Tilgate Park Weddings A VENUE LIKE NO OTHER

MAZE • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS

Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN

Be amongst be the first to this married in ing award-winn e u n ve

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines all adorned with thousands of fairy lights. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats.

EVENTS ARENA

The perfect location to host a large marquee for your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Measuring more than 1,000 square metres, there’s ample room for extra entertainment like a band or giant garden games and it is conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around every twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Welcome back! C

an you believe we’re now into summer already? Sure, I’m looking forward to longer days, sunny conditions and barbecues with friends, but above all I’m excited about the triumphant return of weddings. And boy, have you all waited long enough! I can’t wait to see how your plans come to life and can see big days being even more celebratory than they previously were, if that’s even possible. We’ve all developed a deeper appreciation for the finer things in life over the past 18 months, love being chief among them, and to see it taking centre stage once more is something I’m thrilled about. So, as soon as Boris gives the green light, grab your loved ones, hug them as tight as possible and party like it’s 1999! And, when you’ve done that, don’t forget to head over to www.your-sussex.wedding/getinvolved-real-wedding and tell us all about it, so we can spread the joy. If there’s one thing I do know, it’s that as giddy as you are at the prospect of finally going ahead with your well-deserved dream day, your suppliers will be every bit as cock-a-hoop to be getting back to what they love. They can’t hide their lights under a bushel for long, so as usual; this issue is about showcasing what they do best. I’ve rounded up my highlights for you across these two pages, so dive in to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Our fashion editor Claire has rounded up some incredible modern ballgown designs for you this issue, including this simple and structured jaw-dropper. Turn to page 71 for more.

BOOK WITH CONFIDENCE

CEREMONY SAVING

With many venues catching up on postponed weddings from the past year and fielding unprecedented demand for new dates, there could be a shortage of availability 2021 and beyond. Cresta Jerrard from Southdowns Manor in Petersfield says, “Our suggestion is to secure your date as soon as possible.” Happily, you’re able to book with total confidence at Southdowns Manor thanks to the hard work the team have put into developing their new Covid policies. “In the increasingly unlikely event of restrictions preventing your chosen date from proceeding, we’ll arrange a future alternative date for you or offer a full refund of sums paid if preferred,” Cresta continues. What’s more, to assist its couples the venue also offers peace of mind via its Job Loss Protection Scheme and various payment plans, which can offer valuable rewards and a spread in the cost of your wedding over a period to suit you. To find out more, head over to www.southdownsmanor.co.uk

Set on a working farm in the West Sussex countryside, Southend Barn has been lovingly restored with rustic charm and romantic touches. There’s ample outdoor space here with a picturesque courtyard that lies at the heart of the venue, with its luscious lawn and Cornish-slate patio – ideal for photographs and mingling over drinks and canapés. Its sumptuous sofas, firepit, lanterns and baskets of blankets make this a popular place to congregate for guests of all ages. There’s also the Milking Parlour, which can be used either as the groom’s quarters or for the bride and her bride tribe to get ready pre-ceremony. Newlyweds can also use it for a little privacy throughout the day and you’re welcome to stay the night if you wish.

THE “I DOS”

❤ The Dairy Barn (120 guests) is licensed for ceremonies. With a wonderful sweeping 22-metre aisle, exposed wooden beams and benches made of sweet chestnut it can also be utilised after the “I dos” for a drinks reception or as an entertainment room for children. ❤ The Secret Garden (100 guests) is a hidden gem that features a 50foot aisle set amidst peaceful scenery. Taking inspiration from the Dutch term gezellig, the garden is a celebration of togetherness, comfort and enjoyment.

TIME TO CELEBRATE ❤ The Threshing Barn (120 dining, 200 evening reception guests) is a 200-year-old structure that radiates rustic charm with authentic wood beams and wrought iron chandeliers. With plenty of space for dancing and entertaining, it still benefits from an intimate and relaxed feel, plus the vast windows lining both sides of the building allow guests to enjoy the surrounding gardens and sunsets over the South Downs.

