Tilgate Park Weddings YOUR VENUE YOUR WAY

OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS BEAUTIFUL WEDDING GARDEN • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • MAZE • Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats. EVENTS ARENA At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away. Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

inally, the sun is shining! It feels like it’s been a long time coming doesn’t it? As much as I’m very much a winter bunny, I must admit that feeling a warm breeze on my face for a change has cheered me up. My friends and I have decided to compile a bucket list of activities we’d like to enjoy this summer, and plans are well underway for our very own CWM bride’s hen do. If you’re worried about what your best gals might have planned for yours, the best way is to maintain an open line of communication. Make sure you lay down perimeters and make it abundantly clear well in advance if L plates, sashes and the like aren’t your thing. Olivia, Nolwenn and I sat bride Melissa down for a chat first to make sure we didn’t make any faux pas and asked her to provide us with a guest list and options for available dates. No doubt you’ll have been careful about your bridesmaid choices, they love you and know you well, so we’re sure you’re in capable hands. Relax and enjoy the break from planning everything yourself. You’ll find this, our summer issue, brimming with plenty of inspiration and advice as always. We take a look into planning an outdoor wedding. With the new law surrounding saying “I do” al fresco, it’s certainly something many more of you may be considering. We’re also delighted to present to you our A-Z guide to wedding catering, packed with delicous ideas. After all, happy tummies = happy guests! Still hungry for more wedspiration? Don’t forget to check out our social media channels @YourSussexWedding, @cwm_wedding, @countyweddings and of course, the latest member of the family, our YouTube channel (to find it just head over to www.youtube.com and search “County Wedding Magazines”). Chloe and Shannon were less influenced by trends when they chose their palette, but more so by Shannon’s heritage. Her family are from the Emerald Isle, so green was a must! For a bright and bubbly vibe full of joy, why not opt for something bold and beautiful? Becca and Jack’s celebratory palette allowed their personalities to shine.

NEW VENUE ALERT!

The Great Thatched Barn at new wedding venue Falmer Court dates back to the mid-13th century and is nestled in the beautiful Sussex Downs. EAST OF EDEN

Sustainable Sussex-based stationery company Green Planet Paper has launched its first 100 per cent eco-friendly, plantable wedding stationery collection: Eden. Featuring a magical, floral fantasia design, it’s comprised of save-the-dates, wedding invitations and RSVP cards, all of which are fully customisable. They can be ordered individually or as a suite. Each element is crafted from recycled paper, made in England and crammed full of native wildflower seeds, and the brand is committed to sourcing raw materials locally. Eden’s bold yet delicate watercolour design, containing an array of colourful blooms is perfect for summer nuptials. The best news is that guests can plant their cards after the big day, which with a little love and water will grow into a mini garden – a floral tribute to a wonderful day. With the wedding industry facing scrutiny about the amount of waste it generates (a single wedding of 100 produces around 400-600lbs of waste) strategic sourcing has never been more important when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint. So, it’s good to know that even if we make small changes, collectively these can amount to a significant difference. Discover more at www.green-planet-paper.co.uk

Surface designer Lisa Ibbetson runs two-hour mindful marbling workshops from her home studio in central Brighton, where she teaches students the ancient meditative, creative art of suminagashi – Japanese ink marbling. Popular among hen parties visiting the Sussex seaside, the workshops take place in a peaceful, supportive environment where you and your best gals can let go of inhibitions and flow with your own creativity using this artistic technique. Originally intended as a process for connecting human creativity to the flowing nature of water, suminagashi has its roots in Shintoism and uses various methods to apply inks to the water’s surface. The inks then evolve in soft, elegant forms before a mono-print can be made at a chosen point by transferring the pattern onto paper or card. Maximum capacity at the studio is seven at £40 per head, but larger hen parties can be accommodated at the local Hanover Community Centre or at a venue of your choice. You can get in touch with Lisa at lisaibbetson@me.com to find out more and check out https://mindfulmarbling.com 10

The Weald & Downland Living Museum is a hidden gem, located among 40 acres of glorious countryside in the Lavant Valley at the centre of the South Downs National Park. With the character of the museum as your backdrop and limited dates available each year, you’ll be assured a day that few couples get to share. Completed in 2002, the Download Gridshell was the first building of its kind built in the UK. Built from solid oak laths, bent into a double curvature, it takes its name from the shell-like shape that results. Today it

hosts ceremonies and receptions for up to 180 people. Additionally, the Upper Hall is licensed too and can seat 50. Crawley Hall is situated in the heart of the venue’s Medieval market square. Surrounded by historical buildings and cobbled paths, this charming timber-framed barn is an ideal choice for intimate “I dos” and celebrations with up to 50 guests. After the ceremony you can enjoy the museum grounds and facilities followed by a rustic picnic buffet next to the tranquil millpond. The Greenways Field is a blank canvas offering an idyllic setting and photo opportunities aplenty. Here, it’s possible to pitch a marquee for up to 500 loved ones.

