SHERMAN WITH WORDS THAT LINGER, OLY SHERMAN DELIVERS A SONG THAT SHOWCASES THE SYDNEY ARTIST AT HIS SOULFUL BEST, ‘THE WORLD IS IN A BAD ROOM’. THE NEW SINGLE FROM SHERMAN IS STRIKING IN ITS UNDERSTATED FORM, WITH FOCUS CENTRED ON THE SONGWRITER’S LYRICISM AND VOCAL DELIVERY. Oly Sherman’s new single is the latest in a string of impactful releases, proving that 2020 hasn’t stopped him from producing some of his most engaging material to date. ‘The World Is In A Bad Room’ stirs from the onset; Sherman’s rich vocals are heavy with depth and soulful edge. Akin to ‘Resolution’-era Matt Corby, the single is a rumination on the current state of the world and Sherman’s navigation through not only this warped climate we’re living in, but his own personal struggles. “A mixed mindset between the torn up world we’re trying to get through, and my own mind. The song basically encapsulates our decisions when weighed up with friends, relationships and social media,” says Oly Sherman. And while themes of confusion, unrest and indecision may have found their way into the song’s lyrics, they’ve proved to be a more definitive process. Recorded

at Sherman’s home studio and at Kiln Studios in St Peters, ‘The World Is In A Bad Room’ saw Sherman work with frequent collaborator Daniel Natoli once more on mixing. Thinking ahead to his return to live performances with a hopeful easing of restrictions in time, Sherman crafted the album and previously released singles ‘Homeboy’ and ‘Madness’ with his dynamic shows in mind. “I wanted to create something with a consistent groove, that allows the band and I to play freely live. The recording process was really quick, with the chord structure and vocals taking only a day to lay down. I just fiddled with the tune for the next month until I arrived at something I was super, super happy with,” Oly Sherman. ‘The World Is In A Bad Room’ is out now. •

ASTRALS FOR SYDNEY SONGWRITER AND PERFORMER CLAIRE SIMPSON, AKA ASTRALS, MUSIC IS A WAY TO ESCAPE AND TO EXPLORE SOME WONDERFUL SONIC REALMS THAT MATCH A VIBRANT IMAGINATION. With her new single ‘Daylight Drip’, ASTRALS has written a dream pop track that evokes hope and glimmering times ahead as we make our way back to normal life. A bright fusion of breathy vocals, 90’s inspired guitar vibes and clean production, the track ties into Clare’s life navigating COVID this year. It’s been an unpredictable year that has forced her to face uncertainty and indecision head on. “Everything was pretty unstable in the world. It was hard to make any concrete plans and move into a new phase of my life. In this way, ‘Daylight Drip’ is equal parts inspired by the feelings of restlessness, being stuck and living in the uncertainty that COVID-19 conjured, as well as feeling of being on the edge of a new beginning.” Working with videographer Tim Cheeseman, ASTRALS headed to locations up at Harrington and Crowdy Head, NSW mid-north coast, to film. The result has a great DIY feel about it. Developing her sound over the last three years, ASTRALS is a talented fresh face on the Sydney scene; one that we’ll be seeing and hearing more from. ‘Daylight Drip’ is out now. •

Produced and mixed by Tim Fitz from Middle Kids, ‘Lovelost’ is the first single off Breen’s forthcoming debut album. The record, to be released through Believe/Double Drummer, is set for release in early 2021. “Dom is a singular voice in Sydney a true artist and songwriter. Every Dom Breen song has its own unique spirit. ‘Lovelost’ has this howling, frenetic energy, and an inner sensitivity.” says Tim Fitz. “It’s a sad song in disguise. It’s a photo of woe put through the happiness filter. I wanted a song about hopelessness and uncertainty to sound bright and confident,”explains Dominic Breen.
DOMINIC BREEN SINCE 2018, SYDNEY BASED SONGWRITER AND PERFORMER DOMINIC BREEN HAS BEEN CAPTIVATING AUDIENCES, INDUSTRY AND FELLOW ARTISTS ALIKE. HIS TWO ACCLAIMED EPS INTRODUCED LISTENERS TO BREEN’S DISTINCTIVE MUSICAL WORLD; AS WELL AS HIS RARE GIFT FOR HIGHLY PERSONAL, OBSERVATIONAL LYRICS THAT EVOKE A VIVID SENSE OF PLACE AND TIME.
Breen’s sound is uniquely Australian but subtle familiarities are met with new, exciting deviations that transcend the ‘Australiana’ badge - sunny acoustic guitar sits alongside crunchy, distorted bass. A talented multi-instrumentalist, Breen wrote and played almost every instrument on ‘Lovelost’, apart from the bass which was provided by Fitz. His most immediate track to date, ‘Lovelost’ is a thrilling taste of what’s to come. ‘Lovelost’ is out now. •

FOLLOWING A STRING OF STRIKING VISUAL RELEASES THIS YEAR, SYDNEY’S DUST OF US BACK IT UP FOR THE FINAL MONTHS OF 2020 WITH THEIR BRAND NEW SINGLE ‘PUNCHING BAG’. Taken from the pair’s forthcoming debut EP, due in February, the single is darker in tone and feel and collaborates with vocalist Jess Chalker. The twists and turns of ‘Punching Bag’ highlight the unique musical chemistry between brothers Ed and Lloyd Prescott. As haunting and smoky as it is propulsive and immediate, it blends a mix of electronic details and ethereal indie influences. The track came together across three different countries. The Prescott brothers recorded all the music on the Central Coast NSW before Chalker sung her parts at home in London. It was then beautiful mixed by Matthew Neighbour (Matt Corby, The Avalanches, EGOISM) in his Los Angeles studio. “It’s a pretty dark song about someone emancipating themselves from a dire situation. To me, you can read it either as a metaphorical punching bag or literally from the perspective of someone whose partner physically abuses them. Most of the lyrics came out pretty subconsciously, but at the time, I was reading Jess Hill’s brilliant book ‘See What You Made Me Do’, and I think some of the themes seeped into the song. “We asked our friend Jess Chalker to sing - her voice is stunning. It feels simultaneously strong and vulnerable at the same time and that was what the song required,” said Ed Prescott. ‘Punching Bag’ is out now. •

