I am a professional magician and member of The Magic Circle, based in West Midlands and perform regularly at weddings large and small across the UK. I offer a wide range of wedding packages including;

TABLE MAGIC IN BETWEEN COURSES | MINGLING DURING RECEPTION | MINGLING DURING PHOTOGRAPHS | CLOSE-UP/MINGLING BEFORE AND AFTER THE SPEECHES BESPOKE PACKAGES TO SUIT INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS

Performing at weddings is my favourite part of the job! I perform in many different arenas, both on stage and with close up, but there is something so special about being part of a wedding day. I consider it such a privilege to be able to add value to what is already such a joyful event and to be able to establish connections through the medium of magic, between strangers who share a love of the happy couple but who may not be known to each other until that day.

RING-A-DING-DING Influenstar is a new West Midlandsbased jeweller that champions sustainable but stylish jewellery. Each piece is made using recycled sterling silver which is then plated with gold – meaning each piece has had a previous life. Founded by Ruth Morris amidst the pandemic, the ethical brand sells a range of earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets and rings that are shipped in eco-friendly packaging. “It was extremely important to me from the get-go that we’d be able to provide our customers with guilt-free, quality products that don’t compromise style or sustainability,” says founder Ruth. “Whilst many brands are introducing ‘conscious’ or ‘sustainable’ lines or ranges of products, my vision with Influenstar is to ensure that our entire inventory only consisted of jewellery pieces that utilise recycled materials and eco-friendly packaging. This way, we’re doing as much as possible to offer our customers a more sustainable option than fast fashion and helping to educate them on consumer responsibility.” Visit www.theinfluenstar.com for more information.

STYLED TO PERFECTION Some of Shropshire’s finest suppliers have come together to create a styled shoot with a difference. While weddings, as we have known them, have been on hold for over a year due to lockdown, there has been a lot of activity in the background. Stockton House near Bridgnorth and Ironbridge will be a new venue opening in April 2022, and the Grade II* listed building still has more than six months of renovation work and an exclusive restaurant yet to be built. Jonathan Carter-Morris, the executive chef at Stockton House, said: “We loved the styled shoot at Stockton, and it was just nice to be able to host people and make some great food and serve a glass or two of sparkling wine. Stockton will be all about creating moments and memories, and it’ll be a wedding venue like no other. Hosting the styled shoot has got us even more excited about opening our doors next April.” The suppliers involved were Nicola Gough Photography, My Little Wedding Shop, Up Close Wedding Productions, Big Little Things, Evelyn & Elliot, Mrs Kassi Mac, Amy Roberts Weddings, Hunkington House Kitchen, Tipples, Peter Posh Formal Suit Hire, Shropshire Petals and The Scotts Model Couple. Award-winning hospitality group Caviar & Chips are rapidly growing their business and are set to create 50 new jobs in the Midlands. Caviar & Chips was founded in 2017 by Jonathan Carter-Morris and Marc Hornby, who together created a bespoke wedding catering company when Jonathan couldn’t find a caterer that could help him with his own wedding plans. Since then, the business has added a 16th-century pub in Warwickshire and an 18th-century boutique wedding venue in Shropshire to its portfolio. The wedding and events co-founder, Marc, tells us: “We were set to deliver around 100 weddings and events in 2020, but we ended up with three! The impact of COVID-19 was such a shock to the industry and, of course, all the couples who were planning their big day. Thankfully we’ve managed to help 99 per cent of our clients with a later date, and we’re looking forward to getting out and hosting again. When Jonathan and I first created Caviar & Chips, we both said that we wanted to create a great place to work, no matter what we did. We also wanted to create a business that put our clients first and was led by their choices. I think that’s helped us on our journey, and we’re so grateful to have navigated our way through

IT’S THE MOST

TIME OF THE YEAR Sarah and James had a magical Christmas-themed wedding at The Upper House Images courtesy of New Road Photography

S

arah and James met on a dating website. “On our first date, we arranged to meet at a local pub,” says Sarah. “When I got there, 15 minutes late, James was already waiting at a table with a drink. We ended up doing the pub quiz, and I loved the fact he was so easy to talk to and willing to try the quiz and have a laugh at ourselves as we weren’t very good at it!” James proposed on the 4th August, 2017. “My birthday was three days later, and I thought we were going for a birthday meal,” shares the bride. “We were at Miller & Carter, and after the waitress had taken our order, James said he had a gift for me. He got the ring box out of his pocket and pushed it across the table. James doesn’t like being the centre of attention, so he only told me instead of making a scene. I opened the box to find a stunning ring and put it on my finger. When James asked if that was a yes, I reminded him he hadn’t actually asked a question. He asked me to marry him, and of course, I finally said yes! I was so pleased that when the waitress turned up with my cocktail, I definitely needed it. I was so excited and wanted to tell our families, so I even passed on pudding!” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

It also had a fantastic worry about walking down the stairs h for us was incredibly reputation for weddings and food, whic especially Sam and Ellie, who important. The team were amazing, took care of all the little details.