There’s ample outdoor space with a picturesque courtyard that lies at the heart of the venue. It’s a space for children and the ideal spot for reception drinks and garden games. As evening falls, the gardens are lit with romantic up-lights that show off the flint and log walls of the wedding barns. Here, guests can gather around the Collecting Yard with its sumptuous sofas, firepit an al fresco bar. The simple yet romantic Dairy Barn is fully-licensed for all civil 16

ceremonies and partnerships. With a wonderful sweeping 22-metre aisle, exposed wooden beams and benches it holds up to 120 guests and can also be used after the “I dos” for a drinks reception or transformed into an entertainment room for children. There’s also an outdoor ceremony garden nestled in a tranquil spot between the resident alpaca’s field and the Dairy Barn. Using natural elements that complement the rest of the barn, The Secret Garden is a hidden gem that features a 50-foot aisle set amidst peaceful scenery and seats up to 100. The Threshing Barn can seat 120 diners and 200 loved ones can attend the evening reception. The 200-year-old barn radiates rustic charm and has plenty of space for dancing and entertaining. There’s also a Milking Parlour, which can be used as the groom’s quarters or for the bride and bridesmaids to get ready before the vows.

REAL WEDDINGS

F

ollowing an unsuccessful date in London a disheartened Becca wiled away the journey home by scrolling through Tinder. Some might argue that this was destiny, as if she’d waited until she was at home she wouldn’t have been in the same location radius as Jack and they might never have been matched. They got in touch and spent days chatting over WhatsApp before exchanging phone calls. “We knew at this point we had lots in common and the biggest tick of all was that we made each other laugh,” Becca remembers. They met in Crawley for their first date where, having bonded over their Nandos order, they moved on to bowling and shots at the pub – the rest, as they say, is history. Jack proposed in 2019, while in Dublin on a city break. As they walked through Iveagh Gardens, they stopped by a waterfall to take photos and Jack went down on one knee. Despite getting the ring box stuck in his pocket, he eventually managed to produce it and pop the question. “We spent the rest of the three-day trip with the biggest smiles on our faces,” Becca says. Read on as the newlyweds tells us more about their big day...

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Two weeks after becoming engaged, super-organised Becca was determined to secure a venue and date for a summer 2021 wedding. With her being a teacher, their dates were limited. Armed with a list of venue must-haves they started to look at locations and found the Yoghurt Rooms. “We knew it was the one for us, its relaxed vibe was exactly what we were searching for. It offered accommodation for around 30 guests, which we could have for two nights and there was unlimited capacity for the rest of the wedding party,” Becca explains. What’s more, the Yoghurt Rooms had just been granted planning permission for a bandstand to be built to hold licensed ceremonies, which was completed in 2020 and was where the couple said “I do.”

SETTING THE SCENE With a bright Mexican-inspired palette the venue styling was bold and joyful. Favours were packets of chilli seeds, which doubled as place names and tied in thematically with the Mexican wedding breakfast of tacos. The couple’s vision was for an informal wedding, so the DIY nature of the feast really worked to bring everyone together. Chicken nuggets, sausage rolls and mozzarella dippers were served as canapés – the most Becca-and-Jack thing ever, we’re told! Centrepieces featured gin bottles containing fairylights and tall taper candles in bright colours. Fairylights were also woven through the centre of the tables and coloured napkins completed the look. Flowers were arranged in coloured jam jars, with florist Bella of Arabella Floral hitting the bright and Mexican-style brief perfectly. Bright florals also decorated the big-day bake, which was also designed to complement the vibrant theme. Further bold and beautiful décor included colourful pom poms, dreamcatchers, macramé, and Mexican die-cut paper bunting. We particularly love the flower- and ribbon-adorned backdrop with ‘The Teagues’ neon sign.

LOOKING THE PART Gorgeous Becca wore Charlene by Maggie Sottero. She saw the dress online and found a stockist in Tunbridge Wells, which she visited with her mum to try it on. It was the one! “As a slightly curvier 29

REAL WEDDINGS

bride I knew there were certain things I didn’t want or that wouldn’t suit my figure, but this one complemented me in every way,” she tells us. What’s more, the gown was the perfect fit for the style of venue. The bride’s best friend and bridesmaid Dani is a jewellery artist, and she made a bespoke dreamcatcher-style necklace with earrings for Becca to wear on the big day. She then finished the boho look with a beautiful flower crown created by florist Bella. Jack had in mind to wear a light blue suit to fit the time of year, but due to Covid and shops only reopening fairly close to the wedding date, they had no option but to leave suits to quite late in the planning process. The groom ultimately chose a blue herringbone three-piece suit and paired it with a sage green tie and pocket square to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. The groomsmen were all dressed in the same suits and accessorised with tie pins bought for them as a gift. Meanwhile, the pageboy wore a light grey suit. The bridesmaids wore matching gowns in sage green and Becca even manged to find the same dress for their flowergirl who was only seven at the time. All of the ladies paired their dresses with a natural flower crown and a bracelet given to each of them as a ‘thank you’ present.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Live band Jackie Moon and The Hell Yeahs supplied the evening entertainment. Becca had known lead singer Jack for more than 15 years – he’d always been into music and had been in various bands, so she knew how good he was. “We didn’t even consider anyone else as we wanted to make our day as ‘us’ as possible and connect friends and family where we could. So many of our guests were raving about the band and it was most people’s first experience of live music since lockdown,” Becca says. The couple specifically requested eight songs that were their dancefloor must-haves and the band kindly learnt every one especially for them. There was also plenty of non-musical entertainment for guests young and old with giant croquet, beer pong, corn hole, football and kids’ fun packs. There was also a firepit fully stocked with ingredients to make smores.

