Let’s Talk Let’s take a different approach to all of your beauty inside and out! The basic skills of developing fashion sense, outer beauty and the most important your inner beauty growth, are vital to helping you gain the skills for the direction you are seeking! It is so unfortunate that we as women are portrayed in such a negative manner. We are often depicted inferior, as promiscuous figures, uneducated, only beneficial to the domestic capacity or simply not valued as we should be. We are definitely more than what is stated above. As women we have power and influence, but society has begun to view us differently only because we have allowed it. We have lost many of the values, ethics and morals that will teach and train these young ladies how to mature and become exceptional women. Let’s take back our positive titles as women and get the respect and honor we deserve!

This magazine will provide great advice, knowledge, and show how diversity can lead to a better you! It’s important that we stand and represent something in the world because we all have a place. Many are afraid to venture out and becoming what others deem unattainable. Women must begin to take a chance and discover other areas of life and dig deep into our desires to become something greater. Greater could mean a more educated, open, healthier, and balanced individual. “Couture” living represents women of all ethnicities, religion, and cul ture. It’s time for women to see that we don’t have to be limited to the glass ceiling. Corporate America, society, or the economy can not stop women from being successful or prevent us from becoming effective leaders in our communities. It’s time for us to stand up and be proud of who and what we are. We were created to have dominion (ownership) and it’s time we earned our place in the world. More women all over the world are becoming business owners, leaders, CEO’s, Direc tors and are receiving their degrees. There are several reasons why I joined Couture Magazine. I have always believed God has a purpose for each and every one of us. Our job is to figure out what it is and walk in it. I am very passionate about women’s issues and those of our children. This magazine gives me an opportunity to help with both. This magazine provides an outlet to empower women and teens to overcome their situations and focus on a brighter future. By reading and practicing the information provided in the multitude of articles, our readers will have the opportunity to better themselves and those around them. I look forward to doing my part in helping them on this journey. –Janice Howard, Copy Editor
Many people are concerned about the economic times in which we live and rightfully so. Inflation, unemployment, and crime seem to have taken its toll on the American dream. Our youth appear to have lost hope in going to college, having a good job, and marriage. Everyone knows someone who has been involved in violence, sexual sin, and the penal system. How are we to handle all of the problems? Is all lost? Is there any hope or happiness for us today? Yes, there is! Bishop TD Jakes says: “You will never understand pleasure without pain.”
Divine Living
How you face your crisis is critical. Trials, tests and temptations are a part of life. We all go through them. No one likes them yet they still happen to the best of saints and the worst of sinners. How can you know if you have grown mentally and spiritually from year to year if you never have a problem? The definition of a trial is: a test of faith, patience, or stamina through subjection to suffering or temptation. It is a source of vexation or annoyance. A trial can make you or break you. Trials, however, are seasonal and are only for a period of time. They pass when we don’t make things bigger than they are. Recognize them as little bumps Author Pastor Patsy Martin, Spiritual Director in the road to a greater destination. Focus on the promise not the problem. Remember God has not lost control of the universe and has the ability to calm every storm. There is a higher power, a A Different Perspective on Overcoming Crisis higher influence, a God who rules and reigns and controls circumstances and situations that are beyond your area and realm of authority. A test is a critical examination, observation, or evaluation. It is something for measuring the skill, knowledge, intelligence, capacities, or aptitudes of an individual or group. Life is full of tests. Your children will test you. The man or woman in your life right now has really tested you more than you are willing to admit. Don’t allow the test or people to distort your character. Be determined to pass your test with an “A”! Passing the test will allow you to move to a higher level and have the ability to show someone else how you did it. You will be promoted. Have you ever been tempted to steal something? Okay, we normally won’t admit that. How about cheat on your taxes? Have you ever stolen someone’s spouse or companion? It’s hard to acknowledge those types of transgressions. We all have temptations. In itself, temptation is not sin however when we yield to it or plan to act on it, the sin is hard to stop and the guilt lingers even in your dreams. Temptation is a cause or occasion of enticement especially to evil. It is something negative that appeals to an individual or group. In hard times, we feel we have a right to sensual desires and a little evil. Don’t be the cause of another person’s temptation. It’s not worth it, my friend. It’s time for us to stand for righteousness. Any mind altering pleasure gives Satan a stronghold in your life. Let’s set a standard for others to see and duplicate. As long as there is a tomorrow, you have an opportunity to overcome your crisis. Don’t allow things around you to cause you to lose hope, you must trust in God. Be encouraged my dear Friend! 1 Corinthians 10:13 (The Message) 13No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.

