Whatever the weather W

inter weddings are really coming into their own; couples are embracing the autumnal hues, the cosy atmosphere you can create and the delish hearty food options on offer at this time of year! The best thing about a winter wedding for me, is that you know what you’re letting yourself in for when it comes to the weather. I tied the knot in March, and although I kept an eye on the weather apps, I couldn’t be disheartened when the heavens opened and it rained for most of the day. It did not change the day at all, we dashed outside with brollies for some images, and we celebrated the whole day in a gorgeous venue without a care what was happening in the world outside. We were in wedded bliss, whatever the weather, so don’t worry if you too have a wedding in the coming months – I hear rain on the wedding day is lucky too! Here’s what you have to look forward to this issue: we have some cosy winter venues on page 27 perfect for tying the knot at this time of year, and a feature on intimate weddings – be inspired by this latest trends on page 53. If you’re embarking on your wedding dress – or jumpsuit! – search, then check out our bridal boutiques feature on page 71 where local experts help you with this daunting task. Our real wedding couples this issue talk all-things wedding; from pages 35 to 47 there could be some ideas you want to pinch and apply to your own virtual moodboard. If you fancy gracing the pages of Your Surrey Wedding like this edition’s couples then submit your details here: www.county.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding − we can’t wait to hear all about your big day. Happy planning,

Having a great party was a must for Precious and Sean on page 47. Guestlist under 30? Be inspired by these intimate wedding ideas on page 53.

Why choose Janet Shell Ceremonies? We are so happy we chose the lovely Janet Shell to do our ceremony. Janet has the most beautiful calming voice and lovely smile. Our guests shed a tear as well as laughed with some comical moments. She put us at ease throughout the whole experience and made us look forward to the ceremony rather than panic.

After many years travelling the world as an IT Consultant, Sally Bosman had a total career change in 2020, becoming a personal travel consultant just before the world shut down! “I made good use of my lockdown start,” she says, “advising people about refunds, traffic-light lists, travel requirements and so on, until the world began to open up again.” Unlikely though it may have seemed at the time, Covid gave her a head start to offering great customer service with a personal touch and most of her first clients still book their holidays with her today. In fact, nearly all of Sally's business now comes from recommendations, especially honeymoons. Testament to Sally's superior customer service skills, honed during this difficult time, is the fact that she has recently been nominated for the Reigate and Banstead Business Customer Service award and has just heard that she's one of the three finalists. “This means the world to me and, even if I don’t win, together with my five-start Trustpilot reviews, being a finalist is a huge accolade, moving forward.” Find out more about how Sally can help you with your dream honeymoon, check out https://sallybosman.notjusttravel.com

BARNETT HILL 01483 893 361 |www.barnetthill.co.uk Set in the heart of the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty, Barnett Hill is surrounded by 26 acres of peaceful manicured gardens and woodland. Built by Frank Cook, the grandson of the travel agent Thomas Cook, in 1905, the hotel enjoys wonderful views across the Surrey Hills. Barnett Hill is little short of a fairytale and makes for a most beautiful exclusive-use wedding venue. Described by The Telegraph as ‘a magnificent gingerbread-brick palace, crowned with green copper domes’, the Queen Anne-style mansion reveals itself at the end of winding, tree-lined drive. Inside this graceful building, ceremonies take place in the panelled Drawing Room overlooking the terrace and lawn beyond. With a tall bay window and high chandeliered ceiling, it’s an elegant room in which to say your vows with up to 80 guests. Post-vows, the Garden Suite is decorated in a neutral grey palette and comes complete with a large fireplace – it’s a great blank canvas for

each couple to make their mark. With large windows along two sides, it’s a light, airy space, which can accommodate up to 80 guests seated on round tables, 120 can celebrate with you for the evening festivities. The grand staircase and tiled hallway at Barnett Hill are iconic and make a wonderful backdrop for wedding photographs with endless opportunities for photos outside too! Should the weather be inclement there are plenty of spots for shots in the Library, Bar and the intimate spaces dotted throughout the hotel. When tying the knot here, couples benefit from a wedding tasting for the couple and all bedrooms with breakfast the following morning included in the exclusive-use fee. The hotel’s 56 bedrooms are spread across the Mansion, Courtyard and Gardener’s Cottage; a room for the bride and her party is included from 8am on the day of the wedding too. The venue’s experienced wedding team, led by Gemma, are available at every step of the way to support and guide couples during their wedding planning.