“There’s nothing we’d change about our day. It was perfect and summed us up as a couple, representing everything we stand for and believe in.” MEMORABLE MOMENTS The happy couple share: “Words can’t sum up the happiness that surrounded our day. Everything went to plan and it was the sunniest day in August for our outdoor ceremony – it was beautiful and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Being on the bandstand meant we were able to see all of our guests as we exchanged our vows. It was the best day of our lives. “Every single one of our suppliers played such a substantial role in our wedding and made our day possible. We felt so lucky to have found these amazing people who understood our vision and went above and beyond anything we could ever have dreamed of.” 31

THE GETAWAY As Covid still had its grip on the travel industry at the time, the newlyweds postponed their main honeymoon to 2022 – nine days in the Maldives in June and nine days in Bali in August. But just after the big day, they set off on a week-long trip to Scotland planned by organiser-extraordinaire Becca. They started in Edinburgh with two nights at the Waldorf Hotel before heading for a treehouse experience near St Andrews. They then went back to Edinburgh, Dean Village, where they got to explore some more and watch some of the acts at the Edinburgh Fringe. Two nights at Loch Lomond followed, before their final night, which was spent in Glasgow. Becca remembers, “We had the best time and treated ourselves well – we felt privileged that we could still enjoy our time away together and make the most of our honeymoon period.”

REAL WEDDINGS

Chloe and Shannon styled their big day with a palette of emerald green and gold as a nod to Shannon’s heritage Images courtesy of DB Photography Sussex

W

e met through a mutual friend who thought: ‘I know, two girls, both gay – it must work!’” Chloe tells us. It’s a theory that so infrequently pans out, but on this occasion, it did! Chloe fell in love with Shannon’s craziness and sense of fun, as well as the laughter they shared from the moment they met. “I used to say Shannon had the loudest laugh in Burgess Hill, it’s such a cackle,” she jokes. One evening in 2019, Chloe returned home from work to discover Shannon nowhere to be found. Instead there was a huge bouquet of flowers with a note that read: “Dress code: smart. Your carriage awaits at 7pm. Don’t be late!” Chloe dutifully got ready and her chauffeur was there on the dot. She was driven around Brighton as she read

a poem Shannon had written and left in the car for her to find. Her suspicions that they were heading for the bandstand, a meaningful place for the couple, were correct and Shannon was there to meet her as she pulled up. The pair walked up the candlelit path to the bandstand where they stood in front of an ivy and rose heart and Shannon popped the question. Chloe, of course, said “Yes!” The wedding date was set for October 2021 at Buxted Park. They both adored the grounds at the venue, which was situated in an ideal spot for all of their guests. “The views from Buxted Park are stunning and the house is beautiful,” Chloe explains. Read on as she tells us more about the big day... 35

There’s quite a story behind my wedding dress! Initially I chose a lacey A-line gown with sleeves. However, Shan’s twin brother was getting married the June before our wedding and I watched my beautiful sister-in-law walk down the aisle in something incredibly similar. I didn’t feel I could wear virtually the same dress only four months later, it would look like I’d borrowed her dress! So, back to the boutique we went, this time to try on fishtail gowns. The idea was to completely alter my current dress to become a fishtail Bardot. And everything was going to plan until the consultant brought in the one – completely plain, no lace, no sleeves and buttons running down the length of the train. There was no altering my current dress to look like this! Despite a strict returns policy, which I’d well and truly exceeded with my original dress the very kind shop manager agreed to a direct swap. I was crying, my mum was crying the manager was crying! I was so grateful to her and took the new gown home that day.

I bought a blingy belt, which I had stitched onto the dress and had it altered from a round neck to a V-neck. I finished the look with pearlembellished Converse with silk laces.

All of our flowers were white with beautiful dark green foliage.

The highlight was walking down the aisle towards Shannon and seeing her face and outfit. We’d kept our attire a surprise from each other and I couldn’t get over how stunning she looked. 36

I love crystals, so we opted for a geode wedding cake – again in emerald green.

REAL WEDDINGS

Our table plan and place names were emerald green and gold to suit our theme, which we chose as Shannon’s family are Irish.

We went for a walk with our photographer for some photos and came across a goat who followed us and kept sticking its tongue out! The pictures of this are so funny.

Shannon wore a light grey three-piece suit. As a female amongst her groomsmen, who all wore navy suits with emerald green ties, she definitely stood out and looked stunning. The bridesmaids wore full-length green dresses.