My New Year’s Evolution!
The New Year is here! So this means….everybody is super excited about their new goals and resolutions! We are writing them down, posting them on the refrigerator, in our journals, or anywhere that will remind us of what we are supposed to accomplish this year. Well, for me the past few years I have done this, but is seems that come April, I have forgotten, misplaced, gotten detoured or simply just given up on those goals and put them off until next year. Can you relate? So realizing this I evaluated each year. I began to see a pattern; I set goals and resolutions that were unrealistic or unachievable at the time due to all that I was involved in or even where I was mentally. So I started thinking of ways that I can solve this problem…hopefully my new plan will be successful! I created my New Year’s Evolution Plan. I decided to use the word EVOLUTION instead of RESOLUTION because in order to achieve certain things I have to evolve and change in areas to make that possible. Often, we get so bogged down with pleasing others and making a life for ourselves that other important areas are left out. Between your marriage or relationship, soccer practice, ballet, gymnastics, football, homework, a full time job, as an adult student and much more, who can start something in the midst of all this? We choose New Year’s because it is looked to be a great starting point from all of life’s chaos the year before, but really we simply neglect balance in our lives and create those unrealistic goals. To better reach them I did these simple things. I started a list of all the things I wanted to accomplish over the next 5 years. Then I began to attach deadlines to them of when I desired to accomplish them, not thinking of any hindrances, just simply Now it’s time to create that realistic and achievable putting down what and when I wanted to achieve them. list! Young & Gifted Pushing through challenges
Author: Anonymous
Being young in this day and age is a challenge in itself! Dealing with peer pressure, drug addictions, promiscuity, early parenthood, bullying, dysfunctional homes and with this economy many struggle with poverty…all while trying to push through school and make something of their lives, while everyday they come closer to adulthood. It’s scary, because our youth have the feeling the weight of the world is on their shoulders…we expect so much from them, but we neglect to deal with the issues of their time. Many adults say “It’s not like the old days”, “Wow, this generation is something else” or “what has become of our youth?” As adults we have to help and guide our young people for they are the future leaders of the world! Pay attention, do not be naïve or neglect the changes. We as adults must take the responsibility of helping our children push through challenges! To my youth….are you affected daily by unfortunate circumstances, things that seem like you are never going to escape from, constantly feeling like you have to be strong for adults who surround you? Do you have responsibilities that are extremely overwhelming…do you find yourself asking why me?! If you are I am here to share my personal true story and tell you that you can make it! It has taken me a long time to share my story…I often times would just push through the problems and put them and my negative experiences in the back of my mind. For me to be just 26 years old I have experienced more in my life than most who know me would imagine. By looking at me I am well put together, educated, polite, and well mannered, but boy I have a story. There is a tale behind all of my success…and my success being that I am happy, not rich or wealthy but I have piece of mind, and am moving into my purpose!
