Zoe tells us: “Styling my brides on their wedding day is one of my favourite things to do. When I opened the emails, I was blown away. As a small business, I didn’t expect to make the cut never mind the regional finals! To date, this is my proudest and highest achievement in my career. Although I didn’t win my category for bridal hair, I’m still so grateful to have gotten as far as I did and to have been recognised by an awarding body in the industry. Sharon Gordon Celebrant in Stourbridge has launched a new Elopement Package which is ideal for couples who don’t want a traditional wedding and all the restrictions that go with it. Sharon explains more: “I believe that the number of guests allowed at weddings will only be increased over the coming months. In response to the changing face of weddings over the past year and the ongoing situation, I’ve pivoted my business. As a nature lover and a big fan of getting outside every day, I’ve decided to focus on doing what I love: creating and officiating ceremonies and spending more time in the great outdoors. This led to me teaming up with wonderful wedding photographer, John the Photographer (www.john-the-photographer.myportfolio.com) to create an Elopement Wedding Package. My ceremonies have no rules or regulations and can take place in all kinds of locations. It’s perfect for adventurous couples who dare to be different and like to do things their own way. John has many years of experience as a wedding photographer, and I’m delighted to be working with him. We’re able to offer advice on locations for the ceremony and photographs and how they can be combined with a mini-moon in some wonderful natural settings. We wanted to take away all the stress and allow our couples to concentrate on having fun and enjoying their special day. Our Elopement Package is available throughout the middle England counties and into the Welsh borders.” For more information, visit www.sharongordoncelebrant.services 10

REAL WEDDINGS

Alice and Nick had to move their wedding due to COVID-19 restrictions but still had the perfect day at Moor Hall Hotel & Spa Images courtesy of Michelle Williams Photography

A

lice and Nick met 11 years ago in sixth form. “We had the same friendship group, so we spent a bit of time together,” says Alice. “After some help from our friends, we decided to start dating.” Nick proposed during a trip to New York City. “We were in a restaurant called The View Restaurant & Lounge on the final evening,” shares the bride. “It overlooks Times Square, and as you eat, it rotates so that you get a 360-degree view of the city. We had always wanted to go but never had the funds, so we began saving not long after we’d bought our first house together. I thought maybe we would get engaged, but he threw me off completely by saying he thought proposing in New York was a cliché. He asked me at the end of the meal, and it was a complete surprise. It was quite late, so the restaurant was fairly empty, which made it feel more intimate and special. It felt like we were the only ones there, and it was perfect.” The couple were originally meant to get married in June 2020. “As we were in the first national lockdown at that time we postponed the wedding to October 2020,” explains Alice. “Following the announcement in September that weddings were being cut to 15 guests we decided to pull the whole wedding forward and got married on Saturday 26th September, 2020 before the rules changed. This meant that we were able to have all of our closest friends and family with us.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 27 

I loved our flowers! Even with just two days notice Entwined Flowers were able to supply bouquets, a flowergirl crown, table display, centrepieces, corsages and buttonholes. We chose a mixture of pink and white roses, eucalyptus and other green foliage.

Nick and I have large families and a group of friends who are very dear to us, so we wanted a venue that could accommodate everyone. We started looking around at lots of local properties, but none of them felt right. When we visited Moor Hall Hotel & Spa, we loved the style of the room and gardens, so we booked it! The team provided all of the catering for the day. It was delicious, and our friends and family commented on how much they enjoyed the food.

My mum made our three-tier wedding cake. We had planned to order a personalised cake-topper, but as we didn’t have time to source one, we managed to find a Mr & Mrs topper in a local cake shop. To display the bake, we used an old whiskey barrel that we picked up from a local scrapyard. We decorated the top of the barrel with fake eucalyptus and roses.

To decorate the venue, we chose rustic wooden love letters from the lovely TCK Entertainments and created a chalkboard welcome sign. The chairs were dressed in white chair covers and beautiful floral sashes. These were provided by Elegant Additions and matched our theme perfectly. 28

REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a beautiful Kenneth Winston dress that I found at a designer weekend event. I loved the sparkle in the corset and the volume of the skirt. I didn’t plan to have a strapless gown, but when I tried it on it just felt right. As soon as I saw myself in the mirror, I knew it was the one. I had my mum and sister with me, and they were as sure as I was that it was the perfect dress. I had my hair styled by Forever Hair by Hollie and my makeup done by the lovely Sarah Waters Aesthetics.

On the day, the registrars allowed my dad to walk me down the aisle. We thought this wouldn’t be possible due to COVID-19 restrictions so this was a special moment for us all. Nick was happy because he knew how much it meant to both me and my dad, and we were just overcome with emotion.

Nick and the groomsmen opted for suits from Kevin Paul. He wore a pink waistcoat while the others chose a blue version.

