Reward offered in post office killings By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com HENNING – A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for killing two postal employees on Monday morning. Hardin tries to unseat Naifeh By TIFFANY HOLLAND tholland@covingtonleader.com Can anyone beat State Representative Jimmy Naifeh? In the 36 years of his time in office, there have been many to try, a few to come close, but no one has managed to unseat the former Speaker of the House of Tennessee. This news might be daunting to some potential challengers, but Naifeh’s current opponent, Covington businessman Jim Hardin, remains optimistic of his chances. “I think we are going to win,” said an upbeat Hardin during his campaign kickoff months ago. “He has been there for just too long.” After knocking on hundreds of doors and making more than 1,000 phone calls, the Hardin campaign staff may be weary and tired, but are still driven to getting him elected. Hardin, a Navy man who now works for the Delfield Company in Covington, is an older friendly face in the local Republican Party and has worked on many campaigns to try to unseat incumbent Naifeh. This is not his first day in the political arena, but it is his first time to run. While many things seem in order, Hardin’s wishes for a debate were unanswered due to scheduling conflicts from Naifeh’s daily duties. “He’s gotten away with being
‘Mr. Jimmy’ in Covington, Burlison, Stanton and Brownsville when he comes home and talks a good game,” said Hardin in a press release. “But the voters are starting to see that his votes in Nashville don’t line up with their values.” Conservative groups supporting Hardin have sent out advertisements picturing Naifeh alongside Congressional House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Obama. They refer to Naifeh as having a “liberal record” and siding more with the lobbyist dollars than with the people at home, but Hardin has personally not condoned attacking Naifeh. Both Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn and State Representative Beth Harwell have spoken to voters on behalf of Hardin and said he was the right man for the job and the one who can actually beat Naifeh. While Hardin must battle Naifeh’s years of experience and familiar name recognition, the campaign recognizes one major thing that Naifeh has going against him. It is the “D” in front of his name in the voting booth. “I never thought that having a ‘D’ in front of my name would make people dislike me so much,” said County Commissioner Quincy Barlow. “People have to understand that there are some good democrats, especially here in town, and Naifeh is one of
This Saturday, Oct. 23 there will be a live musical event called “Memories of the King” featuring famed impersonator Danny Spinosa. It will be at 7 p.m. at the historic Ruffin Theater in Covington on the Court Square. Deep in the heart of Elvis country, the King of Rock N’ Roll had played in many places in the southeastern United States, one of those places happens to be at the Ruffin Theater. This historic moment in Tipton County will be recreated on Saturday night for two shows. One show will feature the greatest hits of Elvis and the other will be for
Elvis’s gospel music. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets are $10 for general admission seating. The proceeds for the event will be to benefit Tipton County Emergency Unit and Covington Animal Rescue Effort. Danny Spinosa was born and raised in Memphis. He grew up in Graceland Subdivision behind the Graceland Mansion and had many encounters with Elvis himself. He first started performing Elvis songs at the age of four in his parent’s restaurant. Spinosa has entertained people in the Mid-South and across the country for over twelve years. Spinosa’s show prices are usually higher than $10, but the price has been reduced since the money is going SEE ELVIS ON PAGE A2

them. That is how he got so many Republicans to vote for him over the years.” After Barlow mentioned this at a Naifeh fundraiser, several Naifeh supporters were quick to point out several known republicans in attendance. Many democrats in this election cycle are stepping it up due to the lack of popularity from the democratically controlled Congress and President. Even though Naifeh has no power or role in Congress and has never met Speaker Pelosi, he is still being associated with the Democratic Party that is weak right now. This has not distraught the Naifeh campaign who say they are relying on his experience and accomplishments to overcome the negative aspects of the national party. “He is the most effective legislator in Tennessee,” said attorney Houston Gordon. “He is responsible for getting millions of dollars in growth here. When they wanted to expand Unilever, we knew to call Jimmy and he will get you answers.” Personally, Naifeh said he considers the opening of The Jimmy Naifeh Center of Dyersburg State Community College as his greatest accomplishment in his 36 years in office. DSCC now has more students than the original campus in Dyer County. Naifeh was one
Ask Trey Watson and he’ll tell you little bit of water can’t keep him down. Nearly six months ago, his appliance and repair business on Quinton Drive was flooded with six feet of water and this weekend he will celebrate a fresh start for Watson’s Appliance. “It was bad, it was really bad,” Watson said of the May 1 flood. “We lost all of our inventory.” Watson started the business in 1998 after moving to Tennessee from California. It began in a small 900 square foot building, but in the 12 years since, business has grown exponentially, he said, and he has relocated twice. Watson’s sells new and used major appliances such as stoves, refrigera“It’s like a fresh tors, freezers, dishwashers, washers and dryers start and all and garbage disposals. of the old Frigidaire, Samsung, GE and Hot Point brand problems have appliances are carried instock and most other been washed brands can be ordered. away.” Watson’s also services appliances, both in-warranty and otherwise, and keeps approximately 15,000 parts in stock. Whatever you buy there can be serviced there. They also feature free delivery to Millington and Tipton County residents. After the flood, Watson’s was closed for a week, then began taking service calls again and selling appliances from a “gutted-out” warehouse. Thirty days after the flood, renovations began on his building and, he said, it has been completely remodeled. “We’ve redone the floor plan, revamped the whole business model,” he said. “It’s like a fresh start and