Painting HIMSELF INTO A
Green Corner
PAINT MIGHT NOT HAVE THE BEST REPUTATION WHEN IT COMES TO ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES BUT A LOCAL MANUFACTURER IS TURNING THIS STEREOTYPE AROUND. A Northern Beaches paint producer is not just paying lip service to the green movement.
Words: ROD BENNETT PHOTO: Colormaker Industries
It’s a genuine part of David Stuart’s life. You can see it when you look around his business, Colormaker. Solar panels cover the roof of a building, an electric car is part of its fleet, with another coming soon, and product lines perpetually seek “clean” alternatives. Last year, Warringah MP Zali Steggall officially flicked the switch to start the operating life of 100 kW worth of solar panels. David says that over a whole year, the solar installation produces enough electricity to power more than 20 local homes. “Twice as much as we need,” he says. “Our energy bill last month was $5.37.” Natural sources of power such as wind and solar were on David’s mind in the late 1990s, as an employee of Colormaker. “Even then, I wanted our screen printing product to be 100% water-based,” he says. At the time, Colormaker’s flagship product had 10-35% White Spirit (a solvent, like petrol) which meant every third bucket was going up into the atmosphere as solvent. David left the company in 1999. He first heard about the greenhouse effect as a teenager in 1976 while on a skiing holiday with his family. Another member of their ski club was an acclaimed CSIRO scientist. “He was talking to my mother about the greenhouse effect. I was casting around
looking for something to do with my life … for a cause. It stuck.” Camping was another pastime the family enjoyed. Indeed, the natural world was always in the back of David’s mind, even as he studied chemistry at uni and then worked in a laboratory. “Growing up, our family always composted and recycled,” he said. “I remember my father burying kitchen waste to compost in our back yard.” Jump forward to 2003 and David returns to Colormaker as its new owner. Now, as well as being a chemist, he also has two business degrees. He embarks on eliminating solvents from its ink and in 2005 goes to market brandishing a new sustainable product. Yet the reaction catches him off-guard. “We were met with a hostile response from the screen print industry,” he says. “They rejected us.” But while the world might not have been ready for an environmentally responsible option back then, he says there is now a much greater appetite for water-based products. Colormaker is the only independent paint manufacturer still operating on the Northern Beaches as all other outlets are affiliated with multinationals. However the Brookvale business doesn’t just produce “green” paint – there are thousands of colours in its range. It has paint for the home, for construction and waterproof coatings. It makes the industry leading LUXAPOOL® swimming pool paint for pool interiors and surrounds; plus there are PERMATONE® and PERMASET AQUA® textile screen printing inks exported to the world, and PERMAPLASTIK® scenic paints used in block buster movies. As well as diversity in products and in markets, David has seen diversity grow
in the workplace. “When I started, we had one female staff member. Today, almost half the staff are females and we can serve customers in 10 languages.” Amongst its brand ambassadors, Colormaker supports prolific indigenous artist Blak Douglas, providing him with the full range of its palette. David is still a keen cross-country skier and the snow country is where he sees the effects of climate change most acutely. “The seasons are much shorter. It’s now a rare year when you ski on only natural snow,” he says. Other passions include the arts, a conviction there should be more manufacturing in this country, the restorative effects of Natural Sequence Farming and the metaphorical lessons for better business practice embodied therein. There is also a disdain for orthodox economic theory that has been used to justify extractive practices that have gutted the community and hollowed out the industry.
“We need to really look after the communities that we live in. I guess it all comes back to - if you look after country, then the country will look after you,” he says. When he thinks about committing to green initiatives, he recalls what AFL champion, coach and now the face of Fight MND, Neale Daniher said in his auto-biography. “If you don’t want to do it, you will find 1,000 excuses, and if you do want to do it, you will find 1,000 ways.” Colormaker is finding ways to make the world a better place through colour. •

environment WITH ZALI STEGGALL, OAM MP
Is there a plan locally for the people of Warringah? Definitely. My team and I have launched “Warringah’s Roadmap to Zero” that allows people of Warringah to reduce their emissions through water, food, waste, finance, transport, energy and a range of other measures. We also recently launched the Green Recovery, encouraging local businesses to take advantage of the Federal Government’s Tax incentives to drive a green recovery. For example, businesses can buy solar panels, turn their fleet to electric vehicles or buy energy saving equipment and receive a full immediate rebate. They can lower their operating costs and supercharge Australia’s roadmap to Net Zero. I’m also a proud advocate to keep the beautiful coastline and areas under
the Sydney Harbour Trust free for the public to use and enjoy without the threat of commercialisation. I’ve also strongly opposed the application known as “PEP 11” to drill for oil off the coastline from Newcastle to Manly. The federal opposition have said they will achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. Do you have a specific plan on how this goal can be achieved? And do you feel it’s possible? Yes, my Climate Change Bill sets out very clearly how we can get to Net Zero emissions by 2050. It’s important that the target is put into legislation. We need to have clear coordination and tracking of each sector. Standing as an independent, in your view, has the federal government made any steps towards action on climate change since election? The Federal government has released its Technology Investment Roadmap, which is necessary but only one part of the response required. It is not effective without a legislated emission reduction goal, coordination across all sectors and clear assessment of risk and adaptation measures needed in parallel to mitigation. The moderate liberals who have campaigned need to send a stronger message to the party that Australia’s stance on climate change is going to jeopardise its relationship with key trading partners including the United States, United Kingdom and Japan. We need more action from the Government.
ZaliSteggall
What is your opinion on nuclear energy? Does it fit in with a sustainable plan away from coal? I have no objection to nuclear energy, but I do not believe it is competitive with renewable energy. The Climate Change Bill is technology agnostic. It is important that we consider all available low emission technology. I believe the most important factors are to prioritise technologies available now and offer a fiscally sensible transition to Net Zero.
social
Hi Zali, the environment is a major concern for most Northern Beaches people. Your overall policy was to take action on climate change. What has been your biggest achievement so far, and where is your overall plan positioned at the moment. Hi COVERED. Magazine, Climate change has definitely been one of my core focus since being elected. In November I was proud to introduce the Climate Change Bill to Parliament that has now been referred to a Parliamentary inquiry. The Bill legislates Net Zero by 2050 and puts in place sensible policies to address risks and adaptation. This is the first inquiry to examine the merits of Net Zero by 2050.
If you were Prime Minister, what would you do in the first 100 days? Where do I begin? Legislate to Net Zero by 2050; have long term and sustainable environmental policies that will prepare and assess the climate change risk; have greater female representation in Parliament and the Cabinet; better fund the Family Law Court; ensure the PEP-11 gas exploration permit does not get renewed. Is there a foreseeable next federal election date? And can you confirm you’ll be running as an independent or take the vacant liberal position for the seat of Warringah? I hope that the Government goes full term to focus on the important issues that Australia faces. I am very proud and honoured to represent the people of Warringah. As an Independent, I am able to speak on behalf of the people – I am not beholden to a party line and can speak and vote freely. •