I love plants and trees, so we hired big wisteria trees for every table. The room looked like a forest as you walked in! 37

A live band entertained our guests in the evening and Shannon and I didn’t leave the dancefloor the whole night. Plus, our toastmaster, Marc, is an entertainer in himself !

When the day arrived I felt so relieved as our first date the year before was cancelled due to Covid.

We went to Cyprus on honeymoon – at the time it was one of the only green countries when it came to Covid restrictions. We spent eight nights there and laid in the sun every day. It was nice not having to worry about the wedding diet anymore!

Annicke and Chris said “I do” at The Ravenswood in September 2021

A

nnicke met Chris at the age of 17 while working part time in the same shop. They got along like a house on fire and she found herself attracted to his sense of humour. The pair have been together ever since, and as we leap forward in time to Christmas morning 2017 we find Annicke expecting their second child. Chris handed her one last present to unwrap, a super-cute photo album of their life together so far including pictures of when they first met as teenagers, their first holiday, the time their first daughter came long and scans of the next new arrival due the following April. Annicke turned to the last page, where she found a photo 40

of their little one holding up a sign that read: “Mummy, will you marry daddy?” It was such a wonderful surprise as she’d suspected nothing. The couple initially came across The Ravenswood online and thought it looked beautiful, not to mention great value with everything included in the wedding packages. But it wasn’t until they got the chance to visit that they really fell in love. “The grounds are beautiful,” Annicke explains. Join us as the bride tells us all about the couple’s wedding day, which took place on 7th September, 2021...

I wore a Stella York gown similar to the style I’d been saving pictures of. I didn’t want a huge princess dress, but rather something more elegant and subtle.

REAL WEDDINGS

Chris wore a grey suit with a pink tie. The groomsmen wore the same, but with ivory buttonholes, whereas Chris’ was pink. Our son was also dressed to match.

The bridesmaids wore silvery grey bridesmaid dresses, fitted at the top and flowy in the skirt. Chris’ sister had undergone life-threatening surgery just a few weeks before the wedding having been dangerously unwell. She had therefore told us that she wouldn’t be able to be a bridesmaid. But on the morning, she put the dress on and walked down the aisle for her brother. Our wedding favours were little white boxes containing sweets. Each one had a wooden heart attached bearing our names and wedding date

41

The Ravenswood catered our wedding breakfast. It was an unbelievable three-course meal with lamb for main. In the evening we enjoyed burgers and pulled pork baps.

Centrepieces were personalised Freixenet prosecco bottles containing fairylights and two small jars filled with gypsophila and pink roses.

Our floral arrangements all consisted of blush pink and off-white roses with gypsophila.

It was wonderful to see our children love our wedding day as much as we did. We’re so glad they were there with us.

42

The front of our three-tier white wedding cake was decorated with roses, while the back revealed our love of Marvel. Carrot cake was the main flavour with the smaller tiers being chocolate and vanilla. The grey background of our table plan, place names and table numbers ensured they had the same look as our wedding invitations.

REAL WEDDINGS

Don’t get stressed about anything on the day because you can’t change anything once you’re there, so just enjoy it. Chris and I took five minutes to step away in the evening and just watched everyone having a good time.

The reception space was decorated with wall drapes and up lighting. We had a DJ in the evening as well as an ice cream van, which was very popular. We both felt happy and relieved that it was finally happening after such a long wait and two cancellations due to Covid.

Our photographer Jo was incredible in so many ways. She had the whole day running like clockwork and was there for us every step of the way.

IS FOR ICE CREAM

Van, bike or trike: ice cream can be served at your wedding in a variety of quirky ways and will be most welcome on a hot day. Check out www.veravanillapod.co.uk

The wedding breakfast can end up being served quite late in the day by the time you’ve said “I do,” and popped off for your photographs. So, to prevent your loved ones flagging, ensure there are plenty of delicious canapés on hand for the drinks reception. A selection of five to six is a good guide and we love the idea of mini fish ‘n’ chip cones or warming bitesize pies for the winter.

O

IS FOR NO WASTAGE Food wastage at weddings is a huge issue, so find out if your venue is signed up to a scheme such as Too Good To Go (https://toogoodtogo.org) that connects its app users to with businesses that have surplus food, allowing it to be enjoyed rather than wasted. If not, you could consider donating any leftovers to the local food bank.

Q

IS FOR KNOWLEDGE The benefits of consulting a professional can never be underestimated. Whether it’s your venue’s recommended caterer or one you’ve sourced for yourself, they’ll work closely with you to create the menu of your dreams. IS FOR ORIGIN

Some venues grow their own herbs and vegetables and many caterers will support local farmers by using their meat and produce. Serving locally-sourced food at your wedding not only adds to the ambience, but also supports the community, ensures quality and offers sustainability by reducing the miles it’s had to travel.

IS FOR SEASONAL

If you’re stuck for what to serve tailoring your menu according to the season is always a lovely way to go. Think fresh flavours in the summer or warming comfort food for the winter. You could even offer Christmas pud for dessert with gingerbread favours at your festive nuptials.

