SATIN CALI
Satin Cali revels in the nostalgia of times gone by with their new single “Nirvana and Cheap Groceries”. They continue to blaze their own trail punching back to deliver another surefire favourite and further establishing themselves as one of East Coast’s most formidable, fresh names in indie-rock. Powered by Zac Goluch’s impactful vocals that match up excellently against primo indie instrumentation courtesy of Isaac Flaherty (guitar), Elijah Fresco (bass), Daniel Devlin (drums) and Jordon Costello (guitar), Satin Cali walks memory lane with confidence. Keeping their message and vision clear: “Nirvana and Cheap Groceries” chases the feeling we had when life was less dominated by likes and prestige; a feeling of comfort and carefree abandon that only really existed before the pressures of adult life came knocking.
It has been a busy time for Satin Cali, as the band has been pounding the pavement in recent months, getting their music in front of crowds around the country. Cutting their teeth as headliners on their own East Coast tour in support of “Lights Out”, as well as supporting the likes of The Terrys and Coterie. Satin Cali’s excel when it comes to the development of a strong show that is all their own.

THE BELAIR LIP BOMBS
If debut albums are meant to serve as the gateway, a first impression, then “The Belair Lip Bombs” introductory effort, “Lush Life” paints a vibrant and emotive portrait of a band, built on strong songwriting and love for the craft. The debut album arrives as 10 tracks of evocative exploration; stories that run a gamut of longing, seeking new horizons and discovering new paths to satisfaction and self-fulfilment.
The album captures gorgeous indie songwriting, helmed by Maisie Everett (guitar, key, vox) and fleshed out by a talented trio of musicians in Mike Bradvica (guitars), Liam De Bruin (drums) and Jimmy Droughton (bass). Featuring singles “Stay Or Go”, “Gimme Gimme” and “Say My Name”, Lush Life is a perfect album for a first-time listener to immerse themselves in and for long time fans.
“I wanted it to be perfect, and we tried a lot of different things in the studio, in terms of melodies and harmonies. It was a lot of fun. We also came up with a few additional elements for some songs. There is synth in “Lucky Nine” that was an idea we had on a whim while recording vocals, and piano in “Things That You Did” that we came up with in a similar way,” said Maisie Everett, The Belair Lip Bombs.

complements her distinctive sound and you leave the venue remembering her.
No one is immune to it all, Lily included. She was told by industry figures that the reason she was booking gigs was “due to her looks” or “being a token female artist”. This feedback has motivated her to remain true to herself, focusing her sets entirely on the music.
Do you recognise Lily from the cover? Her talent reaches beyond her amazing ability to strike a pose. Lily is also an up and coming DJ that we recommend you have a bop to.
Music has always been present in some way shape or form in Lily’s life, since childhood she’s known all the words to an abundance of songs. However,
unless you count her three year stint as a bass clarinet player, she has been a listener, lover and appreciator of tunes, melody and sound.
Lily is a relatively new DJ to the scene, but definitely one to look out for. Her first solo gig being supporting Massi and Stum at Oxford Underground!
Lily explains that defining her style is difficult, because the songs are not hers to begin with. She draws inspiration from Roza Terenzi, Tornado Wallace, Mirasia, Toni Yotzi and Suade, but refuses to limit herself to any specific genre.
When watching and listening to Lily DJ she exudes a stylish comfort and classy composure, her stage presence
One of her favourite gigs found her in the middle of a forest. She spent her set in the sun, on a stage made of bamboo, pumping jungle funk and disco tunes!
The atmosphere she strives to create entirely depends on the existing ambience of the venue; she brings music that she anticipates will provide the right tempo. However, often finds herself jumping between different patterns. The opportunity to share unheard music and an experience with people is one of Lily’s favourite aspects of being a Selector. She has done the crate digging and playlist curation, and revels in the opportunity to bring back nostalgic hits, new releases and undiscovered music.
INSTA@ SILLY_LILYYYYYYYYJamieson
Lily SILLY POSTLE
Jamieson’s journey and love for music began in primary school. The school band needed more members and because Jamieson was successful in producing a sound from the Saxophone, he was in! Although we don’t believe him, Jamieson says he had a dreadful voice when he first started
writing music and singing. He stuck to his bedroom, until 2013 when he took to the streets busking in Manly. Jamieson was awarded a full scholarship to study Audio Engineering & Sound Production at JMC Academy where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree. On his last day, in his final class he received a direct message on Instagram that he originally believed to be a scam. Once determining it was authentic he was whisked away to the Greek Islands and now performs as a resident musician there in the summer seasons.
The battle most artists and creatives face in the industry is deciding whether to rebrand themselves or pursue the social profile they have thus far created. Jamieson likens the process to baking a cake, explaining that as an artist you have to get yourself to a certain stage, develop an audience and following. It’s not until then… until you are a half baked cake, that label companies become interested in you as a musician, a brand. Jamieson uses his knowledge of the industry not only to progress himself, but
other bands and musicians with which he has involvement. He communicates that being immersed and invested in other people cracking the code or teaching them what he has learned is a rewarding part of his work.
Jamieson finds the current music industry on the Northern Beaches and beyond to be constantly changing, with no clear path for navigation. As Jamieson chats about the new era of branding and the intricacies of growing an audience, he pulls up a folder on his laptop stuffed full of self-produced, unreleased music. He flicks through playing 5 second snippets of various titles, from differing collaborations, his humbling talent becoming abundantly clear. Putting his audio degree to use Jamieson tries to be as self-sufficient as possible, creating his own production. Stay tuned for his five track EP that he will be releasing soon. The Beaches are in store for new star emerging from our small corner of the world.

Harvey Galleries presents the upcoming solo exhibitions of three major Australian artists to end another successful year at their Seaforth based gallery; Joseph Rolella, Janine Daddo, and Johnny Romeo. With each brushstroke, these artists transport us into realms of pleasure and immersive wonder. Join us as we delve into the captivating world of each artist, their dynamic artistry, and inspiring enchantment.
Joseph ROLELLA
SEPTEMBER 23RD TO OCTOBER 10TH
Pursuing his lifelong passion for art, Joseph Rolella has consistently exhibited in Australia and overseas for the past thirty years. His complex, contemporary works are intricately abstract, with an emotionally calming gratitude that is juxtaposed with the frenzied commotion of texture and surface tension.
“Light Amongst Shadows”, his next exhibition with Harvey Galleries, opening on September 23rd, sees his artistic evolution continue. His abandonment of figurative subjects has been replaced with a further, and greater, exploration of the abstract.
Born in Sydney in 1972, Rolella completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours in 1994 before acquiring his Master’s from the University of Western Sydney in 1998. With his exhibitions have come accolades; he won the Australian Cricket Art Prize in 2011, the Oakhill Grammar School Art Prize in 2013, and was a semi-finalist for the Doug Moran Portrait Prize in the same year.

Janine ROMEO
DECEMBER
8TH TO 19TH
One of the biggest names in pop art today, Johnny Romeo’s works are highly sought after throughout the world, sitting in prominent private and public collections. His collaboration clientele includes companies such as Lexus, snowboarding brand Gilson Boards, and the punk band Blink 182. His paintings, which will next be exhibited with Harvey Galleries from December 8th, serve as poignant critiques of twenty first century advertising and materialism, and the cultural trend towards superficiality and extravagant excess. They explore the intricacies of our own identities and how these factors shape who we are, and who we deify.
Romeo’s works have earned him resounding international acclaim, and the title of being a bombastic, yet profound, “neo-expressionist”, with his complex visual use of words, symbols, and images. As pop culture continues to saturate us with a never-ending myriad of images and iconography, Romeo shifts our attention to the pitfalls of unconscious consumerism, celebrity fixation and brand idolisation. By carefully balancing pop art tendencies with street art aesthetics, the creative labours of this Australian born artist are important pillars of contemporary socio-cultural commentary. •
DADDO
OCTOBER 21ST TO NOVEMBER 7TH
Janine Daddo considers herself, with gratitude, to be a lucky person; fulfilling her dreams of being a painter has brought the artist happiness that she shares with all around her. Both as a person, and in her art, she has a gift of being able to communicate what she is thinking and feeling effortlessly and effectively, with a selfless exuberance. Her playful paintings are infused with these traits, hidden within the richness of her colour palette and layered surfaces.
“Painting for me is like creating a conversation, a memory, a yearning,” says Janine Daddo.
Born in 1959, Daddo studied Design and Graphic Art at RMIT, leaving the famous Melbourne University with Honours, and was named Dux in 1981. She then began a career in advertising agencies, until in 1994 she shifted her focus to her art and motherhood. Since then, her art has drawn crowds in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as overseas in the United States, and now sits in collections around the world. Beginning on October 21st, her upcoming exhibition explores the beauty of transition and growth within life. As our own weather shifts from Spring to Summer, the subjects in her works seem to be developing too.

GOT A BUSINESS IN BROOKVALE?
THE EVOLUTION OF BAD
Something truly remarkable is unfolding in Brookvale. The Brookvale Arts District, affectionately known as BAD, is a visionary venture and passion project that is primed to emerge as one of the most exciting initiatives the Beaches has ever witnessed. We caught up with BAD’s founding members to see what all the fuss is about.
In the heart of Brookvale, BAD is a dynamic new project that’s poised to transform the Brookvale 2100 postcode for business operators, industry, and consumers.
“Brookvale Arts District Inc is a notfor-profit community organisation dedicated to fostering the social, cultural and economic growth of Brookvale,” says BAD Co-founder and owner of The National Grid, Lara Allport.
From the moment the idea was conceived, BAD has been nurtured by three ambitious, Brookvale-based business owners who all share a dream
of turning the area into a thriving lifestyle precinct that supports the night-time economy, as well as the daytime industry.
“We have strategies across urban renewal, education, business collaboration, improved regulatory environment, and community activations. The more success we have the closer Brookvale gets to becoming the funky creative/tech fusion hub it’s meant to be,” adds Lara.
THE FOUNDING TRIO
The inception of BAD found its roots with Miguel Gonzalez, an architect, designer, and visual artist who
relocated from Venezuela to the Northern Beaches in 2013.
“Brookvale reminded me of Wynwood, Miami, an industrial zone close to the beach, that was transformed into a bustling creative district. I instantly saw the similarities, and potential, in Brookvale,” says Miguel.
Drawing on his background in arts and community engagement, Miguel started hatching a visual plan for BAD with his colleagues at La Créme Creative Inc. Then, in 2019, he met Brookvale-based filmmaker, John Meredith, who while living and working in Los Angeles had
also witnessed, first-hand, the vibrant creative-tech blend in areas such as Venice and Culver City. When Miguel’s notion met John’s global perspectives and local insights, the synergy was palpable. Then along came local business owner, Lara.
“I’d worked with Lara and invited her to join the conversation. Miguel had fashioned an impressive visual brand for Brookvale to which I could bring strategy and content, while Lara has excellent contacts and creative
experience in the place-making and property space,” adds John.
This remarkable team got to work on developing a concept that grounds BAD in local narratives while aiming for global relevance.
“Our vision is for BAD to be a 24-hour arts, industry, and entertainment destination of global significance,” she says.
IDEA TO IMPLEMENTATION
As the project progressed BAD was marked by meticulous collaboration and planning. Miguel provided the artistic direction, John infused strategy into the vision, and Lara ensured BAD’s plans saw the light of day.
“Brookvale is undergoing a transformative phase. It’s not only about reclaiming its identity, it’s also about positioning it as a hub of innovation, creativity, and community integration,” says John.
BAD’s strategy is not confined to the traditional boundaries of an arts district and the team have big plans with the launch of the BAD Directory on the website, which will raise the profile of the area as well as the businesses in it.
“We understand that while art and industry are the heart of BAD, collaboration across all sectors will be its lifeblood,” explains Lara.
“The website connects local businesses, showcases the vast array of events, activities, service and products on offer in Brookvale, and is a unified platform that boosts community spirit and shared goals.”
BAD promotes collaborations between varied industries, from film production and renewable energies to aerospace and education and is leading the way, organising festivals and events, starting with the multi-media GroundSwell festival which is happening in October.
Join the movement this summer, as BAD officially gets underway, and be a part of one of the Beaches most thrilling postcodes. •