REAL WEDDINGS

A perfect match Becky and Mikey’s big day was a celebration of love, laughter and football Images courtesy of Vero J Photography

B

ecky and Mikey met at Winchester University 11 years ago and bonded over a shared love of football, “We both had found great humour and laughter in conversations and were both tall!” adds Becky. “It was great to have a man who was still taller than me even when I wore heels.” Fast-forward to February 2022, when returning to Winchester, the couple were strolling along the river to the pub where they had their first date when Becky heard the all-important question. “It was outside the pub and by the river where Mikey got down on one knee and proposed,” shares Becky. “We then had lunch in the pub before checking into our room for the night and venturing out for a meal at Rick Stein Winchester. Two days later Mikey caught Covid so we literally stayed in our engagement bubble!” The date was set 17th August 2023, with The Barn at Botley Hill setting the scene. Here Becky tells us more about their day... 35

Jessica Eliza made our beautiful wedding flowers using cosmos, a very delicate flower that she knew how to place perfectly, with roses, delphiniums (which turns out are Mikey’s grandmother’s favourite flowers) and others. Mikey’s mum made ever yone a shot of sloe gin for the day. Mikey comes from a Finn ish background and his relatives couldn’t make the day, so the toast was raised to them.

I went to The Dress in Teddington and the ladies there were wonderful. I didn’t find the dress the first time, but after finding a Stephine Allin gown on Pinterest, the team went out of their way to get the dress in for me and that was it, I was in love. The dress was called Jet from the Eden collection. 36

Mikey’s suit was navy with a subtle check and gold detailing.

The groomsmen wore the same as Mikey but with a different tie and pocket square.

REAL WEDDINGS

The girls chose a dress in their own style but in the same colour (white alabaster) from Azazie. They looked beautiful!

Our cake was made by a par ent at my school (I’m a teacher) who runs her own cake business. It was so lovely to have a familiar fac e arr ive on the morning of the wed ding. It was two tiers with hints of orange and blue to go with our flow ers.

Our videographer (Shaun) is also a good friend of ours, so was also a guest. He went above and beyond to capture the footage he needed and even got another colleague to help video whilst he was being a guest and having his food!

We had two readings by friends which were delivered with such poise.

We had two footballs as our ‘guest books’ which our guests signed with a gold pen and an ‘I do’ candle burning brightly next to them from anthropology.

Kalm Kitchen provided the most incredible food for every single dietary requirement and offered its pizza van for our evening food. 37

We came into the wedding breakfast to Glad All Over which is Crystal Palace’s song (mine and my dad’s football team) and everyone waved their napkins around and joined in. It was amazing!

The best man and father-of-the-groom had

the wrong trousers on so had to strip and swap over!

When people say that your wedding day is the best day of your life you think how can it be? But wow, it was the most magical, beautiful, lovefilled day that will be cherished in our hearts forever. When else do you get to have everyone you love in one place, dressed up looking the best you’ll ever look, eating the most amazing food and celebrating?

We had an incredible band called Aliveband UK. The band had three weddings in a row that week but performed out of their skin and a guest even took their card at the end of the night!

I cried at the blue skies in the morning, got nervous walking down the aisle when the string duo started, and laughed and smiled − all these emotions in one day! We even shed a tear on the drive home the next day when listening to songs from the day in the car.

