COVENANT CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL

2020-2021

ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends, The more challenging the situation, the more uncharacteristic our outward response tends to become. Our disappointments may blurt out complaints and feel abundant justification in doing so. Our positions may declare an imperfect, divisive narrative exacerbated by isolation. Our muted hearts may barely muster a single, “Why?” But the more challenging the situation, the simpler and more sincere our prayers tend to become, too. It is hard to bring self-serving silliness into the presence of “Him who endured.” Sadness is crowded out by celebrations. Being right is turned into doing rightly. Our hearts are lightened by the possibilities of “how,” rather than being weighed down by declarations of “can’t.” As we celebrate this most unique school year together, I invite you to lay down its burdens, embrace its joys, and pray together in all humility, sincerity, and unity: “God, you are God, and we are not. You, by your grace, have built this place and continue to sustain it. For your purpose you continue to protect it and make it flourish. You have given us the gift of being a part of it during this time. You have granted us a miraculous ‘how’ in the menacing wake of ‘can’t.’ Thank you.” For the Kingdom,

Andy Goodwin, Ed.D. Principal and CEO

FACULTY & STAFF Kathleen Gainey was this year’s recipient of the Teacher Heart of Covenant Award. She is determined and passionate, always seeking new ways of growing and celebrating the growth in other teachers. Students feel valued and supported by her and because of this, they are motivated and productive. Mrs. Gainey is not only intelligent and creative, but also wise. Students not only gain a high level of skills and knowledge from her, but they are mentored into becoming better people. She desires that all students would see how God and our world are connected in a profound way.

Mrs. Gainey is the 2021 recipient of the Teacher Heart of Covenant Award.

humility, sincerity, & unity

Mrs. Gainey has a personal love for learning and an enthusiasm for student discovery. She builds confidence in students, helping them to become authentic learners. She is an advocate for all students and has the rare ability to motivate and resource students at every level. Mrs. Gainey is the kind of educator that elevates the craft of teaching through the example of an exciting and efficient classroom. Her influence reaches far beyond the classroom. She is a mentor. She cares deeply about Covenant’s success and its mission. She trains others. She encourages others. She is a teacher’s teacher. It is not an exaggeration to say that her leadership is felt in other classrooms in the building in some way on a daily basis. She is an inspiration to all her peers, whether it be in using technology or understanding how the student’s brain works. Congratulations on this tremendous honor, Mrs. Gainey!

We were here. On campus. Together. That in and of itself was pure joy. We prayed for a spirit of gratefulness to permeate this year—and even with its challenges, we felt that spirit from the first day celebration of being back together in person to graduation at the end of the year.

TOTAL STUDENTS

Students and faculty alike embraced the joy of things that may have been taken for granted previously. Things like lab experiments, music concerts, group projects, meeting with a teacher during SRT, speeches in class, having J-Term (May Term), and much more. Thank you, Covenant students, faculty, staff, and administration, for a job well done.

ATHLETICS

by his grace

Student athletes at Covenant are not just students who are athletes. They are sons and daughters, siblings, volunteers and part-time employees all over Indianapolis, designers and artists, math and science scholars, singers and musicians, and especially encouragers and leaders. Whether we heard team captains reminding their underclassmen to “mask up” after coming off the field, witnessed them go from a game to change into their performance attire for a concert, or leave straight from practice for work only to head home to finish homework, they persevered through an uncommon year by God’s grace. athletics4cchs

What a joy it is to hear from our alumni. To see the impact they are making. To meet their families. To hear how they are living for God’s purpose in their lives. Although we’ve missed their in-person visits during this COVID season, we love receiving updates. We highlight one of our alumni every other Wednesday on our social media with #WarriorWednesday. If you’re an alum, we’d love to hear from you. Go to covenantchristian.org/alumni and share your update. Join your class Facebook group (i.e. Covenant Christian High School Class of ----). It’s a great way to stay in touch about upcoming reunions or events with your classmates and Covenant.

#WARRIORWEDNESDAY

We hosted our first outdoor Fall Concert in October.

ARTS

the possibilities of how

Indoor gatherings are limited. How can we present a Fall Concert so that our students can perform together for the first time in ten months? Square footage must remain free for distancing students in order to remain in person. How can we produce a play and a musical in our Commons? Schools are shut down from Thanksgiving through the new year. How can we have a Christmas Concert?

Josiah Allman (‘21) performs at the Spring Senior Showcase.

The answer? Ask. That’s what our Fine Arts Department did all year. They asked how. And our administration, facilities team, faculty, students, and parents answered with creativity and graciousness. @covenantfinearts

Due to COVID restrictions, we pre-recorded our Christmas Concert.

Th Cov ena nt Art students Christine Mmassa (‘23) and Ellie Burns (‘23) work on a project for 3-D Art class with Mr. Sparks.

COMMUNITY

doing

rightly

Parent Suni Johnson provided the banners and balloons to welcome our community back on our first day of school.

Doing requires people. At Covenant over the past 25 years, that has been overwhelmingly accomplished through our amazing volunteers— so doing this year looked a bit different. This page is usually dedicated to the hours and hours served by those volunteers over the year and we look forward to bringing them back into our building for the 2021-22 school year. So who did the doing? How do things carry on while we strive to act with integrity as a school and follow the mandates and guidelines during this year of COVID? As Dr. Goodwin says, we “do rightly.” Our administration, staff, faculty, and students all stepped up to the plate to accomplish: • making the simulcast option possible for students in quarantine • ticketing and concessions for every home athletic event • maximum use of space in our building • lunch and space to eat lunch for our students everyday • virtual events such as DECA and We The People • Fine Arts events, both in-person and virtual • contact tracing and keeping our community safe and healthy • meaningful distance learning during the mandated shutdown in November and December • community events like Spirit Week, Powder Puff, and converting J-Term to May Term to celebrate the end of the year

Assembly was streamed to each classroom: Jay Wright (‘21)

And let’s not forget our parents. They volunteered outside the building whenever they could. They supported the limited capacity at all our events. They kept supporting their students. They encouraged our administration, staff, and faculty. Facilities Team member Luan Voehringer always makes sure our kitchen is clean and ready for each day.

2021 ADVANCEMENT NUMBERS

We say it often. Covenant has been given so many wonderful gifts in the alumni parents, alumni, community members, and friends who continue to support our mission and vision. However, what we hear from those who give so much of themselves is how much they appreciate being a part of what God is doing here.