BAD: A Bright Light on the Neon Grid
In late 2022, with a mission to support dynamic nightlife and hospitality districts across Sydney, the Office of the 24-Hour Economy launched the Uptown Program. This initiative empowers independent late-night business collectives and will cement Sydney’s standing as a world-class nightlife destination.
Thirty district teams, including BAD, signed up to the first stage of the accelerator program and took part in a series of workshops to develop business and marketing skills to transform fledgling ideas into fully realised visions for their districts.
The districts were geographically diverse, spanning Blacktown to Bondi, and at greatly diverse stages of development. Participants bonded over their similarities, discovering how inter-business collaborations had revealed previously unknown opportunities.
“Brookvale Arts District helped shape our thinking for the Uptown district acceleration programnow in place to help groups of businesses keen to work together to bring the unique story of a precinct to life. Brookvale’s rich industrial history, coupled with its breweries, distilleries, creative production and live music offering, makes it a compelling place for Sydneysiders to enjoy and also for visitors to discover,” says Michael Rodrigues, Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner.
Stage two of the Uptown Program saw 21 successful districts across eight different local government areas in Sydney receive up to $200,000 in funding to further promote and realise their individual district visions. Alongside BAD, districts including Eastwood KoreaTown, Ujjala Little India and Chippendale Collective offer people a diverse going-out experience right across Greater Sydney.
As one of the grant recipients BAD will now have funding for district coordination and marketing support and an ability to launch its community activation programs.
“The funding is all about becoming self-sustainable so every dollar we spend is about taking us successfully along that path,” BAD co-Founder John Meredith explains.
“We’re now in start-up mode and strategically building the infrastructure we need to pull off a very expansive and wellhoned vision for Brookvale,” says John.
UPTOWN: A POWERFUL PROGRAM
BAD is considered one of the shining lights on the Neon Grid – an evolving network of diverse and exciting night-time precincts across Greater Sydney – and is now garnering significant interest across Sydney and beyond.
The positive response to the BAD vision was palpable when Lara Allport, BAD co-founder, recently participated in a panel discussion in front of an audience of movers, shakers and leaders from Sydney’s hospitality, tourism, cultural, finance, tech and creative sectors, with brand representatives from Sonos, Uber, Amex and Jack Daniels.
“It’s inspiring to have the big end of town celebrating BAD,” says Lara. “Based on what these significant business and cultural entities can see in our value proposition BAD is already considered a success.”
Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy John Graham says that the Uptown Program is a vital part of realising the NSW Government’s 24-Hour Economy Strategy.
“This is an exciting opportunity for groups of businesses and creatives in areas across Sydney who’ve laid out their visions to create well-known precincts with unique offerings for locals and visitors to enjoy,” he says.
The next iteration of the Uptown Program is currently underway, and a new round of participants from across Sydney are undertaking the Accelerator program, with members of the BAD team invited onboard to mentor the process. •
GroundSwell @BAD 27 - 29 OCTOBER 2023
Coming to the Beaches this October, GroundSwell Brookvale, promises to deliver a celebration of music, art, culture, and more. Rally your mates, grab a ticket and we’ll see you there!
Last year, when John Meredith discovered that The Plant Room in Brookvale would be available for a five-weekend stretch, he decided to create a music, film, and culture festival that could one day grow across the eastern industrial zone of Brookvale and beyond. It is an event he describes as, “a grassroots, all-ages version of SXSW meets Big Day Out.”
John immediately pulled together a dynamic team, including local singer and event producer Louisa Thomas, performance artist and co-producer Bec Kable, Joel Grace from Northern Beaches PA, and Emmy nominated music producer Bobby Summerfield, a man who’s worked with everyone from Michael Jackson to Jimmy Barnes.
According to John, “We had three and a half weeks to organise a festival with musical performances ranging from Opera to Punk; including neo-funk, country blues, and roller boogie.”
The festival also had presentations from local creatives, an art exhibition,
film screenings, as well as a homage to the deep ties between Brookvale and Australian surf culture.
In the middle of Covid, without any budget to speak of or lead-time for a marketing campaign, the group was still able to create a successful festival with a bright future. While the first two weekends were relatively slow, amid the regular Covid breakouts and heavy rains, by week three word of mouth had spread, and they were enjoying full houses.
“My favourite moment was the Flow Arts and Skater Punk weekend,” recalls John. “On Friday night we had incredible drumming, jam sessions, and wild ecstatic dancing. The following night we had NZ power-punch duo Whammy, a hard-core solo set from legendary Celibate Rifles front man Kent Steedman and local punks The Darrans, and with Bobby Summerfield mixing the sound it was big and beautiful, with two hundred people going absolutely nuts.”
The success of last year’s event has laid the foundation for a second, bigger, and bolder iteration coming in late October, 2023.
The three-day festival, called GroundSwell Brookvale, presents a diverse ticketed music program which will run in the LABEL entertainment venue, spill out into nearby laneways, and across a pedestrian crossing on Orchard Road.
The laneways will have free public access to music, art, food, and cultural activities with easy connections to nearby breweries and distilleries as satellite venues.
LOCAL TALENT
The BAD team have been tight-lipped about scheduled artists and presenters at this year’s festival. But a teaser campaign will unfold in the coming weeks.
“Our intention is to under-promise and over-deliver,” says event designer, Juan Pablo Gomez, who’s designed and co-produced major festivals in South America featuring the likes of Jimmy Cliff and Krafwerk.
“What we can tell you is that there’ll be a selection of popular Northern Beaches-based artists including Le Shiv and Crocodylus some opera, jazz, punk, and Inner-West warehouse party crew Motorik hitting the decks on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.”
There will also be a Ben Brown retrospective in large-scale street posters supplemented with augmented reality technology, including an animation element that has never been publicly shown in Australia until now.
The festival has multi-year funding from Northern Beaches Council and is enjoying support from major local businesses and organisations.
While this year’s festival has more local focus, we’ve been told at least one international headliner, closely connected to David Byrne, has already been secured for next year and the GroundSwell team has already approached Northern Beaches Council about expanding the festival precinct for next and subsequent years to come.

BEN BROWN @BAD
BROOKVALE IS
OF
Alife-long Beaches resident and former member of the band Hellmenn, Ben Brown took a passion for drawing that started as a young boy doodling in front of the telly, and a job in his late teens at a Brookvale screen printers, all the way to becoming a legendary illustrator, specialising in poking fun at celebrities and printing his masterpieces on t-shirts.
Ben’s unique illustration style literally peels back the layers of pretence down to bare bones, with a rock star/ pirate meets Andy Warhol flair, creating a portfolio over twenty years that includes icons Elton John, Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix, to name a few.
But what we really love is his commitment to his roots and support of causes he is passionate about – displayed in his current collaborations, creating original illustrations for the Lifeline Northern Beaches Classic event, and now with Brookvale Arts District (BAD).
Ben first threw his support behind BAD in 2022 when he donated three of his iconic illustrations – Jimi Hendrix, Debbie Harry, and Sid Vicious – to reproduce as posters which were auctioned at BAD’s inaugural GroundSwell event.
This year, Ben has created a Brookvale Arts District original illustration for the BAD merchandise range, including a Limited Edition full colour t-shirt. We asked Ben to tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this awesome visual (which you can see overleaf) because we love it!
“I got my start in Brookie working for all the various screen printers in the area when I left school. I have fond memories of riding my bike up from Manly on cold winter mornings. I always loved the surfboard manufacturers, auto industry, screen printers, skateboard companies, music studios, and rehearsal spaces that made up the area and the ‘culture’ for me.
“I have drawn on one of my art heroes to create this piece. American Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth produced fantastic custom cars, t-shirts, and model kits in the 60’s and 70’s. This design is a direct throw back. It invokes the wild times I spent as a youth in the Brookvale area – and of course, it is home to the mighty Manly Warringah Sea Eagles!”
To celebrate their partnership with this local legend, BAD are giving away two full colour Ben Brown @BAD Limited Edition tees each month for the rest of the year.
For your chance to win, simply sign up to receive BAD News updates at www.brookvaleartsdistrict. org/sign-up. The sooner you sign up, the more chances you have to win, with two winners drawn at the end of September, October, November and December 2023. See overleaf for more information.
ART BROUGHT TO LIFE
The GroundSwell festival will be introducing a ground-breaking leap into the realm of augmented reality (AR) bringing to life the iconic work of local artist and former frontman of the band Hellmenn – Ben Brown (@mentalben).
Using the Artivive app on their mobile phone, festivalgoers can witness a blurring of the real and virtual worlds in a local AR first. The BAD team has been working with Binyan Studios, based in Sydney, London, Los Angeles and New York, who have created 3D models of Ben’s work, then using motion capture and animation are blending the art from the real world of where it’s pasted up to the digital world in which its characters reside. You will literally see the art come to life. It’s the latest expression of Brookvale Arts District’s creative/tech fusion and an experience not to be missed! •