11
It started when I was 6 years old and I remember my mother coming home, walking in with a cane. It was quite confusing then, but I eventually learned my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. This is a disease that affects the nervous system. Well, unfortunately it affected my mother’s legs. A few years later she went to walking with a walker and then she later became bedridden. Now I was fortunate to have my father in the home, but he was not in the greatest health either. By the time I was in high school, I could read physician charts by myself. I almost lost my parents to adverse health conditions. In the meantime, I was running the streets to try and escape from some of my struggles at home. This caused me to meet some untoward people; I hung around and dated the “D Boys”. I had verbally and physically abusive relationships by the time I was 15. I had the unfortunate experience of being forced to have sex against my will. Now at that time, I felt like I could not tell anyone, wondered who would believe me, but let me tell you ladies and gentlemen it is never okay when someone says NO, male or female; it means NO…no matter if they start off consensual then change their mind….NO MEANS NO! Forcing those traumatic events to the back of my mind, I still went to school everyday, took care of my younger brother, along with caring for my mother and often times my father. Sometimes I would come home and the lights, gas or water would be off, and we couldn’t flush the toilets or take hot showers. I have even wondered how we were going to eat at times. All of this before I was 17 years old. What got me through was my faith and strength. I believed and knew my purpose was to be great although my circumstances fought against every ounce of that belief. I was told that I wasn’t going to end up in a good place because I was in the streets so much, but that was my escape. Now after coming through my youth challenges, I learned I should have utilized that extra time better by doing something constructive. There were many times I could have studied, but didn’t. Many times I could have found a hobby or helped in the community, but I didn’t. I now wish I would have because I found that not all but some of my choices and pain could have been avoided. But sometimes as youth we feel we just want to do what we want to do. I felt that way, but now as an adult who has been through the toughest storms I realize sometimes what we want isn’t always good for us!
Young & Gifted My senior year I was devastated by the loss of one of my best friends. By then I had already lost many friends and close family to various aspects of life, but this one was different! Once we laid my best friend to rest, I returned home to a mother who did not recognize me…her body had developed an infection, it caused her to hallucinate and have some memory loss. I did not know what to do; my mother was dying before my eyes! My father was devastated, almost in a state of shock, so I had to get my mother together and take her to the hospital just to be told my mother would probably pass away in the next 2 days…so I prayed! I prayed harder than I ever prayed before! I had just lost my best friend and now my mother…I felt like what next?! It was my senior year in high school; I was working, making hospital visits, paying bills, and trying to still be a teenager. I felt so overwhelmed, but I felt I had to stay strong for everybody else. I often forgot about me, but God stepped in and I graduated. My mother lived to see me walk down the graduation aisle. As a matter of fact, she saw me get married and have two beautiful children. Looking back on my trials and circumstances, I was and am far from perfect. Many people looked down on me because of how I dressed, talked and acted. I felt so misunderstood, but I am a living witness that you can push through the challenges of your situation. Know the things in your life today are temporary, with every fight there is a victory. It was not by any means easy to deal with, acknowledge or accept, but by pushing through you will make it as I did. Here are some things as I looked at my past I wish I would have taken advantage: 1. Take time for me to do something CONSTRUCTIVE that I enjoy. (I.e. exercise, sports, writing, dancing, mentoring etc.) 2. Get involved with positive role models and peers. Eliminate those relationships that could hinder your future. Be a positive leader for them! 3. Find your place of peace. Find that place that no one can disturb. (I.e. a quiet place in the park, your happy place) this place is somewhere you can reflect and regroup so you won’t feel so overwhelmed 4. Respect yourself and others! If you demand respect and accept nothing less, you will find you are more confident and see the true colors and intentions of others 5. Express your feelings respectfully and constructively. Find someone trustworthy you can confide in that will help you through your problems and guide you to excellence. And last but not least! Remember YOU CAN accomplish anything to which you set your mind!!! Be and do your best, it will pay off and trouble doesn’t last always if you don’t allow it! BE, THINK, and ACT POSITIVE and watch your situation change!
