NEW OUTDOOR WEDDING VENUE LAUNCHING DECEMBER 2020
Tilgate Park Weddings A VENUE LIKE NO OTHER
MAZE • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS
Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.
THE WALLED GARDEN
Be amongst be the first to this married in ing award-winn venue
Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines all adorned with thousands of fairy lights. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats.
EVENTS ARENA
The perfect location to host a large marquee for your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Measuring more than 1,000 square metres, there’s ample room for extra entertainment like a band or giant garden games and it is conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around every twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Here at YSXW HQ we can’t get enough of the weddingrelated expertise our local suppliers have to offer. This invaluable wisdom is born from years of experience and we love nothing more than sharing that with you. So, when we discovered magician Stephen James’ blog we thought it was about time we brought it to your attention! After all, there’s such handy hints as “6 Wedding Speech Mistakes,” and “How to Choose a Magician,” as well as our favourite: “4 Reasons to Book Wedding Magic.” Let’s take a closer look! Stephen’s first reason is to get guests excited. He says, “Walking around a drinks reception I see everyone perk up as I tell them which word they’re thinking of, turn lottery tickets into cash before their eyes or surprise them with smoke and fire.” Secondly, he tells us that a magician can fill in the gaps – “This can be when photos are being taken, while waiting for food, or even at the party later on. As a magician I fill these gaps making them a highlight of your day that people remember.” Next is breaking the ice. Stephen explains, “A magician brings the group on each table together as they all experience the magic and after I’ve performed, they usually go beyond small talk to discussing theories on how I pushed their wine bottle through the table!” Finally, as if you need any more reason to book a magician: photos and videos. After all, what could be better than a spot of magic to provide your photographer and videographer with ample opportunity to catch guests laughing and interacting? The proof’s in the pudding so click the play button on the image to see Stephen at work. Also, check out www.stephenjamesmagic.uk
READY AND WAITING Crawley Borough Council has launched the town’s newest wedding venue: Tilgate Park. This beautiful space is now licensed to host weddings and has availability for 2021 dates and beyond. The Walled Garden boasts the most stunning scenery including peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events area for a reception marquee and a café, making it the ideal location for celebrations. What’s more the Family Garden has been transformed into the magical Wedding Garden, able to seat up to 100 either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour beneath which you can say your “I dos.” Utterly charming! Councillor Chris Mullins, cabinet member for wellbeing at Crawley Borough Council says, “Tilgate Park is a stunning place to visit, but now with the chance to celebrate your big day there, this is a very exciting adventure. The Tilgate Park team has worked extremely hard to create a magical venue that you and your guests will remember forever.” To find out more turn to page 23 for our characterful venues feature. It’s heartwarming to know that in times of crisis everyone in the healthcare community has pulled together and worked tirelessly to help those in need, taking care of us all at great personal risk and sacrifice. As a token of their gratitude the team at Southdowns Manor would like to get involved by giving something back to these wonderful people, and are offering all NHS and emergency service workers 10 per cent off of their wedding package costs. The venue’s Cresta Jerrard told us, “We simply cannot thank them all enough for everything they’re doing for us right now. So, we hope to be able to make their wedding dreams come true and hope this gesture goes some way to seeing that happen.” To find out more about your eligibility for this offer, simply get in touch on 01730 763 800 or email enquiries@southdownsmanor.co.uk 10
FIVE MINUTES WITH… This issue we catch up with Susan Quinn of Quinn’s Events, wedding coordinator and exclusive wedding caterer for the beautiful Slindon House in Arundel. Please tell us a little about yourself and what you do. I began my culinary career by completing my apprenticeship as a commis chef at The Berkley Hotel in London. I specialised as a pastry chef in some of London’s top establishments including the renowned Groucho Club. Following a career break to raise my two young boys, I moved to West Sussex with my family. Keen to establish new culinary roots there, I launched Quinn’s Catering. While I’ve catered for many different events it’s with wedding catering that I’ve really been able to develop an enviable reputation. We can’t stop thinking about how incredible the food from last issue’s Classically Bohemian shoot looked. Can you tell us more about the dishes you created? My aim was to demonstrate the range of cuisine I offer by preparing dishes that looked delicious on the plate and complemented the wonderful colours of the beautiful rooms at Slindon House. I chose a vivid salmon tartare with dill beetroot and avocado as a starter, a spiced cannon of lamb with parmentier potatoes, carrot puree, chargrilled tender stems and courgettes and a mint salsa verde for main course and finished off with a wonderful dark rich chocolate mousse, dark chocolate truffle, vanilla home-made ice cream and freeze-dried strawberries. I also provided a European/Asian fusion alternative starter of burrata with peaches and plums and a tomato and basil reduction, Asian-infused duck breast, sweet potato fondant, shredded greens and mange tout with a honey glaze for the main course and a raspberry frangipane tart, raspberry sorbet, fudge and popping candy to complete the creation. Where possible I always strive to use locally sourced and organic ingredients. What can couples expect from their wedding day at Slindon House? Slindon House, set in the South Downs, is a beautiful historical building with extensive grounds and far-reaching views to the sea beyond. As the venue coordinator and sole in-house caterer, I help to bring couples’ wedding dreams to life. You can choose to host your reception inside the House, or perhaps set up a marquee among the grounds. Civil ceremonies can be held in a number of rooms and there’s a beautiful Victorian conservatory that’s perfect for arrival drinks and canapes. Slindon House is an exclusive-use venue, so you’ll have plenty of time the day before to dress it to your taste. You’ll also have the flexibility to tailor your menu through Quinn Events and can even choose to provide your own bubbly and alcohol. We’ll be on hand if you need any advice or guidance. For further information, head over to www.slindonhouse.co.uk and www.quinnevents.co.uk