Politics with Mark Smith
GLADYS BEREJIKLIAN WITH MANLY MP JAMES GRIFFIN
LOCAL POLITICAL PUNDIT MARK SMITH TALKS GLADYS, GRANTS AND WHY WE SHOULD GIFT THE FATIGUED PREMIER A HOLIDAY. To say 2020 has been different is an obvious understatement. On the political stage, the US election will be studied and written about for years to come. My take on that circus is for another day. Domestically, in NSW, the Premier Gladys Berejiklian has run into some turbulent times. After starting the pandemic with the Ruby Princess debacle, Berejiklian seemed to steady the ship (pardon the pun), bringing in ďŹ rst class contact tracing that, at the
moment, has kept NSW from suffering the same fate as Victoria. The Premier has been lauded for the way her and her government have handled the crisis, mostly keeping businesses running where possible, while maintaining the health system to stave off another wave. However, after her recent appearance at the royal commission, and her disclosure that she was in a relationship with a former member of parliament being investigated for possible corrupt activity, things have not gone well. Over the last weeks, she admitted that after having a ‘scratchy throat’, she was tested for COVID-19, and then went
straight back to work instead of isolating herself. She proceeded to use the words ‘ordinary people’ to describe what other people should do. Never a good idea. And now, while being questioned about her overseeing of $250 million of grants, being accused of blatant ‘pork-barreling’, the Premier basically said the public should expect this and get over it. Some have suggested the Premier is tired. This is to be expected. Gladys Berejiklian has worked extremely hard in service to the state and its people, and everyone deserves a holiday. Not many of the ‘ordinary people’ of NSW would begrudge the Premier of some time off. •

CLUB
FOR CLOSE TO 100 YEARS, THE MANLY 16FT SKIFF CLUB REMAINED OPEN THROUGH WORLD WARS, WILD STORMS AND EVEN BEER STRIKES. But the iconic northern beaches venue finally met its match on March 23 when it joined thousands of licensed premises around the state in shutting its doors for nine weeks due to the COVID19 pandemic. There’s no doubt it was a body blow to staff and members, not to mention a financial impost no-one saw coming. But as Winston Churchill famously declared: Never let a good crisis go to waste. The skiff club’s progressive board and executive team used the time behind locked doors to reset, redesign and reinvigorate the way things are done. Maintenance jobs that had been shelved for a rainy day became a priority. Changes to the dining experience were fast-tracked.
“We tried to turn a negative into a positive,” secretary-manager Matt Hazell explained. “It was a chance to tidy a few things up and put a few systems in place that we may have delayed. “I like change. I see it as a challenge and to have people happy and see benefits of that change is pleasing.
“We’ve always been about improving the experience of visiting the club.” Adhering to strict Covid protocols, which capped numbers at 184 seated patrons at any one time, the club re-opened on June 1 and was immediately swamped by members and guests keen to taste the new normal. Booking a table was not only mandatory, it brought certainty. As Matt said, “It took the guesswork out of it. No longer were you taking the chance of coming down here and not being able to get a seat.” Apart from the obvious signs we were living in the Coronavirus age – think sanitiser bottles and Covid officers the biggest change was in the bar/ restaurant areas.
“We have been looking at online ordering for 12-18 months and the Covid lockdown gave us the chance to expedite those plans,” Matt said. “Previously, everyone ordered at the counter, got a buzzer and you came and picked up your food when it was ready. “The pick-up area became a real choke point because you could have 20 meals sitting there. “With the online ordering, staff that were clearing tables are now able to also take food to tables. “It makes it easier to pump food out of the kitchen area because you’re not waiting for people to come and pick up a meal.”
For the first time, patrons were able to order from their phones and have food and drinks delivered to their tables.
Many things have changed at the skiff club, but there is one constant.
It’s been a real game changer, with Matt estimating one in four meals are now ordered via this mode.
With that stunning harbour view, a cold drink in hand and laidback vibes it’s still a five-star experience. •

THE ABILITY TO ESCAPE TO NATURE, IN BOTH COMFORT AND STYLE, IS WHY GLAMPING HAS BECOME ONE OF THE HOTTEST GETAWAYS OF OUR TIME. Summer holidays are finally here, and while dreams of backpacking to Bali, a family getaway to Fiji or a white, winter European escape are off the cards, the good news is from the heavenly Northern Beaches, we have everything we need for a sweet summer holiday right at our fingertips. Imagine beautiful balmy nights snoozing under the stars, lazy days with a beer, a book on the beach, and epic adventures the kids will remember forever; all without breaking the bank, getting on a plane or working up a sweat. Yep, we’re talking minimal effort and luxury comforts. Because let’s face it,

Freshwater local, Fiona Peet, has 8-yearold twin boys. During Covid, their family purchased a second-hand motorhome which inspired them to explore NSW. And while a motorhome might not be some people’s idea of glamping, that’s exactly what it is - camping with all the comforts of home. “The best bit is you have exactly what you need without the extra work,” says Fiona. “A roof over your head, a comfy bed, toilet and shower. It’s perfect.” This Christmas, the family-of-four will enjoy glamping, motorhome style, at the NRMA Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park in Narrabeen. “Between home schooling and working from home this year, we’re ready for a change of scenery,” she says. “We love the Holiday Park - it’s only 15 minutes from home, but it feels like a world away.”

we’ve done enough hard stuff this year, and it’s time for a retreat; which is why we’re all going Glamping! If you’re not ultra experienced in the alluring world of glamping, imagine the fun of camping - friends, fresh air and freedom - coupled with the joys of a more expensive holiday - proper beds and comfy doonas, hot showers, and a working dunny. And all this for next to no effort. Glamping can be realised in plenty of ways, from stylish yurts and fairy lights, to ordering the whole 5-star set up and having someone else set it up for you. The main thing to note is, gone are the days of bickering over tent pegs and rolling up your own sleeping bag.
WHERE WILL YOU BE GLAMPING? So, where will you be glamping this holiday? Let’s face it, from home schooling, home working and home chilling this year, one thing COVID-19 did bring us was our love for all things local. The inability to move and directive to stay put certainly bought us all… home.
Lakeside boasts one of the only beachfront caravan and camping locations in Sydney. It’s perfectly plonked on the shores of Narrabeen Lake, an idyllic spot for paddle boarding, fishing, swimming and BBQs, and a two-minute stroll to Narrabeen Beach, one of Australia’s most iconic surf spots. And for the adventurous, epic sand dunes connect the beach and the lake, providing action and sandboarding for kids big and small. Whether you’ve got your own motorhome, pop-up trailer, tipi or tentinspired yurt, you can rent a cabin or villa, caravan or camp site at Narrabeen. If trekking a little further from home is more your style, there are plenty of great spots around NSW on offer. From the Blue Mountains to Mudgee, and Jervis Bay to the Hunter Valley, our spectacular state offers some of the best outdoor experiences you can find. So if you’re wondering where to book your next summer escape, do your research and grab your pillows. Hang up the fairy lights and pour yourself a wine. We’ll be thinking of you while you wait for Santa and bid farewell to 2020, in your comfiest outdoor set up yet.

