Tilgate Park Weddings YOUR VENUE YOUR WAY

OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS BEAUTIFUL WEDDING GARDEN • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • MAZE • Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines all adorned with thousands of fairy lights. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats.

EVENTS ARENA

The perfect location to host a large marquee for your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Measuring more than 1,000 square metres, there’s ample room for extra entertainment like a band or giant garden games and it is conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around every twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer. t dawned on me just recently that I have just six months left until I transform from editor into bridesmaid extraordinaire! Is anyone else freaked out by how quickly time passes en route to W-day? Despite spending my days telling all of you lovely people how to plan, I have very much not practised what I’ve preached and am now panicking about getting into shape. So, it’s a good job indeed that I’m not the bride, who fortunately is literally the most organised person I’ve ever met. That being said, the bride tribe (plus groom) recently decided to hit a wedding show at the venue, hosted by our sister company County Wedding Events, looking for finishing touches and bridesmaid dresses. While I’ve attended many a wedding fair in my time with my professional hat on, nothing beats the excitement of experiencing one from the other side of the fence. So, to help you get the most out of your next visit, I’ve compiled my top three tips. 1. Pre-register. Make sure you sign up on the organisers website. CWE is offering timed entry slots at the moment to keep you all safe and allow you to enjoy your browsing comfortably. 2. Be prepared. Find out who’s exhibiting beforehand and make up a hit list of the suppliers you want to check out. You can usually find this info on the event’s website, but if not there’ll likely be show guide available, so grab one when you arrive and settle down with a cuppa or glass of bubbly before you venture any further. 3. Snap happy. Make sure your smart phone is fully charged and be ready to get as many pics as you can of the things you love. Big events can be a little daunting and the last thing you want is to get home and forget where you saw that incredible cake. And now, without further ado, I bring you the latest issue of Your Sussex Wedding. Check out these pages for my issue highlights to ensure you don’t miss a thing – we have a world of wedspiration waiting for you as always.

When putting together our real weddings, selecting showstopping couple shots is always by favourite part. This issue, some of the region’s finest share their most memorable.

32 Was there ever a more showstopping wedding venue than The Royal Pavilion? Everywhere you turn you’re walking in the footsteps of King George IV and his royal court. As a history buff, it’s one of my favourite places and I spent hours poring over April and Lee’s wedding photos for their real wedding feature – just a tad envious!

I’m a sucker for a stylish table setting. Dressing your tables to perfection can quickly take your venue from zero to hero.

I for one would love nothing more than to be presented with a grazing platter like this at a wedding. Absolutely mouthwatering its easy to see why they’re still growing in popularity, and can be tailored with local delicacies to suit the season. 7

FLAVOUR OF LOVE

Horsham-based wedding cake maker Carrie Raymond of Carrie’s Party Cakes is now offering tasting sessions and bookings are being accepted. For a small charge, you can try up to four flavours of cake to help you choose the ultimate big-day bake. You’ll each receive the cake in the actual-size portion it will be served in on the day so you can get an idea of how it will look when cut. During the tasting you’ll have the opportunity to chat with Carrie about everything from décor, colours, flowers and venue, through to what’s important to you, allowing her to design the cake having taken everything into account. Carrie says, “While it’s tempting for couples to scour the internet looking for a cake they like, I often find that it doesn’t work with their venue once set up, or it has a completely different feel to the rest of the styling, looking disjointed. By discussing everything during the tasting session we can make sure that they have the flavours they love in the perfect cake for their day. The result? Photos to die for!” Find out more and book your own tasting session at www.carriespartycakes.co.uk

LOCAL VENUES

THE GRAND HOTEL, EASTBOURNE 01323 412 345 | www.grandeastbourne.com The Grand Hotel in Eastbourne exudes five-star luxury and historical elegance. This 19th-century hotel’s interior was restored in the late 1990s to reflect its rich legacy as the go-to holiday destination for the upper-middle classes. It’s also welcomed many famous figures including Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Conan Doyle and Claude Debussy. All of this makes stepping inside The Grand like stepping into a bygone era, where elegance, style and luxury take centre stage. The White Palace as it’s affectionately known sits proudly opposite the Western Lawns, with its 400-foot frontage standing in prime position facing the English coastline towards Beachy Head. It boasts splendid views out to sea and along the coast with its own beautiful Princes Lawn perfect for an al fresco drinks reception. There are a variety of rooms available for the “I dos.” The largest is the The Compton Room with space for 330 guests. Part of the Devonshire Suite its elegance harks back to its beginnings as the hotel’s ballroom when it opened in the 1800s. Boasting ornate plasterwork, vast ceilings and a sprung dancefloor, the Devonshire Suite is the ultimate setting

for a wow-factor wedding. The most intimate of ceremony spaces is the Arundel Room, which can accommodate 60. It offers wall-to-wall windows, neutral colour scheme and stunning chandeliers. Again a whole host of spaces are ready to welcome you for your celebrations, capable of hosting anywhere between 16 to 250. We love the Mirabelle Restaurant, which can seat 50 nearest and dearest for the wedding breakfast. It’s the Hotel’s award-winning fine-dining restaurant. It mirrors the charm found throughout and even has access to its own garden, which can be used for drinks during the warmer months. The Arlington on the other hand is a fairytale of a room with its high ceilings and chandeliers. The muted tones of red, gold and cream ensure that whichever colour palette you choose it’ll be in keeping with the décor. The space benefits from wrought iron moulded fireplaces dominating each end and its floor-to-ceiling windows create a bright and airy feel. It can offer seating for up to 55 guests for a private banquet and 70 for the evening bash. Accommodation is included in all wedding packages, except the Classic and a menu tasting is available too with several of the options. There’s also a discounted overnight-stay rate for your first anniversary.

