sense of shock at just how quickly the big day has come around. Something, I’ve no doubt you’re all experiencing too as your own weddings draw closer. Christmas Day 2020 feels like only yesterday, when my fellow bridesmaid, Olivia, and I bombarded Melissa with WhatsApp messages: “Has he done it yet? Has he done it yet?” We knew the proposal was imminent you see, and were more than just a tad excited! Boy, have we had an adventure together since: the tears of joy at being asked to be bridesmaids (“Are you sure you want me?”), the fun of shopping for the dresses, and the hilarity of the hen dos (yes plural, she deserves it). The past year-and-a-half has seen us grow closer as friends, not just Melissa, Olivia and I – the three amigos; but also with our gorgeous fellow bridesmaid Nolwenn and the groom, dear Dave. Weddings have a habit of doing that don’t they? Of course, they’re a celebration of love between the all-important couple, but more than that, they allow a much wider expression of love for friends, family and even furbabies! After all, that’s why we’re all here isn’t it? I know it’s why I spend my days writing about your amazing big days and why I never tire of looking at the resulting photographs. To quote a hero of mine, RuPaul: “Everybody say love.” I hope you enjoy the oodles of inspiration this issue has to offer. We’ve got three gorgeous styled shoots packed with ideas from the region’s finest wedding suppliers, as well as three incredible real weddings. Plus, we introduce you to some of the county’s finest wedding photographers and find out what makes them tick, as well as showcasing some jaw-dropping big-day bakes by Sussex’s talented cake designers. So, dive in! Enjoy and keeeep planning!

NEWScounty POTS OF JOY Here at Your Sussex Wedding, we’ve been obsessed with the idea of giving succulents as wedding favours for a while now, so when we heard about The Little Botanical’s plans, we did a little jump for joy! This summer, the Sussexbased business is adding a special touch to its beautiful range of succulents with a new personalisation service. SUSSEX’S FINEST Fine-dining restaurant, The Pass at South Lodge has appointed a new chef to take the helm at the intimate 28-seat eatery.

There’s a choice of wedding spaces catering for any style or taste from the historical and traditional in the shape of Fontwell House, to the contemporary and stylish thanks to The Premier Suite, and romantic al fresco with the Paddock Marquee.

OFF TO THE RACES

Ben will be joining the team with his partner, Monika Zurawska, who will be leading the front house team. Both are thrilled to be joining The Pass and bringing something new to the Sussex community.

Fontwell Park Racecourse, just outside of Arundel, has announced that it will be honouring its 2022 prices for any weddings to take place at the venue in 2023. What’s more, a new wedding brochure has just been issued giving details about capacities and facilities, while boasting plenty of new imagery of this picturesque site including the historical Fontwell House, which was built during the roaring 20s. Set within 65 acres of beautiful countryside, Fontwell Park is a charming venue standing proudly in glorious grounds and offering a tranquil location in which to celebrate your big day.

Head chef Ben Wilkinson will join the hotel in August 2022 bringing with him a wealth of experience following his success at The Cottage in the Wood, a Michelin-starred restaurant with rooms in the Lake District.

Ben’s menu at The Pass will bring seasonal and local produce to diners’ plates, very much an ode to the county, highlights will include Sussex Downs venison with fennel, caper, smoke and rye; and wild sea trout with cucumber, oysters and roe. Desserts include Three Sheep’s cheese and strawberry ewe’s curd with vanilla and elderflowers. Thanks to The Pass’ design, guests will be able to enjoy a truly immersive chef’s table-style dining experience focused on seasonality, clever cooking and thoughtful tasting menus.

David Connell, general manager of South Lodge says, “The past two years have seen us working with some fabulous chefs for short-term residencies, however, we now feel the time is right to bring in a more permanent team to take the restaurant on to new levels. Having held a Michelin Star at The Cottage in the Wood in Keswick, along with it being listed at number 24 in the UK Top 100 Restaurants list in 2021, Ben demonstrates the quality of menu he can bring to South Lodge. The Lake District has fabulous local produce, but we know that Sussex has too, so we’re very excited by what he can bring to the table.”

LOCAL NEWS 9

Editorloves 10

We love nothing more than hearing all about your big days, but you’re not the only ones with a story to tell as sometimes we get to hear about things from the perspective of the venue. With the Cottesmore Hotel, Spa & Golf Club having suffered a fire a few years back, its team has seen its fair share of adversity. So, when partner Louisa Porter and Julie Foote from the weddings and events team told me some heart-warming tales (or should I say tails) from their recent weddings, I knew I had to Theshare...bride of a recent wedding at the venue was desperate to say her “I dos” al fresco. The weather had been looking very uncertain all morning, but despite this the team set up the ceremony on the lawn. Twenty minutes before it was due to start, the heavens opened. So, out into the elements the team rushed gathering flowers, lanterns and more, transferring it all into the Barn Room. Everything was beautifully in place indoors, with 60 guests comfortably seated when the sun came out! The bride text from her room that she wanted to go back outside, so the team dutifully leaped into action to reverse everything they’d just done, which included drying off all the chairs. The wedding was only 10 minutes late and with perfect weather for the vows. Julie remembers, “Many of the guests were Scottish and some were farmers, they’d all insisted that the weather would be fine for the ceremony. I should have listened to them!”