Horror film clichés Everyone knows Halloween is coming, if only by turning on the television. And I will be the first to admit that I love horror movies. As many times as I can enjoy an intellectual drama fresh out of Sundance and reading to get Oscar nominations, I still love a good scary flick. I love the bad acting, the routine and contrived plot points, the “rules” characters must follow to stay alive. Mostly, I just love being scared. However since I am a bit of a movie snob I must point out that the horror genre might be the most clichéd of them all, even more than chick flicks and action films. The traditions of the horror film are known far and wide. So after viewing way too many scary movies to sleep well at night, this is the list of the top horror movie clichés of all time: 1. The car won’t start. It doesn't matter if it is brand new; the car never seems to start if there is a killer after someone. But filmgoers should not be too nervous when this happens because the driver always just hits the steering wheel really hard and the car will magically ON THE RECORD start just as the attacker reaches the door. TIFFANY C ARR HOLLAND 2. Police and public officials are skeptical, ineffective and usually die, but a teenager is the one to save the day. The cops then end up getting killed off while the geeky lead will end up making out with a hot girl who would never go for him in real life. 3. Only mean people get killed. Seriously, if you are a bully, the two-timing girlfriend, or just a negative influence in general- you are dead meat. 4. Guns can never kill anybody. In the real world when someone gets blasted with a .45 caliber assault rifle, they die. But in the horror movie world, it will just knock them down for a few minutes until they can get up for one more chase seen. Even if the killer is human, a gun will never do the trick. Instead it will take a power tool, say a chain saw, attached to someone's arm, something with a flare, or possibly an explosion. 5. If there is a noise in a dark place and a killer is on the loose, someone must always check it out. Seriously, people are dying left and right, the killer is looking around, and then someone is like, “Hey let's all split up and go check out where that weird noise came from.” It's like these people want to die. The best cliché is when the noise turns out to be a cat, so then the characters think all is fine. 6. Everyone must stumble when running for his or her life. If someone were ever going to have one good run, wouldn't it be when someone is chasing them? The number of stumbling increases if they are female, and even more if they are blonde. 7. No matter how fast people run, the villain can still always walk and catch them. It does not even seem like he wants these people dead in the first place when he is practically crawling after them. And how is it physically possible for these people to run to a door, and he is already there? The only exception to this is if someone is trying to get on an elevator. The killer will never catch up, and there won’t be any motion sensors on the elevator anyway. 8. The bad guy will always return from the dead to make a sequel not as good as the original. When there is a rare, great, successful horror film, there is always one guarantee to ruin its credibility — the sequel. Michael Myers has been “finally” killed in about fourteen movies, but those “Halloween” flicks still keep getting made. There have been about three movies in the history of film to have ever arguably surpassed their originals, and those have never been horror films. I can’t wait until I have teenagers who get to see “Saw 38.” 9. Everyone runs upstairs instead of out the front door. That would be too easy, would it not? Some B-rated actress is always running upstairs to her room instead of leaving the house and walking next door. 10. A person can kill 10 monsters because they will attack one at a time while the others just dance menacingly around and watch. While this cliché is worse in Jackie Chan movies, it never fails to rear its ugly head in the horror genre. It doesn't even matter that there are a lot of people trying to kill the hero; all of them just attack one by one. Then the hero acts like he has done something by destroying them all.

Readers' Views If I Strike Out Dear editor, I do not plan on giving up, but I just might strike out. If I do, I want to be the first one. It's hard to find a nice lady to live with me especially the right one. I've definitely had support from those that care. Some do care about those that's hurting, but some do not care. In my search for editors of great publications, I've found only one thus far. You all know just how much I appreciate The Leader. That publication has definitely helped me. Clyde Rush, Munford Seeking Equal Treatment Dear Editor, My daughter has recently
become handicapped and we are experiencing new problems everyday. We visited a popular restaurant in Atoka on a Sunday this month and (I believe) were treated completely different due to our group having a wheelchair. Several groups with the same amount of people were seated several times before we were. We were left standing way over an hour. After a couple of complaints were made by employees about us being in the way I asked if the restaurant was not handicapped friendly. The answer I received was, "We are when we ain’t busy. I am curious about a business in our county that is required to have a certain amount of handicap parking spaces but could not handle having two wheelchairs in the place at the same time. (There
was one other person in a wheel chair there also.) People don’t understand how hard it is for a handicapped person to just leave and go to another place to eat. If this is a common problem, is there not something that can be done? The next Sunday our group of 20 drove to the Millington location to eat. If we want to keep business in Tipton County, then maybe the people of Tipton County could speak up loud enough for our friends and family that need just a little more "elbow room.” Thank you for your time and consideration. God Is Right On Time With all the distress we see around us; for instance, the unrest in Europe, the rise of antisemitic sentiments in many parts of the world, the financial instability in the United States, and the political uncertainty that seems to be gripping our country, it would be easy to think that events are swirling out of control. In the midst of all of these things it is comforting to know that the Lord is on schedule and His plans are being accomplished exactly as He desires. God is right on time! There is a big theological world we use to describe the future, it is eschatology. Simply stated, it means the doctrine of last things or prophecy. One of the challenges that the Bible gives to the unbelieving world is that of predictive truth. Isaiah 46: 8 “Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors. 9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure….” Lying mediums have tried to predict the future. It is amazing how many people believe in Nostradamus yet refuse to believe the Bible. There are no mistakes in the Bible. The Lord’s “mill may grind slowly, but it grinds surely,” is an oft repeated phrase. What He has promised to do He will perform. For