Finding your life’s purpose has been a buzz trend for the past 10 years and Northern Beaches boy, Mat Hall, has fulfilled the brief perfectly. In February 2019, Mat skillfully combined his love of travel and affiliation with life on the road with his trade and skills as a carpenter and cabinet maker to launch Happy Camper Conversions the ultimate in custom van fit outs. “I lived in Canada for four years then travelled around Central and South America and Japan. When I got home, I didn’t want to go back to carpentry,” recalls Mat. “I fitted out my own van and started using it as a weekender.” And that’s when everything changed. People fell in love with Mat’s creative approach and he quickly realised he’d done something a little out of the ordinary. Check out Mat’s instagram account and you’ll see a variety of vans decked out with compact designs, bespoke pieces of furniture, and cabinetry excellence that wouldn’t look out of place in a high-end residential home. “I took a cabinet maker’s approach and made it look like it belonged,” he explains. “After the reaction I got

to my own van I thought I’d give it a shot and do the same for others. Initially I had the intention of doing carpentry on the side, but it got so busy, I haven’t done any work on houses since.”
DAY DREAMER Mat grew up on the Northern Beaches and enjoyed regular camping trips with his family as a kid. Now, from his workshop in Narrabeen, he spends his days turning other people’s Pinterestinspired dreams into a reality. “My clients spend hours on Pinterest and have a pretty good idea of what they like. Generally, I get them to come into my workshop and we sit in the van as I show them different designs, finishings and appliances. I think I’ve seen every layout and design. Some people say, ‘I don’t care, just do something’ but I love it when a client knows what they want.” You’d be forgiven for thinking Mat’s clients are all similar types of people, but that’s certainly not the case. From 18-year-old millennials looking for
“There is a bit of misconception about who I work for. At the moment, I’m doing a job for a 45-year-old, his wife and two kids. I did one for a 60-year-old lady who wants to retire and live in her van. There are teenagers and kids in their 20s who love to travel and lots of people who have corporate jobs in the city and are buying a van to use as a getaway. I work with a whole variety of people.” One thing Mat’s clients do have in common is the deep desire to escape and have fun, which is fine by him. “I like the idea of helping others get on the road and live life the way it should be, free,” he says.
COVIDHAPPY CAMPERS Not surprisingly, there’s been an upward trend for Mat’s kind of work since Covid hit Australia back in March 2019. “It was already trending that way but there’s definitely been an uplift this year.
$70-$80,000. I guess the average cost is around $15-$18,000.”
I think Covid has given people a kick in the pants. There’s been no overseas travel and we’ve seen quite a boom.”
According to Mat, no job is too big, or too small and he’s open to all kinds of requests. “The huge jobs are probably the most rewarding to finish and the best to look at,” he admits, “But I enjoy the quick and fast jobs too. Ones that take three to four days, and you take an old, beat up, piece of crap and turn it into something that looks amazing inside, is cool.”

From the snow to the beach and back to his workshop in Narrabeen, this creative soul loves to travel and hopes you feel the same. •
So what kind of cash are we talking about when it comes to making an investment like this? “It depends on the size of the van and what you want to put it in,” says Mat. “You could spend $15,000 on a complete fit out or $15,000 on electrical alone. SPICE
There’s a new gin in town. Amber Spiced Gin is the fifth gin released by Northern Beaches local, Manly Spirits Co. Distillery. True to their approach of capturing ‘nature in a bottle’, they’ve created a coastal inspired gin that encapsulates the essence of our Beaches. “For us, summer holidays on the Beaches is all about endless days in the waves,” says Vanessa Wilton, co-founder of Manly Spirits. Immersing in the essence of the holiday season, this delightfully festive gin will get you in the mood for those long summer days spent at the beach, getting lost in the waves and enjoying a refreshing post-surf G&T.

A New Home for Harbord
IN 2017, GLENN PIPER KNOCKED ON THE DOOR OF THE HARBORD BEACH HOTEL AND ASKED IF HE COULD PURCHASE THE PUB. THE ANSWER WAS NO, BUT NO DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN NEVER. NOW, THIS LOCAL LAD IS LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS FOR A SPECTACULAR NEW VENUE THAT WILL HONOUR THE RICH HISTORY, SURF CULTURE AND SPIRIT OF HARBORD.
As the breeze floats up Moore Road from our favourite beach, it dances over the white walls and through the open glass windows to meet vintage furnishings, art deco details and a spectacular round timber bar. The old facade that long defined the Harbord Beach Hotel has been thoughtfully and slowly stripped away, exposing beautiful heritage arches and giving new life to classic interiors common in a Californian bungalow. The memorable blue carpets have been removed and replaced with polished concrete. There’s a double-sided fireplace and timber floorboards in the Sports Bar. With a surfboard rack out front and a courtyard for the kids, it’ll be hard to recognise our big old pub on the corner. Something special is taking shape in Freshie.

“I competed in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and represented Australia in my youth. I had Australian records when I was 16 and a grant with the NSW Institute of Sport,” he tells us. “Mum and Dad wanted me to continue, but I lost my focus and wanted to earn some money. I quit swimming and went straight into property investment and spent my time learning about analysis and understanding trends.” Glenn and his childhood sweetheart, and now wife, Alex, fell in love with the

But let’s step back to that bold knock on the door in 2017.
GLENN PIPER, HARBORD HOTEL
“I had my eyes on this place for a while,” says Glenn, of his property investment journey. “I knocked on the door and said, “Hi, I’m Glenn. Are you interested in selling? John said no a couple of times but I believe I was the first local who had approached him so he was always open to the idea - it just had to be done John’s way. The night we signed the agreement, I was home with my wife and kids.” Glenn teamed up with his business partner, and fellow local, Lachlan Cottee and a number of other investors to make the momentous deal happen, which it finally did in 2019. “The guys involved are mostly local and they are really passionate about the venue, like me. It’s great to have a good crew involved,” says Glenn proudly.

In 2017, as a 30-year old optimist with huge dreams and a big vision, Glenn Piper knocked on the door of the Harbord Beach Hotel and asked the owner, John Thorpe, if he could buy it. John, who had owned the pub with Trish King since 1978, said, ‘No’. But no does not always mean never.

At Balsa, it’s as simple, and natural as that.