Couples are going beyond simply scenting a wedding with fragrance and are using aromatherapy to energise their wedding party, and the new Love & Surrender range is the perfect tool. Containing a powerful combination of pure rose oil and potentised rose quartz crystal it’s perfect to scent a wedding reception or ceremony. The candle in particular is designed to enhance the heart energy and the ability to receive unconditional love. Likewise, the Love & Surrender Chakra Aura Spray is beautiful when spritzed throughout your venue. Infused with rose quartz crystal and blended with rose oil and sweet orange oil, it smells divine and gives an instant lift.

Zephorium is a range of crystal infused aromatherapy skincare, bath and body, and fragrance collection, based on energy attraction and positive thinking, containing only the finest natural and organic ingredients. Best of all it’s all lovingly made locally.

TALES FROM A SUSSEX WEDDING VENUE

HEAVEN SCENT

We also adore the Love & Surrender Heart Shaped Pampering Candle Melts made from natural beeswax, pure aromatherapy and completely toxin free. If you’ve scented the rest of your wedding these will make lovely little favours for guests to take home and forever remember your day fondly whenever they smell the fragrance. Also, new to the collection is the Rose Quartz Gua Sha Facial Set. Gua Sha is trending all over social media at the moment, so if you’re working hard to get your skin wedding ready, there are many who would recommend the technique. Said to move energy and lift wrinkles, which in turn improves circulation and increases lymphatic drainage, it also reduces puffiness. Plus, rosehip is the oil for skin repair, helping to heal and smooth out damaged, scarred or irritated skin, it’s combined here with apricot and hemp oil to further promote repair. You can shop the collection at https://zephorium.com

www.thewardettestudio.com

It just goes to show though that the team at Cottesmore will go to any length to make sure their couples are happy. At another wedding, resident furry friend, cat Oscar, decided he’d make a guest appearance and walked across the aisle on the lawn during the couple’s vows, later joining them on the dancefloor. Louisa says, “He ends up in a lot of our reviews. I think he genuinely believes he’s human!”

The Sussex Suite is the venue’s largest, accommodating up to 300 loved ones. Elegantly decorated it has eight skylights and features a private bar and its very own banqueting kitchen. Should you choose to use outside caterers, they will have full access to it directly from the suite.

ROYAL PAVILION, BRIGHTON 03000 290 905 | https://brightonmuseums.org.uk/royalpavilion

This breathtaking former royal Regency palace offers a unique venue in the heart of Brighton and Hove’s cultural quarter. Today it can be enjoyed in its original 1823 splendour, with Indian architecture contrasting with exotic interiors inspired by China. One of the most exotically beautiful buildings in Britain it was designed to entice, enrapture and enchant the great, good and grand of George IV’s court.

The Red Drawing Room can host up to 44 for the ceremony. Retaining much of George IV’s 1820s decorative scheme including dragon wallpaper and palm tree pillars, it’s located on the ground floor and not open to the general public. The Music Room, available for evening hire only, can host 90 for the “I dos” and is one of the most spectacular rooms in the palace.

At the heart of the Yoghurt Rooms is a beautiful oak-framed barn clad in green oak featherboard with a roof of reclaimed red clay tiles. Designed by the farmer, it was built by his son ready for his own wedding. This huge structure houses a stage, unstocked bar area and a grand central fireplace. It also has rustic tables and benches included in the cost of hire.

Ceremonies take place in the Wedding Garden with space for 100 loved ones. As you step into this walled garden, the aisle leads you into what feels like a secret space, where you’re surrounded by shrubs and flower beds, luscious green lawns and a characterful wooden arbour.

The Barn offers space for 80 seated and 100 standing guests to witness you say your vows. It’s a versatile space and the perfect solution if the weather is less favourable. It can also play host to your celebrations with 80 seated and 150 standing with the additional enclosed garden. It’s equipped with tables, chairs, a kitchenette and its own toilet facilities.

The barn sits at the centre of an organic farm and is surrounded by the rolling Sussex countryside including Ashdown Forest, and is close to the historical town of East Grinstead. The farm also boasts a lovely large duckpond along with stunning views of nearby Weir Wood Reservoir.

A 40-metre long pergola adorned in wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines leads you through to the Arena for your wedding breakfast and evening reception, where you can be joined by 150-200 loved ones. Here, you’ll find the venue’s large marquee, fully-lined with ivory drapes and lit by chandeliers and hundreds of fairylights. The area around it measures more than 1,000 square metres, so there’s ample room for even more entertainment like giant garden games and a mobile bar or caterer. When it comes to dining, you can book a spit roast from The Walled Garden Café, an American-themed meal from Smith and Western restaurant or an all-vegan menu from the new Lakeside Café. That being said, you’re still welcome to bring your own caterer in if you prefer.