The flowers tied in with our theme. After the cer emony, we placed my bouquet from Blosso ms Florist on the cake tab le and the flowergirl’s bouquet with the postbox and guest boo k.

Our cake was white chocolate and raspberry, salted caramel, black forest and lemon flavoured. We didn’t want too much decoration, so we opened for a burgundy ribbon and silver baubles on the side. Unfortunately, the lady who was due to make our cake was unable due to personal reasons, however, Sarah from Eat My Muffin Bakery kindly stepped in and fulfilled our order. Ellie at The Upper House was also great, we dropped everything off on the Friday, and she did an amazing job of getting everything how I wanted it. 30

We both love Christmas, so we decided to theme our wedding around the season. The Upper House had an amazing tree in the entrance hall, which we knew would look stunning in pictures. We used a company called Elegant Affair run by a lovely lady called Laura who helped us decorate the venue. James and I love gin, so we added lights to empty gin bottles that we had collected over time and added Christmas photo booth props and a quiz for guests.

My mum and I made the centrepieces and place cards for the tables. We used large fishbowls and filled them with lights, sparkly baubles and pinecones. We bought some green wreath place cards and re-did them using burgundy ribbon to tie in with the theme.

The catering was done by the venue, and we were able to give our guests a choice for the wedding breakfast. In the evening, we provided a buffet and had an ice cream van, after all, who doesn’t love ice cream, even in the winter?

I chose a Morilee dress from Lucy Alex ander Bridalwear. I had seen her designs and decided I wanted to try them on. We were having afternoon tea in Stafford, talking abou t dresses, when I found a shop around the corner that stocked them. We popped in, and the ladies were so helpful! Lucy made me feel really comfortable trying on dresses, and we went back two week s later to try on more, and I found the one. I loved the big skirt, and it was easy to move around in. It also had an unusual design whic h I hadn’t seen before, with a sparkly halter neck and open back.

Blessed with glorious weather, Beth and James celebrated their big day at the gorgeous Broadfield Images courtesy of Paul Willetts Photography

REAL WEDDINGS

B

eth and James met at a bar in London. “I was studying at university, and James had recently moved there for a graduate scheme,” says Beth. “We started chatting to each other, exchanged numbers and then met a week later in Covent Garden. That was in 2013, and we’ve been together ever since!” James popped the question during a camping trip in May 2018. “We went to the New Forest, and after setting up our tent, we went for a walk in the countryside,” shares the bride. “As we were walking along, James stopped, looked at me and asked me to marry him! It was a really big surprise, but I immediately said yes! It was my perfect proposal – just the two of us, the sun was shining, and the area was beautiful. That evening we went to a pub for dinner and had a glass of prosecco by the campfire. It was such a happy weekend and one we will never forget.”

SETTING THE SCENE “As soon as James and I got engaged, we knew exactly where we wanted to get married,” explains Beth. “I grew up in Herefordshire and knew Broadfield as a local vineyard. It was the first venue we visited, and straight away James and I were blown away by the beauty of the house and gardens. The house itself was undergoing renovations, but we still loved it and knew it would be the perfect setting for our big day. We love the countryside so really wanted to have a rustic, country wedding and Broadfield fit our theme perfectly. Throughout the whole process, Helen and her team were super helpful. Helen created a full schedule of the day and helped us think of details that hadn’t even occurred to us. On the day itself, Helen was there to make sure everything ran smoothly and everyone was so friendly, which helped us relax!” The happy couple gave their guests wildflower seeds in personalised packets as favours. “Each table was named after a different wine, and we placed bottles on a frame for our table plan,” Beth adds. “We decorated each table with jam jars filled with flowers to complement the milk churns placed at the entrance to the marquee. We also included bunting and paper pompoms in a variety of colours to tie in with our colour scheme.” The flowers were supplied by Stokesay Flowers. “I did a lot of research for florists as we mainly wanted a soft, natural look,” says the bride. “Victoria was really helpful and so knowledgeable. We wanted wildflowers and roses, and she helped us pick colours that complemented each other.” “Our cake was provided by Cathy at The Stables Pantry,” shares Beth. “We had a three-tier design made up of chocolate, lemon and fruit. We wanted a combination of our favourite flavours while also being a little traditional. Having a country wedding, we wanted our design to have a rustic, natural look too. We trusted Cathy as we didn’t know much about cakes and we’re so happy we did. It looked beautiful and tasted incredible!” Beth and James used a local caterer called A to Zest. “For canapés, we had a British sharing board with scotch eggs, porkcrackling straws, sausage rolls, cheese, pickled onions and so on,” explains Beth. “We then went straight onto the main and pudding when we sat down.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I was really nervous about getting my wedding dress,” recalls Beth. “I had an idea of what I wanted, but so many designs looked over the top and too girly. I went to Castle Brides, a local bridal shop that was recommended by a friend. Angela, who owns