The bridesmaids opted for a beautiful green Maya dress from ASOS. The sparkle from the sequins looked lovely next to my wedding gown.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we were unable to have any entertainment, so we opted for background music. Before the wedding, we thought it would have been something we missed, but it was so lovely to be in a room with all our closest friends and family and enjoying time together. There was lots of laughing and chatting, and it was the best day that we could have hoped and dreamed of. 29 

Throughout the morning, I felt overwhelmed. I was so happy we had been able to move the whole wedding in just two and a half days. I was also so thrilled to be marrying Nick after all these years. Right up until I walked down the aisle, I felt like a nervous wreck, until I saw my wonderful groom and all my nerves drifted away. It was the best day that we could have hoped for, even pre-COVID-19, everything was absolutely perfect.

Our nearest and dearest went above and beyond to help us turn the whole thing around so quickly. We were lucky to have such a wonderful venue and group of suppliers who love what they do and wanted to make our day extra special. We’d like to highlight the two very kind ladies from Birmingham Register Office who conducted our ceremony in such a kind and compassionate way and despite all the rules and restrictions made the ceremony feel warm, happy and memorable.

With everything that’s going on we thought it was best not to fly, so we booked three days in Wales, two in Warwick and seven in Cornwall for our honeymoon. However, as Wales went into a national lockdown, we had to change the Wales booking to a lovely place in Shropshire. We had the most peaceful and relaxing few days, and it was just what we needed after a very busy period. Unfortunately, due to the second national lockdown, the remainder of the honeymoon had to be cancelled, but we’re hoping to re-book it very soon.

Nothing can tear us apart

Gill and Simon had a fun filled celebration at Warwick House Images courtesy of Esme Fletcher Photography

REAL WEDDINGS

G

ill and Simon first met in Bognor Regis in 2001. “Simon was visiting for work,” says Gill. “He was staying at my local pub, and we got chatting over a game of pool. He was only due to stay for one more night, so we made plans to go into town that evening. The next day instead of heading home, he decided to stay. We remained in contact for several months over the phone, and in December of that year, a bunch of beautiful lilies were delivered to the travel agency where I worked. I realised then that he’d been thinking of me and how kind and thoughtful he was. We continued to have a longdistance romance for the next three years, travelling 160 miles either way at every opportunity we had. We quite often got up at 4:30am on a Monday morning to travel home for work so we could have a few more hours together. I decided to move to Warwick in 2005, and we’ve since moved to Leamington.” A few months after moving, Simon proposed to Gill. “We went for a chilly wander around Warwick on the 23rd December picking up a few last-minute Christmas presents,” shares the bride. “Simon said he had somewhere he wanted to go and pulled by my hand until we were outside Russell Lane Jewellers. He proposed to me outside and then took in to collect the ring he had already purchased. I was so surprised I didn’t even put it on, and as we went for a celebratory drink it was still in its box! We were able to share the happy news with our friends and family the next day on Christmas Eve. We went on to have a 13-year engagement and had two beautiful daughters in that time. It was lovely to return to Russell Lane all those years later to purchase our wedding rings.”

SETTING THE SCENE “Warwick House was the perfect venue for us,” explains Gill. “Having stayed at multiple hotels and venues throughout our relationship, we knew what we liked and didn’t. I always remember hearing about the opening of Warwick House, so I had it in the back of my mind from the offset. Over Christmas 2018, we decided it was finally time to get married, and we’re so thankful that we did with the subsequent pandemic and how it affected the wedding industry. We visited the property during an open day in January 2019, and fell in love with it and booked it on the spot for just nine months later. It’s so unusual to have an exclusive use venue at such a reasonable price. The team were so amazing to work with, and we’d highly recommend them.” The couple decided to donate to the Birthmark Support Group instead of giving favours. “They’ve supported our family for many years as our eldest has a facial port-wine stain birthmark,” explains Gill. “We gave each guest a card explaining our donation and our connection with the charity, along with a badge for them to wear. For the children, I made each of them a bag containing an activity book, a disposable camera, a Lego set, pencil, balloon and glow sticks.” Their big-day bake was made by Cake Actually. “We only needed a small design, so we went for a two-tier option,” shares Gill. “It was made up of a traditional fruit cake and chocolate. Our talented cake maker hand-crafted a beautiful spray of cascading lilies that looked amazingly realistic.” Simon and Gill chose candles and silver candelabra for their centrepieces. “It was the natural choice for our theme and colour scheme,” says the bride. “Our top table had a beautiful display of lilies, roses, eucalyptus and gypsophila from Jacqueline The Florist. We had this same display for my bouquet, Simon’s buttonhole and a corsage for our youngest, Phoebe. As my dad passed away nine years ago, I had a memory charm with a photo of him attached to my bouquet.” The lovebirds decided to make their stationery. “We did all the 33 