instance, the nation of Israel has been regathered and given back their homeland. What a wonder it is to see a people kept separate during over eighteen hundred years of exile from their homeland now restored. Though they have been judicially set aside for this dispensation, yet, they are still the Lord’s chosen people. One day soon, how soon no one can tell, the Rapture of the New Testament church shall take place. 1 Thessalonians 4: 16 “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” He will not be late. At just the right moment, His prophetic time clock shall being to move once again as He turns His attention to the nation of Israel again. The question to be answered is this: Are you ready for His return? There is no doubt about His return. At just the right moment Christ was born and brought grace to light clearer than ever before. Now is the accepted time, today is the day of salvation. Don’t miss the opportunity to trust Him. Pastor Freeman Weems

Triumph, was detoured from Cozymel, Mexico to Key West, Florida due to a hurricane. My grandsons, Hayden, Matt and Luke said they had a terrific time. They all said the food was marvelous of course. They were able to go into Key West one day for a little shopping. Thanks boys for thinking of your MiMi. I love my gifts. I think everybody had a good time but Mike was ready to get home a little earlier. Salem Presbyterian Church Worship is at 11 a.m. every Sunday. Rev. Charles Todd is minister. There will be a Joint Worship Service next Sunday night at 6 p.m. at Providence Reformed ARP Church in Bartlett. We are asking to bring finger foods. Barber will be our guest speaker, speaking on “Do you have time for the Lord to bless you?” He will speak at our 9:30 a.m. class and again at 10:30 a.m. worship which will be followed by a congregational meal and he will speak again at 1 p.m. Brother Barber is presently serving as the interim minister for the Collegeside Church of Christ in Cookeville. He is a favored speaker for many special series, workshops and retreats. You may learn more about the work and interest of Brother Barber at www.barberclippings.com. We are so grateful for our many visitors. In closing, Charlie and I had a special evening last Saturday. Brother Bill Gatlin and wife Pat had our fellowship group from church into their home. Fellowships are always so enjoyable. You get a chance to stay and converse and the fellows had a chance to play a couple of decks of cards. Of course the ladies bring some side dishes but Brother Bill and his son Tim grilled out our hamburgers and hot dogs.
They were especially good. Thanks fellows for all your hard work. Tim’s wife Angie and daughter Savannah and Pat waited on everyone all evening. Thanks ladies. It won’t be long now until it will be too cool to cook out. The fall leaves are turning
those beautiful, fall colors now. They won’t last long either. Don’t forget to get out and vote folks. Have a great week.

Greetings, I got my flu shot last Friday. I get it every year now. I believe it will keep me flu free. However each and every time I’ve gotten it, I’ve gotten a cold. Not a bad cold, just bad enough to keep me from church on Sunday. All in all, I’ll keep right on taking the spirit and I’ll continue to believe in its worth. So if you’re over 60 as I am go and get your flu shot. President Mary Burton, along with teachers Willie Mae Burton, met at Old Miller Store on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for a weekly missionary meeting, once again another great lesson as well as a nice crowd. Jamestown Community Health Organization will enjoy a night of elegance at the Baker Community Center off Navy Road in Millington on Oct. 23 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. A black tie affair – tickets are $20 per person featuring keynote speaker Joanna L. Burton, a health educator and consultant for Helping Youth Pursue Excellence. She will speak on health. Also, featured will be county representative Johnetta Yarbrough of Covington. She’ll stand in for Count Court Clerk Mary Gaither. The emcee for the evening will be Rev. Gary Andrews of Ripley, the founding pastor of Praise Temple Church. Rev. Andrews is the brother of minister Romel Andrews of Atoka. Musicians will be Johnny

Hello My Readers, No I haven't forgotten you. We have had a very busy last three weeks. We have our great niece and nephews with us and with Jon-Allen that makes four teenagers. Whew! And they are really busy, funny, and amazing. Hannah Mae came in the other night, looked around at my usually 'in-place' home and exclaimed, "the HOUSE is alive" and naturally with a big grin. Lindsey Wilson is finally through with asthetician school. She is waiting to take her boards but she is absolutely a natural at this. She will be doing facials, all sorts of them, wraps and a variety of other services. We are so proud of her. Also she is going to have facial surgery this week so pray for her success and quick recovery. She will also be working at the salon. The football team is doing well also. They will be playing Dyer this

Hello from Burlison. The home of Larry and Phyllis Collier was the setting of a recent family gathering honoring Frank and Betty Tyler (Burlison’s City Mayor and his wife) on their 60th wedding anniversary. In attendance were the couple’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The highlight of the party and a surprise to the honorees was a visit with their daughter and son-in law from Albany, New York via Skype. A belated anniversary blessing was the birth of Haley Elizabeth Alexa Dayton, born Oct. 11 to Greg and Tena Dayton. The story this week has absolutely nothing to do with Burlison, but I found it very interesting when reading about it. On Nov. 24, 1971, a man using the name of Dan