Set in the historical Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens estate near Horsham, Restaurant Interlude has recently won an AA Rosette award. This follows the achievement in 2019 of a first Michelin Star for executive chef Jean Delport and his team. The award inspector commented that the kitchen at Interlude takes its cue from the seasons, going on to say, “It makes full use of pickings from its own gardens, as well as foraging and tapping into the local food network for top-notch Sussex produce. Expect bright, lively flavours in epic-length tasting format, from beef tartare smoked with gorse flowers, to poached plaice with parsley puree and knotweed vinegar, or 28-day aged Middlewhite pork with wild garlic capers.” Book online at www.restaurant-interlude.co.uk/reservations for your chance to sample the showstopping fare that could make up your wedding breakfast if you choose to say “I do” at Leonardslee.

REAL WEDDINGS
L
aena’s first impression of Jonathan, on overhearing him converse fluently in another language at a mutual friend’s birthday party, was that of an exotic Italian gentlemen. However, once she’d headed over to speak to him, it materialised that he wasn’t Italian at all! Nonetheless, their connection was instantaneous, so much so he proposed to her that same night! It only took Laena seven years to say “yes.” The couple were on a mini-break in the Peak District when Jonathan decided to take another stab at proposing. He took her to the peak of Thorpe Cloud and that’s where he asked his all-important question again, this time in earnest. Attention turned to the venue search and Laena and Jonathan had lined up a number of options, but once they’d viewed Worthing Dome the rest were forgotten. Not only did the beauty of the building sell itself, but it also held meaning for the pair since they’d been to see Despicable Me 2 there on their first date. By the time these enthusiastic foodies had seen the incredible menu options it was a done deal. We were excited to find out more about this big day and caught up with bride Laena to get the lowdown…
SETTING THE SCENE The pair opted for an earthy yet vibrant palette of yellow, orange and teal, and the chair sashes in particular really made the latter pop when it came to the venue styling. Laena created the centrepieces herself using copper lanterns, fairylights, pine cones and wooden wreaths embellished with faux flowers complementing the palette. She was then able to get in touch with local florist Greenfingers to match the colours in fresh blooms for the bouquets. The bride joined forces with her sister to design and create the table plan. She kept to the natural theme by painting circles of leaves and utilising spare faux flowers. Her sister then calligraphed the guests’ names. The wooden table numbers were suspended inside the centrepiece lanterns and Laena’s sister again used her calligraphy skills to write out the place names on small wood pieces. The favours were super-cute bags of coffee from a supplier in Hull, a favourite with the couple. “We would proudly say we’re coffee snobs,” says Laena. Each one was labelled with their guests’ names along with a personal message thanking them for being part of the special day. The cake was all about the flavour. “We had cupcakes with a large cutting cake presented on a large handcarved wooden stand. The cupcakes were flavoured with elderflower and raspberry, and lemon and white chocolate, while the cutting cake was a delicious chocolate bake with orange curd,” Laena explains.
LOOKING THE PART The bride wore a tea-length dress, Rosalyn from True Bride’s Brighton Belle collection. “As I’m quite short, I didn’t want to go for a full-length dress,” she explains. “I knew what I was looking for and tried on a few from this retro-style collection, but the one I said ‘yes’ to was head and shoulders above the rest. The reaction from my mother and my bridesmaids confirmed it,” she continues. 29