REAL WEDDINGS painting and handwriting and decorated them with artificial stargazer lilies, silver glitter and ribbons,” explains Gill. “Simon also built a ladder to display photos of those that couldn’t be with us and wedding photos from the previous generation. While we were on the lookout for wood to use for the welcome sign, we were lucky to spot a pool table in a charity shop. As we met playing pool, we grabbed the opportunity to buy it and were able to play a game on the day. As we had several children there, we set up a games room featuring the pool table, giant snakes and ladders, dominos, Jenga and skittles.” The happy couple served their guests canapes after the ceremony, followed by a three-course meal and evening buffet.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS Gill wore a gorgeous Maggie Sottero gown called Ettia from Serendipity Brides. “I knew I didn’t want a traditional design and I wanted to be comfortable, so I could play with our children on the day,” says Gill. “I picked out some sparkly styles, but none of them quite hit the button. The owner, Lisa, went to pick a wildcard and came back with my dress. It was so slim compared to other dresses that I barely noticed it on the hanger. As it was such an elaborately beaded design, I kept the accessories simple.” Samuel decided to wear a black lounge suit and shirt with a teal pattern from Peter Posh. “We wanted our wedding to be informal, and the look suited our theme perfectly,” explains the bride. “We then used a cut off from the girls’ dress alterations to fashion a handkerchief for his pocket.” “My best friend that I’d grown up with since the age of five was my maid-of-honour, and our daughters were my bridesmaids,” adds Gill. “We had a fantastic trip to Bea’s Bridal Studio to pick out their dresses. We were all able to work together to choose a style that suited them and was age-appropriate. We were so pleased that despite being an autumn wedding we chose bright colours for our bridesmaids as by chance lots of our guests wore dark hues, so it helped them stand out. As a nod to my grandma, our eldest daughter was able to wear a pearl and gold brooch in her hair.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “In line with my love for glittery thing I’d have loved to have had fireworks but knew this wouldn’t be an option at Warwick House due to their location,” shares Gill. “We agreed that we were willing to sacrifice them for the perfect venue. Instead, we chose to celebrate with sparklers on the terrace before the disco started.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We were excited but nervous on the day – after all, it had been a long time coming,” Gill shares. “For the end of October and following a week of rain, we had such a gloriously sunny day and were so lucky. Our registrars were fantastic. I was worried about meeting the person who was due to marry us 20 minutes before the ceremony, but Julia and Dee quickly grasped that we wanted to have a fun, informal ceremony and it really was that. It gave us the perfect start to our marriage.” The couple’s family and friends made their nuptials 35 

perfect. “We went on to have lots of fun and banter with our photographer, Esme Fletcher Photography, and videographers Graham and Lucy from Two Towers Media,” adds the bride. “Sam, the waitress from Warwick House, was also great and ensured everyone always had plenty of food. We were so blessed to be surrounded by our loved ones, especially a few who we thought may not make it due to illness. My maid-of-honour, Gemma, and I have shared so much together and to have her by my side every step of the way was so special. She was my right-hand women and covered everything from transporting all the items to the venue, making sure my hair was fixed to rescuing the Prosecco that was being moved away by the venue.” “Simon did a speech that he made up off the cuff which was special,” explains Gill. “My godfather also managed to photobomb us through one of the windows, which was captured perfectly and rather hilariously by our photographer.”

HONEYMOON “As we have the girls we weren’t able to go on a honeymoon,” reveals Gill. “Instead, we had a mini-moon at The Welcombe Hotel as we wanted to stay local. We hired the top suite in the hotel which lived up to our expectations. We had some congratulatory truffles on arrival and enjoyed 48 hours there, relaxing, recapping the day and eating delicious food.”

my and Daniel met through a mutual friend at university. “We quickly felt an authentic connection and could see each other for who we really were,” says Amy. “We got engaged on New Year’s Eve while on a crisp winter walk. He was very s interactive with our guests, even inviting some of our cousin DJ ible incred an had we to sing. At our evening reception, from Green Claws who kept the party going.

Saying our vows and getting to spend the whole day with our loved ones was a magical experience. 41 ď ľ