The licensed barn has a capacity of 150 for the ceremony. Plus, there’s a new bandstand standing in the main field (also constructed by the farmer’s very talented son). It has power for a PA and is available for your al fresco Receptionsvows.can be hosted on the farm, in the event field, inside the marquee, in the main barn and even in the after-hours Rave Room for the real party animals. The venue can accommodate 150 for your wedding breakfast. You can welcome 42 of your nearest and dearest to stay with you on site across the studio and granary apartments or three original Mongolian yurts. The venue also has links with Prestige Bell Tents, who offer the opportunity for rentals over the wedding weekend alongside the other onsite accommodation, for a fab festival vibe. There are unlimited spots for camping and campervans.

What makes Tilgate Park special is its 200 acres of rural bliss that acts as a spectacular backdrop of natural décor and landscape for your big day. The changing seasons all have something to offer here, from vibrant azaleas in spring to gardens in full bloom in the summer. A natural bed of confetti from fallen autumn leaves and sparkling frost forming on the trees in the winter, all means you’re blessed with stunning scenery whatever the time of year. There’s even a golf course on site, while adrenaline seekers can enjoy tree-top adventures and forest segways provided by Go Ape. Autumnal bliss Charlotte and Ryan tied the knot on 30th October, 2021 and styled their day to complement the date Images courtesy of RB Photographic 26

Charlotte sings in the choir at their village church, St Margaret’s in Warnham, so this was the perfect venue for the ceremony. However, when it came to choosing a reception space, the couple were less sure. “We looked at different types of venues from old manor hotels and barns to modern spa hotels. But when we visited The Ravenswood, we instantly knew this was the one for us. Not only is it stunning with amazing grounds, it also offered exclusive-use, which included three huge reception rooms,” the bride explains. Join us now as we learn more about the big day from Charlotte...

REAL WEDDINGS 27

SETTING THE SCENE

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE...

With an autumnal vision for the reception venue styling Mulberry Events set about making their dream come true. “The end result on the day was better than I’d imagined,” Charlotte recalls. There were orange bows on the back of the chairs and gold-rimmed chargers with a candle in a bowl surrounded by a flower wreath on each table. The top table was adorned in a string of autumn leaves, while the windows were draped with matching orange bows and fairylights.Thetable plan was created using a mirror decorated in a string of faux orange roses. The table names were all of places that mean

Ryan proposed while the pair were on holiday together in Snowdonia. In the gardens of the glamping pod site where they were staying was a hill with a bench at the top overlooking the sea. Ryan arranged with the owners to have the area decorated with fairylights, and they also left a blanket and bottle of bubbly up there for them. Ryan took Charlotte to this beautiful spot and got down on one knee, with a ring he’d designed himself. “Just the two of us, overlooking the sea, surrounded by fairylights at sunset... it was a complete surprise and just the most perfect, romantic moment. I very tearfully said ‘yes,’” Charlotte remembers.

Charlotte and Ryan met at university and soon became inseparable. “Despite being very different people with many different interests, it just worked,” Charlotte says, “Being at uni could be stressful and Ryan was always there, being a calming influence, which I definitely needed as I was the opposite. He never failed to make me laugh and became, not only my boyfriend, but my best friend.” The couple decided to move in together during their last year of studying and have lived together ever since.

The church service was an incredibly personal time for the couple, with music playing a crucial role, not least because Charlotte is a classical soprano. She walked up the aisle to I Giorni by Ludovici Einaudi played on the piano, and the ceremony featured three hymns of their choice: Come Let Us Sing, That Human Life Might Richer Be and Father Hear The Prayer We Offer. During the signing of the register, the church choir sung I Give To You A New Commandment by Nardone and Perfect Love by Kimberley Hill/ arr. Stacey Nordmeyer, before the newlyweds exited to ABBA’s I Do played on the organ. “The church service was so special for me, standing in front of all my friends and family marrying my best friend will always stay with me,” Charlotte remembers. The only slight challenge the couple needed to tackle was the 35-45 minutes it would take to get to The Ravenswood from the church. But Brookland Wedding Cars overcame that in a heartbeat, supplying two cars. One was for the bride and her father, later for the newlyweds, and the other as a VW Campervan for the bridesmaids.

LOOKING THE PART

REAL WEDDINGS 29

Ryan was dressed in a grey striped suit as were his groomsmen, father-of-the-bride and the groom’s dad. They all had a dark orange pinstripe running through them, which matched the colour palette perfectly. Orange ties, purchased using Swagger and Swoon’s colour match service to mirror the exact hue of bridesmaids’ dresses, completed their ensembles. Ryan’s tie had a paisley print so that he stood out as man-of-themoment and the gents all wore pins that he’d bought for them. The bridesmaids wore burnt orange midi, drop-hem, cowl-neck dresses paired with gold heels or flats and a gold shawl to keep the chill off.

The beautiful bride wore Bellagio by Eddy K with a subtle glitter tulle. Charlotte explains, “I’d always wanted to feel like a princess on my wedding day, so only a princess dress would do.”She accessorised with a matching tulle glitter veil and a fauxfeather bolero to wear for the sparklers outside in the evening. She completed the look with a gold necklace Ryan bought for her, two pairs of earrings, one belonging to Ryan’s late grandma, and her mum’s gold bangle.