Top tip: Stay on the dancefloor as much as you can so people can always find you, be around you and soak up your love. auren and Rob met at a football match 13 years ago. “Rob’s a semi-professional football player and has been a goalkeeper most of his life. I guess you could say Rob was tall, dark (he had hair at the time) and handsome!” shares Lauren. After embarking on a happy and long-lasting relationship, Rob proposed in Ibiza while they were on holiday in June 2019. “He popped the question while we were watching a sunset – which I love!” The big date was set 5th August 2023 with Reigate Hill Golf Club providing the perfect backdrop. Here, we find out more about their day… SETTING THE SCENE It’s always hard whittling down your dream wedding venue, but for Lauren and Robert the main attraction for Reigate Hill Golf Club was the outside ceremony area and the long walk down the aisle. “Although sadly, we had to move the ceremony inside the day before due to the weather,” shares Lauren. “We had the first storm of the year and the storm even got given a name it was so bad! My auntie Ann helped me dress the inside ceremony area and I can quite honestly say, without her, it would not have looked as beautiful as it did.” All the finishing touches came together in a colour scheme of ivory and navy with silver accents. The favours were small boxes filled with chocolates while the place settings were ivory hearts adorned with a blue diamanté. The table plan and table names (which were Disney songs), were from Cherished Cards and these also followed the palette of ivory and navy complete with heart crystals. For centrepieces, the couple opted for blossom trees from Glam Grazing (wrapped in ivory ribbon and draped with diamantés by Lauren’s aunt) while artificial flowers were used to dress the top table. Real flowers were used in the bridal bouquet, bridesmaids’ bouquets, and bridal party buttonholes from Flowers by Liz and coordinated with the colour scheme. The venue was also adorned with draping from the Glam Grazing team. “This was going to be used on the outside arches during the ceremony, but the team kindly added these to the doorframe inside to dress the room more.” Guests could also enjoy a sweet cart and doughnut wall (provided by the venue but filled by the couple). “We made a crisp wall, mainly for the children but the adults enjoyed these too!” adds Lauren. LOOKING THE PART Lauren’s wedding dress was from Brides Visited in Ashtead. “My sister bought her wedding dress there more than 10 years ago and I knew the staff and service is great,” shares Lauren. “I went in looking for a completely different style to the one I chose, but after trying on many dresses, the corset, princess-style suited me best and the lace detail on the dress was stunning.” Rob looked dapper in a light grey, three-piece suit from Moss, which was also the colour and style worn by the groomsmen. The bridesmaids complemented the rest of the bridal party in long, navy-blue chiffon dresses from Monsoon with lace detail at the top to match the bride’s. TIME TO CELEBRATE For the all-important ceremony, guests were entertained by a singer, Lousie Harrington, who also performed during the drinks reception. Later in the evening, the couple opted for a DJ from Expert Entertainment, as part of the venue’s wedding package. 41

CHERISHED MEMORIES Understandably, there were a few nerves on the day, “I was probably the most nervous I have ever been,” shares Lauren, “I was both emotional and extremely happy to get to this day.” Although with eight bridesmaids and two flowergirls (the couples’ children) she was certainly supported. “We also had nine pageboys in navy blue who also walked down the aisle before the bridesmaids. Seeing all of them look so beautiful was incredibly special. Having our children there for the day was something I will never forget.” Another standout moment for Lauren was walking down the aisle with her dad and having her mum as a witness. “Then actually seeing Rob so emotional at the end of the aisle added to my memorable moments. I know Rob enjoyed the party once he could relax after his speech – I cried during most of them, all were so well-written and delivered.” “Our two-year-old daughter, Daisy, had danced around in her ‘princess bridesmaid dress’ the night before and thought it was brilliant, but on-the-day she didn’t want to put her dress on!” recalls Lauren. “My sister Kirsty had her wrapped in a towel seconds before walking down the aisle but somehow managed to get the dress on her before their big entrance. It was not funny on the day as I was walking behind her, but we can laugh about it now.” THE SUPPORT ACT “My auntie Ann, worked so hard setting up for us, and the venue looked beautiful,” recalls Lauren. “My sister wrote a poem for her speech, which was hilarious and emotional at the same time. She knows Rob and I well so had incorporated our relationship history. My mum and bridesmaids really helped looking after our children and ensuring the day ran as smoothly as possible. They ended up doing a lot more work during the turnover of the ceremony to the sit-down meal. And also a thank you to Lorraine and her partner (our photographers) for getting us outside for some pictures despite the rain; she got us down under the arches for photos and it was beautiful.” 43

BEST. PARTY. EVER.

