s I write this, we are two weeks clear of Freedom Day: July the 19th – I think this date is now etched in our memories forever more. Yes, it was wonderful to finally be able to hug, see friends and family, go to a restaurant with more than a carefully selected group of six loved ones; but for me, the most important thing: weddings were back! For 18 months I watched as an industry I loved – and have worked in for 18 years – was brought to a grinding halt, and without dwelling too much on it now we’re through the other side, it was an emotional roller-coaster for all involved. Now, we can look to the future, and go back to the excitement of what it means to plan and attend weddings: get those dancing shoes out, brush off those dance moves and get ready to p.a.r.t.y on that wedding dancefloor like you’ve never partied before. This issue feels like a true celebration of local venues and suppliers, we have a host of hotels over on page 15, a fab selection of local handmade items over on page 57 and there’s a bunch of talented suppliers helping you look your big-day best on page 79! Also check out our gorgeous real weddings this issue, honestly, I can never choose a favourite, they’re over on pages 29, 34 and 41. YOUR ESSENTIALS BESIDE THE SEASIDE
McCarthy Stone (www.mccarthyandstone. co.uk) surveyed 2,700 people to find which of the most popular seaside towns came out as the UK’s favourite ‒ and our very own Yorkshire coast has come third! Blessed with ample countryside and also glorious coastline, Yorkshire not surprisingly ranks highly-voted, with Salcombe in Devon ranking at number one, Weymouth in Dorset took second place and our very own Whitby, North Yorkshire taking third! As this picture shows, it’s a fantastic destination for a pre-wedding photo shoot or a post-wedding getaway.
LET’S GET TOGETHER

TEMPTING TREATS
Huts off to you
Hornington Manor, a North Yorkshire wedding venue, has welcomed eight themed Shepherd Huts to add to its accommodation offering. Perfect for big-day guests, or newlyweds post-vows looking for a staycation retreat, each hut takes inspiration from Yorkshire and beyond with themes ranging from Arabia to the 1940s. The huts offer escapism to guests by portraying exciting new locations and eras. The first hut, The Fenton, takes its name from an aerodrome just outside of Hornington, which served as a frontline fighter station in the 1940s. This hut is embellished with memorabilia of wartime Britain, including artwork of the country’s finest planes; while The Egyptologist hut is inspired by Yorkshireman and writer George Sandys, one of the first to suggest that the pyramids may be great tombs. The hut is influenced by treasures and artefacts found in the country. This is just two of the inspiring themes that guests can enjoy. Each bespoke hut can sleep two people in a luxury king-size Harrison Spinks bed, and comes complete with a television, kitchenette, wifi, an en suite with shower and breathtaking views. THE GRAND, YORK 01904 380 038 | www.thegrandyork.co.uk As the name suggests, The Grand, York is one of the most impressive and iconic buildings in the city. Formerly the headquarters of the wealthy North Eastern Railway Company, the Grade II listed Edwardian building is bursting with architectural features including striking gable detailing and a bold gabled centrepiece. Only the best materials were used in its construction in 1906 including Huddlestone stone from a local quarry, an area which provided much of the limestone for York Minster. Offering views of the iconic City Walls which once enclosed the whole of York, The Courtyard provides the perfect setting for an alfresco reception. The Courtyard was beautifully renovated in 2021 to include a dedicated bar and barn for cosy evening events. The wonderful event spaces present stunning original features and
sweeping stone staircases and wide arched corridors lead to tastefully appointed bedrooms. Both the Grand Boardroom and Chairman’s Suite are licensed to hold wedding ceremonies. T
homas Courtney and Hannah White met when they were teenagers working part time in a local pizza shop, Sugar Ray’s in Doncaster. “After working together for a year or so, Tom asked me to go to a circuit class that he was helping out with,” recalls Hannah. “I was so embarrassed at the thought of exercising in front of him that I made up an excuse as to why I couldn’t make it. A few weeks after this he asked me to go to the cinema with him and this was the start of becoming official.” During the summer of 2015, Tom proposed to Hannah at her family home with her mum and sister present. “He had kept it a secret from everyone and I arrived home from work one day to him suited and booted, our song playing in the background, candles lit and him on one knee!” shares Hannah. “I also dropped to my knee in sheer disbelief. I could not believe that he was asking me. All I remember was asking him over and over ‘Me? Are you sure?’.” The wedding date was set for 18th October, 2018, with Cusworth Hall providing the ceremony backdrop and the reception venue was The Old Brewhouse within the estate’s grounds. Here, Hannah tells us more about their day... 27

orreh Khatibi and Alex Hill met while working at a Young Offenders Institute, where Dorreh taught young men, and Alex worked as an officer. “The first time I met Alex, he was in a classroom with another teacher and was being cheeky, with an infectious smile and was laughing at his own jokes!” recalls Dorreh. After a long dating process, with a few bumps in the road, they fell in love, found their dream home and dream jobs, and Dorreh had a ready-made family, “It’s been a journey for me and Quinn, Alex’s daughter, however we’ve made a very strong bond and she’s the most adorable thing in my life and was my sweet flowergirl.” Alex popped the question on Dorreh’s birthday on 23rd December, 2018. “I sort of knew he was going to ask as we’d been talking about getting married,” recalls Dorreh. “Alex had recently found out about my grandmother’s ring which she had passed on to me two days before she died. We went to Gino’s in Leeds for my birthday and the waiter brought over a drink on a plate that had written on it “Will you marry me?”. Alex then took out the ring and put it on my finger. He had called my dad on the day to ask him for permission which meant a lot to me. “We decided to get married straight away, however it took us about two years to find a venue and to decide where we want to get married.” After lots of decision making and wedding planning, the big date fell on 3rd January 2020, with The Coniston Hotel providing the perfect backdrop.