Charlotte says, “It was the best day ever. I was so nervous in the car on the way to the church, but as soon as I started walking up the aisle and saw Ryan waiting, I relaxed and enjoyed every minute. “I surprised Ryan during the speeches by singing him I’ve Been Waiting For You by ABBA with some personal word changes. As I was performing, my four-year-old nephew, our pageboy, went over to Ryan and tried to put his ear defenders over his ears!”

Charlotte’s bouquet was tied with an orange ribbon, while the bridesmaids’ were tied with gold. The bride tribe also wore flower crowns and the bride herself had loose flowers in her own hair.

There were further treats on offer in the shape of the wedding favours, which were heart-shaped Welsh cakes doubling up as place names. Charlotte’s dad is Welsh, so they were a nod to herTheheritage.big-day bake was formed of three tiers of traditional fruit, chocolate, and coffee. It was decorated in ivory fondant icing with sugar roses and leaves, and topped with a Mr & Mrs Archer topper. “The cake looked amazing, and tasted amazing,” Charlotte remembers.

A cellist played beautifully throughout the drinks reception as guests arrived from the church. “We had lots of lovely comments about her playing,” Charlotte says. The Ravenswood supplied the evening DJ, who sent the couple a form to complete to make sure they played the right music.

“The food at The Ravenswood was sooo good!” Charlotte tells us. From the drinks reception where they served canapés with a choice of Peroni, prosecco or elderflower; to the wedding breakfast, where the team were adept at catering for various dietary requirements; and on to the evening food – there were delicious delicacies to delight the whole way.

A WALK REAL WEDDINGS 33

The couple were all set to get married quite simply in a register office. But one day, when searching for woodland wedding venues, they stumbled upon Two Woods Estate. Rachel explains, “We looked it up online and on Instagram and immediately knew it was the perfect place for us. It’d been our dream to get married somewhere outdoors and the second we saw the beautiful redwood trees that line the ceremony area we looked at each other and knew we just had to get married there. Rob and Woody who own the venue are both such kind and helpful guys, so it made the whole process a pleasure.”Thedate was set for a magical springtime wedding on 7th April, 2022. Read on as the happy couple tell us more about the day itself...

in the woods

Rachel and Edward married amongst the trees at Two Woods Estate fulfilling their dream of an outdoor wedding

The pair quickly realised that they had a great deal in common, both sharing a passion for sport and the great outdoors, and began going for drinks after school. “Then, one thing led to another at the work Christmas party, as they do!” Rachel says. Ed proposed during a long walk on the South Downs, accompanied by the family’s black labrador, Pepper. He produced a tennis ball and instead of throwing it for Pepper, handed it to Rachel. Inside it was a handwritten poem and as she read it, he got down on one knee to offer her the ring. Rachel remembers, “It was such a surprise and a wonderful moment being in such a beautiful place with our best friend, Pepper there too. We then went on to a nearby beach to celebrate with champagne and moved into our new home the very next day – such a whirlwind!”

Images courtesy of Lauren Beth Photography

Rachel and Ed met in 2013 when they started teaching at the same school. Ed remembers, “Rachel introduced herself as a new member of staff, with a lovely smile, and from that moment I was hooked!”

I had no idea what I was looking for in a wedding dress, but after spontaneously going into a bridal boutique with my sister I found the one – the first one I tried on! It had an off-white, oyster hue to it, which suited the woodland venue.

“Seeing my beautiful bride walking down the aisle to my favourite song was an incredible moment. I couldn’t hold back the tears!” – Ed

34

Walking down the beautiful tree-lined redwood aisle with my dad towards Ed was a real highlight, I wish I could do that all again. The venue made our day extra special. The setting was just perfect and really made it such a stand-out day for us and our guests. Rob and Woody who run the estate went above and beyond to make us all feel comfortable and see we had a brilliant time.

I also chose a long white veil, which I didn’t think I’d want, but it set the dress off perfectly. I wore flat white sandals too, as I didn’t want to be tripping over any branches!

Duncan Howlett, a fantastic acoustic guitarist, played for guests before the ceremony, including Champagne Supernova as I walked up the aisle. He also entertained us all during the woodland reception. It was lovely to see everyone dancing and tapping along as they sipped champagne.

Ed wore a three-piece, dark blue suit with a pale golden check. This was an easy process once he’d decided on blue. His brother, Ben, wore the same, but with a slightly different buttonhole allowing Ed to stand out as the groom.

We decided on green for the bridesmaids’ satin, strappy dresses, to complement the casual woodland vibe we were going for. Each bridesmaid accessorised slightly differently with a waist tie and jewellery. In the woods we enjoyed beautifully presented grazing platters, which suited our relaxed woodland venue and tasted delicious. In the evening, we had Thai food, which was also delicious. All of our food options had to be completely gluten free (as Ed is coeliac), with some dairy-free and vegan options. Our food suppliers went above and beyond to make sure these dietary needs were met.

35 REAL WEDDINGS

We went to explore the meadow with our photographer and videographer. It was a sunny, but windy day and my veil blew straight off, high into the sky. We thought we’d never see it again, but my dashing new husband ran after it and luckily it dropped to the ground just in time. Lauren caught the moment on camera, so we’ll always look back on it and laugh. We opted for an intimate wedding, so we all sat together on one long table – one big happy family. We chose wildflower seeds as favours to suit our woodland theme, as well as personalised notepads and pencils for guests to use during our reception games. We also supplied some happy tears tissues!

