Welcome to the World of DLANG One of Indy’s Fashion Leading Ladies Author: CLM Editorial Team

Creative Design Producer, who immaculately produces fashion design and events. With Associates in Fashion Merchandising and Associates in Business Administration from Harrison College, she has flourished and is still rising in the fashion industry in Indianapolis, Indiana. DLANG is a part of the Indianapolis Fashion Collective, American Sewing Guild, and also on the advisory board of Harrison College - Fashion Committee. As Founder and Producer of INDY FASHION TIME, DLANG, launched her first fashion show at age 16. Fast forward 12 years later and she hasn’t missed a stitch, producing numerous events while enhancing sewing skills, she studied under seamstress guru Peggy Garrett and has continued to take construction classes. After producing, personal assisting, managing, volunteering, modeling, going to school and more, she was drained! DLANG stated “I felt like I was doing too much. I had lots of experience, but lacked funding and time to really focus on my line and myself. I figured I could be more effective if I established an annual event to bring resources to designers while expanding networking with other major fashion companies/leaders.” Thus, IFT [INDY FASHION TIME] was born. “It was important for me to have an annual fashion event held in Indiana and for Indy to be in the name. I was concerned at first because I didn’t want people to think it was just an Indiana event. The major fashion states have their names in shows and people all over the world come. It’s about putting out a good product/service and putting Indy in the name helps guests to start recognizing what Indiana has to offer. I also believe that you shouldn’t wait to do what your heart is leading you to do. The time is now, start where you are and work with what you have. So, that’s why time is in the name as well.” IFT is in its 4th year and DLANG is extremely excited! She stated, “It’s amazing to see what comes out of a year of advanced planning. Putting together an event is a roller coaster, but the thrill of the end result is amazing! I just keep thinking that IFT is bigger than me; it’s a global fashion movement.” Continued on page 10 Photography: Andrea Smith, Studio 57 Photography. Styling: DaNisha Greene, Yours In Fashion. Divine Living

LET GO ! Author Pastor Patsy Martin, Spiritual Director

How often have you been told to get over it! Stop wasting time! Move on! Just let it go! Throughout life’s journey, there will be opportunities to dwell in the past, or live in the present. Let’s look at three areas many people are challenged in letting go. Why do we hold on to dead relationships? Why do we grieve excessively over something or someone who will never return or who is fearful of commitment? Why is it so hard to forgive someone that has hurt us? Letting go makes room for change and new relationships. Letting go is a choice. Singles, why hold on to a dead relationship when he has made it clear he is not ready to take the relationship further? We settle and allow it to be a relationship of convenience, based on fleshly desires and no true commitment. The relationship has no value. Are you worth anything? What’s your value? Low self esteem causes one to put oneself on sale to the highest bidder. A woman of virtue and character is worth more than jewels. She’s priceless. A man can recognize her from far off. If, however, you’ve allowed a man to treat you like cut glass, it’s time to let him GO! Let go of that loser mindset! You are better than that! You can’t go forward with the person God has for you, if you are holding on to Mr. Wrong! Read Philippians 3:13, 14 in its entirety. My favorite part is: “forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the mark for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus”. Let go of anything that would hinder you from going forward in Christ and life. He’s not worth it if he devalues you and there is no commitment or next level in the relationship. Anyone who doesn’t help you grow you must let go.

Many of us have precious memories of loved ones that have gone home to be with the Lord. Good memories will last forever and our loved one can never be replaced. Yes, we still love and miss them however after a reasonable period of time, mature people learn how to pull themselves together and move forward and let them go. Our loved ones would not want us to grieve so long until it becomes unhealthy and causes depression. The reality is that we all will die or be caught up to see Jesus. Treat your loved ones right while they are alive and when they leave this earth you will know you did your best for them. It truly brings peace in an otherwise difficult situation. Be happy for them. They are no longer in pain or suffering the sting of death. If your family member is in heaven, Praise the Lord, you have an opportunity to see them again. Stop trying to resurrect them and let them rest in peace. It is extremely difficult to let go of past hurts especially when the injury was intentional. My friend, whether the hurt was intentional or accidental, believers must forgive. Church hurt is one of the deepest scars to get over however with God’s help we can forgive and trust again. A willingness to have an unforgiving spirit causes us to live in bondage and may ultimately cause us to miss heaven. Matthew 6:14-15 (Amplified Bible) “For if you forgive people their trespasses [their [a] reckless and willful sins, [b] leaving them, letting them go, and [c]giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses [their [d]reckless and willful sins, [e]leaving them, letting them go, and [f]giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses.” Letting go is a growth process. There are growing pains. There are some ups and downs. The key is to stay focused on Jesus Christ. All you have to do is have a good memory. Just think of the things which God forgave you. Many times, we cheated on the Lord with the enemy. There were times we rejected God however he loved us while we were yet sinners. Christ died so that we could receive newness of life. So forgiving has a lot to do with your relationship with God and others. Let Go of past hurts. Heaven is worth it! It’s your choice to live in bondage or to let go and reach things that stunt your growth. Be mature. Renew your mind. Cast down imaginations and choose to let it go! It’s time to press forward. Letting go will help you live a stress-free and purpose-driven life in Jesus Christ. God has so much more in store for you. See yourself victorious and free from all hindrances. Remember Romans 8:28 and we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. It happened for a reason and a season; however, God promised through every situation it will work together for our good if we love the Lord. Trust God. If you know you are holding on to something that continuously vexes your spirit or steals your peace…just let it go! Pastor Patsy and Minister Odis Martin Invite you to come worship with the congregation of

