ARTS AND HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIP
REPORT
ISSUE N° 1
Mission Point Loma Nazarene University exists to provide higher education in a vital Christian community where minds are engaged and challenged, character is modeled and formed, and service is an expression of faith. Being of Wesleyan heritage, we strive to be a learning community where grace is foundational, truth is pursued, and holiness is a way of life.
scholarship and service. I am excited to invite you to browse through this report to give you an appreciation how our faculty in the College of Arts and Humanities are engaging these important areas of work. Like many universities, we use the Boyer model for scholarship, which includes the scholarship of discovery, application, integration and teaching/learning. The quality of each type of scholarship is typically judged in a rigorous manner by a community of peers within the related disciplinary fields of research, application or performance. Most faculty members will not engage in every type of scholarship but each is vitally important for the life of the college. This continued activity keeps them active in their areas of expertise and encourages their growth as lifelong learners. Each type of scholarship that faculty members engage in can also offer various benefits to the students who interact with these professors either through direct engagement with a faculty mentor in a community of scholars or indirectly by engaging learning through intentional educational opportunities. I commend the great variety and the high quality of the scholarship represented by the College of Arts and Humanities in this report, but more importantly, the faculty members themselves who are represented within its pages.