07850 464 238 | www.chinagrey.co.uk In these uncertain times, it’s understandable to feel nervous about booking your wedding. As we spent most of the last summer postponing events and reassuring our brides and grooms, we thought we’d share some of our top tips for anyone considering hiring bar services for a more intimate 2021 wedding. Firstly, don’t think about what you can’t have and look at the positives. Organising on a much smaller scale will allow you to think about your guests. Trust us when we say that the little touches go along way to making your friends and family feel privileged to be the chosen few invited to your big day. Your budget can be better spent on more personal touches such as bottles of wine as wedding favours or premium champagne for toasting. Reputable bar services will work with you to offer guidance and advice. When we work with our clients, we always ask them what they want their day to look like, so we have an idea of where to begin. One of the most important questions you should ask is what can you get for your budget? It’s important for us to have an understanding of what our couples expect as well as being able to manage your expectations. This is why it’s so important to pick the right suppliers because their knowledge and expertise will help guide you. Remember you probably haven’t organised a wedding before but the suppliers have done it many times over. The mark of a good supplier is one who can easily come up with solutions and workarounds to anything you’re not sure about or budget limitations. Most of us enjoy the challenge. First off, do your homework. A reputable supplier should be able to answer your questions very easily. Ask them what the postponement terms are should COVID-19 stop play for any reason. They should be able to offer you an alternative date at no extra charge. Also, check with them what happens to any deposits they may take as this is often a sticking point in these situations. Secondly, book early because the minute restrictions lift you’ll struggle to get all of the suppliers you want due to high demand and lastly be very clear about your budget.

s a result of COVID-19, more couples are planning intimate nuptials, so to help you create the perfect celebration, we’ve rounded up some of the regions best suppliers and asked for their top tips on creating a fabulous wedding with a small guest list.

OUR TOP TIPS ON CHOOSING A FLORIST When it comes to your flowers, keep things simple. Your big-day blooms are a great way of showing your personalities and incorporating your chosen theme or colour scheme. You can opt from a wide variety of arrangements, and by using them on a smaller scale, you’ll be able to save money. Keep in mind that some flowers are seasonal and may be difficult to source or too expensive to purchase at different times of the year. If you have your heart set on a particular flower, talk to your florist and ask if there are any alternatives or if there’s any way you can purchase artificial versions. These often look great and can be preserved as a memento of your special day. Although your wedding is small, it doesn’t mean you can’t make the space beautiful. Look for table arrangements, flower walls, bouquets, buttonholes and flower crowns. The list is endless. Skim through social media and magazines to try and find inspiration to show your chosen supplier, so they have something to work with. 45

MEET CAKE MAKER, SALLY YARNOLD FROM DON’T GO BAKING MY HEART CAKES 07552 706 712 | www.facebook.com/dontgobakingmyheartcakes Having a small wedding cake can still have as much of an impact as a large, tiered design. Small creations don’t have to be understated unless that’s the style you want and they should taste just as amazing. You still have lots of options and if you’re worried about friends and family missing out, ask your supplier to supply pre-boxed slices as a gesture to let them know you were thinking about them on your special day. When choosing your cake maker, request a consultation and tasting. At the moment many suppliers have adapted their services and are offering consultations via video call and are creating taster boxes to be posted to you. Some couples are finding that being able to plan from the comfort of their own home is a more enjoyable and relaxing experience. This also means you don’t have any pressure when making decisions about your favourite flavours, as you aren’t sitting in front of your supplier. Once you decide on your date and confirm your venue, book your supplier. With all of the 2020 postponements, 2021 and 2022 are being booked quickly. If you find your dream supplier, don’t hesitate to contact them to avoid disappointment. Keep lines of communication open. It’s understandable to be apprehensive but share your concerns with your supplier. If there are changes required with your date or guest numbers, try to let your supplier know as soon as possible to give them the best chance to accommodate these. Make sure you fully understand the terms and conditions regarding cancellation policies, booking fees, payments and rescheduling. Above anything else, enjoy the process! You should be given the same service you would expect to receive if you were booking a large wedding.

MEET WEDDING DRESS EXPERT, JULIE REILLY FROM PERFECTIONS BRIDAL STUDIO 01905 610 482 | www.perfectionsbridalstudio.com Planning a wedding is an exciting experience, and we think it means so much more during these uncertain times. Celebrating your love and future union is a great excuse to shop for more than one look if you’re planning to get married this year with a reception later on. It’s important to create a lasting memory of your wedding day, and you deserve to look and feel amazing. January is a great time of year to start your search for your dream wedding dress. This is when our boutique is taking delivery of new designs from our spring and summer collections. Typically a new gown can take between 15 and 20 weeks to order

in, and the alterations process can take up to three months. It’s recommended that you start shopping around nine to 12 months before the big day. Our boutique and many others offer the services of an in-house seamstress. If you’re on a tighter timeframe or have a specific budget in mind, now is a great time to buy yourself a luxury bridal dress for a fraction of the recommended retail price. Many shops will be selling samples to make way for new collections, and we also offer the option of paying off the cost in instalments. If you’re planning on having a smaller wedding, you may wish to shop for a more elegant and refined gown with a slimmer, more sophisticated silhouette. Designers such as Sassi Holford and Justin Alexander suit brides who want to look feminine, elegant and exude an understated beauty. Eliza Jane Howell’s style is beautifully handbeaded for those who love a more vintage look, while Essense of Australia channels a bride who is carefree, relaxed and confident.