Attraction to Distraction There are times when we are on the right path for personal growth and development; we have conquered realistic goals one by one. We have begun to LIVE life and not just EXIST, and then without knowing it, we slowly begin to slip and BOOM, hello Distraction. For some reason in the human psyche there’s a level of “attraction” to distraction. I believe I have become an expert at creating distractions for myself. I could avoid getting anything done. Whenever I had something to do that had a time limit on it, I would find myself watching television, facebooking, or even attempting to clean or “organize”. Most people would ask what’s wrong with cleaning or organizing. Here’s the problem it’s a major distraction because we have gotten off the pathway to what we were supposed to be doing. Sometimes, we do have a one-track mind, focusing on what has been presented to us as attraction, at the same undermining the priorities in our life. Distractions can also come in the form of relationships. Not all relationships are healthy and at some point become toxic. When you find yourself constantly getting off track because you have an emergency in your relationship, say hello to distraction. A distraction is anything that prevents you from giving your full attention to something or someone, as you should. It takes up time and energy which could be better spent somewhere else and its’ drain on productivity can be substantial. If our time is occupied with distractions, then something or someone is being neglected from having the benefit of our time, money, talents, and attention. Here are three simple steps on how to stop distraction dead in its track. 1. Derail Your Distractions With The Flick Of A Switch • Don’t allow yourself a second of the distracting activity; instead channel that energy to the real task at hand. • You can do this by looking at your thoughts like trains on a track – you can easily change tracks with the flick of a lever or give those distracting thoughts the red signal and the productive ones the green light! • The next time you sense an upcoming distracting thought steaming towards you just flick that signal switch and send it up the line of production and not distraction. This takes practice but you can master it. 2. Fast Forward To The Future • If you have tasks that need completing which are important to you take a few seconds to think about WHY they are important to you – what are they going to bring you in the long run, what are the benefits, what are they going to move you closer towards? • Sometimes instead of focusing on the task at hand (which might not always inspire or enthuse you) think of the end result – how you’ll feel, what you will have achieved, how proud you’ll be – put a smile on your face as you knock that distraction on the head and start making progress towards the life you truly deserve! • Give yourself a pep talk as if you have already achieved the goal this task will move you closer towards. What would you say to yourself to make sure you got this done? • Fast forward to the future and imagine you never do any of the tasks you need to do. Pile on and pour on the pain factor of how horrible your life would be if you never took any steps towards your goal. Then REWIND to the present and you’ll soon stop that distraction! 3. Wave A Big, Fat, Juicy Carrot In Front Of Your Face • The moment you’re about to start the distracting activity tempt yourself with a reward you will give yourself for completing the REAL task – something that you really enjoy like a particular type of food, watching a movie, or going out with a friend. • Remember the things you least want to do are often the most important. You might not have a problem with this, but I’ve found it to be true personally. If there’s a particular task you are dragging your heels on or are reluctant to get started or continue then it’s likely it is actually this task that will move you forward the most. Finally the key to distraction and attraction is to remain whole in the midst of the distractions of life; to remain balanced, no matter what those attractions are that tend to pull us off center; to remain strong, no matter what distractions come in our life. You can’t afford to let distractions get in the way of you and your deserved success. Treat a distracting thought as a signal for you to knuckle down and get the task completed. The distraction only came to your mind in the first place because you slowed down in doing the task right!

Cover Story DLANG Continued... All of this came from a great foundation and motivation from those most dear to DLANG. DLANG expressed, “My mom doesn’t realize it, but she peeked my interest in fashion. She had me modeling when I was in elementary school. I don’t remember it, so I enjoy looking at the pictures. When I was 16, I produced my first presentation in Cosmetology school. I had no idea what I was doing; I just knew I wanted to. My family helped and were the models. When I got on stage I knew I belonged there and this was what I wanted to do. Days after I went to a producer to help plan the next show. Long story short, they took some of my ideas and no longer needed me. I was so hurt and went to talk to my dad and he calmly said why don’t you do your own show? My dad is my mentor; he left a decent paying job to start his own transportation company. I see his struggles and now it’s been almost 4 years and he’s still at it. He may not be millionaire status on paper, but he’s more than that in heart. He works for himself doing something he loves and he’s really making a difference in the patient’s lives. I want to be that type of person who contributes to society in a positive way. I feel that I was chosen and this is part of my purpose. Knowing that all things work together for good through God and I’m just focusing on what He wants me to do. Personally, I focus on family and professionally continue to grow IFT and develop a women’s fashion line called DLANG. It can be difficult because my creative mind is always coming up with ideas. My husband is the one who reminds me to take a break and do stuff outside of fashion for inspiration and relaxation.” As DLANG left us she gave us her favorite quote and piece of advice… “Never Give Up!” she continued saying, “Really focus on what you want to do and not let anyone detour you from your dreams. Also, be realistic on what it’s going to take and how much it’s going to cost, but not letting cost or circumstance get in the way. Do your research, reach out to people/business, share, be positive, respect others and never give up!” DLANG may be contacted at IFT [Indy Fashion Time], P.O. Box 22272, Indianapolis, In 46222, info@iftworld. com, www.iftworld.com or www.dlangfashions.com.

