Tilgate Park Weddings A VENUE LIKE NO OTHER

MAZE • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS

Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN

Be amongst be the first to this married in ing award-winn e u n ve

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines all adorned with thousands of fairy lights. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats.

EVENTS ARENA

The perfect location to host a large marquee for your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Measuring more than 1,000 square metres, there’s ample room for extra entertainment like a band or giant garden games and it is conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around every twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

elcome one and all to another issue of Your Sussex Wedding. Here we are, gradually approaching my favourite part of the year where it feels like there’s so much to look forward to (will you be cross if I say I’m excited about Christmas already?). I adore the autumn as colours change and the air starts to cool. Mind you, based on the weather as I write this, the temperatures won’t have far to fall this year! What a great time to get married though. September tends to be far more predictable climate-wise than August and there’s a wonderfully romantic feel of promise just as the seasons begin to change. I love to see what couples and their suppliers come up with in terms of wedding colour palettes at this time of year. Dusky pink paired with rich burgundy is a real treat when embellished with a metallic touch of gold as per our gorgeous styled shoot from page 45. I’m loving being involved with wedding plans myself as Melissa, my dear friend and editor here at CWM, makes plans to tie the knot next July, with yours truly as bridesmaid – as I may have mentioned once or twice... She’s already chosen her gown, in which she looks stunning. But what we learned from this experience is not to panic if you don’t instantly burst in to tears at the knowledge that it’s the one. If that’s just not you, you’re unlikely to change your entire personally the moment you try on a wedding dress. Sometimes, the knowledge that you’ve chosen your dream attire comes from careful deliberation and a process of trying on all silhouettes to know what suits and what doesn’t. Melissa actually chose a dress that’s the complete opposite to what she thought she’d go for and this is something we as editors hear all the time. Remember: you do you and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I hope you enjoy this splendid issue and keeep planning!

YOUR ESSENTIALS

When the country, and most of the wedding industry with it, ground to a halt during Covid lockdowns Weaver Family Limousines found itself with little to no business with their poor couples forced to postpone their weddings. Owner David says, “A wedding day is a huge event in anyone’s life and it should be special, complete with all the planning and anticipation. Instead couples’ dreams were dashed with uncertainty replacing that excitement.” But, the team set to work doing everything they could to support their brides and grooms – moving dates at a moment’s notice, honouring bookings at no extra cost and generally trying hard to give their nearlyweds much needed hope and encouragement. “Where we could make a wedding happen, we did. Where we could rearrange, we did,” David says. In the face of adversity this determined wedding supplier decided to take a significant risk and increase its fleet, enabling it to offer a wider variety of services to help couples focus on new plans. The latest exciting additions

to the fleet are a beautiful white Rolls Royce Silver Spur, a stunning silver Bentley and another silver Mercedes S350 Executive. The former has a special history having been built to special order by Rolls Royce for a princess. It’s one foot longer than standard and is finished in diamond white with an elegant white leather interior. What’s more, Weaver Family Limousines is still offering fixed prices and bookings will be honoured even if your date needs to be moved. Check out www.weaverfamilylimousines.co.uk

Brighton-based hat designer and milliner Rachael Clunie of Avant Garde Couture and Rachael Clunie Millinery, has been awarded a scholarship from The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, a charity supporting excellence in British craftsmanship. This prestigious award will fund her further training, enabling her to learn specific skills from master milliners Dillon Wallwork and Maor Zabar. Rachael’s work features both contemporary couture hats as well as more off-the-wall designs, including her spring/summer 2019 collection made from locally-sourced seaweed and beach litter. Previous works have seen her use recycled plastic from regular household products and lights. She says, “I’m overwhelmed and honoured to have been seen as talented enough to be accepted and supported by this wonderful trust. I’ve been totally shocked as I made it through each stage and to find out this wonderful news is just mind-blowing. I can’t wait to start this new journey as one of its new scholars and QEST family member.” So, if your mums are looking for something super-special to crown their wedding-day look head over to www.avantgardecoutureuk.com to find out more.