INSPIRATION FLOWERS MEET CATERER, LIBBI COLDICOTT FROM CRANBERRY & THYME 07860 497 509 | www.cranberryandthyme.com It can be a tough decision to make – do you go with a small wedding or hold out for a bigger celebration? This is your chance to get your closest friends and family together to celebrate your nuptials, with the added bonus that you actually get the chance to spend time with each of them. Many of the brides and grooms I have catered for throughout 2020 have told me that even though it wasn’t the wedding they had planned, they wouldn’t have had it any other way. Grazing tables are a great way of catering for a smaller wedding. This can be booked or changed with only a week’s notice. We have catered in a tipi, the foyer of a church, in homes and with a smaller guest list, you can keep things cosy. To keep you and your loved ones safe, most suppliers will have several COVID-19 friendly options for you to choose from. For example, we can provide one grazing table for everyone to select from or a platter for each sociallydistanced table if your nearest and dearest are seated in bubbles. We can also provide an individual set of disposable bamboo tongs for each guest to reduce the sharing of equipment. Your caterer should also be able to cater for many dietary requirements and even provide individual platters for anyone who needs it. The best advice I can give to couples is not to start married life with debt. A good way to keep costs low is to hold a smaller event then a party when it’s safe to do so.

Even though your guest list may be small, you can still have your dream wedding cake. Dummy tiers made from polystyrene allow you to create the wow factor without an abundance of leftovers. Not all bakes need to touch the ceiling to create an impact. Some of my favourite creations are those which are small but mighty. Create an impact with a smaller, tall design adorned with flowers and sweet treats. A worded topper is an ideal way to personalise your showstopper and make it bespoke to you and your situation. From a simple ‘Mr & Mrs’ to a witty ‘Finally’ topper will make your creation stand out. I always ask my clients to create a moodboard or send over pictures they have seen to give me the best idea of their dream cake. Think colours, textures, height, tiers and flowers when looking at designs. If the date of your wedding has suddenly changed or it’s more last-minute than expected, always stay in touch with your chosen supplier to see what flexibility they have. More often than not, they will accommodate you as best as they can, even if it means tweaking your design. Not everyone wants a wedding cake, so why not choose sweet treats instead? Biscuits, doughnuts, macarons, cupcakes and cakesicles are a great way to treat your loved ones. There’s also the added bonus that they’re portable, ideal at a time when limiting contact is so important.

EXPERT ADVICE

THE LOOK OF LOVE

Q – There are so many photographers out there – how do we decide who’s right for us?

SNAP HAPPY

Q – My wife-to-be and I are looking for entertainment that will keep our guests happy throughout the day. Do you have any suggestions? Weddings are one of the best events for bringing people together, and keeping guests entertained is a key part of the day. A photo booth is an excellent addition to any celebration and a great way of ensuring your loved ones are having fun during your special day. What better way to bring people together than with fun props in front of the camera? As a photo booth owner, I have attended lots of events, and I have not seen one guest left sitting when the photo booth is open. It brings people together and adds fun to your event while keeping your friends and family entertained. When looking for a provider, I advise you to look for recommendations and reviews. Find someone who’s open about what the cost of hire covers with a contract for you to sign, and is friendly and willing to answer questions, no matter how small. Karl Fellows Photo booth expert www.fellsfunbooth.co.uk

Picking your wedding photographer is an important decision. There are thousands of suppliers in the UK, so how do you make the right decision for you? I’ve put together my top tips: Style – A professional photographer will have developed a style so look for a supplier who matches what you want. For example, I work with a fine art approach, seamlessly combining photojournalism and lifestyle portraiture. Experience – Weddings are very different to a fashion or styled shoot, they’re often fast-paced and require a photographer to think on their feet, to have observed the art of seeing and being able to react to those moments in an instant. Knowing your camera gear is critical to this, it’s a live event, and an experienced professional will know where to be at the right time to get those stunning shots. Consistency – It’s important your photographer’s style flows, it should show a level of consistency in the editing and the way they shoot. This is essential when it comes to albums and prints. Wedding photography isn’t just about a few stunning photos, it’s about a beautiful story and memories you can treasure. Variety – It’s important that you see a variety of images, not just 30 of their best. Testimonials – Can you view testimonials and past reviews? Back up – Does your photographer have backup equipment? They should have spares incase anything fails. Trust and relationship – Whenever possible, I like to meet with my couples, it gives us a chance to get to know each other and an opportunity for you to see some of my work in print. You should feel relaxed around your photographer, resulting in fun and creative photos on the day. Michelle Williams Photographer www.michellewilliamsphotography.co.uk 51 

CAPTURE THE MOMENT

www.cliveblair.co.uk

Q – A friend of ours had two photographers on their wedding day. What are the benefits of this – should we do the same?