If you're a BAD business or a BAD regular then BAD News is the best way to hear all the good news coming out of BADand there'll be lots of news to share as festivals and events are announced, the BAD Directory grows (A to Z of BAD Businesses), the What's On Calendar lls up, and infrastructure improvements start taking shape.
FOUNDER Unfiltered
BAD co-founder, Lara Allport, shares her insights behind the making of BAD.
What inspired you and your community to create BAD? I’ve lived on the Northern Beaches for 22 years and been a commercial tenant in Brookvale for nearly two decades. I’ve always loved the eclectic mix of the area with its amazing spaces, innovative businesses, and the extraordinary talent that work behind those industrial facades.
Until recently, many people viewed Brookvale as little more than an industrial zone with some kid’s activities and a few breweries and distilleries dotted around. What’s often lesser known, is that amongst the 2,000 plus businesses located here, Brookvale is a hotbed of entrepreneurialism, innovation, creativity, and excellence, across just about every conceivable industry. When you look under the hood, you’ll find a pandora’s box. I love that and it’s something I want to share.
It was exciting to meet John and Miguel, to experience their similar passions for Brookvale and discover a shared vision for what’s possible here. All three of us could see Brookvale as an integrated arts, industry, and entertainment district of global relevance so we decided to get to work and bring that reality to life.
How is BAD funded? It’s been a selffunded journey with more than three years of donated time from each of us, plus other helpers along the way. From the start we’ve had solid support from James Griffin (Member for Manly) as well as industry associations like APRA AMCOS and the Live Music Office as well as Mike Rodrigues and the 24-Hour Economy Commission. Now we’re enjoying support from other local MPs, Government Ministers like John Graham (Minister for Music and NightTime Economy), and Northern Beaches Council. In late July, we received a significant seed-funding package from
the NSW Government, which we’re using to create the essential building blocks required to launch BAD, to build awareness, generate membership, and get us to the point of self-sustainability. We’re doing everything from strategic communications and branding to marketing, promotions, and website building. It’s a very thirsty beast.
Where is the Brookvale Arts District located? As you can see from our logo, we consider all Brookvale as BAD and will be actively working to represent everyone living and playing in the suburb. However, to be eligible for the UPTOWN funding we were required to nominate a ‘precinct’ within the suburb. Hence, we’ve identified BAD as the eastern industrial zone, boarded by Pittwater and Harbord Roads, Wattle, and William Streets.
It’s where most of the breweries and other venues are located that will
ultimately benefit from Special Entertainment Precinct zoning and other regulatory improvements already happening in other LGAs. The BAD precinct is an expression of night-time economy successfully co-existing with daytime industry and we look forward to demonstrating how both can thrive side by side.
Will you be running any events or festivals in the district? Yes, there’s a lot in the pipeline, and we have our inaugural music, film, and culture festival, GroundSwell, coming this October with other major festivals planned over the next two years. We’ve also been invited to participate in a couple of metro-based and regional festivals which we’ll be announcing next year. Our plan is to build an annual calendar of diverse and inclusive events so you’ll read and hear more about those as we prepare to roll them out. You can check out www.brookvaleartsdistrict.org
How can Brookvale businesses get involved? Now that we have launched the website, getting into the BAD Directory is a must for businesses in Brookvale. We are all about driving awareness and exposure for all businesses based here, and now that we are building traction we want Brookvale businesses to be BAD Businesses so that they are part of what’s happening.
BAD Businesses will also be supported through our What’s On Calendar, To Do @BAD listings, and BAD News. Not to mention other activations in the pipeline. So the best way for businesses to get involved is to sign up for BAD News, tick the box to say they are a business in Brookvale and we will send them a BAD Business Information Pack. •

STYLE YOUR LOCKS
The lovely girls at Studio 8 Manly provided hair and make-up for our stunning models on the day of our Spring cover photoshoot. The team at Studio 8 are all highly experienced and have worked in premium salons across Australia and around the world. They understand that a day at the salon is a luxury and are dedicated to providing all their clients with an enjoyable experience. We guarantee that you will leave feeling happy, relaxed, rejuvenated and stylish.
Bronte Beth Meghan
Bronte has been hairdressing for seven years, and her fervour only grows. She loves styling in particular, so you can imagine her excitement when she was asked to be a part of the photoshoot. There is an art to combining old and new techniques used within the industry and Bronte strives to achieve this by drawing inspiration from head stylists overseas, who constantly push boundaries and set new trends.
To achieve Lily’s subtly stylish and organically relaxed look
Bronte prepped Lily’s hair with Kevin Murphy’s "Hair Resort Spray", to ensure she had enough hold for this style to make it through the day. Using the GHD "Classic Curl Tong" she curled the hair in alternating directions, and to finish, used her personal favourite Kevin Murphy’s, "Bedroom Hair". Bronte finds that this product adds the perfect amount of texture and hold, helping her achieve the "effortless" look.
Mission accomplished!
Beth has been pursuing her dream of becoming a hairdresser for six years. She is an expert at styling, creating editorial looks, bridal hair, up-styles, and textured curls.
When it comes to bringing looks to life Beth also swears by the Kevin Murphy range. Their "Body Builder" mousse adds amazing volume, the "Hair Resort Spray" gives that perfect grip for hair that won't hold a curl and the "Bedroom Hair" is a classic texturizing must-have for all hair types.
To style Zela’s hair for the shoot she used the beach resort spray to prep the hair and then curled it away from her face. She then gathered the hair into a low ponytail, split it in two, and pinned it around in a messy yet elegant spiral. To add that extra touch, she pulled out some faceframing pieces, curled them, and finished the look with a spritz of Session Flex hairspray.
Meghan has been doing make-up for six years and received a diploma of Screen and Media Make-Up from ACMUSE in Broadway in 2018. Natural glam is Meghan’s favourite style, she loves using cream products and bronze tones to give the skin a healthy glow. Meghan finds that she is constantly exposed to an endless stream of inspiring Make-Up artists through social media. Utilising social media as a tool, Meghan has discovered talented artists across Australia, that she likes to draw inspiration from and learns new techniques. Meghan's essential products, which she can't imagine life without are; comprise BenNye cream blushes, all of the Benefit brow products, Hourglass pressed powders and bronzers, Mac lipsticks and lipliners, and Nars sheer glow foundations.
MEGHAN'S MAKEUP COVER LOOK
Step 1: Cream products to prep your skin. Use loose translucent powders so the cream products shine through.
Step 2: Avoid using too much colour on your eyes. Meghan used a variation of bronzers then built on it with eyeshadow, this kept the eye natural looking but still created interest.
Step 3: Set with a shining setting spray to give the skin a natural glow and maintain your look all day. •
The EXPERIENCE
The saying “Good things come to those who wait” explains how patience pays off. Jenner Dickinson and her team at Studio 8 in Manly have opened a new elegant and modern salon in Mosman. Jenner recently had a chat with Beaches COVERED. about how her patience and hard work have paid off, helping her successfully start a second salon in the heart of Mosman.
On the first floor, above the well-known "August The Old Place Mosman" at the corner of Military Road and Gouldsbury Street, the recently established salon, is a stylish and sophisticated oasis, surrounded by trees.
As you climb the stairs to the terrace, you’ll notice the skillful restoration of the building’s original architecture. The high ceiling, exposed timber beams, and impressive atrium have been brought back to their former glory, filling the area with gentle natural light filtered through frosted glass. The salon features a combination of raw native hardwoods, locally crafted lounge chairs designed by Osier Belle, and eye-catching walls showcasing products. This creates a spacious and serene environment, providing areas for both work and relaxation while you enjoy your salon experience.
“We wanted to create a spa-like salon experience that people will look forward to visiting. A sanctuary where the team gets to focus on your hair while you can catch up on work, enjoy a place to read, or chill from busy schedules,” says Jenner.
A secluded large hair washing space accommodates four impressive basin stations with mood lighting and soothing music that matches the luxurious head massage you’re in for.
Aware of the demanding juggle we all face, Jenner has introduced a consultation preference option to select
a silent appointment. This gentle chitchat sidestep is a breath of fresh air for anyone trying to multitask or tune out.
“Our focus is on relaxation, whatever that means to you,” says Jenner. “Some people want to chat while others want to plug in their laptop and get some work done without feeling rude.”
Jenner is also passionate about education, positioning all her stylists with the latest advancements in the industry.
“What sets us apart is our commitment to skill development for our stylists, sending them to up to two training sessions every month,” beams Jenner. “It is an industry that is always evolving and we want to stay at the forefront.”
Whether you’re seeking a bold restyle or the ideal sun-kissed balayage, Jenner’s team will pair you with a hairstylist expert to ensure you leave looking irresistible.
If you’re struggling to secure an appointment at the busy Manly Salon or simply want to explore the gorgeous new space, make your way to Studio 8, Mosman. Your hair will definitely appreciate it. •

CRAFTING
Meet Gabriella Dias, a 10-year-old child author from The Beaches, who found her love for writing at just eight years old in Year 2 when her teacher set a class challenge to write a book.
Gabriella's writing project quickly became her passion outside of school. Her parents began taking her writing seriously when she reached the halfway point. At just 8-years old, she completed her first book in the "Light of Luna" series in August 2021 and self-published it that November. Within 16-months of self-publishing her first book, she authored a total of eight books in the series, with the first three published when she was 9-years old. spring TIME AT THE DIGGERS
No matter what the time of day the Harbord Diggers in Freshwater has plenty of options for food. Whether it's a wholesome breakfast, coffee and cake or morning tea, a satisfying lunch, or top-notch dinner, the choices are as varied as they are exceptional.
The Diggers is home to a bunch of fantastic restaurants, including DD Collective, Teddy Larkin’s Seafood and Steakhouse, Acquafresca by Pilu, and Bau Truong. So, when your tummy starts to rumble, you’re in the right spot!
Begin your morning at the DD Collective, with your favourite barista coffee, accompanied by a flaky croissant from the renowned Mrs. Jones The Baker in Freshwater. Alternatively, from Tuesday to Sunday, indulge in a variety of breakfast classics, like egg and bacon rolls, smashed avo on sourdough, or turkish toast, plus other delicious delights.
When lunchtime beckons, a 250-gram rump steak steals the spotlight at Teddy Larkin's, earning itself a place as the ultimate crowd-pleaser. If your palate yearns for pasta or pizza perfection, wander over to the delightful Italian trattoria, AcquaFresca by Pilu. And when the hunger pangs demand immediate attention, find solace in the immense flavours of dumplings at Bau Truong, a haven for authentic Vietnamese cuisine.
If you're seeking sunshine, make your way to The Ocean Terrace, where a select menu, from each of the in-house restaurants and DD Collective, means you can enjoy the best dishes and Spring vibes at the same time.
Just like lunch, there are plenty of evening experiences to choose from at the Diggers, with menus attentively created by skilled chefs who are passionate about their craft.
For artfully-plated mains, bursting with fresh, locally-sourced produce book at table at AcquaFresca by Pilu. Start your experience with an antipasti plate of Calamari Fritti with Lemon Aioli and Porcini and Mushroom Arancini. Homemade pasta and secondi offerings will also captivate your senses.
And when it comes to the best wood-fired pizza you're in the right place. Among our favourites are the Truffle Pizza with Fior di latte cheese, mushroom truffle paste, and Italian sausage. Cheese fans will relish the 4 Formaggi, featuring a blend of Fior di latte cheese, gorgonzola, ricotta, and parmigiano – a truly delizioso experience!
No meal is complete without some 'Dolci'. Indulge in an affogato, treat the kids to gelato from the gelato cart, and if you're feeling spoilt dive into Giovanni Pilu’s famous tiramisu.
If you're craving a succulent rib-eye steak or tender rack of ribs, sourced from the fields of country New South Wales, Teddy Larkin’s Seafood and Steakhouse will satiate the heartiest carnivorous appetites. We're talking serious flavours.
Begin your culinary journey with the freshest shucked oysters – au naturel with a shallot dressing and a touch of lemon, or Kilpatrick style with Worcestershire and crispy bacon.
The Surf & Turf Board is unbeatable, featuring succulent pork ribs, Riverina Black Angus rump, Hervey Bay scallops, generously-sized grilled Queensland prawns, golden fries, and apple slaw. Vegetarians will fall in love with the king prawn linguine with miso-glazed roasted Queensland king prawns, chilli, garlic, and fried kale.
Teddy's also caters perfectly to group bookings, ensuring a destination for good food and fun, whether you're a party of two or a gathering of up to forty people
If you’re after a deeper appreciation of the rich flavours of Vietnamese, Bau Truong does not disappoint!
Let your tastebuds sing with the Five Spice Duck in an oyster sauce, the whole Barramundi steamed in a sweet dark soya sauce with ginger and shallot, or the equally tasty Vietnamese Pork Belly. Nevertheless, one should not overlook the temptation of the Vietnamese style laksa with prawns or chicken. Yum!