WINNING WAYS

BORN TO SHINE

Richard Talman and Hugo Johnson are the incredibly talented gentlemen behind Haywards Heath-based bespoke jewellers RTFJ. Both regulars on your TV screens (Richard on The Repair Shop and Hugo, 2021’s All That Glitters champ), the pair have super-high standards when it comes to their work and customer services. Your Sussex Wedding editor Kelly Andrews caught up with them for a virtual chat about their experiences working on such well-loved BBC shows. Thinking of your time on The Repair Shop Richard, what’s the most challenging repair you’ve ever had to do? It would have to be the sapphire and diamond engagement ring that was run over on a driveway, followed by the very first one I did back in 2017 on series three. Whenever you’re dealing with such precious heirlooms, coupled with the fact that you’re out of the workshop you’re used to – that made it really challenging. With the tiny margins for error you’re dealing with and the cameras on you, the pressure must be immense - you must love what you do! What do you love about repairing vs. creating? In a way, my love of repairing has overtaken my love of creating. I’m a bit of a sentimentalist – I struggle selling a car because I get too attached! But further to that I abhor waste – anything from food to jewellery. You can’t throw anything away as far as I’m concerned, as long as there’s a use for it. Someone might come in to the workshop with their late husband’s ring having been told by another jeweller that it’s beyond repair and that they should just replace it – that’s the sort of thing I love doing. I always think it’s a bit like taking your 12-year-old dog to the vet and being advised to just get a new one! My passion is keeping people’s memories alive. Hugo, huge congratulations on winning All That Glitters, we were cheering for you all the way! What was your favourite piece that you made? I would say the sweetheart brooch in episode two. I combined a penguin with a treble clef for the bespoke challenge where I was able to apply the skills I’d learnt throughout my training for the first time on the show. Also, we’d done some casting, which was either going to go one way or the other, it was a real gamble, but it all paid off and went very smoothly. So, that on top of some classic diamond mounting made that my favourite piece. What meant the most to you on the show – having the client choose your bespoke piece or the judges awarding you jeweller of the week? Personally, the highlights were when the bespoke clients chose my pieces. When it comes to judging another maker it’s natural to lean very much towards your own personal style, which biases you. Having a bespoke brief, where you make something especially for someone; putting your time, effort, creativity and design into it then having it chosen by that person from a selection, that’s a really special moment. Click play for the duo’s advice on selecting your all-important wedding rings and read the full interview at www.your-sussex.wedding/news-headlines where Richard and Hugo talk trends, bespoke jewellery and the future. Andrew Brownsword Hotels and the team at Amberley Castle are celebrating after learning that the hotel and restaurant has been named a Tripadvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice award winner. Positioning Amberley Castle in the top 10 per cent of all hotels worldwide, the accolade is the result of reviews and ratings from travellers across the globe. This local beauty spot boasts 1,796 reviews on the popular site, more than 87 per cent of which rate it as excellent or very good. Comments include: “The hotel is amazing, the staff could not be nicer,” and “I felt like royalty.” General manager Piers Vowles comments, “Awards are always lovely to receive of course, but those voted for by our customers are our favourite, so we’re particularly pleased with this one!” To find out more about hosting your big day at Amberley Castle, head over to www.amberleycastle.co.uk

FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN SUSSEX I think I’ve always been passionate about photography and my dream came true getting my first DSLR camera 7 years ago. It all started as a hobby, then it actually became my job! I’ve achieved a lot through the years, and, like everything in life, we never stop learning. My favourite shots are certainly the ones which show spontaneity and happiness.

ROYAL PAVILION, BRIGHTON

This breathtaking former royal Regency palace offers a one-of-a-kind wedding venue in the heart of Brighton and Hove’s cultural quarter. One of the most exotically beautiful buildings in Britain it was designed to entice, enrapture and enchant the great, good and grand of George IV’s court. The Royal Pavilion’s glorious garden is one of the few fully-restored Regency gardens in the country. Groups of flowers emulate jewels against the flourishing evergreens that frame striking views of the palace, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for images of your wedding day. Your ceremony can take place in the Red Drawing Room, which has a maximum capacity of 44. This beautiful room retains much of George IV’s striking 1820s decorative scheme, incorporating the Royal Pavilion’s distinctive dragon wallpaper and palm-tree pillars. Located on the ground floor it’s not open to the general public and benefits from its own private entrance leading directly from the Regency garden and offering the feel of true exclusivity on your special day. For evening “I dos” the dazzling Music Room, one of the palace’s most spectacular state rooms, is available. It has space for 90 loved ones who enter via the Pavilion’s grand entrance and are led to the Music Room via the exotic, Chinese-inspired Long Gallery. Its extraordinary interior is lit by nine lotus-shaped chandeliers, with walls decorated with rich red and gold canvases in the Chinoiserie style, supported by painted dragons. The gilded dome ceiling is made up of hundreds of plaster cockleshells creating the illusion of height. The Royal Pavilion can be hired for your reception even if you’re not holding your ceremony at the venue. The King William IV Room, situated on the first floor offers an elegant setting for day and evening. With handpainted Chinese-style wallpaper and hanging lanterns, it also benefits from a private entrance, its own lobby and a caterer’s kitchen. It can host 80 for a drinks reception, 70 for a standing buffet or 60 for a seated meal.