MUSIC TO MY EARS

Q – We’d love some live music at our drinks reception, but don’t want anything too intrusive as guests will want to chat and catch up. What would you suggest? There’s nothing more romantic for a drinks reception than live harp music. It has an elegant visual impact and a beautiful, relaxing sound which will create the perfect atmosphere. The harp is inherently gentle and can provide the correct level of background music to enable guests to enjoy listening but still be able to chat comfortably. There are harps for every situation. You could arrange to see and hear them to help you choose which one suits you best. For an outdoor drinks reception, I have a carbon fibre harp which creates a bright sound that carries well in a garden setting and is light enough to easily pick up and quickly move. Alternatively, for indoor settings, there are a range of harps from small Celtic ones to large concert harps to choose from. The choice of sound and colour is yours. All my harps have electric pickups for amplification, but this is rarely needed unless you have a large number of guests. The music for your drinks reception needs to be carefully chosen and should be smooth and gently flowing to create a soft ambience. I’ve found that people appreciate tunes that they recognise so whether you prefer classical or popular, it’s a good idea to include some well-known songs in different genres to appeal to everyone’s tastes. Helen Barley Harpist www.helenbarley.co.uk 52

To get the best coverage, opt for two photographers as they’ll be able to capture your day from different angles. For example, if you and your partner like the idea of getting ready shots but are in two different areas, one photographer can stay close to the groom and his side of the family while the other can follow the bride. Throughout the day, one person can concentrate on the bridal party as they walk down the aisle, while the other can get the groom’s reaction as he sees the bride for the first time in her dress. Even when the couple is together chatting to guests, having two photographers is a bonus, as one can look for all the incidental things happening that would otherwise be missed. Having a second photographer can act as another pair of eyes during the formal photos to make sure everyone looks their best and help round up your guests to speed up the process. They will also act as a backup if anything were to go wrong on the day. Clive Blair Photographer www.cliveblair.co.uk

VENUE STYLING

Styled to perfection How to decorate your wedding venue

W

hen it comes to decorating your wedding venue, the options are endless. Whether you want to incorporate your favourite colour, a particular theme or showcase your personalities, there’s a lot you need to take into consideration. To help, we’ve put together a feature focusing on three on-trend themes.

ECO-LUXE

Sustainably embracing nature.

“If you’d like a modern theme, use a lot of one element to create a simple but dramatic look. Nature can stimulate multiple senses, think about creating an atmosphere that does just that. Sight, sound, smell, touch and even taste should all be considered when choosing your styling. Being eco-conscious doesn’t mean compromising on décor. A strongly scented flower could be the thing that reminds people of your day.” – Amy from Shiny People Events.

www.shinypeopleevents.com

www.shinypeopleevents.com

“Rethink your confetti. It may not be something you’d think about, but throwing paper isn’t environmentally friendly. Instead, why not consider more biodegradable options such as lavender, rose petals or a mix of micro flowers? It’s much better for the planet and gives a stunning mixture of colours in your photos.” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

“Reduce your food waste. Did you know that a 10th of all wedding food gets thrown away? If you’re worried about waste, why not consider fake tiers on your cake or giving your guests some to take home in a care package?” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

“Forget plastic glasses and instead opt for rented crockery and glassware. Anything that’s single-use isn’t good for the environment and doesn’t look particularly stylish either. This goes for your linens too. With so much choice available from velvet tablecloths and sequinned napkins, you can ditch the paper variety and opt for something more environmentally friendly instead.” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

“Consider the season you’re getting married in when trying to reduce your impact. Bring the outdoors in by using seasonal foliage in your table settings – keeping it simple with fresh blooms and candles that are both sustainable and affordable. Potted plants also make great favours and a lovely keepsake for years to come.” – Amy from Shiny People Events. 57

LOVELY PASTELS Romantically subdued hues.

www.shinypeopleevents.com

“Mix soft pastels alongside single pops of colour in your floral arrangements. It will help accentuate the softer hues.” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

www.shinypeopleevents.com

www.shinypeopleevents.com

“Think 1940s tearoom and floral crockery sets. Mixing tea plates, cupcakes and pastel-coloured furniture will create a nostalgic setting and transport your guests back to the classic era. Alternatively, why not incorporate a touch of glamour? The more metallics you use, the more expensive your wedding will look. Gold and blush pink is a match made in heaven. Think about adding gold foliage or copper vases to your table setting.” – Amy from Shiny People Events.

www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk

“Consider dried florals in pastel shades. There are lots of dried options available which come in a wide range of colours and are bang on-trend. The beauty of these is you can keep them forever as a lovely keepsake from your special day.” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk

www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk

www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk

“Barns, outdoor spaces and industrial venues are the perfect locations for rustic pastel weddings. Reclaimed furniture always looks beautiful with spring flowers. Contrasting the soft tones with the richness of wood modernises this colour scheme and gives it an edge.” – Amy from Shiny People Events.