The Yes Boat
SKIFFIES’ GENEROUS OFFER
THERE’S NO HIDING FROM THE FACT. SAILING IS A WONDERFULLY EXHILARATING SPORT BUT THE EXCITEMENT CAN QUICKLY FADE ONCE YOU LOOK AT YOUR BANK BALANCE. IT COSTS MONEY TO PUT A BOAT ON THE WATER AND MAINTAIN IT AND THE LAST TIME WE CHECKED, THAT CASH DOESN’T GROW ON THE LOCAL NORFOLK PINES.
Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club –in conjunction with its sister club at St George - is doing its part to ease the pressure on the wallet, introducing a subsidy and prizemoney package that is the envy of sailing clubs around the country.
Prizemoney for the 16ft and 13ft divisions have been given hefty increases and there are huge incentives on offer for those wishing to purchase their own boat.
The club is offering subsidies of around 25 per cent – or a touch over $20,000 - on the value of a new boat and financial assistance for the purchase of a used boat.
The subsidies cover all classes at Manly –the 16s, 13s, Flying 11s and Manly Juniors.
The club hopes that by breaking down the financial barriers, it will strengthen its existing fleet numbers and attract and retain sailors at all levels and age groups.
It’s also sends a friendly reminder the “Skiffies” is as much a sailing club as it is a venue to enjoy quality food and drink from one of the best outlooks on the Northern Beaches.
Manly’s sailing Manager, Graham Biehl, told Beaches COVERED. the subsidy scheme is open to “weekend warriors” right through to international sailors.
“The perception is it’s an expensive, elitist sport and what we’re really trying
to do is make sailing accessible to anyone and everyone who wants to participate,” he explained.
“The club is really trying to grow this program and make boats and competition sailing available to everyone through some generous subsidies and grants.
“We’re thankful the club’s got some extra funds and wants to spend in a way to help out the community. What they are offering is very generous.”
13ft Skiff Sailor Sophie Hart is one of the young sailors set to benefit from the program.
The 17-year-old schoolgirl skippers Botany Scaffold, alongside crewmate and good friend Bella Divola.
They are regular top 10 finishers at state and national level in the 13ft class, but admit their lofty ambitions are not always matched by budget.
“It is a pretty expensive sport and obviously that makes things a bit more difficult for people to stay in it,” Sophie said.
“The extra prizemoney and subsidies are definitely an incentive to keep going. Knowing that you’ve got that extra assurance to be able to get through the season is very helpful.
“A lot of my friends have moved from other clubs to Manly because of the support and set-up we have here.”
Graham added the scheme will primarily target sailors looking to take their sailing to the next level.
He said: “It’s focused mainly on people who are ready to take that next step into skiff sailing or more competitive racing.”
World champion skiff sailor and victorious America’s Cup yachtsman Rob Brown is blown away by the support afforded the local sailing fraternity.
“It is great to see Manly 16s are continuing to lead the way in innovating club promotion and management,” he said.
“The standards set is admirably high. Well done to the board and management and members for supporting the initiatives.” •
“The perception is it’s an expensive, elitist sport and what we’re really trying to do is make sailing accessible to anyone..."

Your Hormones are your
SUPERPOWER
This is the philosophy behind Eir Women, a stunningly simple supplements brand made by women, for women. Co-Founder, and Freshwater Mum, Lisa Walker, conceived the idea while walking with her friend, Kate Guaran, during Covid. Today, their vision has been realised and the business partners are empowering women about their hormones.
In a world saturated with complexities, Eir Women emerges as a beacon of simplicity and elegance. Crafted with a deep understanding of women’s needs – emotional and physical – these gorgeous bottles are more than just a brand; they are a considered philosophy that aims to empower women.
“We are not dead at 50!” smiles Eir Women Co-Founder, Lisa Walker.
“We live much longer now. Our kids grow up and move on and it’s important we find our purpose and look after our health for the second half of our lives. It’s an important time to ask ourselves, “What’s next for me?”
Lisa, a media executive with two decades of experience in ad agencies and beauty PR, including sunscreen and skincare, conceived the idea with friend and business partner, Kate Guaran, while on their daily walks in the pandemic.
“We started the conversation on our 10km Covid walks. We wanted to create a range relatable for women,” she adds.
Eir Women encourages total holistic health and the first range has been designed with women over 40 in mind.
“Everything about this brand is joyful and empowering. Our first three products, Zipped, Show Up and Reboot,
are uncomplicated supplements for women feeling the hormonal shifts."
Along with Eir’s in-house nutritionist and naturopath, Kristen Beck (M.Hum.Nut., B.H.Sc), the team have meticulously crafted a range of high-quality products.
“One thing we’re really proud of is that there are no more than 10 ingredients in each supplement and all the ingredients have a clinical dose. This was important to us. When you're using these three products you can replace multiple supplements.”
EMPOWERING WELLNESS, REDEFINING BEAUTY
Beyond the stunning packaging, that you won’t be embarrassed to leave on your kitchen bench, lies a profound mission of education and empowerment.
“We don't need to keep apologising for our hormones,” states Lisa.
“Many women get hot flushes and gain weight slowly as they enter perimenopause – half a kilo creeps on each year and it just keeps coming.
“Every woman we know is exercising more than ever to keep that weight off. We really encourage women to look after themselves from the inside."
Lisa's advice is, don’t wait until symptoms of perimenopause hit you before you take action.
“If you start looking after your overall health and adrenal system now it will make all the difference,” she says.
Eir Women also believe every phase of a woman’s life is powerful, and different.
“Every stage has merit, beauty, and power. That power begins in our teenage years and changes in our 20s. Thirties can be a hard decade because you have this clock ticking and a career. Then there is a new sense of power that comes in your 40s, it’s very freeing.”
Colour-coded for ease (and brain fog), Zipped, Show Up, and Reboot support brain function, mood balance, energy, metabolism, bloating and stress, plus recovery and sleep.
“Zipped took us six months to nail and will help you take back your metabolism. Show Up sets you up for a glorious day and helps you show up for what’s important to you – work, the gym, your kids, yourself. Take Reboot at night to reset your system and get a great night's sleep. It contains KSM66, which is the highest grade Ashwagandha in the world, promotes calmness and supports adrenal fatigue.”
It’s no surprise Eir Women are are being approached by retailers like Mr Vitamins.
“We don't come from a place of fear and we want to empower women of all ages. Your hormones are your superpower!” •

MARTIAL ARTS: THE PERKS ARE MENTAL
Mick McSeveny, local Dad and owner of Warrior Training Academy in Brookvale, knows all too well about the importance of channelling energy in a positive way. His kickboxing and self defence program, Little Warriors, is a safe place for kids to learn skills, burn off some steam and above all, have fun!
The philosophy behind martial arts is often misconstrued. Little Warriors isn’t teaching your children to be fighters, rather the skills of self control and mental discipline. It emphasises the invaluable lesson of controlling aggression, arguably the hardest skill in emotion management.
“One of the biggest misconceptions about martial arts is that they promote violence and aggression. In reality, most martial arts emphasise discipline, self-control, and respect for others. We teach techniques for self-defence and personal growth rather than encouraging violence,” says Mick.
A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL
Mick is the sort of guy that kids idolise. He is strong, he has all the cool MMA moves and a positive, respectful outlook that kids are just drawn to. All up, the perfect role model to teach discipline and skills.
“My kids love Mick! They think of him as a real life ninja, they have learnt so much from him,”says Sally, Mum of two busy boys.
THE MENTAL HEALTH PERKS.
The benefits of the program go far beyond physical fitness. Practising martial arts is proven to help regulate emotions, improve mood, enhance

“My kid has a lot of energy. Since joining WTA she has been a lot calmer and getting into less trouble at school. Martial arts has really helped with her confidence and attention. Thanks Mick,” explains Imogen, Mum of three.
Little Warriors is a safe space where children can expel their frustrations and pent up energy without hurting themselves or others. This practice teaches kids to channel their negative energy into something positive,
like strength and skill. It also helps significantly with self confidence.
“We don’t encourage kids to use the skills we teach them outside the studio. Simply knowing they have them if they need them really helps with their self confidence throughout life,” says Mick.

mastery ROUGH WATER
There’s something undeniably magical about starting your day with a sunrise ocean swim. However, no matter how charming she appears, we must remember to respect the formidable power of the open ocean at all times. Beaches COVERED. caught up with seasoned swimming experts Narelle Simpson and Charmian Frend. They are on a valient mission to keep swimmers aware and educated in all aspects of swimming with their informative ‘Rough Water Mastery’ swimming clinic.
THE HARD FACTS
Our home is girt by sea and we have grown up with the ocean shaping our lives. At times this can leave us complacent to its perils. We are all guilty, at times, of feeling immune to its dangers.
Unfortunately, statistics paint a somber reality. Everyday, the waves claim lives. Between December 2022 and February 2023 alone, a staggering 90 lives were lost to drowning in Australia. Among these, 22 heart-wrenching incidents occurred between Christmas and New Year, leaving 22 families forever shattered.
THE EXPERTS
With a combined legacy of 65 years’ experience instructing in the open waters, Narelle and Charmian are true experts. If you can swim, chances are Narelle and Charmian had something to do with it.
Their clinic ‘Rough Water Mastery’ isn’t just about the techniques of open water swimming; it’s about empowering you with insights and skills that will have you enjoying the open ocean for years to come.
NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES
Lifeguards, coast guards, nippers, volunteers, swim instructors, coaches; we are incredibly lucky to be guarded by a formidable army of heroes. However, we need to take responsibility for our own safety. By enrolling in the ‘Rough Water Mastery’ clinic you are arming yourself with the knowledge and skills essential for navigating the open water
safely. Narelle and Charmian initiated the clinic to keep swimmers educated and aware. That deserves a rap, right?
THE CLINIC
Offering beginner, intermediate and advanced clinics, you can select the level appropriate for your individual goals. “Whether your dream is conquering the Bold and the Beautiful or swimming the English Channel, the fundamentals remain constant. You can’t say that one is more unattainable than the other because it is relative to your level of experience. Some may think Manly to Shelly Beach is their English Channel,” shares Narelle.
MORNING SESSION: Warringah Aquatic Centre
3-3.5 hours of immersive learning covering ocean reading, stroke, technique, basic nutrition and equipment. You’ll learn how to spot lurking dangers and identify safe access points. Narelle and Charmian will help you perfect your stroke through video analysis. From nutrition essentials to selecting the perfect wetsuit, no stone is left unturned.