Still on our prayer list are Doris King, Bessie Cobbs, Jennie Stewart, Willie Holland, Willie Mae Burton, Jeffery Mosley Sr., Cortez Lee, Posey Reed, Joseph Heaston, Minister Pink and Cornell Sherrill, Connie and Christine Brown, Vivian Dickerson, Donetta Alston, Ruth Alston, Vernard Burton, John Burton, Ada Fletcher, Patra Ballard, Nadine Kellum, Alice Maris, Ina Yarbrough, Rufus Garner, Pauline Yarbrough, Jessie Lawson, Eddie B. next week there. We have no game Friday night so we can rest this week. The band is competing on Saturday in Memphis at the Band Masters Competition. They go on around 7 p.m. If you can please come out to the Liberty Bowl and support them it is a really great experience if you have never been to one. The other bands will be there as well. Please say a prayer for Tonya Mallory's sons, Ethan and Sam. They were in an auto wreck last Thursday on Fayne Road. The boys spent a couple of days in the hospital for head concussions. Seems a black cloud has been following Tonya around for a while so she needs lots of prayers to bring her some sunshine. Of course, there has to also be a funny story behind this near tragedy! I drove Tonya to the accident and kept telling her to settle down and breathe deep before we got there because the boys didn't need to see her hysteria. So we pull up and she is
trying to get out of the car and I constantly locking it back cause by car is still moving. So we stop and get out and while waiting for the ambulance I walk over to the roadside to get out of the way. I backed up and felt a hole so I naturally put my hand down and my foot doesn't stop. It smooth goes down into this abyss so I just let myself slide down instead of falling because I still have an injured foot from the concession stand! Remember.....? So I am completely in the hole--call me Alice and I'm on my way to Wonderland!! The huge metal culvert is right in front of me and all I can think is I'm on my way to Memphis. I hear Tonya in the background yelling, "Oh my God, Debe!! She's in the hole. She's got a hurt foot!" Then a few firemen start exclaiming words I can't decipher or repeat. Next I see these blue hands (gloves) over my head asking me how they can help me get out. By now I'm covered with
Cooper boarded a Boeing 727 aircraft in route from Portland Oregon to Seattle Washington. Cooper was described as being in his mid-forties and around 5’8” to 6’ tall. He was well dressed and sat in the back of the plane. Once the plane was in the air, Cooper handed a note to a young fight attendant. She thought he was giving her his phone number, so she slipped it, unopened, into her pocket. Cooper leaned closer and told her to read the note and that he had a bomb. The note told of his demands for $200,000 in unmarked bills and two sets of parachutes. The pilot was instructed not to land until his demands were met. He let all the passengers get off the plane upon landing and they never even knew what was going on. Cooper enjoyed a cocktail of bourbon whiskey and lemon-lime soda while waiting to be refueled and even offered to
pay for it. At 7:40 p.m. the plane returned to the sky and a flight plan was discussed. The first flight pattern was Mexico City but the pilot told Cooper, “Due to the fact that you want me to fly at such a low speed of 200 mph and an altitude of 10,000 ft. with the landing gear down and 15 degrees of flap we can’t make it.” It was decided that they CONTINUED ON PAGE A20

However, I have on this skirt and I could tell he didn't know exactly how to go about this. It was hilarious. But I'm not scathed from the incident and above all grateful that the accident wasn't any more serious than it was. Don't hurt yourself laughing about this...my daughters and friends have had a heyday with the story. I love you all and have missed not getting to write to you. I will try to do better.

Carmel boat to see several lighthous- Friday I got up, put my and the crew was busy port: We are through! tober 13th, to Carolyn Elaine Watkins • 476-7093 I'm baaaaack! And so happy for it! With limited space I'll give you the highlights of our cruise. Twentytwo women met at the Covington Church of Christ at 4:15 on the 9th and boarded our plane in Memphis at 7:10, right on time. Flew into Atlanta, then New York City and got on the very, very big ship. The ship sailed out at 4 and Delores Whaley and I settled down in our room, unpacking. Then it was time for the lifeboat talk and dinner. Sunday we docked in Boston, were Mary Joyce Coughlan, WandaTownsend and I caught a ride to Salem, Massachusetts, and went to the Salem Witch Museum. I knew I was in the night place when they were playing "The Wizard of Oz" on the TV in the gift shop! Beautiful day, sunny and in the 60's. Now, I thought the Salem Witchcraft Trials went on for years but it was just actually from July till September of 1692. We saw where they were hung and buried. The last hanging was in January of 1693. The town celebrates Halloween the whole month of October, so houses were decorated, booths set up everywhere and folks dressed up in costumes. We caught our bus back to the ship and the tide had shifted and messed up the gangplank, so we stood out in the dark and cold for over an hour, hundreds of us who had been on different excursions, while they set it up again. We boarded on a walkway held by straps hooked to a crane! Formal Dinner, good night's sleep and we were in Portland, Maine, where we toured the city on a bus then boarded a
es. Beautiful place, sunny and temps in the 60's! The three of us went to the Victoria Mansion that afternoon. It was way over the top! Formal Dinner, good night's sleep and we were in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada on Tuesday. Just about all of us walked and shopped there, and ate lunch, finding that in Canada they don't put ice in their drinks! The folks that didn't get out that day (and there were many of them overall) had a terrible gastrointestinal something that went all over the boat, picking some and passing over others. One woman (not of us) was quarantined in her cabin, key taken away. We had been serving ourselves at the buffet, but after Monday we were served by the crew. At night they were sanitizing everything in sight! I was one of the lucky ones! We boarded the Big Pink Bus, old doubledeckers from London, and rode all over the town and to the Famous Reversing Falls. Formal Dinner, a song-and-dance show that night. We had a "Fun Day at Sea", as Carnival calls it, on Wednesday, traveling to Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was beautiful, and we took it easy that day. Thursday we landed in Halifax, where we walked and shopped all morning. Went back to the ship for lunch and then back out! Everything up there is "moose" and I bought some "chapstick" kind of product called "Moose Shimmer". I brought back shirts with moose on them. It was fun. Another Formal Dinner, a hypnotist and we had a rough Thursday night. The ship started rocking around dinner time and by the time we went to bed it was pretty
clothes and shoes on and sat on the side of the bed, waiting to be called to a lifeboat or something. And I was't going to be in my gown! That room was popping, cracking, moaning, drawers were sliding in and out, doors swinging, stuff below us sliding around. I was scared! At 6:30 I couldn't stand it anymore and went up on the top deck, where there were about a dozen of us checking it out. We were in a Nor'Easter and waves were 15 feet high. I just stayed up and it was rough all day Friday, folks having to hold onto the hand rails to walk. Some folks now sick from the waves. The dock in New York, where we were headed, was closed and we were very concerned. I ate some breakfast, sitting by a window, watching it all, and we listed severely to the right. and I grabbed my tray but everything else on my table, salt, pepper, etc, hit the floor. All the plates on the buffet crashed to the floor, things in the kitchen crashed. It took us what seemed like a min-