ALL SAINTS THE OLD CHAPEL

01323 643 181 | www.allsaintschapeleastbourne.org All Saints Chapel is a beautiful and rather well-hidden venue. Situated close to the sea in the picturesque ancient village of Meads, Eastbourne, this is a majestic English architectural masterpiece designed by Henry Woodyer in 1874. The All Saints Grade II listed Old Gothic chapel is deconsecrated and fully-licensed for civil partnerships, events and functions. It’s easily accessed via a leafy residential street through huge timber gates and the front grounds where guests are able to mingle preand post-ceremony. The venue boasts four parts. First, the entrance reception, which is a modern, light and airy addition. It’s furnished with antique desks and pews complete with bar area where your reception drinks are served. Next is Harriot’s Hallway, an ancient cloister named after the founding and selfless Sister Harriot Byron Brown. Now beautifully decorated with 26

strings of fairylights it’s used as the pre-nuptial area for the bride and her bridesmaids to relax, hidden from view, before their grand entrance. You then find yourself in the open area of the stairwell complete with wrought iron bannisters and gothic windows. You’re free to add your own personal touches anywhere you wish, but this is the perfect area to go to town! Finally, the pièce de resistance: The Great Hall. Here the Minton-tiled 60-foot aisle awaits the bridal party. The bejewelled light that floods in is ever changing, highlighting the Chapel’s various elements. Thirty metres of vaulted-timber ceiling tower above the altar, 150-year-old floor tiles lay beneath your feet and an elegant bar area stands beside hand-carved pew ends in the near corner of the banquet hall tempting guests to sample some of the 25 different gins on offer. Both ceremonies and celebrations take place in The Great Hall, which can accommodate 120 seated and 200 standing. While the team expertly turn the space around from one use to the other you and your loved ones can enjoy canapés and prosecco in the garden and reception area.

REAL WEDDINGS

T

he spark between Charlotte and Josh was clear from the moment they met and it was obvious to friends looking on that they were witnessing love at first sight. Five years on, and by that time a couple, they’d quit their jobs to go travelling for seven months. Charlotte was quizzed before she left about whether Josh might propose, but she was adamant he wouldn’t. Sri Lanka was the first stop on their travels and whilst there they made sure to visit a restaurant recommended by a friend. Charlotte tells us, “We’d just ordered cocktails when Josh asked me to come down to the sea with him, and it was there by the water’s edge that he got down on one knee and said: ‘before we left, I asked your dad a question...’ I immediately started crying, but when I was eventually able to speak, my answer was ‘yes.’” The best thing about Josh’s timing was that it meant the pair were able to spend the next few months in their own little newly-engaged bubble as they completed their travels. Charlotte says, “We celebrated with family and friends when we got home and it felt like we’d got engaged all over again!” In their perfect wedding venue, the pair were looking for somewhere intimate where they could host everything in one place, and fell in love with Southend Barns. So, the date was set for 17th April, 2020. But just one month beforehand, the unthinkable happened as the nation was plunged into the first Covid lockdown. “I’m pretty sure we could fill the entirety of Your Sussex Wedding with tales of our changed plans. By the time the actual day arrived, we were on something like plan 10,” Charlotte says. Over the course of the summer the guest list was downsized from 120 guests to 30, then to 15. Despite toying with the idea of postponing further, the couple were keen to start a family and as no one knew how long restrictions would continue, they decided to get married in October and make the most of it. Here, Charlotte tells us more about their wonderful wedding day...

“In the end, we wouldn’t have changed our day. It was intimate and special. I’m now a huge advocate of small weddings, ours helped us to see what’s most important.” SETTING THE SCENE By their own admission Charlotte and Josh went all out on their venue styling. And why not? The bride explains, “There were only 19 of us, so we wanted the barn to feel intimate. I was blown away when I saw it for the fist time. It was more beautiful than I’d imagined.” Keen to incorporate the memory of her late mum into the day Charlotte selected orange for the flowers, as well as the gentlemen’s accessories since this was her favourite colour. Given the move to an autumnal wedding date, this actually worked brilliantly as a seasonal palette. The centrepieces were garlands by The Floral Artisan and To Have and To Hire embellished the tables with some fab theme-fitting finishing touches. Charlotte adds, “Our florist went above and beyond our expectations. The fact that she pulled it all together within a matter of days, in the face of continued uncertainty over restrictions, was incredible.” The couple gifted their guests super-fun hangover kits as wedding favours. These included coffee sachets, tea bags, Kit 29

Kats and paracetamol. “We always wanted our wedding to be a proper party even though it didn’t quite end up being the big bash we planned,” Charlotte explains.