REAL WEDDINGS Jonathan wore a navy blue tail suit paired with a grey tweed waistcoat, teal tie and pocket hanky. His look was kept from Laena until the wedding day as a surprise for her. The groomsmen were dressed similarly, but wore their suits with navy waistcoats instead. The bridesmaids also wore tea-length dresses, which matched the palette teal. The bride gifted both with pearl jewellery in colours to suit their personalities.
TIME TO CELEBRATE The reception was kept simple given the restrictions in place at the time. The wedding breakfast was followed by speeches, cake and coffee, and the day drew to a close at 8pm. “It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with our closest family and loved ones,” Laena says. The most memorable moment of the day for the bride was reaching the top of the staircase to see her groom across the room. She tells us, “I really had to try to stop myself crying with so much happiness. My cheeks hurt by the time I was standing next to him. The relief we felt having finally made it to the altar was overwhelming. Once the registrar announced us as husband and wife, we looked at each other and said: ‘we did it!”
LOVE IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS Laena tells us more about the challenges faced when the Covid crisis destroyed the plans of so many: “We were actually already planning an intimate wedding of 30 people and had booked our suppliers well in advance of the pandemic hitting. The biggest adjustment was to the ceremony as the 30 permitted by the government had to include suppliers. Our venue suggested we stream the ceremony to some of our guests in the downstairs room and Jonathan was able to make this happen thanks to his knowledge of computers. We made the best of the situation for the guests watching the live stream providing them with popcorn and 3D glasses. “We also needed to spread our guests out across more tables to ensure the social distancing rules were met. Fortunately all I had to do was make more centrepieces, which I enjoyed doing. Our venue was extremely accommodating with the necessary changes, and the team was constantly on standby for us whenever new announcements were made. “The lead up to the big day was a complete rollercoaster. It was tough with so many constant unknowns, but the support we were able to give each other made us realise how important this day was to us and that we were definitely doing it for the right reasons.”
WISE WORDS Laena says, “The most important piece of advice I can offer is not to do everything alone, and trust your suppliers – they can give you the best guidance based on years of experience. If plans have to change, before you start contacting suppliers and guests, just take a step back and let yourself process it. A good G&T will always help too! “Booking as many suppliers as possible well in advance makes a huge difference. Going to wedding fairs really helps with inspiration, and be sure to load up on magazines, they have great stories and ideas through all seasons.” 31

TODAY IS MY NEW
favourite day Rebecca and Mike’s fondness for Winnie-the-Pooh added special meaning to their chosen wedding venue Images courtesy of Kelsie Scully Photography
R
ebecca thought Mike wanted to chat up her friend when he approached them at a bar on a night out in 2012, but it was actually Rebecca who’d caught his eye. “We talked for about half an hour before exchanging numbers. His natural humour, charm and handsome looks had won me over,” she remembers. On a Sunday morning in February, six years after that first meeting, Mike suggested going for a walk to Greenwich Park, a meaningful spot for them. “He led the way through the park, up and down hills, I now know he was trying to find a quiet spot, free of dog walkers,” Rebecca tells us. “When we eventually stopped, he asked me to point out buildings in the skyline and when I turned around, he was on one knee. I was in shock and cried immediately, so we had to continue our walk for another hour to let it sink in before ringing our family to give them the news,” she continues. Choosing Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield, where the bride’s sister got married and where she attended Sunday School was an easy choice and felt really special to her. Deciding on Buxted Park felt equally simple once the couple had visited. “We fell in love with it. It completely suited our theme and vision for an intimate wedding. Plus, it’s set within Ashdown Forest where the Winnie-thePooh stories were written – Pooh bear was my favourite childhood toy and I used to play pooh sticks as a kid,” Rebecca explains. Join us as the bride shares her account of the big day… 35
On the day we were both filled with pure happiness, joy and a feeling of completion. We were living every single second in the moment with all of our friends and family around us. It really was the best day of our lives.
We used places that held special meaning to us for our table names. We then linked our guests to the table they were on.
My cousin produced a beautiful table plan, which we presented on an easel and decorated with eucalyptus.
My sister is a brilliant artist and sketched a couple of Winne-thePooh drawings complete with quotes. One was for the back of our invitations and the other for the back of our menus. We wanted our place names to be fun, so Mike suggested using a comedy polaroid photo of each guest when they were young. Everyone loved this idea and we also had a polaroid camera for people to use and stick pictures into our guest book.
Mum and I made 100 shortbread biscuits in two shapes – one in the shape of musical notes as I’m a musician, and one in the shape of Spurs’ logo. We also wanted to showcase the talents of our family members, so my cousin, who is a graphic designer, created our wedding logo using our initials and our blue colour palette, which featured throughout our stationery. 36
Zuzana at Fig and Flower was absolutely terrific in producing our gorgeous floral centrepieces using eucalyptus with blue and cream blooms.
REAL WEDDINGS Mike’s mum is a brilliant baker, so we asked her to kindly make a classic tiered cake to suit our theme and the result was delicious.
As well as the centrepieces, Zuzana also created the flowers for the church and some extra arrangements for Buxted. She’s incredibly talented and her displays couldn’t have been more perfect.
Our food was delicious! We’re both chocoholics so it had to be a feature of our dessert and our mission was to provide as much drink as possible to give people a good time. It definitely showed on the dancefloor! I knew I wanted some lace on my dress, with long sleeves, an A-line silhouette and a boho style. Most people said I’d surprise myself and go for the opposite, but I actually didn’t and found exactly what I was looking for in a Lillian West dress, under the Justin Alexander brand, designed by Tony Mentel, who lives in Hove.
Mike and his ushers wore beautiful navy suits along with some very special groom/usher socks bought by his mum. All of the men wore waistcoats and looked so smart. The groom wore a different coloured tie to stand out. 37
The bridesmaids were dressed in long light blue dresses and looked stunning.
We booked a live band for the evening’s entertainment, as we love cheesy pop music and dancing. Mike chose our first dance song, Closer Still by Paul Freeman and they performed it perfectly. We had a choir of 16 friends perform at the church, which was so personal. They sang as I walked down the aisle, as we signed the register and at the hotel later in the evening. Another friend played the organ for us too.
Just be yourselves and do what you want to do, have fun and don’t put too much pressure on yourselves. At the end of the day it’s all about the both of you marrying each other, so stay focused on that and have the best time with the people you care about.