IS FOR RAISE A GLASS

Make sure your guests have a glass in hand to toast your nuptials. Try some local flavour by checking out a nearby vineyard, and who doesn’t love a pimp your prosecco station? Check out https://nyetimber.com

IS FOR UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES

Whatever food option you go for, make it beautiful! Ceremony arches can be moved and utilised in your reception space – they provide a stylish backdrop for any food, dessert or cake table for example.

IS FOR TRADITIONAL

Have a think about the ambience you’re trying to create and that’ll steer you towards a dining style. Is an elegant, more traditional seated three-course dining experience your thing, or do you dream of a relaxed boho-vibe with street food or table plan-free grazing? Check out https://jacarandacatering.com which covers every angle.

IS FOR VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN One stress-free way to ensure all dietary needs are catered for is to create an inclusive menu with options to suit everyone. The days of bland and uninspiring vegetarian food are long gone. Alternatively, offer dishes with an interchangeable element should someone need a vegan or dairy-free option, that way you can still have your dream menu with just a few switches. Talk to your caterer about your requirements as they’re sure to have the inspiration and expertise to pull it off. Check out www.elizabethcaton.com

IS FOR WORLD CUISINE Spice up your life with an exciting international menu. If you love overseas travel and want the all-important meal to reflect this, talk to your caterer about serving your favourite world cuisine. Your wedding will be the talk of the town! Check out www.thaiangle.co.uk

IS X MARKS THE SPOT Don’t forget to incorporate catering options into your RSVPs. Your caterer will need to know of any food intolerances or dietary requirements ahead of time when tailoring your menu.

Y

IS YORKSHIRE PUDDING The idea of a wedding carvery fills us with joy! Everyone will be delighted by a roast dinner and you also have that added element of interaction and entertainment as designated guests carve at the table in chef’s hat and pinny.

Z

IS FOR ZOOM It’s important to meet with your wedding caterer ahead of time and work together to plan the perfect feast. If face-to-face meetings are still an issue, or distance is a factor, most will offer a virtual catch up, so there’s no excuse! 49

Demonstrating that a barn venue doesn’t necessarily need to mean rustic styling, this team of Sussex-based professionals created a shoot steeped in luxury

ysshe Court is a beautiful barn venue located on a working dairy farm just over Sussex’s northern border into Surrey. With character in droves the concept behind this shoot was to showcase this and capture its authenticity – “without going all-out rustic,” wedding planner, Lisa Evans of Taylored Weddings says. With a team of Sussex-based wedding suppliers Lisa set out to show how a venue that one might usually see decorated in lace, bunting and hessian could keep its rustic undertones, while being transformed with a lux finish. The gorgeous drape design formed the perfect backdrop to both the ceremony and wedding breakfast and the earthy, pastel colours flowed throughout into the table styling, attire and accessories. The team wanted to show how much fun a wedding day can be as well as demonstrating how you can utilise the natural surroundings and décor in all aspects of the celebrations. Lisa says, “Thankfully on shoot day the sun was shining and the animals were on form. Listening to the cows moo reminded us that we were deep in the countryside, which was fabulous. There were a few hiccups in the run up and fixing the floral installation to the ceiling was no easy task, but working with such a devoted and talented group of local suppliers meant any challenge was overcome.”

OUTDOOR WEDDINGS

Open-air “I dos” Plan your al fresco nuptials with help from the experts

O

utdoor weddings have been trending for some time now, having been helped along by pandemic restrictions and now the new law surrounding exactly where you can legally say “I do.” While tying the knot al fresco is an undoubtedly worthwhile experience in the end, it doesn’t come without its pitfalls and planning difficulties, so we turned to luxury marquee hire experts The Arabian Tent Company (https://arabiantents.com) and local wedding planner Luna and The Lane (www.lunaandthelane.co.uk) for the answers.

DID YOU KNOW? From 1st July you can say “I do” anywhere within the grounds of your approved wedding venue. Whereas under previous laws, the legal ceremony was required to take place in a licensed room or permanent structure such as a gazebo, bandstand or pavilion if outside. “Now, as long as the person conducting the ceremony has the authority to make the wedding official, you have a lot more flexibility with regards to where you tie the knot,” Katherine from The Arabian Tent Company explains. Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland QC MP says, “A couple’s wedding day is one of the most special times in their lives and this change will allow them to celebrate it the way they want. At the same time, this step will support the marriage sector by providing greater choice and helping venues to meet demand for larger ceremonies.” What’s more, a Law Commission report later this year will present further reforms for the Government to consider, including offering couples the option to host their ceremonies in a much broader range of locations. Sally at Luna and The Lane tells us, “The significance of this new legislation is that you have far more choice and don’t need to compromise on your dream. Now, marriages can be performed in orchards, next to lakes, amongst your venue’s glorious gardens – almost anywhere you can think of! Just remember though, it must be accessible for your guests and registrar.” 59