Precious and Sean had a curated, festival-vibe day with a navy blue and blush pink scheme Images courtesy of Pippa Volans Photography

P

recious met Sean when they were younger as he is the best friend of her brother; fast-forward 19 years and they have now tied the knot! After Sean proposed in a treehouse in the Cotswolds the day before Precious’s birthday, the big date was set for 27th August 2024, with the bride’s family home in Virginia Water setting the scene. Here, we find out from Precious more about their day… 47

Our venue was my childhood home and we wanted to add to its lifetime of special moments that Randall’s Nursery holds for us.

My dress was the second one I tried on! It was from this tiny, gorgeous boutique near Camberley and I tried this dress on initially as a joke. I said I wanted sleeves, no bling, and this dress is outrageously over the top and a complete glitter ball − I cried and fell in love! My veil was my something borrowed from my eldest sister, originally from Miss Bush in Ripley. My earrings and bracelet were a wedding gift from my husband designed by himself and created secretly by a boutique in Paris called 1940. The bridesmaids all wore white dresses − timeless and bold. They all had cowl backs which I adored, and the dress suited them all even though they were all different shapes and sizes.

48

Our flowers were white and green with touches of blush pink, we really wanted to reflect the wild garden throughout. The groomsmen all wore black tuxedos.

REAL WEDDINGS

We love a date day to the countryside with a picnic, so what better way to reflect us than a quintessential British picnic for our wedding catering?

The tables had demi johns with pampas grass in them, which we removed before the picnic was served.

For the ceremony, we had a pampas grass hoop as a backdrop, and then we utilised it for the table plan by adding in a smaller hoop.

Sean arrived in my convertible cream Beetle and we both left in it too!

Our big-day bake was navy blue and white with gold leaf detail.

We gave guests scratchcards − we wanted everyone to be lucky in love. Sean wore a tux with a white jacket − simple and classic. In the evening he changed his white jacket to black before the first dance. The best man’s speech was truly wonderful, both emotional and witty.

We had an ice cream cart for the drinks reception, lots of garden games, chill-out areas, sweetie station and so on. 49

Tip: Get an on the day coordinator or wedding planner!

We had Mint DJs throughout the day, he did the full production: the PA system for the outdoor ceremony, a chilled set for the drinks reception accompanied by a bongos player that he provided. He then provided the PA system for the marquee for dinner speeches and background music.

The whole day was just so busy and there were so many people to chat to, at one point we hid in a walk in fridge to have a glass of bubbles together, eat a slice of cake and absorb the moment.

It truly was the best party I’ve ever been too. And a true reflection of us as a couple and how we most enjoy spending our time, good food, great drinks, the best company and a huge party!

In the evening, Mint DJs came into its element with a full show that truly made the day! The evening was a full outdoor festival (our favourite date was to Lovebox many years ago). Tim was accompanied in the evening by the bongos player again but also a live saxophonist, it truly was incredible. We had CO2 cannons, huge sparklers and a light show to boot!

Small but PERFECTLY FORMED The county’s wedding aficionados offer expert advice on planning an intimate wedding

S

ince the pandemic, the biggest shift in the wedding industry has been towards more intimate weddings. Born out of necessity during various lockdowns and restrictions, small yet mighty nuptials made us all reevaluate what’s important and remind us what a wedding is all about. So much so in fact that the trend for intimate weddings is here to stay. We chatted to our local experts to discover the benefits of a small but perfectly formed celebration as well as their tips for planning your own.