euben found himself attracted to Holly’s bright blue eyes when they first met at the care home where they both worked. “He later found out they were contact lenses and I actually have green eyes,” Holly laughs. The pair started out as friends, but the more they chatted, and the better they got to know each other, it became clear things were meant to be. Reuben had gone to great lengths to find out more about Holly, researching her likes and dislikes on Facebook. It was here he unearthed her favourite poem and gifted her a huge personalised chocolate bar with the verse on the back. It must be love! The pair didn’t want their colleagues to know about their blossoming romance so they dated
in secret for almost a year. Reuben proposed on Christmas Day 2018, having placed the engagement ring under the tree. “I’m a bit of a geek and love anything to do with the royals,” Holly confides. “He chose a sapphire diamond ring for me, just like the one Kate Middleton has, which I love,” she tells us. The pair’s wedding plans, like so many others, were disrupted by the pandemic, but it eventually went ahead on 22nd September, 2020. We caught up with Holly to find out more about the challenges faced and overcome along the way, as well as getting the lowdown on the big day itself…

For the bridesmaids I wanted something to suit their figures and to make sure they felt comfortable, happy and confident. We went with the Bardot style in pink lace. They both looked beautiful.
Our first wedding was booked in Cyprus for the 3rd June 2020, which had to be cancelled when Thomas Cook ceased trading. We then rescheduled for 5th May at Alexander House, which again had to be postponed due to Covid. All of our suppliers were absolutely amazing. They all went above and beyond and changed their dates ensuring ever ything was taken care of.

Reuben wore a blue suit with a pink spotted tie to complement our wedding palette, and his groomsmen wore their own suits, also paired with pink spotted ties and buttonholes to match Reuben’s.
My mum walking me down the aisle was really special. I tried not to look at her once we’ d set off since we were both holding back the tears. Our ceremony was at 4pm and I walked down the aisle to Pachbel in D.
My beautiful boho dress had a high neck and sleeves wit h pink floral embellishments and hand-s ewn sequins. It was exactly the sort of gown I wanted and I loved weari ng it on the day.

Reuben and I are both pretty shy and come from small families. Neither of us wanted a big wedding, so when it came to guest list restrictions, it didn’t impact our plans much. We were just thrilled it coul d go ahead.
Having a small wedding allowed us to spend more on the things that mattered to us, like the delicious me nu, quirky dress, beautiful personalised we dding ring and a stunning overnight stay at the hotel. We’ve been able to have our dre am wedding without getting into deb t, which has meant we’ve been able to buy our new home and start our married life tog ether.