WINTER WONDERLAND

ROYAL PAVILION, BRIGHTON 03000 290 905 | www.brightonmuseums.org.uk This breathtaking former royal Regency palace offers a one-of-a-kind wedding venue in the heart of Brighton and Hove’s cultural quarter. One of the most exotically beautiful buildings in Britain it was designed to entice, enrapture and enchant the great, good and grand of King George IV’s court. The Royal Pavilion’s glorious garden is one of the few fully-restored Regency gardens in the country. Groups of flowers emulate jewels against the flourishing evergreens that frame striking views of the palace, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for images of your wedding day.

THE “I DOS” Your ceremony can take place in the Red Drawing Room, which has a maximum capacity of 44. This beautiful room retains much of George IV’s striking 1820s decorative scheme, incorporating the venue’s distinctive dragon wallpaper and palm-tree pillars. Located on the ground floor it’s not open to the general public and benefits from its own private entrance leading directly from the Regency garden and offering the feel of true

exclusivity on your special day. For evening “I dos” the dazzling Music Room, one of the palace’s most spectacular state rooms, is available. It has space for 90 loved ones who enter via the Pavilion’s grand entrance and are led there via the exotic, Chinese-inspired Long Gallery. Its extraordinary interior is lit by nine lotus-shaped chandeliers, with stunning walls decorated with rich red and gold canvases in Chinoiserie style, supported by painted dragons. The gilded dome ceiling is made up of hundreds of plaster cockleshells creating the illusion of height. All in all, a truly regal and unforgettable setting to mark the start of your married life.

THE CELEBRATIONS The Royal Pavilion can be hired for your reception even if you’re not holding your ceremony at the venue. The King William IV Room, situated on the first floor offers and elegant setting for day and evening. With hand-painted Chinese-style wallpaper and hanging lanterns, it also benefits from a private entrance, its own lobby and a caterer’s kitchen. It can host 80 for a drinks reception, 70 for a standing buffet or 60 for a seated meal.

BUXTED PARK HOTEL 01825 733 333 | www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/buxtedpark This impressive Grade II Georgian country house boasts a whole host of period features lending the most picturesque of backdrops to your special photographs. The hotel is nestled amongst stunning Ashdown Forest parkland and is reached by a long tree-lined drive. Built in 1722, it has a wealth of history, having once welcomed William Wordsworth, Winston Churchill and Marlon Brando as guests.

THE “I DOS” There are several ceremony spots available, and undoubtedly the cosiest is The Coat of Arms. Found at the heart of the hotel, the lounge features a grand 18th century working fireplace. It can host 120. Nearby and

similarly ideal for a winter ceremony is The Library, with room for 50 loved ones. When the weather is warmer, The Coat of Arms Lawn and The Orangery are fine alternatives. There’s even a chapel within the estate’s grounds offering another dimension to your big day.

THE CELEBRATIONS Receptions take place either in The Ballroom, for 120, or The Orangery, for 70. The former is the state wedding room and features no less than five Empire chandeliers, complementing the five full-length Georgian sash windows. It also features two ornate fireplaces and access to the balcony. The seven spacious master suites have all undergone a recent refurbishment and use of the bridal suite is included in your wedding package. 29

Wed in Brighton Editor Kelly Andrews spent a night in Brighton experiencing some of its finest wedding venues and wine

B

righton is a place bursting with character and charm, one of the county’s jewels. So, I was thrilled to get the chance to spend a night there sampling some of Sussex’s best produce in Nyetimber English sparkling wine, while enjoying the sights from the British Airways i360 Viewing Tower, before resting my head at Malmaison. Click play to join me on my trip, and read on to find out more about hosting your own wonderful wedding day in Brighton.

URBAN CHIC MEETS SEASIDE SPLENDOUR The first thing to strike me about Malmaison Brighton was how easy it was to get to. I usually use the park and ride when I head to the city, so wasn’t sure what to expect of its location. Situated by the Marina, it’s simple to bypass the hustle and bustle of the city and head straight there. What’s more, with the neighbouring free public car park, its just a short and very scenic 30

stroll across the Boardwalk, to the hotel’s front door. The super-chic Malmaison has the feeling of a sophisticated urban boutique hotel, while offering all the benefits of being part of a larger group. Our oh-so trendy and minimalist base was a Club Deluxe Sea View room, which afforded us every luxury including a showstopping view of Brighton Marina from the balcony. Indeed, as you’ll see from my vlog, I

Keith Meredith

HIT THE HEIGHTS To say I was excited to visit the British Airways i360 Viewing Tower would be an understatement. We drove along Brighton seafront, not sure what to expect from a wine-tasting at 450ft, but certain it would be something to remember. The autumnal sea breeze whipped through my hair as I got out of the cab and we passed through security. Uberkeen, we arrived bang on the requested 30 minutes prior to the flight, and had time to admire the surrounding sights of the West Pier at sunset and the quirky Upside Down House. The location is an Insta-paradise! Waiting on the beachfront terrace it was easy to picture a summer wedding drinks reception with wow factor. What an extraordinary place to host a wedding! As the doors to the pod slid open allowing us inside to defrost, I was treated to my first peak at the glass viewing pod – ten times the size of a London Eye capsule and home to the South Coast’s highest bar, The Nyetimber Sky Bar. Here, you can rather spectacularly say “I do” in the sky accompanied by 60 of your nearest and dearest seated theatrestyle. You can then stay for your wedding breakfast or head into one of the venue’s flexible event spaces on the ground, capable of hosting anywhere from 20 for a intimate banquet in the 1866 West Pier Toll Booth, up to 480 for an evening bash in the Attenborough, Birch and Constable suites when joined. The aforementioned beachfront terraces offer stunning views of the sea making an ideal spot for canapés, an al fresco reception or beach barbecue as you take in the sunset together. Wherever you decide to eat though, the venue’s chefs will create your menu according to your personal taste using only the finest seasonal ingredients, many of them sourced locally from the South Downs region.