BUDGET “The space you create for an intimate wedding can be so cosy and personal, which means that with the same budget as your average wedding, you can go all out to make the experience more special for your loved ones,” says Florrie Warrener from de Havilland Memories. “When it comes to budgeting, consider your priorities. What do you want your experience to be, or what will guests say about your wedding after the event? Which are the memories you’d like to keep alive the longest? Invitations are one of the few parts of the wedding that will last forever, and something that’s unique and bespoke to you that you can treasure as much as your photos.” Francesa Neame-White from Event Elegance with Francesca says, “You can allocate more resources per guest, ensuring each person feels like an essential part of the day. So, when it comes to budgeting for an intimate wedding, allocate your funds to the elements that will make your day memorable, such as the venue, catering, and personalised details. Invest in high-quality photography and entertainment to capture every special moment and keep your guests engaged. Just remember to keep a careful eye on your budget to ensure a flawless celebration that doesn’t break the bank.” Meanwhile, Precious Randall-Greene from Green Lily Events, has some fantastic practical advice: “Although intimate weddings are typically less expensive overall than large celebrations, remember that some suppliers may charge a higher minimum fee for smaller gatherings. “Create a spreadsheet. This is always the very first step whenever I take on a new client. Decide on your overall budget then break it down to cover absolutely every category of your wedding from the dress to the rings and accommodation. It’s a good idea to keep 10 per cent in a miscellaneous category as something unexpected will always crop up. Once you’re happy with how you’ve allocated your spend on each element, start reaching out to suppliers. I’d recommend getting three quotes for each category – enough to let you compare without becoming overwhelmed.”

“Intimate weddings allow you to experience a destination-style wedding here in the UK for a fraction of the price,” – Abi Clough, Voco Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa VENUES “With a guest list that doesn’t exceed 30, the possibilities for creating a more profound and memorable experience are endless,” says Francesca. “You can venture into exclusive venues such as boutique hotels, private estates, charming vineyards or cosy restaurants, which all provide a perfect backdrop and atmosphere for a celebration that’s all about closeness and togetherness.” When looking for a venue, there are some slightly different considerations when it comes to a smaller celebration, says Precious: “Choose a venue that’s the right size for your guest list, you don’t want to choose somewhere that’ll feel empty. But the benefit is that you have more flexibility, and can choose a more unique or exclusive space that might not be within budget for a larger wedding.” Voco Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa is an ideal venue and offers an intimate wedding package for up to 30 loved ones. The venue’s Abi Clough says, “The package offers you exclusive use of our traditional 14th-century Oak Room for both your civil ceremony and wedding breakfast. It allows you

GUEST LIST

One of the most difficult parts of planning an intimate day is deciding who makes it onto your very select guest list. Fear not, our experts have some great tips for narrowing it down. “When it comes to who to invite, I always say to my couples that it’s an honour to be invited,” Florrie tells us. “You should only invite those who have made a positive impact on your life and those who the day wouldn’t be complete without.” Francesca agrees: “Deciding who to invite can be a delicate process. It’s an opportunity to bring together those who’ve left an indelible mark on your life and your relationship. Keep the list exclusive to those who hold a special place in your hearts, creating an environment where everyone is not just a guest but an integral part of your journey.” While keeping the list to the very closest family and friends, family dynamics for some can be complicated. “This is a big one,” says Precious. “Work out if there are any relatives who absolutely must be invited, as you don’t want to create unnecessary tension for yourself. However, it is your wedding day, so if you feel strongly that you don’t want certain people there, then you should be able to make that decision. There’s less pressure in this case to invite everyone you know!” Laura Barfield from Simply Laura Calligraphy says it’s all about the atmosphere you want to create: “I think it’s really important to invite those who’re going to enjoy your big day and make you feel special. Write a list of everyone you’d consider inviting, separate out your top-tier, then be realistic about what you can afford. It’s always good to ask your parents for their input and be fair with both sides of the family.”