REAL WEDDINGS

G

emma and James spent their first date in Brighton, where a flight on the i360 was followed by a walk along the seafront, rides on the pier and a meander into Hove for dinner. Gemma says, “It was the longest first date! We spent eight hours chatting, but conversation between us was easy.” James proposed on a beach in Cape Verde. “He’d been joking about giving me a shell as a ring for days, so when he told me he had something to give me as we walked along the beach I just kept going. But he got down on one knee and proposed with an actual ring,” Gemma tells us. While she was surprised, she did have a sneaking suspicion that the allimportant question was imminent as a week beforehand her dad let it slip that he and James had met for a coffee. The couple looked at a variety of venues before deciding on The Ravenswood. “We wanted somewhere that would be exclusively ours with a bar and on-site accommodation,” the bride explains. Most important was their dream of an al fresco ceremony and The Ravenswood offered the ideal spot, alongside an indoor bad-weather alternative that the couple loved equally. “We’d have been happy with either space, but fortunately the weather was kind to us,” Gemma comments. Read on to discover more about the big day as we get the lowdown from the bride…

SETTING THE SCENE Keen to add some personal touches to the day Gemma made the favours and much of the stationery herself. The ladies were gifted candles decorated with glittery ribbon and the men with little sweet-filled tankards. These doubled up as place names since each favour was individually labelled. Plus, elegantly echoed in all stationery throughout the day was the J&G logo the couple had designed together. The table plan was made from a mirror and was entitled Be Our Guest as a nod to the first dance song Tale As Old As Time, also from Beauty And The Beast. The string quartet played the former as the newlyweds entered the wedding breakfast reception. To fit the romantic theme, centrepieces were candelabras draped in flowers including amnesia roses to match the bridal bouquet. The blooms also matched the arrangements placed either side of the Little Castle outdoor ceremony space. Gemma says, “Our flowers were stunningly chic with beautiful, soft pastels and vintage lilacs paired with silver-toned greenery. They perfectly matched the bridesmaid dresses as well as the boys’ cravats and chair sashes.” They also had love heart glass bottles containing fairylights dotted around the venue for an added air of romance. The big-day bake was a four-tier showstopper with a salted caramel base, followed by a lemon drizzle layer, gluten-free chocolate orange ganache, and a fruit cake. A cascade of beautiful edible roses flowed down its side in a light purple, lavender and ivory paired with mink to tie it in with the floral arrangements and stationery. The newlyweds and their guests all sat down to a traditional three-course wedding breakfast with a choice of goat cheese or salmon to start, lamb or roasted butternut squash for main, and a trio of desserts to finish. In the evening everyone enjoyed the traditional buffet spread.

LOOKING THE PART Gemma wore Harrogate from the Blue by Enzoani collection. From her very first bridal boutique appointment she realised a fitted style was best suited to her body shape. “I chose this dress 31

REAL WEDDINGS as it had a little something extra that the others didn’t. I also wore a 30-inch plain veil since the dress was so detailed,” she explains. James looked dapper in a blue tail suit with a silver waistcoat and cravat to complement the sparkles on his bride’s dress and accessories. His groomsmen wore suits and waistcoats to match the groom’s with lilac/mink cravats to match the bridesmaid dresses. Speaking of the bride tribe, they looked beautiful in long dusty lilac gowns, which tied in with the flowers and venue decorations. They also wore silver shoes and accessories to reflect the colour palette of the day.

TIME TO CELEBRATE As guests arrived Just Strings quartet were there to entertain them as well as throughout the drinks reception. “They were great and really set off the classic, romantic ambience we were aiming for,” Gemma recalls. Garden games were set out on the lawn, including stilts, hoopla, giant Jenga, bowls and croquet. There was also a selfie pod in the evening, which everyone enjoyed immensely and doubled up as a guest book for the happy couple to treasure. One highlight of the celebrations was the confetti canon going off during the first dance and making spectators jump, at which point James dramatically picked up his bride and spun her around – the stuff of dreams for their photographer. The night perfectly drew to a close with sparklers in the secret garden.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “The day was magical,” Gemma remembers. “We couldn’t believe it had finally arrived and just wanted time to take everything in,” she continues. Seeing friends and family turn around as the bride set off down the aisle on her dad’s arm, as the groom waited at the end was a real highlight for the pair. “I particularly love looking back on this part of our video,” Gemma tells us. The couple’s 18-month-old son had a whale of a time playing with his bubble cart that James put together for him. He certainly loved all the attention he was getting on mum and dad’s special day!