REVIEW

British Airways i360

struggled to tear myself away from it! Whilst there I had chance to check out the wedding spaces, which have been designed to be as flexible as possible with the perfect spot for every stage of your day. A highlight is the lovely conservatory and terrace where we enjoyed breakfast during our stay. It can accommodate up to 40 loved ones for a seated meal, who can later spill out onto the terrace for al fresco mingling and drinks overlooking the Marina. Alternatively, it can host up to 80 for a drinks reception or barbecue. However, if a completely blank canvas is what you’re looking for the Work + Play rooms are what you need. One big space or split into three individual sections it can be tailored to meet your requirements and you can decorate according to your theme. At its smallest it can hold 30 and at full capacity, fully opened up it can play host to 150. For intimate celebrations The Cage is the ideal area. Positioned in the heart of the restaurant, Chez Mal, this semi-private dining room offers you a dining experience for up to 16. You can also exclusively hire the entire restaurant with everything you need to make your ceremony and celebrations special, when you’ll be accompanied by 140 for wedding breakfast and 250 for the evening. From delicious banqueting options to interactive food stations or afternoon tea, the venue’s chefs offer a range of dining packages to ensure you have your wedding your way. If the delicious three-course meal and cocktails we enjoyed, having returned from the wonderful i360, were indicative of what will be offered for your wedding feast, you won’t be disappointed.

ME AND THE SKY If there’s one thing I can tell you with all certainty it’s that choosing Nyetimber English sparkling wine for your big day will mean you’re in for a real treat. I was lucky enough to sample three of the winemaker’s offerings and each one was more delicious than the last. So, it came as no surprise to me when brand ambassador Zoe, our host for the evening, told us that every single vintage Nyetimber has released since 2006 has won either a gold medal or gold trophy in international competition. In fact, in 2018 head winemaker Cherie Spriggs was honoured with the sparkling winemaker of the year award at the prestigious International Wine Challenge. This is basically the Oscars of the wine world and it was made all the more significant by the fact that she was the first person outside of Champagne to win it, as well as the first ever female. Impressive stuff. Nyetimber (meaning new

wood) has six vineyards in West Sussex, two in Hampshire and three in Kent. So, it felt really special to sample quality local produce in such an iconic Sussex setting. Classic Cuvee was the first one I got to try. It’s Nyetimber’s house wine representing 75 per cent of its production. This signature multi-vintage is a classic blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinto meunier, perfect for toasting your nuptials. The Rosé, I understand, flew from the shelves during the last lockdown meaning it’s now in short supply. So, if you can get your hands on a bottle I’d advise you not to hesitate! It’s a delightful bubbly glass full of berry flavours, evocative of the English summer. Finally, my favourite, the Cuvee Chérie. Ideal served with flavoursome food, it would make a wonderful accompaniment to your wedding breakfast. It’s a multivintage with the new identity of the winemaker’s demi-sec, the first of its kind in England.

REAL WEDDING

W

hen April and Lee met up for their first date at a pub in Brighton they quickly felt at ease in each other’s company. So, it didn’t take long for their relationship to blossom from there and they moved in together six months later. April says, “We’re like chalk and cheese, but I think that’s why it works so well – being so different brings balance to the relationship. We do have lots in common though, including a shared love for our adopted Birman cat, Larry.” The couple had been talking about getting married for a while, but April didn’t expect a proposal. She’d assumed they’d just agree a date, send out invitations and that would be that! However, Lee had other, much more romantic ideas. As per their annual tradition, the pair headed to Lancing to pick out their Halloween pumpkin at the patch there. But before long, April lost sight of Lee, who unbeknownst to her had wandered off to find a private spot to carry out his plan. When she eventually found him, he was kneeling next to a tiny pumpkin and said, “What about this one?” As she moved closer to check it out, he turned around and held up her mother’s engagement ring, which she’d always dreamed would be hers some day. April recalls, “I couldn’t believe it and sheepishly said, ‘Oh go on then!’” April and Lee were keen that their day and theme should be centred around their beloved Brighton – the city they call home. Having visited the iconic Royal Pavilion in the past and feeling in awe of the incredible Music Room, the pair had already discussed this as the dream location for their vows. So if, like us, you can’t wait to discover more, read on as the bride tells us about their very special wedding day...

SETTING THE SCENE In honour of Lee’s heartfelt and memorable proposal the couple opted for an autumn-themed day, with pumpkins featuring throughout. Large fresh flower displays decorated the tables, featuring gorgeous, rich, seasonal hues and mini dried pumpkins. While April’s stunning bouquet shared the same motif, it also had two charms attached containing pictures of her grandparents on their wedding day. The big-day bake was iced in white and topped with a large pumpkin. Mini versions were gifted to guests as wedding favours to take home and enjoy.

