‘TUNNEL VISION’ Ryton-on-Dunsmore Subway Decoration Project Introduction This is a community project to decorate the subway in Ryton under the A45. The subway is a vital link for the two halves of the Village split by a dual carriageway.

Background Ryton is a medium sized Warwickshire village near Coventry, Rugby and Leamington. There are around 750 houses,a church, pubs, junior school and shops. The subway is 25m long by 2m high with approach ramps and steps at each end. It currently has plain paintwork in a poor state of repair and the members of the Youth Club, together with a significant group of adults are keen to brighten it up. We have received funding for the project from ‘Arts on our Doorstep’.

What we are looking for: Have you painted an outdoor mural? Do you have experience of working with young people? Have you been involved in a community project?

Having been involved in creating a mural in the subway 25 yrs ago, we appreciate the scale of the project. We therefore feel very strongly that we need the support and guidance of a professional artist with experience in such a venture. We require professional advice and support with both the practical aspects of the project, such as preparing the surface, as well as with the design itself. The response from the whole village has been very encouraging with suggestions for themes etc falling into the following 4 categories: village, wildlife, wonderland, sport .

How Our plan would beto explorethesedesignideasfurther with the successful candidate, perhapsthrough a village workshop, for example. The artist would then submit three possible designs from which the members of Youth Club makethe final choice. In view of the limited time available, it has been suggested an outline design which could then be filled in by particicpants might be an approach worth considering. Schedule