LOOKING THE PART Charlotte wore Marnie by Enzoani. “It was actually my second dress as I changed my mind about the first,” she shares. The bride fell in love with the extravagant back and train, even though it wasn’t a silhouette she’d ever pictured herself wearing. “I knew Josh would love me in this dress too,” she explains. Charlotte finished the look with simple accessories in the shape of ivory shoes, a pair of stud earrings and a bracelet containing a picture of her mum. Josh was dressed in a blue tweed three-piece suit. He wore a different waistcoat to his groomsmen and accessorised with brown brogues, a pocket square and the pocket watch his father-in-law gave him as a joint 30th birthday and wedding gift. Charlotte’s bridesmaids wore dove grey dresses in two different styles – one an off-the-shoulder silhouette and the other with straps and a cowl neck.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The newlyweds enjoyed their first dance together outside before sitting down to eat. “This was actually really lovely and made the day a bit different,” Charlotte remembers. All assembled were treated to a seven-course menu that the couple worked with the venue’s chefs to create, and each dish was paired with a different wine. “We can’t thank Roots Catering enough. Guests told us this wasn’t just the best food they’d eaten at a wedding, but the best full stop! Every part was perfection.” Deservingly, the chefs were invited out of the kitchen at the end of the meal to take their applause and a standing ovation. Following the wedding breakfast, everyone enjoyed his ‘n’ hers cocktails in honour of the bride and groom – espresso martini for Charlotte and an old fashioned for Josh. “As there were so few guests it gave us the opportunity to talk to them all, and there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere to the whole evening. Everyone commented on how special they felt being part of such an intimate day,” the bride says.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS After all the stress and tears of planning and replanning a sense of calm washed over the pair on the big day as they finally felt they could relax and enjoy it. “My bridesmaids were concerned about how calm I was and kept asking if I was OK. But I was just excited that it was all finally happening,” Charlotte laughs. Saying “I do” in the venue’s gorgeous Secret Garden meant no one had to wear face masks and thankfully the sun shone. The bride continues, “I’d always had a fear of becoming overcome with emotion and crying as I walked down the aisle, but I was so happy that I smiled the whole way. Writing our own vows was something we’d always wanted to do and being able to say those words to each other was incredibly special. “The overriding emotion for both of us was an enormous sense of relief – after everything that’d happened it was finally our big day and it was absolutely perfect.”

30

“I found it really hard to cope with all the uncertainty, but Josh was my rock throughout.”

REAL WEDDINGS “If your wedding journey doesn’t go to plan, just let all of that stress and worry go when you do reach the big day. You’ve made it! Take a moment to soak up the joy and love.”

my and Max’s blind date almost didn’t happen when arrangements were cancelled and rescheduled several times. But the determined mutual friend who set them up eventually managed to get them together on a double date with her and her boyfriend. Perseverance paid off as the two hit it off right away and discovered much in common. Max proposed to Amy in romantic Lake Garda as the couple sat on their hotel room’s balcony sipping champagne. She said “yes” as a light rain started to fall, and a rainbow formed stretching across the lake. Amy says, “I’d like to say it was a

surprise, but I did have an inkling thanks to my father who started acting strangely one day after receiving a call from Max. So, I made sure I got my nails done before our trip away!” Pelham House in Lewes hosted the couple’s big day. Amy tells us, “It had been refurbished very recently and we were impressed with its subtle elegance and the history, as well as the convenience of the location for friends and family.” Read on as bride Amy shares her account of, 14th December 2019, W-day...

REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a stunning silk Suzanne Neville gown with a boat neck, sleeves and a fitted waist that flowed into a full skirt complete with train. It was simple and classic, yet made a statement, which appealed to me. We both loved our wedding ceremony. It was such a special and emotional moment.

Max was dressed in a Hugo Boss suit, which was a darker shade of grey than his groomsmen’s, allowing him to stand out. Our centrepieces were antique glass bowls filled with beautiful deep red and blush roses with green foliage. These were surrounded by tea lights in glass holders.

33

The table plan and place names were designed in the same style – ivory backed onto navy card. Our cake was a semi-naked three-tier bake decorated with fresh flowers.

Our floral arrangements were fairly deconstructed in style and featured burgundy and blush blooms with plenty of foliage.