http://lighttrick.co.uk for The Arabian Tent Company

PLANNED TO PERFECTION So, now you can take advantage of the great outdoors from vows to celebrations, where do you start planning and what do you need to take into account that you otherwise wouldn’t at a traditional indoor venue? Katherine tells us more, “Our main advice is to make sure you have a wet and dry weather plan.” There can be little more beautiful and romantic than marrying in the most picturesque of garden settings, but you do need to consider how to protect yourselves and your loved ones from the elements if the British weather should try to put a dampener on proceedings, so shelter should be your number-one priority. “One practical suggestion would be to hire an opensided stretch tent providing effortlessly flowing, weather-proof cover for the ceremony,” Katherine says. It does indeed pay to be prepared, particularly if the forecast is unsettled. “Make the call early, especially if you need to move furniture,” is Sally’s advice. Keeping your nearest and dearest comfortable whatever the day throws at you is an important part of your preparations, think about providing blankets for a chilly evening and umbrellas just in case. As Brits, it’s our default setting to worry about the rain, but what if it’s hot? Sally says, “Make sure there’s adequate shade for your guests during the reception, and if they’re in the sun during the ceremony, ensure you have plenty of accessible water. Fans are also a great idea for cooling down.” You could even source some cheap sunglasses for guests to grab so they don’t miss a second of your ceremony through squinting into the sun. To help loved ones take care of their own wellbeing, it’s important to make it clear in your invitations that your big-day will be al fresco. That way, they can avoid any faux pas such as stiletto heels and will know to pack the sun cream. One of the most exciting elements of any wedding is the food and outdoor nuptials offer a naturally more informal vibe with a myriad of fun options. Instead of a traditional sit-down threecourse meal for example, you might want to look into having a buffet or barbecue without a table plan, where guests can grab their plates and pull up a seat in whatever idyllic spot they find nearby with the flexibility and space to mingle. Or for a little more organisation, simply allocate them a table, but offer them to choice of seat. Another super-fun idea is to hire food trucks serving delicious street food or a wood-fired pizza caterer to create a festival atmosphere. Sally says, “If you opt for this type of wedding, make sure you hire a generator able to provide enough power for your vendors. Have a think as well about how your food will be served and make sure the location is practical for your caterers. Finally, find out whether your venue offers access to toilets, or will you need to rent some? ” 60

Lighting is not only a crucial practical consideration when you’re planning an open-air reception, but also offers some gorgeous styling options. As Katherine says, “Lighting really sets the atmosphere for the day. At Arabian Tents, we’ve invested in offering solar-powered lighting for events. Not only do they reduce energy consumption, we can now install lights wherever needed. Imagine a cascade of fairylights draped from a tree or a starburst hanging down from the branches. These are high quality, eco-efficient lights that retain their power long into the night.” If you’ve opted for an open-air wedding, chances are it’s because you adore the great outdoors and being among stunning countryside surroundings. So, why not use the setting to inspire your styling? Sally says, “Use the natural environment to set the vibe and think about your focal points.”

CHECK OUT THESE STYLING IDEAS... ❤ Help the bees by giving guests packets of sees as wedding favours. ❤ Provide plenty of stylish signage to help the flow from A to B particularly if you’re at a sprawling outdoor venue. ❤ Barrels and hay bales fit beautifully with the outdoor theme and offer comfy seating or a place to pop your drink down. ❤ Chic, natural and earthy colour palettes are totally on trend this year – think hues of green, rust and white. But if your personalities shout out for something more colourful a bright and bold rainbow scheme would work equally well. ❤ You two are the perfect match, but your styling elements don’t have to be! Mismatched or upcycled furniture and tableware bring an oh-so cool and relaxed vintage vibe. ❤ Keep guests of all ages entertained with lawn games. ❤ Try individual jam jars or coloured glass vases filled with wild flowers dotted along the centre of banquet tables rather than large structured arrangements. ❤ Embrace the informal rustic vibe with dreamcatchers, macrame, streamers and bunting. ❤ A floral moon gate or arch will look great as a backdrop to your vows and can be repositioned later as a grand entrance to your marquee or a selfie background. ❤ “This year we’ve already seen an increase in couples asking to marry under their marquee of choice, decorating it however they desire to make it extra special. Set up a ceremony feature inside that can be evolved as day goes into night.” – Katherine, The Arabian Tent Co. 61

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

WHERE TO BEGIN?

We’re just starting out on our big-day journey and neither of us have a clue what we should look for when booking a venue. Can you help? There’s so much choice when it comes to choosing a wedding venue, but there are several questions you can answer to assist in narrowing down your choices. Firstly, what’s your budget? Secondly, what’s your vision of your special day? Is it traditional, such as a heritage hotel or modern and unique like the British Airways i360 viewing pod? Perhaps it’s a natural setting, such as a barn or garden.