P
ark House Hotel and Spa, Midhurst, is a luxury countryhouse venue that hosts intimate, exclusive-use weddings in its barn and across the extensive grounds. “We were inspired by its walled garden and immaculate lawns,” says shoot coordinator Giulia O’Lorey of Cakes in Bloom. The plan was to highlight the beauty of Sussex while showcasing a wealth of talented local suppliers. “We were also mindful of the pandemic and were eager to show how a smaller romantic wedding can still be breathtaking,” Giulia explains. “For many modern couples highlighting important aspects of their relationship and personality is just as important as the stylistic impact of it, so it’s of paramount importance that their wedding day reflect that,” she adds. With all of this in mind, the collaborators were brought together to demonstrate how their flexible and first-class services can be personalised for each one-of-a-kind celebration. This is beautifully reflected everywhere you look from the embroidery on the veil to the custom invitations; the ethically, handmade, couture gown to the seasonal sweetpea and wildflower forals.

hotographer Sarah Carmody and make-up artist Lucy Meyer, the talented duo behind these incredible images, never imagined just how much we’d all be needing some divine intervention when they started planning the project. “By bringing together the romance, elegance and angelic inspiration behind this story, we hope to give you some faith and joy for 2021,” Sarah and Lucy say. Using a palette of warm tones the team crafted a Renaissance feel and, Sarah continues, “The angelic element of this shoot was something I’ve been wanting to create since losing my mum eight years ago. All Saints Chapel was the perfect venue to bring this to fruition and evoked the perfect ambience for me to capture.”

COME RAIN OR SHINE Fabulous wedding photography whatever the weather
L
et’s talk about the elephant in the room: the great British weather. The idea of a wedding washout might be giving you sleepless nights, but don’t let it. Our photography experts are here to offer some words of wisdom.
www.nickifelthamphotography.com
“This windy-day picture cracks me up every time. Hold on to your hats and get a good hairdresser who uses a strong hairspray! We took a lot of photos indoors at this wedding as the gale force gusts were a bit too much for some of the older relatives.” – Nicki Feltham, Nicki Feltham Photography

www.mundialphoto.co.uk
“You shouldn’t need to worry about your photographer adding to the stress of a difficult decision if the weather moves your outdoor wedding inside. They’ll be ready to quicky set up elsewhere, acting quickly, changing the light settings and locking them in. Good to go.” – Nick Henley, Mundial Photo www.mundialphoto.co.uk
"Let your photographers do the work! If it’s pouring down, they’ll find the perfect location so all you have to do is pose for the shot then return to your guests. For me it’s about research, research, research – find a spot and set up the shot!” – Nick Henley www.mundialphoto.co.uk
“If you’re planning to take a stroll in the fields for some group or couple shots, be sure to bring a different pair of shoes to change into and in cold weather be prepared with warm clothing or your shivers may show. Your photographer will likely have packed an umbrella to offer you, so never let the rain get in the way of an iconic image. If I’m lucky enough to capture a rainbow, I don’t let the guests know until after I’ve taken the shot or I’d miss that perfect pose.” – Nick Henley

Will you be converted by this subtle approach to an alternative style? Images courtesy of Amy Davies Photography
P
hotographer and shoot coordinator Amy Davies set out to create a dramatic look for this project. “There are lots of extremes when it comes to the gothic style,” she says, but admits that none of them are likely to appeal greatly to a bride who might consider her everyday style somewhat short of alternative. “So, we chose a broadly gothic theme with plenty of smiles and laughter, paired with a soft and light twist,” she continues before adding: “It is possible to have a black wedding dress without the black lipstick!” So, Amy headed off with her models, Chloe and Ollie (who are a real couple and clearly very much in love) first to St Mary De Haura Church in Shoreham to create a just-wed feel, before moving on to Rottingdean Windmill.

Lockdown meant that so many talented and creative people were effectively benched, so as soon as restrictions were eased and it was safe to do so, Claire and her team we ready and raring to get their creative juices flowing once more. “I’ve been shooting weddings for eight years, and 2020 was the first year I’ve done less than five. We all needed something and this was it,” she says. Although spring is now on the horizon, here at Your Sussex Wedding we’re not quite ready to let go of the inspiring autumn and winter months just yet, so we were desperate to show you these warming seasonal images before we turn our attention to sunny days and pastel palettes! 63