“The people in the room on your big day wishing you luck, drinking your bar bill and eating your budget absolutely need to also be the ones who’ll feed you if you’re hungry, hug you when you need it and dance with you through the tears. If you wouldn’t ask them for help, don’t ask them to play.” – Helen Noble, Celebrant of Surrey 54

“WE DO” An oh-so romantic intimate ceremony is always worth considering. Helen Noble, Celebrant of Surrey says, “A horseshoe seating shape is always intimate. It’s like those rows of seats are actually hugging the ceremony space, and makes all the difference. “Whether its 20 guests or 200, it’s the transformation from worry to wonder that I love. You might think you’ll spend less time planning or worrying about an intimate wedding, but bear in mind that smaller doesn’t necessarily mean easier. Have a conversation with me or, do my healthy marriage success course. Once you know what your values are, then you say ‘yes’ to more of that and ‘no’ to anything that’s not that!” We love the personal nature of a celebrant-led ceremony, and with fewer guests you can take this even further by involving them in this key part of the day. Ask your celebrant about the various rituals that would involve your congregation such as a wedding ring warming, or unity candle ceremony.

“In the end, it’s not about the size of the wedding but the depth of the love and the lasting memories shared with those who matter most,” – Francesca Neame-White, Event Elegance with Francesca CATERING Just because you’ve set enough budget aside to cater for 100 guests, doesn’t necessarily mean you need to invite that many. If you decided to halve that or even cut it down to a third for the same budget, you’d be looking at quality over quantity. For so many of us food tells a story and is a crucial part of any wedding day, so if it’s the area you’ve both chosen to prioritise you really could go all out! What about a seven-course finedining tasting menu? Just some food for thought!

STATIONERY So much more detail is possible when your guest list consists of 30 or fewer. “You can really make everything personal for your loved ones,” says Florrie. “Think of ways to include more about your love story and how this relates to your guests. This could be a little nod to some of them on their place cards. You could for example have a little illustration at each setting that represents something your guest loves. You can also elevate your wedding in ways you might not have thought of by having bespoke signage and other details dotted around your venue.” Laura says, “Some couples opt for a place card that their guests can take home such as a wooden log slice, sea glass, pine cone or a Christmas decoration. These can then double up as favours and give your

de Havilland Memories © https://annafutter-photography.com

to tailor your special day with personalised favours and menus, as well as offering you the opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones.” This way you can focus your budget to bring your dreams to life with everything you want, and more.

“Use decor that creates a warm atmosphere, partly reflected through your flowers; and have candles for some soft romantic lighting.” – Precious Randall-Greene, Green Lily Events

Abi too agrees that curating the perfect atmosphere is key to an intimate day: “A smaller wedding can take away any additional stress by allowing you to focus on your closest friends and family, however you have to ensure there’s a good atmosphere and that all the little details are correct. For example, you may have to look at alternatives, perhaps a less traditional option, for the seating plan compared to a larger wedding breakfast.” What about a horseshoe layout with the two of you seated at a sweetheart table, or a single banqueting table with everyone gathered together?

ENTERTAINMENT

VENUE STYLING “To create a suitable space, you need to make sure that your venue is used effectively. There’s not much point having an intimate wedding in a large, empty barn,” says Florrie. “You can do this by having little alcoves and photo opportunities. This is another example of where bespoke signage and calligraphy would play a role as it can be used as a backdrop for photos. Creating a space where you can really spend time with each group invited will make all the difference.” Francesca says, “To make your intimate wedding day truly special, focus on the details. Personalised decorations, meaningful keepsakes, and sentimental touches can set the stage for a celebration that reflects your unique bond. Use warm lighting, soft fabrics, and elegant table settings to elevate the ambience.”