IN THE NAME Laura-May and Simon tied the knot at All Saints’ Church, Lindfield, before heading over to Alexander House for an intimate celebration with nearest and dearest Images courtesy of NDavies Photography

S

imon and Laura-May met online having been attracted to each other’s funny dating profiles. On their fourth anniversary as a couple, Simon proposed on one knee at Alexander House, surrounded by the petals from 300 roses, which still came as a huge surprise to Laura-May even though she’d been asking for a year! So, when it came time to look at venues the hotel where Laura-May had said “yes” seemed like the natural choice. It was a place they

REAL WEDDINGS

both loved since many a family event had been celebrated there. The date was set for May 2021, but when news of the pandemic hit in March 2020, the couple opted to bring the big day forward to 17th December 2020 in favour of a more intimate celebration. “I felt incredibly excited and just wanted to get married faster,” Laura-May tells us. Here, the bride gives us the lowdown on this very special day… 37 37

I travelled to the venue in a white wedding London taxi as a nod to the fact that we’d recently moved to Sussex from London.

Go with the flow and remember why you’re doing this – LOVE! It was great to be able to live stream the day to my nana who is bed bound. We now share a wedding anniversary with her and my grandad.

I wore a bespoke Suzanne Neville dress with a handstitched floor-length veil adorned with pearls, along with a pearl hair piece. 38

REAL WEDDINGS

Si was dressed in a bespoke Gresham Blake three-piece suit, while his best man wore a bespoke waistcoat, also from Gresham Blake.

Our wedding favours were small gift bags each containing a silk pashmina, personalised bottle opener, mini champagne or spirit customised according to taste, custom Loveheart sweets, my favourite candle (Lily Flame) and chocolates from Hove-based chocolatier Audrey’s

I created the place names on Papier and customised them by adding pearls and we embellished our reception space with romantic fairylights and tons of flowers. The floral centrepieces featured white roses, hydrangeas and winter peonies.

Our big-day bake was lemon chiffon decorated with a curly wurly design. 39

Our wedding breakfast, an incredible bespoke five-course menu, was catered by Alexander House. Magician Alexander James entertained us after dinner. He was a real hit with our guests as he was so funny, it was almost a comedy show as well. We also enjoyed the free-flowing cocktails and champagne.

Our day was so personal and intimate. We were able to spend time speaking to each one of our guests, really enjoying their company. It felt like a relaxed dinner with friends and family – the best. Once restrictions are lifted, we plan to host a big party in the garden with everyone we know.

My best advice would be to keep the end goal in mind – don’t get carried away planning a wedding that doesn’t fit for you and your partner just because it’s what’s expected of you. Make it your day and enjoy every minute of it because it goes so fast.

REAL WEDDINGS

You’re one in a million Kerry and Matt said “I do” at The Ravenswood in December 2020 Images courtesy of John Scofield Photography

M

att proposed to Kerry in the summer of 2019 at Cottesmore Golf and Country Club. One of the little chalets had been arranged, or so Kerry thought, for his family to stay in while visiting for the weekend. But when she arrived to find the room decorated with rose petals, balloons and flowers, she realised a surprise was afoot! Both sets of families eagerly awaited the newly engaged couple to emerge so they could all celebrate together. “I was lost for words when it happened,” Kerry tells us. The couple looked at many venues across the county when planning began in earnest, but had been unable to find quite what they were looking for until they found The Ravenswood. Kerry explains, “The turreted exterior is beautiful and the grounds are astonishing with the old boat house and three lakes. I really wanted somewhere that offered the opportunity to hold our ceremony in the open air, so the Little Castle truly ticked my box of being a princess for the day. Inside, the venue had everything to offer and the staff were so welcoming and helpful, nothing was too much hassle.” With the venue booked for 1st December 2020 and the guest list finally

whittled down to 60 the couple were excited for their big day. However, Covid had different ideas. “It was really difficult deciding who to invite when we discovered our guest list would have to be halved, but when we were later informed we had to halve it again to just 15 that was the real challenge. We still wanted to get married though, that was the most important thing for us. So, we decided to go ahead joined by our closest family and friends followed later by a fantastic celebration with all of our loved ones once restrictions have been completely lifted. This is already being referred to as ‘Wedding 2.0’!” Luckily, they’d chosen to move the wedding back slightly by two weeks to 15th December, which meant they were clear of the second lockdown and able to go ahead. Thank goodness for technology too as many of their original guests were able to join them virtually via the live stream, and the couple were delighted to receive lots of lovely video messages, which they played with the speeches in the evening. So, without any further ado join us as Kerry tells us all about their intimate wedding day… 43

“Planning a wedding during a pandemic is no piece of cake!”