Your Chance

A Chance is a new beginning some of us fail to take. Or a move that should be made, but we fail to make. Letting go and moving on could be a huge mistake or exactly what you need. Each new beginning is like the growth of a flower that started off as a seed. Some of us hide behind a mask, Stuck in a comfort zone living in the past, With a door right in front of us that we are too scared to open, Things will get better, but that is just what we have been hoping. The end is never the end. It just makes room for something new. The change doesn’t have to start with anyone else, let this new beginning start on the inside of you. 12
The Beauty Bar Author: Brittany Stewart, Cosmetologist HEALTHY HAIR, HEALTHY SKIN AND HOME HAIR CARE AND PRODUCTS Healthy hair is desired by all. In order to have healthy hair, understand that it starts with you. A perfect marriage for healthy hair is a great diet and great home maintenance. Did you know the foods you put in your mouth decide the health of your hair? The core foundation to beautiful hair, skin, and nails isn’t in expensive salon visits; it starts within the nutrients we consume. Vitamins A&C allow your body and scalp to produce sebum (the substance responsible for keeping the skin and hair moisturized). Sebum is natural protection on the hair, so the next time you make out that grocery list, make sure you don’t forget to put healthy hair ingredients at the top of the list. Include some of these items on your list: citrus fruits, carrots, leafy greens, kiwi, strawberries, cauliflower, and broccoli, to assure your hair is receiving the nutrients it needs and deserves. If eating healthy does wonders for your hair, then imagine what eating healthy can do for your skin. For skin care, look for foods that are high in fatty acids such as salmon, fruits, and walnuts. These forms of fatty acids are known as EFA (ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS) and they are crucial because our bodies do not produce them on their own. These EFAs keep our skin hydrated, supple, and highly moisturized. Those individuals who lack EFAs are prone to whiteheads, breaks in the skin, and blackheads. Who doesn’t want healthy skin?
Water is essential to healthy skin and hair. It is recommended we consume 8-12 glasses of water a day. Along with water, include a good night’s rest. Water and adequate sleep keeps you hydrated and your skin looking pure. That is a very small price to pay for beautiful skin and hair.

We all know the hard part of maintaining a hairstyle is once you get home from the salon. Here are some things you can do at home when you are unable to make it to see your stylist at the salon: 1. Always remember to do three shampoos. The first two shampoos should be a cleansing shampoo. The cleansing shampoos strip the hair of all oils and build ups of previous products. The second shampoo does the follow-up to get anything that was left behind and to guarantee cleanliness. 2. Follow with the final moisturizing shampoo. This shampoo is critical; it replenishes and deposits moisture back into the hair. 3. Your final step is conditioner. Towel blot the hair, removing any excess water. Comb through and rinse with cool water; this locks in the moisture. *Remember, never comb through wet hair with a small tooth comb. It can cause breakage. The Comfort Zone At e m Ho The world has gotten so invasive and our society’s personal space has definitely been overrun by the world of technology and always having the “Go, Go, Go Syndrome”. So while you wander the world during your daily life, let us help you find your peace in the comfort of your own home. Let’s design your “Comfort Zone”. First things first, Find inspirations! This can be anything…anything that inspires you or brings happiness to you. It can be colors, architecture, sculptures or even things such as food! You can find inspirations every where. If you see something, take a picture and keep it so you can refer back. Once you have a few inspira tions, paste them in a journal and then evaluate them. 1. Colors…with color always go with colors that reflect the mood you want when you walk into your home. Example: If you want a calm space full of Zen, then go with blues and greens. Going for more energetic and fun…go with orange and red hues. Shades of yellow can be used to accent the above colors or perk up certain spaces. 2. Architecture and Sculpture can inspire you to apply shape and dimension into your space, to personalize it with creativity. But do not overdo it; you want your space to be a home not a mu seum unless it is a conservatively displayed collection. 3. Food, Fashion and as I call them “Random” inspirations, are for those that have the “out of the box” thought process. You see the beauty in something as simple as a double layered raspberry filled chocolate cake or a ruffled blouse with a high collar. When you come across such things, it reminds you of something and you get an idea! This is totally normal. Use these things to showcase that type of thinking in your home. Your home has many dimensions and spaces so find one room at a time to start recreating your com fort zone. You may use more than one inspiration throughout, but make sure your design is cohesive for you so when you return home and walk through the doors of your place, your shoulders relax and you smile!

Understanding your credit…
Mature Money
Author Lisa Gilliard, M.B.A., M.A.
