Director of Education

Summer is coming, so why not join one of our courses to gain a new skill and to set yourself up for the long days ahead? Join a course and gain a qualification if you are looking to return to work, gain a job for the first time, or to support you if you are already in work. You can try a new language for fun or for a holiday; a fitness or dance course to enhance your well-being or why not get outdoors and try some photography? You can also join in and learn as a family with our range of Summer Fun Family Learning courses or we also offer courses to help you help your children with Maths and English at School. You can then use your new skills in your work, with your families or they can make a real difference to the communities you live in.

Enrolments for Community Learning classes start on Wednesday 13th April 2016

The Adult Education Service runs crèches for pre-school children aged 6 weeks to 5 years old in many venues across the city to support learners attending ESOL, Maths, English and Family Learning classes.

Welcome to your summer term edition of Choice - we look forward to meeting you on a course soon.

Our crèches work to Ofsted Standards and provide high quality childcare.

Maths Our courses help you improve your maths and lead to a nationally recognised qualification. We can help anyone from a complete beginner right up to those studying for a maths GCSE. We offer two types of class:

Functional Skills Maths Classes: These classes focus on the kind of maths adults need in their everyday lives – whether for work or for helping children with their homework. The classes include how to work out sums, using fractions, decimals and percentages, understanding the metric system and interpreting graphs and charts. There are 5 different levels of qualification you can work towards depending on how strong your maths is when you start. The highest level counts as equivalent to a grade C GCSE.

The city is embracing smartphone technology to help remove barriers for the 57,000 disabled residents as well as visitors. Users can get the bespoke assistance they may need, with the ability to also connect via two way messaging with their desired destination. The unique app gives the service provider a profile of the customer so they understand what their needs are likely to be and anticipate the service users’ arrival as well as being able to monitor in real time to see when they are approaching. The assist-Mi pilot is up and running; with a wide ranging set of service providers already on-board including Coventry Citizens Advice, Coventry City Council, Coventry University, Culture Coventry (2 locations) The Belgrade Theatre, Sports and Leisure Centre just to name just a few. The app is also listing Adult Education sites across the city with plans to have 22 venues offering assistance through the assist-Mi app in the coming months. Councillor Faye Abbott, Cabinet Member for community development, co-operative and social enterprise said: “I’m delighted the Council is working in partnership with local organisations to deliver this App. The Council is committed to facilitating visitors to the city get a positive experience and this app is one of the practical ways we can put that commitment into action.” Gary McFarlane, Co-Founder and CEO of assist-Mi and also a member of the Power List 100 most influential disabled people said: “assist-Mi is delighted to be working with Coventry City Council, the Citizens Advice Bureau and city businesses and app users, bringing a new way of offering enhanced access to service providers for their disabled customers. We look forward to potential users of the app downloading assist-Mi and getting involved in the pilot.”

On downloading the app, one user said “It gave me the choice of planning my journey to make my trip into the city smoother and easier and of course it is great that it is free for individuals.” The app is free of charge for users and is extremely accessible to a broad range of disabilities.

If your goal is to keep fit through dance, Zumba offers a diversity of dance styles that you can perform at your own pace to easy-to-follow, fun filled routines and styles that include Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue and Reggaeton. Additionally, Zumba Gold is aimed at participants who want to dance the familiar Latin Zumba moves but at a lower impact and pace. It’s a great way to improve fitness through dance and you don’t even need a partner!

COURSE LEVELS

Whichever style you choose, and with opportunities to perform at the annual dance celebration in July, dance can help to improve your coordination, confidence, and physical and mental health and is a great way to learn, develop and consolidate new skills whether dancing solo or with a partner. Places on all courses are available to learners aged 19 and upwards so enrol today.

ADVICE & GUIDANCE

This table will help you to decide which level of course is best for you. Creative Writing

For beginners with no or little experience and with an English entry 3 qualification.

Creative Writing -advanced

For people who have a GCSE a-c grade and have completed two years in a Creative Writing course with Adult Education or other establishment

Please read the course information available online and note that regular attendance is important. For courses that require you to dance with a partner, we recommend that you enrol with a partner for the best possible learning experience. If you require further guidance please phone Anne-Louise Blower on 024 7650 7822 from Monday 11 April 2016.

COURSE LEVELS

It is important that you read the course information available online before enrolling on to a course. If you require further guidance please contact Christine Bloomfield on 024 7678 6806 or at christine.bloomfield@coventry.gov.uk from Monday 11 April 2016.

SKILLS LEVELS

If learning set routines as part of a dance troupe appeals to you then perhaps you’ll be tempted to Tap Dance or be leaping to learn routines inspired by popular music and movements from the musicals with Dance to Musicals. Or our Ballet course will enable you to develop fluidity of movement, gracefully moving to demonstrate a variety of strengthening exercises that will improve your overall fitness and posture, while developing the correct technique for ballet steps and routines.

This table will help you to decide which level of course is best for you.

NEED HELP?

This is an Adult Community Learning Course with a focus on the teaching and learning of new skills. Learners must be able to demonstrate, independently, the skills required and an ability and willingness to achieve the learning outcomes and aims of the course. For details of how to enrol on these courses please see page 5.

Beginners

For absolute beginners with no previous knowledge.

Beginners Plus

For people who have completed beginner’s courses or who have experience of the basics and are ready to consolidate and build upon existing skills

Improvers

For people who have completed a beginners plus course or who are competent with the basic steps and are ready to build upon existing skills while learning more complex steps and longer, faster sequences

Term 2

Indicates a follow on course from the previous term. While some new learning will take place, new learners joining summer term will need to be aware that prior learning has already taken place, including work on a routine/s that have been taught but will be recapped, developed and practised in the current term for an informal performance at the annual dance celebration evening held in Coventry on Friday July 8th (participation on the night is optional).

For details of how to enrol on these courses please see page 5.