For me as a bride waking up on wedding morning felt like Christmas Day when I was a little girl! The butterflies were unreal, but I knew I was marrying the most amazing man and that I couldn’t be luckier. Matt looked so handsome as I walked towards him and the sun was shining so brightly. The whole day we were surrounded by people who truly love and care for us and my smile was ear to ear. Even when I tried to stop I couldn’t!

I knew this dress, Katherine, was the one from the moment I put it on. One of my bridesmaids recommended it, and although it wasn’t a style I’d ever considered myself wearing I felt so beautiful in it. The alterations were done by a fantastic seamstress in Horsham, It’s Sew Vintage.

My bridesmaids wore TFNC’s Jeanny Mulberry Maxi Dresses with blush-coloured shawls. They all finished the look with a different pair of gold shoes to suit their individual style.

44

Matt wore a tailor-made suit in navy paired with brown shoes. He stood out by wearing a mulberry bow tie instead of the neck ties worn by the groomsmen. He also had a few sparkles in his buttonhole to complement by bouquet.

REAL WEDDINGS

Our favours were jars of homemade honey labelled ‘sweet as honey’ along with our names and wedding date.

Each centrepiece featured a candle in a goldfish bowl surrounded by a wreath of green, mulberry, navy and light pink flowers. Our three-tier cake was decorated with the same flowers as our bouquets, along with tiny golden Mickey Mouse heads. The top layer was a gluten- and diaryfree carrot cake with caramel buttercream, with the rest being red velvet and vanilla buttercream.

We opted for silk flowers, which included a mixture of colours from our wedding palette. My bridal bouquet had small pink sparkles and incorporated my something blue gift.

Place names were laser cut form wood in Disney’s font and covered in glitter. The table numbers were made in a similar style.

We decorated the reception space with a Mr and Mrs Scott LED sign, ceiling lanterns in colours from our palette and uplighters for the curtains.

45

“If marrying each other is what you really want then as long as you’re both there, you have all you need for a successful and memorable day.”

Our first dance was particularly memorable as we’d choreographed it ourselves and had been rehearsing it for months.

My mum was my maid-of-honour and listened to all my worries, wobbles and insecurities. She made sure I got everything done and was the gift that kept on giving. I’m eternally grateful for everything she did for us.

Since we weren’t able to hit the dancefloor together, we played Mr & Mrs and Boogie Bingo. Guests also had general knowledge quiz questions on their tables, which they all enjoyed.

Our wedding coordinator Katie was amazing throughout. Even in the midst of a pandemic she made sure the day ran smoothly and for that period of time it felt like life was normal. No question was too silly and no favour too big, she understood all my dilemmas and made us feel at ease.

Our best advice would simply be to talk to each other, air your fears and concerns. Write a list of things you need to conquer and try to identify areas that your bridal party can help with. Think about alternative ways to get your guests involved, a live stream for example.

t’s no wonder that the showstopping gown featured in this shoot served as the guiding light behind it. Complete with glorious sparkle it’s bound to make jaws drop. Not wanting to detract too much from it or indeed from the beauty of the surroundings at Peeling Manor Barns, shoot coordinators Jane of JR Makeup Artistry and Jennifer of Divine Photography Eastbourne, along with their team of Sussex-based suppliers, utilised an abundance of lush florals for a regal yet rustic feel. This was all brought together beautifully with a natural palette of green, brown and white boosted by a touch of glamour in a nod to that dress. 53

N

othing brings people together quite like a hearty meal. Throughout the ages the idea of drinking and dining together as a shared experience has been the key to shaping our culture – from the great Tudor banquets to the Edwardian elegance of dressing for dinner. Nowadays, you only have to turn on the television to be bombarded with celebrity chefs, food-related competitions and even entire channels devoted to the creation of delicious dishes. Let’s face it: we British love our food. It’s probably already occurred to you then, that by the time you’ve said “I do” and been pronounced newlyweds, your guests’ minds will already be turning to the wedding breakfast. This celebratory feast lies at the heart of the revelries, but it doesn’t end, or even begin there. Your wedding day, whilst undeniably joyous, will be a long one and adrenaline will only get you so far. Be sure to keep you and your loved ones fuelled and dancefloor-ready by making sure there are grazing opportunities aplenty. With the cuisine on point your day will be the hot topic of conversation among your nearest and dearest for months and years to come. So, with trends ever on the move, possibly more in the last year or so than at any other time, we decided it was time to catch up with Sussex’s talented crop of wedding food aficionados to get the inside track.