Need to Suceed

Author: Tiffany Lockridge

Succeed is defined as to achieve, to be successful at something. Successful is defined as victorious, winning or triumphant. To some these two meanings can and do appear differently to different individuals. To others it may mean the same thing. Undoubtedly either is a good thing to have in your life! In simple terms, to be successful just means you have reached your goal of success and you’re comfortable with your accomplishments and the level of success you have reached. To succeed, just means that you are in a constant progression of success. Each year or more you have reached and accomplished another goal.

How can you succeed or become successful? •

Having a life plan is never easy, but can be done. You can start yours today with these steps: Establish a plan or goal (write a novel, hairstylist, fashion design, be an entrepreneur)

This isn’t done over night; however, at some point you have had a dream or two of what you want to be when you grow up. Choose goals that will add value and substance to your life. • Apply yourself Become motivated, committed, and empowered. Be careful with whom you share your dream. Everyone will not understand your goal. Surround yourself with others that have similar goals or are on a path to be successful. DO NOT seek celebrity, seek wisdom! You can’t follow everyone you see on television. Become your own brand! Don’t be afraid to stand alone! • Pursue your goal Once you realize you are ready to begin with your plan (you have accomplished steps 1 & 2) seek wisdom and study your goal. Set yourself an attainable timeline that will allow you to reach those goals and be able to bounce back if sidetracked. • Begin to speak success into your life Envy is not a bad thing; it’s just an indication of your very own desires. Turn that envy into positive energy and begin to speak those things you see someone else with and speak it over your own life! Everything after “I am…” holds power. Life and death is in the power of the tongue. So speak your success into existence today! I will start. I am powerful, I am beautiful, I am strong, I am bold, I am confident, I am successful and I have a need to succeed!

From the Minds of Our Youth

A Tribute to Our Mothers One Love

Like a beautiful flower she blooms, With the love she has had for you from the womb. A touch irreplaceable, A caress unmistakable. A tenderness some will take for granted, A bond greater than any other on the planet. Her weeping eyes pierce your heart with pain and you ask why? Here storm is your rain; your joy is her life. Do not delay or mute you feelings, Open you heart for a mother’s healing, The one who will advise you, for she may just be the only one willing. Providing, protecting and giving her best. As your mother’s child, you may have been your mothers test, But at the end of the day there was always one chest you could cry on, One love you could forever rely on. Pride is one thing but let’s make mama proud, When she stops by your new house have her stay for awhile. Who said tomorrow was promised? Who promised today? Send your mother love while she can still see your face.

The Beauty Bar REAL ME… TRUE BEAUTY…LOVE N’ ME Author: Brittany Stewart, Cosmetologist

LOVING THE REAL ME HAS BEEN A VERY HARD THING TO DO IN LIFE. WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL? AM I BEAUTIFUL? EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN OPINON OF BEAUTY, SO I HAD TO DEVELOP MY OWN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TRUE BEAUTY IS FOR ME. WITH THE SPRING SEASON APPROACHING I WANTED TO FINALLY, STOP MASKING AND HIDING BEHIND THE HAIR AND MAKE-UP AND GET TO THE REAL ME, UNDERSTAND MY TRUE BEAUTY AND START LOVE N’ ME. A TIME FOR CHANGE… I HAVE BEEN WEARING WEAVES FOR OVER 17 YEARS AND I REALIZED I ONLY FELT BEAUTIFUL WITH HAIR AND WAS TERRIFIED WITH THE THOUGHT OF ME AND MY REAL HAIR. THE MORE I THOUGHT ABOUT IT I REALIZED I NEEDED TO GET OVER IT. I PICKED UP MY CLIPPERS AND WENT THROUGH MY ENTIRE HEAD. EVERY STROKE OF HAIR THAT FELL FROM MY HEAD I FELT RELIEVED , I FELT FREE, I FELT I WAS LETTING GO OF PAIN AND HURT, I GUESS A SIMPLE WAY TO PUT IT IS I FELT TRANSPARENT. MY CHANGE MADE ME FEEL EMPOWERED AND UNSTOPPABLE. I HAVE A TAKE ME AS I AM ATTITUDE AND I LOVE IT. MY HAIR DOESN’T MAKE ME BEAUTIFUL. I AM BEAUTIFUL INSIDE AND OUT. I NOW WALK WITH MY HEAD HELD HIGH. NEVER BE AFRAID OF CHANGE, BECAUSE IT MAY JUST BE WHAT YOU NEED TO DO. TRY IT! GET STARTED ON THE REAL YOU. I ENJOY MY NATURAL BEAUTY AND I HAVE MADE ME LEARN TO RECOGNIZE WHO I AM. I WAKE UP AND PROUDLY LOOK IN THE MIRROR. I ENJOY MY FACE AND I LOVE TO ADD TO ME AND MY NEW LOOK. I HAVE EVEN STARTED TO CHANGE OTHER AREAS IN MY LIFE AS WELL. LETTING GO OF THINGS IS A CLEANSING EXPERIENCE. SOMETIMES WE NEED TO JUST LET GO OF THINGS AND PEOPLE THAT HOLD US DOWN. ALL THE STRESSORS TAKE A TOLL ON US EMOTIONALLY AND THE WAY WE FEEL ABOUT OURSELVES IS AFFECTED. BEAUTY IS AN INTERNAL POWER WE AS WOMEN NEED TO CONSTANTLY POSSESS. YOU SHOULD CONSIDER CHANGING THINGS SUCH AS HAIR STYLES, HAIR COLORS, MAKE-UP, AND CLOTHING. WE AS WOMEN SHOULD CONSTANTLY FEEL BEAUTIFUL BECAUSE WE ARE MOTHERS, WIVES, SISTERS, FRIENDS, DOCTORS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS, ETC. WHEN WE FEEL BEAUTIFUL WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE AND THAT POWER EXUDES FROM US AND CAUSE US TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. THROUGH MY CHANGES AND BEING COMPLETELY HONEST WITH MYSELF I HAVE LEARNED HOW IMPORTANT KEEPING ME HAPPY AND FEELING BEAUTIFUL REALLY IS. WE NEED TO TAKE THE ESSENTIAL STEPS TO STAY ON TOP OF OUR LIVES SO WE CAN SMILE FROM WITHIN.

~ Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical. -SOPHIA LOREN

I may empower women by enhancing they’re beauty with hair and fashion which is what some of the hottest talent in Indianapolis did at the 13th annual Women’s Empowerment Series at the Murat Theatre. I had the pleasure of catching up with a group of women who empower and enhance the beauty and fashion of women individually daily. For this special occasion they came together to fight the elements while being fabulous. Dorothy Bagwell, hair stylist at Divine Design Hair Studio, has been creating couture hair styles for over 22 years and lives to make women look gorgeous and loves to transform them. Her specialty is healthy hair color and precision cutting. Shareatha Brown is a hair stylist at Shar’s Hair Wig Boutique and has been in business since 2007. She specializes in non-surgical hair replacement and her personal experience to start in the field was dealing with alopecia herself. She carries everyday looks and special occasion or formal hair wigs as well. She also helps women obtain their wigs at no charge if they are needed due to medical hair loss like alopecia. In those cases they would be able to go through their insurance for coverage of the expenses. She provided six wigs in the show and prides herself on being able to restore the confidence in those who may need it renewed due to hair loss. Nicolette Catanzarite is not only a hair stylist and owner of Fond Du Lac Salon & Exquisite Boutique, but she’s been in the business for 24 years as a stylist and this is her 9th salon. She started doing hair when she was 5 years old and she specializes in color correction. She did the color for their salon’s segment of the show and the models are wearing jewelry from her boutique. Constance Foster was the natural hair stylist for their segment of the show and specializes in interesting styling of natural hair that’s unique and healthy.

Sabea Ellis, event coordinator, was the coordinator of the two salons joint segment that was presented in the show. Sabea not only came up with the theme/concept for the show and the creative way to incorporate the company names of all parties involved into the theme, she also linked all the aspects of their segment together including makeup artists, models, mistress of ceremony, and designers. Their theme was “Ellis Events presents: A divine design meets Shar’s Hair with a Fon Du Loc flair...Fighting the elements” and that is what they certainly did. What I liked most about this Women’s Empowerment Series hair show amongst others is each salon told a story and for the most part kept their skits very classy. Their concept was to show how different one’s hair can be worn depending on the elements and they fused fashion that was cohesive with the looks they were going for. Clothes were provided by Indianapolis Designer Nikki Blaine of Nikki Blaine Couture who had several different pieces from various collections in the show which complimented the various elements. Along with Indianapolis Designer Jamie L. Dampier of Eimaj Designs who provided not only avant-garde pieces for ice and fire, but some fierce bejeweled platform shoes and a truly avant-garde neck piece worn as a shirt which made me think of Lady Gaga. Whether fire or ice it was creative and their accessories were provided by Secrets of Hollywood formally (Hollywood Fashunz) & Tina Polk of Cre8tive Expressions. The shoes were provided by Signature Shoes and they used a variety of pumps, booties, boots and sandals. There were sequins, animal prints, and patterns so being a shoe connoisseur I definitely enjoyed them. The fantasy and couture hair combined with high fashion and avant-garde clothes, makeup, accessories and shoes fused the elements fabulously and I felt it empowered women to be bold and beautiful. 16