34

We covered the venue’s mantelpieces with large floral features, while foliage trailed up the staircase in the main entrance hall. We also had hurricane lamps with candles inside decorating the fireplaces.

REAL WEDDINGS

My bridesmaids wore emerald green, full-length silk slip dresses with cowl backs. Pelham House did our catering and served us canapés followed by a four-course meal and Turkish meze in the evening.

We really enjoyed going off with our photographer to have our photos taken and have a bit of time alone together. Our photographer Bill and wife Theresa were amazing and made us feel so comfortable throughout the day. It felt as though they were friends we’d known for years.

A DJ provided the evening’s entertainment. Everyone had a great time.

I planned everything early meaning there was less pressure as the big day drew closer, so that’s my top tip! I’d also say: it’s not worth obsessing over the small details, as people won’t remember them.

ick had intended to propose to Sophie at the top of Harting Hill, but as soon as he picked up the engagement ring from the jewellers, he found he couldn’t wait a moment longer and ended up popping the question in front of their open fire at home. It wasn’t long before the couple started to focus on the wedding venue hunt and compiled a wish list. A farmer’s daughter, Sophie, was looking for a picturesque countryside location and dreamed of a church ceremony, while Nick preferred the idea of hosting the whole day in one place. But once they stepped inside the Gridshell building at Weald and Downland Living Museum they were both blown away – they’d found the perfect compromise. “It had the grandeur and acoustics of a church, and was only a short walk from the reception marquee, meaning the day wouldn’t be broken up with a drive between venues,” Sophie explains. My dad is known for growing sweet peas and he grew them in abundance for the big day. Petra from Sussex Florals made sure to include them in all the main centrepieces as well as in the little jars that lined the middle of the banquet tables. She also created all of the main displays including the tractor, the ceremony table, the Land Rover and flower arch, as well as the bouquets.

Everyone helped themselves to a family-feast style banquet. It helped to break the ice between guests who didn’t know each other and created a sociable atmosphere. n urban chic vibe is something you might expect to see most often in an industrial warehouse setting, but this team of local wedding experts set out to blow that theory out of the water with this project. Featuring shades of burgundy and pink tones, they created a romantic atmosphere in the Two Woods Estate ceremony area, dramatically flanked by enormous redwoods. It beautifully showcases the love between its real couple and shows that you can have the best of both worlds. 45

as there ever been an occasion in our lifetime when we’ve needed to celebrate and show our gratitude for so much: friends, family, health, togetherness and joy? We all breathed a sigh of relief following the latest lockdown when we were told we could socialise again, even in limited numbers. So, to honour the age-old tradition of a hen do, this lovely team of local wedding professionals chose to host the ultimate glamping party. Elise of Beneath The Canopy says, “The last 18 months have been incredibly difficult for us and the wedding industry as a whole. So, setting up for these wonderful ladies was so much fun – full of colour and excitement. It served as a brilliant reminder of why we do what we do and the girls’ reactions gave us all the summer feels.” Here at Your Sussex Wedding, we can’t wait to see the months ahead bursting with weddings, so grab your bride tribe, take away the planning woes of 2020 and celebrate your impending nuptials with aplomb. You deserve it! 48

Whether you have 150 guests or 15, the rollercoaster of wedding day emotions is still there, from pre-ceremony nerves right through to dancefloor elation. It’s these special moments that make your wedding-day memories so special and your photographer will be there to beautifully immortalise every one. So, to celebrate weddings big and small, we asked the county’s photographers to share their favourite emotive shots. We may even have shed a tear or had a giggle over one or two ourselves!

CAKES

BAKE IT ‘TIL YOU CAKE IT! We talk wedding cake trends with the professionals

T

he wedding cake has always been a much-loved tradition, whether served as a dessert or as a take-home treat for your guests. Not only does it offer a delicious delight it also serves as a showstopping centrepiece to your reception space, which nowadays is nothing short of a work of art. We chatted to some of the county’s wedding cake makers and asked whatever could be next in the wonderful world of big-day bakes.

GIULIA O’LOREY, CAKES IN BLOOM www.cakesinbloom.co.uk

www.andreaverenini.com

Giulia (pronounced Julia) hails from Italy and is a professionally-trained pastry chef. After working at top hotels such as the Dorchester, she fell in love with wedding cakes in 2016 and hasn’t looked back. She set up Chichester-based Cakes in Bloom as a luxury cake business for the detailoriented couple and specialises in elegant and bold designs with plenty of movement, all brought to life with handmade sugar flowers.