While we all hold traumatic memories of the boring, mass-catering blandness of yesteryear, it’s time to put that all behind us. Wedding menus in the 2020s are creative, delicious, top-quality, personality driven, and even theme fitting. Whether your preference is for a seated traditional meal or for the informality of festival-style dining, you’ll find the priority for our experts is the quality of produce. Susan Quinn of Quinn Events says, “The demand for locally-sourced organic food continues to increase as couples are becoming more and more aware of the social and environmental impact of their celebrations. They’re conscious of the source of their wedding fare and how it’s all been produced. The industry also finds itself challenged to accommodate the varied dietary needs of wedding guests as people become more aware of their food choices and the impact on their overall health, wellbeing and the environment.” Jacquie Keeley of Hailsham-based Fab Food For You agrees: “Everything I use in my catering is fresh and locally“A delicious plant-based starter of sourced produce from suppliers I pan-fried chick pea pitta bread toped know and trust, such as the meat for my succulently cooked hog roasts and with balsamic caramelised onions, British barbecues – a fabulous feature of vegan feta cheese, sautéed mushrooms outdoor festival-style weddings. I also have a converted horse box that can and marinaded sun-dried and heritage serve food from biodegradable plates tomatoes drizzled with lemon juice and cutlery.” rapseed oil and black pepper is a great If planning a sustainable celebration is top of your to do list, you’ll also example of healthy, locally-sourced food.” want to turn your attention to the drinks – Susan Quinn, Quinn Events you serve. Marie Ashton, owner of Sloe Drinks Co Mobile Bar Service says, “Buying local has become more important since the start of the pandemic, and in doing so you’ll find a better quality product paired with a more enjoyable experience – it’s so much nicer to know the maker of your beer, wine or gin. Why not spend an afternoon together visiting them? We support local gin producers in Sussex and Kent, as well as serving craft beers, local sparkling wines and cocktails.” With flexible and al fresco venues rising in popularity, and festivals set to open again for the first time since 2019, Jacquie has been inspired to incorporate the festival spirit into her celebration catering.

CATERING

“Seek out your local small brewery, vineyard or gin distillery. Enjoy a visit to a local tap room such as Three Legs Brewery in Brede, East Sussex or a day out at a local vineyard such as Tinkerage Wine.” – Marie Ashton, Sloe Drinks Co Mobile Bar Service She explains, “Think marquees with clear roofs and sides that open to let the air in; fire bowls and pits with festoon lighting for those lengthening evenings; pallet tables and straw bales for outdoor seating with rustic furniture adorning indoor spaces, which all together embrace the local countryside as an integral part of the venues. I love to complement the rustic outdoor vibe with wooden boards serving platters of canapés, salads, meats, homemade quiches, tarts and pies all adorned with edible flowers.” Not only can you link your wedding-day dining experience to the overall theme of the day, but Susan finds she is receiving a growing number of requests to link in the colour palette too. She tells us, “Desserts offer a great opportunity to do this. For example, one interesting twist on a pink theme is a deconstructed cheesecake of organic mascarpone cheese, organic double cream, shortbread crumb base, highlighted with accents of pinks and reds with fresh and freeze-dried strawberries, dusky pink macarons, homemade fudge and a yummy caramel sauce.” So, having been spoiled rotten with mouthwatering dining options, what equally delicious delights will your guests be drinking in 2021 and 22? Marie tells us, “Non-alcoholic spirits are a growing trend, ranging from zero-alcohol gins to malt spirits, wines and beers. So why not enjoy a guilt-free G&T or cocktail? Warner Edwards are making two botanic garden spirits in juniper double dry and pink berry, while Caleno are making a dark and spicy zero per cent spirit as well as a light citrus version. Even Gordon’s are joining the alcohol-free revolution. Definitely something to investigate.” Another trend for this summer we’re told will be vermouth. Marie explains, “Lower in alcohol than a spirit these fortified wines offer a selection of flavours from deep fruity red to light and dry, or rosé. Flavoured with herbs and botanicals, this tipple can be enjoyed over ice, with tonic or added to a cocktail. Most Brits know it as Martini although other variants are available from Lillet to Punt e Mes, and a locally produced one by In the Loop Drinks of Sussex.”

Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

L

ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup

plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and overbudgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.

THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers and budget, we began the exciting part – looking 64

at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

Melissa. x

BRIDE’S DIARY

Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.

Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.

Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.

We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.

Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!

This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 65

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Our experts offer some stellar wedmin advice

TOGETHER AGAIN

Given the restrictions of the last year, our friends and family will be keen to catch up at our wedding. How can we create a chill out area to give them space away from the dancefloor to chat? www.imogenevephotography.co.uk

It’s always nice to have a place for your guests to chill away from the dancefloor. If your venue has a separate ceremony room why not utilise this space again by adding a sofa and props to create a quiet area? This is also great as you’re reusing items that you’ve used during the day. Equally by adding something as simple as a neon sign it creates a welcoming and dedicated space to chill. Sara Ellis | To Have and To Hire Events www.tohaveandtohireweddings.com

LOVE AND UNITY

How can we include close friends and family members in our ceremony?

There are many ways to include your friends and family such as having them enter with the bridal party, deliver a reading or poem, or even asking the talented amongst them to provide a musical element. For me, having them join in as part of a unity ceremony is the perfect way to bring families together and welcome each part of the couple into the fold of the other. You also have the option to include symbolic actions such as pouring different coloured sand representing the family members from individual bottles into one jar bringing everyone together as one. This is a great visual element and a simple way to include your nearest and dearest. Having friends light a unity candle and pass around the flame or take it in turns to light smaller individual candles also includes them in the service. It’s a lovely way to show the close connection between everyone present and part of your special day. Stefan Field | Ceremonies by Stefan www.ceremoniesbystefan.com 67 

OPEN-AIR AMBIENCE

We’d like to celebrate the beauty of the county with an outdoor wedding. What do we need to consider to ensure our day has the best atmosphere?

www.annamariestepney.co.uk

Outdoor weddings are wonderful, whether you’re having a largescale marquee celebration or, as a lot of couples are opting for now, a simple garden event surrounded by nearest and dearest. Whatever you’re planning, you need to consider both the atmosphere and design of the day to ensure your guests feel comfortable and entertained. I always think about the flow of the event first and foremost. There will be times when you want your guests to feel relaxed, able to connect and chat, and then others when they need to be entertained and having fun. Your overall design as well as props and furniture can really aid in achieving this. Having a chilled out and neutral colour palette can lend an air of romance with a serene atmosphere. Your décor can reflect your surroundings, so perhaps keep it light and add elements of the setting in the form of natural materials, features and florals. Alternatively, create an energised party atmosphere with colourful furniture and props with a wow factor that provide a talking point for guests.

We’re about to start looking for venues. What questions do we need to ask before we book? Planning a wedding is fun and exciting, but there are many things to consider in the run up to the big day. We’d suggest you ask as many questions as possible to make sure you find the perfect venue for you. If you include the following in your checklist you won’t go far wrong! ❤ Is the venue exclusive use? ❤ What are the access times? ❤ Where are you licensed for the ceremony? (You may want to get married outside for example. We’ve seen an upsurge in interest in our beautiful Walled Garden set against the backdrop of Cowdray Ruins). ❤ How many people can you accommodate? ❤ Are there any décor restrictions? (Think confetti, candles etc) ❤ Where are the best photo spots? ❤ Can you accommodate a live band or DJ? ❤ Is there any accommodation nearby? Finally, even with restrictions lifted it’s still important to ask about the details of the venue’s cancellation policy as well as finding out what the team is doing to make weddings Covid-safe. Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

GONE WITH THE WIND

I’ll be walking down the aisle outdoors. How should I wear my hair to avoid it looking messy if it’s a bit windy? Toni says: You’re absolutely right to ask this question. Every bride wants her hair to be a focal point for all the right reasons. The worst thing on a windy day is having your locks blowing all over the place with the pictures to prove it. At this point many worry that this means they’ll have to wear their hair scraped back with a ton of hairspray to boot, but this isn’t necessarily the case. An expert wedding stylist will still be able to achieve a secure yet soft and flowing up style with a few delicate tendrils framing the face. This look offers an elegant and natural vibe without looking too coiffed, since brides are loving the more relaxed and informal styles right now.