Color the Runway: ‘All Colors are Equal in the Dark....’ Yes, I may color the Runway with chic, ethnic, tribal, traditional, and American style. I was truly impressed with FTW’s (Fight The Wackiness) Art & Fashion Show on IUPUI’s campus. This showcase of students, young designers, and artists was truly an inspiration to all. The organization FTW was created “to empower young people to pursue their dreams against all odds. They focus on encouraging them to explore opportunities to develop their passion. A campaign formed to create a balance in the influences for young adults.” They actually assist students with the opportunity for hands on experience in the field of interest to them. That experience is not as an intern running errands, but the actual day to day operations in the career path. After learning about their mission and purpose I was even more intrigued to see what they would do with the arts, especially Fashion of course. The venue was perfect, great lighting, hardwood floors, spacious, and chic. There were tons of color in all aspects of the show as we traveled across the continents and into a world full of diversity in fashion. From the models, to the color choice, fabric, embellishments, and looks I was truly impressed. We started off in Africa with modern and western twists. The designer Rumbidzai Matemachani of Rungano Rwedu took traditional African garb patterns, but used them on rompers, gaucho pants, bustiers, and fishtail skirts. Nothing was traditional about the looks and with the tribal and animal prints being amongst the new hot trends she will definitely sell out of the line she presented. They also had a Moroccan or Bollywood segment where they showcased traditional Indian saris that were absolutely beautiful. I would definitely categorize them in the evening wear or fab after 5 looks that I love. There wasn’t a designer, but a young lady by the name of Urooj Anna Qureshi who provided her personal garments for the show. She said what she loves about her heritage is you can think of any type of fabric, beading, color, print or pattern and the women in her hometown will make them for you with ease. We then came over to the Western continent we call home and designer Koko Brownlow gave us crazy mixtures of prints and patterns with fun clothes for young girls and the young at heart. I loved her use of polka dots and zebra prints. She used bright bold colors, and off the shoulder blouses paired with cool glasses as well as skirts with tulle accompanied by bowties and bright patterned leggings. I thought her collection was fun and playful. Finally, they had the founder of FTW Scott Evans and his partners’ line which consisted of an urban, but almost skater/nomad-like apparel line. Scott and his partners’ line introduced me to the button down hoodies, and cashmere almost business causal hoodies that could be dressed up or down and worn with any type of jean, boot especially a combat rusted color pair, sneaker, or dress shoe. Very casual and cools looks which were still modern however extremely unique. This line is for those men who always want that fashionable feel though they never want to look overly done up. Body Magic

Fashion Fit

Yes, I may dress the part by wearing clothes that fit my body. When you think of body magic you may think of the new craze that’s similar to Spanx, but not quite the same. These items are all a part of the girdle family which is one of man’s greatest inventions. Instead of focusing on undergarments to help smooth, suck in, or temporarily correct our imperfections I’m talking about outer wear. What we actually get to see, your clothes of course, is the most important body magic of them all. We can enhance our positives and camouflage our ‘needs improvement’ areas just by dressing the part. If you have a pear, round, box, hour glass, v, or straight up and down shape, dressing your part can enhance, create, and eliminate issues. For example, if you’re top heavy and you want to make your breasts appear smaller besides wearing a great minimizing bra with an underwire that lifts and separates, you also want to stay away from turtle necks and crew necks. The myth of covering up is just that, a myth. You do however want to wear V necks, scoop necks, and shirts with buttons. You can leave at least the top 2 or 3 buttons open so you can break up the shirt with skin appearing sexy yet still classy. If you have a small waist line and want to accentuate it, but maybe you have wide hips you’re not too fond of, wearing a belted dress below the knee is best for you. You should stay away from pants with exaggerated pockets or prints and dresses with ruching on the hip area. You still can wear bright colors, neutrals, and of course blacks are always sliming. Navy is the new black. It’s still dark and can be paired with practically in stone, metal, or color to create a fab look. A very important note, wear YOUR size not someone else’s. No matter what size you are you will appear MUCH smaller just by wearing clothes that actually fit you and not clothes that are too little or too big.

Meet the Artist

Yes I may meet the artists who create the clothes that make the magic to enhance my body. Which is exactly what I did at the 23rd annual Meet the Artist gala at the downtown library that was transformed into a beautiful museum displaying artwork hung strategically on the walls, throughout the library as standalone pieces and on display tables next to the artists that were located on all 6 floors. Truly impressed by the craftsmanship of the artwork for the show’s featured artist and curator, Anthony Radford, I however was anticipating the fashion show. Anxious to see the artistry in the beautiful garments I could only imagine to be shown. Once the musical artists were done entertaining the fashion show was about to begin. The show consisted of four different designers but only one that I knew would be showing. The first two were up and coming student designers from the Art Institute with tailoring skills that are undeniable. The other was established designer Berny Martin of Catou & Bridal designer Cc. Elaine which was the coordinator of the fashion show. I was truly amazed by the uniqueness and creativity that was displayed from the detachable cocktail dresses which crossed between architectural genius and party dresses which opened the show by student designer Damian Pearsall. I wanted to wear them, style them and look at them all at the same time. The sequence and glitter from the next student designer, Nataliya Kitic, really tickled my fancy because I need to have my bling. So combining that with rompers, jumpsuits and cocktail dresses I was in after 5 heaven. The Catou line had a mix of tailored suits with hot shades and dresses that can go from the board room to happy hour which really takes the idea of business meets fashion to another level. The color choices, tailoring and quality in fabric makes going on an interview or business lunch almost like walking the runway since you would look so fashionable doing it. Last but certainly not least was the grand finale which was certainly memorable with a full wedding dress construction right on the runway by bridal gown designer Cc Elaine and stylist on stage. The theme for the show was “something blue” and in my mind I think of the sky as the limit for creativity. Seeing the model which happened to be curvaceously fierce start out in full undergarments then dressed from tulle, to draping, to bustle, to veil and accessories was a sight to see. The entire experience captivated the audience by showing the hard work it takes to create that final bridal couture look that you would see on your special day. Including several plus models was just a bonus that reiterated loving your body and dressing the part will make anyone no matter the size or shape fierce and fabulous in high fashion. When Opposites Attract

Mixing and matching your prints is what I call when opposites attract, like this daring fashionista in the NY subway I had to stop. She has a classic black blazer which everyone should have in their wardrobe. A basic black and white horizontal striped skirt paired with an oversized cheetah print scarf. Black opaque tights and black booties makes this look easy and very chic. Simple jewelry makes this look wearable anywhere.