“We want this brand to elevate the whole area and fly the flag for Freshwater,” he says. “I started by researching Duke (Kahanamoku). From 1956 onwards; our beach and surf culture changed dramatically. The Americans brought over their Balsa Malibu boards to Australia and that’s when we moved away from the Duke. The 1950s to 1970s was a crucial time in our beach history.” In his exploration, Glenn discovered the Brookvale 6, a young group of men who started making surfboards out of the neighbouring suburb. They began with the Balsa and turned Brookie into what many referred to as surf city. “They were dubbed the Brookvale Mafia and at one point, 90% of surfboards were

The Hotel’s brand new restaurant, Balsa, also pays homage to the influence the board had in Australia. Under the watchful eye of Head Chef, Adam Rust, salt, wood and smoke will dominate the kitchen. “Like the way Balsa influenced our surf culture, there’ll be West Coast American influence in our food, cooking style, flavours and ingredients,” adds Glenn. And for early risers, a coffee cart will adorn the courtyard along with a breakfast menu which the venue has never seen before.
LEAVING A LEGACY Glenn is a passionate, focused and persistent young man with a big dream. He has his heart set on creating a space that not only celebrates Freshwater’s surf history and dreamy beach culture but where our community come together. “I want to create a place we can all come home to,” he says sincerely.

It was once occupied by the Auckland Garage – home to a residential dwelling, drive-in service station, retail surf shop and dry cleaner during its 147 years. The adjacent Manly Civic Club took ownership in 1978 and kept operating its licensed premises until 2009 when it closed its doors for 11 years.
With its high ceilings, white-washed industrial-style brickwork and timber beams, it has a cathedral-like feel with a heavenly menu to match. Using only fresh ingredients every dish is thoroughly road-tested in the club’s brand new kitchen before offered to members and guests. Ditto the quality tables, chairs, utensils, plates and bowls – all sourced by staff from hospitality warehouses to ensure they have the right fit and feel. Even the menus are housed in handcrafted folders.
Steven jumped at the opportunity to be part of something new and different.
On the day COVERED. visits for lunch, Executive Chef Steven Gilmour has put together a brilliant trifecta of grilled barramundi with roasted Dutch carrots, salmon ceviche with pickled ginger and Dijon dressing and duck liver pâté, caramelised onion, cranberry compote toasted sourdough.
“There are not many times in your career you get offered the chance to work in a brand new place in Manly with brand new equipment and a brand new kitchen,” the Scottish-born chef points out.
Seafood is The Garage’s speciality and the food tastes as good as it looks. It’s a fine dining experience without the price. “We focus on fresh, affordable food and we often have members and guests come up to the kitchen to tell us how fantastic it was,” Steven says. “We are particularly proud of our seafood menu.”

NEW DINING BENCHMARK
“You might have an expectation on what the club is based on the past, but your view will change once you’ve been here.”
And if membership numbers are anything to go by – 6000 at last count after just five months of operation - it’s clear The Manly Club is doing plenty right. “We set out to be genuine in everything we did – from the building itself, to the staff, the furnishings, the food and drinks,” Joel explains. “We think it sets us apart from anything else in Manly.” No arguments here. •
The Manly Club is an amalgam of the old and new. And the focal point is The Garage restaurant, nestled behind the eyecatching Auckland façade.

Here’s what’s been Up in Sydney and Upstate over the last few months.
Words & Images:
UPSTATE
EXPANDING OUR REAL ESTATE REACH ACROSS THE NORTHERN BEACHES Sydney’s Northern Beaches is a vibrant place, bustling with commercial and residential properties that provide great returns whether you intend to buy, sell or lease real estate. We know this first-hand. To help you maximise these opportunities, Upstate has been diversifying into Sydney suburbs like Manly, Frenchs Forest, Bayview and Mona Vale – sharing our unique approach to real estate further and wider than ever before.
property
MANLY
LET’S NOT DENY IT: 2020 HAS BEEN A TOUGH YEAR FOR PEOPLE AND BUSINESSES ACROSS ALL INDUSTRIES. As the largest residential and commercial property agency across Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Upstate has experienced our share of difficulties managing the restrictions and slower economic growth resulting from this pandemic. However, we didn’t let these challenges stop us from banding together with our local community to persevere and continue to strive for success. With our customer-centric focus, innovative approach and our ability to nurture great relationships, we were still able to achieve great results – not just for us, but for our cherished clients. That’s what we’re here for, after all.
42
Manly is considered as one of Sydney’s favourite playgrounds due to its stellar beach-side location that leaves people in awe, time and time again. It also holds many economic opportunities with its long-standing reputation as the tourist destination (one that will return soon). Manly’s median property prices over the last year range from $3,001,000 for houses to $1,468,000 for units.
FRENCHS FOREST As part of the Forest District, Frenchs Forest gets you closer to nature with its wide streets and surrounding leafy outlook. The Frenchs Forest property market is also considered a Sydney market that’s in high demand. The median house price recorded last year coming in at $1,615,000.
Mona Vale’s property market is also in high demand. Right now, the median property prices over the last year range from $1,835,000 for houses to $1,230,000 for units. These are just some of the fantastic suburbs we’ve been helping our clients get the best from, and we’re excited to explore them further with you. UP IN SALES PERFORMANCE ACROSS SYDNEY Now more than ever, Upstate is committed to achieving superior results. Through our resilient attitude and consistent hard work, we aim to help you fulfil your property goals. If you take a quick look at some of our recent Upstate residential sales results, or our recent leasing results, you’ll see how we’ve been making a positive difference to buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants over the past few months. This year, we have already sold 306 properties and leased 459. We’re super proud of this, all things considered, because behind each result are very happy people. The best part is that this is actually a huge improvement from the 202 sold and 439 properties we rented in the same nine month period last year. Want to discuss your own property needs? We’re always here to help you. Our Upstate real estate specialists can make selling your property easy, well-managed and transparent. That’s because we’re a big agency, with the heart and determination of a boutique one. Our personalised service will help you get the most out of your property and come out of 2020/21 in a better place. Speak to your local Upstate team today and we’ll show you the possibilities that are earning excellent results. •
BAYVIEW Bayview is a beautifully hilly suburb known as the home of Australia’s largest yacht importer and Pittwater’s largest yacht charter fleet. As of today, Bayview’s median house price last year was $2,200,000.