the shop, was amazing! She was so helpful and put me at ease straight away. I told her what I was looking for and she picked out a dress that was exactly what I wanted! It was a Maggie Sottero off-the-shoulder design with lace, long sleeves, a medium train and a belt around the waist. I tried on a couple of others but decided that the first dress was the one for me. Angela fitted the dress perfectly and was so attentive throughout the whole process. I felt that the gown had enough detail, and the back was beautifully detailed, so I didn’t wear a veil to help show it off. I accessorised with plain white heels but took them off pretty quickly when the dancing started.” The bride hired Beth Price to do her make-up. “I had a trial with Beth a few months before the wedding and loved the natural look she created,” recalls Beth. “I don’t usually wear a lot of make-up, but she put me at ease and did an amazing job for me and my bridesmaids. My hair was then styled by Tabitha MacCurrachPaine. Since my dress was so detailed I was keen to wear my hair up to show off the neckline. Tabitha tried out a couple of styles, and we picked one that was neat, but also had a natural look. I loved the finished result and was so pleased with how everything fit into the general feel of our day.” James wore a traditional three-piece navy suit from Yardsmen. “His waistcoat was grey, while the groomsmen had navy versions,” adds the bride. “They all chose pale blue ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses and buttonholes with flowers from our bouquets.” “The main colours we used throughout our wedding were blue and yellow,” says Beth. “Having spoken to my bridesmaids we decided on a light blue for their dresses. I chose a multiway design from Victoria Lou Bridal, and the girls loved that they could style it their own way.”

REAL WEDDINGS

TIME TO CELEBRATE To keep everyone entertained, the couple hired Ceilidh Tree. “The band were fantastic and got everyone dancing,” says the bride. “We had planned to have the band perform after the wedding breakfast inside the marquee, however we had glorious sunshine all day, so in a stroke of genius, Ceilidh Tree suggested opening up the side of the marquee and performing outside. They had never done that before, but it worked brilliantly! We took our shoes off and danced on the grass, in the sun, which was just amazing!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I was much more relaxed than James, but then again, I didn’t have a speech to worry about,” shares Beth. “The entire day was exactly how we pictured it. Everyone was so happy and every aspect, from the food to the photographer and band, was perfect.” James and Beth were over the moon with all of their suppliers. “Everyone went above and beyond,” explains the bride. “We were so thrilled with everyone’s work, and I truly believe our day was special because of each supplier and the work they put in. Our photographer, Paul Willetts, was so friendly and helpful. We chose him because we wanted natural looking photos that weren’t too staged, and his style was perfect for us. He took the most amazing photos, and we can’t thank him enough for everything he did. Paul blended into the background so he wasn’t intrusive in any way, which we appreciated, and we can’t recommend him enough to anyone looking for a photographer.” “I think the reason our day had worked so well was that we had a great team behind us helping with everything,” Beth adds. “We fully trusted everyone at Broadfield, our caterers, photographer, florist, cake supplier and band. To anyone planning a wedding, I would say to make sure you’re fully confident in all of your suppliers so that you can trust them to create your perfect day.” 37

REAL WEDDINGS

Truly romantic Natasha and Luke tied the knot at Warwick House surrounded by close family and friends Images courtesy of Ella Parkinson Photography

N

atasha and Luke met 10 years ago through a mutual friend. “Our relationship blossomed, and Luke proposed to me on Christmas Day in 2012,” says Natasha. “I had no idea he was going to pop the question, and shortly after, we found out we were expecting our first child.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

41

We loved everything about Warwick House. Its sleek and modern look was perfect, and we loved that we had the entire venue exclusively for us and our guests were able to stay over. It was also wonderful that we had the option of being able to have our ceremony outside in their beautiful garden. The team made our day so perfect. In a time of restrictions we were worried we wouldn’t have the day we dreamed of, but it exceeded our expectations.

Weddings by KathyB created our stationery using ice white glitter, pink ribbons and crystal embellishments. Luke and I gave Sarah at SugarCraft Studio Cakes all the details of our wedding, and she designed a cake that matched our theme perfectly.

I made our flower arrangements and centrepieces. It was lovely that the bridesmaids and I were able to keep our bouquets as a keepsake. For the décor, we chose blush pink chair sashes, and Warwick House provided some beautiful flowers to dress the stairs with.