Electric In Blue

She has a funky style in an electric blue satin blazer with a pop of pink inside the cuff’s trim. The single breasted blazer is paired with a simple white tank and black skinny leg pants. Black round toe pumps and accessorized with a multiple layered pearl necklace, taupe and gray crock audile clutch and cream oval/rectangular shaped glasses gives her look a very classy, sophisticated yet futuristic flair.

Finding My Place!

Author: CLM Editorial Team

You deserve it! Finding your place! Being inspired and decluttering has been amazing, but enjoying the tranquility, peace and comfort of your own home is priceless! As Americans we are always on the GO…GO…GO! We rarely take time to get adequate rest. Hardly ever do we allow ourselves downtime to relax and rejuvenate our mind, body, and soul. We are going to help! We are going to help you find your place in your home! Those places where you are able to let your hair down, unwind, and debrief from all the things life hits you with. Sometimes, we think we can pick a place easily, but often times those places are hindered because of technology. We have cell phones, laptops, tablets, and much more that is so portable we often take those things into our relaxing space because we don’t want to miss something important. This behavior does not allow us the opportunity to really relax, often not able to relax because we allow those distractions that require energy. Some feel we have to step out of our house to get peace. This should NOT be and CAN be changed! What should be altered is who and what you allow to disturb you at home when you require that down time. This may mean after 6 o’clock in the evening cut off your phone or set your hours so people are aware of when you are available, turn off your laptop, desktop, or tablet. Learn not to make yourself available to others all the time, take time for yourself. Set time in the household for everyone to have downtime and relax. This will make the whole house feel a little better and teach those younger to require it for themselves as well. Put a system in place where you have time to find your center of peace in the home. Finding that center is the place with no distractions, nothing that can consume you and allows you to recoup from the day. It could be your bedroom, taking hour long baths and relaxing to music and candlelight, it could be your favorite chair in the living room cuddled up with a book. Make sure to find your place and allow yourself time daily and watch how much more productive you are! Photography: MermaidShoes Photography

The ABC’S of Investing Ladies, in the last issue we discussed the importance of lowering debt and creating income cushions. Now, we must decide how we will redistribute our extra income to create new revenue streams. The key is investing. There are several types of investments: 1) Short-term investments generally offer a less than five year return on investment and most often include stocks, bonds, or certificate of deposits (CD). The benefit of short-term investments is that each can easily be liquidated. 2) Long-term investments can include items such as commercial real estate or corporate investments (i.e., Company X invests in Company Y and gains a significant interest in the company without holding a majority of the voting shares). The major difference between the two is that short-term investments can be sold at anytime whereas long-term investments can be held indefinitely. In this article, we will focus on how to research and invest in stock. We frequently hear news anchors talk about Stock Market Investing, but what exactly is Stock Market Investing and is that the best option for you? Clearly, you are a novice. You know you want to invest in stock, but are not sure where to start. There are typically four ways to begin investing in the stock market. 1)

The easiest way to gain entry into the stock market is through your employer’s 401K or Retirement Plan.

2) A traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) allows investors to make tax-deductible contributions and the earnings will grow tax free under the account holder until age 59 ½. At that time the account holder may begin withdrawing funds for retirement. 3) Brokerage Firms. Look for reputable investment companies such as Merrill Lynch or Charles Schwab to offer professional advice that will help you build your portfolio. 4) Direct Stock Purchase. Individuals can purchase stock through a direct stock purchase plan in which an investor can set up an account and begin investing immediately. Usually there is a minimal initial investment fee required for new accounts. Once you choose your initial entry into the stock market here are some basic tips that can assist any beginning investor make wiser choices about Stock Market Investing. 1) Set a goal. Individuals should set goals when investing that directly impact the type of investment they will pursue. This will determine what investment is best and how much money to invest. 2) Be Assertive. Many beginners feel intimidated by what they do not know. Understand there are no set rules for investing. However, you should do your due diligence on any stock you find appealing in order to completely understand all of the details of your investment. 3) Understand your stock. Concentrate on the value of the stock rather than the price. Lower priced stocks may be low for a reason. Check to see if the stock has the potential to rise. Prices move up or down according to future projections. 4) Check current trends. Does the company you are planning to invest in have a return on its net worth? This figure is calculated by the profit after taxes divided by the net worth. 5)

Become a savvy risk taker. Do not place all of your funds into one high or low risk stock. Look over all of your options.

6)

Continue learning. You must stay abreast of any new changes that have the potential to affect your investment.

Finding the best short-term investment will require time and research. Only you can decide if the stock market is your best option. Take your time and continue to be driven by purpose, the perfect investment is in your future.

Health First Sleepless in the Sack?