Never swim alone. Swim with at least one other person.
3 ALERT
Always tell a lifeguard or beachgoer that you are going for a longer swim and where.
AFTERNOON SESSION: Balmoral or Shelly Beach depending on conditions.
3-3.5 hours of ocean-bound adventure. You’ll learn the art of ‘sighting', a skill that allows you to maintain a straight course in open waters. The team will teach you how to lift your head, fix your gaze on a stable point on land and navigate the waves with precision.
“Swimming in a straight line seems simple but it is a skill that you must learn unless you want to add unnecessary metres or kilometres to your swim," says Narelle. "We are also looking at a one day clinic where the morning is at a pool and the afternoon in the ocean.”

Searching for the right words is like solving a puzzle, where each piece perfectly fits to convey your thoughts.
Words: Lauren Goldsack | Photography: John Colet School
ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION ATTENTION?
With a staggering amount of emphasis put on Naplan results and rankings, it is easy to overlook the fundamental aspect that we want for our children: for them to be good people.
At John Colet School you can have both. In fact, Headmaster Julian Wilcock believes that one is the direct result of the other, attributing the school’s academic success to their dedication to the whole child.
“We place a deliberate focus on character development and values. You can’t have the academic without faith in yourself and respect for those around you,” shared Julian.
The proof is in the pudding, John Colet School consistently ranks as one of the top primary schools in Australia. Their intriguing approach is obviously working, nurturing students into exceptional young learners.
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT.
“Regular pausing throughout the day helps children learn how to fall still, quiet the emotions and give their attention to the task at hand,” explains Julian.
“I’ve seen it with my own eyes. The children at the school practice stillness, pausing 10 to 12 times a day for moments of quiet reflection. A skill that doesn’t always come easily.
“Some children gravitate towards it. However, it is the ones that struggle with it that benefit the most. It soon becomes natural to pause and be present in the moment,” says Julian.
Children, by nature, are easily distracted and society has grown quick to diagnose attention disorders. It is counterintuitive to expect focus and attention from our children without ever telling them how. Perhaps we are looking at it wrong. Perhaps attention can be learnt?
“Attention needs to be taught. Like a muscle it needs to be supported and developed,” says Julian. “The purpose of pausing is to teach children how to focus on a single task by focusing on the moment. It is a skill that I still use today.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTINUITY
Julian believes that the relationship between student and teacher is integral to learning engagement. Unlike mainstream education, at John Colet School, you keep the same teacher for two to three years.
“We have great teachers who are passionate about the school’s values and learning foundations. We want our students to know themselves and for the teacher to really know their students. Building a strong and trusting pastoral connection takes time,” says Julian.
WHY ARE WE HERE?
The breadth of subjects that the children are exposed to is impressive. From Shakespeare to Philosophy students have open discussions about gutsy questions such as, ‘Why are we here?’ and ‘How should I live my life’. The school refuses to underestimate its students by dumbing down topics.
“We encourage children to tackle the big questions in life. Naplan seems easy by comparison,” shares Julian.
“While we are well-known for our academics, our focus remains on building a child’s confidence and adaptability, which we do through a traditional curriculum and a focus on liberal arts,” says Julian.
There we have it. Hidden within Belrose is a school that fosters the growth of individuals, enabling them to not only excel academically but also thrive holistically, transforming into better-rounded individuals.
Unsurprisingly, the popularity of enrolling at John Colet School resonates with the Northern Beaches community. This co-educational multi-faith kindergarten to year-6 school recommends applying as early as possible to secure a place in kindergarten. Limited 2024 places are available in other year groups. Reach out to the school today to arrange a tour. •
“We hope to shape our children into people that think of others before they think of themselves.”

Known for its academic and sporting excellence, Brookvale’s St Augustine’s College is committed to the all-round success of its students. From academics to art, find out what parents can expect when they choose a school close to home for their sons.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
As one of NSW’s fastest improving academic schools over the last 10 years, St Augustine’s College consistently achieves results that are competitive with the very best in the state. Its HSC results deliver ATARs of 99+ and numerous mentions on the NSW Distinguished Achievers List. The all-boys school represents a diverse range and pattern of study, with multiple students achieving First in State in a subject.
CATERING TO THE INDIVIDUAL
The College provides each student with the opportunity to achieve his personal academic best and reach his full potential. Gifted and talented students are extended beyond the mainstream educational curriculum with specialised learning programs from Year 5. The College offers enrichment programs across music, mathematics and writing, termed IGNITE.
With education designed and structured specifically for boys, when your son begins at St Augustine’s College, he joins a learning environment specifically structured to set him up for success.
FACILITIES
The College’s masterplan and structured building program aims to deliver worldclass teaching and learning facilities within our idyllic Northern Beaches locale. Its most recent project, the four storey Goold Building, was awarded the Master Builders Association of NSW 2020 Excellence in Construction Award,
and was a finalist in the Australian Education Awards 2021 for Innovation in Learning Environment Design.
The facilities have been carefully designed to provide the best learning environment for students, with a key focus on tailoring learning spaces to boys. This includes collaborative working spaces, specialised music, art and drama rooms, and sophisticated science laboratories.
SPORT & CO-CURRICULAR
The College offers a diverse, inclusive and consistently successful Sport & Cocurricular program, with students from this local school achieving on both the national and international stage. It was named number one Schoolboy Rowing Program in Australia in 2022 and 2023, and Australia’s team at the World Rowing U19 Championships has exclusively featured St Augustine’s College students for the past two years running – with the team achieving Gold in 2022!

Students can pursue creative talents with many opportunities to perform and enhance skills in Music and Drama. Past graduates have progressed to renowned Australian Tertiary Creative Arts establishments such as National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and
the Conservatorium of Music, and have established careers as artists, designers and authors.
STUDENT WELLBEING
The College’s patron, Saint Augustine, provides a teaching framework that encourages personal growth, achieved amongst a community of friends. Its wellbeing program, Augustinian Wellbeing in Education (AWE), is recognised as industry leading. Head of Student Wellbeing, Ilona Welch presented at the 2023 International Boys’ School Coalition Annual Conference on how other schools can implement a successful wellbeing program from research to practice.
The College’s educational style relies on a relationship-based model, with pastoral care provided by a community of caring staff. Relationships are at the heart of an Augustinian community, and are also critical to a boy’s learning. Boys thrive in an educational environment where they first establish positive trusting relationships with teachers. The College also fosters positive relationships amongst students, leading to bonds within the local community that continue to be valued by its alumni long after graduating.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT QUEENWOOD
At Queenwood, their extensive cocurricular program is crafted to cater to the interests of every girl. The school boasts exceptional facilities and a team of highly qualified specialist staff who are devoted to bringing out the best in each student. Participation levels vary; some girls engage for the joy of group activity with friends, while others pursue goals of elite competition. This dedicated effort and perseverance have enabled Queenwood to not only excel at state and national levels but also on the global stage.
Recently, the school attained significant international triumph. Four senior students were chosen to represent the Australian Junior Women’s Coxed Four in the U19 World Rowing Championships that took place in Paris. This is a historic moment as it marks the first time a girls’ school in New South Wales has had an entire crew representing Australia. Additionally, two coaches from the school were also appointed to guide the selected crew during the event.
This is just one of many Queenwood students’ successes. We spoke with some of the girls including some who are Northern Beaches locals, who shared their experiences and how their skills and involvement helped other areas of their school life.
IMOGEN GREY, YEAR 12 – ROWING
What does it mean to you to reach this level in rowing? If someone asked me when I started rowing if I would be representing my country, I would have laughed and walked away. To say I am proud of myself and the team is an understatement. The effort and hard work that has gone into reaching this level is something I cannot describe.
If you could give one piece of advice to other young people interested in joining a crew, what would it be? ‘Never give up’. The piece of advice is simple but powerful. If you truly believe that you can reach your goals and dreams, then you have the power in your hands to work hard and reach them.
If you put in the effort every day, both mentally and physically, there’s nothing stopping you. Rowing has opened doors I didn’t know existed.
ALICE THOMPSON YEAR 12 – FOOTBALL
What is your earliest memory with sport? How did you become interested in football? My earliest memory of playing football in a team was playing for Seaforth in the Under-5s, in a mixed team with my best friend, and my dad as the coach. It was my two older brothers who really encouraged me to start playing, as I wanted to follow in their footsteps.
How have your skills and involvement in football helped you with other areas of your school life? It has taught me to work hard and to try to get along with everyone, no matter how different you are. It also taught me to move forward from disappointment and it’s okay to have bad training days or games, where
you didn’t play as well as you hoped. Acknowledging your bad days can help you appreciate the successful ones.
What do you hope to do in the future? I want to continue competing in the National Premier League (NPL) 1st-grade division, with my sights set on progressing to the A-League. However, my overarching ambition is to join the ranks of the Matildas. I want to inspire other young girls and boys to start playing football and learn to love the game as much as I do.
LILY MAYNARD-FALLON YEAR 10 – FENCING
What do you put your sporting success down to? Undoubtedly, hard work has been a cornerstone of my journey, and the dedicated hours to fencing over eight years. The consistent practice, cross-training, and the guidance of my coaches have been instrumental in honing my skills. It has been the camaraderie and encouragement from my teammates, who I have grown very close to, that has really helped me overcome challenges and continue improving as a fencer.
What’s the most valuable lesson that you’ve learnt during your involvement with Fencing? Fencing has shown me an important lesson about time and progress. Challenges that feel huge right now can become meaningful experiences and lessons later on. This idea has helped me when I feel stuck or frustrated, reminding me to keep going. Even if it seems like I’m not moving forward, the journey itself helps
me get better as long as I keep trying. It’s important to know that success isn’t just about winning. Learning from both wins and losses makes me a stronger and more adaptable competitor.
MAYA BILLINGHAMYEAR 12 – SNOWBOARDING
What is the key to your sporting success? For me, success has come through hard work, perseverance through cold days and injury, and most importantly self-belief and full confidence in what I am doing. I have been lucky enough to dedicate around 50-60 days each Australian season, and over three months during European seasons to my training, which put me on the world stage. None of this would have been possible without full support from my parents, friends, and school.
How did you become interested in snowsports? What made you choose snowboarding? My family encouraged me to participate in snowsports from a very young age. Both my Mum and Dad were good skiers, and I had my first ever trip to the Snowy Mountains at six months old, and at the age of two and a half I was on skis. I have participated in a ski trip or race training program every Winter since then.
What advice would you give to other students looking to participate or succeed in sport? Invest in yourself. Be the one to wake up early in the morning, and get Mum and Dad out of bed, because to succeed in sport you need to be the one to take ownership of your life and make the decision about what’s best for you.
At Queenwood, the school believes in nurturing not only academic excellence but also the holistic development of their students. Their cocurricular program empowers girls to discover their passions, overcome challenges and build essential life skills. Whether you dream of representing your country or simply enjoying a new activity, the supportive environment at the school will guide you every step of the way. •
A tradition of excellence and a culture of curiosity.
Our founders built a school in which each girl was encouraged to balance her academic endeavours with a broad program of participation and contribution. That tradition of excellence continues within a culture of warmth and curiosity at Queenwood. Our school is distinctive for its size and strength of community, which becomes a crucial platform from which our students can engage with confidence and openness with the wider world.