TREND PREDICTIONS

www.imogenevephotography.co.uk

www.weddingsbytom.co.uk

Giulia says, “As we’ve all been cooped up for so long, cake trends for 2021 and 2022 are definitely leaning towards big and bold designs. I’ve also seen a lot of dessert tables, which allow guests to enjoy a variety of sweet treats as well as the big-day bake. “More personality has been shining through too with pops of colour, bespoke stencilling, monograms and custom flavours.”

TOP TIP “It can be overwhelming when looking at the world of cakes available, so it’s helpful to tell your cake designer about the most important aspect for you. Maybe you’re most interested in the wow-factor or complementing your colour palette. Let the professionals help you. We can advise you on everything from which cake stand will suit your cake to where in the venue to display it.” 61 

CLARE POPE, CLARE’S CAKE BOUTIQUE www.clarescakeboutique.co.uk Based in West Sussex Clare’s Cake Boutique was born from Clare’s love of baking with her mum as well as a request from one of her best friends to make her wedding cake 15 years ago. Now, she specialises in bespoke wedding cakes and loves nothing more than chatting to her clients and getting to know them a little, which enables her to create their dream bake for their special day. “To see the smile on someone’s face when they see one of my creations is my biggest joy,” Clare shares.

TREND PREDICTIONS Clare says, “This year is giving me a wide spectrum of designs from floral creations and modelling the bride and groom for their cake toppers, through to geode and metallic themes. It’s shaping up to be a fabulous year for variety.”

ANNIE BENNETT, LEADING LADY CAKES https://leadingladycakes.co.uk Owner of East Sussex-based Leading Lady Cakes is a trained soprano and has sung lead roles in the South East for a number of years. In fact, it’s this passion that inspired her company's name. Previously a primary teacher, Annie set up her business in 2014 and is now a full-time baker. She specialises in wedding cakes with sugar flowers and loves creating roses, lilies, peonies, poppies and a whole range of other blooms for her stunning sweet showstoppers.

TREND PREDICTIONS “I think that having to postpone their weddings has now made couples want to go ahead with them in style, so they’re not being subtle about their choice of bake. Multi-tiers are popular, as is the classic white cake, complete with bold floral embellishments in delicate blush tones.”

TOP TIP

www.johnscofieldphotography.co.uk

“Do your research and find a baker whose portfolio makes your heart sing. Most professionals won’t copy other designs, so let them create something especially for you. Give them your ideas and let them craft a one-off.”

TOP TIP “Make sure the baker you choose for your wedding is a professional with insurance and registration with their local council. The last year has seen a lot of home bakers pop up, but not all of them know about the regulations and requirements needed to run a cake-making business.” 62

CAKES SYLIVA TIPPETT, ART OF CAKE BY SYLVIA https://artofcakebysylvia.co.uk Based in Hastings, Art of Cake by Sylvia has been in business for nearly a decade. Sylvia’s passion is creativity and sees herself primarily as an artist, with her canvas being cake! She has a meticulous eye for detail and her clients tell her it shows. What’s more, Sylvia has worked hard to test and tweak all of her recipes to ensure her works of art taste every bit as amazing as they look. “I love the opportunity to bring joy into a person’s life through a bespoke and personal cake. It’s such a privilege to be a part of a couple’s wedding day,” Sylvia comments.

TREND PREDICTIONS Sylvia says, “A romantic, boho and botanical vibe is big at the moment. Think white icing embellished with greenery, wood effects and soft florals. Metallics are also popular whether it be rose gold, copper or bronze. They can be incorporated using a lustre finish on one or more of the tiers, accents on the edges of flower petals or berries, and flecks of edible gold or silver.”

TOP TIP “Be true to yourself. Think about what makes you smile and go from there. Show your cake designer your wedding mood boards complete with colour palette, flowers, attire, stationery etc. This way you’ll get a more interesting design tailored to reflect your story.”

JO STEVENS, PEEK-A-BOO CAKES www.peek-a-boocakes.co.uk Having founded Peek-a-boo Cakes in 2008 Jo creates all styles of cakes, cupcakes, favours and designs, but paramount for her is the flavour. “Couples often taste my cakes and decide to secure their date with me before we’ve even discussed design and cost,” she tells us. So, naturally she prides herself on that and ensures her bakes taste at least as good as they look.

TREND PREDICTIONS Jo says, “2021 is still in love with buttercream and florals. Cornflower blue and sage greens remain popular too, but I do have some fab cakes booked with some really creative couples that I’m looking forward to.”