SETTING THE SCENE Although Dorreh, who is of Iranian heritage, originally wanted to marry by the water abroad, the couple decided to get married in the UK. “We saw a few venues in the Lake District and even booked one provisionally for six weeks. However, I came across The Coniston Hotel and we instantly fell in love. It was Christmas time and they had decorations up and it just looked so magical, with the most beautiful lake outside the hotel.” Due to Dorreh’s teaching profession, the pair tied the knot in January during the Christmas holidays, meaning they could utilise the Christmas decorations that would still be up and she could spend time with her family who were travelling from Iran. For the finer details Dorreh chose big white orchids to complement her elegant satin wedding dress; while the bridesmaids had small bouquets of white roses and greenery. White flowers featured throught, including in the centrepieces which were floral displays decorating candelabra. “To add a Persian feel to the wedding we had the cake made by an Iranian lady,” shares Dorreh. “It was a three-tier white cake with white orchid and roses, in a banana and vanilla flavour.” 33

REAL WEDDINGS
The classic colour scheme was incorporated into the tableplan and place name settings; which were white card with flowers attached to napkins with a ribbon. For guest favours, the couple gave mini succulent plants in a clay pot, “We also had some Persian favours which were sugar coated almonds on a stick and crystal sugars on a stick with a ribbon which symbolises sweetness of the day,” adds Dorreh. Other venue décor comprised a sweet cart, diamanté backdrops and drapes from the ceiling for a relaxed luxe feel. The chairs on the aisle had fresh greenery tied to them, and luckily the Christmas decoration at the hotel were neutral complementing the wedding theme. “We also had Persian décor which was part of the ceremony; a Persian carpet on the floor, white boxes with lights, lots of candles, flowers in tall vases, sweets, pomegranate, honey, bread, a mirror and candelabras. Each item symbolises something, for example the mirror is there for the bride and the groom to look at each other in the mirror and the candles bring light into their life, the sweets bring sweetness, the bread so you always have food on your table and so on.”
LOOKING THE PART Dorreh wore a white satin dress Aludra by Sophia Tolli, which she had seen on a local bridal shop’s Instagram page. “I instantly fell in love with it. I went to the shop to try it on and my mum said this is the one. It made me look quite tall (my husband is 6ft2” and I’m 5ft2”) and it was elegant and stunning. I wore a Jon Richard tiara and veil from Debenhams which complemented the detail on the dress and a fur coat from Monsoon. I wore bepsoke stud diamond and emerald earrings made by a famous jeweller in Iran, Azalia Mozafarian. My shoes were also green to coordinate with the earrings and the bridesmaids’ dresses.” Alex and the rest of the groomsmen wore black suits by Owen Scott (a tailor to celebrities), with white shirts and black ties and shoes. The suits complemented the emerald green chiffon bridesmaids’ dresses which were long and featured an open back and bow.
TIME TO CELEBRATE To entertain their guests, Dorreh and Alex had a DJ playing a mix of Persian and English music to reflect both of their heritages. “People love Persian music!” says Dorreh. On the day, the bride recalls a whole host of emotions. “It was magical!” she says. “I cried from the minute I put on my dress, and throughout the ceremony. Alex felt excited, nervous and apprehensive as he couldn’t wait to see what I looked like. Alex adds, ‘What stood out for me was you!’.” Although they thought the whole day and evening was amazing, a few standout moments include: “My sister-in-law read out an old Persian text to ask me and Alex if we accept each other as husband and wife, and also our husband and wife speeches,” adds Dorreh, “It was great that my brother and friends had come from Iran, Australia and Cyprus; and the venue and Sharon who was our wedding coordinator, were both lovely. Also our photographer, Matt Nicholls, who told me to back off in the morning and try to relax and let him do his job and he did a fantastic job, he was funny and made us feel at ease. And the dream sisters, Jade and Beth, who were my make-up artist and hairstylist, they were so calm, I wanted to keep them with me all day to remind me not to stress!” 35
TOP TIP: “It’s never too early to start the wedding planning! Take yourself away on the morning to relax. I had too many people around me and although it was lovely, it made me feel very nervous and I couldn’t relax.”