Sustainable
Brookvale's Colormaker Industries has been recognised for its dedication to sustainability by receiving the coveted Northern Beaches Sustainability Award. We caught up with owner, David Stuart, to discuss their well deserved win and their commitment to supporting the eco arts community.
PAINTING THE SCENE FORart
Congratulations on winning the Northern Beaches Sustainability Award! That is a huge achievement, celebrating your ongoing commitment to the environment. What does this award mean to you? Thank you! We are thrilled. Our intention is to illustrate through effort and achievement what can be done sustainably in manufacturing and distribution. We hope that our example will inspire other small-tomedium enterprises (SMEs) to make the change to create a healthier, more productive and meaningful future for their businesses.
You are a trailblazer for sustainability in business. What steps towards zero emissions are you most proud of? One of our most beneficial changes has to be going solar. We are proud to say that since September 2019 we’ve saved 580 tonnes of green house gases. In addition, our fleet of three electric vehicles (EVs) for local deliveries and staff commutes have covered over 27,000 km in the last year, sparing the atmosphere six tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHGs). These changes have saved around $32,000 in electricity and fuel costs and improved our footprint by 168 tonnes per year. These statistics are easy to be proud of!
You are known for prioritising critical social action that supports local schools, not-for-profit organisations in the community and disadvantaged Australian communities. Tell us more. A project that we enjoyed working with is the 'FREE THE REEF' campaign, an initiative channelling the power of art to raise awareness and funds to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
We have donated PERMACRYLIK® paints and PERMASET® inks to the flood ravaged communities of Lismore as well as the remote artistic
communities across the Northern Territory. We also back Aussie built and designed technology, such as the new ReVolve® battery. This groundbreaking product was designed to soak up surplus electricity and feed it back onto the grid, helping us towards 95% self-sufficiency.
What would your advice be to a young business striving for sustainability and zero emissions? Start now, get help, never stop. Everything that you do can make a difference. Be selective about the people and businesses that you deal with. Working with the local community now will reap dividends; not just financial, but also personal, social and reputational. As our First Nations brothers and sisters say: “If you look after country, then country will look after you”. Think hard, reflect deeply and do the right thing.
At Beaches COVERED, we love supporting local artists. You have had creative partnerships with some incredible talent. Who have you worked with and what do you enjoy about these collaborations? We are proud sponsors of the Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize and the Manly Art Gallery and Museum and have supported a number of local artists. We have a longstanding relationship with First Nations artist Blak Douglas, winner of the 2022 Archibald Prize. He used PERMACRYLIK® paint for his portrait "Moby Dickens".
We enjoy meeting technical challenges and working with artists to create bespoke colours and finishes. We recently worked with local BAD artist, Patrick Hunter to create a non-slip paint for his landmark"Octopus" mural on the pavers outside the National Maritime Museum.
It’s incredibly invigorating to work with such a creative community. We have expertise, they have expertise, we form close relationships and together we achieve results that neither of us could have dreamed of individually.
There is a lot of talk about your PERMACRYLIK® paints. Can you tell us why they are so popular? This is best summed up by Blak Douglas’ comments: “When I began painting, I consciously chose water-based paints as I felt them to be the least harmful to the environment. I recall randomly stumbling upon the incredible colour range of PERMACRYLIK® at an inner city paint shop for the first time. Gobsmacked by the pigments, what allured me most was the strength of the ochre-based range which ideally suited me as a First Nations artist.”
The range marries the colours of the art world with industrial strength paint technology and intense pigment. PERMACRYLIK has been rediscovered by the art scene after 40-50 years in production. We’re responding to that new interest and energy with an emerging range, still under development, but very exciting. The biggest part of the buzz is seeing great collaboration between Art and Industry.
Colour plays a crucial role, whether it's in selecting the ideal shade for your walls or crafting a masterpiece on canvas. Colormaker offers an extensive array of products to cater to your needs. •
IF YOU WERE PRIME MINISTER...
For this Spring season, Beaches COVERED's policitical columnist, Mark Smith, took to the streets to delve into political perspectives, asking: "What would you do if you were Prime Minister?"
This season, I decided on a different approach. Instead of sharing my political opinions, I engaged with our community, across The Beaches, to understand their perspectives on our Federal Government and its governance.
Over the past eight weeks, I've been posing a single 'simple' question to people of all ages, ranging from 18 to 94 years, spanning from Manly to Palm Beach: "What would you do if you were Prime Minister?"
The responses varied, some being good, others great, and a few rather outlandish. Surprisingly, only three individuals mentioned climate change, and another three brought up the 'Voice to Parliament' referendum.
Almost everyone took a moment to reflect before sharing their thoughts. Here's a glimpse of some of those responses:
"The housing crisis here is bad. It's essential to reconsider our immigration limits." BEVERLY, 61.
"We should have more free-to-air sporting events on TV. The FIFA Women’s World Cup is a perfect example. My daughters wanted to watch all the soccer games, but they were only showing
the Australian games. It's important to promote female participation in all sports." SHANE, 39.
"The ban on nuclear power must be rethought. Technologies today mean nuclear power is safer and a superefficient source of power. We have all the Uranium we need. Why are we not using it? Instead we sell it all off overseas. Let’s stop being a quarry and start thinking smarter on a world scale." NICOLE, 36
"Breaking up the monopolies big business have in Australia. Look at Coles and Woolworths. They have basically shut out so many family run businesses from a fair playing field." JOHN, 77
"Equal pay for all. Not just women. Companies that import workers from overseas and then don’t pay them properly should be held to account." FIONA, 42.
"We really need to make large corporations pay their fair share of tax." AHMED 24.
"Gambling advertising on TV. It makes me feel uncomfortable when I’m watching different sports with my sons. I have no issue with betting per se, but..." BARRY 52.
"I don’t understand why childcare is so subsidised. Some money is important, but ‘back in my day’ we didn’t get help. Perhaps people should consider their situation before starting a family."
ALEX 68.
"I know its more of a State issue, but we desperately need more nurses and doctors, and who are paid above grade. They got us through the COVID pandemic and we seem to have forgotten them." DANIELLA, 26.
The responses from the community, observing from an outsider's perspective, were quite intriguing.
In my view, were I to hold the position of Prime Minister, I'd explore the possibility of persuading State Premiers to transform our transportation system. Implementing higher registration fees for cars while making public transport free could enhance city mobility, contributing positively to our preparations for the 2032 Olympics.
Feel free to share your ideas with us at info@allbasescovered.com.au on what actions you would take if you were in the role of Prime Minister. •
Beaches COVERED. DEAR READERS
As a Member of Parliament representing a great community, there are some truly special projects that we get to work on together. In my first year of being elected, in 2017, I was committed to building Australia’s first hospice for young adults on the former Manly Hospital site.
In December last year, the $19.5 million project opened its doors to people across NSW. Already more than 40 young people and their families have made use of this outstanding service.
Manly and the Northern Beaches is the proud home to many unique things. We have one of the first surfing reserves in Australia, we have an iconic coastline and harbour but we also have a very proud history of being a location for amazing charities and services that not only support people in our community but families from right across Australia.
Our part of the world is home to the Royal Far West which for more than 100 years has been providing children and their families from the most remote parts of NSW with care and health support. We are home to Bear Cottage which is a hospice for young children and now, we have Australia’s first hospice for young adults.
Since its opening last December, the Manly Hospice has received more than 40 young people from across the Sydney and from as far away as Nowra, Orange, Dunedoo and Tweed Heads.
WHAT IS A HOSPICE?
The Hospice pretty much has hospital level care but, in a hotel, or resort style setting.
Located on the former Manly Hospital site, in close proximity to Bear Cottage, the service is for 15 to 24-year-old patients with life-limiting illness and offers respite care, symptom management, end-of-life care, and care coordination support in the transition from children’s to adult services.
Set amongst the bushland of North Head, it is a place that young people who have a life-limiting illness can go with their family, friends and loved ones to take a moment to rest and have round the clock support they usually wouldn’t get a home or elsewhere.
HOW DID IT GET BUILT?
The entire project cost $19.5 million. A wonderful Manly local, Kay Poche AO donated $6 million and the rest came from the NSW Government with a contribution from the former Federal
Government. The construction was done in under a year!
HOW CAN I SUPPORT IT?
If you’re looking for an organisation to support I strongly encourage you or your business to consider the Hospice. Not only does it help people from The Beaches, but indeed from across the state.
If you would like to discuss opportunities to support the Adolescent & Youth Adult Hospice through donations, volunteering, sponsorship and fundraising then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. The Hospice has a great team who can put together some great fundraising ideas.
Yours sincerely,
James Griffin MP Member for Manly Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change Shadow Minister for Digital Government Follow me on Instagram!jamesgriffinmp

RICH HISTORY
Cottage Point, nestled amid waterside bushland, has a history that's both fascinating and diverse. It wasn't always the charming and delightful place, it is today. During colonial times, it served as a popular spot for smugglers. In 1842, a timbergetter stumbled upon 200 casks of rum that had been secretly unloaded from the ship, Fair Barbadian
In the 1880s and 1890s, this area was known to European settlers as "Terry's Point" after James Terry. He owned a 100-acre piece of land here and built a holiday cottage for himself. Edward Windybank arrived in 1890, settling in nearby Waratah Bay, just around the corner from Cottage Point. He is credited with being the first to offer moored houseboats for rent. Edward operated a fleet of 60 row boats and, despite its remote location, saw the potential for a holiday destination.
He rented out his old converted steamers for just three pounds a week!
INDIGENOUS CULTURE
Cottage Point and the surrounding Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park hold a significant Indigenous history, with various Aboriginal sites including rock engravings, cave art, and middens. The park houses many Aboriginal rock craving sites, featuring depictions of emus, echidnas, fish, kangaroos, boomerangs, shields, footprints, people and ancestral spiritual figures. Among them, some portray Baiame, a revered deity and ancestral hero in Indigenous culture. Baiame, also known as 'ancestral hero' or 'sky hero,' is believed to have ascended to the sky after creating the land. Some sites are situated near Smiths Creek and Cottage Point Road, with one rock displaying more than twenty figures. •