THE NEWBIE

I don’t normally wear make-up. How will I know what looks, shades and products will suit me for my big day? Zoe says: The best thing you can do is speak to your make-up artist and discuss your concerns during your trial. Send them pictures of yourself both without make-up and with, on an occasion when you’ve worn it, to give them an impression of what you’re comfortable with. I love seeing my clients in makeup they’ve done themselves as it enables me to enhance the look and share those skills. It also means it’s not a complete shock when they look in the mirror! In terms of shades, start with light neutrals and build up the depth until you’re happy. If you want to add a pop of colour, shimmery pinks and lavender are so pretty on the majority of skin tones. If you’re doing your make-up yourself for the big day, I’d still recommend booking a trial with a professional. They’ll be able to find your perfect shade of foundation, as well as identify other suitable products that you’ll be able to buy yourself to use even beyond the wedding.

SILKY SMOOTH

I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my super-cute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

WELLNESS

The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY

We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com

#FRESHSTART Bored with hot water and lemon in the morning? Then maybe it’s time for a Fresh Start with Pukka’s newest caffeine-free organic tea. Expertly blended with sustainablysourced organic herbs, delicious zesty organic lemon and warming aromatic fennel seeds, it gently awakens your body and mind to a new day helping you feel your brightest self. What’s more, this stimulating yet soothing blend helps to strengthen the digestive system to support optimum metabolism. Priced at £2.99 for 20 sachets, it’s available at https://uk.pukkaherbs.com, and from health food stores and supermarkets across the land.

#FindYourInnerCalm Designed to accompany ESPA’s sensorial collection of Signature Blends, the Aromatic Essential Oil Diffuser, £85, harnesses the harmonising power of aromatherapy to nurture your wellbeing. Whether you want to wind down and relax, improve your focus, lift your spirits or lull yourself to sleep, the diffuser’s ultrasonic vibrations humidify the atmosphere and disperse your choice of precious natural essential oils by releasing the perfect amount of fragrant vapour into your home. Find it at www.espaskincare.com

#ThePowerOfSleep Given the trials of the last year, looking after ourselves at home has never been more important, so to help with this endeavour, The Somerset Toiletry Company has created a collection of gifts to promote self-care and wellness and we’re all about its Sleepeze range. After all, the importance of sleep when it comes to ultimate wellbeing can never be underestimated, it’s crucial for body and mind. The Sleepeze Calming Gift Set, £9.95, includes a silky eye mask, pillow mist, and essential oil-based rollerball. Then there’s the Calming Sleep Stones, £11.95 – 200g of volcanic rock infused with essential oils to enhance your night-time routine. Finally, in the collection is the Calming Bath Salts, £4.95, perfect for washing away that build up of daily stress before bed. Treat yourself at www.thesomersettoiletryco.co.uk

#SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com 89

MAKING

waves

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks

90

INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.

A

ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs eventready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.

I would say, start with the neckline of your desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.

If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their big-day, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.

What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.

Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.

How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.

What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.

What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.

How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?

For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk

What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 91

CLOSE TO HOME

Sark is the smallest of the Channel Islands and considered the jewel of them all. Already famous for several things; its unspoilt beauty, for having no cars and for being the world’s first Dark Skies Island, it now welcomes a new attraction. The tiny island is celebrating the imminent launch of its first community dairy. From this June, no trip to this stunning rural island hideaway will be complete without meeting the 16 stunning Guernsey dairy cows, seeing the dairy parlour in action and picking up treats from the shop. At the helm are dairy farmers Jason and Katharine Salisbury, who, with 20 years’ experience of looking after Channel Island dairy cows in Suffolk, harboured a longheld dream of running their own small artisanal farm in Sark. From 80 applicants worldwide the Salisburys bagged their dream job, combining authentic dairy farming with providing a delightful destination where you can visit and be charmed. The island enjoys a variety of accommodation options from glamping to luxury hotels and everything in between. For self-catering the beautiful Clos a Joan rental cottages are a must-visit (www.sarkholidaycottages.co.uk) or, for a touch of honeymoon luxury, check out Stocks Hotel (www.stockshotel.com).