TOP TIP “Try before you buy. You need to know your big-day bake tastes fab. After all, it’s not worth a penny if no one enjoys eating it. Plus, be sure to check out your supplier for insurance, health and safety, contracts etc – it’s a must for everyone’s peace of mind.”

63 

GEHYA BATCHELOR, CHIC WEDDING CAKES www.facebook.com/chicweddingcakes A disastrous experience with her own wedding bake led Gehya to night school where she learnt cake decorating, aiming to ensure others wouldn’t need to go through the same disappointment she’d encountered. It wasn’t long before she moved on to undertake further specialist training and entered British Sugarcraft Guild competitions winning gold, silver and many other awards. Keen always to work with the latest techniques, she has most recently undertaken courses in making life-like flowers, tackling perfect sharp edges and mastering the art of ganache – all popular features of modern wedding cakes.

TREND PREDICTIONS Gehya says, “I’m finding the rustic look is still popular, as are naked cakes. Although I still receive many enquiries for cupcake towers and three-tier bling bakes. Floral embellishment will always be popular whether they be fresh or sugar. However, certain blooms are poisonous so always check with your cake designer and florist if unsure.”

TOP TIP “Please don’t leave the cake until the last minute and remember that good suppliers get booked up early. Be sure to get your name down with your preferred expert and save the date as soon as you know it.”

EMMA WICKENS, WICKYWOOWOO CAKES www.wickywoowoocakes.co.uk Emma strives to create not only sweet delicious cakes that are moreish, but also stylish designs that bring two people’s personalities together. She’s been designing and baking cakes since 2012 and in that time has seen many trends, colour palettes and crazy designs come and go; but at the heart of what she does is a passion to wow her customers come what may.

TREND PREDICTIONS Emma says, “We’re seeing a rise in textured buttercream effects teamed with aromatic fresh foliage such as herbs, rosemary, lavender and citrus. Individuality is something that’s also seeing a surge. “Ombre colour effects are a popular way of achieving a dramatic look by blending different shades and asymmetrical cakes offer a modern look, playing with offcentre or varying tier heights.” 64

TOP TIP “Find a baker you can connect with and who has the skills and knowledge to turn your style preference and passions into a wow-factor wedding cake.”

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

SKY’S THE LIMIT

I love flowers! What creative ways can we include them in our wedding outside of bouquets, buttonholes and centrepieces? All of my couples have heard me preach that anything is possible with flowers. They’re not just accessories for the bridal party to hold or the groom and groomsmen to wear, they’re a timeless and essential part of your décor. Flowers can be suspended, draped, submerged, floated and attached to almost anything. Ceiling displays are proving to be a favourite in the shape of floral chandeliers or elongated trailing displays, which can really set off a marquee interior. We’ve all seen flower arches, but how about pillars of luscious foliage entwined with big blousy garden roses and sweet-scented peonies. I’ve secured flowers to many things: cars, trees, goal posts and horses to name a few. If you’re having a rustic wedding, how about a wheelbarrow bursting with blooms and overflowing with trailing ivy and soft eucalyptus? Or what about a tropical summer paradise? We’ve been known to fill a watermelon or two with striking tropical flowers surrounded by bold displays of palms and rich greens. Whatever your colour palette, style or theme flowers can create a wonderland of texture and buckets of wow factor for your special day. Don’t be afraid to ask for your dreams, that’s what we florists live for! Kelly Hardings | Bella June Flowers www.bellajuneflowers.co.uk

WITH THIS RING...

Sustainability is important to us. How is it possible to carry this through to our wedding rings? This is a topic often discussed with our customers and is something we’re passionate about. So our key piece of advice would be to look for a wedding ring supplier that’s a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council. We proudly partner Brown & Newirth who’ve been official members for three consecutive years. The RJC is the world’s only global retail body for responsible jewellery through the mine to retail supply chain. In order to become a member a supplier must undergo an audit that looks into the materials, sources and supply chains for everything they use to create their jewellery. Wider human rights and environmental assessments also take place, making accreditation a very tough but special achievement. If you’d like to know more about Brown & Newirth’s latest sustainability commitments come along to our newly refurbished showroom for a chat with one of our team of expert consultants. EXPERT ADVICE

