English – Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening If you can speak English but need help improving your everyday reading and writing, these courses are for you: they will help you to improve your English skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Functional Skills English Classes: Our English Workshops are for learners at all levels, from beginner to Level 2. Your skills will be expertly assessed and the areas you need to work on identified. Your tutor will help you to set your learning aims, and provide you with the work you need to help you learn. You will also have the opportunity to work towards a qualification; we currently offer two main types:

Ascentis QCF English Awards: These Entry 1 to Level 2 Certificates in English are perfect for developing the underpinning skills and knowledge required for you to progress onto Functional Skills or GCSEs, as well as allowing you to develop confidence and ability in your Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening.

City & Guilds Functional Skills: Fundamental applied skills in English with a particular focus on problem-solving and being able to apply these skills effectively in real-life situations. These qualifications are intended for anyone wishing to develop their English, as well as being used to support learners’ progress towards GCSE, and the skills learned will help you in the workplace too.

Dyslexia: Discrete Dyslexia classes are also available for you if you have been assessed with Dyslexia, but you will need to have a Dyslexia report already to access these courses.

GCSE English: Please see page 12 Braille and Visually Impaired: If you would like to learn Braille, or improve your Braille skills, we have a 30 week course with a dedicated specialist tutor where you can be part of a lively and hard-working group. These classes are primarily for learners with visual impairment, and priority will be given, but places may be available for other interested learners, availability allowing.

Joining an English Class: To join an English class you need to come to an assessment session. At the assessment session we will answer any questions you have about the course, assess your starting English skills to make sure you are getting the right help and find a course at a time and place that suits you. Your assessment may take up to 2 hours and you need to bring some ID with you (passport, driving license if born in UK or EU/EEA, birth certificate or residence permit). see page 4

Workshops are available at centres across the city, day and evening, so there should always be one convenient to you; many of our classes have childcare available. We offer specialist English classes for learners with visual impairment, with access to all the latest assistive technology.

Please see page 12 for details of assessments.

Maths Our courses help you improve your maths and lead to a nationally recognised qualification. We can help anyone from a complete beginner right up to those studying for a maths GCSE. We offer two types of class:

Functional Skills Maths Classes: These classes focus on the kind of maths adults need in their everyday lives – whether for work or for helping children with their homework. The classes include how to work out sums, using fractions, decimals and percentages, understanding the metric system and interpreting graphs and charts. There are 5 different levels of qualification you can work towards depending on how strong your maths is when you start. The highest level counts as equivalent to a grade C GCSE.

Dance A new year, a new chance to step in to dance with courses in Ballroom & Latin or Salsa that will have you daring to dance in no time! Or if you enjoy dancing solo try a course in Line Dancing at beginner to improver levels that will enable you to learn a range of rhythmical routines and improve co-ordination. If your goal is to keep fit through dance, Zumba offers a diversity of dance styles that you can perform at your own pace to easy-to-follow, fun filled routines and styles that include Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue and Reggaeton. Additionally, Zumba Gold is aimed at participants who are just starting their journey to a fit and healthier lifestyle, or for those who want to dance the familiar Latin Zumba moves but at a lower impact and pace. It’s a great way to improve fitness through dance and you don’t even need a partner!

If learning set routines as part of a dance troupe appeals to you then perhaps you’ll be tempted to Tap Dance or be leaping to learn routines inspired by popular music and movements from the musicals with Dance to Musicals. Or our Ballet Improvers course will enable you to develop fluidity of movement, gracefully moving to demonstrate a variety of strengthening exercises that will improve your overall fitness and posture, while developing the correct technique for ballet steps and routines. Whichever style you choose, dance can help to improve your coordination, confidence, and physical and mental health and is a great way to learn and develop new skills whether dancing solo or with a partner. Places on all courses are available to learners aged 19 and upwards so enrol today and make a positive start to a new year through dance!

ADVICE & GUIDANCE Please read the course information available online and note that regular attendance is important. For courses that require you to dance with a partner, we recommend that you enrol with a partner for the best possible learning experience. If you require further guidance please phone Anne-Louise Blower on 024 7650 7822 from Monday 4 January.

Music Melodic birdsong, the greening of the grass, and trees with leaves unfolding warmed by fresh sunlight; all herald the beginning of Spring. Normally associated with regrowth and renewal, Spring is an ideal time to renew and nurture your growing musical interest. Dig out your talent and plant new seeds of growth. We have a fantastic programme of music courses to help get you started, or enable you to extend your existing skills. Learn with our skilled and experienced tutors and get the support you need to make progress. Put aside some time for practice and with the benefit of learning with a group of other interested people you will soon be able to develop your musical talent. All our classes are practical and recognise the individual needs of learners. Like music? Then immerse yourself in one of our courses! Learn your favourite song, play/sing along with your music collection, or entertain others. All of this is possible with the range of courses we offer.