42

As a starter, we had beef koftas, the main was roast chicken, and dessert was chocolate profiteroles. In the evening, we had The Wedding Pizza Company serve fresh pizzas in the garden.

REAL WEDDINGS

I fell in love with an Essense of Australia dress called D2835 from Georgina Scott Bridal. It had so many beautiful elements and looked stunning from every angle. The detail on the neckline, the low back with bright sparkly lace detail and the train were exactly what I wanted.

Luke and the groomsmen chose black tuxedos from Next with grey waistcoats. Luke opted for braces and a different lining on the inside of his jacket to help him stand out.

The bridesmaids wore blush pink sequin dresses from ASOS. On the morning of the wedding, we had By Ruth and her make-up team get us ready and they were fantastic. It was so lovely to have them there and be part of our morning.

My dad seeing me in my wedding dress was lovely as I’d never seen him cry before. I also loved the speeches, our first dance and my mum getting me ready.

It was such an uncertain time. We’d already postponed our wedding once, and I was so worried even the day before that something would happen and stop us from going ahead. On the day, we couldn’t really believe it was finally happening and just loved every moment. We had to cut our numbers from 100 to just 30, but it ended up being intimate and amazing celebrating with family after such a long period of restrictions. Having a small wedding really gave us time to absorb and enjoy every second of the day.

The best man told Luke not to turn around when I was walking down the aisle. I ended up stopping and called I’m here, but he still didn’t turn around until the very last second! 43

azaya and Harry met at a house party while attending Birmingham University. “We were both sitting on the couch while everyone else was dancing,” says Mazaya. “We started talking, and the rest is history. I loved how nice and how passionate he was. I also appreciate that he’s very patient and fights for our relationship even though we have so many differences like culture and language.” Harry proposed on Tiger Island, Indonesia, on 1st December, 2019. “We spent two days at an eco-resort where most of the rooms have private access to the ocean,” shares the bride. “He asked me to marry him while we were chilling outside the room watching the sunset. I guessed that he wanted to propose as we’d talked about getting married a few months before, and he asked me to go away for the weekend, and since he doesn’t like travelling, I was a bit suspicious. Regardless, when he kneeled, I cried and, of course, said yes!”

My country has around 1,300 ethnicities in around 30 provinces, and each province has its own traditional wedding dress. It also shows that I’m part of the Java ethnic, particularly from a city called Yogyakarta where my dad comes from.

Each supplier did their job perfectly. The venue, food, drinks, flowers, cake, photographer, hairstylist and dressmaker were amazing and made us feel so lucky and blessed.

We were so happy that we were finally married! Our relationship has been a bit difficult. We’ve been together for over six years now and did two and a half of that long distance. We were supposed to get married in Indonesia in June 2020. Harry lived there with me but returned to the UK to visit his friends and family in February 2020. COVID-19 then got worse, and both our countries closed the borders. It was so frustrating! We were separated for six months before the wedding, while Indonesia’s border was still closed, the UK opened, so we decided to get married here and plan everything last minute.

MEET LISA BETHELL FROM BAKE IT SPECIAL 07923 131 705 | www.ibakeitspecial.co.uk

www.matjamesphotography.co.uk

Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I started making cakes when my children were young as a way of giving them a special creation for their birthdays. It quickly became a hobby, and I wanted to try and develop my skills, so I spent my spare time practising and making them for family. Within a few months, I was being asked for larger and more elaborate designs and took the plunge into my first wedding cake gifted for a friend. I loved the whole creative process and being involved in someone’s special day.

Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? I recommend couples book their key suppliers at least 12 months in advance. Especially if you have your eye on a particular supplier, style or design. We do take bookings up to two years in advance for those who are particularly keen.

Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? I don’t have one favourite wedding cake as they all mean so much to me in different ways. However, sometimes when you are given free creative control, you get the extra bonus of knowing it’s all you, the vision becoming a reality. It’s hard for couples to give you full control, but on the few occasions I get to do it, these are my favourite.

Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? When booking with me, I try to be led by the client in terms of design and wishes, both for the cake and wedding day as a whole. I want them to love the finished result, so I spend a lot of time perfecting recipes and making sample boxes that look and taste as good as possible. Attention to detail is key. I work closely with the couples to create the perfect design with matching colours, flowers and textures.

Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? I love meeting couples and hearing about their plans, designing their cakes and setting up on the day. Seeing the vision become a reality, tying the bake into the venue and décor is the end goal, and when it all works, it’s magical. I want to leave that room knowing the couple will love it when they see it for the first time.

Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? When searching for your cake maker, look at their previous work. Obviously, you want good hygiene, communication, insurance and work ethic, that goes without saying, but for that dream design, look at the details, the finish and reviews from previous clients. You want someone who will understand your vision and be freely available to pursue it. While it’s very much a professional relationship, you want a supplier that you can talk to and get along with, who is open about your ideas, and you ultimately trust to bring it all together. 51

MEET JACKIE DIAMOND FROM JACKIE DIAMOND CAKE DESIGN 07974 041 934 | www.facebook.com/jackiediamondcakes Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? My cake journey started early. I have always loved baking and spent hours with my mum, nan and aunts making all sorts of delicious treats. I got married nine years ago and decided to make my own wedding cake with the help of my aunt, Margaret, which was the start of my journey. I started out making birthday bakes but soon moved onto weddings, which I love. Then seven years ago, I gave up my job as a law clerk to make cakes full time. I can honestly say it was the best thing I’ve ever done. I’ve met some wonderful people over the years, and I get to do something that I really enjoy. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? I aim to take the stress out of choosing a cake and provide couples with a personal service from start to finish. Upon booking, they are supplied with a sample box, that way they can enjoy them at their leisure. I am available to answer any queries or questions by phone or email and to offer advice as required. A consultation is arranged approximately three to four months before the big day, at this stage, the design and flavours can be finalised and a sketch will be provided. I will then arrange with the venue for delivery and staging on the day. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Once the couple has confirmed their date and venue, it’s the best time to book, even if your wedding is 12 to 18 months away. It’s important to get booked in with a cake maker as soon as possible to secure your date. Designs and flavours can be finalised at the consultation three to four months before, and by then, you will have a clear idea of your theme and colours.

Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? My top tip for couples looking for a cake maker is to visit local wedding fairs where you can meet suppliers in person and have the opportunity to chat over your ideas, budget, availability, and you’ll also have the opportunity to see their work and sample some of their bakes. Afterwards, you can check out the ones you like on social media and read their reviews. You can also ask friends and recent brides for word-of-mouth recommendations. 52

Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? This is a difficult one, but I would have to go with the Harry Potter-themed cake that I made for a lovely couple several years ago. Normally Harry Potter has quite bold colours, but liking it to be different, I made it in pastels with lots of detail hand embossed on the tiers.

Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? There’s so much I enjoy about my job, but my favourite part is meeting all the couples and helping them bring their dream cake to life.

CAKES

MEET KAREN TAYLOR FROM CAKES BY KAREN 07751 241 193 | www.cakesbykaren.co.uk Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I began making cakes at a young age for friends and family and helping with the family Christmas cake every year. My favourite and best subjects at school were home economics and art, which helped me with my path towards a decorating course at college. After I had my son in 2004, I decided to set up my business, and it has since gone from strength to strength. I usually make around 70 wedding cakes a year, but this year, I have around 120 booked in.

Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? I have so many favourites; my giant Colin the Caterpillar was great and a real headturner, but I also love a simple plain iced cake with a bit of shimmer. Semi-naked bakes are also a favourite of mine and are very popular.

Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? I would advise couples to book in with as much notice as possible, especially for the summer months where I get booked up quickly. Even if you’re unsure of what size/style of cake you would like, I can still take your booking.

Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? I can arrange a consultation to discuss ideas and sample a few flavours, and I will also offer design advice and listen to your ideas. I will keep in touch throughout the planning process to make sure everything runs smoothly. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Seeing the cake finished and set up at the venue fitting in with all the room’s décor. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Do your research, look at examples of their work and reviews. Ask friends and family for recommendations. A lot of my customers come from word of mouth. 55

MEET SALLY YARNOLD FROM DON’T GO BAKING MY HEART CAKES bakinghearts@hotmail.com | www.instagram.com/bakinghearts_cakes Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I have always enjoyed baking since I was very young. I can remember making our Christmas cakes every year as a family, all excited to take our turn stirring the mixture and making a wish. As I got older, I started to make family and friends celebration bakes and eventually decided to take it more seriously and started evening classes after work to learn how to decorate. As day-to-day life continued, my cake dreams lingered in the background and were brought to life every now and again for a niece or nephew’s birthday. Fast forward several years, one day, while on maternity leave, my oldest daughter told me how much she loved having me at home with her. That was the moment everything changed. I was going to stop dreaming and start a business. I wanted to show my children that it’s okay to dream, but if you want your dreams to come true, you have to work hard to make them happen. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? My main aim is to provide couples with a beautiful bespoke creation that tastes and looks amazing. I love to take the time to find out about them and, if possible, incorporate a sentimental element into the design. It’s this that ensures my cakes are completely bespoke, and no one else has had that design. I really feel that weddings should be filled with sentimental touches to make the day the most special it could possibly be.

Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is also the most important, the couples. Speaking with them is so much fun, and I love hearing their stories of how they met and the proposal. I get to really connect with them. Some brides want the lace or sparkle on their dresses incorporated into the cake design, so I’m sent photographs of their dresses before their loved ones have seen them. To be trusted in that way is something I’m so grateful for. There’s no bigger honour than being a part of making someone’s wedding day perfect, and as a wedding supplier, that’s my main focus. 56

Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? Seven years ago, I made my wedding cake. It was five tiers high, decorated with my favourite sugar flowers and flavours. It isn’t my favourite because it was my most beautiful design, as I was still learning, the tiers were short, the edges weren’t perfectly sharp as they are now, and the flowers were basic, to say the least. My nan used to make cakes, and by the time I became interested, she was no longer with us, but the fact I have this connection to her is something I will embrace forever. When she died, I was given a piece of her jewellery which I copied onto the cake’s design and wore on the day. These little touches are the things that make your cake so much more than a cake. This design will never be my most beautiful, but it will always be the one closest to my heart.

Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? It’s never too early and to avoid disappointment it’s a good idea to book your suppliers as soon as you know you want them. I’ve recently taken bookings for Q – Do you have 2023, however, anything from six months to a year any top tips for is ample time. couples looking for a cake maker? Always make sure you meet your cake maker, whether it be face-to-face or via video call. I think it’s important to make sure you gel well and build a good relationship. Make sure they understand fully what you want from the design. I always relay our conversation to my couples and ask if they feel like I understand their needs. Trying flavours is a must as you need to make sure it tastes as good as it looks! Ask for tasters, and when you get them, also look at how they’re presented as the little details are really important. Booking isn’t just about what arrives on the day, but the whole service provided needs to make you feel taken care of.

TOPIC: wedding worries Our experts solve your problems

www.saralejon.com

HOT SUMMER LOVING Q – We’re getting married next July and are hoping to book our florist. What flowers and colours are popular at that time of year? July is when British grown flowers really hit their stride, so if you’re looking for seasonal blooms, there is a lovely variety to choose from. Most colour schemes are easy to accommodate, whether it’s a classic cream and blush or a festival wedding in bright jewel tones. One hue that can be a bit tricky is blue. Many flowers tend to be on the lilac spectrum rather than a true blue, but in July, you may be able to get blue Nigella (Love in a Mist) and agapanthus. In recent years, I’ve seen a resurgence of colourful weddings, but restrained pastels haven’t gone away either, so like every other aspect of your wedding, you’re free to do it your way. Sadly peony season will be over by July, but there are so many other options. British grown flowers naturally available include roses, snapdragons, sunflowers, cosmos daisies, dahlias in every shape and colour (except blue!), lavender, sweet peas, and this is just a fraction of the loveliness available. Any good florist can advise you on what will suit your style and colours. Don’t worry about being an expert on flowers - that’s what they’re there to help you with! Carole Patilla | Florist | www.tuckshopflowers.com

COUNTING THE PENNIES Q – We want lovely photographs but are limited by our budget. Do you have any suggestions on how to save money? Start by finding a photographer within your budget. Average wedding photography for a full day can be around £1,200 in the UK, so plan your budget accordingly to ensure you get the best. Book early. Photographers usually have an early booking discount if you contact them a couple of years in advance. If you find a suitable photographer, but they’re out of budget, ask them to reduce the coverage. For example, instead of covering from preparation to the end, you can ask them to cover from the ceremony up to the cutting of the cake. Less time means there will be fewer photos overall and should therefore be cheaper. Another way to reduce the cost is to ask for an online gallery rather than a printed version. It can save up to £500, depending on the album prices. Most photographers offer a discount to couples who have been referred by previous clients. Daniel Raad | Photographer | www.raadphotography.com 58

PLANNING SOS Q – Our wedding has been postponed due to COVID-19, and we need to book a new photographer. What do you suggest we ask before booking? We’ve all had to adapt and be more flexible after so many postponements. If you have no choice but to move your wedding date, most photographers should be happy to reschedule, providing they’re available. Here are a few key questions to ask: ♥ What is your policy if we’re required to postpone our wedding due to the pandemic? ♥ Will there be any changes in price if we are postponing to the following year? ♥ What is your policy regarding deposits in the event that you’re not available on the date we would like to postpone to? ♥ It’s also important to check what the photographer’s backup plan is if they were to fall ill on your wedding day. Like myself, most suppliers will have a network of fellow photographers that they can contact if they’re unable to shoot your wedding. ♥ When you’re ready to book, your photographer should send you a contract to complete. Always read the content carefully before signing, and don’t worry about asking any questions if you are uncertain about what the terms mean. EXPERT ADVICE