HOT TOPIC
Our experts offer stellar advice on planning a personality-filled wedding day We’re in the process of downsizing our wedding, how can we still make the day everything we’ve dreamed of?
An intimate wedding gives you the freedom to express your own personality with no boundaries on style, theme or venue. It’s easy to get caught up with the idea of a ‘big day,’ but a small, bespoke ceremony makes this personal moment of connection beautiful and touching. Venue choices become much broader with a smaller wedding, and expenditure decreases the fewer people you invite, allowing you more to spend on the finer details. Think small on numbers, but big on details! For example, flowers can be more creative: flower crowns, blooms entwined in your hair, flower walls, bigger bouquets, floral centrepieces and scattered petals – the possibilities are practically endless. Your wedding breakfast will also become a much more intimate affair, with no more
fretting over the seating plan. A table of 15 can be stunning with vintage crockery, glassware, flowers and candles. You can also serve more interesting dishes, perhaps locally sourced, seasonal food, as simple or extravagant as you like. The freedom of a downsized wedding enables you to create the day of your dreams by bringing your vision to life. Don’t forget though, you can still have a huge wedding party once rules allow. You could even choose two totally different looks. Whatever you do, don’t hold back. This is your moment, don’t be afraid to make it your day, regardless of the size of your guest list. Claire Field, www.instagram.com/claire_mariemua Psst… Head over to www.your-sussex. wedding/news-headlines to see the shoot by Claire and a fab team of Sussex suppliers who got together to demonstrate these ideas.

SMALL IS MIGHTY
BE BOLD, BE BRAVE, BE YOU How can we inject our personalities into our ceremony so that it’s uniquely ours?
If you have a church or register office ceremony, you’ll know what to expect. It’s all about the process that every couple needs to follow to make your union legal. You’ll have a set service following rules and guidelines. I myself had a register office ceremony; it was lovely but filled with words set by a stranger. The main difference with a celebrant-led service is that it’s not a legal marriage, but a wedding ceremony for each person to declare their feelings in vows they make to each other. My job is to make sure that they’re the most important words of your day and they can take as long or as little time as you wish. I’ll also spend time getting to know you, learning as much about your personalities as possible. Everyone has their own style and some ideas are more unique than others – what do you say to the couple who want a nudist ceremony, or the lady who wants to be Princess Leia?! But it’s ok if that’s what makes it personal to you. So be it Luke Skywalker or Minnie Mouse your personality will shine through on your day. So go for it. Be unique and have the ceremony that means the most to you both. Merie Brown, www.orangeroseceremonies.com 70
EXPERT ADVICE
GAME FOR A LAUGH
What quirky extras can we add to our venue to bring more personality to our day? One point to consider as you plan is what your guests will be doing while you’re off having your photos taken. Having a selection of over size and fun games will not only give them something to do, but also act as a great ice-breaker getting the conversation flowing along with the drinks. Beat the Buzzer, bowling and a coconut shy are all great, and you can make a real feature out of the space, adding some seating and props to work with your theme. After spending endless nights deliberating over the seating plan there are bound to be some guests who won’t know each other. By having some games on the table or perhaps even a magician, you’ll get them all chatting.

EAT GREEN!
We’re keen for our wedding to be as sustainable as possible. How can we extend this to our catering? This should be straightforward as well as fun. Just consider our top three tips when you’re planning: ❤ Use local: Choosing a caterer local to your venue is an effective way of keeping sustainability at the forefront. Not only will this reduce the mileage of their back and forths, it will also decrease the mileage of their staff, who likely also live locally. ❤ Ask about local produce: Caterers invested in championing local produce are reducing their carbon footprint and helping their local economy to flourish, both important commitments to sustainable working. Ask your caterers to also use seasonal fruits and vegetables for a delicious triple sustainability hit. ❤ Can you reduce your meat intake? Opting to serve your guests a vegetarian or vegan starter, or even making your menu fully vegan, will go a long way towards reducing the carbon footprint of your day. We have an incredible new vegan menu catering for your every need with absolutely no compromise on quality or quantity. Pippa O’Neill, www.tietheknotcatering.co.uk
LOST FOR WORDS?
We’re looking for a special reading for our ceremony, but can’t find anything that is truly ‘us.’ What would you suggest? Why not try a completely original, bespoke rhyming speech or poem? When my customers come to me, I ask them to answer a simple questionnaire requesting details about their lives – funny stories, nicknames, how they met, where they got engaged, and so on. Then I weave these thoughts into a rhyming poem. They’re available as an email, so they can be read during the ceremony, although many opt for the foiled, framed and gift-wrapped option, which makes a beautiful art piece and lasting memory of the special day. A bespoke poem is a truly original gift and when used in place of a speech, can take a huge amount of pressure off of those who’ve been asked to give an address. Lizzie Mole, www.theoriginalpoet.com 71