7 TIPS TO SELLING YOUR PROPERTY
for more Less is more We’ll be honest, this is not the easiest step but it’s key in allowing the potential buyer to really see themselves in the home. And it’s free. The goal here is to make the space feel uncluttered so buyers can imagine their personal belongings on display. HOW TO DO IT: Remove anything that does not serve a purpose or facilitates ambience within the room. Clear away all personal photos and belongings so they can imagine their own family living there.
Let there be light If natural light is not available, adding stylish lamps in dark areas is a simple but effective change that makes a huge difference to the look and feel of the room. HOW TO DO IT: Replace any harsh fluorescent lights with warmer, natural looking lights. For energy efficiency, go for LED lights.
Consistency is key
A touch of paint Walls and floors – when they’re clean, tidy and fresh, they pretty much go unnoticed. When they’re dirty, scuffed, old or outdated, they stand out like a sore thumb. HOW TO DO IT: If your paintwork is looking good, think about new carpet or rugs. If they’re both looking worse for wear, this is the place we suggest you spend your money on over anything else. Use light, bright colours in neutral tones to make the area look like a blank canvas.
Know your knobs Changing up your fittings and fixtures is a small change that provides a big impact. HOW TO DO IT: Replace kitchen cabinet handles, aged door knobs and cabinet doors with new versions. They don’t have to be the most expensive or even the most extravagant. Clean minimal versions are all it takes to spruce up a tired space.
The key to any form of styling is to create synergies that complement one another.
property
HOW TO DO IT: Pick a colour scheme and stick to it. Minimalism is your best option if you’re not very confident in your styling abilities.
Is it spick and span? This is a very obvious, but frequently overlooked step. The problem is, we rarely have our home in perfect condition. If we live in a space for a long time, we become accustomed to dirt on skirting boards or unclean windows, but these are the areas that are noticed very quickly by potential buyers. HOW TO DO IT: Clean areas that you often leave i.e. top of the fridge, windows and walls.

Speak to the Experts You don’t have to do this alone. It’s normal to lean on your agent to get your home to the highest standard. The team behind them will work with you to make suggestions and discuss your budget so you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck. HOW TO DO IT: Do your research to find the people you trust to sell your asset. Get feedback on any potential setbacks to visualise how you will turn them around. •

Brigitte van Tulder is a passionate business owner who boasts 20 years in custom-made jewellery design. She is also a Diamond Grader, with qualifications from the Gemological Association of Australia in Design and Gemmology. This, along with her passion for people, gives her the edge when it comes to knowledge, experience and quality.
MANLY LOCAL, BRIGITTE VAN TULDER, IS A TRUE PROFESSIONAL WITH AN INTENSE PASSION FOR CUSTOM-MADE JEWELLERY, FAMILY HEIRLOOMS AND SUPPORTING WOMEN IN NEED. THIS IS THE STORY OF A TALENTED GEM WITH A HEART OF GOLD.
“I love helping people design their forever piece of jewellery,” says Brigitte. “It’s such a beautiful process. Whether it’s an engagement ring, an anniversary present or something they have always wanted to treat themselves with. Many of my clients have thought about their special piece for years and years.”
she explains. “I love remodelling existing jewellery and utilising client’s stones to make one-off pieces too. The custom process can take four to six weeks.”
STAR GAZING Like many people in 2020, lockdown during Covid-19 provided a great time of reflection for Brigitte and isolation, birthing her stunning new jewellery collection, By Brigitte. “I closed the shop for a month during Covid and it really was a case of sitting on the balcony, looking up at the sky and star gazing; reassessing life and looking forward,” she recalls. “And I love the range I created. It’s all hand made and very elegant. Plus it’s a good price point.” In celestial-inspired perfection, every item in the By Brigitte collection is simple, stunning and easy to wear, lovingly hand made with 9ct handbeaten gold, and delicately defined by the moon and stars.
And with custom jewellery design comes a custom design experience. Brigitte has the perfect space inside her store to discuss diamonds, design and budget. “I work with all our clients from initial design and sketch stage, right through to the finished product,”

“I love helping people design their forever piece of jewellery.” BRIGITTE VAN TULDER
Along with her own creativity Brigitte says other trends are on the rise, thanks to the pandemic. “Covid has encouraged us all to slow down and made many people stop and think about their lives,” she says. “I’m getting a lot of mums and dads coming in wanting to design jewellery for their children - signet rings and crests for new family heirlooms. We’re creating lots of beautiful pieces.”
MANLY’S FAVOURITE JEWELLER As a whole jeweller, specialising in custom jewellery design, restorations and jewellery repairs, Manly Jewellers is your family-trusted jeweller.
Lovingly designed in Manly
“How nice to be a lady in business and still going through Covid,” claims Brigitte, who proudly uses Australian gold, Australian labour and supports women in need. “I am a single mum raising two teenagers, so I’m conscious about educating women on their finances and once a year, I design a piece of jewellery and auction it for Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter. In the last few years, each piece has raised $5000 - $10,000.” When she’s not working her magic at the shop, you’ll mostly find Brigitte reading a book on the beach or playing tennis with her kids. “We love hanging out in Manly,” she says. “Why would we go anywhere else?”

Mindfulness, sustainability and wellness are all top trends for the the coming year, which is synonymous with the garden. This translates to calming natural tones, cooling green highlights, plenty of indoor plants and a very chilled-out vibe.
Always choose the right plant for the position, matching light conditions, air conditioning or fresh air environments. Remember to keep a good watering regime to ensure success.
STATEMENT LIVING ROOMS HOW TO ADD A SOOTHING, CALM VIBE TO YOUR LIVING SPACE Plants work in a variety of ways to lift an interior. They can be a useful decoration, adding texture, colour and height to a room. Greenery creates a sense of calm and tranquillity, and many plants also remove toxins from the atmosphere, so you get the added bonus of cleaner air.
50
The largest and most likely the brightest room is where you can have fun and make a statement. Plants like palms, fiddle leaf figs, rubber trees, happy plants and dracaenas are good choices. If you have display shelving, break it up with some trailing plants.
BLISSFUL BEDROOMS We all want sweet dreams, so try growing a perfumed plant like Stephanotis, a white perfumed creeper, or Hoya, with its intoxicating pale pink flowers and its long trailing foliage. Alternatively, use a flowering plant like an orchid so the first thing you see in the morning brings you joy. What a way to start the day.
BLOOMING BATHROOMS Humidity and bathrooms often go together, but low-lighting can also be a factor. Go for a large-leafed plant that makes the most of its chlorophyll and can capture light well. A philodendron is ideal in this situation. They come in climbing and non-climbing forms, variegated leaf types and all have a drip point at the end of each leaf, so they can quickly shed any excess water should things really steam up in there.

Swimming A LIFE SKILL FOREVER With the calamity of a year that has been, the abundance of time at home and many community pools and swimming lessons put on hold, sadly the statistics of drownings have risen exponentially in recent times.
“Little do you know but it all starts in the shower at home. Allowing your baby to feel and experience water running over their entire body, especially their face and ears, is the start of teaching them breath control.
Living on the Northern Beaches with our love of the outdoors and water-based activities, it’s of prime importance that we teach our kids a ‘Life Skill Forever’.
“This is an essential part of water safety aiding in confidence during small submersions when swimming lessons begin.” says Simpson.
“Understanding the importance of water safety skills and helping children build confidence and awareness of what happens to their bodies when they are in the water are crucial.” says Narelle Simpson, former Olympic Swim Coach and founder of the NS Swim School.
At NS Swim School, parent and baby classes are central in building confidence and learning fundamental skills of survival and water safety.
“The value of starting your child’s water confidence early and practising water safety skills with infants, from as young as six months old, is vital.
Foundations of swimming includes basic holds, body positioning, breath control and simple movements. Your child’s ability to be able to roll over and float, hold onto an edge and climb out of a pool are essential skills;
and an automatic response to survival if they fall into the water. NS Swim School invites all parents and babies from six to 36 months to join their classes. Start your child’s pathway to a safe and happy swimming life. Gather your friends and mother’s groups and learn socially together. First lesson is free when you sign up for 10 lessons. Let NS Swim School start your swimming journey today.