REAL WEDDINGS
Festival vibes Lianne and Wayne created the ultimate day to celebrate their love Images courtesy of Photos by Kathryn
L
ianne Orrell and Wayne Ellison met in modern fashion online! After talking and finding it particularly easy to talk to each other they found they had plenty in common; liking the same bands and love going to music festivals, they soon met in person. Fast-forward two years, the couple were on holiday in Calpe, Spain, on their second anniversary where Wayne popped the all-important question to an unsuspecting Lianne. “I had it all planned. I asked the in-laws’ permission before we set off and had to hide the ring in our shared luggage,” recalls Wayne. “I found the perfect restaurant, La
Vine De Calpe, and rang ahead – they were really excited about it. They set the table up really nice for us, although that made Lianne a bit suspicious and I told her it’s for our anniversary. The plan was to have the ring out on the table when Lianne left for the toilet, but I think she was so suspicious of something that she never left, so I went for plan B and popped the question there and then.” The wedding date was set, 7th September 2019 ‒ three years exactly from the engagement – with The Woodman Inn, Thunderbridge setting the scene. Here we find out more about their special day from Lianne... 39
The bridesmaids wore champagne-coloured dresses in a flowing style from House of Fraser.
We had to find somewhere big enough for the number of guests, but that had a cosy feel to it. As soon as we walked in The Woodman Inn we were greeted with a drink and a smile and it felt right. Our wedding was split across Thunderbridge Gardens and the pub venue which worked really well as it provided a change of scenery for our day guests. We had a festival theme for the evening and the atmosphere was just like being at a gig with our band, Loaded from Barnsley, playing indie anthems to a packed dancefloor.
A big factor was having our dog with us and The Woodman Inn had no problem with that.
Flowers were everywhere, we had a traditional, neutral style for the flowers to complement the country vibe during the day ‒ most guests took some home with them! 40
Our centrepieces were designed and arranged by the florist so the theme ran throughout.
REAL WEDDINGS The cake was provided by Cakes By Lynda from Doncaster. Wayne knew her having worked with her in the past and there was no one else we’d rather use. Her cakes are delicious!
People’s names were on wooden hearts which were wrapped with string around the napkins. Our maid-of-honour, Hayley, came to the rescue at the last minute and did a great job of making these look good. I wore a dress by Nicole Spose which was provided by Dotty Bridal in Holmfirth. After trying more than 30 dresses it was a big relief to find the perfect dress. When I walked into the boutique, I wanted to be a Dotty’s bride – the staff couldn’t do enough to make you feel welcome and comfortable!
Tip: Just enjoy it. Take a moment for yourselves. Get involved with everyone and have a great time!
I stayed at Holmfirth Vinyard the evening before and hired a retro VW Campervan to kick off the day with a festival vibe. The top table was One Day Like This with other tables named after some of our favorite songs such as You’re Not Nineteen Forever, Common People, Champagne Supernova to name a few. We tried to mix it up a bit so everyone got to know each other, and provided plenty of drink to help people on their way.
Music was playing throughout the day, and the sun was shining down making a great atmosphere. Between the wedding breakfast and evening do we had Mark Waddington, a local magician. He went down a treat attracting large groups of people. He interacted with people really well, making our guests laugh as well as impressing with his magic tricks. We couldn’t have asked for more from him.
The venue provided all of the catering; there was hardly a crumb left the food there is brilliant.
41
Wayne wore a deep-blue suit with champagne-colour gold detail. The groomsmen wore the same suit with different detail, and they were all provided by Slaters Menswear.
We had a photo booth with great props but the highlight of the night was the band who really capped an amazing day. One of the highlights of the wedding was seeing everyone on the dance floor singing and having a great time. We felt calm on the day, as the venue did everything they could to keep us at ease and we were surrounded by our favourite people.
We moved over to the pub venue for the evening do where everyone was greeted by a spectacular shot bar provided by The Woodman Inn. This was definitely the turning point for us as everyone insisted we have a shot with them! We had more than enough sambuca and tequila to start the night.
The father-of-the-bride’s speech went down really well and got lots of laughs.
We went into the woods for photos with Kathryn, our photographer, which was a nice break from the day. We could spend a bit of time together and gather our thoughts before heading back for our meal.

hat’s not to love about this gorgeously styled, woodland shoot? “The initial idea and theme that we wanted for our shoot was: woodland luxe,” shares shoot coordinators Erika and Sam from Tweedle Floral Design. “For our bridal vision we really wanted to project a true ‘queen of the forest’, creating an overall feel of something enchanted and whimsical.” With a moodboard consisting of golds, lots of greenery, boho lace, deep and bold pops of purples and pinks, the vision soon came to life with the duo believing it reflected its floristry brand well. “The shoot came together so perfectly with the team of suppliers that joined us, especially Anna Beth Photography. As soon as we found her style of photography we knew that she would capture all our creative work to such a beautiful standard.”

