COVENANT CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL

ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Covenant Family, When people ask me how things are going at Covenant, I simply respond, “God is working through an amazing team of people to do some amazing things.” Perhaps that is because we boldly, faithfully, joyfully, and intentionally engage the world for the sake of the Kingdom. I am profoundly grateful to serve alongside men and women who love the Lord, the Word, their families, and their subject matter - in that order! If that progression were to ever be skewed, we could not rightly provide the excellent, Christ-centered education for a life of scholarship, leadership, and service promised in our mission. While we certainly delight in the brief moments of joy that accomplishments may offer, it is our identity in Christ that defines us. Yet, pursuing excellence is a good and right response to the gifts of life and talent that we have received. It is how we participate in enlightening minds, inflaming hearts, and transforming lives. As you read these snapshots of what God is doing through Covenant, I hope you will be inspired to be a part of our community. For the Kingdom,

Andy Goodwin

FACULTY & STAFF Tyler Wildman, English 12 Teacher & Department Head, was awarded the Lilly Teacher Creativity Grant this year. The grant is funded by the Lilly Endowment, and only 100 of these $12,000 grants are awarded each year. Mr. Wildman’s grant focuses around dictionaries and reference guides, and he will meet with authors and lexicographers around the US in Texas and Massachusetts, as well as spend some time in Oxford, UK, studying the OED at Oxford University. Mr. Wildman is the fifth Covenant teacher to receive this award.

engage the world An emerging worldview within a deepening faith helps cultivate a love for Christ and a desire to engage the world. Therefore, education must be more than what happens in the classroom. That is why a Covenant education engages its students with internship opportunities, state and national clubs, and domestic and international trips that challenge and cultivate their worldview. That is why we welcome international students to our campus. This year our students had the opportunity to visit England, Spain, Nicaragua, Israel, and Haiti. And we engaged with students on our campus from Kenya, China, South Korea, and Vietnam, as well as short-term students from Guatemala and Spain.

y l l a n o i t n e t in A Loving Community is one that joyfully pursues Christ in faith, hope, love, freedom, grace, and truth. Each Friday morning, our Covenant community pauses to gather for Morning Assembly. This is a time when we intentionally engage in God’s Word as a family - hearing from senior students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Spiritual Emphasis Day occurs every other year when we set aside an entire day to focus on God’s Word and growing in truth. This year we hosted author James K. A. Smith, with messages that centered around The Calling of the Christian School: Prophetic, Public, Missional. Students were challenged to think about the purpose of our Christian school: “Christian schools are outposts that show the world something they forgot, but increasingly have an inkling that they know they are missing it. Christian schools are to become a front porch of the body of Christ.” -James K. A. Smith

boldly Webster defines Warrior as “a person engaged in some struggle or conflict”. The Kneeling Warrior is not just a mascot. It is a symbol to our opponents and a reminder to our athletes that no matter how many wins we achieve through the struggle of competition, humility is to be at the heart of each one. Have we perfected that? No, but there are opportunities with every competition that allow our athletes to grow - even in the midst of heartbreaking loss. Boys Soccer experienced an incredible season leading all the way to the State Finals, but it ended with a 2-1 loss to Fort Wayne Canterbury. Coach David Pfeifer and his team received their runner-up medals, then stayed on the field to witness the winners receive their medals and pray with the their team. A bold statement? We think so. IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Paul Neidig took notice and tweeted:

faithfully For our Fine Arts students, faithfully putting in hours at the studio or in rehearsals is where they discover the power of worshipping the Creator of the Arts with their time, talents, and dedication. This is where they learn to delight in someone else’s gifts. This is where they learn that what happens off the stage can be celebrated and encouraged just as much as what is presented on the stage, desiring to point others to Christ. “The purpose of the story or music or painting is to further the coming of the Kingdom; to make us aware of our status as children of God; and to turn our feet toward home.” - Madeline L’Engle

DONORS Covenant is about Kingdom work, and we’re grateful for those who contributed to that work this year. The dollars raised by our generous donors make more Covenant stories possible so that students are equipped for a life of scholarship, leadership, and service outside of this place.

2018*

WHY GIVE TO COVENANT? “A Covenant education is without a doubt one of the best in the city and probably state. However, there’s more to a Covenant education than academics. One of the pillars that strengthens the school and supports the academics is the rich community that Covenant offers its students and families. The relationships between students, families, faculty and staff can be, and often are, life-long. We’ve witnessed the positive impact the faculty and staff at Covenant have had on our sons, as well as their classmates. Helping a deserving high school student reap these same benefits is an honor.”

“We give to Covenant to help a deserving student to be able to attend. We didn’t realize how many students receive aid so that they can go to Covenant. If we would have known it was available, our children might have gone there. The education as well as spiritual influence is superior and it is evident in a large majority of people that have graduated from Covenant.” Tom & Vicki Featheringill Friends of Covenant