Author: Saundra Adcock, LPN

early, feeling tired upon waking, falling asleep during the day, irritability, problem with concentrating or memory, or waking up during the night with trouble getting back to sleep. There are two types of insomnia, primary and secondary. Primary insomnia is sleep problems not associated with a health condition or problem. Secondary insomnia is having sleep problems because of something else, such as health conditions like asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, heartburn, or pain. Medication which is being taken or a substance like alcohol can also be a cause. Often insomnia is the symptom that causes people with depression to seek medical help.

Self First

Insomnia is the difficulty of getting to sleep or staying asleep. Some of the symptoms are: waking up too

Acute (short-term) insomnia can last one night to a few weeks. Some of the causes for acute insomnia are: stress (job loss or change, death of a loved one, divorce, moving), illness, and emotional or physical discomfort. Some environmental factors such as noise, light, extreme temperatures (hot or cold) and some medications to treat colds, allergies, depression, high blood pressure and asthma are also causes of insomnia. Another type of interference of sleep could be jet lag or changing work shift. Chronic insomnia lasts a long time meaning three nights a week for a month or longer. Some of the causes are depression or anxiety, stress, pain or discomfort at night. Diagnosing insomnia requires a physical examination, medical history, and a sleep history. You may be asked to keep a sleep diary for one to two weeks to track your sleep habits, and also how you feel during the day. Acute insomnia often can be prevented or cured by practicing good sleep habits. Possibly the health care provider may prescribe sleeping pills for a limited time. Treatment for chronic insomnia must first treat underlying conditions or health problems. Nine good sleep habits for beating insomnia are: 1. Try to go to sleep at the same time each night and try not to take naps. 2. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. 3. Regularly exercise during the day, but at least 2-4 hours before bed. 4. Eat at regular times during the day and don’t eat a heavy meal near bedtime. 5. Bedroom temperature should be comfortable, dark, quiet, or with white noise. 6. Develop a routine of reading a book, listening to music, or taking a bath. 7. Avoid using the bed for anything other than sleep or sex. 8. If you can’t fall asleep, get up read or do something not overly stimulating until sleepy. 9. If you find yourself worrying about things make a to-do list before going to bed. This may help you to not focus on those worries overnight. The prognosis should be good. You should be able to sleep if you practice good sleep habits. See a doctor if you have chronic insomnia which does not improve. Sleep requirements change with age. Listen to your body’s sleep signals and don’t try to sleep more or less than is refreshing for you. Daytime sleepiness is a common complication. Sleep deprivation is a common cause of accidents. If driving and you feel sleepy, take a break. Remember you must care for yourself first.

Evaluate, Renovate or Eliminate

As women we hold many titles, mother, daughter, sister, caregiver, wife, independent, strong, and many others. We often give to others before we give to ourselves, compromising with circumstances, values, emotions, and sometimes healing. Neglecting to cater to ourselves and take time to evaluate options and make better choices is often what happens; we sacrifice ourselves to please those who we feel are deserving and more than not those who don’t so deserve. Today, I encourage you to take a moment and evaluate all your relationships. Take a look at your circle, your friends, family, and romantic ones. Ask yourself what do I give to this relationship? How often am I negatively consumed or drained? Then ask yourself, how do I benefit from this relationship? What do I get from this that is encouraging, positive, and fulfilling? How often am I uplifted or inspired by this connection? Does this relationship help or hinder me with where I want to go and be? Is this a seasonal or lifetime connection? Is this a business or personal connection or both and is this healthy for the direction I am seeking? After you pose these questions to yourself and carefully answer them, for some, questions will take longer thought than others. However, as you start to collect your thoughts and answers write them down. Then write down the things you desire to gain out of every relationship you form and where you personally desire to be in your stages of life. Whether you desire things like stability, respect, security, confidence, trust, loyalty, encouragement, mentorship, or inspiration, it is okay to express it. Allow yourself to stand up and speak up for your needs and what you desire out of life. We do not have mind readers in our society, so it is best to communicate and be forthcoming with what you expect and require in relationships. It is ok to ask for what you want, but being wise in your word choice is necessary to be effective. It’s ok to behave, as you see fit for you and your lifestyle, but choose your actions carefully and be aware of results that may come from such. It is absolutely ok, to require respect, loyalty and consideration from your connections, but be sure to return those requirements. Allow happiness in your life, you deserve it, no matter your background or circumstance. Be content with removing things that hinder a successful path for you. It is not easy, but in the end it is sure worth it!