sweeping glass. It was still rough when we had our Formal Dinner that night and a Legends Show featuring the best of the karoake folks. I went to bed expecting no sleep but it calmed down finally and we got to New York City and it was partly-cloudy, windy and very cold. We got off the ship and into a van, where our driver took us to Ground Zero, though Central Park, etc. till 2, then to the airport where we had a three-hour wait. Smooth flights and we were back in Memphis a little after 9 p.m. And glad for it! It was a wonderful trip but I think I'll stick with going South next time! All you have down there are hurricanes!

ather than voting for the lesser of two evils on election day please consider voting for Independent candidate Dr. Brandon Dodds. He is an optometrist from Newbern, Tennessee, where he and his wife are raising their three sons. He believes that both parties have turned their backs on God and the Constitution and that we are paying dearly for it as a people. Economy: He will simplify, reduce and eliminate the taxes that are killing our economy and driving industry overseas, making our state a magnet for high paying jobs. Pro-Life: He will support a referendum allowing Tennesseans to decide to protect the right to life. States’ Rights: He will use the power of the 10th Amendment (any power not given to the federal government belongs to the state government or the people) to protect our state sovereignty. Health care: He will stop ‘Obama care’ by using the 10th Amendment and fix our health care problems the right way. Immigration: Believes we have been sold out by the federal government and both parties on this issue. He will address this catastrophe at the state level. 2nd Amendment: He will not let the right to keep and bear arms be infringed upon. Schools: By law, education is a state and not a federal power. He will remove the federal government from our schools and develop a world-class education system where every child is taught to their fullest potential (rather than mandating them all to perform equally on a standardized test).
Mark the box by my name on the ballot. Vote Brandon Dodds for Governor on Election Day, November 2, 2010!

Dresses for charity helps young women go to prom
By TIFFANY HOLLAND tholland@covingtonleader.com Even in hard economic times, many people are giving back to the community. One organization, however, is not asking for money, but for prom dresses. Founder Cassandra Tate began the Prom Dress Ministries five years ago just by collecting prom dresses for underprivileged girls who could not afford the price tag of a new formal dress. What was once a small side project has become a much larger effort to tackle the needs of young
people with socioeconomic hardships. Tate ended up founding Prom Dress ministries, which has a 501(c)3 and is tax deductible. She now has more than 300 prom dresses she must keep in storage. She has also expanded from prom dresses to other charitable activities including a drive for school supplies and an angle Christmas tree charity. Tate is currently unemployed and has been troubled by the downturn in the economy like so many, but one way she has been able to see the positive side of the community is through Prom Dress Ministries which she still
TCAP test results late By TYLER LINDSEY tlindsey@covingtonleader.com Well, it’s about that time of year. But as Halloween marks the beginning of the end-of-the-year holiday season, students, teachers, parents and school board members await the return of last year’s TCAP Achievement Test results. However, those test results may be just a little late this year. Usually, the annual comprehensive report card on Tennessee schools is released by Nov. 1 of each year by the Tennessee Department of Education. The release date usually coincides with TCAP testing results. This year though the release will be delayed due to revisions made to AYP guidelines. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is a measure of year-over-year achievement and is at the heart of No Child Left Behind Accountability for Tennessee schools. The guidelines set for this standard are benchmarks that each school system, Tipton County’s included, must strive to meet. This year, the Tennessee Department of Education is working to revise these guidelines to set the bar a little higher for achievement. The TCAP test is a part of the test indicators that show how each school meets the AYP guidelines According to Dr. Tim Webb, commissioner of the Department of Education, the TCAP Acheivement test uses multiple-choice questions that provide a measure of knowledge ad application skills in various subject areas for grades K-8. Webb ensures that the results of the TCAP Acheivement Test provide valuable information regarding students’ progress in Tennessee. Overall, the Tipton County Board of Education hopes the delay in releasing TCAP results to accommodate will not be extensive. Dr. Buddy Bibb, director of instruction at the Tipton County Board of Education, says, “Hopefully, the TCAP results won’t take too long to arrive. We hope to have them by mid-November.”