his styled shoot was coordinated to inspire positivity, happiness and hope, the brainchild of Gemma Suckley Photography, Joanne Lawrence Photography and Aphelion Events. “This wasn’t any normal shoot!” shares the team. “To ensure we really lived up to our aim to inspire, we were fortunate to have real life power couple, Riona Kelly and Keith Mason, gracing the set. Keith, an ex-professional rugby player and actor, and Riona have recently made headlines with their motivational TikToks documenting Riona’s recovery from a rare spinal stroke. Not only did they look the part, but their infectious positivity spread across the team – making it a truly memorable experience.” A palette of pastel pinks and deep ochres created a sense of vibrancy and romance, while upholding a grounding and relaxing tone. “We used handpicked seasonal florals to adorn the set, with complementary fabrics and props that gave the venue a delightful boho feel that simply oozes romance and joy,” adds the team. “Combine this with stunning gowns and timeless make-up, Riona made for a breathtaking bride who really showed us that anything is possible, with a little hope and lots of determination.”

LOCAL BUSINESSES
KATE FEARNLEY We chat to Kate Fearnley of Stokesley’s Kate Fearnley bridal boutique... What does your company offer for weddings and what’s your background? After graduating with a degree in fashion from Northumbria University in 1999, I launched my brand in Middlesbrough in 2002, and was based on Linthorpe Road until 2021. I’ve won many awards including ‘Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year’ award from Cosmopolitan magazine in 2010 and was awarded the national title of Best Wedding Dress Designer award at the 2019 and 2020 Wedding Industry Awards and was also awarded the title of Outstanding Customer Service in the Bridal and Occasion wear Category at The North of England Wedding Awards. What is the most popular product you offer for weddings? We offer ready to wear and bespoke wedding dresses, veils, illusion shoes and all bridal party. All designed and made from our North Yorkshire studio and showroom. I
find that a fuller skirt and pockets seems to be a popular design silhouette we offer in our collections. Why is it important that couples choose local suppliers and products for their wedding? We should now more than ever be supportive of local suppliers. I think it makes it even more special that the items you choose to create your wedding day are slightly more unique than what you would possibly find on the internet or from huge brands. Most local suppliers will have a highly recommended local supplier list that they have worked with which I think always helps. What style/theme of wedding do you love designing for the most? Kate Fearnley designs are for the modern bride searching for a unique and stylish look. We tend to find our designs suit and are worn at the less formal themed weddings such at barn venues and other interesting alternative locations; soft lighting, greenery, relaxed yet sophisticated. Kate Fearnley, Kate Fearnley, www.katefearnley.com Get social: @katefearnleybridal 55
THE BOBBY PIN We chat to Lisa Steane of Bradford’s The Bobby Pin... What does your company offer for weddings and what’s your background? The Bobby Pin was established in 2016 and we are proud to create the most incredibly beautiful accessories for modern brides with a love of sparkle: luxe hair vines, pins, clips, headpieces, and jewellery. The Bobby Pin embodies femininity, elegance, and luxury, with affordable accessories perfect for any bride’s style. Keen to remain top of the bridal accessory game, our on-point collections are continuously being updated and adapted to reflect current fashion trends and leading big-day looks. What is the most popular product you offer for weddings? Our most popular product this season has been the Tiggy vine (pictured far right), this floral hair vine has been a showstopper and is available in blush and silver, it also has matching pieces Tamara and Tia for bridesmaids too. Why is it important that couples choose local suppliers and products for their wedding? I think it is important for people to choose local suppliers as these can usually be recommended by other local suppliers in the wedding industry and that means they can be trusted. Also, if you are local to the region, it is easier to deal with any unforeseen circumstances as they can be resolved faster due to being more local.
MY BILLET DOUX We chat to Natalia Willmot of York’s My Billet Doux... What does your company offer for weddings and what’s your background? My Billet Doux offers handmade luxury cushions to be used for presenting the rings at the wedding ceremony, sending a love note, keeping the vows and/or sending/giving a piece of jewellery. They are made with antique and vintage ribbons and the most beautiful fabrics and silks. I was lucky to spend seven years in London working with a high end textile and costume dealer which gave me an eye for quality and beautiful pieces. As I’m creating a keepsake for my clients all my creations are made with an attention to detail and pieces I have collected for a long time.