STOCK UP WITH SUMMER MARKET FRESH WITH YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL GROCER, THE HARBORD GROWERS MARKET FABULOUS FIGS Did you know that figs are a part of the mulberry family? Their tender, syrupy nature pairs perfectly with prosciutto and radicchio for a seasonal summer salad. Or, why not create sticky cinnamon figs for a light summer dessert? Plus, they’re rich in minerals and antioxidants while tasting amazing too.
PINEAPPLES While their position on a pizza may be divisive, we all have to agree that pineapples are just a part of an Australian summer. With just one bite, it transports us to a tropical holiday destination. Chargrill them on the barbeque and serve up with some fresh Australian prawns for a fresh summer salad or place some on a burger. The possibilities are endless.
GREEN VEGES & FRUITS
PEACHES & NECTARINES
As they say, you’ve gotta’ eat your greens! But why not spice them up a little bit to make the perfect accompaniment for the main event. Pair some spinach, rocket, fennel and basil together with a squirt of lemon for a delicious, refreshing side salad, or grill some dukkha sprinkled zucchini on the barbeque and top with some sorrel.
Stone fruit is synonymous with summer, with peaches and nectarines being many favourites. Pop them on top of some Greek yoghurt and granola for the perfect post-beach snack or just enjoy them by themselves. If you’re feeling super adventurous, why not create a peach and nectarine upside-down cake.
Packed with a great dose of Vitamin C, red cabbage is an antioxidant-rich, immune boosting machine. In comparison to green cabbage, red cabbage contains ten times more vitamins and antioxidants, all while tasting divine in a fresh summer slaw to enjoy at one of our stunning beaches.
Tomatoes are a summer go-to due to their refreshing nature. Start your day with some fresh tomato and zaatar on sourdough toast. Or, create a divine tomato caprese salad that’s sure to impress with buffalo mozzarella, basil, balsamic vinegar and EVO oil – the perfect side dish for a summer get-together or casual lunch outdoors.

Going through the
change What is Perimenopause? This refers to the time a woman’s body begins to make the natural transition to menopause, marking the end of the reproductive years. Some women will move through this transition quite happily. However, for some it takes months, if not years, for the hormonal in-balance of hot flushes, irregular periods, chills and night sweats, mood changes and weight gain to end. Add in today’s Covid-19 epidemic and all the pressures associated with this, it’s time to learn how to re-invent, liberate and balance our bodies.
As a Pro-age woman, these effective lifestyle tips will change your body and your life, help to resolve increased weight, which in turn will aid good gut health, reduce bloating, itchiness, forgetfulness and out-of-control feelings. You will experience an increase in energy and bring a renewed happiness and joy to life. Body and Balance’s mantra ‘Live Stronger, Fitter, Happier and Longer’ is an effective way to help you reach those goals. These will help you through this premenopausal transition.
DRINK WATER As we are 70 percentage water, drinking filtered water is crucial for balancing bodily functions. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver, and this process requires that you be well hydrated.
REDUCE OR CUT OUT ALCOHOL The analogy of these menopausal symptoms is often referred to as ‘Seven Dwarfs of Menopause’ - Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful and Psycho. This ‘change’ can be so liberating with the help of options such as mind-body-balance to eliminate every one of these symptoms.
The most effective way of decreasing unwanted fat is to reduce the intake of alcohol. The reason is the sugars that we love add up to stored fat in all the wrong places. A personal trick is never drink during the week and enjoy your favourite drop on the weekend or special events.
At Body and Balance, ‘our tribe’ is here to support you through what can be a difficult time of your life.
Getting your body moving with kilojoule burning activities is an uplifting way to change your body shape. This will also increase endorphins to balance your mind and body. I’m passionate about movement, music and fun and love to include ‘Old School’ aerobics in many of my classes. So, come and join me.
CARDIO BASED EXERCISE
Mind Body awareness, natural therapies, nutrition and fitness and wellness sessions are a great way to balance your hormones and get you back into feeling and looking fantastic.
EAT HEALTHY The problem for women heading into the perimenopausal and the menopause stage is the constant one-size for all fitness and fat loss programs. This can create even more hormonal imbalances, particularly for women after 40.
This is one of the easiest ways to quickly and effectively reduce symptoms of menopause. Eat more natural, healthier alternatives such as fruits and vegetables, lean meats, good fats and wholesome snacks.
HAND WEIGHTS Hand weights are a fantastic way to increase your cardio output and weight-loss. This stimulates new muscle tissue growth which translates to a higher metabolism.
lifestyle
MOST WOMEN 40 PLUS YEARS AND SOME AS YOUNG AS 37 WILL HAVE ENTERED THE PERIMENOPAUSAL STAGE OF THEIR LIFE.
HIIT CLASSES High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT is a short, intense burst of aerobic intervals between less intense bouts of aerobics. It’s great at burning kilojoules, losing weight, and building muscle. This can also help you lower blood pressure and blood sugar, while improving oxygen blood flow.
JOIN A CLASS Finding the right balance of fitness and wellness is essential. At Body and Balance, you will find an exercise regime to suit you and join a community on the same journey mindset. Summer Stephen Flewellen and Lee Drury were at a summer festival, sharing a bottle of fine red wine with friends when, one by one, their glasses fell over. Cue utter disappointment and the perfect catalyst for a great new idea. “It was a cracker of a day and a cracker of a red,” says Glass on the Grass cofounder, inventor and design director, Stephen Flewellen. “Unfortunately the sensation was short lived.”