Next, think about how many guests you’ll invite. This will help you to decide what size the space needs to be. Wedding venues will be able to advise you how many people they can accommodate and offer ideas for the best layout and realistically how easy it is to transform it to suit your vision. Finally, what time of year do you wish to marry? Indoor venues will suit you best for a winter wedding, but for spring or summer nuptials somewhere that has a large outdoor area with indoor rooms would be worth a look. For example, BA i360 has large beachfront terraces combined with indoor rooms boasting sea views giving the best of both. Laura Pauley, https://britishairwaysi360.com

WITH A BANG

We want a festival/club vibe to our evening celebrations. What can we add to make it fun and memorable? Using special effects at weddings can truly make your big day unique, adding moments that you and your guests will remember forever. For example, our effects range from traditional outdoor firework displays to simple ice fountains for your wedding cake and just about anything else you can think of in between. To bring a club vibe to the dancefloor, why not use a confetti cannon, which can be set to go off just as you reach the end of your first dance for that real wow factor? You could even go for an all-out gig atmosphere with your very own pyro FX! Or how about a smoke or bubble machine for a touch of romance when the DJ starts playing the slow songs? As the leading UK supplier of professional special effects and pyrotechnics to the theatre, entertainment and live events industries, we’ve seen that as the industry has grown more and more clients are wanting effects for their weddings. We’re equally happy to work with you to create your wedding-day extravaganza as we are with A-list artists, TV channels and theatre companies. Ashling Barclay, www.sfxsupplies.co.uk 63 

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

We’ve opted for a wedding palette of bright summer colours and want to incorporate them into our stationery. Do you have any suggestions? Summer flowers are always a lovely way to incorporate bright colours into your wedding stationery and can also link in nicely with your chosen bouquet or floral arrangements. I have many designs that would work perfectly for this particular theme or I can create bespoke stationery by looking at your chosen palette and matching it accordingly. On-the-day welcome signage will bring a pop of colour and can continue the invitation theme right through to the wedding itself. This feels even more inviting for guests, as the familiar colours and embellishments add a more personal feel. You can even include plenty of bright colours on your table plan allowing it to stand out. Having the same hues on your table numbers and name cards will also help loved ones find their seats easily, as well as adding another splash of summer to your reception. The possibilities are endless! Stacie Gould, www.rosegouldprinting.co.uk

ON TREND

What’s hot in the world of weddings this year? With 2022 being the biggest wedding season on record, with an estimated two-and-a-half million weddings set to take place, according to The Wedding Report, here’s all you need to know about the current trends... The Pantone colour for 2022 is a shade of blue with violet undertones called Very Peri. When using a bold hue such as this in your wedding palette just add hints of it and pair it with other similar tones. Be sure to keep neutral undertones to your floral palettes, such as white, to ensure they complement the main colour. Anemones are one of the most popular flowers requested this season, with ranunculas, lisianthus and garden roses close behind, all of which can be sourced from local flower farms. We’re also seeing filler flowers becoming popular with snapdragons, Queen Anne’s lace and wax flowers. Short hemlines are doing the rounds again, with 2022 expecting to see a large increase in these wedding dress designs. The many city-based nuptials taking place seem to be the reason behind their popularity as a little white dress is perfectly suited for a luxury town hall wedding. Big puff sleeves are also popular with brides opting for this modern style. With weekend dates being booked up, weekday weddings have seen a surge in popularity. Couples are desperate to stop delaying their plans any further and are opting for midweek celebrations to ensure they can go ahead this year. Couples are always looking for new ways to stand out and unusual reception table layouts are being requested to make things more modern. Many planners and stylists created some unique floorplans to keep guests socially distanced during last year’s restrictions and as a result we’re seeing S-shaped tables becoming a popular choice, as well as square and U-shaped layouts. PAINT THE TOWN

Have you heard of a paint party, where an artist guides you through your chosen painting step by step? It’s a great idea for a hen party activity. The sessions are fun and informal and you can sip on a cocktail, a glass of prosecco or if you prefer, a cup of tea as you paint. The activity is open to everyone of any age, so is suitable for all hens. You can bring your mum, your aunt, your nan and your bestie. It’s proven that getting creative releases endorphins and a shared activity brings everyone together to chat and have a giggle. Here at The Paint Club Studio, we provide you with a professional artist who will transform your chosen venue into a mini art studio and lead you through a two hour session step by step. Choose your painting and let us create a bespoke event for you. We can set up anywhere that has tables and chairs, be it a bar, field or party house. We provide all the painting equipment, including aprons and table covers. Best of all, you get to keep your painting as a memento of your hen party. Alice Munro-Hainsworth, www.thepaintclub.co.uk 64