“Consider soft and romantic pastels for a beautiful spring wedding. Work the delicate shades through your flowers to your stationery and table styling.” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

Make a statement.

www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk and www.emma-janephotography.co.uk

“Make sure to coordinate each element of your styling and theme. If you’ve chosen bright purple flowers, think ombre wedding invitations, purple candlesticks and agate slices as place names.” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

www.shinypeopleevents.com and www.instagram.com/bharveyphotography

“Keep it simple – the rule of three can work wonders. Using your chosen colour, think about what two tones would complement it. Pick two hues that sit close on the colour wheel that vary in vibrancy. For example, if you’ve opted for an ’80s neon pink, then pastel purples and muted lime greens would be perfect.” – Amy from Shiny People Events.

www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk and www.emma-janephotography.co.uk

“Get the balance right. You want to create a wow moment without overdoing it. Using your statement colour here and there will add fun touches and help modernise your theme. Too much and the attention could stray away from you. Finally, be brave. Keep referring to your moodboard for inspiration and try creating a physical board to help bring your vision to life.” – Amy from Shiny People Events.

“Get imaginative with crockery and glassware. Think textured plates, detailed sparkling cutlery and coloured glassware. There’s a lot more choice out there than just plain white options.” – Becky from Foxglove & Black. www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk and www.emma-janephotography.co.uk

BRIGHT AND BOLD

www.foxgloveandblack.co.uk and www.emma-janephotography.co.uk

“Don’t be afraid to be bold with your styling and use strong hues. Your wedding can be exactly as you want it and if your favourite colours are purple and black, why shouldn’t your big day reflect that?” – Becky from Foxglove & Black.

group of local suppliers worked together to create this boho-themed shoot at the impressive Lion Ballroom. Lynee Jessett from Lynne Jessett Floristry tells us: “The inspiration came from lots of greenery and having to think outside the box. I wanted to create something quirky to complement the gorgeous dress and not become a wallflower and melt into the background. I thought about texture and used grass and long drapes of amaranthus with a pop of deep wine now and then. We wanted to take full advantage of the regency look of The Lion Ballroom and had envisioned a mixture of boho and Pride and Prejudice. What would the marriage of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy look like in the 21st century? We managed to create two looks that complemented each other while still looking warm and inviting.”

Tournebize WEDDING RING MAKING EXPERIENCE A unique forever keepsake of your love Have you considered making your own wedding rings? You will receive personalised guidance and support from design to completion led by Josephine, a highly skilled and experienced jeweller. Making workshops can be an original and fun way to create presents for the bridesmaids - a hen party with a real difference! Rings, pendants, bracelets, cufflinks or tie pins can all be made under the supervision of Josephine. This would certainly be a different way of achieving the 'something new' of the old rhyme! We also offer repairs, resizing and cleaning of existing pieces before the ceremony. Why not get in touch to book a personal consultation with Josephine to talk over any ideas you may have?

Alternatively, if you prefer to have your jewellery professionally crafted, commission Josephine to make them for you! Josephine can create both your engagement and wedding rings or make you a wedding ring to match your existing engagement ring. This can also be achieved by reusing sentimental jewellery. The stones can be reset or the metal itself can be melted and used to create the new piece. This is a lovely way of incorporating family heirlooms into a modern piece. Josephine can even add ashes to the metal so that treasured memories are subtly included on your special day.

ocal photographer, Sarah James from Flashback Images put together this stylish shoot at the grand Hampton Manor. She tells us: “My husband owns Wedding Films by David James so together we decided to go view Hampton Manor. We fell in love with its charm, high ceilings, open space and original features. We didn’t want to overdress it and wanted to work with the luxurious feel that the venue offers, so I put together a simply tux and gown look. The contrast of the monochrome details played on the textures of the property, and the simplicity worked perfectly.” 73 

his gorgeous shoot took place at The Orangery in Staffordshire. The planner and designer, Rachel Moore from The Left Shoe Wedding Company was inspired after a day of studying colour theory. “I just couldn’t shake a scene from the film Hero, which involved dramatic green drapery,” says Rachel. “That’s when the colour purple quite literally popped into my head, and before I knew it, I had my colour palette. I decided to jot a note down and get some sleep, but it’s where the inspiration all began. The shoot of course evolved from that initial vision, but the idea of using unconventional and bold drapery in the shoot and pops of purple remained the core focus.” 77 

team of talented suppliers worked together to create this glamorous styled shoot. The hair and make-up artist, Ruth Hancox, tells us: “We were inspired to create a story of dress-up inside TDR Bridal Birmingham’s beautiful store. I had an amazing experience visiting the store to choose my own wedding dress, so I knew we had to have it as the backdrop for the shoot. We all share the same ethos when it comes to making our brides feel extra special for their wedding day. It’s all down to the details and a shared passion that makes us all perfectionists. We don’t compromise, we work on the principle of doing a perfect job, every time, for every bride. We’re all about empowering women to look and feel the very best they possibly can. The photographer, Robyn Francesca, has such an eye for capturing this newfound confidence, her photography is very emotive with a fashion edge. Her vision was to shoot that feeling of excitement of trying on stunning gowns in luxurious surroundings. We’re all delighted with the outcome which reflects our aesthetic for each of our brands.” 81 