Tranquility you can taste
Tucked away, down a secret bush-lined trail in majestic Cottage Point, a hidden gem awaits. Cottage Point Inn sits on an isolated outpost along the serene Cowan Creek. An iconic restaurant that vibrates with calm creativity pulling delicious, modern dishes from an unspoiled backdrop that will transport you to a bygone era. If you fi nd yourself here, you’re in for a treat.
Meet the dynamic duo behind the magical Cottage Point Inn –Shane and Ally Olesen. For an impressive decade, these two have been the guiding force behind an exceptional local eatery that gets ten stars for atmosphere, excellence, and culinary experience.
“The fact you are surrounded by all these seashells and you can actually smell the ocean while you eat, creates something pretty special,” says Shane.
With talented Head Chef, Steve Hetherington, the team at Cottage Inn believe every dining experience should surpass the last – a mantra that
motivates them to push the boundaries when it comes to food.
“It’s an evolutionary thing,” explains Shane. “What we try to achieve is that every time someone comes, it’s a little better and different than the last time they were here.”
It sure is hard to beat an afternoon, fine dining by the open water, with nature’s soundtrack in the background.
“It really is unique to be so close to Sydney and feel like you’re a million miles away,” shares Shane.
Cottage Point’s history runs deep. In the early days it was only accessible
by rugged fire trails and the Inn played the dual role of post office and the town’s general store. It was a haven for a number of small communities, many which have now been forgotten. Yet, beneath its wholesome appearance, Cottage Point conceals a darker past.
“This place we are in was built around the 1900s sometime.
"There was a lot of smuggling that used to happen, through the river systems, to avoid the tax boats in the harbour. Today, it stands as one of the last remaining places from that era, unique in its freehold status within the national park.”
A CULINARY CRESCENDO
The menu reflects the essence of this enchanting place – experimental, yet rooted in the traditions of the region. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding waters and lush landscapes, every dish is expertly crafted by Steve and Sous Chef, Matt Bolch.
If you want to enjoy the full culinary journey don’t miss out on the meticulously-crafted, eight-course degustation menu.
Each dish is beautifully balanced, picture perfect, and only improved when washed down with a perfectly-paired glass of wine.
The gastronomic encounter opens with a bang! Imagine Wagyu Bresaola so tender it requires zero chewing. Served with Stracciatella, native blood lime, and green ants this is the most risque dish on the menu.
“We take pride in using experimental
ingredients, such as native green ants,” shares Shane. “Not as a gimmick, but they contain citric acid which is an essential element that enhances the overall dish.”
For a more delicate dish try the deliciously light Fraser Island Spanner Crab and Sweetcorn Bottarga. And if Asian flavours are your thing, dip into the succulent Atlantic Scallops with Miso, or the Glacier 51 Toothfish with Ponzo and Shitake.
The perfectly-cooked Murray Cod, complemented with caramelised artichoke and nasturtium oil, and the hearty, sweet Bangalow Pork Belly are both unbeatable. As is the zingy Raspberry and Kiwi Cheesecake for dessert.
What sets this dining experience apart is the immersive connection to nature. As you savour each dish, inhaling scents of oyster beds and surrounded by wild flora, the entire experience is something truly transcendent.
“We work with seasonal ingredients that are in abundance to make sure they will be at their best on every dish. The menu leans towards seafood and Indigenous ingredients from the land that surrounds us,” beams Head Chef, Steve.
Every detail at Cottage Point Inn is considered, from the refreshing cocktails to the black garlic butter topped with toasted leek salt that compliments the fresh bread. The tableware itself is a testament to the care and dedication that goes into creating a memorable meal. Each crafted bowl and handshaped lava stone, which cradles the delectable petit fours, exudes a sense of nurturing and craftsmanship.
Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, wedding venue, family outing, or memorable dining experience with friends, Cottage Point Inn offers an unparalleled escape. Embrace the serenity, savour the delectable offerings, and enjoy the magic of one of the Beaches most trustworthy treasures. •
"Every time someone comes, it’s a little better and different than the last time they were here.”

Sugar, Spice Everything Iced
Discover the artistry and magic of Caker Eliza Stubbings, in an insightful Q&A. Delve into Eliza's journey, creative process, and delectable inspirations as she shares her secrets behind crafting stunning and scrumptious masterpieces that redefine the world of cakes.
Where does your love of cake making come from? I was the kid on the block that always had baking themed birthday parties. Caking specifically wasn’t a thing for me until after high school though. It was the rise in the social media of caking that made me realise I could use my love for baking in a trendy and artistically creative way.
You started your business at the age of 21. Can you tell us a bit about venturing out on your own at such a young age and how it's taken shape?
The first two years feel like a happy accident to me now. I’d love to say I started it all with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and big goals, but it’s not the case. I was using cakes as an escape from Uni. I was making cakes for friends and family and it started to quickly snowball from there. At the time, I was driven by nothing but a passion for what I was doing. Aside from working part time, my whole life was cake. Looking back, I was definitely shooting in the dark, but it was working out. I went full time with the business in 2019, just before COVID hit.
If a customer came to you requesting a custom cake, what would the process and creation of the cake design look One of the first questions on my initial enquiry form is to rank your expectations on a scale from “I know exactly what I’m after and I have photos/ drawings to show you” to “I have no idea what I’m
and creation of the cake loo like? ra your on a scale from “I know what I’m after and I have “I h wings to show you to no what I’m
after and I’d love your help”. Depending on their answer, the process can look really different.
How do you and your business stay connected to the cake community? Can you tell us how your online course came to fruition and why? My entire business was built on social media, specifically instagram. I owe just about everything to it! In the beginning, the audience I was attracting was not prospective cake clients but rather other cake businesses and hobbyists. Whenever I posted behind the scenes content there was always a lot of interest in my caking methods and recipes.
More than often the cakes you make are the most important cake of your clients life! How does it feel to be given this responsibility? I’m a HUGE sucker for weddings. The importance and the honour of creating someone’s wedding cake is never beyond me. I get goosebumps thinking how lucky I am to be trusted with that. I often have couples apologising for changing their design or their flavours for the third time or triple checking floral colours. My response to them is always the same. I would be doing the exact same thing if I were in your shoes. It needs to be perfect and it’s my job to make that happen.
What is your favourite cake that you have ever made? My favourite is my very first arch cake. I was asked to make a cake for a styled shoot at a venue with beautiful arches in the architecture. So, I made a cake in the shape of
a standing arch. At the time, it seemed so challenging and obscure. But, I was really proud to see it come to life as I had imagined. The arch cake divided the internet though. Some loved it and some absolutely hated it. Both the love and the hate made the #archcake a really popular design in the cake community.
What is your style? What are your favourite materials to work with?
My caking style can best be described as a cross between clean, minimalist, modern, soft and feminine. There are two main types of caking, buttercream and fondant. Some cakers can do both really well, but I sit firmly in the buttercream camp. Fresh florals also play a huge part in almost all of my designs. If I wasn’t a cake designer, I’d definitely be a florist, so I feel very lucky to be getting the best of both worlds.
What does cake making mean to you?
Early on, as much as I loved making cakes, I worried I wasn’t doing something meaningful enough. I have friends that are nurses, disability carers, and charity workers and I was just making cake. Cake is never something you need, it’s always superfluous. But this is also what makes it meaningful. There is a reason it’s the centre of our celebrations, it’s just pure happiness. It’s a joy to look at and eat, and for me, it’s a joy to make. •

5 WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME... TO SELL FOR MORE
Thinking about updating the façade of your home, popping in a new bathroom vanity or a maybe a new kitchen before sale? Upstate Property Concierge is a personalised service that coordinates everything for you. No job is too big or too small. Whether it’s simple paint touch ups or a full renovation, the team will work seamlessly to help you manage the entire process, take away the stress and give you peace of mind.
To help you get started with preparing your home for sale, the Concierge team have prepared the following five tips:
START WITH A DEEP CLEAN
As obvious as it sounds, this is the best place to start. Give all the windows a clean to make them sparkle. Steam cleaning carpets and polishing floors will help the home feel fresh. A house wash will remove cobwebs, eliminate grime build up and a pressure clean of hard surfaces can make a big difference.
DECLUTTER TO CREATE SPACE
A cluttered house can make a home appear cramped, and that’s the last thing we want buyers thinking. Remove anything extra to the garage or storage so buyers can see the space not the stuff.
GIVE THE GARDEN SOME LOVE
Outdoor spaces are just as important as indoor spaces. Trim shrubs and bushes, mulch garden beds, weed and mow lawns and remove any dead or excessive pot plants. Winter can take a toll on the lawns and gardens so be sure to tend to these so they can look their best when ready to sell.
Speak to your local Upstate team today, and they’ll show you the possibilities that are earning excellent results.

REPAIR AND RENOVATE
Winter is a great time to get those much-needed repairs and renovations done before you sell. Buyers love a home that feels fresh and well-maintained because its less work for them when they become the new owners. Work through all the odd jobs on your list, think about a fresh coat of paint, new carpet or simply upgrade the lighting.
GET YOUR HOME PROFESSIONALLY STYLED
We want to create a connection from the moment buyers view your property. A beautifully styled home will maximise the appeal and attract as many buyers as possible. We use styling to create an emotional connection to your property, it allows the potential buyer to imagine themselves living in the space. EUROPEAN INSPO
While it might seem like everyone else is in pursuit of the European Summer, we can also bring that ambiance to our own living space. Assouline coffee table books and art that captures the essence of the Mediterranean sea can transport us there.
CURVES
Curves are here to stay. We are seeing them not only in architecture but also furniture. Think curved bedheads, side tables, mirrors, console tables and even sofas.
MARBLE DÉCOR
MRCOR
Marble bowls and trays are great for styling coffee tables, consoles, bedside tables or bathrooms.

THE COVER IN DETAIL
WHALE BEACH
This is a unique 800m² of garden on an elevated site located at the north end of Whale Beach overlooking the ocean. The garden is located behind a traditional Palm Beach cottage perched a third of the way up the site.
Initially the space was completely covered in dense vegetation, difficult to access, and almost impossible to ascertain what lay beneath. The design however evolved with much hope and ambition given the steepness and uncertainty of the site.
The brief given was to explore opportunities to open up the area and create usable spaces for entertaining, recreation, and most importantly find a suitable spot for a rock pool. Through multiple stages of clearing, the natural beauty of the site began to emerge. A series of rock formations and boulders were uncovered which ultimately shaped the location of the pool, potential open terrace areas and a possible pathway through to connect them.
The challenge of course was how to execute the rest of the works. The property had a very steep slope with limited access. Amazing, but equally frightening, were the floating rock boulders that needed a clever engineering solution to secure them. A determined client and project team saw the construction take off and after almost 18 months the result was truly epic.
The centre piece to this landscape design is certainly the underpinned rock pool with overhanging boulders. Surrounded by expansive gardens and terraced lawns, there is a spacious open pergola and entertainment area atop a hill, drawing inspiration from Italian design. This space is linked together by a sequence of impressive railway sleeper and concrete stairways. Selected materials of concrete, recycled
timber and sandstone are robust and sympathetic to the coastal setting, while a colourful mix of hardy native and exotic plant types are blended together on mass to soften areas between rock formations and terraces.
For transformative inspiration and attention to detail that will revamp and reenergise your property, give the team at Formed Gardens a call. •