Buying dinner for 30 people versus 100 will leave you more budget to focus on what you love. Perhaps in your case it’s entertainment. All you need to bear in mind is what will be appropriate for a small group. By all means, hire a band, after all you can’t beat live music; but consider the size of it. If there are more members in the band than there are on your guest list, this will likely overwhelm the perfect vibe you’ve worked so hard to achieve. A trio or quartet would be ideal and if they can perform a chilled acoustic set before taking you through a more lively party playlist for the evening, then more’s the better. Simply Laura Calligraphy

guests a lasting memory of your big day. “Using stationery can be a great way to create an intimate special space on your big day too. Many opt for memory tables and signs to remember loved ones who sadly can’t be there. Some even have reserved signs so the bridal party are sat at the front of the ceremony room, which can be really comforting to a couple. Above all, it’s really important to have what the two of you want and not worry about trends or traditions.”

Q&A Our experts answer your problems

FACING FACTS

My skin seems to be having a breakout, probably due to stress leading up to the wedding day. Can make-up alone hide the blemishes? Make-up can help conceal blemishes and breakouts, but it won’t treat your skin complaint − sometimes, it might even make it worse! It’s always worth seeking out a dermatologist or visiting a facial clinic for some professional guidance if it’s causing distress or if it’s an ongoing issue. They can offer more guidance when your current skincare routine doesn’t seem to help ease breakouts. Cleansing every day is key and so, so important. Products that can help breakouts are easily obtainable from the high street though. Do some research on salicylic acid, niacinamide and BHA liquid exfoliant; these can all be added into your daily routine to help ease inflammation and reduce possible scaring. Amy Lacey, Amy Lacey Bridal Hair & Makeup Artist, www.amylacey.co.uk

HEADS ABOVE THE REST My mum would love to wear a headpiece to my wedding, although she’s quite shy and self-conscious so wouldn’t want anything too large or bright. What style do you suggest for something elegant and subtle yet striking to make her feel a million dollars! A visit to a milliner such as The Milliners Hat Box is a great way to create the perfect headpiece, as the professional can work with your mum to help make her feel confident, special and stylish. It will be a day she will always remember, not only because her daughter looks amazing on her wedding day, but because as the mother-of-the-bride, she feels a million dollars too! Virginia Ayres, The Milliners Hat Box, www.facebook.com/Themillinershb The team at Your Surrey Wedding say: Think about the size of the headpiece, something subtle with the wow factor but not too much height and width that she feels the hat is wearing her and not the other way around! Consider colour palettes, complement shades to her skin tone and colouring in terms of eyes and hair, as well as the chosen outfit she wants to wear on the day. The hat should complement the whole aesthetic not compete with it! 74

Well grounded If wedding planning stress is getting the better of you, take this time-out with Ground Wellbeing’s Peigin Crowley

A

n award-winning spa consultant Peigin Crowley has spent more than 20 years crafting distinctive and transformative wellness products and treats for fivestar luxury properties. But in 2020, her attention shifted to the home. Experiencing the devastating impacts of stress, burnout, loss of identity and disconnection from the natural world, she embarked on a quest to create products and at-home rituals that could easily be incorporated into a daily self-care routine. Today her brand, Ground Wellbeing, continues to grow, focusing on craft and quality over quantity, sustainable business practices and the promotion of accessible and intuitive self-care for all. Committed to the power of touch, the brand’s rituals are created by Peigin to deliver carefully developed massage treatments through her years of work as an aromatherapist, where she gained a deeper sense of empathy, compassion and understanding. She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.

sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.

TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.

BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

WHY NOT TRY... Ground Wellbeing Talamh Balancing Body Oil Increase mindfulness and help manage stress with this non-greasy, skin-softening blend of botanical oils. Infused with balancing extracts of frankincense and geranium bourbon, this thoughtful formula provides clarity and mental fortitude to steady the mind, paired with sweet orange to ignite the senses. Use whenever you need to instantly nourish skin and restore balance. It can also be applied to pulse points during the day or used to support breathwork. Ground Wellbeing Beo Focus Spray Made using 100 per cent natural essential oils, sage and cedarwood boost concentration and memory to create an ideal environment for productivity and focus. Spritz on upholstery or clothing (not your wedding dress just in case) to add energy and focus to your day. Find these products at more at www.groundwellbeing.com

HOT TOPIC

This issue, our experts tells us about the top trends to look out for in 2024

TIME FOR SOME FUN!