The dynamic duo returned to the Northern Beaches and Glass on the Grass was born - cleverly designed and beautifully executed slide-on wine coasters that stabilise your favourite wine glass anywhere. Genius! “This isn’t just about drinking wine,” says CEO, co-founder, and Head of Brand and Marketing, Lee Drury. “The whole idea behind our business is to celebrate life outdoors, in style, like we do on the Beaches. It’s about enjoying good food, good wine and magical moments with family and friends.”
“THE WHOLE IDEA BEHIND GLASS ON THE GRASS IS TO CELEBRATE LIFE OUTDOORS.” are so passionate about their business and the Australian made, eco-friendly products they produce. “We have spent the past five years building everything from scratch and were determined to work with as many local suppliers as possible from the moulding company to the printers to the company that supplies the boxes for posting,” says Lee. “Stephen is an industrial designer and retail design specialist. He was trained and worked in the UK where all the world’s best designers come from. He’s at the top of his game. Our products are not only beautiful to look at, they are easy to use and they actually work,” she says proudly. Almost nothing for this team has been outsourced. They have done so much of the hard work themselves, from sketching ideas and 3D printing their designs to creating prototypes and custom-made colours, taking photos, building websites and designing point of sale. And with Lee’s extensive background in Brand and Marketing, they have excelled in bringing their Aussie brand to life.

That was it. Daily priorities shifted sharply to maintaining life - shelter, food, bed and dry clothes. There were no sinks, showers nor basins. The entire camp was sustained by a single tap and with nightly temps venturing well below zero. After having my liberties deprived and being tested beyond my perceived daily limitations, I was confronted by who I genuinely was in a primal state, a pure version, free of pretence and ‘keeping face’. It was liberating and exhilarating.
CURL CURL DAD, AND CELEBRITY TRAINER, SHANNAN PONTON WANTED TO KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE FOR HIS DAD, A VIETNAM VETERAN AND AUSSIE DIGGER. ENLISTING IN SAS AUSTRALIA, HE SAYS, WAS THE TOUGHEST TEST, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.
Q: Why did you want to enlist in SAS Australia? There were three overriding reasons I was desperate to enlist: 1. I wanted to show my kids the power of the human spirit and strength of resilience to be a role model. 2. My father is a proud Vietnam Veteran, and an Aussie Digger. I wanted to experience a snippet of what it takes to be a soldier as a mark of respect. 3. As a trainer, I’m forever pushing my client’s way beyond their perceived personal limitations. I wanted to know if I still had IT. Q: Can you compare the experience to anything you’ve ever done before? I have done 100 km foot races, marathons, The Kokoda Track, boxed professionally, sailed the Sydney to Hobart and more, but SAS Australia

Q: What training did you do in preparation for this course? I started a course of progressive overloads, gradually increasing weight and distance with pack marches. These started with 3-5km and 12-15kg in the pack and increased to 12-15km on difficult terrain, with 35+kg in the pack. I was performing 50-100 squats, push ups, sit ups and hill sprints daily. I changed my weight training into a circuit format with minimal rest. That was the physical, but far more gruelling was

Q: They call this the toughest test. Do you agree or disagree and why? The Directing Staff (DS) are experts in detecting and exposing weaknesses, lies and false fronts. If you’re a pretender, you will be exposed for who you truly are on course. There is no respite as every minute is relentless and there is no quarter granted, neither male nor female, and absolutely nowhere to hide.
PONTON
It was a brutal realisation that I was totally alone with not much more than two sets of clothes - mostly one wet and one dry - a backpack, a mostly-damp sleeping bag, mess tin, knife/fork/spoon, climbing equipment, water bottle and mug, compass and a toothbrush.
was undoubtedly the toughest, most comprehensive test of my physical, mental and emotional state that I’ve ever undertaken.

SAS Australia blew my preconceptions out of the water. I thought there would be someone from production to offer up a blanket or even ensure we were dry and safe after an ice water swimming task. There was no one to be seen. Ever!

Q. What was the worst thing about this process for you? The COLD! I was literally cold for 12 days. Even in bed, it was hard to get my entire body warm simultaneously.
Purely by luck and chance, my mate Deanno, from Bondi Rescue, let me know he had a breathing workshop coming up. I explained my anxiety and he determined the course was the best thing for me.
Q. What was your favourite task? Abseiling from the helicopter was such an adrenaline rush.
I decided that if I stopped being such a wimp, quietened the head noise and relaxed, I could do this. The course blew my mind and I learnt how to control my breathing and the anxiety disappeared. This psychological breakthrough was far more powerful than anything I had conquered physically. Q. How did this training help you on the course? The specificity of my training had a profound effect on my comfort . Knowing in my soul that I could push further and longer gave me confidence and offered a degree respite mentally. Q. In hindsight, is there anything else you wish you had done in advance of the course? The volume of my training caused me to lose virtually all my body fat. Bizarrely, if I could do anything more efficiently, I would have kept my weight up and maintained a higher level of body fat to protect me from the cold.
Q. Did anything surprise you? There was no differentiation between male and female recruits at all. The girls carried the same weight in their packs and received no dispensation in any of the challenges or tasks. Not that any asked for it. We were blessed with an amazing group of empowered, resilient ladies that were an inspiration to me. Q. At what point did it hit home that this was real; that there really would be no allowances made and no luxuries? On entry, we were permitted to pack a small bag with some of our own meds, and toiletries. None of them made it past the DS. We were given one tooth brush and that was it. It was abundantly clear from the moment we stepped onto base that it was going to be harsh. Q. How did the weather conditions impact your experience? While on course, the NSW ski fields received 1.2m of snow. It rained every day for the first nine days, and the icy wind was cyclonic and cut to the bone. Suffering hypothermia twice, the weather made things ultrauncomfortable for me. Q. How did you cope with food rations? There was just never enough. I lost over 5kg. Rations for guys and girls were equal, which had some of the bigger lads questioning its fairness. Q. What was your take on the DS and how did you cope taking orders? The DS are men unto themselves. A rare breed. I had no problem taking orders from men who knew their craft so implicitly. What they say goes. No question! Everything is done with a ‘hard but fair’ attitude so you know where you stand.

the mental practice. I had to overcome massive anxiety linked to breathing and claustrophobia. I had my first ever panic attack after watching a previous episode from the UK.
Q. What’s your view on the Special Forces now? I’ve always held our Forces in high regard, being the son of a Vietnam Vet. However these guys are the real deal, next level. They crave the uncomfortable. They say it brings out their best! The DS have a different way of viewing life, its challenges, travesties, beauty and setbacks. These lessons are something I will take and incorporate into my life. Q. Why did you ultimately decide to VW? The cold! I just couldn’t operate in the freezing cold any longer. Prior we had taken part in a survival obstacle course, starting in neck deep water and I couldn’t get going. I was screaming at myself and using every trick I had but my body just wouldn’t comply. Heading back to the transport, post challenge I could again feel the onset signs of hypothermia. I came to the realisation that come evade and escape or interrogation, my body wouldn’t hold up and my weakness could adversely impact on someone else’s selection. Q. Any regrets? None. Q. What would you say to somebody who is considering applying for the next season? Watch previous seasons and train specifically for each task you are going to face. Get real: If you are a pretender of any magnitude, you will be exposed. You will need to drop the crap and understand who you really are, in a primal state, implicitly. •