Remember the old cliché “Cash is King” well this year let it be known that “Credit trumps Cash.” Most consumers only begin to think about their credit scores when they want to purchase something new. Having a good credit score is not only important for impulse buying, but for consumers planning to apply for a loan or credit card in the future. In the current economic downturn, lenders are reluctant to lend to consumers with less than perfect credit. Thus, individuals with credit challenges should become proactive about resolving credit problems and improving their scores. In order to begin, consumers must understand what a credit score is. It’s a calculated number by a credit bureau or lender that assesses the consumer’s financial responsibility. One may also hear lenders refer to the credit score as a “FICO” score or “rating”. The credit score has several attributes the consumer must understand. The higher the score the more likely the consumer will get a loan with a lower interest rate which will result in a lower monthly payment. Lower credit scores have the ability to negatively affect a consumer’s employment opportunities, residence, and insurance quotes. How can one improve her credit score to receive the best offers and lower rates? Review your credit report for erroneous information. Go to a free credit reporting website such as www.freecreditreport.com, input your information and review what is on your credit report. Credit reports issued by any of the three credit bureaus (Trans Union, Experian, Equifax) detail an individual’s financial history,(indicating how you have paid your bills in the past or if there are any judgments or bankruptcy filings) which is used to develop the consumer’s credit worthiness. It is important to review your credit score periodically, especially if you intend to purchase something new in the upcoming months. More importantly, as a consumer, you are checking to make sure there is no negative information attached to your credit report and decreasing your overall score. A best practice is to request credit reports from all three bureaus as the information on the reports may differ. Here is a breakdown of what you will see in a credit report: The credit report will be in sections. The first section will have detailed information about the borrower such as the consumer’s name, address, social security number and employment information. The second section, depending on the credit bureau, will indicate any red flag alerts (i.e., fraud, alternate names or social security numbers). The third section will indicate the FICO score. The FICO score will be in the form of a three digit number that can range between 350 and 800. The higher the score means the better the credit. The next section will show the consumer’s trade summary. In this section, one may see several types of credit (i.e., revolving accounts, installment, education loans, and collections), high credit balances, payment history, past due balances, and late payments. Late payments are recorded in thirty day increments (i.e., 30, 60, and 90). The next section on the report will indicate the number of trade lines for the consumer. This section is usually the bulk of the consumer’s report. Trade lines can be credit cards, revolving accounts (i.e., furniture accounts, jewelry store accounts), student loans, etc. The credit report will also dictate if a consumer has any public records on file. The final section of the report will have businesses that reported to the consumer’s credit and a list of phone numbers. If you see any alerts or items that were not purchased dispute each item immediately as it may be a sign of fraudulent activity on your credit. By law, every person is entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three credit bureaus. Call toll-free 1-877-322-8228. For more information visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website: www.ftc.gov/bcp/menus/consumer/credit/reports.shtm The aforementioned information was taken from the FDIC website. “Coco” Chanel said it best, “Every woman should be classy and fabulous!” Every woman can be just that, but Ladies we have some work to do! Unfortunately our current day society has labeled and stereotyped many of us from the “Hood Chick” to the “Bourgeoisie Power Woman!” Many of us are guilty of looking at the woman sitting next to us and referring to her as one of the above or many other unfortunate names, but ladies I am here to help us all find a balance. We all need some street smarts, book smarts, to be corporate industry educated and able to keep a home! I call this “Domestic Management”. So let’s start with CLASS...Being classy is a state of being not just a look, having extravagant things, or the way you act at times. It is a way of life. This area gets touchy…I may hit home to many of you, but in order to impart knowledge of what is inappropriate sometimes you just have to say it. It’s all out of love so here we go!