What style/theme of wedding do you love designing for the most? I have been so lucky to deal with the most amazing brides this year after a very hard 2020. My brides all have different wants and needs, and our vast collection means we can generally cater for most styles needed for brides looking for accessories Lisa Steane, The Bobby Pin, www.thebobbypin.co.uk Get social: www.instagram.com/thebobbypinuk
What is the most popular product you offer for weddings? Our cushion Pensée has been popular and is made in a limited edition – it comes in different colourways to go with many themes. It’s also made with an exquisite1920s white jacquard with embroidery and trapunto in gold French ribbon. Why is it important that couples choose local suppliers and products for their wedding? I value meeting the couple so much as I want to provide a unique and special experience to be remembered. Choosing local means you can meet the suppliers face to face and create that important connection so that they can help make your day special. What style/theme of wedding do you love designing for the most? My dream customer loves romance and loves vintage and antique pieces and appreciates the quality of my pieces. My dream customer wants to give something special to their other half and create a moment to be cherished forever Natalia Willmott, My Billet Doux, www.mybilletdoux.com Get social: www.instagram.com/mybilletdoux

LOCAL BUSINESSES BUNNY LOVES EVIE We chat to Kelly Earp of York’s Bunny Loves Evie... What does your company offer for weddings and what’s your background? We design and hand make a range of enchanting and slightly alternative wedding accessories with a vintage and boho twist. We have been creating our pieces for more than10 years and can create something special for all kinds of bridal styles and requests. www.ellensear.co.uk
What is the most popular product you offer for weddings? Our most popular product this year has been our handbeaded blossom floral hairpins which we can create in a variety of colours. I think these have www.photography-by-petrina.co.uk
been so popular as they are perfect for any time of year (as we can change the colour) and they also work so well in so many different types of hairstyle. They’ve been a perfect accessory for the many micro weddings we’ve seen take place this year too, as they can be bought and stored in case of a date change. Why is it important that couples choose local suppliers and products for their wedding? I think it’s great if couples can choose local suppliers for their big day. Not only does it boost the local economy but you cannot beat being able to pop along to have a chat with someone to discuss your needs and build a relationship with your supplier, which is slightly more difficult to do if they are further away. What style/theme of wedding do you love designing for the most? I love creating pieces for all styles of weddings. I think its hard to choose a favourite! But I do love a slightly Gothic, alternative wedding where you can create something really different. I worked on a wedding piece last year which was an alternative 1920s shoot and I was in my element. I love working with brides who want something a little bit bold and different, especially with a big pair of statement earrings to really stand out from the crowd! JOSHUA JAMES JEWELLERY We chat to Shannon Mugford of Joshua James Jewellery... What does your company offer for weddings and what’s your background? Since 2019, Joshua James has offered a beautiful array of wedding accessories including delicate bridal jewellery and sophisticated male pieces from big brands such as Thomas Sabo and Swarovski. Our brand has also recently set up a new bespoke ring service which allows couples or individuals to design their dream wedding ring(s) down to the very last detail. A luxury service that adds to the magic of organising a wedding. What is the most popular product you offer for weddings? Our most popular products for weddings would have to be from our personalised jewellery collection. Most often, a bride or wedding guest will add a heartfelt message onto a necklace or a bracelet before gifting it to someone from the wedding party. This makes for a really special sentiment to such an important day. Why is it important that couples choose local suppliers and products for their wedding? By supporting small and local businesses, you are supporting the owner’s livelihood, as well as their family’s. Additionally, you will most likely find truly one-of-a-kind pieces that you won’t find on the high
street; pieces that have been carefully designed and created by hand, making them extra unique and meaningful. What style/theme of wedding do you love designing for the most? Our dream customer would have to be a soon-to-be-wed couple who enjoy sentimentality and the essence of their purchasing. We pride ourselves in producing exclusive jewellery and rings that capture the alchemy of a wedding and a marriage. Pieces that symbolise eternal love and happiness, and so a couple who can appreciate this is who we’d love to target. County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
I
can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.
FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would
58
be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them
and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.
Melissa. x
Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.
I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.
Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.
Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.
How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.
Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.
The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.
To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.
To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 59

Huda Beauty Glow Obsessions Highlighter Palette £27, www.boots.com “For all those glamorous brides-to-be, this is the perfect product to define your features and achieve that gorgeous glow. The pocket-sized palettes come with four different shades to match any make-up style and I loved mixing them to create a bespoke hue. To achieve a luminous complexion, I applied to the high points of my face including my cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and bridge of my nose, and this buttery, powdered formula blended in beautifully. A big bonus for me was that you can add a small amount for a natural look or build up for a glam finish that looks great in photos.” — Olivia Gibson
GLOW UP!