T
o veil or not to veil? Gold or silver? Tiara or hair vine? These may well be the next batch of questions whizzing around your head once you’ve said “yes” to the dress. So, we talked to the county’s experts on all things bling to bring you the lowdown on completing your all-important look with flair.
FINISHES AND COLOURS “There are so many choices when it comes to the edges of your veil. Satinedged, crystal beading, pearls, corded and beautiful lace. There are also so many different colours you may opt for, from white or ivory, to dark ivory or pink, and oyster or champagne.”
CATHEDRAL “From nine to 25 feet long a cathedrallength veil trails along the floor behind the bride. This type of showstopper is normally worn with an equally grand wedding dress.”
Elbow and fingertip “As the names suggest these veils are elbow or fingertiplength. These are ideal for more fitted dresses, which will emphasise your waist.”
To know a veil Who better to turn to for advice on choosing the right veil than a bridal boutique owner? Allow us to introduce the lovely Emily Cumming of Bella May Bridal (www.bella-may-bridal.co.uk) in Hurstpierpoint. She’s here to guide you through this potentially confusing minefield.
TWO TIERS
“Traditionally a bride wears a veil over her face. To achieve this demure look a two-tier veil is what’s required. The tier that covers the face is called a blusher, so named as it’s intended to save the bride’s blushes!”

Accessorise & shine Shelly Bond of Shelly Bond Bridal (www.shellybondbridal.co.uk) says, “Choosing the right hair accessories is an exciting time, as they’re very special pieces sometimes passed on through the generations. It’s really important to choose a hair adornment that not only complements your dress, but also your hairstyle. The best advice I can offer is: try not to rush in. Take some close-up pictures of any design features in the dress such as lace, beading or belt as these are all elements that can be used to design a beautiful piece to complement your gown perfectly.” She continues, “Consider the look of your dress. If it’s lace or boho for example a vine or flower crown would finish the look beautifully. Alternatively, an elegant simple style would be complemented well with some pins or a real statement piece.”
“It’s also really important to consider your hair type and style. If you have fine hair avoid anything too heavy and opt for something delicate. I’d recommend waiting until after your trial with your stylist as they’ll advise what will work best once you’ve chosen your look,” Shelly adds.
“Bridal fashion has changed over the years and now it’s all about decorating the hair with pins, combs and vines.” – Shelly Bond Bridal

JEWELLERY AND ACCESSORIES
WEDDING RING Q&A
How do you find matching wedding rings that suit both partners? Andrew Leggett of Aurum Designer Jewellers (www.aurumjewellers.com) says, “Many couples like the idea of matching wedding rings, but can’t find a single design that appeals to both of them. If you opt for bespoke rings you can find the features that you agree on and incorporate these into the design of your own ring. Sometimes adjusting the scale can overcome the problem. The difference between a dainty lady’s ring and a chunky man’s ring is purely a matter of dimensions. With a pair of bespoke rings, you each decide on the exact width and depth of band that suit you, then common design features can be applied to both. For example, why not go for the same design in different colourways? Seek the advice of a jewellery designer or goldsmith who can create a pair of rings perfect for the both of you.”
RING-A-DING-BLIN
Should we go for a traditional band or something with precious stones? Grace says, “Plain wedding bands are simple and elegant, they can be made in a variety of different metals. Diamond bands offer a more varied style choice with plenty of sparkle for a modern twist. It’s all down to personal preference.”
How long before our wedding should we begin to look for our wedding bands? Grace Allen of Timothy Roe Fine Jewellery (www.timothyroe.com) says, “We suggest six months before the big day as a reasonable time scale to begin looking. This time allows you to try on multiple styles with no pressure. We estimate an average of a six to eight weeks for us to make you a bespoke wedding band.”
What metal should my wedding band be? Grace says, “Think about your engagement ring and wedding band as one rather than two separate entities. You’ll likely find yourself looking at wedding rings in the same metal. This can be for multiple reasons such as the rings’ wear against each other, cleaning and aftercare. Try to replicate a similar thickness to your engagement ring for comfort and a cohesive look. For grooms, your wedding ring often sits by itself meaning you don’t necessarily have to match your band to anything else you wear. However, you may want to coordinate with your partner if you’re feeling traditional!
G
Along with your dress your wedding jewellery is another way of expressing your personality. To ensure the two work together in perfect harmony, consider your neckline, which will govern your choice of necklace and earrings. Emily of Bella May Bridal (www.bella-may-bridal.co.uk) tells us more.
V-NECK A V-pendant necklace will showcase this neckline without detracting from it. A pearl droplet with matching earrings is a traditional choice and complements most ivory dresses. Alternatively, add some colour by choosing your birthstone or a hue to complement your palette.
Strapless
With a strapless dress you have a large canvas of exposed skin so you can go for a bold choice. A fully encrusted crystal necklace can look stunning when it lays half way between the line of your dress and your collarbone. Finish this look with a pair of crystal earrings.
SWEETHEART A simple necklace will highlight this flattering cut, with a pear-shaped drop or a single solitaire stone adding a little extra. 75