does despite her own hardships. “It was just God telling me I needed to do something for people,” said Tate. “And I know things are hard for me know, but I see how people help out in this community and it gives me a lot of hope. My time is coming too.” Tate explained that the dresses are given to young women with financial hardships, with the help of local human resources, and they can keep the dresses. All of them of cleaned before they are given out. Many other local businesses have donated their services for additional things like hair and cosmetic care for each girl’s prom
night. There are more dresses than can be given out, mostly due to size differentiation, but Tate always welcomes new dresses and volunteers. “First Methodist Church in Covington has been great with us,” said Tate. “They offered their facilities for two Saturdays straight for us to keep the school supplies. The churches and people in the community have been very helpful.” For more information on how you can give to Prom Dress Ministries or volunteer, you can reach Tate at 901476-5994.
Preservation efforts for Randolph continue By TYLER LINDSEY tlindsey@covingtonleader.com Langston Hughes once wrote, “I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset. / I’ve know rivers: Ancient, dusky rivers / My soul has grown deep like the rivers.” Hughes was describing the effect that the mighty Mississippi River had not only on him physically and emotionally but spiritually as well. Likewise, many have reminisced or dreamed of times of old when steamboats regularly chugged down Old Man River carrying cotton and whatnot. Similarly, legends exist of battles fought along its banks during the Civil War. Those like Hughes and Mark Twain have immortalized the river’s mystique for people today. American citizens feel as strongly of the Mississippi River. Yet many seem to act differently. The days of old are gone seemingly along with our sentiment to leave the Mississippi River with its natural courses, wild-
life and countryside well alone. Nowadays, natural, accessible riverfronts are hard to come by no matter if you’re in downtown Memphis or in Cairo, Ill. What was once a promising economic epicenter, the town of Randolph is one of the few natural main riverfronts left along the river. With the help of other organizations, Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation hopes to preserve the historic view and the location’s landmarks. Regional land conservation director for the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation Graydon Swisher said, “Not only is it important to just preserve the land from modern development, but it’s also a multicultural site. Native Americans first settled this land because of the spring that’s still here however polluted and French explorers came through this land and traded with the Indians in the site that’s now Randolph.” Due to lack of funds to turn the area into a state park, Tennessee Parks and Greenways Founda-
tion bought the riverfront land to protect it until the time is right. “It’s important that we try and do this with as much help as we can get,” said Swisher. On Sunday, Oct. 10, as part of 350 project, which involves keeping the carbon in Earth’s climate below 350 parts per million, the foundation helped do its part in the worldwide event by outfitting a house in Randolph controlled by the foundation with solar paneling. Saved money will be given to Southwest Electric. “The event, called 10/10/10, marks a significant worldwide effort to better preserve our climate and nature overall,” said Swisher. “Some people ask me if I’m a tree hugger and I tell them that I’m just a water drinker.” A party was thrown by The Sierra Club to celebrate the events that took place last Sunday to further ensure energy efficiency. Visit www.350.org to find out how to become involved in the cause. Organizers say help cannot come at too small an amount.
New Civil War exhibit at county museum Hoofbeats n the Heartland: Civil War Calvary in Tennessee will be on display at the Tipton County Museum next week through mid-January. It is a traveling exhibition presented by the Tennessee State Museum Partnership with the Tennessee Civil War Nation Heritage Area. It is being sponsored by Simonton-Wilcox Camp No. 257, Sons of the Confederate Veterans. Tenn. held a strategic location during the Civil War and was a major battleground of the western theater. “Hoofbeats” tells the story of both the North and the South maneuvering, raiding, fighting and occupying the state with nearly every community experiencing the heavy hand of war. While few communities witnessed large battles, almost every community, including Tipton County, experienced soldiers on horseback as part of a raiding force, occupying army or as members of guerrilla of partisan bands. For more information, call the Tipton County Museum, Veterans Memorial and Nature Center at 476-0242. Museum hours are from 9-5 p.m., Tuesday –Friday and 9-3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. The museum is located at 751 Bert Johnston Avenue in Covington.
Assembling the exhibit are Myers Brown and Ron Westphal, curators at the state museum and Tipton County museum director Alice Fisher and museum clerk Nelson Bonds. Photo by Tiffany Holland.
David, Hall have wedding showers Erin David and Alex Hall were honored with multiple wedding showers hosted by family and friends. They were joined in marriage on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Covington. The first shower was a wine-and-cheese shower on Aug. 31 hosted by the bride’s aunt Charlotte Quinley. The event was attended by the canasta clubs of Ms. Quinley and of Erin’s grandmother, Mildred Quinley, as well as by past teachers and friends, who have influenced her life and have watched her grow up. The next shower was held at the home of Erin’s grandparents, Marian and Albert David, and was hosted by Mary Lon David. This holiday-and-recipe shower was attended by the couple’s grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and cousin, along with friends of the family who regularly celebrate Independence Day at the Davids’ home every year. Every holiday was creatively represented and the couple’s new home will be prepared for each celebration. A stock-the-bar party was given by Barbara and Rick David and co-hosted by Cindy Ashford, Kendy Erwin and Veronica Layne. The party was a festive outdoor fall gala complete with a live band, The Sleepy Foot. It was held on the David’s backyard patio. The event was attended by friends of the couple and their families. Maggie McCullough and Tamri Todd co-hosted an event to provide the bride, bridesmaids and girlfriends a bachelorette party. They enjoyed a fun girls’ night reminiscing the past and guessing the future. The event was held in the home of Maggie McCullough while the groom and his groomsmen spent time playing cards at his parents’ home here in Covington. The next shower was hosted by the groom’s aunts,
Charlotte Overall and Melanie Overall along with Ann and Anna Laura McGowan and Brenda and Charley Morgan Moss. The event was held at the home of Billy Mac and Ann McGowan on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m.-noon. The home was decorated in rich fall colors which the bride used in the wedding. A gift tea party on Sunday, Oct. 10 was given to honor the bride and her families in the parlor of First Baptist Church in Covington where the groom’s family attends. Erin was presented with a gorgeous corsage of delicate pink rose buds. Both of the groom’s grandmothers were able to attend along with friends and church members. The bride, groom and their families would like to thank all those involved in making such wonderful memories for all of them. They are also grateful for the love many have for all of them shown through their giving of time, talents and best wishes along with the gifts to Alex and Erin. They thank God each day for each of them.