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 67

Q&A

Look and feel your big day best with help from the professionals

FINDING THE RIGHT SUPPORT

Silly as it may sound, the thing I’m most worried about when it comes to my wedding-day look is my underwear. It needs to improve the look of my dress, be comfortable and look pretty all at the same time. It’s a challenge. Can you offer any advice? We turned to the founder of Sussex-based underwear brand Liberty & Love (www.libertyandlove.uk), Beth Kates, for the answers: “Whenever I’m doing bridal fittings the first thing I consider is the style of the dress. For example, with a halter-neck dress, you need a halter-neck bra. “The next thing to think about is which parts of your body you want to accentuate. Do you want to show off your curves or minimise them? Do you want to have something with support? The bra you choose will also very much depend on whether you want uplift or to enhance your cleavage. All of us have parts of our body we’re happy with and others we’re not. If you have a bit of a tummy for example, you might opt for a corset because they do up in a way that will work undereath most dresses. It’s about looking at the gown and how long you’ll have it on. “Something also worth bearing in mind is the colour you’ll be wearing. If you have an ivory gown, you’ll want ivory underwear underneath as white will show through, even with fabric like duchess satin or silk. So, try to colour match the underwear to the wedding dress. “It’s always best to go to somebody who knows what they’re doing – a specialist who can fit underwear, as they’ll be able to look at you and what you want to achieve, fitting the underwear to that dress. Ideally, go somewhere with a private studio, so you can actually take the gown with you and try it on with the underwear. A specialist should also be able to do alterations to make their pieces accommodate certain silhouettes. “There are so many different options from halter neck, strapless, full corset and straps, to shapewear, waist cinchers or simply pretty brief and suspender sets. So, it really does depend on your dress and the look you want to achieve.” 84

Q&A

UP, UP AND AWAY

I need some ideas for a bridal hairstyle that can be worn up for my elegant late-summer wedding – what can you suggest? Beckie Packham, Beckie’s Bridal Hair (www.beckiesbridalhair.co.uk), shares some words of wisdom: “For a late summer wedding, I’d always suggest a loose up do. At this time of year, we always run the risk of those hot and sticky evenings! When your hair is down and you’re hot, it can make your locks limp, flat and lifeless. Opting for a loose up do gives you the control and elegance that a hair up style offers, while maintaining a soft and romantic bridal look. “This type of style can also be tailored to suit your dress and neckline with ease and even personalised with braids or twists. The tightness of the hair style can also be altered to suit your face shape, personal taste and vibe of your wedding.”

TESTING, TESTING...

What should I expect from my wedding make-up trial? Is there anything I need to prepare or bring? Becky Flynn, Makeup by Becky Flynn (www.makeupbybeckyflynn.com), gives us the benefit of her experience: “Your trial is the perfect chance for you and your make-up artist to get to know each other and discuss your wedding day look in detail. Save inspiration photos of looks you love, as well as of yourself wearing make-up so your artist can get an idea of what you’re used to. It’s also helpful to have pictures of your dress, hairstyle, venue, flowers etc so your MUA can build a vision of your entire wedding day. “If you’re planning on having any treatments such as a spray tan or lash extensions, try to have these done for your trial too, as it’s a good way to see it with your make-up and get a feel for it all together. Wear a top of a similar colour to your wedding dress – it’s surprising how much of a difference this can make to the finished look. “Finally, just make sure you have fun and are honest with your make-up artist. If there’s something you don’t love, it can be changed so make sure you communicate and you leave with a look you absolutely adore.”

HIT THE HEIGHTS

I love the big voluminous up dos I’ve seen on Pinterest, but although my hair is long, it’s fine, so I worry this dream is out of my reach. What can you suggest? Alison J. Smith, Bridal Beauty (www.bridalbeauty.co.uk), shares her top tips: “Soft, textured, voluminous up-dos are the dream of many brides and should be achievable if the hair is prepped correctly with the help of a few key products. I like to start with freshly washed hair so I can blow dry with a texture and thickening spray. I then use a mini crimper to crimp the roots and then brush through – already the hair will have more volume. Depending on the style, I may use a curling wand to wave through before putting the hair up. Sometimes, I use clip-in extensions to add more volume and hair pads are great to wrap the hair over when creating voluminous buns. I love to use texture powder on the roots, with backcombing and texture spray, which all helps to support it. The mid-lengths and ends can then be twisted, braided, smoothed, curled, rolled or whatever is required to achieve your dream style before spritzing into place. With the correct scaffolding your fine hair really shouldn’t stop you having a beautiful big up do!” 85

However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Revolutionary U.S. skincare brand goodhabit has recently launched in the UK with a range of products that have effective, naturederived ingredients at their core. Each is created with the same goal of achieving radiant, glowing, healthy skin every day. The best news is you’ll never find microbeads, nonoparticles, parabens or phthalates in goodhabit’s formulas or any harmful ingredients at all for that matter. I love Clean Scene Micellar Gel. A rinse-free gel it whisks away both waterproof and long-wearing formulas as well as dirt, excess oil and impurities without stripping your skin of essential moisture. Gentle enough to use on your entire face, even eyes and lips, it’s also powerful enough to deliver a clean finish in a single swipe. £24, www.goodhabitskin.com 89

ANTARCTICA AND RWANDA

Wilderness Safaris and White Desert have come together to design an adventure-packed itinerary featuring the best of Africa and Antarctica. Set to take place in January 2023, the companies’ shared guests will enjoy the most awe-inspiring experiences, hand-crafted to highlight the best of Wilderness Safaris and White Desert’s offerings. Ice & Fire is a 20-day journey where couples will discover the highlights of Cape Town, Antarctica, and Rwanda. During their stay, tourists will have exclusive access to observe over 14 000 breeding pairs of penguins and their weeks-old chicks. Couples will then head to Cape Town for three nights to regroup and relax. SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

Escape to

the forest

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

E

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?

Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! There is

a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there!