LOOKING THE PART The bride found her dream dress, Hadine from Modeca’s Le Papillon collection, in the first boutique she went to while visiting her family in Cork. “It was dress number nine of 12 I tried on. Once I was in it and saw the flutter sleeves and chapel-length tulle train, I fell in love,” she explains. April chose a full-length chapel veil, handmade in Cork. Its design name was April, so it was a must-have really. She also accessorised with bespoke earrings and a headpiece designed by Janie at The Lucky Sixpence, as well as her late grandmother’s charm bracelet. Lee wore a maroon bespoke suit by Gresham Blake, with an autumn-themed lining. Everything was designed to his own specification and was a lovely surprise for April who didn’t even know what colour or style he’d chosen. The groomsmen wore navy suits with maroon ties. They were given a colour guide, but could choose their own attire. The bridesmaids were dressed in either gold or emerald green. April explains, “I wanted them to feel confident in a style they loved, so they got to choose their own.” Each dress was different, but the palette worked beautifully with the overall autumnal vibe.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE After the “I dos” the couple headed to The Grand Hotel for their reception with 15 of their nearest and dearest. Everyone enjoyed a superb three-course meal in the beautiful Pavilion Room, overlooking the West Pier. The evening entertainment was provided by pianist Will Mavin, who also played for the newlyweds’ first dance. April remembers, “He was exceptional and can also pay guitar for events if preferred.”

REAL WEDDING MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We were both getting nervous in the lead up to the ceremony as it was late in the afternoon so we’d been waiting and prepping all day,” April remembers. As the wedding car pulled up at the front of the Pavilion the bride was met by friends who were no longer able to attend due to restrictions. They’d all gathered to welcome her as she stepped out of the car and made her way towards the aisle. “This meant a lot to me and Lee,” she tells us. April walked down the aisle to The Rose by Bette Midler, played on the harp. Lee even got his request in with the harpist for a bit of Metallica as they signed the register.

LOVE IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS April and Lee’s wonderful wedding day was the culmination of many months spent planning and re-planning throughout the pandemic. In fact, the pair had planned no less than three wedding days, each one being downsized in line with evolving restrictions. Things were still changing two-weeks before the big day when they were forced to cut the guest list down by half. April says, “We tried to remain grateful throughout as the date was special to us and we decided no matter how limited we were by the restrictions, as long as we were allowed to marry on that day, we would. So, to be able still to marry in the Music Room and have a lovely sit-down meal with our nearest and dearest was amazing. Of course, we missed many people, but we had Zoom on and hired a videographer, who sent on a short film of the day’s highlights to them. “We realised that no matter what happens beforehand, the moment you say those vows, nothing else matters. All in all, we had an incredible day that we’ll never forget.”

THE GETAWAY The duo turned to Hove-based Blake Private Travel to find them an extra special mini-moon in the Cotswolds. We understand they had a terrific time despite returning home a week later only to head into another lockdown. “We went to Farncombe Estate and stayed in a luxury treehouse. Our travel agent Katie planned the whole itinerary and ensured we had an extra special stay,” April shares.

WITH THANKS The newlyweds are incredibly grateful for all the love and support they received in planning and re-planning their big day, not least to their right-hand woman, April’s mother, Joss. “We couldn’t have done it without her,” April remembers. What also stood out for the pair was the exceptional service and support they received from the lovely Charlotte at The Royal Pavilion and Charlotte at The Grand Hotel. “Both were so attentive, supportive and creative with ideas as circumstances kept changing due to the pandemic. I can’t recommend them both enough,” April tells us.

“I’d recommend an on-the-day coordinator to take away any stress and problem solving. It also avoids the need for the wedding party to get involved, so everyone can just enjoy the day.” 35

REAL WEDDINGS

WITH ME

Amy and Niall’s nautically-themed nuptials took place at The Gallivant on 6th August, 2021 Images courtesy of AE Photography

N

iall and Amy met on a cruise ship in 2010 – she was a singer and dancer, he was a cadet. They started chatting during a night on the town in Barbados and Amy remembers, “Niall plied me with too much pineapple rum.” Niall proposed at one of the couple’s favourite spots: The White Cliffs of Dover. It was one of the first places they’d visited together and with the ships in the background it fitted in perfectly with their story. The pair had planned to tie the knot in Thailand, but gave up hope when Covid travel restrictions made it quite impossible. After postponing twice, they began looking for a venue closer to home. Amy explains, “The Gallivant was perfect for us, because it fitted our relaxed beach theme. The main draw was its exclusivity as well as the staff who were super-organised and friendly. It was a bit of a gamble, as we’d only been able to view the venue online, but it was definitely one that paid off as we couldn’t have loved it more.” Join us as the bride gives us the lowdown on their gorgeous wedding day...

39

I chose a Martina Liana dress. I loved its soft silk and lace. At the time the wedding was still planned for Thailand so I didn’t want anything too heavy or structured. Luckily the weather on the day was beautiful, even though we didn’t make it to Asia. I received lots of compliments and it was super-easy to dance in.

I loved all our suppliers, but our hair and make-up team, The Bridal Dream Team, definitely calmed me down in the morning while helping me to look and feel fantastic throughout the whole day. My hair and make-up didn’t budge! Also, thank you to the seamstress for sewing into my dress a blue heart made of my dad’s shirt. It made me feel like he was with me on my big day, just as I knew he’d have wanted to be.

We were both a lot more nervous than we’d anticipated in the morning. After so much rearranging, I think we just wanted it all to run smoothly. Once the ceremony was over though, we relaxed and tried to follow everyone’s advice of taking in as much as possible. The day really did fly by. We decided to go for candles for our wedding favours and personalised them with a bit of rope and a ship’s wheel to bring in the nautical theme, along with our names and the date. The line ‘plans change, hearts don’t’ was a nod to our planning journey.

40

Our flowers were absolutely beautiful. We went for touches of blue with lots of orchids as a nod to Thailand. I chose a large cascading bridal bouquet, which I loved. Our table plan matched the place names, invitations and thank you cards. We went for a cornflower blue watercolour design to keep the beach theme going. We chose a simple design as we don’t like too much fuss.