Cardinals move closer to playoffs By JEFF IRELAND sports@covingtonleader.com On paper at least, Friday night’s District 13-AAA game between visiting Hardin County and Brighton was supposed to be competitive. It featured two teams with one loss each and would put the winner in good position to take second place in the league and clinch a playoff spot. It ended up being anything but competitive. Cardinal quarterback Danny Potter threw four touchdown passes in the first half as Brighton (8-1, 2-1) rolled to a convincing 55-7 win. The Cardinals are off this Friday before traveling to Dyer County Oct. 29 for the regular season finale. A win there will clinch a playoff berth for Brighton and allow them to host a first round playoff game. “It was a huge game,” Brighton head coach Will Wolfe said. “I was very proud of the way we came out and played.” Thanks to a 29-yard touchdown pass from Potter to John Osborne and a 3-yard touchdown run by Antonio Dickerson, Brighton led 14-0 midway through the first quarter. Hardin County (6-2, 1-2) put up a little resistance when Coty Eanes caught a 19-yard pass from Barker
Burnham to trim the lead to 14-7, but it was all Brighton after that. Potter hooked up with Ricky Foster on a 65-yard touchdown pass Osborne on an 18-yarder to push the lead 28-7 by the end of the first quarter. Dickerson scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter and caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Potter later in the period to stake Brighton to a 41-7 halftime lead. Potter surpassed the 2,000-yard passing mark for the season, finishing the game with 286 yards on 14-of-25 passing. “He’s been doing a great job all year,” Wolfe said of his quarterback, “but so have the guys surrounding him. We’re really playing as a team right now, and this is a good time of year to be doing that.” A 3-yard touchdown run by Greg Starks and a 33-yard touchdown pass from Potter to Brian Dawson rounded out the scoring. Starks finished with 54 yards rushing. Osborne caught three passes for 55 yards and Foster hauled in three for 99. Wolfe acknowledged that his team played well Friday night, but still believes things can get better. “Our guys made some plays, and you can’t argue with that,” Wolfe said. “But there are still a lot of things we need to improve on if we are going to continue our season.”

