With over 90 years in the business and four generations of stylists, Cordony Hair has become a Northern Beaches institution. One of the most respected and longstanding salons is about to take it to the next level by creating a one-stop beauty hub inside Illie Gifts and Homewares on Pittwater Road in Narrabeen.

Sisters Lara Batton and Claudine Husband are excited to throw open the doors to their stylishly designed beauty and social destination in a collaboration with Illie gifts and homewares

Simone from Illie Gifts and Homewares and the talented Cordony crew will be sharing the space on Pittwater Road to combine the loved coffee shop with the cutting-edge new salon. This exciting new multi-faceted space will have a tastefully curated selection of Illie homewares for sale alongside fresh fl owers and the famous Illie toasties available to order at your salon chair.

“Rest assured, Illie coffee shop isn’t going anywhere. The café will remain open inside the newly decked out salon and Simone and her team will be there to make you a coffee and a bite to eat with or without your foils in,” says Lara.

Lara was brimming with excitement about the design of the stunning new salon.

“We were hoping to achieve a feel of sophisticated coastal luxe by using timber features and the cool tones of natural stone.”

They have nailed it. Effortlessly cool and incredibly inviting, it is the perfect place to get pampered by the amazing Cordony Tribe.

“We are super excited about the new refreshment station where we can pour clients a glass of bubbles, while getting their hair done, so they can see the weekend in. We are hoping to introduce appearances by local musos and DJs.”

Upstairs, you’ll fi nd a tranquil beauty treatment room headed by the wonderful Earth Angel Beauty. Their treatments specialise in relaxation with a holistic approach to beauty and wellbeing.

Clients can enjoy traditional beauty treatments like lash lift, wax, mani, pedi or delve into a spiritual reiki and crystal healing to nurture spiritual well-being.

“We dreamed of a business that incorporated more than a salon.”

CUTTING IT SINCE 1928

The sisters are particularly proud of their special and rich history in Australian hairdressing. Pioneered by Grandfather John, who immigrated to Australia from Italy in 1920, and armed with an ambitious business mind plus three brothers Paris educated in the cutting edge hairdressing techniques and styles, he built the radical unisex Cordony enterprise.

“Claudine’s daughter, Loulou, has just fi nished her apprenticeship, making her the fourth generation of Cordony’s to work in the salon. We are so proud of her. I’ve tried to bring my own kids into the business too, but they can’t be swayed! They have their own thing going on,” says Lara.

“Work hard from the bottom up, be the fi rst one there in the morning and the last one at night. And until you have swept up every last snippet of hair on tired legs can you truly learn how the business works.”

This was Lara and Claudine’s father’s advice which proved to be invaluable, creating the ethical backbone for the Cordony name. Their respect and understanding for the trade in its entirety has resulted in an incredible working environment. Its team of happy and loyal staff, Glenda, Katie, Amy, Alana and Natasha, have collectively clocked up an impressive 70 years of service at Cordony.

After 30 years, the Warringah Mall salon has closed its doors to make way for the new chapter. However, the Warriewood salon remains as usual with all its friendly staff.

“Belinda and the team will still be there to greet our clients who prefer the convenience of a mall based salon.”

“The iconic Kings Cross Coca-Cola sign once read ‘CORDONY BROTHERS’ thanks to my Grandfather John Cordony,” explains Lara.

GREEN HAIR

The new Cordony Hair is proud to announce that it has teamed up with Sustainable Salons, an incredible social enterprise dedicated to helping salons recycle a massive 95% of all waste.

“It is unbelievable how many ways this incredible company have concocted to divert waste from landfi ll. We are so proud to be a part of it.”

Sustainable Salons help participating salons to recycle plastics, chemicals, hair and metals. The hair itself in collected and put to use either to make wigs for cancer and alopecia sufferers.

Perhaps the most impressive and innovative approach is the snippets of hair that are stuffed into stockings and used to clear up oil slicks in the ocean!

“We will be asking our beautiful clients to donate $3, less than a cup of coffee, to ensure that everything used to make them look beautiful can be used to help the environment and those in need.”

Book yourself in for some pampering or just pop in for a coffee and check out the new space. Lara, Claudine and the team would love to see you there.

Good luck on this amazing next chapter from the Beaches COVERED. team! • • All plastics are collected, cleaned and upcycled into new products.

• All salon metals (including foil) and paper are sold for recycling, and the proceeds are donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest to provide meals for hungry people.

• Hair is collected from the salon fl oor and stuffed into stockings to make Hair Booms that can one day help clean up oil spills along our coastlines.

• All collected ponytails 20cm or longer are distributed to charitable organisations to create wigs for those suffering from cancer or alopecia.

• Chemicals are collected, pooled and sent to chemical recycling plants where they’re neutralised and turned into recycled water.

• Select disposable hygiene products used during treatments are pulled apart and the materials are sent for repurposing.

“Our used foils are sold for recycling and the money is donated to OzHarvest. It is an amazing feeling when you look into a bin filled with hundreds of foils and know that they are going to feed the hungry!”