Freya Taylor from Weddings by Freya Jane (www.weddingsbyfreyajane.co.uk) says: 2024 is set to be a year of fun, fashion and entertainment and as a wedding planner who puts guest experience at the forefront of her work, I’m here for it! Live performers are becoming a focal point of weddings and generally throwing a real good party is going to be key for our 2024 couples. Photography is leaning more towards the editorial style, with film photography also making a comeback. More brides are going to be opting for versatile or multiple wedding dresses to switch up their look throughout the day. With social media becoming increasingly important, there’s more emphasis on having Instagrammable, fashion-forward wedding dresses. So, aesthetics will continue to grow in individuality. Immersive entertainment such as audio guest books, 360 degree photo booths and selfie mirrors are also set to be highly sought after. Here are some more of my 2024 wedding trend predictions: •Champagne towers •Removable wedding dress sleeves and long gloves •Grazing tables •Sparklers and cold sparks •Signature cocktails •Wedding content creators •Sax players •Short veils •Drone videography • Wedding breakfast entertainment It’s going to be fun, fun, fun and we can’t wait to guide our couples through it!

SEALED WITH A KISS

SOMETHING SWEET

www.ellisgrayprod.com

Laura Barfield from Simply Laura Calligraphy (www.instagram.com/simply.laura.calligraphy) says: There are four main 2024 wedding stationery trends that I certainly have noticed. Firstly, the pocket folded envelopes. These are such a popular option for couples and allow the invite, details page and RSVP to sit together cohesively, keeping it all in one place for your guests. The second is incorporating shapes into stationery. Whether that’s arched or half-arched wedding invitations or circular place cards, using shapes can be really eye-catching and makes a nice statement. The use of wax seals too for both invitations and place cards is a timeless classic that’ll always impress. These can be personalised with initials to give that extra special touch to your stationery. Finally: QR codes for RSVPs. These are so convenient for your guests to scan and let you know whether they’re able to join you, rather than relying on the post.

OLD-SCHOOL CHIC

Brooke Ellis, co-founder and director of Ellis Gray Productions (www.ellisgrayprod.com) says: Our 2024 trend prediction is the classic vibe. We think the classic, elegant, old-school looks are coming back and will be huge over the next 12 months. Think Frank Sinatra in his prime kind of vibes. Black and white colour 82

Grace McIntyre from BrownieMe (www.brownieme.co.uk) says: I think 2024 will see a rise in wholesome, personalised weddings. Although tradition has so much value, there’s nothing wrong with adding a few special touches and elements to show off your personalities. For example, chocolate brownies with your favourite toppings and a sign that says: “These are our fave toppings, if you don’t like them, tough luck!” This creates a wholesome feel as your guests see the two of you shine through. I think personalised gifts will also be on the rise in 2024, with more and more couples trying to find unique ways to thank their nearest and dearest for all their help with the wedding. A personalised brownie gift box is perfect for this. Who doesn’t love a good chocolate brownie, right? The thing I love most about working with couples is that every client is different, and with brownies being so versatile, I can work with them to create exactly what they want. There are no limitations or rules!

themes, champagne flowing, classical music filling the venue are all things we expect to see. This ties in beautifully with wedding films too. It allows the video to have a timeless feel to it and becomes something that can be looked back on for many years to come with no out-dated themes.

Built on a raised, wrap-around private deck, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate four adults in two private suites. Constructed almost entirely of recycled materials, the camp offers couples a ‘slow safari’ that is as sustainable as it is luxurious. The suites come complete with an indoor lounge, bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas, as well as a private pool with views over the lagoon. Dereck Joubert, the CEO of Great Plains, tells us: “Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the ecodesign boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day.” Discover more about Sitatunga Private Island and its offerings at www.greatplainsconservation.com/safari/sitatunga-private-island

The Italian dream

Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village

F

or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.

on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.

RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY

The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.

Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.

FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.

LOOKING FOR MORE?

Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.

For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.

DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my
