›› Dispel myths, break down barriers, give examples of ways to get babies and children physically active and have FUN
Why focus on physical activity in early years? During the period from birth to five years, physical activity is critical to optimal growth and development. During this time babies and young children undergo rapid and wide-ranging physical and psychological developments which lay the foundation for their future health and well-being. These early years are an important time in the establishment of physical activity patterns, by encouraging a high level of activity at the earliest age you provide the best start in developing activity patterns and habits later in childhood. These behaviours will be crucial in reducing sedentary time and benefiting long term good health. The advantages of young children being physically active go way beyond just the physical benefits. At no other point will children learn so many physical skills as they do in the first five years of life! Research has shown that being physically active can help with the development of:
›› Motor skills, Strong bones, Muscles and Heart, maintaining a healthy weight & Development of social skills It is also widely believed that physical activity can help with the development of:
›› Self-confidence, Communication skills, Development of important brain structures, Establishing good habits for being active, & developing immediate and long-term good health outcomes.
Please note: You will incur a cancellation fee if you fail to attend or we do not receive prior notification of cancellation. Please see cancellation times/fees for further information, stated at the beginning of this directory.

›› Practitioners in PVI playgroups, pre-schools and nurseries
›› Practitioners in maintained school nursery and reception classes
›› Child-minders working with children in receipt of the 2 year old and 3 year old funding
Course objectives: ›› To look at why it is so important to use music in our work with young children.
›› To explore how we feel about singing in front of other people and what we can do to help each other.
›› Our musical repertoire. We are going to explore some songs and rhymes and maybe teach each other a few new ones.
Course outline: “Music is a basic human need – people have used it to lift their spirits and communicate their feelings for millennia. Societies have used it to bring communities together & pass on their culture. Singing develops language & attention skills; moving to music develops physical coordination; singing and dancing together helps with socialisation.” Sue Palmer Child Education, 2007. Practitioners often feel embarrassed about having to sing with the children because they think their voices are not ‘good enough’. We will explore this issue and ways to make sure our music times are confident, inclusive and fun. Practitioners will be expected to reflect upon their own experiences of music and those on offer in their settings.