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

THE PERFECT FIT

Q – How do I choose the right foundation for my skin type? Picking a foundation is hard as it comes in countless shades and formulas. If you have oily skin, use a powder foundation or an oilfree liquid version. These contain powders that absorb oil, leaving you with a smooth, matte finish. Mineral foundations also work well because the dry particles tend to absorb moisture and prevent any shine. Alternatively, if you have combination skin which is oily in some places and dry in others, then you may have a tougher job finding something to suit. I recommend mixing foundations to create a product that suits your needs. Those of you who have sensitive skin or struggle with acne, it’s best to avoid certain ingredients that can irritate your skin such as alcohol and fragrance based products. There are a few tests you can do to determine if your undertone is warm, cool or neutral. This involves assessing your hair and eye colour, what hue you look best in, how you react to the sun and the shade of your veins. Naturally black, brown or blonde hair combined with green, grey or blue eyes is an indication of a cool undertone. Alternatively, hazel, brown or amber eyes combined with black, auburn or strawberry blonde hair indicates a warm undertone. Cool people tend to turn pink or burn easily in the sun while those who are warm will bronze or tan. Blue veins on the inner wrist indicate cool; green veins suggest warm and bluish-green is neutral. Use this information to select some foundations to try out. The best place to test them is by dabbing some swatches on your jawline. This area will be truer to your natural undertone and give you an idea of how the foundation will look against your neck. Do not try it on the back of your hand and ensure you are near natural light to see the true match of the colour. Laura Timms | Hair and make-up artist www.lauratimms.co.uk

JUST FOR YOU

Q – My hubby-to-be and I are looking for statement pieces of jewellery to wear on our big day. Do you have any suggestions? Statement jewellery is the perfect way to complete your wedding day look, and there are so many different options to choose from. You could go all out and have a bespoke tiara, keep it classy with a beautiful pair of earrings or try something a little different like a contemporary statement bracelet. Your hubby-to-be might opt for cufflinks, a tie pin or perhaps a hatpin. If you’re looking for something special, why not have a bespoke piece made with your style in mind? Bespoke jewellery is a great way to tell your story on your wedding day, and you can get the most out of your jewels by choosing a piece that you’ll be able to wear again and again. The design can be inspired by the place you met or your favourite holiday together. The possibilities are endless. Elizabeth Terzza | Jeweller www.elizabethterzza.com 96

MODERN ROMANCE

Q – I’m looking for a fashion-forward dress that will wow our guests. Do you have any suggestions? Every bride has their own interpretation of the perfect gown, but there are some who are searching for a fashion-forward design that will leave their guests in awe. Here at TDR Bridal, we are all about standing out from the crowd and helping you find something that you never would have imaged yourself in but represents you perfectly. It’s that moment when you step out of your comfort zone that amazing things can happen, however, this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to have the most extravagant and bold dress. In fact, sometimes it’s quite the opposite. This is your chance to look and feel confident and when a bride feels secure, she will ooze style and sass. While micro weddings and sleek, simple looks are on the rise, there are still so many brides-to-be desperate to express their adventurous side with sparkle and colour. The biggest trend at the moment is sleeves. These are the perfect way to add personality to your gown and work well with a range of styles. Puff sleeves are bang on trend with off-the-shoulder versions making a huge comeback. We’re not saying Princess Diana here, but it’s the modern-day equivalent. Necklines are becoming a predictable trend in 2021, with an increase in higher, more demure styles. The opposite of that is a very low V neck, almost to the waistline, which if done correctly can be utterly stunning. The sharp, square neckline is also becoming hugely popular in bridal, flattering the collarbones and shoulders and it works with heavy satin, full lace and simplistic crepe. We have seen an influx in the number of brides opting for a cape rather than a veil. Visually capes are a statement piece that add extra coverage, a dramatic train and create two looks. If you have had to postpone your 2020 wedding, think of this as an opportunity to express yourself even more with the latest fashion-forward trends. Remember your style must guide you towards your perfect dress, no matter what is currently on-trend, be you and you’re sure to wow your guests. STRUT YOUR STUFF

Q – What are the latest styles and trends in menswear? With the current climate and lockdown raging strong, it can be hard to tell what the trends in menswear might be. Suits are on the way out since there are no weddings taking place and people aren’t going into the office anymore, so grooms may opt for something more casual. It’s a popular trend for weddings, and with more people spending time at home it’s ideal for people who need to look smart on video chats but still feel comfortable.