A Classy Lady is: 1. Always put together and doesn’t step out into public looking like she just rolled out of bed. This means…No rollers, No house slippers or house coats, No Bed Head (unless that is the edgy look you are going for, but be tasteful), No head scarves and No PJ’s. Anything that is meant for bed or house wear is not appropriate for anything other than the HOUSE! 2. Always filters what comes from her mouth. This means…no cursing, not being obnoxiously loud or over the top in inappropriate settings. You never know who is watching…taming our public behavior is very necessary. 3. Keeps a clean home…Now ladies we do not have to be the next Martha Stewart, but we need to make sure your home is inviting and neat. Your home is a representation of your lifestyle. What does your home say about you? The more you practice these things the better you will feel and the more self confident you will become about your daily life…
23
4. Every classy woman is aware of her surroundings and practices etiquette...she is in tune with her atmosphere and can adapt to it…NO this is NOT being FAKE …it is simply adapting and presenting yourself well! Some women are already aware of and practicing the process and for others it may feel uncomfortable, but the more you learn to adapt in unfamiliar or different situations the easier it becomes and you’ll begin to notice, no matter where you are, you are able to speak intelligently because you never know what opportunities may be opened! 5. Knows how to handle conflicts with educated words…Ladies plan and simple…no fighting, no cursing people out because they took your parking spot, Do Not give someone the finger (we know which one) just because they did something improper on the road. These are not the only attributes to having class but they are a start, though not to worry, we will explore other areas.

Classy & Fabulous Continued...
Now let’s get fabulous…
The fun thing about being fabulous is that every woman has their own special and unique way of being fabulous. Now, we have to keep in mind those tips for being classy, but the fabulous part is where our personality comes in. Be Unique…Stand out...Go above and beyond, always give your best! By consistently doing this someone is sure to notice and it will pay off! Whether it is for a job, school or your personal lives…find your niche and go! Be Confident...We all have flaws; we all are far from perfect! Love YOU…Self love is the best recipe for fabulousness, when you love yourself everyone else has no choice but to do the same…just be careful not to be overly cocky or conceited… that is not what we are trying to accomplish. It is ok to be a little Selfish…often times we do so much for others we forget ourselves! Take time for you whether it be a massage, spa day, dinner with yourself and a book, or simply just lay in bed and snuggle in those blankets! Be Health conscious…we have to get fit and keep ourselves together…there are some things we cannot avoid, but we can be fabulous in spite of it. Knowing your health status is the key to being able to function properly in all other areas. See your physicians routinely and stay on top of any concerns! Well ladies let’s get to work and start our New Classy and Fabulous Life! Best!!! 24

Know Your Number!
Author: Saundra Adcock, LPN
This is the time of year to think about you. Being healthy is different for everyone, but one thing we all need to be concerned about is high blood pressure. Hypertension is the medical term used to describe high blood pressure. Blood pressure is usually taken with an arm-pressure cuff. The reading is given as two separate numbers: for example 120/80. The top number is your systolic pressure, the pressure created when your heart beats. It is considered high if it is consistently over 140. The bottom number is your diastolic pressure, the pressure inside blood vessels when the heart is at rest. It is considered high if consistently over 90. High blood pressure can affect almost every organ in the body. It can lead to other serious health problems. Many factors can affect blood pressure, such as the amount of water and salt in your body, the condition of your kidneys, nervous system or blood vessels, and also levels of different body hormones. You have a higher risk of hypertension if you have a family history of the disease. Hypertension may not present symptoms in the beginning. But some symptoms that may occur are: chest pain, confusion, ringing in the ears, difficulty breathing, swelling of the legs, flushing of the face, headaches, dizziness or blurred vision. These are just a few of the possible symptoms and you may not display them at the same time. This is a condition that used to affect people over the age of forty. The age is starting to drop due to the health and out of control eating habits of our children. The electronic age is definitely producing more visual entertainment and less physical movement. Sitting or lying around watching television is becoming an all too familiar pass time in our homes. The human body was made to move. When we were younger it was hard to slow us down if there was space to run and have fun we took advantage of it. With the desire to become healthier there are several things that can be done. The first is to visit your doctor to have your blood pressure checked. This is creating a baseline in your medical history so if or when you feel sick, a record will be able to show what is normal for you. If there is a neighborhood pharmacy near you, ask the pharmacist where the free blood pressure cuff is located in the store. Next, lose weight slowly; reduce the amount of food consumed. Eat more fruits and vegetables as close to natural as you can get. Steam your vegetables or sautÊ them in chicken broth, instead of butter or oil for a different flavor. Drink more water because your kidneys will appreciate it. Do not use over the counter diet pills because most of them will cause your blood pressure to rise. If you and your doctor think a prescription will help with your weight loss then follow that plan. Daily exercise is part of your new healthy lifestyle. Make sure the exercise you choose is something you will keep up at least three times a week. Walking, biking, skating, and jogging are just some suggestions—but do something. This is definitely the beginning of a new year. Join me in making it a healthy one.