THE LOOK OF LOVE

Angus Baskerville | Magician www.angusbaskerville.com

Eve and Jason Reeves | Photographers | www.shepherdphotography.co.uk

www.weddingphotographyinshropshire.co.uk

MAGICAL MOMENTS Q – We’re thinking of booking a magician for our big day. What questions should we ask before booking? Magic is a great icebreaker and will ensure your guests feel included on their special day, even if they have come on their own and know nobody. When is the best time to use a magician’s services? That depends on the style of your wedding and the ambience you wish to create. A magician can mingle amongst the guests while the couples are having their photos taken and perform close up magic at the tables during the wedding breakfast and before the speeches. What should we expect to pay? It’s always important to have a rough budget. Put together as much detail as possible about the number of guests, the venue, age ranges attending etc. Your supplier can then come up with a bespoke option that will work for you. Sometimes less is more! Lots of magicians offer packages that can be costly and cover the whole afternoon and into the evening proceedings. However, I always aim to be as flexible as possible and meet the clients’ needs and can perform for shorter periods if required. Do we have to pay travel costs? Always ask this question as you may think you’re getting a certain rate, but there may be costs to pay on top if your magician has to travel. We would like music and magic at different stages of the proceedings. Can you do a combined package? It’s worth asking as some magicians and musicians can collaborate to cover the day. When the musician needs a break, the magician can take over, and vice versa. This all depends on your budget and the order of proceedings. Why should we hire a magician? Magic is always a winner – whether your wedding is an intimate affair or a large scale extravaganza! Just remember to brief your magician, so that you can leave them to it on the day – you may even have VIP guests to who you would like to have extra special attention. Anything is possible!

Q – My wife-to-be wants to book a pre-wedding shoot. Is it worth the money, and what should we expect? We love a pre-wedding shoot! It’s a great opportunity for you to work with your photographer before the big day, especially if you’re feeling a little apprehensive about having your picture taken. You can choose the perfect location; it could be where you first met, a favourite place or a relaxed walk around your local park. It’s a great chance to chat about your wedding plans as they snap away. Throughout the shoot and your wedding day, we love to capture natural shots that show who you are as a couple. A pre-wedding shoot is a lovely way to prepare, as we get the chance to see how you are in front of the camera, and we can even guide you on how to pose if need be. The photographs taken can be made into a signing board or guest book for your wedding guests to leave well wishes.

THE ONE FOR ME Q – We’re a bit camera shy and are feeling anxious about having our picture taken on our wedding day. Do you have any tips to help us look relaxed in the pictures? Firstly, everyone is a bit nervous in front of the camera, it’s totally normal to feel a bit anxious. The biggest thing you can do to help with this is to choose a photographer who puts you at ease and makes you feel comfortable. Have a chat before the wedding to go over any worries, and they will be able to help you. It might be worth having a pre-wedding shoot too, this is a short photo session before the wedding, which will help you get used to having your photo taken. The main thing is to relax and trust your photographer. They will put you in the best light, guide you through any poses and help you look relaxed. Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

L

ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup

plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and overbudgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.

THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers and budget, we began the exciting part – looking 60

at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY

Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.

Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.

Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.

We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.

Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!

This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 61

hen these images first landed in our inbox, we just knew our lovely readers would adore them. We spoke to Jenny Morgan from Chocolate Falls to find out more about how this shoot came together: “I’ve always had a passion for Gothic styling and loved the idea of combining contrasting popular themes to create a slightly alternative but elegant display. A very close friend of mine is a medium and white witch who practices pagan rituals, which I find fascinating, so we merged the two and romanticised it into a wedding setup. I envisaged a shoot where there was a Gothic presence but softened with touches of nature which incorporated the Pagan rituals perfectly. I’ve built relationships with several suppliers over the years who are all incredibly talented in their particular fields, and each possesses a creative flair which allowed us to showcase our artistic range.” 63

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

NATURAL BEAUTY

Q – I don’t usually wear any make-up but want to look gorgeous on my big day. What products and styles do you suggest I go for? We have so many brides that either don’t wear make-up or a very small amount day-to-day, so they come to their trial unclear of what they want and all say the same thing ‘I still want to look like me.’ It’s about emphasising your natural beauty and helping you feel comfortable and confident. If you’re going for a minimal look, you might want to focus on your skin in the run-up to the wedding. If it’s healthy, radiant and glowing, then you may feel as though you need less coverage. I always recommend a trial to all my brides, especially if you’re not used to wearing any products. Eyes – I’d always recommend a soft, neutral look. If you’re not used to wearing black liner, then I’d try out a brown version as black can be quite a harsh hue. With regards to lashes, I tend to point my brides towards cluster lashes just placed on the outer corner of the eye, so it really opens them up without using a strip lash. Base – For those of you who don’t wear foundation, start with a tinted moisturiser and add to the base until you’re happy with the coverage. All artists have a variety of products for different skin tones and required coverage. A light blush can be added to enhance your natural beauty, and when paired with a subtle highlighter looks beautiful. Lips – On the morning of the wedding, I always give my clients a lip scrub followed by a balm that I keep applying until it’s their turn in the chair. This primes and moisturises the lips ready for make-up. Most of my brides tend to enhance their natural colour with a similar shade or a simple peachy shimmer gloss. The Anastasia Peachy Gloss is popular amongst my clients as it has a little shimmer and looks gorgeous on camera. Work with your supplier until you’re happy, and don’t forget it’s your big day, and you need to feel comfortable with your look. Laura Timms Mowinski | Hair and make-up artist www.facebook.com/lauratimmsmowisnki 88