REAL WEDDINGS

As the food was served on sharing platters, there wasn’t too much space for centrepieces. So, we had small vases of flowers featuring our white and blue palette with plenty of green foliage to maintain a modern look. The tables were named after points on a compass. They were printed with a map in the background and framed to make them stand out. We also thought it would be a great idea to recycle the frames for our wedding photos.

Niall was pleased with his Hugo Boss suit and it fitted perfectly. The groomsmen all wore navy suits, which they picked themselves so they could wear them again. We wanted a simple design for our cake. It was airbrushed to fade from blue to white and decorated with flowers from our florist.

The Gallivant prepared some amazing sharing platters. The food was all locally-sourced and delicious. Our vegan and vegetarian guests were really happy with their options too.

The bridesmaids wore lovely cornflower blue chiffon dresses with a tiny bit of beading around the waist and on the straps that sparkled in the sun.

41

Live band Limousine performed a mix of classic cheesy wedding songs and modern pop hits. I wanted tunes that everyone would know, and it worked as the dancefloor was never empty even for a second! Lead singer Laura performed with me on the cruise ships, so I knew she’d be fantastic. We also had a number of my friends prepare their own songs to sing while the band took a break – it’s definitely a plus having so many loved ones who love to perform!

The best part of the day was seeing everyone together, especially after a year of lockdowns, social distancing and face masks. Seeing everyone smiling, sharing the dancefloor and having a good time was definitely a highlight. Of course, marrying the love of our lives was also a huge moment, and after replanning, it definitely makes you realise what the day is all about.

An all time love

REAL WEDDING

Xander and Kay are living proof that love comes along when you least expect it Images courtesy of Divine Photography Eastbourne

45

T

his isn’t a story of love at first sight, as Kay and Xander didn’t actually get on or indeed like each other much when they began working together at the local department store. But after a few short months they came to be firm friends, frequently laughing together and getting told off by their boss! Kay says, “I never dreamed that we’d become a couple let alone get married.” Eventually, they started meeting up outside of work and would regularly spend time chatting late into the night. “Xander never made me feel under pressure or uncomfortable and we both enjoyed one another’s company. He was the first one to say ‘I love you,’ and I couldn’t believe it, but I felt exactly the same,” Kay explains. Xander proposed to Kay on Christmas Eve, 2019 and it was certainly unexpected. Kay had gone into the bedroom to get changed and when she came out found him on one knee holding out the engagement ring. “I didn’t believe him at first and thought he was joking, but eventually said ‘yes’ when he started complaining of a bad knee having been down there for a while,” she remembers. The couple live a matter of seconds away from their wedding venue, The Cavendish Hotel, which has always been a firm favourite with Kay’s side of the family. Since they wanted somewhere to celebrate that was convenient for everyone, the choice was simple. Here, the bride shares her memories of the big day, 31st July 2021...

We both felt so relieved that our special day was finally able to go ahead after having to reschedule in 2020 due to the pandemic. Before it was time to walk down the aisle nerves got the better of me. This wasn’t helped by the fact that my dad turned up late. Honestly, I was panicking so much. Moral of the story: don’t get a taxi to a wedding or if you do, aim to turn up at least an hour early! But once I saw Xander all of that went away. He’d been nervous too, but being in the room with our family and friends while he waited for me made him less anxious – he was just glad I turned up. It was so lovely to see our loved ones come together and for some of them meet for the first time. The whole thing for us was so magical, neither of us ever expected to get married so it was surreal.

We had a LOVE sign and a sweet cart, which was a huge hit with our guests. I would say we had a lot of big kids at our wedding, including us! We also hired a photo booth, which was never empty – there was always someone up there taking silly photos with the props! At the end of the evening we received a guest book filled with the pictures taken and lots of lovely messages from our loved ones, as well as a USB stick with the images on it as a keepsake.

When I came across my pre-loved dress I fell in love with it and knew it was the one for me. It made me feel like a princess. I’m not really a girly girl, but the gown was glamorous, elegant and really made me feel beautiful. Xander wore a royal blue suit with a white shirt and pink tie. The best man, his brother, was dressed to match and my father wore a navy, suit with a purple shirt. He also accessorised with a pink tie. 46

REAL WEDDING

My two bridesmaids chose their own attire – full-length, pink dresses, which were fitted at the top and flowy from the waist. Our photographers were fantastic. Jen and Andrew really made us feel at ease and captured us naturally, at our best, we were really happy with how our pictures have come out.

The dancefloor was full all night, particularly towards the end when drinks had been flowing for a good while. The DJ was lovely and took pictures and videos of some of the group dances, as well as our first dance. We were really lucky with our entertainment.

“Enjoy the day, embrace every moment of it. I already want to renew my vows!”

We went to Canterbury for a few days on honeymoon and stayed at The Canterbury Lodge Hotel by the cathedral. After a certain time the public aren’t allowed in, but because our hotel was on the grounds we had a pass to get in and out whenever we liked. We felt like royalty for a few days.

fter the year or two we’ve all had, shoot coordinator Jane Cawood of JR Makeup Artistry wanted to arrange a project that would allow the team of Sussexbased wedding professionals to show off their best work. Too long had their lights been hidden under a bushel! The vision was bright and floral with touches of citrus and hints of vintage flair. Jane tells us, “Everyone involved worked so hard, we all had a lot of fun together on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year. I feel that element of fun shines through the images. We hope post-pandemic couples will benefit from the time local vendors have had to experiment, broaden their vision and develop their skills.” 53

edding photographer Alan Harbord and team set out to show off the impressive Medieval barn at Michelham Priory to its best advantage. Unusual and unlike many other barns available for weddings in the area, the idea was to create something warm yet unusual to complement the low-hung lighting there. This resulted in a beautifully magical ambience when paired with the light nets used in the background. With yet more of this mesmerising venue still to showcase, the team headed outside to capture some classic shots with the couple sporting a more traditional look. We think this talented bunch have beautifully illustrated just how versatile a historical venue can be.