Belle of the ball

Emma met Ben at a ball in Bristol. The pair found themselves instantly attracted to one another and when Ben swept Emma off her feet with a fun salsa on the dancefloor, she knew her life was about to change forever.

Ben proposed on Wimbledon Common, while they were out walking the dog one day.

Although a total surprise, Emma did suspect something might be afoot when Ben started shaking and acting strangely! It was love at first sight when the couple visited Southend Barns. “It’s beautiful, relaxed and fun, which matched what we wanted from our wedding day,” Emma explains. So, the date was set for 18th August, 2021. Here, the bride tells us all about the big day…

39 REAL WEDDINGS

Emma and Ben styled their big day using a pretty palette of pink and blue Images courtesy of Adorlee

Two of our best friends, Emily and Matt, played Can’t Help Falling In Love on the violin and keyboard as I walked down the aisle.

We wanted relaxed pastel wedding floral arrangements focusing on the pink and blue theme, and I fell in love with the idea of the asymmetric moon gate, which we used in both the ceremony room and threshing barn.

I wore Hosta by Pronovias, a high-neck, backless, figure-hugging gown with leaf embroidery and a long train. I paired this with a cathedral-length embroidered veil, also by Pronovias.

Our two gorgeous sausage dogs came down the aisle to deliver the rings, wearing grey bow ties to match Ben’s suit. And one of Ben’s ushers, Ollie, did a fantastic performance to Kiss From A Rose showering flower petals over the guests and Ben prior to my entrance.

The tables were named after our favourite and most alongsidebeautifulwererestaurants.memorableTheyhand-paintedinwatercolourthecalligraphy.

REAL WEDDINGS 41

A jazz trio played amazing music while the guests enjoyed their Pimms and canapés.

Ben wore a three-piece, slim-fit, woollen suit in light grey. He teamed it with a blue waistcoat and pale pink tie. His silver cufflinks had been given to him as a Christening present by his late grandma. The groomsmen wore the same suits, but in navy.

We loved the mixture of high and low centrepieces on gold stands enabling guests to have conversations through them unimpeded.

The bridesmaids wore pale blue dresses in the same material and hue, but varying styles. Ben is a pilot so we made origami paper planes as wedding favours, roping in some family members to help. We also gave guests handmade bath oils to take home.

For the evening, I changed into Jesus Piero high-waisted white palazzo pants with a white bandeau and flowerembroidered lace top. The Flyaways played and acoustic an electric set until the end of the night, which even had a few of the older guests getting involved in a mosh pit at one stage!

Our wedding cake was decorated with a stencil pattern based on the leaf detailing on my dress. We cut it using Ben’s Naval ceremonial sword – it nearly toppled over but luckily we managed to save it!

We’d practised a rhumba to Can’t Help Falling In Love by Haley Reinhart. All of our suppliers were amazing, especially considering the twicedelayed date. Special shoutouts have to go to The Flyaways and Nicci at Adorlee though!

“Having dyslexia, pictures have always made more sense to me than words,” photographer Andy Dorrington tells us. He always enjoyed photographing bike racing as a young adult and then in 2010, with their first child on the way, Andy and wife Jenny bought their first DSLR camera, which was the game changer. In 2011, with the support of their nearest and dearest, the couple started their business, Dorrington Photography to fit around family life. From that moment on, they’ve gone from strength to strength, now building their professional network with fantastic second photographers, Lizzie and Colin. How would you describe your photographic style? “We believe our style would officially be considered reportage, but to our couples we feel ‘relaxed’ is a much better word. We’re led by them, which is why our pre-wedding meeting is so important, allowing us to get to know them better and what it is they’re looking for when it comes to their wedding photographs. We’ll always aim to get some beautiful portraiture and, of course, the traditional group shots. However, we really enjoy bringing a more candid feel to the rest of the day. For us, it’s about creating a diary to look back on and enjoy in years to come.”

Ben has always loved cameras and capturing images, so studying film and media at A Level seemed a natural choice for him. He later found himself involved in his university’s Photographic Society, and because most of his peers were physicists, he decided to study photography as a science as well as an art. After years of capturing weddings for friends, he struck out on his own to turn it into a full-time business. How would you describe your photographic style?

Allow us to introduce you to some of Sussex’s finest wedding photographers

We’re a bit clueless about our wedding photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture?

“Every photographer takes a different approach to weddings as each day should be considered special and unique. While a list of shots can help you to get an idea of the common things that a photographer might capture, this won’t include all the little details that are specific to your wedding. My suggestion is to provide a list of all your little touches, and let the professional take care of the rest.”

“It’s a personal choice and very much depends on the image. I believe that certain shots lend themselves to black and white based on their composition or atmosphere, meaning they can be enhanced by using this technique. Our couples can always tell us if they’d like a particular colour image turned black and white after they’ve received their final set.”