Beautiful Belize
In the northeastern corner of Central America lies beautiful Belize. It offers some of the most magnificent coastal views, both above and below sea level. Belize has amazing landscaping, extensive archeological sites, and wildlife that out does any destination in the region, and it’s clear to see why the number of visitors to this tiny country increases every year. Belize consists of slightly more sea than land. The beautiful shorelines seem to be the main attraction. Just offshore is one of the country’s, and the continent’s, most astonishing natural wonders – the astounding turquoise shallows and cobalt depths of the longest barrier reef in the Americas. Beneath the surface, a dazzling world of fish and coral awaits divers and snorkelers. A chain of islands known as Cayes, scattered along the entire reef, protects the mainland from the ocean swell and holds more than a hint of tropical paradise. Belize has rich tropical forests that include a tremendous range of wildlife, including howler and spider monkeys, tapirs and pumas, jabiru storks and scarlet macaws. In addition to these natural attractions, Belize possesses an abundance of archeological remains. They feature ruins of the ancient cities of the Maya, the civilization that dominated the area from around 2000 BC until the arrival of the Spanish. Belize is an amazing place to visit. Book your trip and experience it for yourself! Information found on www.roughguides.com

Porscheia Samuels This month’s featured young adult is Porscheia Samuels (pronounced Por-sha). She is 21 years old, and resides in Atlanta Georgia by way of Seattle Washington. When Porscheia was 13, she was diagnosed with a condition called seizures. At present, doctors are unable to determine the cause of her seizures or why Porscheia began having them at the age of 13. Porscheia recalled the doctors running multiple tests on her. They removed tissue from her thigh for testing to determine the cause. Unfortunately, the doctors were unsuccessful which confused Porscheia and caused her to go into a depression. She revealed she once wanted to commit suicide. She has had multiple surgeries, the most serious being brain surgery. The operation was performed to remove the area of the brain that caused the seizures, but during the procedure they were only able to see where it ended not began, and going further into the brain would have increased the chances of her being paralyzed. Not being able to remove all the tissue meant Porscheia still had high chances of continuing to have seizures. She recalls being told she had to have surgery, the doctors advised her they had to cut off all of her hair. Her mother shared the experience and also shaved her head to help her daughter get through the traumatic ordeal. Later, doctors placed a metal nerve stimulator called a VNS, inside her chest. In the event of a grand mal seizure (most extreme seizure), a metal bracelet is rubbed across the stimulator to help minimize the effect and the suffering she may experience during a seizure. Porscheia is the youngest of four children which includes her brother Willie Jr. 27, and sisters Shawndreica 29 and Shaletha 31. None of her siblings were diagnosed with this condition. Porscheia takes five different medications during the day and this has contributed to her being seizure-free this year! She thanks God who she has learned to trust and who has strengthened her over the years. She also thanks her parents, Evelyn and DiAngelo, who have done nothing but support her and sacrificed so much to help her through this difficult journey. Being sick unfortunately caused her to miss most of her high school classes requiring her to complete her coursework through the Special Education program when she returned to school. She isn’t ashamed and credits listening to Marvin Sapp’s gospel song, “Never Would Have Made It”, with encouraging her to walk across the stage on graduation day and receive her high school diploma while her family cheered. She shared she is stronger, wiser, and much better and knows God wants her to share her story! She says when she is strong enough, she plans to further her education in Fashion Design and eventually have her own clothing line. Porscheia has definitely proven that through Christ you can do all things!