VENUE STYLING

FINDING

Our experts explain how to set the stage for the wedding of your dreams

W

WHERE TO BEGIN

https://joemallenphotography.co.uk

Bella Timbrell from Arabella Floral (www.arabellafloral.com) says, “Think about which parts of the venue need decorating. In the ceremony area you’ll have the signing table and aisle; then for the reception space you’ll need something for the top table and centrepieces.”

www.hayleyrosephotography.co.uk for Arabella Floral

hen faced with the initial blank canvas that is your venue you may view it in one of two ways: with total panic or giddy excitement. In which case, you’ll either be in need of inspiration or focus so we turned to the county’s styling experts for support. Check out their top tips for creating a veritable wedding wonderland with wow factor.

FOCAL POINTS Bella continues, “So you’ve listed the obvious places to decorated, but are there any other focal points that would benefit from styling, maybe mantelpieces, gazebos or arches?”

THE PRACTICALITIES Sally Gallis from Luna and the Lane (www.lunaandthelane.co.uk) says, “Consider exactly what you’ll be using the space for. Will you have separate areas dedicated to the wedding breakfast away from the party zone, or will you need to think about transitioning the room from day to evening? If you don’t have an on-the-day coordinator, often the catering team or venue staff will be able to help, but you may need a crack team of your own friends and family to get involved moving furniture and props around.” 67

A QUESTION OF SPACE Sally says, “The size of the space teamed with the number of guests is a major consideration. If you’ve fallen in love with a large venue, but only have a small number of guests you should think about how to make it more intimate. For example, hanging décor will bring the eye level lower or adding taller centrepieces to your table counteracts a high ceiling.”

www.hayleyrosephotography.co.uk for Arabella Floral

QUESTION TIME Sally suggests some questions you might ask yourselves to get you started: ♥ What drew you to your venue in the first instance? ♥ What will your palette be? Are you in to muted tones, bright colours, or something more monochromatic? ♥ Are you influenced by your travels or do you have cultural influences that you’d like to incorporate? 68

ON THE MOVE Bella says, “Moveable free-standing floral arrangements, such as milk churns for a rustic-themed wedding, are a good idea as they can be utilised in both areas. And although big displays will automatically stand out, sometimes an array of smaller elements will make an impact too. The key focus really is on your style and what you can afford.”

www.joemallenphotography.co.uk for Arabella Floral

www.joemallenphotography.co.uk for Arabella Floral

KEEP IT PERSONAL Sally tells us, “You should have an idea about the sort of styling you both like, but don’t feel you have to create carbon copies of images you’ve seen on Pinterest, or worry about following current trends – they might not be a true reflection of you. Consider what it is you don’t like as well as what you do. Take inspiration from images, media, fashion, interior design and more, to generate ideas that excite you.”

THE BIG STUFF “You may have already decided on the sort of food you’d like and how it will be served. In which case, you’ll likely know the type of tables and chairs you’ll need,” Sally says. She continues, “So, the next step is to consider the practicalities of your table design. For example, if you’re having a family-style sharing dinner, you won’t want too much pretty décor in the middle of the tables. In this case, you can use individual vessels for flowers that can easily be moved during service. Alternatively, if you’ve opted for a formal meal, you may bring in some runners and centrepieces. And what about the evening? Would you like some comfortable chill-out furniture to create a different vibe or zones for your guests?”

MY PRETTIES Once all of the main elements are in place, it’s time for the fun stuff! Sally explains, “What atmosphere would you like to create? Do you want your guests to be wowed by the funkiness of the décor or would like a more relaxed, romantic feel? Consider teaming shape, colours and textures to create the ambience you’re after. “Lighting is key. A canopy of soft festoon lighting is great for a wedding, or maybe you’d like to add a touch of glam with some mirror balls.”

TOP TIP Bella says, “To get the most from your venue, I’d recommend a site visit with your florist and other suppliers, who’ll be able to look at the space and discuss the options. “Always think blue sky when it comes to ideas – it’s easier to pare back if you need to. This way you’re more likely to get the wow factor.”

Would you like your wedding ceremony to be modern, but with all the traditional elements that we all love? Would you like it to be classic, but not stuffy - formal without the formality? If this sounds like you, then let me create your bespoke ceremony full of warmth, love, and good humour at the heart of your special day. As one of my couples put it: "Just the way every marriage should start."

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

WINTER’S NATURAL BEAUTY

We can’t wait for our winter-themed wedding, but the flowers are worrying me a little. What’s available at this time of year and what would you suggest to tie them in with our theme? Having access to wholesalers widens our variety of flowers in the winter, if the seasonal options aren’t enough. So there’s really nothing to worry about for a winter wedding. Although, I do tend to use seasonal flowers and foliage from here in the UK, because I love the changing of the seasons and all that nature offers us. It’s also much more eco-friendly to use what’s available locally rather than relying on imports. In the winter months, we have many options available. Anemones are stunning and are only available from November, meaning they beautifully reflect the time of year. Hellebore (Christmas rose) is one of my favourites and they come in beautiful colours. I love to use the lime green variety in a lot of my designs, as it’s so fresh and vibrant. Berries too are abundant

and sweet-smelling winter jasmine and viburnum are great additions. Thistles bring a wonderful winter feel, and are excellent for buttonholes since they’re so hardy. If you have your heart set on roses it’s not a problem as the wholesalers offer a huge range all year long in a wide range of different colours. They’re a staple of nearly all of my clients’ wedding flowers. Foliage brings a lot to any arrangement and eucalyptus is at its best in the winter months, along with English ivy. But again, the wholesalers will have a huge variety of all sorts of textures and shapes. The first question I ask my clients is: “What’s the feel of your wedding?” We’ll then talk colours and style before I put together a moodboard to sum up the overall look and what’s available for that time of year. Trusting your florist is key. With all of the necessary information to hand, they can work their magic! Kate Lindsay | www.thenaturalflorist.net 73 