Shining in the Spotlight

Model, Mother and Motivated! Shaunna Marie

Author: CLM Editorial Team

My story starts by growing up with divorced parents which to me isn’t a bad thing now, but at the age of 6 and 7, I couldn’t comprehend this dramatic change. I lived with my mother the majority of those years until I was a teen, and started, not to rebel, but didn’t understand her ways of life. She wouldn’t explain to me in full, for I was only a teen, so I left to live with my father. Living with my father was a whole different ball game for even though I got to live in the nice house and ride in expensive cars there were rules and regulations that were foreign to me and then only did I start to realize and appreciate things a little more. During the time I lived with my father I eventually started to feel alone for it seemed the church trumped any and everything I wanted to do. Also, it wasn’t that I didn’t have anyone, but simply because no one could relate, or so I thought, to what I was going through mentally. I hid it well by burying myself into academics, sports, and of course my writing. At this point I was spending more time with my mother because my dance studio was closer and she realized I wasn’t a little girl anymore, and that I could handle a lot more than she thought I could so I moved back to her home. Shortly after this I realized I was pregnant with my beautiful daughter Sacred Jewelle Norris, whom of which to me is one of my greatest accomplishments and life savers, I thank God for her each and every day. It was a struggle to still be in high school pregnant I must admit, dealing with an image of being a “promiscuous” teen, which I was not, and the negative comments “oh you know you’re going to be fat now, right?”, “you’re not going to be able to focus you might as just drop out and get your GED”, “your life is over now you won’t be able to do anything with a baby”. But, one of the sweetest women I’ve met and another mentor of mine Ms. Sherma Jackson and her program Future Promises, which has helped so many young girls/teen moms in my same predicament get past those negative sayings and encourage and build up instead of making us feel worse about our different situations, helped me tremendously. As a person, I REFUSE to be a statistic. I’m incredibly intelligent, talented and the world will know about it. So from this quote and self realization, I started my mental rehabilitation from never hearing I was beautiful I was always “just alright”, to guys never actually liking me, to the feeling of being ignored, and feeling like everything I did was wrong and perfection still wasn’t good enough. So no, I didn’t get beaten, I wasn’t molested, I never went hungry, but to feel acknowledged not only at home, but at school as well or for my silent cry to be heard back then, would’ve meant the world to me. I’ve long since overcome this mental battle finding out people are actually in my corner and I am appreciated for the things I do, but it was and has been a process and has made me grow to know and appreciate even the smallest of things in people and to never discourage them no matter how outlandish their dreams and aspirations may seem. I’ve been picked over, called ugly, fat, which is a joke to most people when they hear it and see me, but then there’s the positive when I finally got to do things I thought were “big time” and find out it’s just another stepping stone and not a pinnacle. I love and appreciate all of the good and bad experiences where I hear the “wow Shaunna’s” to build me up, so when I hear the “Shaunna who’s?” it just falls right off me. Rejection just simply means redirection. Photography: Andrea Smith, Studio 57 Photography. Styling: DaNisha Greene, Yours In Fashion. MUA: M.Renee, Fiercelooks. Hair:stylist: Joi McCreary, HairJoi

It’s funny because I would have NEVER in a million years thought, me, Shaunna, would be even almost pretty enough to model. However, I didn’t choose modeling, modeling chose me. I was last minute Christmas shopping at Wal-mart in the worst looking clothes, beat up sneakers and my hair was back in a pony tail typical me, and this lady walks up to me and says, “girl you know you need to be somewhere modeling”. She gave me her number and it turned out her dad was a photographer! The very same day I went to Big Lots, to find a Barbie (lol), and a very well known agent in Indianapolis saw me and said “you have the most beautiful hair and skin give me a call, you’d do well modeling”. Again, I looked at her puzzled and she gave me her card. The very next day while in church service, a visiting Pastor walked up to me and said I see you on a runway in Paris, have you ever thought about modeling. At this point I accepted the challenge. I’m not superstitious, but when things are meant for you they’re there; not saying they’re easily attainable, but it won’t be as hard for you as it is for others. Like I previously mentioned, I refuse to be a statistic or typical teen mom living a mediocre life and having to come up with excuse after excuse to my child as to why she can’t go here and why she can’t have that. I’m not going to spoil her and not let her know the value of hard work, but I will grant her one of the biggest gifts, in my eyes, you can give to a child; a sense of versatility and introduction to the world so they’re not naive or afraid of different cultures, and to overall enjoy life. We weren’t put here to stress and struggle, so along with my daughter to help motivate me to move forward, the will to be able to help, and not be helped, to give and sow into others that were once in my position hope that things can work out for you, and life won’t stop because of a few bumps in the road, I keep pressing. There are quite a few mentors in my life. There are a few that stick out amongst the crowd that aren’t blood related. There’s Esther Harrington. I don’t even think she knows how much of an impact she made on my life. She pushed me to aim higher than I thought I could go, as well as opened doors to places I wouldn’t otherwise have gone and she did it all with poise, class, and a down to earth attitude; she’s like a model of what I’ll be like when I’m not much older. Then, of course, the big one my parents each one has played a big role in my life and have both overcome so much and endured more than I could ever imagine attempting to bear. Writing is one of my favorite pass times. Poetry, plays, you name it, I probably have it somewhere among my collection. Dance, although I’m somewhat out of the loop on it now, I’ve danced for a very long time. Ballet, hip-hop, jazz are all different types of beautiful expressions shown by the body, hence why modeling has come somewhat natural to me. My favorite quote, I hate to choose because I have two I live by, one is “Blessed is all I can be I can’t help that God loves me” written by myself and another by Mark Twain “Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option”. My short term goals right now are moving, which I will be doing at the beginning of June, and signing with another agency. As for my long term goals, there are so many, but mostly finishing school and getting my PhD. I decided to put it on hold since school is always going to be there. My life hasn’t been the worst or the greatest but it has been a blessing. I am now a confident, intelligent upcoming model. That is me Shaunna Marie!