IT’S HIGH TIME
ASK THE EXPERTS
My dress has a high neckline with lots of lace. How would you suggest I wear my hair to complement it? Toni says: I always recommend having a professional consultation with your wedding hair stylist after you’ve chosen your gown. They’ll possess the expert knowledge and can advise you of the perfect style to complement your gown, frame and bone structure. Think about elongating the neck, slimming the jawline, and showing off the collar bone. This can all be done with the right do, so choose wisely. High-neck dresses come in so many forms from halter neck and bateau to collared. For you, I’d want to create a very elegant and simple style where the neckline and detail of the dress can be perfectly flaunted.
CUT TO THE CHASE What’s a cut crease and how do I achieve this look?
eauty BQ&A
Local professionals offer their tips on looking your big-day best
PERFECT POUT
My lips are quite thin, but I’d love to give the impression of a fuller pout. How can I achieve this naturally? Ali says: Taking care of your lips is a good place to start as you’ll need a good base for your lipstick. Exfoliate using a lip scrub or by gently brushing in a circular motion with a toothbrush. I love Lip Scrubtious by MAC, which smoothes, softens and hydrates. Drinking plenty of water will also help, as will regularly applying a hydrating lip balm. Peppermint oil is a natural circulation enhancer bringing more blood flow to the lips, so it’s a bonus if your lip balm contains it.
Becky says: A cut crease is a technique used to define the crease with contrasting eyeshadow colours and little blending. This gives definition by extending it slightly above where it naturally lies, lifting and opening your eyes. It can create depth, dimension and definition all at the same time. To achieve the look, start with a primer all over to ensure your products stay in place and don’t blend together. Keeping your eyes open, start applying your chosen colour above the crease and close to the brow bone. Go back and forth keeping this section nice and blended. To ‘cut’ the crease, you will need a foundation or concealer. Apply this across your eyelid with a flat concealer brush, then set in place with either a light colour eyeshadow, for a more natural look, or glitter for a bold, glamorous look. Make sure this is only applied to your eyelid on top of the concealer keeping the eyeshadow above the crease glitter-free.
Now for the make-up: take your foundation or concealer over your lips and buff in with a foundation brush before dotting a touch of highlighter just above the Cupid’s bow. Next add a soft, thin line of contour underneath the bottom lip. Steer clear of dark colours if you have thin lips as they will make them appear flatter. It’s best to opt for natural colours, especially while mastering the technique. Choose a lip liner a shade or two darker than your lipstick and overline your lips. Use small feathering strokes slightly outside your natural lip line and blend back. Then if your lipstick wears off, you won’t be left with just a line! Next apply your lipstick using a lip brush, blot and apply a second coat. Finish with a touch of gloss in the centre for that full-on light reflecting pout. You could also try a plumping product like Charlotte Tilbury Collagen Lip Bath.

A FIVE-NIGHT LUXURY HONEYMOON TO THE SEYCHELLES WORTH +£3,500
L
ocated on a mile-long stretch of picture-perfect beach, Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa brings together all the elements of a dream honeymoon. It offers relaxation, pristine beaches, modern villas, a first-class spa and fine dining, along with activities, including hiking through one of the largest national parks in the Seychelles and exploring life below the waves in the surrounding National Marine Park. At the heart of the resort, by the beautiful landscaped infinity pool, our lucky winners will be able to choose from a variety of bars and dining venues. From modern Mediterranean Portobello restaurant to the beautiful beachfront Four Degrees serving fresh local seafood, expertly cooked in front of you on the grill. One place you must dine while at Labriz is Grann Kaz. Renovated to its former glory, this former Seychellois plantation house is the resort’s traditional Creole restaurant, serving delicious local cuisine on the terrace and in the gardens. If you fancy some post-wedding pampering, Eforea Spa at Labriz
is one of the most stunning spas in the world, with spacious couple’s therapy suites and unrivalled views of the jungle-clad slopes of Mount Dauban and the sparkling Indian Ocean. Or if leaving your villa seems like too much work, the spa also offers in-villa massages, so you can truly relax together. For even deeper tranquillity, why not take part in a yoga session on the beach, or opt for a private class with the resort's own yoga teacher? You can while away your days wandering through lush vegetation and see some of the island’s wildlife – and spectacular sights – on guided mountain walks through the equatorial forest with the resident naturalist, or take in the view under the sea with a Crystal Kayak around the shores of Silhouette. Cap off your day in paradise with a romantic sunset cruise, watching the sun go down over the Indian Ocean, followed by dinner with your feet in the sand, under the stars at the 4th Degree Restaurant. Or, of course, you could simply pull up a sun lounger on the beach or by the pool and relax.