AND CRAFTING AESTHETICS PAVING PATHWAYS
Motivated by a desire to share his knowledge and experience, Nathan Miller founded Miller Stone & Co with over 20 years of wisdom and an enthusiasm to assist locals in creating beautiful spaces.
Having spent his childhood on the land, Nathan has always cherished open spaces and diverse surfaces, his love for landscaping stemming from a fervent desire to offer intricate textures and products that complement his clients’ decor.
Miller Stone & Co is deeply committed and invested in their customers, providing personalised one-on-one consultations regardless of the scale of your project.
With strong connections to various traders and designers, Nathan collaborates with his clients, offering guidance throughout the entire process.
The majority of visitors that come through Nathan’s showroom are referred from builders or close friends. As a result, the showroom features an array of appropriate products to help the decision making process.
"We showcase a range of options, including natural stone, ceramic, porcelain, decorative, and pool mosaics," says Nathan.
Upon request, they are able to provide samples, often going the extra mile to order samples that clients have spotted online.
“I enjoy bringing spaces to life... collaborating throughout the process... exceeding expectations.”
Nathan Miller, Owner, Miller Stone & Co
Miller Stone & Co typically conduct on-site measurements to ensure accuracy, and for added convenience, extend complimentary delivery services for smaller orders, thereby alleviating the burden of hefty courier fees.
Nathan explains that, in the last two decades, there has been a notable
shift from concrete pavers to natural stone within both residential and commercial spaces.
"The influx of imported stone into the country has been exuberant, making evident the challenges faced by Australian manufacturers competing against the lower costs of stone from countries like China, Turkey and Egypt.
"While there is a significant amount of porcelain tiles coming from China, it’s important to highlight that for superior quality, Italian options stand unrivalled," explains Nathan.
"The impeccable quality, strength, and diverse prints available on these tiles provide an exceptionally authentic alternative to genuine stone, all while offering the advantage of reduced maintenance and upkeep."
Miller Stone & Co can assist you in discovering the ideal pavers and tiles for your space.
Let Nathan guide you in crafting a home that's both beautiful and functional, reflecting your unique style. Drop by the Collaroy showroom or contact him to arrange an appointment, either at your home or in their showroom. •

As a renowned name in local property, Upstate is positioned to reshape its course by announcing three new directors who will continue to drive the company’s thirst for innovation and excellence.
Initially led by founding directors Peter Mosedale and Lachlan Yeates, Upstate welcomed Vincent West to oversee the commercial aspect in 2012. Now, the team has added Meschell Howarth (General Manager), Paul Ferrari (Head of Project Sales) and John Hall (Senior Business Development Manager), bringing the total count of business directors to six.
“A large team of committed, invested and experienced directors means you can always get hold of someone who cares,” says Meschell.
The new partnership promises to elevate Upstate’s prominence and introduce fresh perspectives to the table.
“Each of us knows the business very well and we know the community,” adds Meschell. “Our individual experiences will support the growth of Upstate and deliver the best business we can for our clients.”
Championing the Beaches

Paul Ferrari, boasts a wealth of experience in projects, developments, design and architecture best practices. His strategic vision will continue to contribute significantly to Upstate’s project endeavours.
And completing the trio is John Hall, whose journey with Upstate began straight out of school. Having learned the ropes on the ground, John’s career speaks volumes about his dedication and passion, driven by an undeniable connection and shared values.
“If you’re looking for someone to Manage your property - you can’t go past Johnny,” says Meschell. “He heads up our business development unit and has years of invaluable experience and knowledge of investment properties on the Beaches.”

NURTURING NATURE
Let’s embrace the delicacy of changing seasons. Winter is receding and nature is awakening with bursts of life. Marina Grassecker, the Managing Director at Harvest Native Nursery makes way for the vibrant resurgence of Spring. Read her tips and tricks for welcoming our native Spring plants and animalia into the beautiful season of rebirth and revival.
It is finally the most magical time of the year, where the insects and animalia come out of hibernation and the buds bloom! The birds are all airborne, happily gathering nest material and playfully chirping. To give them a helping hand, keep your native grass prunings and put them into a box for the birdies.
When gathering a few logs for a regenerative project, we discovered we did not have enough, because of this, one log was taken out of our nursery garden and guess what we found? A male and a female Eastern skink living inside! We will definitely not be moving any more logs from the nursery, after all it’s what they are meant for… habitat.
Daviesia Ulicifolia
Harvest Nursery offers a variety of logs and rocks, perfect for creating a snug haven for moths, lizards, small birds, and many other little critters. We’ve got grasses and groundcovers ready to turn your outdoor space into a wildlife wonderland. When you next stop by the nursery, consider creating a habitat for the native wildlife.
Soon we will see the busy caterpillars…or should I say garden munchers! These creatures have been chomping on our lovely natives, they will shortly become majestic lovelies that make us take a double look at their beauty as they fly by.
There are so many flowering natives at present that it is difficult to advise favourites. A big standout is the
Ammobium Alatum
Pultenaea species (egg & bacon plants) of which there are many and we have them in stock!
Don’t forget the prickly and dense shrubs such as Banksia ericifolia and Daviesia ulicifolia (Gorse Bitter Pea), for small bird habitats.
Adults tend to be hesitant to grow prickly shrubs near children, however, just chuck them in once and they will not go near the bush again. Seriously though, if it is explained to children what the bush is for, they will immediately respect the bush and what it does for the small birds. Remember, kids are smart!
The coastal Banksia integrifolia is blooming magnificently and feeding the Lorikeets, and last year’s seed pods are being eaten by the Black Cockatoos. That’s versatility for you!
Our bushlands come alive much of the year with flowers from trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers. To achieve colour in your garden all year round, come to our native nursery at the beginning of each season and we will help your garden bloom indefinitely. •
We have a large range of native grasses to explore.

Elevating Luxury
Beaches COVERED. sat down with the recently appointed Director of Projects at Upstate, Paul Ferrari. Upstate has always been at the forefront of innovation, and with this new leadership transition, the company is ready to reach even greater heights. Join us as we uncover the experiences, aspirations, and plans that will shape the future landscape of projects at Upstate.
What local buyer types are developers targeting and why? Gradually, I’ve observed developers providing products that suit the downsizer and the luxury market. There’s a notable shift towards a commitment to quality, and a strong emphasis on beautiful design and fittings.
Penthouses are having a moment, people seem to be opting for them over detached houses. Tell us a little but more about why they have become so popular? Well, what’s not to love about a penthouse?! You can’t deny that there isn’t something special about being on top of it all. The expansive terrace aspect and the seamless flow from indoor to outdoor spaces is something downsizers are often missing in their homes. With a
penthouse, you possess something that is stunning, and crafted by designers for the sole purpose of living and enjoying.
Currently, we proudly have three of the most opulent penthouses available on the Northern Beaches. One of them being, The Penthouse at QUARTET in Bayview, with an impressive 182 sqm of interior space complemented by a spacious 186 sqm terrace. With interior design curated by Coco Republic, this residence is a prime example of the true magnificence a penthouse can offer.
Also brought to us by Coco Republic, we offer a remarkable opportunity just 50 metres from the sands of Collaroy Beach – BATHERS COLLAROY.
Arguably the finest example of a penthouse in the area, it stands as the epitome of excellence. The interior finishes are unparalleled. The fusion of terrace and indoor-outdoor culinary areas creates a welcoming blend, emphasising a living-centric design philosophy.
BIANCO in Balgowlah is meticulously crafted and perfectly appointed. The penthouse is set in an architectural design that melds contrasting materials and tones delivering an elevated impact. The 185 sqm home shows off true penthouse style with the features downsizers have come to expect such as bespoke cabinetry, fireplace, and ocean views. The level of luxury is just so exquisite!
What extravagant finishes and furnishings can you expect to find inside a high-end penthouse?
Fine marbles and generously sized benches are at the heart of these homes. The lighting schemes and features are like automated pergolas, adding to the allure. Buyers consistently express interest in cabinetry within the living spaces, fireplaces are also a frequent sought-after feature. What truly distinguishes these penthouses is the flexibility they offer; they can be tailored to accommodate your preferences, ensuring a match with your requirements.
How involved is Upstate in the design process? At Upstate, our ingrained involvement within the Northern Region Market positions us not just as a participant, but also a contributor to developments even before the Development Application (DA) phase. This level of involvement allows us to leverage our understanding of buyer preferences, thus maximising the value we bring to each project.
Buying off the plan can be stressful. How can you guarantee that the finished product will meet expectations?
The new BCA and BASIX standards hold a level of strictness and stringentness that offers comprehensive protection to buyers in every aspect. However, it is equally important to know your builder and designer, and build a trusting rapport. Our commitment lies in providing buyers the necessary
space, time, and information to develop a genuine sense of assurance in their decision.
What exciting new projects are in the pipeline for Upstate? We have some exquisite new property in the pipeline for launches in late 2023 and during 2024. We have been working with these particular developers for years now to
bring these residences to market, and can’t wait for you to see the final result.
Just for fun. How many times a day do you get asked what the market is doing? A lot! However, these penthouses are so amazing that irrespective of the market, there are instances where you just need to take a leap when you see what you want; they’re a true rarity. •

WHAT DOES YOUR KITCHEN SAY ABOUT YOU?
Is it just us, or have all kitchens started to look the same? Creativity and quality are at risk of being overshadowed by a flatpack of generic cabinets. It’s just not right! Beaches COVERED. talked to Helle Olsen, Manager of Collaroy Kitchen Centre, about the importance of craftsmanship and individuality in the heart of your house.
Every room in a house should speak a story of the people that live there, something that simply cannot be achieved with a cookie-cutter kitchen. The goal is to create a sense of who you are, a warmth omitted from the considered decisions that you can physically feel when you stand in someone’s home.
“People have become reluctant to inject their personal touches into their kitchen. I think that is what makes a space. Be bold with your choices, there is nothing to say that your kitchen has to look like everyone else’s.
“Don’t feel like you have to mimic what you see in magazines. Not everything has to match. Some of the best kitchens have mismatched.items,” says Helle.
The team are experts is putting your bespoke stamp on your space and are on-hand to give you as much advise as you need.
“Some clients want more design guidance than others but it is still a collaboration. I really enjoy working with creative clients who make choices that I would have never considered. It adds so much character to a space,” says Helle.
BUY ONCE, BUY WELL.
Yes, we understand that budget is an important factor, now more than ever. However, the fact is that cheap kitchens simply won’t last. You’ll end up spending double when you replace it in a few years time. It is a false economy.
It only takes one sagging cupboard door or a slight curl of peeling material to turn your space into a shoddy one.
At Luxe by Collaroy Kitchen they believe in doing things once and doing them well.
“We won’t compromise on materials, from cabinet carcass to hinges, our kitchens are built to last.
“We pride ourselves on our craftsmanship. Our installer is so meticulous, from the attention to detail to time keeping. You can tell a lot about a service by how tidy they keep their site,” explains Helle.
From design that won’t date to finishes that won’t wear, Luxe by Collaroy Kitchen promises to stand the test of time.
“Our service is ongoing. We offer a 10-year warranty and will happily fix up any chips or dents that you may get along the way,” says Helle.
Our designers are experts at creating kitchens that are fresh but timeless with a sense of luxe.
WHAT’S TRENDING
“People seem to be becoming more adventurous with textures and colours which is exciting. Sage green and navy blue with brass accents,” says Helle.
Let’s not forget the importance of lighting. “I’m Danish. We love pendants! Nothing irks me more than a pendant light that is hung incorrectly. It is supposed to be a feature. Again, you don’t have to do what is expected with lighting. We recently worked on a project with a cluster of five pendants which looked beautiful,” says Helle.
Head into Luxe by Collaroy Kitchen to start the journey towards a kitchen that is truly yours. •