UP, UP AND AWAY

I’m loving the balloon arches I’m seeing at wedding fairs and would love to know more about modern ways to incorporate balloons into my venue styling. What do you recommend? Balloons have always been a great way to incorporate colour and drama into any wedding’s styling, their versatility is second to none. They have the ability to bring cohesion to the space, whether used indoors or outdoors, in small or large displays, they can lead the way. Organic balloon styling with florals has become a huge trend within the industry and as a speciality of ours we can’t wait to see it grow in popularity even more. Demiarches and balloon hoops are also on trend and balloon walls are particularly popular in contemporary weddings thanks to their vast visual impact. They can also be used to section or mask areas of the venue, bring a dark corner to life or create a fantastic spot for Insta-worthy guest selfies. Jamie Ashby | https://boutiqueballoonstudio.com

TOGETHER FOREVER

Yes of course! Your flowers are such an important part of your big day and to be able to keep your actual bouquet afterwards is something so many love to do. Whether it’s taking a single flower and creating a paperweight or having your whole bouquet preserved and designed within a bespoke box frame, your big-day blooms can be a beautiful memento to keep forever. Ideally flowers must be received within a couple of days after the event while they’re still fresh, then they’re photographed and the bouquet is carefully dismantled before the beautiful blooms and foliage are preserved in 3D. After several weeks, I’ll then invite you to choose your design and frame working with your ideas, colour palette and budget. All framed products are collected by hand, but if you do live some distance away there’s the option to post me some flowers to be made into a paperweight, which can then be posted back to you. Marina Hudson | www.actualflowers.co.uk

https://craigpayne.co.uk

The one thing I wish I could keep as a memento of my wedding day is my bouquet. Is this at all possible?

ALL NIGHT LONG

We’re having nightmares about those awkward periods during weddings we’ve been to where the dancefloor is empty. How can you suggest we avoid this embarrassment at our wedding? The key point to consider here is whether the right music is playing. If I were to ask you: “What’s your favourite music?” You may give me a list of amazing tunes, but will they set the dancefloor on fire? A better question to ask is: “What do you promise to dance to?” This will make you think about those songs you remember celebrating to. Think about who’ll be attending your wedding too. Are all the guests friends in the same age group with the same awesome taste in music as you, or will there be a wide age range present? Choosing your wedding party music is one of the most important aspects of the big day’s entertainment. It ensures the success of the party, and everyone’s enjoyment of it. As a minimum, you should think about working with your DJ in advance, and giving them a few request lists such as: ♥ A must-play list of your own favourite songs to dance to. ♥ Your guests’ requests of songs they love to dance to. ♥ Special requests such as your first dance. ♥ A don’t play list – songs not to be played under any circumstances! Hiring a professional wedding DJ with lots of experience should give you confidence that the dancefloor will be full all night long. Make sure you check out reviews from other couples who’ve booked the DJ you’re considering before you book and meet them beforehand. One final tip: don’t leave it to the last minute to book a pro. The last few months have meant that most are booked up for key dates already. Brian Mole | https://dancemix.co.uk

SUSTAINABLY CHIC

Grace Loves Lace has unveiled its first eco wedding gown called Lumi retailing at £2,200. It’s constructed from 96% recycled materials and has been ethically handcrafted in the brand’s Australian studio. Founder and creative director, Megan Ziems, tells us, “We were inspired to take materials that would have been otherwise discarded and use modern technology to create a beautiful wedding gown that holds so much meaning.” She continues, “The way the dress hugs and supports the body is flawless. The cup shape and wide straps are perfect for small and large busts, the split on the thigh is elongating, the pearlescent threading is visually flattering and the sheer lace panel on the lower back adds drama.” Launching alongside the gown is the Lumi veil retailing at £390 and crafted from 100% recycled tulle and lace. Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

FLAWLESS BEAUTY

What are your top expert beauty tips to get me looking my best? Alison says: Get into some good beauty habits as soon as you start planing your wedding. Your skin needs time to adapt and show the benefits. If you already have a regime that works for you, consider any additional steps you want to add to kick your routine up a level such as introducing a serum. These penetrate deep into the skin and target specific concerns like dryness, wrinkles and acne. If you’re a beginner, start with the basic routine of cleanser, exfoliator, moisturiser and SPF. Cleanse in the morning with a gentle facial wash. Pores need to be clear for skincare and treatments to absorb. I recommend a double cleanse at night to remove all traces of make-up, pollution and dirt, and be sure to use a clean face cloth every day. Use SPF daily, even when it’s cloudy, as sun damage will prematurely age you. A course of facials is also a great idea in the run up to your wedding, but take advice from a skincare professional about what’s best for you. And remember the golden rule: look after your body on the inside in order to benefit the outside. Drink two litres of water and eat your five-a-day. Most importantly, don’t leave it until the last minute to start working on that effortless bridal glow.