Looking to achieve that oh-so stunning bridal glow for your wedding day? These products can help and team CWM have put them to the test Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Liquid Illuminator £26, www.spacenk.com “On turning to YouTube for help on how to use this product I found a tutorial video by Kevyn Aucoin’s fab director of artistry and education, Nick Lujan, and less than 10 minutes later, I was good to go! I put two of Nick’s suggested uses to the test and was impressed by both. Day one: layering Glass Glow on the cheekbones before foundation application, I received compliments on my luminous complexion! Day two: I mixed Glass Glow with my foundation and was wowed by the fresh even, natural-looking glow I achieved. Top tip? Don’t be deterred by the sparkle, the result is flawless.” — Kelly Andrews
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacianmide Dew Drops £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “As a bride-to-be, I know how important it is to look fabulous on your big day, so I was excited to try these drops designed to give you a fresh, dewy look. The product smells amazing, and a little pump goes a long way, so although it’s not the cheapest, it’ll take you a long time to go through it all. I used the drops every morning for a few days and noticed a difference right away. My skin felt softer and looked hydrated. I’m planning to use it on the morning of my wedding and would definitely recommend it.” — Melissa Barker 70
Sculpted by Aimee Second Skin Dewy Finish Foundation £24, www.sculptedbyaimee.com “Ideal for normal to dry skin this moisturising foundation has a gorgeously smooth texture that’s super-easy to blend resulting in an even finish. One pump is all that’s needed for a light application or for days when more coverage is in order a couple of pumps should do the trick. I loved the healthy glow and breathable feel it left me with. I was also thrilled to learn of its anti-ageing properties: music to my ears having hit 40 during lockdown!” — Kelly Andrews
Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist £18, www.naos-store.co.uk “I’ve never used a mist before but I’m very much a convert after this product. It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” — Danielle Harvey
Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Skin Tint £32, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This little beauty is a must in anyone’s make-up kit; the lightweight product blends like a dream. The sheer coverage formula was the perfect balance to even out my skin tone while leaving a natural-looking finish. I used the shade fair, applied it with a beauty blender and found that all my other beauty products layered beautifully over it. I was left with a glowy base and brightened complexion. I’d recommend this product for the summer and warmer weather!” — Olivia Gibson

The Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is the latest innovation from cult hair health brand AQUIS. Made from a naturally antimicrobial performance fabric it allows the hair to dry without force or heat and eliminates the frizz, damage and breakage caused by harsh terry towels. Hair is at its weakest when wet so protecting it from such harsh treatment means it’ll be smoother and stronger. What’s more, since it’s woven with copper, which boasts antimicrobial and antibacterial properties proven to repel bacteria the wrap stays fresher longer, and is great for travel. SILKY SMOOTH
Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty
Tim McBaj
It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.
B
orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 74
liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!
Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant
and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.
“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and
sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

I’m hoping my hen do abroad will go ahead ‒ depending on travel restrictions ‒ but I’m worried how this extra dose of sun before the big day will affect my make-up and bridal look! Help! What can I do? A nice time in the sun will give you a fabulous glow for your big day, although think about those tan lines! Make-up wise make sure you use a good-quality high-factor suncream on your face and try to keep your face out of the sun if possible by wearing a hat. Your make-up artist may just have to adjust your foundation colour slightly if you had your trial before your trip away. Either way enjoy the time on your hen do! Cheryl Higgs | Make-up artist | Cheryl Higgs Makeup & Beauty 07974 794 143 www.facebook.com/Cheryl-Higgs-Makeup-Beauty-398872200941376 I’m about to begin my wedding dress search, and I’m already feeling quite overwhelmed. What’s your advice to start this daunting task? Wedding gown shopping should be fun, but if not prepared can turn out to be the opposite! Do a little research before you book appointments. Word of mouth is great if someone you know had a good experience, look at shop websites, Google reviews and reach out to them on social media, we are happy to answer your questions. Having an idea of budget is always a good, most shops don’t openly display prices on their websites so don’t be afraid to contact them beforehand and ask for a guide on price range. Do you have any special requirements? Check what sample sizes they have in store, do they have a seamstress, can they cater for a bride in a wheelchair etc. All of these are questions best asked before your visit ‒ and don’t be afraid to ask what the payment terms are. These are all commonly heard and if you are a little uncomfortable it’s often easier to ask from a distance rather than face to face. Check your options on timescale, do you have enough time to order, if not and you are looking for off-the-peg, what selection do they have in store? If you book multiple appointments and find your perfect dress early on, please just take a couple of minutes to cancel at other shops, it’s something we do expect and whilst disappointing it’s not nearly as frustrating as waiting for a bride that doesn’t show up. Unconventionally, I do like the all white/ivory bridal party look for