“Very relaxed and candid. The only time I arrange a photo is during the formal group shots and couple portraits, and even then I’m very chilled! I like people’s authentic self to show through in my images, something that’s hard to achieve if every shot has been tampered with by moving subjects into weird and wonderful poses.”

BEN PORTER PHOTOGRAPHY

Lauren has always been passionate about capturing photos, especially as a child when she would go on day trips with her “Gramps.” He’d show her the camera basics and they’d set off to photograph flowers, nature, landscapes and more on their walks together. As a teenager she studied photography at A Level, where she discovered a passion for developing her own photos in the darkroom and watching the images suddenly appear. After college she went into a couple of photography jobs, one for a newspaper and one for a high street store, but she was never able to be as creative as she wanted to be. It wasn’t until she was asked to shoot her auntie’s wedding that she found that outlet. From there her love for wedding photography grew as she captured more big days. So, she invested in workshops and gained experience as a second shooter and built up her business. How would you describe your photography style?

“Most of my couples feel like this before their wedding day, it’s completely normal. Try to focus on just the two of you, be in the moment together and most importantly, just be yourselves. Personally, I like to start with a little walk and chat together for your couple portraits to ease any nerves and relax you into the photos together with gentle guidance and prompts throughout.”

Although Fiona studied art and languages at college, she’s had a camera in her hand from early childhood. “I’ve always been the one to capture all the incriminating evidence at parties, events and social gatherings,” she says. When discussing study opportunities at the time, photography wasn’t an option given to her, but over the years she continued to develop her craft and present her art through photography. So much so that keeping up with commissions started to interfere with her day job! In 2008, she decided to bite the bullet and become a self-employed photographer, continuing to grow and develop her skills through prestigious photography associations. How would you describe your photographic style?

“Creative, contemporary and classic. I like to use the environment to create portraiture and images that stand out, while building a relationship with my clients allowing me to draw out the essence of who they are in the photographs. On the flip side, I can also be found hiding in the bushes to ensure I don’t miss out on the candid action and unposed moments too!”

“The most important thing I always say to potential clients is that you have to feel comfortable with the person you’re choosing to capture you on the most intimate, vulnerable and emotional day of your life. As photographers, we’re often helping with those pesky dresses that won’t do up, fixing buttonholes, and shielding you from stressors and difficulties on the day. We should be like the friend you didn’t know you had – someone you feel safe with, who’s got your back, and who you know will return with incredible photographic memories. If your gut tells you that you don’t gel with that supplier, then they’re not the one for you.”

“Natural, attentive and relaxed – photographing the big day as it unfolds, capturing all the little details and moments that make the day so personal. My editing style is also natural with warm, soft tones throughout.”

We’re both a bit camera shy and are feeling anxious about photos on our wedding day. Can you offer some advice?

PHOTOGRAPHY 57 N DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY

“I’m a natural, relaxed, informal photographer producing a light and bright style. I work with the couple and around their day, not intruding but capturing the events as they unfold. I prefer the candid moments rather than the formal staged images. Every couple, including their guests, compliment my friendly approach and ability to blend into the party.” A friend of ours had two photographers on their wedding day. What are the benefits of this?

“When you look back at your wedding photographs with your children and grandchildren, I want the pictures to remind you not just of what the day looked like, but also how it felt to share such a special time with everyone you love.”

An interest in photography was piqued for Nick Davies when he studied the subject at school using 35mm film. Despite opting for a different career path, this interest was reignited in 2013 when he began using digital cameras and exploring the potential of a more modern format. By 2016, the interest had become a passion, which took a turn when his best friend asked him to be best man and photographer at his wedding.

Philip began shooting photographs at the age of seven when his parents bought him his first camera, but it wasn’t until around a decade later that he started to take it seriously studying the subject at college before continuing at the University of Brighton. After graduating in 2009, he knew he wanted to start his own wedding photography business, and hasn’t looked back since.

PHILIP BEDFORD WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

“It’s also important to get some perspective on different pricing scales, depending on your budget. Look at the work of a photographer who charges a few hundred pounds next to the work of one who charges a few thousand pounds. You’ll see a vast difference in the quality of the work and those with more experience will charge more.

“I use a fun and creative approach to help you feel comfortable while being photographed. I work in a subtle and discreet way, shooting candid wedding photography and capturing events as they happen throughout the day. Your wedding is unique to you and although reportage photography should be part of the day it shouldn’t interfere with the rest of your plans. So, we’ll work together to get beautiful pictures of you both, capturing all the details as well as getting the family together for a few formal, or informal, group shots.

There are so many photographers out there, how do we choose the right one for us?

“Although this isn’t something I offer as part of my standard package, I do work with second photographers on request. This is beneficial to you as they can capture different angles of certain parts or moments throughout the day such as guest reactions during the ceremony or speeches, while I focus solely on you. A second shooter can also be useful during bridal or groom prep and guest arrivals.”

“Finally, always ask to view a full wedding gallery so you can see the complete range of photographs they shoot, not just the ones on the front page of their website or Instagram.”

“I’d recommend having a look at reviews and testimonials on a photographer’s website, to see some kind words that other brides and grooms have said about their work. You could also check out Google and Facebook reviews.