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

We’re trying to ensure our wedding day is as green as possible. How can I extend this to my big-day beauty? Naomi says: Being sustainable and using green products on your wedding day doesn’t mean you need to compromise on quality or look. Green beauty has come a long way since it started and there’s now so much choice. Making a few simple swaps and changes to your skin routine or make-up bag can make a big difference to your footprint and have a really positive impact on your skin. Whether you’re looking for a brand to be cruelty free, use packaging with less environmental impact or focus on organic ingredients, there’s something out there for you. For me, the most important part of any wedding-day look is the skin; the most natural thing of all. I recommend starting this process with a course of holistic facials leading up to your wedding day to get your skin happy and healthy, brightened, lifted and glowing. This helps create the perfect canvas for make-up that looks natural and lasts all day. Prepping the skin is so important and one of the products I love to use is Nini Organics Crimson Beauty – it gives skin that perfect plump and hydrated look. All Nini’s products are natural, organic and come in glass packaging. Some of its products are also refillable so it’s a win-win! I then like to work with make-up products that are versatile and nourishing to create a soft, flawless, natural look that’s good for you and the planet. Ultimately, what works for you and your skin is most important, but it doesn’t have to cost the earth.

LIGHT AND SHADE

A new addition to the Lush range of perfumes, Shade offers a burst of warmth with comforting sandalwood. A fragrance with a conscience, each essential oil has its own story to tell including sandalwood from West Timor, which is extracted from protected and sustainable trees. It’s also made using a new source of olibanum oil from the Dayaxa region in Somaliland. It has full traceability down to the harvester level, with every step of the process being mapped on blockchain. In fact, Lush is working with its supplier to kickstart a project to train local women in small-scale olibanum oil distillation, a first in the community. Find it online at www.lush.com, where it’s priced at £25 for 30ml.

FEEL FLAWLESS

Speak to any wedding make-up artist and they’ll most likely tell you that primer is a must, which is why I wanted to share with you my latest discovery: Super Facialist Skin Perfecting Primer (£17). This little beauty creates a flawless-looking complexion using trusted skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, and colour-correcting pigments. It cleverly blurs imperfections by counteracting the three most common concerns of redness, sallowness and dullness, while simultaneously working to bring back skin’s natural radiance. BACK TO ITS ROOTS

Molton Brown was born in the 1970s as a hair salon based in the heart of London’s shopping district on South Molton Street, which was frequented by the Rolling Stones and many other icons of the day. Creators Caroline Bernstein and her husband would hand mix all formulations in the basement, with conscious care for the environment at the forefront of the brand’s values even then. Now, on the brand’s 50th anniversary it has re-introduced hair care to its range. The collection contains four tailored collections, each with a botanical at the core of its formulation: balancing, volumising, hydrating and repairing. This approach means you can strategically build a healthy-hair routine into your big-day prep depending on the needs of your locks. Check out www.moltonbrown.co.uk

EDITOR LOVES

In my humble opinion Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and The One Signature Conditioner are nothing short of miraculous! I won’t lie, my hair was in an embarrassing state when I decided to give these a go. I’d been swimming three days on the bounce – down water slides, through rapids, the works! My locks were a huge matted, straw-like mess. But with just one application the shampoo lathered like a dream and after leaving the conditioner in for the recommended three minutes, even wet my hair started to feel less knotty. I usually dread having to drag the brush through my hair after I’ve washed it, but in no time flat it was knot-free, smooth and ready to dry. Shiny, soft and looking their best, the state of my locks pre-Kristin Ess were a distant memory. This is definitely my new favourite hair routine and at £8 each they won’t break the bank. My advice? Head over to www.boots.com and pop them in your basket immediately!

NATURE’S HARVEST

When Estée Lauder created Youth-Dew bath oil in 1953, she revolutionised the fragrance industry and 75 years later, the brand is carrying on her legacy with the introduction of a new luxury fragrance collection. Each of the eight scents is inspired by nature’s most breathtaking moments such as the radiance of a sunset and the mystery of a moonlit flower. What’s more, Estée Lauder’s new ScentCapture Fragrance Extender technology is specially formulated to allow each perfume to last up to 12 hours after a single application – that should get you from vows to dancefloor no problem. The new Luxury Fragrance Collection (£130 100ml, £68 40ml) is available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and at www.esteelauder.co.uk

READY OR KNOT

The Detangling Mist is the newest product in The Hair Boss’ award-winning range. The brand, founded by Lisa Shepherd, former British Hairdresser of the Year, simplifies hair care into a four-step routine, and this newbie fits tidily into part three. With life getting busier by the second, this is the quick, on-the-go answer to dry, unruly hair. Targeted to fix frizzy and damaged locks, it’s designed to smooth and strengthen, while protecting your hair and preventing breakage. Lisa says, “In between washes, The Detangling Mist will soften the hair, taming any unruly knots and re-adding the shine that it’s lost since the last wash.” Priced at £8.99, it’s available at https://thehairboss.co.uk

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, so they’re for sure a feature to make the most of on the big day. For those looking for longer lashes and full brows, The B Collection has launched its Lash & Brow Serum (£8.99). This all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free product nourishes and stimulates growth in these two key areas for eyes that’ll pop as you say “I do.” Use every night before bed following your usual skincare routine and wash off in the morning – super-easy. You can also use it during the day to set your brows in place. We love anything with a dual purpose! Find it at https://thebcollection.co.uk 89

FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN SUSSEX I think I’ve always been passionate about photography and my dream came true getting my first DSLR camera 7 years ago. It all started as a hobby, then it actually became my job! I’ve achieved a lot through the years, and, like everything in life, we never stop learning. My favourite shots are certainly the ones which show spontaneity and happiness.
