John Colet School Building Confi dence for High School
Building confidence for HIGH SCHOOL
Years 3 – 6 is a special and developmentally important time when students really blossom at John Colet School. Children take greater risks with their learning, build resilience, and are challenged in diverse areas. Within a supportive environment, students gain confidence in their own strengths and develop their ability to work with others, for the benefit of all.

Parents who move their children during the primary years to John Colet often express a confi dence in the transition process and ease in which their child settles into their new environment.
As a small school of only two classes per year level, everybody knows each other, facilitating a family atmosphere, where students feel connected. The close-knit JCS community gives them better access to teachers and staff who really know their children on an individual level. Of special note is that children stay with the same class for several years, meaning children form deeper bonds, through consistency and routine.
Senior students have leadership opportunities across all facets of the school and an understanding of how to contribute and grow in the world – important life skills to embrace the challenges of high school, and later life.
John Colet School offers all students an enriched curriculum including Shakespeare festivals, sport, philosophy, classical languages, drama and specialised art and music classes like ceramics and choir.
Headmaster Julian Wilcock says students at John Colet School are all challenged in a supportive and caring environment, towards their personal best. The benefi t of staying with the same teacher fosters an appreciation of each child’s individual social and academic progress. Our focus is on the development of character and values, towards greater confi dence and a love of learning. This can only come with excellent teachers who truly connect with the child.
And perhaps one of the biggest contributing factors to the children’s readiness for high school is their mindfulness program, the practice of The Pause – intentional pauses throughout their day to stop, refl ect, give attention and make sure they are present. The result? A more grounded, more connected, and more attentive approach to their learning and life.
Mr Wilcock says the best feedback the school consistently receives from graduating parents is that their children are confi dent, independent, aware of their strengths and areas for development, and that they’re socially and academically ready for high school.
“While we were always happy with her schooling at John Colet, it is now that we can fully appreciate just how well she has been prepared for high school,” said a parent of a recent graduate. •