MORE THAN WORDS

The fact that you can have your wedding at any time you choose, in any place you choose, including absolutely anything is a great place to begin. But I always come back to the main difference, which is the words. The ceremony itself is written just for you, so each one is completely personal. I believe the words you speak during your vows are among the most meaningful you’ll ever say to each other, so they should be absolutely right for you. What this all means is that you’ll be able to relax and really enjoy your ceremony just as much as the rest of your day with only happy nerves, not nervous nerves. You’ll feel confident in the knowledge that your celebrant, who’s guiding you through the most important moment in your lives, will ensure you won’t have any awkward words or phrases to stumble through. It’ll be remembered for all the right reasons. It’s worth bearing in mind that a celebrant-led ceremony isn’t legal, so you would still need to register your marriage at a Register Office, which can be taken care of shortly before your big day. Tanya Jones | Perfect Promises www.perfectpromisesuk.com

ON THE WINGS OF LOVE

It’s been a tough year and we’re delighted that our wedding is looking like it can go ahead later this year. We want to add something extra special to our plans though. What would you suggest? Upcoming weddings are the perfect opportunity to celebrate the love and relationships we’ve all missed, both between the happy couple themselves and also with friends and family. However, not all of your loved ones can be with you in person on the big day, so a beautiful white dove release is the perfect way to symbolise the love and freedom everyone wants to fly toward now. For example, we offer up

www.lightboxstudios.co.uk

What’s the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?

to five doves for the price of two symbolising those who can only be with you in spirit. Two doves come in a pretty cage on a white pillar, with extras in a heart-shaped basket, both prettily decorated with flowers and ribbons to match your theme. Always accompanied by an experienced handler, on release they rise and circle to orientate before heading off for home, giving an opportunity for beautiful photographs while putting on a stunning display. FOLLOW THE FLOCK

David Watson collaborates with local Yorkshire artist Clare Lindley to create classic British design: Resting Sheep Pocket Square. ASK THE EXPERTS

Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

SHOULDERS ON SHOW

My dress has a beautiful Bardot neckline. How can I wear my hair to really show it off?

www.wendymakin.com

Alison says: Being off-the-shoulder this style gives a glimpse of the collarbone, so I’d recommend opting for a hairstyle that shows off this area. A beautiful neckline shouldn’t be hidden by hair! If your locks are shoulder-length or shorter, wearing them down or pinned up at one side will work perfectly. For longer hair, an up do would be my first choice. A beautiful low bun can be soft or sleek – either will complement this neckline. For a more romantic look, opt for a messy chignon, perhaps incorporating some braids and tendrils falling onto the neck. A bushy ponytail will also work well. If you’re a bride who feels more comfortable with a half-up style, you might prefer your hair falling behind the shoulders or over to one side. One of my favourite looks, and the one to go for if you really want hair-down for your wedding day, is Hollywood waves. The overall effect is sleek enough not to look messy or hide your dress’ key feature. Don’t be afraid to ask your hair stylist for advice, as they’ll be able to tell you which options work best for your locks depending on length, texture and thickness.

SCHOOL OF FROCK

Emily says: There are no rights or wrongs when choosing your wedding dress for a particular setting. I believe the most important thing is for you to feel comfortable. However, a bohemian-style dress is often associated with a barn setting. Think soft flowing tulle with beaded embellishments or a full lace sheath dress with pretty capped sleeves. Depending on the time of year you may wish to opt for long sleeves or sexy spaghetti straps. Mix it up with coloured underlays of blush, oat or latte, which are popular alongside the traditional ivory. Alternatively, a mermaid or fit and flare silhouette also work beautifully in this setting and will give your body a bit more definition. Should you wish to break completely free from the norm, why not opt for a full ballgown? You can always ask your seamstress to make sure that you can bustle up your train after the ceremony to avoid guests partying on your dress.

www.woodlandhillphotography.co.uk

We’re tying the knot at a beautiful barn venue with plenty of gorgeous outdoor space. What should I be looking for in a wedding gown to suit?

BUZZ

BYE BYE TO DRY

When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

ROSY GLOW

Some exciting newness from Pixi Beauty has hit the shelves recently and I’m nuts about the +Rose Glow-y Powder (£14) in particular. This silky soft, rose infused, https://youtu.be/EO3_TuWvc3E multi-use powder can be applied as a veil of blush or highlighter adding a touch of radiance and luminosity as it brightens the complexion. What’s more, the natural mineral formula contains ceremides to give time-release moisture to the skin. THE CLEANSING EXPRESS

Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk

POLISH PERFECTION

Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.

SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk

BE AT PEACE

Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com

HAIR REPAIR

If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 85

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley

A

nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 86

Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry

strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair

BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrientdense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to haircare. The integrity of a product and what

hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients. ❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily

at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-or-death situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 87

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

H

Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

PRETTY AS A PICTURE

As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!

Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.

Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.

We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

A room full of candles is a must!

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.

Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.

This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 91