the bride and the bridesmaids; but what style could I go for that doesn’t completely detract from my own bridalgown? The Motee Maids mix and match bridesmaid collections are exactly what you are looking for! With a beautiful shade of ivory available in the original Pearl collection and the new Sleeve collection, you can choose from a gorgeous selection of embellishments to really make your ivory bridesmaid dresses pop! You can opt for the heavily encrusted detail or for the more muted pearl and silver details in the Polka, Petal and Diamond designs. Complement the detail in your bridal gown for a more cohesive look or opt for something totally different to make them stand out from the crowd! But don’t forget that as the bride, you still want to be the belle of the ball! I have lots of young flowergirls and want to make the shopping experience as easy as possible; what top tips do you have for the style/fitting and on-the-day shopping advice? If you have a few flowergirls it can make shopping both fun and a nightmare depending on the age of the children and willingness to play dress up. We have seen previously confident little girls suddenly go shy and refuse to cooperate when faced with trying on dresses in a bridal shop, as well as over enthusiastic ones getting the equivalent of a sugar rush and racing around causing havoc! My advice would be to have a really good idea of what you, the bride, would like them to wear, look for shops that carry both your ideal dresses and check that they are likely to be able to cater for all the sizes you need before you bring the girls in to try on. If possible book an appointment so that you have less disruption from a busy shop and always be prepared to dangle a carrot ‘if you try this on for me, we can go to the park afterwards’. The same advice is also useful for adult bridesmaids (though you may find that the pub holds more appeal than a trip to the park)! I’ve been trying on dresses for a few months now, and none of them have given me butterflies, or made me feel emotional. Is this common? I just feel everyone says they have this emotional ‘the one’ moment, and I’m just not sure that’s me. And it’s affecting my choices and I’m losing my vision of what I wanted to look like as a bride – help! It’s more common than you know not to feel this way emotionally; we have less criers than we do criers so you are not on your own there. The best advice we give our brides is to choose a dress you feel most you in and that’s the one. Consider comfort, consider longevity of the photos in a frame, consider the vibe of your wedding if that helps but ultimately the dress you feel best in is your “yes” dress and that will be your dress moment. Many brides say they feel more excited and relieved later in the day or days after. Knowing they have found it and ticked it of the list. Although my bridal look is going to be boho, I wanted something different to the go-to fresh flower crown. What do you suggest that will be completely unique but fitting to my look? The floral crown is the epitome of a boho bridal look but if you are wanting something a little bit different to the norm, why not go for a statement forehead hairpiece which is unique and very bohemian in style? Our Serenity hairpiece is so comfortable to wear and the beautiful crystal droplets provide that little bit of laid-back magical mystique that’s associated with the bohemian style. Accessorise it with some stunning crystal bangles and a pair of hoop earrings and you’ll have a gorgeous yet unusual boho bridal outfit. I really like my fashion, and always try new trends to suit my style; what’s going to be big in 2022? Here’s a dose of fresh style inspiration for those looking to get hitched later this year or next and want to be on top of their game. It’s fair to say waistcoats have experienced a resurgence, you just have to look at the power of Thomas Shelby and the other expertly styled cast of Peaky Blinders to see how men have been inspired to embrace a waistcoat moment again. From double breasted to the peak lapel, the beauty of this wardrobe addition is that is spans all ages, and with wedding dressing one of this season’s biggest trends is mixing and matching waistcoats within the wedding party. When done correctly, it can create the perfect kind of statement – dapper with a modern twist – allowing you to experiment with different colours and tones within your wedding party, offering you more to play about with other than simply changing the colour of your tie and pocket square. However, there are a few points to remember to make this a sartorial success. The first being choosing your colour combination wisely. More traditional pairings include a navy suit with a grey waistcoat, and a classic steel grey suit with a black waistcoat. You could, however, inject a modern twist by combining inky blue and stone, charcoal and wine or even midnight blue and burnt orange. The second style point to remember is to consider contrasting fabrics. As you can see from our Harcourt navy suit, just by adding the grey/blue check of the Stark waistcoat, it really makes this combination pop. The bolder choice, however, would be to pair the Harcourt navy waistcoat underneath the head to toe Bright check suit, which not only breaks the look up a little, but pulls out the blue detailing in the Bright check. Finally, to create a cohesive look, choose your accessories wisely.

Although rules are to be broken in fashion, picking three colours max to work with is a sure-fire way to create a winning look. Here you can see with the Harcourt navy, we’ve continued the blue theme by adding a navy knitted tie, while the plain white silk pocket square pulls in the white shirt with straight point collar. For the bolder dresser, we chose to style the Bright suit and Harcourt waistcoat with a blush pink knitted tie and paisley pocket square. The art to successful pairing contrasting prints like paisley and check is to keep it to small doses. Nick McGlynn | Head of buying | Skopes www.skopes.co.uk | www.instagram.com/officialskopes 79
Following the last 18 months, how has the wedding industry changed? Our local suppliers, experts in their field, give us the lowdown...