Rough second quarter hurts TRA after leading in the first By JEFF IRELAND sports@covingtonleader.com Things were looking good for Tipton-Rosemark Academy through one quarter Friday night at Fayette Academy. Thanks to a 32-yard touchdown run by Zac Hodgins and a 52-yard Kevin Sansom-to-Chance Sampson touchdown pass, the Rebels led 14-12 when the second period began. That’s when Heath Simpson took over. The Fayette Academy running back had touchdown runs of 2, 3 and 75 yards in the second quarter, to go along with a 36-yard scoring run in the first quarter, as Fayette Academy took over en route to a 46-21 DII-A-West win. Simpson scored on runs of 32 and 58 yards in the second half to finish with six touchdowns and 304 yards on 22 carries. Hodgins scored on a 5-yard run with 1:28 left in the first half to cut the lead to 34-21, but Rosemark was unable to find the end zone in the second half. The loss dropped TRA to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in league play. Fayette Academy improved to 4-4 and 2-2. Hodgins finished with 66 yards on 12 carries and caught 2 passes for 63 yards. Jordan Fox finished with 46 yards on 6 catches. Keith Hamlin had a good night at quarterback for the Rebels, completing 14 of 29 passes for 173 yards.
Cougars fall to Indians By JEFF IRELAND sports@covingtonleader.com The Jackson North Side Indians showed why they appear to be headed for a District 13-AAA title Friday night in Munford. Thanks to some long pass plays and a strong defense, North Side moved to 8-0 on the season, handing Munford a 42-7 loss, the Cougars’ seventh straight setback. North Side led just 7-0 after one quarter before Adam Craig threw three touchdown passes in the final nine minutes of the second quarter to put his team firmly in control of the game. Wildlife Chatter: Vote ‘yes’ on amendment
First of all thanks for all the phone calls and messages, they sure are picking up nicely from opening day and opening weekend. In last week’s Leader on page B7 in the bottom left hand corner of the page there was a two column by nine inch notice outlined and titled Tipton County Election Notice. The notice read in part to notify Tennessee voters that there was a Tennessee State Election on Nov. 2 and voters will, also, be asked to vote Yes or No for this Constitutional Amendment. The Constitutional Amendment is started by a Senate Joint Resolution No. 30 to amend Article XI Section 13 of the Constitution of the State of Tennessee, relative to the right to hunt, fish, and harvest game. What does all this ‘political correctness’ mean to us. It means if you wet a hook, rack a slide, sight in rifles, pistols or shotguns, feed and nurse rabbit, quail, coon, and/or bird dogs,
use and/or own a boat motor and trailer, buy a hunting or fishing license, you will need to vote “YES” to that amendment on Nov. 2, and ask everybody else that you know or come into contact to vote “YES.” If some voters say, “I do not hunt or fish so this amendment does not affect me.” This is a vote that will affect not only him or her and us, here and now, but our future generations. I called the election office and talked with Jeff Morris, Election Administrator, I asked Jeff how many votes would it take for us to win. Jeff called Nashville and here is your answer: We have to have 50 percent of the votes in the Governor’s election (take all the votes in the Governor’s
election and divide by two and then add one vote) a simple majority based on the number of votes cast in the Governor’s election. Thanks to Jeff, we, now, have a definite number. This is one very important election, ask every one you see to vote and vote yes. If all of us ask three people to vote “yes” and they ask three people, and so on, we stand a better chance of winning than staying home and hoping for the best. There are already other states that have a similar amendment to their state constitution. Alabama started the ball rolling in 1996 and other states - California, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas,
Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin have followed with their own versions. Tennessee would not be standing alone when we adopt this amendment to our Constitution of the State of Tennessee. “Ask three people to vote yes on the hunting and fishing amendment on Nov. 2.” Call me at 901 476 4601: 476 1764; 485 8767 or email me at arnold@ bullinsurance.com. Or come see us at 216 West Pleasant Avenue in Covington, across from the airplane in Patriot Park. Remember to tune into Covington Cable on Channel 5 in the county and Channel 19 inside the Covington City Limits and/or Millington Cable on Channel 11 on Mondays at 7 p.m.; Fridays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m. for the very best in outdoor entertainment. First Place Winner on the 2009 Excellence in Craft in television by Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association. May the Lord bless
you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.
This week's Wildlife Chatter has been used because of Arnold Bull's devout feelings on voting on this amendment, but there will be a new Chatter for next week's issue.

Tipton Chiefs can’t hold back Wolves By MARIO BROWN Special to The Leader The Tipton County Chiefs football junior division traveled to Cordova to face the Wolves in another SYS non-conference game on a cold night, Saturday Oct. 16. The Chiefs opened the game with the kickoff. The Wolves slowly moved down the field until a stiff defense stopped them and forced them to punt the ball. The Chiefs first play had them throwing, which lead to an interception by the Wolves. This time, the Wolves would move the ball down the field to score the first points of the game with a long pass over the defender. Wolves lead 7-0. In the second quarter the Chiefs had a hard time moving the ball along with a couple of penalties and was force to punt the ball away. Once again the Wolves would march down the field to score and lead the game 14-0 at the half. The Chiefs deferred to the second half, the Wolves had a short kick. Aaron Alston took it for 14 yards before he was brought down. The Chiefs took command of the field. TJ Kluttz connected with
Millican hits MTV2 Drag racing is going main stream. The definitive acceleration sport provides the impetus for an upcoming MTV2 television program that features students from the Universal Technical Institute at Phoenix constructing two drag race cars for competition. “Basically, we have two classes from UTI and they have nine weeks to build two drag racing cars,” said Ray Iddings of High Five Entertainment. “We’ll take the cars to Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix for a best-of-five showdown . . . and the losing car is going to get crushed. "The program, Burnout 'The Ultimate Drag Race Challenge', begins in April on MTV2." Veteran NHRA Top Fuel driver and television personality Clay Millican will be the show’s host while Antron Brown and Jason Line will serve as judges. Brown drives in NHRA’s Top Fuel category and Line is a Pro Stock driver. Millican said his duties include coaching the students and helping them speed up the process “because they have just a short amount of time to get these cars built right. We will be challenging them so we can figure out who’s going to rise to the head of the class. “I am excited to be a part of the show and I think this is going to be a huge show for drag racing. We are certainly visiting an audience on MTV2 that may not have had much exposure to it.”
Corey Simmons for 32 yards pass to put the Chiefs in high spirits. Alston took over running the ball for 11 yard gain and then a few plays later took one for 23 yards for a touchdown. Chiefs now trailing 14-6. The Wolves would answer back again with another deep pass still in the third quarter for their third touchdown of the game to lead the Chiefs 21-6. The Chiefs didn’t show signs of giving up in the fourth quarter. With Alston taking the ball a couple times up the middle for a gain of 23 and 24 yards apiece. But with time running against the Chiefs, the game ended with the Wolves on top, 21-6. The Chiefs fall to 4-3 overall record. Chiefs rushing - Alston 18-109, TD; Kluttz 4-19. Passing - Kluttz 1-8-1-32. Receiving - Simmons 1-32. Defense - Alston 4.5 tackles, Kluttz and Fisson 4 tackles, M. Webb 3.5 tackles and a sack, and Hankins 2.5 tackles. Next week the Chiefs have a bye week until Oct, 30 when they will host the conference rival Haywood County Tomcats for the final regular season game. Both teams have made it to the first round of the playoff. This will help decide the playoff seating. For more information, go to www.shelbyyouthsports.com.