“It was quite a challenge to start a new career combining both on-thejob experience and photography courses, but it’s escalated into something I could only ever have imagined,” he says. How would you describe your photographic style?

WILDFLOWERS

LOCAL SHOOT 59

After two difficult years of lockdown, I wanted to show how weddings have come back with a big, colourful bang,” shoot coordinator Julie Madge of Madgicks tells us. As for many of us, when Julie thinks of spring and summer, the glorious hues of flowers in bloom spring to mind and this wildflower mix is really finding a home in modern wedding colour palettes. “Such a bright and colourful theme exudes happiness and joy,” Julie says. The colourful chairs from Luna and the Lane set the scene for this exuberant shoot, and everything else was designed to complement them. The blooms, of course, were designed to suit the wildflower theme and even the super-cute furry model was sporting a floral colour.

Domestic flower varieties are influencing wedding palettes more than ever and this shoot illustrates how to use these colours to great effect Images courtesy of Tom Langford GROWWhere the

CAKES 63  EXPECTATIONS

The wedding cake: sweet treat, reception dessert or showstopping centrepiece? Who’s to say it can’t be all three? Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, the big-day bake has been an enduring tradition and wedding stalwart since couples first said “I do.” Its origins are thought to date back to Ancient Rome when a cake of wheat or barley was broken over the bride’s head to signify good fortune. Thankfully, you won’t be forced to wear the delicacy today, so it’s something that’s well worth thinking about. The modern cake maker is now more versatile than ever and can whip you up a sweet showstopper big enough to take the place of your wedding breakfast dessert, or be served at your evening reception. Handing out the slices is also a lovely way of making sure you get round to see all of your guests. Alternatively, there’s the option to have a spectacular tower made up of cupcakes or macarons, even doughnuts if you prefer. And don’t forget, a cheese stack is a great choice if you fancy something savoury. What we love best about the modern wedding cake is its capacity to act as a work of art and form a key focal point in your venue styling. Displayed on its own table, adorned in your wedding flowers, set against a neon sign or flower wall backdrop it’ll be a feature to remember, helping to bring your theme together. Super-talented bakers can even decorate these centrepieces to illustrate your own unique love story. So, it’s with their showstopping styling quality in mind that we bring to you a showcase of breathtaking bakes with the help of local talented cake makers.

If you have an engagement ring, think about how it will look alongside a wedding ring. The more features the two share, the more they’ll complement one another. Matching the materials, as well as the profiles is a good place to start. If your engagement ring doesn’t have straight sides, a fitted wedding band will allow the two to sit comfortably together, minimising wear caused by them rubbing against one another.

Dimensions too are key to achieving a unified look. A tenth of a millimetre, more or less, in width or depth, can make all the difference.

On the practical side, before you make your final purchase, consider whether it’s suitable for the treatment it’ll get. Someone with a manual job or with an active lifestyle needs a ring that is robust and hardwearing. Go for a tough material and perhaps also choose a surface like a hammered finish that will help to disguise any knocks and dents you put into it.

Remember though, it’s quite possible that your ideal ring doesn’t exist, so if you opt for a bespoke ring, you’ll be able to get involved in the design process and your ring can be made just how you want it.

Canon in D, Clair de Lune, or Trumpet Voluntary all work well. The signing of the register needs at least two pieces. Flower Duet and Le Onde are lovely and are certainly long enough. Then, the exit piece. It’s imperative that this is upbeat, as people will be clapping and there will be lots of noise, so a fast tempo is a must. Consider Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Trumpet Tune or First Arabesque by Debussy for this. Personally, I always suggest an online meeting before the big day to go through options, then we can take it from there, as there are always plenty more suggestions waiting to be heard!

Remember, many film scores use classical music too, so this is a fantastic genre crossover to pick from.

EXPERT ADVICE 67

SHARING IS CARING

The bras in my underwear draw are all different sizes, I never feel like I get it right, so I’d like to be fitted for my bridal underwear. I’m nervous about the process though, can you tell me what it involves? I hear this all the time! And you simply must invest in new bras that will support you, and most importantly, fit you correctly. Everyone who’s come to my personal bra fitting studio and been in the wrong size has said they feel different when they leave – more positive, confident and comfortable. Some had even been in pain due to wearing the wrong size before. You want to look and feel the very best you can for your wedding and honeymoon too. It all starts with wearing the right underwear and this is what I’m passionate about. HERE COMES THE BRIDE

I’d love a harpist to play me down the aisle, but I don’t know much about classical music. What music would you recommend I pick? Any professional musician will suggest pieces that are suitable for your ceremony. For example, you need something sedate for the entrance, nothing that’s going to make you or your bridal party walk in too fast.

A three-course seated wedding breakfast isn’t really us. Can you suggest any alternatives?

We do offer the traditional wedding breakfasts, but out of choice I prefer big bold sharing platters that take centre stage on the tables. For these, I love to use home-grown herbs and edible flowers from my own cottage garden as well as locally-grown produce and meat direct from the farmer. As you can imagine, as a farmer’s daughter I have many contacts in theAfield!less formal wedding breakfast featuring sharing platters is a much more naturally relaxed style of dining. They allow your guests to be interactive, sociable and offer plenty of choice to suit all tastes. Stunning rustic platters offer the wow factor and are sure to be a conversation starter too when they arrive at the tables, something that a three-course meal being served one plate at a time doesn’t have the ability to do. By the very act of sharing family-style you’re bringing people together across the table, unifying loved ones from both sides. After all, sharing is caring!