ENTERTAINMENT After the past 18 months, it seems people were desperate to be back with their loved ones to have a celebration. This has made us feel welcomed every time we’ve recently performed at a wedding, like everyone’s been missing us and the band has come to bring the party. After the pandemic, I expect to see an increase in bookings and weekends filling up quickly as there will be no restrictions and everyone will be ready to celebrate once again. Couples’ priorities have changed and varied as people were affected differently by the pandemic. You have those clients who are now trying to cut down on their band sizes due to change in venues,or perhaps even income, and on the other hand some people are increasing their band size and adding more live music throughout the day for their drinks reception and ceremony. This could be due to increased budgets through saving during lockdown or because the last 18 months have made them want to celebrate bigger and better ‒ we’re looking forward to being a part of some amazing parties! We have a very easy online system where clients can start planning their event with us. This means that throughout the pandemic, most clients who postponed had good time to get it all in order. When we do our final call before the event, it’s usually very easy as everything is already prepared for us. This includes music preferences, schedule and logistics. PHOTOGRAPHY During the past 18 months the wedding sector, regarding photography, has changed dramatically for me. Weddings are no longer a big, extravagant event with couples now going with a small intimate approach. Traditions seem to have gone out of the window and I’ve seen many couples getting creative with family members for some aspects of the day, such as making bunting right down to the bride and groom making their own bars. Going forward I believe this could be the approach many people take, cost-effective and you have an equally a great time! BRIDAL ACCESSORIES
WEDDING PLANNING
The two biggest changes in bridal accessory shopping during the last 18 months have been the growth of the video consultation and also the allocation of budget. The latter shifting to bigger spends on details that show up in the wedding photos, following on from the advent of more intimate weddings meaning less of the budget required for food, drink and entertainment. Pre-pandemic most of my clients opted for in-person studio consultations when choosing a bespoke bridal accessory, but during the various lockdowns as we all became much more adept at working via video link, my consultations switched to video. It’s a trend I’m expecting to continue for brides who don’t live close to my studio. Restrictions on guest numbers over the last 18 months meant that couples who managed to go ahead with their ceremonies rather than slashing the budget, chose to redistribute it and spend more on eye-catching elements such as the accessories, floral arrangements and outfits. I expect that this will rebalance as the size of wedding parties is able to increase, but imagine for some couples the temptation to wow on social media by maintaining those extra special flourishes will be hard to deny!
The last 18 months have probably been the hardest the industry has ever seen. The restrictions we’ve had to face have meant that not only the way people are booking weddings has changed, but also what people are booking. Regardless of restrictions lifting, we’ve seen that a lot of people are still keeping their weddings relatively small and people are choosing to spend their budget which would have gone on more guests, on added luxuries like entertainment. We’ve seen an increase in people booking more immersive experiences and musicians, which provides a more intimate experience allowing guests to feel more involved. We’ve had a lot of free-standing aerialists which have been booked, meaning people can be in and amongst the action. Couples are also looking for more versatile acts which will allow them to still perform with any restrictions in place, as we have still felt a lot of uncertainty around big events. Needless to say, people have got a lot of catching up to do and thankfully, we’ve seen bookings being made into the next couple of years, even into 2025! What most people do need now, is trust and flexibility. They need to be able to trust their suppliers and know that whatever the future may hold, Covid-19 restrictions or not, that their suppliers and event organisers will stand by them and they’ll do the same!

CEREMONIES Demand for a celebrant-led wedding is certainly on the increase; it’s important to note however, that a celebrant-led ceremony is not legally binding and the couple would need to have a registrar legally marry them. Typically couples get legally married at the local Town Hall, with just the two of them and two witnesses (or close family members) and have the larger celebrant wedding with all their family and friends. Couples I’ve been speaking to have a number of key reasons why they wanting a celebrant: ♥ Availability of registrars. Due to the increased pent up demand for weddings, couples are finding that registrars do not have the capacity to conduct legal weddings on a day and time that suits the couple. ♥ Couples who contact me have been to a celebrant wedding and like the personal and bespoke touches that a celebrant can add to their special day. Whether the couple want a traditional formal ceremony or a non-traditional and relaxed day with humour, the celebrant will find out exactly what the couple want and the ceremony will be tailored exactly to their personalities. The celebrant can also discuss adding mini ceremonies such as handtying, including family members and help with poems, readings and vows. ♥ Couples want a ceremony in a venue that is not licensed and so a registrar cannot conduct a legal ceremony in the venue. Couples who have sought me out are wanting to have their ceremony in their favourite venue which might be a garden, a woodland or their local village hall.
♥ Due to Covid, couples may have been legally married in the last 18 months , but due to the restrictions they had very few family members attending. They now want a larger ceremony with all their family and friends and are looking for a celebrant to conduct their ceremony. Isle of Harris Distillery along with, Harris Tweed Hebrides, the Harris Tweed Authority and the islands’ education services, worked closely with schools across the island to challenge the children to design a new Isle of Harris Distillery tweed whilst learning more about the history of tweed cloth. Scott’s winning design was woven in consultation with Judy R Clark to create this unique special cloth. Each jacket is made using specially woven Isle of Harris Distillery Harris Tweed combined with luxurious teal velvet collars embroidered in with rose gold threads. The linings are inspired by the Hebridean seas finished with rose copper buttons and contrasting sea-blue buttonholes. Priced £660 (includes UK postage), visit https://harrisdistillery.com

bold and fun wedding photography I’m a fun and bold Yorkshire wedding photographer. I live in Harrogate, a quiet town in North Yorkshire and I can’t get enough of the Yorkshire Biscuit Brew tea. I’m into outdoorsy stuff, climbing, snowboarding, yoga and paddle boarding on a lake. I talk a lot and get excited at anything that involves trying new things and meeting new people. My couples describe me as a natural and fun person who makes them surprisingly relaxed and brings out elements of their personality they have never seen on pictures. I give back the feeling of the day with all its emotions.