HAIR GODDESS

Q – I have medium-length hair that tends to have a mind of its own. What styles do you suggest to help it stay in place on the big day? Sometimes finding the right products is the answer to controlling your hair. Having a trial is very important for every bride, especially if your locks are hard to control. Your stylist should be able to advise on ways to manage your tresses and also find a style that will last throughout the day. For example, if you have fine, whispy, flyaway hair, then embrace it and go for a low bun with pieces of hair falling from it. Incorporating fresh flowers is stunning and will add a more natural look. If you have curly locks, sometimes re-curling it along with a curling product will help structure it, so it’s more defined and easier to put into an up do. You will need to be careful with any styles that are half up or all down as it’s much harder to control. Claire Harmer | Hair and make-up artist www.claireharmerbeauty.co.uk

WELLNESS

The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY

We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com

#FRESHSTART Bored with hot water and lemon in the morning? Then maybe it’s time for a Fresh Start with Pukka’s newest caffeine-free organic tea. Expertly blended with sustainablysourced organic herbs, delicious zesty organic lemon and warming aromatic fennel seeds, it gently awakens your body and mind to a new day helping you feel your brightest self. What’s more, this stimulating yet soothing blend helps to strengthen the digestive system to support optimum metabolism. Priced at £2.99 for 20 sachets, it’s available at https://uk.pukkaherbs.com, and from health food stores and supermarkets across the land.

#FindYourInnerCalm Designed to accompany ESPA’s sensorial collection of Signature Blends, the Aromatic Essential Oil Diffuser, £85, harnesses the harmonising power of aromatherapy to nurture your wellbeing. Whether you want to wind down and relax, improve your focus, lift your spirits or lull yourself to sleep, the diffuser’s ultrasonic vibrations humidify the atmosphere and disperse your choice of precious natural essential oils by releasing the perfect amount of fragrant vapour into your home. Find it at www.espaskincare.com

#ThePowerOfSleep Given the trials of the last year, looking after ourselves at home has never been more important, so to help with this endeavour, The Somerset Toiletry Company has created a collection of gifts to promote self-care and wellness and we’re all about its Sleepeze range. After all, the importance of sleep when it comes to ultimate wellbeing can never be underestimated, it’s crucial for body and mind. The Sleepeze Calming Gift Set, £9.95, includes a silky eye mask, pillow mist, and essential oil-based rollerball. Then there’s the Calming Sleep Stones, £11.95 – 200g of volcanic rock infused with essential oils to enhance your night-time routine. Finally, in the collection is the Calming Bath Salts, £4.95, perfect for washing away that build up of daily stress before bed. Treat yourself at www.thesomersettoiletryco.co.uk

#SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com 89

SILKY SMOOTH

I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my super-cute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

MAKING

waves

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks

92

INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.

A

ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs eventready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.

I would say, start with the neckline of your desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.

If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their big-day, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.

What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.

Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.

How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.

What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.

What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.

How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?

What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 93

Sark is the smallest of the Channel Islands and considered the jewel of them all. Already famous for several things; its unspoilt beauty, for having no cars and for being the world’s first Dark Skies Island, it now welcomes a new attraction. The tiny island is celebrating the imminent launch of its first community dairy. From this June, no trip to this stunning rural island hideaway will be complete without meeting the 16 stunning Guernsey dairy cows, seeing the dairy parlour in action and picking up treats from the shop. At the helm are dairy farmers Jason and Katharine Salisbury, who, with 20 years’ experience of looking after Channel Island dairy cows in Suffolk, harboured a longheld dream of running their own small artisanal farm in Sark. From 80 applicants worldwide the Salisburys bagged their dream job, combining authentic dairy farming with providing a delightful destination where you can visit and be charmed. The island enjoys a variety of accommodation options from glamping to luxury hotels and everything in between. For self-catering the beautiful Clos a Joan rental cottages are a must-visit (www.sarkholidaycottages.co.uk) or, for a touch of honeymoon luxury, check out Stocks Hotel (www.stockshotel.com).