My bridesmaids have a dilemma! Some are wearing their hair up, some down, but they still want to tie their looks together through their hair accessories. What can you Juliesuggest?says:Each bridesmaid has her own individual style and different hair dos will suit them better depending on their hair type. Of course, you still want them all to complement each other and your wedding theme. A beautiful way to do this is with the addition of hair accessories, in particular, floral hair pins. Hair pins are so versatile and can suit any look. For example, if one of your bridesmaids has opted for a low bun, then two hair pins on the side will look lovely and if another is having a half up/half down style then you can add a few at the top. Choosing floral hair pins also means you can pick a colour that matches your palette and bride tribe’s dresses.

I love working with brides to create custom hair pins according to their theme. Many love having a hair comb to complete their own look and then coordinating it with pins for the bridesmaids, so the whole party matches. Floral hair accessories also complement the bridal bouquet and add a beautiful splash of colour to any style.

DRY SPELL

I’m really struggling with patches of very dry skin on my face and nothing I’ve tried helps. I’m panicking that this will ruin my big-day make-up. Can you Beckyhelp?says: I’d definitely recommend fitting in some facials before the wedding. Start these around six months before so your skin gets used to the products and they have time to make an impact. Speak with the facialist about your concern as they can examine your skin and are best placed to recommend products you should be using at home. Make sure you’re cleansing and moisturising twice a day to keep your skin healthy. Use a rich moisturiser or overnight mask in the evenings for a boost of hydration. Also incorporate a chemical exfoliator into your skincare routine to remove the dead skin. Before moisturising, you can also layer hydrating products such as hyaluronic acid for an extra layer of hydration. Drink plenty of water and keep your skin make-up free if you can so nothing is drying it out and your skincare can really benefit it. EXPERTS

Becky Flynn, www.makeupbybeckyflynn.com J. Smith, Madge,

Alison says: I like all aspects of a wedding to flow together, so my favourite look for summer will depend on the style of dress, venue and the general theme of the wedding. Garden weddings can often be less formal, so flowing hair and boho looks work well. Half-up hair, waved with soft twists or braids is the perfect look for this time of year. A textured bun with a few tendrils to frame the face is another relaxed vibe I love. If your dress needs a more elegant and structured style to show it off in its full glory, you can consider having a second less formal look for the evening by letting your hair down. For make-up, I always like to enhance the natural beauty of my brides and for a summer wedding, this is key. I love a freshfaced make-up look with dewy skin. No caked-on foundation or uneven self tan! Many of my brides choose airbrush-applied foundation. It looks and feels like skin and has great durability. I like lighter colours on the eyes, some liner for definition and a few individual false lashes. A pop of colour on the cheeks and lips will complete a beautiful summer bridal make-up.

SUMMERTIME LOVE What’s your favourite bridal look for a summer wedding?

“Hypoallergenic, ph balanced, paraben-free, gluten-free, mercury-free and formulated with eco-cert approved ingredients – what’s the catch? There doesn’t seem to be one! I was a touch sceptical at first, but I’m actually rather impressed with it. The formula is silky when wet and completely matte when dry. Although I didn’t put it to the test of crying and have no skin allergies, I can confirm that it’s smudge-proof, builds well without getting claggy and was very kind on my eyes.”

“I’ve never tried loose pigment eyeshadows before and was sceptical when these first arrived in the office, but after just one application, I was hooked! These highly-concentrated products are easy to apply and are vegan and cruelty-free – a huge bonus. I love how you can create a soft and subtle look or build up the product for more glam.”

“In the spirit of full disclosure, I did not get this No Makeup concept initially. But having tried it, I’m more than a convert, I’m an addict! The light-reflecting pigments provide a soft, satin finish while the serum texture formulated with acyl-glutathione means it glides on and blends like a dream. It didn’t crease and my eyes looked brighter. It also acts as a great base for a bolder eyeshadow look, but works just as well on its own for subtle everyday wear.”

It’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...

As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess.Whenit comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all!

Melissa x

As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect.

From Miss to Mrs

FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

FACING FACTS

PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.

GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my somewhat.expectationsIfoundthatIfeltquiteguiltyaboutnotinvitingeveryoneI’veeverspokento,butyoudefinitelydoneedtodrawthelinesomewhere.Myadvicetoanyoneplanninga

wedding is don’t lose any sleep over not inviting someone, chances are they probably weren’t going to invite you to their wedding anyway!

CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.

THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea!

Thank you for reading and good luck!

Hello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...

Hindsight is a marvellous thing

Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT

If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES

Travel goals

An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some… 92

There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…

ART AND CULTURE

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

Caribbean vibes

As the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand 94

THE LANDINGS RESORT

ACCOMMODATION

The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.

If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

FIVE STAR LUXURY

EXCURSIONS

THE LANDINGS SPA

You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).

If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. Go on, treat yourself!

Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.
